Abstract:
The Turkish Straits comprising the Strait of Canakkale, the Strait of Istanbul and the Sea of Marmara are unique in many respects. All dangers and obstacles characteristic of narrow waterways are present and acute in this critical sea lane. This research reveals the simulation of Canakkale (Dardanelle) Strait under different traffic conditions and identifies risky areas. The results of this simulation show that an increase of 25% in the existing traffic grows 43 times in the number of waiting ships (from 1.663 to 73.73), whereas waiting time increases 29 times (from 24.267 to 737.07). As a result of simulations and risk analysis, it is found that Nara turning point is the bottleneck point of the strait due to its topographic structure and the current system.

Abstract:
Malaysian media received their world news from the international news agencies; therefore readers are flooded with news reports structured by the Westerns point ofvielv. This paper wishes to investigate the portrayal of Islam in news selected and republished in the World section of The Star and the New Straits Times. A content analysis revealed that most ofthe stories on Islam are revolved around war, crime and politics. News on Islam has reported that this religion been relatively associated with violence; suggesting that the news agencies are bias as reporting on Islam, especially in the news republished by The Star. The main frames projected in The Star are "Islam is inherently violent" and "Islam does not go well with the concept of peace ". Although news reports in NST suggested that terrorism and wars are common in the Islamic countries, yet the tones suggested that Islam is not the source of the act of extremism. The mainframes in NST are "terrorism and warsare common in the Islamic countries, yet Islam is not to be blamed" and "the Muslim countries are slowly moving from extremism to peace and moderation. The finding indicates that there English newspapers are forced to republished negative news on Islam which will resulted in a misconception of Islam among the readers.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: This study aimed to find out the meaning behind the text of two streams of online newspapers in Malaysia, the present study is conducted on ‘Malaysiakini’ (independent newspaper) and ‘The News Straits Times’ (mainstream newspaper). Methodology: The research employs Norman Fairclough (1995) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which is analyzed with Halliday’s Systematic Functional Linguistics (SFL) based on social semiotics analysis (1985). Transitivity Analysis of text is based on Halliday’s work by Matthiessen (2014). Sixteen-16 (6,125 words) hard news is selected from ‘Malaysiakini’ and five-5 (2,270 words) from ‘The New Straits Times’ based on the ‘defamation’ category, which is selected from one week before elections. The selected dates of data are 3rd May till 9th May 2018. The news reports are selected on social actors’ performances i.e. Dr.Mahathir Mohamad and Najib Razak, which are based on van Leeuwen’s (2005) social semiotic framework. Main Findings: The results show Malaysiakini has portrayed independent views and given fair portrayal to both political social actors as compared to ‘The News Straits Times’. Applications of this study: The study can be useful in print journalism in which grammatical words’ analysis through the process of transitivity leads to determine the inclination of the newspaper towards a political party. Novelty/Originality of this study: The study may benefit readers in existing knowledge as elections’ social actors have not been analyzed earlier grammatically.

Abstract:
A chain of simple linked models is used to simulate the seasonal and interannual variability of the Turkish Straits System. This chain includes two-layer hydraulic models of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits simulating the exchange in terms of level and density difference along each strait, and a one-dimensional area averaged layered model of the Marmara Sea. The chain of models is complemented also by the similar layered model of the Black Sea proper and by a one-layer Azov Sea model with the Kerch Strait. This linked chain of models is used to study the seasonal and interannual variability of the system in the period 1970-2009. The salinity of the Black Sea water flowing into the Aegean Sea increases by approximately 1.7 times through entrainment from the lower layer. The flow entering into the lower layer of the Dardanelles Strait from the Aegean Sea is reduced by nearly 80% when it reaches the Black Sea. In the seasonal scale, a maximal transport in the upper layer and minimal transport in the bottom layer are during winter/spring for the Bosphorus and in spring for the Dardanelles Strait, whereas minimal transport in upper layer and maximal undercurrent are during the summer for the Bosphorus Strait and autumn for the Dardanelles Strait. The increase of freshwater flux into the Black Sea in interannual time scales (41 m3s-1 per year) is accompanied by a more than twofold growth of the Dardanelles outflow to the North Aegean (102 m3s-1 per year).

This is a photographic essay centered on the Carquinez Straits, particularly Mare Island. Once the Carquinez Strait was a center of the California economy. In the nineteenth century it was the center of the wheat trade. In the twentieth century, it was the center of the military industrial economy. Now Vallejo is Broke Town, USA, as the New York Times put it, and Mare Island has become a place were much of the old California is turned to scrap and shipped elsewhere. It is an industrial Pompeii, but it is also an instructive and hardly hopeless place. It is in many ways diagnostic of modern California, but the diagnosis is hardly hopeless.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to study the possible existence of day-of-the-week effects and month-of-the-year effects in the Singapore stock market over the period January 1st 1993 to December 31st 2011. The findings are analysed with the intention of developing investment strategies and to investigate if behavioural finance can help to explain the existence of seasonal anomalies.  Background: A number of previous studies have found evidence of seasonal anomalies in global stock markets, and by challenging the core assumptions of market efficiency, such anomalies may make it possible to predict the movement of stock prices at certain periods during the year. Consequently, there may be substantial profit-making opportunities that clever investors can benefit from, raising two important questions: (1) can such anomalies be strategically used to outperform the market and (2) why do such cyclical return patterns exist? Method: Daily closing prices from the Singapore Straits Times Index (STI) are used to compute average daily and monthly returns, which are further analysed through the use of statistical significance analysis and hypothesis testing to identify the possible existence of day-of-the-week effects and month-of-the-year effects in the Singapore stock market.  The results of the statistical investigation are used to develop investment strategies that are designed to take advantage of both positive and negative effects, and the theories of behavioural finance are applied to help explain why seasonalities occur at certain points in time. Conclusions: This study finds evidence of several seasonal anomalies in the Singapore stock market. Both day-of-the-week effects and month-of-the-year effects are present in the STI over the full sample period. Many of these effects can be explained by behavioural finance, and used to develop investment strategies that outperform the market.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyse how the Straits Times reported Singapore's communication news between May 1992 and October 1995, with a focus on Singapore's communication regionalisation. This study is a modest attempt to depart from some of the approaches taken by recent communication related studies of the Singapore experience. They tend to focus on the domestic side of state-press relationship and the issue of Singaporean press freedom, without sustained consideration of external forces, such as globalisation. This analysis provides a synthesis of secondary sources and a qualitative content analysis of communication news in the Straits Times. The results suggest there has been a convergence between the stories in the Straits Times and official views about two themes - business regionalisation and 'Asian' media standards. Results suggest the government has an extensive influence over Singapore's communication, especially with regard to media content. Also, the analysis shows Singapore's identification with Asia, despite bilateral and regional tensions in business and culture, and suggests an uneasy relationship between Singapore and the West, in particular, with the US. That is, while Singapore's business relations with the US are good, its cultural relations are not, especially when Singapore's practice of media standards does not accept the American interpretation, but one based on its national interests. This study provides a glimpse of global communication forces which are influencing Singapore's communication development, as interpreted in the stories from the Straits Times. Although there remains uncertainties about Singapore's communication future, this study may provide an insight as to whether Singapore has taken the right direction in becoming a leading country in advocating an 'Asian voice'.

Abstract:
The first Speak Good English Movement, SGEM, took place in 2000, and has been organized annually ever since. Speaking a “standard” form of English is considered to bring increased personal power. However, the SGEM wants the Singaporeans to use “standard” English in their private life as well. A decade after the beginning of the campaign, a Speak Good Singlish Movement was started. Based on studies of language and identity, it is understandable why some Singaporeans might feel the SGEM threatens their identity. However, the reactions towards the campaign are mainly positive. For the purposes of this analysis, Twitter messages, Facebook pages, and newspaper articles from The Straits Times were collected. The SGEM has hailed both direct and indirect praise and criticism in both social and traditional media: Five newspaper articles praise the campaign while five criticize it; the results are nine and seven respectively for social media. This thesis looks at reactions towards the SGEM in both social and traditional media, analyzes how these reactions might relate to the ideas of the power of language, its variety and the relation of language and identity.

Garcia, Azuero Alejandro. "Dynamic reservoir characterization from overburden time-lapse strains." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2525.

Full text
Abstract:
Accurate reservoir depletion or pressure change patterns are of great value when planning infill drilling programs for field development, as well as when monitoring injection wells and swept/unswept areas. In addition, a precise dynamic geomechanical description of the reservoir and overburden stress state could prevent costly undesired effects on the production infrastructure such as sea floor subsidence, casing shear and well failure. Dynamic characterization of reservoirs, until recently, had only well data to rely on, which apart from the inherent uncertainties (e.g. due to formation damage), provides no direct information on what is taking place between the wells. The advent of time-lapse seismic at the end of the 1990s meant that this gap could be bridged, providing measurements of the changes taking place in the subsurface. In its origins, time-lapse seismic was conceived as a tool to image intra-reservoir fluid movements via the dependency of reflection amplitudes on acoustic impedance, which is affected by fluid saturation changes in the porous reservoir rocks. However, depletion induced velocity changes are also non negligible. Furthermore, the reflectors may undergo deformation and displacement where compaction and subsidence are involved. As a consequence, analysis of amplitude changes is not straightforward, since in most cases, amplitudes have been shifted by a non negligible time difference or time-shift, presenting not only challenges, but also new possibilities. It is in the possibilities of these time-shifts that the present study is based. This research presents a novel method which numerically solves the static field problem in a multilayered heterogeneous media, relating overburden strain to reservoir depletion. It builds up on previous works based on Geertsma type solutions requiring a homogeneous half-space. This technique makes it possible to estimate the reservoir’s stress state, strain and pressure changes from measured overburden strain by considering the earth as a linear filter with reservoir compaction and overburden strain as parameters. However, some a priori knowledge is needed in the form of a rough subsurface model and a preliminary geomechanics simulation in order to approximate the transfer functions as Wiener filters. In this thesis, the Wiener filter concept has been applied to three real North Sea fields. First, to the Elgin field, an HP/HT shallow marine Upper Jurassic sandstone reservoir located in the UK sector of the North Sea. Then, to the Ekofisk and South Arne fields, both compacting chalk reservoirs in the Norwegian and Danish sector of the North Sea respectively. Additionally, by using a synthetic example the method has been validated and compared with a linear inversion approach using a Geertsma type Green’s function achieving higher accuracy. The project involved not only the development and application of the method itself, but the calculation of time-strains from the measured seismic and the construction and implementation of full field geomechanical models.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 1999.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 248-254).
The mechanical behavior of elastomeric materials is known to be rate-dependent and to exhibit hysteresis upon cyclic loading. Although these features of the rubbery constitutive response are well-recognized and important to its function, few models attempt to quantify these aspects of response. Based on a detailed experimental investigation a new constitutive model for the time-dependence of unfilled elastomers has been developed. The foundation of the model is that the mechanical behavior can be decomposed into two parts: an equilibrium network corresponding to the state that is approached in long time stress relaxation tests; and a second network capturing the non-linear rate-dependent deviation from the equilibrium state. The time-dependence of the second network is further assumed to be governed by the reputational motion of molecules having the ability to significantly change conformation and thereby relaxing the overall stress state. To model the behavior of particle filled elastomers the newly developed constitutive framework is then extended to include filler interactions by amplification of the first strain invariant. In an effort to examine some of the assumptions that are common in the constitutive modeling of particle filled elastomers, a detailed series of micromechanical models were constructed using two- and three-dimensional finite elP.ment simulations. The results indicate that the effect of filler particles can be accurately predicted using stochastic three-dimensional simulations suggesting that successful modeling mainly requires a rigorous treatment of the composite nature of the microstructure and not molecular level concepts such as alteration of mobility or effective crosslinking density in the elastomeric phase of the material. A direct comparison between the new model and experimental data for a number of different elastomers the observed behavior.

Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis represents an effort to characterize the properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). As a composite of polymers, the properties of UHMWPE are time-dependent. It is desired by research sponsors to know the properties of the material at high strain rates, in order to simulate the use of these materials in computer models. Properties believed to be significant which are investigated in this research are the tensile properties of lamina and laminates, and the interlaminar shear properties of laminates. The efficacy of using time-temperature superposition to shift tensile properties of the composite is investigated, and a novel apparent shear strength test is proposed and demonstrated. The effects of processing the material at various temperatures and pressures are also investigated.

Abstract:

A method of using optical fiber to measure strain and correct for the effects of temperature is proposed. A means of measuring apparent strain is given, pure temperature is measured using Fresnel-backscatter based Optical Time Domain Reflectametry, and a method for combining the two measurements to obtain a measurement of mechanically-induced strain alone is developed. The background, theory and experimental results that demonstrate the feasibility of such a system are presented and the results are compared with the performance of existing fiber-based means of measuring temperature. Experiments on several OTDR-addressed, intensity-based optical temperature sensors are performed and a method for manufacturing small air gap splices for use in measuring strain at several places along an optical fiber are presented.

Abstract:
AbstractThe next approach to research on water was to measure the small amount of water actually moving within a plant. The best method is to utilize radioisotope (RI)-labeled water and measure the radiation from outside of the plant. However, it is rather difficult to label water, since there are only limited kinds of RI for tracing water. When utilizing 18F to trace water movement, another fundamental question to consider was the features that characterize drought-tolerant and drought-sensitive plants. It is natural to suppose that drought-tolerant plants have strong water absorption; therefore, by analyzing the water absorption mechanism of tolerant plants and by introducing this function to sensitive plants, it might be possible to make the sensitive plants more tolerant. However, when water uptake was studied in naturally developed drought-tolerant and drought-sensitive cowpea, selected from 2000 cowpea plants grown in the field of Africa, the result was unexpected. Under normal conditions, the amount of water absorbed by the drought-tolerant strain was much lower than that absorbed by the sensitive strain, as if showing the low capability of water absorption. When a drought condition was introduced, the tolerant strain began to absorb much more water than usual, whereas the sensitive strain could not absorb as much water as before. This result provided us with an important lesson. Analyzing the mechanism of drought tolerance only by comparing the water absorption of tolerant and sensitive plants might not readily reveal the reason for drought tolerance. The features of the naturally produced plants showed us different mechanisms that might not match our expectations developed in the laboratory.Next, we performed water measurements using 15O-labeled water, which has an extremely short half-life of 2 minutes. Here, we found another astonishing result, which was “water circulation” in the plant internode. A tremendous amount of water was always leaking from xylem cells, which had been regarded as a mere pipe to transfer water from the root to the aboveground parts. In another subsequent study, it was shown that the water flowing out from the xylem was pushing out the water already present in the stem and then returning to the xylem again to move upward. The water velocity in the internode was kept constant, and through simulation, it took less than 20 minutes to exchange the water already present in the stem with newly absorbed water.

Abstract:
Utilizing the independency of tide, through-flow, surge and high-frequency currents in the Singapore Straits, a Monte Carlo simulation method of combining the different components is proposed, expanding the horizon of available measured and modelled data and facilitating the definition of design current speeds. The statistical model proceeds by, first, making N number of random picks from the non-exceedence probability distributions of the surge, through-flow and high-frequency components. The number of random picks made in a given year for each component, N, is defined by assuming its occurrence rate is Poisson-distributed around a known annual mean value. N number of random start times are then chosen from each year and the maximum value of tidal current predicted over an ensuring 3-day window is combined with the randomly sampled component (either surge, through-flow or high-frequency current). Assuming an intended design life of 50 years, this process is repeated N number of times in each of the 50 years and for each current component, yielding 50 annual maximum values. For random 3-day windows that overlap, the model takes the vector sum of the maximum tidal current and the 2 (or 3) concurrent components. The process is repeated 1000 times, producing 1000 * 50 values of annual maxima which are then assigned non-exceedence probabilities. Return Period levels are obtained directly from the non-exceedence probabilities. The method provides a reduction in design current when compared to values derived by multiplying the exceedence probabilities of the varying independent contributions directly.

Abstract:
This paper presents results from two-dimensional finite element analyses of a centre cracked plate under both plane stress and plane strain conditions. The plate has been loaded in tension and secondary creep conditions have been assumed. The variation of the crack opening area with time has been calculated. It has been shown that the rate of change of the crack opening areas reduces with time up to the redistribution time which approximates the time to achieve steady creep conditions. Thereafter, the rate of change of crack opening area is constant. From curve fits to finite element results, a simplified expression for the rate of change of crack opening area of a stationary crack has been derived in terms of the elastic crack opening area, the creep strain rate, the elastic strain and two characteristic crack lengths (one for a strain field dominated by elastic strains and one for a strain field dominated by creep strains). This expression predicts the rate of change of the crack opening area both during the transient period up to the redistribution time and at all times thereafter.

Abstract:
Abstract Matrix cracking in CFRP laminates results in degradation of mechanical properties of the material and appearance of residual strains. In this study, the residual strains investigated are experimentally and analytically for CFRP [0/756]s laminates. The strain gauges were used in this study to measure the strains. Due to very small residual strains at the unloading condition, the residual strains were also measured at different stress levels for laminates with different crack densities and are compared with theoretical predictions. Time-dependent viscoelastic behavior of the material is also considered to accurately measure the residual strains due to the occurrence of matrix cracks. This was done by using the strain recovery test when the loads were stopped for 1–1.5 hours during unloading and the strain changes during these times were recorded. The experimental results of the residual strains are in reasonably good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The fiber non-linearity properties of the laminates may cause some experimental data to shift above the analytical line.

Abstract:
The nonlinearity of brain tissue material behavior for large deformations at high strain rates was investigated. The viscoelastic properties of brain tissue under high rate ramp- and hold shear strains were determined and nonlinearity in the elastic and time dependent properties of the tissue were examined based on modeling the experimental data. The results revealed that the elastic response of brain tissue is linear from 10% to 50% shear strain, but the time dependent part of the properties in short times shows nonlinear behavior.

Abstract:
Creep deformation property of Grade T91 steels over a range of temperatures from 550 to 625°C was analyzed by means of the empirical creep equation reported in the previous study [1]. The creep equation consists of four time dependent terms and one constant and time to rupture is estimated as a time to total strain of 10%. Accuracy of the creep equation to represent creep curve and to predict time to rupture and minimum creep rate was indicated. Times to minimum creep rate, total strain of 1%, initiation of tertiary creep and rupture were evaluated by the creep equation. Stress dependence of strains at minimum creep rate and the initiation of tertiary creep were analyzed. Contribution of four time dependent terms to the strains at minimum creep rate, total strain of 1% and initiation of tertiary creep was investigated. Three parameters to determine a temperature and time-dependent stress intensity limit, St, were compared and a dominant factor of St was examined. Heat-to-heat variation of the creep deformation property was investigated on two heats of T91 steels contain low and high nickel concentrations.

Full text
Abstract:
Truck platoons have many benefits over traditional truck mobility. Truck platoons have the potential to improve safety and reduce fuel consumption between 5% and 15%, based on platoon configuration. In Illinois, trucks carry more than 50% of freight tonnage and constitute 25% of the traffic on interstates. Therefore, expected fuel savings would be significant for trucks. Deployment of truck platoons within interstate highways may have a direct effect on flexible pavement performance, as the time between consecutive axle loads (i.e., resting time) is expected to decrease significantly. Moreover, platoons could potentially accelerate pavement damage accumulation due to trucks’ channelized position, decreasing pavement service life and increasing maintenance and rehabilitation costs. The main objective of this project was to quantify the effects of truck platoons on pavements and to provide guidelines to control corresponding potential pavement damage. Finite-element models were utilized to quantify the impact of rest period on pavement damage. Recovered and accumulated strains were predicted by fitting exponential functions to the calculated strain profiles. The results suggested that strain accumulation was negligible at a truck spacing greater that 10 ft. A new methodology to control pavement damage due to truck platoons was introduced. The method optimizes trucks’ lateral positions on the pavements, and an increase in pavement service life could be achieved if all platoons follow this optimization method. Life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis were conducted for fully autonomous, human-driven, and mixed-traffic regimes. For example, for an analysis period of 45 years, channelized truck platoons could save life cycle costs and environmental impacts by 28% and 21% compared with human-driven trucks, respectively. Furthermore, optimum truck platoon configuration could reduce life cycle costs and environmental impacts by 48% and 36%, respectively, compared with human-driven trucks. In contrast, channelized traffic could increase pavement roughness, increasing fuel consumption by 15%, even though platooning vehicles still benefit from reduction in air drag forces. Given that truck platoons are expected to be connected only in the first phase, no actions are required by the agency. However, in the second phase when truck platoons are also expected to be autonomous, a protocol for driving trends should be established per the recommendation of this study.
