Abstract:
Aim. To highlight how girlfags and guydykes describe their identities and their experience and interpretation of the identity labels. Background and previous studies. The sexual minority identity of girlfags and guydykes are sometimes perceived as provocative in their contradictory labels. There is little to no previous research on the identities and what is known is mostly presented on internet blogs and forums. The identities seemingly involve aspects on sexual orientation, gender and sexual practice. Research related to sexual minorities, non-normative sex, LGBT and the risk of ill-health with identifying as a sexual minority is presented. Method. Semi-structured interviews in a method of choice was applied to this study so as to ease contact with a sexual minority group. Participants were sought through a Facebook © forum, with a total of eleven interviews with two guydykes and nine girlfags, through video call (2), phone call (1), in person (1), email (6), email with sound files (1). The data was analysed with content analysis. Results and analysis. The results were extensive and had to be delimited. The results were analysed in a sexual constructionist setting using the concept of the heterosexual matrix (Butler, 1990) and the concepts of gender/sex sexuality and nurturance and eroticism presented in van Anders’ (2015) Sexual Configurations Theory (SCT). Three main categories were presented; A play on gender, Sexuality and Orientation, and Identity. Conclusions. There is pride portrayed in the girlfag and guydykes identities. The identity breaks norms regarding gender and sexuality and even sexual orientation within an LGBT context. The results indicate that further research on transgender issues and relational and social aspects of the identities is needed. Keywords: autoandrophilia, gender identity, genderqueer, girlfag, guydyke, homosexuality, LGBT, non-normative, sexual minorities, lesbian man, queer.

Abstract:
TWISTED STRAIGHT is a 103,000 word memoir, which chronicles the author’s ten-year relationship to the ebullient, witty, but destructive woman he married, and their subsequent immersion in gay culture, specifically the circuit-party scene. TWISTED STRAIGHT is set in the heyday of the gay circuit scene, and the 90s, the decade in which it became hip to be gay. It is a unique perspective on a sub-culture off limits to most heterosexual men. Just as importantly, the story describes a man’s search for himself, for a real connection with his electrifying but emotionally damaged wife, for a break from his past, and for meaning in a life buried deep beneath a lifestyle.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with three different aspects of queues and buffers. First, how a novel memory architecture can improve a solution to the problem of supporting a priority queue with priorities from a bounded universe. Second, how we can implement a time queue for two different processes which share parts of the data structure under mutual exclusion. Finally, how careful buffer management can be used to support a new forwarding strategy in network routers. The new forwarding strategy aims at better supporting of prioritized data flows with variable bit-rate.

Basey, Adriana L. "Effects of a traditional and modified straight straight leg raise on EMG characteristics." Virtual Press, 1997. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1048378.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the vastus medialis oblique muscular electromyographical (EMG) activity during two therapeutic exercises: the modified straight leg raise and the traditional straight leg raise. Two subject groups of 10 subjects each, one with anterior knee pain (PHY) and the other group with no history of patellofemoral pathology (NORM), performed the traditional straight leg raise (SLR) and a modified straight leg raise with external hip rotation (MOD). Each subject performed an isometric maximum voluntary contraction and three trials of each of the two therapeutic exercises. The EMG variables analyzed were the percent of the maximum voluntary contraction for each muscle, vastus medialis oblique, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris: the percent of the maximum voluntary contraction of the ratio between the vastus medialis oblique and the vastus lateralis; the percent of the maximum voluntary contraction for the integrated EMG for each muscle; and the percent of the maximum voluntary contraction for the root mean square for each muscle. The statistical analysis was conducted with two-way analysis of variance procedures. The statistical analysis revealed no significant differences; however, the data appeared to illustrate a trend toward more electromyographical activity in the vastus medialis oblique in the PHY subject group during the MOD therapeutic exercise. This suggests that the MOD therapeutic exercise may be able to isolate the vastus medialis oblique muscle in persons with anterior knee pain and allow them to regain strength and normal function earlier than with the use of the SLR therapeutic exercise.

Abstract:
Closing the control loop of a manipulator robot with vision feedback is widelyknown. It concerns nowadays all areas of robotics. Such a return can make a comparison between a desired state and current state, using visual measurements. The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to design several types of kinematic control laws for stereo visual servoing. It strongly involves the formalism of the task function which is a well-known and useful mathematical tool to express the visual error as a function of state vectors. We have investigated the decoupling between the rotational and translational velocities control laws together with the epipolar constraint with a stereo visual feedback. That is why, the visual measurements and features used in this thesis are the 3Dstraight lines. The interests of this type of visual features rely on the robustness against the noise, and the possibility to represent straight lines or other features like points or planes pairs by the Plücker coordinates, as a 3D straight line can be represented as well by two points or the intersection of two planes. This makes all the control laws designed in this thesis valid for another visual features like points

Individuals who associate with a stigmatized group may take on a “courtesy stigma”, and this may lead individuals to dissociate from stigmatized individuals for fear of also being stigmatized (Goffman, 1963). However many heterosexual individuals (i.e., straight allies) openly associate with lesbians and gay men (LG), and/or actively engage in LG social activism despite the risk of assuming a courtesy stigma. The current research examined the perceptions of and the identification processes associated with being straight allies. Results revealed that the willingness to take on a courtesy stigma may be influential in the process of straight ally identification. This research has implications for understanding the processes related to straight ally perceptions and identification. The current research will also promote general understanding of individuals who engage in prosocial behaviors despite possible negative consequences.

Saunders, Karen Leigh. "Queer Intercorporeality: Bodily Disruption of Straight Space." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Culture, Literature and Society, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1028.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the potential of queer embodiment through the experiences of transgendered people. After discussing the importance of researching the body, often left out of academic enquiry, I engage with theoretical frames that radically reconfigure concepts of subjectivity providing the means to reveal the innovative forms of embodiment that participants embrace. Within these frameworks the mind/body division is disrupted and reconfigured to demonstrate that these are not separate entities rather the mind exists in the body as does the body in the mind. Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari's version of the becoming body, I locate the body as a vibrant multiplicity of particles capable of infinite connections as opposed to a separated and contained entity. Through approaching embodiment as a never ending process of becoming I look to the way in which spatial settings such as the family have a major influence on the way in which bodies are formulated. In these spaces, I contend, bodies are directed and regulated to conform to dominant understandings of being. Such directing I argue creates 'straight' bodies/space restricting the presence of queer bodies and the disruption they embody. Extending this spatial investigation I look to the way in which open spaces are straight spaces and how the dynamics of such spaces create the queer body as hyper-visible. Exploring queer as a spatial term I suggest that the queer body exists at an angle to the normative straight line creating new and challenging ways of living. A major theme that runs throughout this thesis is the intercorporeal nature of bodies. In developing this concept I demonstrate the generosity of queer bodies and their radical disruption of the distinction between maleness and femaleness. In doing so I explore how bodies are spatially sexed according to the myth of two-sexes, disrupting such a limited view I demonstrate how queer bodies have the potential to move beyond the boundaries of recognizable identity/bodily categorizes and anatomical understandings and embrace a space of intermezzo/ in-betweeness.

Hall, Stewart. "The variability of the Denmark Straight overflow." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.579541.

Full text
Abstract:
The overflow of dense water from the Nordic Seas to the North Atlantic through Denmark Strait is an important part of the global thermohaline circulation. Therefore changes to the properties of Denmark Strait Overflow Water (DSOW) may have the potential to influence the global climate. This thesis has used observations from current meters, output from an eddy resolving Ocean General Circulation Model and oxygen isotope ratio data to investigate the mechanisms responsible for variability of DSOW salinity. Three main conclusions have been drawn: • DSOW salinity anomalies are probably caused by changes in the proportions of source waters feeding the overflow, rather than changes in the salinity of the source waters. This is caused by an increase in southward wind stress off the East Greenland coast and a subsequent increase in volume flux of fresh intermediate water arriving at the sill. This results in a freshening of DSOW, with a lag of 4 'li months from the wind stress change. • Eddy variability at the moorings may be linked to different proportions of source waters feeding the overflow at the sill, and therefore may be indirectly linked to the wind forcing off the East Greenland coast. This means that short term variability in salinity of a few days at the moorings, could be driven by processes occurring upstream of the sill on much longer interannual time scales. • DSOW freshwater input derives from meteoric water (i.e. no sea-ice melt input) for the period of June 2009, and a proportion of DSOW source water has also formed sea- ice upstream of the sill. Oxygen isotope ratio analysis is a useful tool to provide an insight into the nature of the regions where DSOW source waters may last have been in contact with the surface.

Kirkbride, Alistair David. "Turbulence structure in straight gravel-bed channels." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1994. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15024/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is clear when looking at a gravel-bed river that the flow turbulence is not random: eddies and boils can be seen at the surface. Understanding the behaviour of gravel-bed rivers is limited until the flow structures are described and their origins explained. This work uses a combination of point monitoring of velocity and visualisation of flows over gravel beds in both the field and flume to describe and explain the structure of the boundary layer and the generation mechanisms of flow structures within it. The boundary layer over fluvial gravel beds can be split into two main flow zones. The inner zone consists of eddies developing and shedding off relatively large obstacles clasts and more confused eddying in the inter-obstacle wake zone. There is some evidence to suggest that flow directly above the inner zone is characterised by the domination of negative Reynolds stress associated with the upwards ejection of eddies at higher than average streamwise velocity. The visualisations show that the eddy shedding becomes more confused as the flow rate is increased, and is best described as intermittent. Above the obstacle crests is the outer flow zone in which there are larger flow structures. Visualisations of the vertical streamwise plane and simultaneous logging of velocity at three points suggest that the larger structures consist of inverted wedges of high-speed fluid which move at more than the mean streamwise velocity as "sweep-like" structures. Low-speed fluid is ejected away from the bed after a high-speed front has passed. These structures become increasingly dominant as the flow rate is increased. The high-speed zones appear to be associated with the passage of the front slopes of water surface waves, although this cannot explain some of those monitored in the field. The flow structures are observed to exhibit a crudely intermittent behaviour in the visualisations. Attempts to quantify the intermittency both from the vistlalisations and by time series analysis of both velocity and stress does not produce the clear quasi-periodic velocity signatures that some other workers have found. There is some agreement between the periods of dominant peaks in the spectra of Reynolds stress and calculated burst periods. This is interpreted as meaning that a similar bursting process occurs over mixed gravel beds as that reported over the smooth and uniformly rough surfaces. There is no evidence that eddy shedding produces a periodic signature in either the velocity or stress series. A mechanistic model is proposed which involves the coupling of eddy shedding with the outer flow wedges. In conditions of high relative roughness (or low flow). eddy shedding is predominantly responsible for the generation of turbulent structures in the boundary layer. whereas at low relative roughness (or high flow conditions). the outer zone wedges dominate. This allows the interpretation of flow structure in gravel bed rivers to be made with respect to that observed in sand bed rivers and in tidal flows over gravels. Observations of gravel entrainment in the visualisation experiments suggest that there are two modes of entrainment. At marginal transport conditions. fines are entrained from the wake zones of the larger obstacle clasts by vertical velocity fluctuations. At higher flow conditions, the high speed "sweep-like" structures are responsible for entraining the larger clasts, although the timescale of entrainment is greater that that of an individual flow structure.

Kelly, Tom. "Unwritten procedural modeling with the straight skeleton." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2014. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4975/.

Full text
Abstract:
Creating virtual models of urban environments is essential to a disparate range of applications, from geographic information systems to video games. However, the large scale of these environments ensures that manual modeling is an expensive option. Procedural modeling is a automatic alternative that is able to create large cityscapes rapidly, by specifying algorithms that generate streets and buildings. Existing procedural modeling systems rely heavily on programming or scripting - skills which many potential users do not possess. We therefore introduce novel user interface and geometric approaches, particularly generalisations of the straight skeleton, to allow urban procedural modeling without programming. We develop the theory behind the types of degeneracy in the straight skeleton, and introduce a new geometric building block, the mixed weighted straight skeleton. In addition we introduce a simplifcation of the skeleton event, the generalised intersection event. We demonstrate that these skeletons can be applied to two urban procedural modeling systems that do not require the user to write programs. The first application of the skeleton is to the subdivision of city blocks into parcels. We demonstrate how the skeleton can be used to create highly realistic city block subdivisions. The results are shown to be realistic for several measures when compared against the ground truth over several large data sets. The second application of the skeleton is the generation of building's mass models. Inspired by architect's use of plan and elevation drawings, we introduce a system that takes a floor plan and set of elevations and extrudes a solid architectural model. We evaluate the interactive and procedural elements of the user interface separately, finding that the system is able to procedurally generate large urban landscapes robustly, as well as model a wide variety of detailed structures.

Abstract

The interest in China today is enormous, and media talk about successful firms and entrepreneurs that engage in business with China. This positive image has created a general per-ception that China offers the moon and the stars for Swedish micro and small sized enterprises (MSEs). We still believe that there are many opportunities to extend or build busi-ness upon import from China. However, we question media’s communication that import from China is a straight way to success. If this is an accurate picture of the situation, what is it that makes Swedish companies hesitating about establishing import business from China?

The purpose of this thesis is to identify the reasons for Swedish MSEs to engage in import from China, as well as recognizing the problems they experience. We will by analysing the underlying factors of the problems describe different ways to handle these issues.

We have chosen a qualitative approach with semistructured, deep-going interviews, which we have carried out on six companies that have gone through with the import process from China. The empirical findings will be the base in order to verify the theories on this subject.

We have come to the conclusion that there is a division between production companies and trading companies when it comes to the reason to start importing. Trading firms generally follow the opportunities while production companies are forced to take action because of push effects. Also, the hype about China has helped in choosing China before other countries. The companies in this thesis have generally no trouble in finding a supplier but rather to find suitable suppliers.

The major problems in trading with China are quality and delivery, which many companies handle by shortterm procedures like over-explicitness, constant reminders and increased specifications. They argue that these problems depend on lack of understanding, variation in outlook, different behaviour, as well as pride and attitudes among the Chinese. However, we believe that these issues have their roots in culture, linguistics and different views of how relationships should be considered. Thus it would be a more long term solution to handle the underlying issues which in the extension is a more successful way of importing from China.

Bruce, Robb James. "Straight Benevolence: Preserving Heterosexual Authority and White Privilege." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5648.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes three current and popular media sites, exploring a term I coin “straight benevolence.” An ostensibly supportive and progressive attitude adopted by heterosexuals and expressed toward gay men in the United States, straight benevolence surreptitiously subordinates gayness and further entrenches white masculine heterosexual privilege. In my examination of hip-hop artist Macklemore’s “Same Love,” seven Major League Baseball “It Gets Better” gay-advocacy videos, and the “Suddenly, Last Summer” episode of ABC’s primetime U.S. television series Modern Family, I take an intersectional approach to address the interanimation of sexuality, gender, and race. I ask: In what ways is gay male sexuality normalized and sanitized, which I argue are requirements for straight benevolence? What attitudes toward gayness surface? How do supposedly enlightened, even charitable, stances on gayness construct representations of ideal—straight, male, white—citizens and therefore privilege particular identities? How, in other words, does straight benevolence preserve heterosexist and racist norms?

Abstract:
PETRÓLEO BRASILEIRO S. A.
The study of flows in the annulus is essential for the understanding of the cementing process of oil wells. The drilling mud must have rheological properties to guarantee a good performance in the drill lubricating/ cooling, dragging cuttings until the surface, as well as keeping the well pressure due the hydrostatic column. During the cementing, this mud must be removed and substituted by cement slurry. The cement has the function to coat the wall of the formation, promoting the mechanical stability and preventing infiltrations. The process of substitution occurs by the displacement of a fluid by another one in the annulus between the rock formation and the casing. To improve the cementing process, intermediate fluids (washing or spacers) are used between the drilling mud and the cement slurry. Therefore, it is important to know the effect of the rheology of such fluids on the displacement process. Drilling mud and cement slurry have a viscoplastic behavior. Such materials have yield stress, below which the viscosity is extremely high. However, after this limit, these materials have pseudoplastic behavior, that is, viscosity decreases as a function of the deformation rate. The washing fluid presents newtonian behavior. The rheological model SMD (Souza Mendes and Dutra) was used to describe the viscosity of the non-newtonian fluids. In this work, the process of displacement of a fluid for another one in non-straight horizontal wellbore was numerically analyzed. The drilling of horizontal wells uses a rotary steering technique aiming the drill positioning, adjusting the steering vector. However, a sine profile drilling is gotten, due to the technique of vertical compensation of the direction. Analyzed geometry will be developed in zigzag, to represent this behavior. It was used a commercial software to simulate the tree-dimensional displacement process, using the finite-volume technique, and the VOF (Volume of Fluid) method. Two steps of the process had been studied. In the first situation, the displacer fluid (non-newtonian) simulates the cement slurry while the displaced (newtonian) simulates the spacer fluid. In the second situation, the displacer fluid (newtonian) simulates the spacer fluid while the displaced (non-newtonian) simulates the drilling mud. The interface shape between the fluids has being evaluated varying the rheological properties and the flow, to determine the displacement efficiency. Accented profiles suggest an undesirable fingering of the displacer fluid through the displaced one. On the other hand, flattened profiles indicate a more efficient displacement. Based on these results, it was possible to predict which operational parameters optimize the displacement process.

Emulsions can be used as mobility control agent in enhanced oil recovery methods in order to achieve a more efficient sweep of the reservoir. The application of such technique requires full understanding of how emulsions flow in a porous material. The macroscopic flow behavior can be determined based on the pore scale flow, at which emulsions cannot be treated as a single phase non Newtonian liquid, since the drop diameters are in the same order of magnitude of the pore throats. Experiments by Cobos et al.(1) of flow of emulsions through constricted micro capillaries, wich served as a model to the geometry of a pore throat connecting two adjacent pore bodies, have shown the effect of the dispersed phase on the pressure drop for different flow conditions and emulsions characteristics. In order to widen the range of capillary number and drop size explored in the experiments and to determine the effect of interfacial tension, viscosity ratio, capillary geometry and determine the characteristics of the flow with more the one drop, we study the flow of a drops suspended in a continuous phase flowing through a constricted micro capillary. The evolution of the drop interface is determined by the level set method which is incorporated to a fully coupled implicit Navier Stokes solver based finite element method. We investigate the effect of an initial distance between the two drops, as well as the effects of the interfacial tension on the drops speed. The results provide a more detailed description of the flow of emulsions through pore throats.

Abstract:
Thesis (DTech (Civil Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2007
The diaphragm valve traces its origins to ancient Roman and Greek times, where it was used to control water flow and temperature of hot baths (Century-Instruments, 2007). The particularity of this type of valve is the presence of a diaphragm or membrane which controls the flow. Over the years, the design of this type of valve has evolved into two major varieties. The first is the "weir" type, more suitable for less viscous fluids and a second is the "straight-through" type, suitable for suspensions. This study is focused on the straight-through. With the widespread use of such valves in the mining and mineral processing operations and other industrial applications, although there has been improvement in the selection of the diaphragms and body materials of the valves, as well as actuation methods, improvements were not accompanied by thorough hydraulic investigation to determine the method of calculating the additional head loss caused by the presence of diaphragm valves in pipelines, and in particular for the laminar flow of non-Newtonian fluids. The limited correlations available, such as Hooper's (1981), Perry's (1997) and Miller's (1990) are valid only for Newtonian fluids. Furthermore they are classified as Class 3 (Miller, 1990) which means they are not corroborated in other independent studies. BM

Abstract:
Gay/Straight Alliances aimed at providing sexual minority youth and their allies with support, social events, and activism and education opportunities have proliferated in high schools in the United States over the past two decades. This study employs a qualitative, grounded theory approach to examine how sexual minority youth and their allies navigate gender, sexuality, and social movement participation. A year and a half of observation and 16 semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with Gay/Straight Alliance members in a high school setting in the southeastern United States. The study reveals that, through the lens of frame analysis, the G/SA is analogous to larger and more organized social movement organizations. The findings also suggest members often struggle and engage with issues surrounding sexuality, including its origins, coming out as a process, and judgments and evaluations surrounding sex and desire. Additionally, the findings address elements of gender conformity and non-conformity.

Abstract:
Cloud computation together with robotics has opened up possibilitiesto process large amount of data (big data) generated by the greatnumber of robotic systems. Todays vehicles are equipped withhundreds of sensors generating a lot of data that needs to beprocessed. The data can further be analysed and used to obtainmodels predicting the dynamics of the vehicles. It is thereforepossible to optimise the vehicle performance by studying thepredictive behaviour and finding the best combination of the vehicleparameters. In this thesis, the energy efficiency of an electric racingvehicle is studied on straight road whereafter an optimal velocityprofile is to be found. By using a multiple linear regression togetherwith regularization methods on previously recorded data, apredictive model managed to be obtained with an accuracy of 79.1 %.Having used this model in optimisation process, a velocity profilewas obtained which is shown that can enhance the efficiency of thesystem by 4.08%.
The present thesis focuses on the analysis of communicational actions articulated to consumerist practices of one of the most lasting contemporary juvenile movements, the socalled straight edge. Is proposal includes both the criticism towards mass media and capitalist-rooted consumer society , spreading idiosyncratic values. Assuming a antisystemic approach, it also builds own paths of consumerism, both symbolic and material. It is also to be noted, yet, a strong communicational and technological basis of this movement, which complexly articulates local, regional and global flows. Through a multi-methodological emphasis documental research, bibliographic revision, observation with ethnographic approach the thesis aims to spot within the speeches and narratives of the youngsters the acting line and movement impacts in terms of tendencies and/or new approaches towards the upraising interaction among mediatic cultures and consumerist cultures.

Blyth, Antoinette Elizabeth. "Perspectives on straight-tone singing in Western Classical music." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/9907.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.
Straight-tone singing in Western Classical music is a highly controversial subject. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether singing with a straight-tone was considered healthy or not and whether it is encouraged or recommended in performances today for aesthetic reasons. A secondary objective was to determine how a straight-tone could be produced healthily, if at all. Select opinions of three professional teachers and three international performers about straight-tone singing were solicited. Qualitative interviews were used and their findings compared to those in literature. To put straight-tone singing into a context of vocal health, the vocal physiology and acoustics of a normal functioning voice are discussed. Since a straight-tone is referred to as a vocal fault, vocal health issues are also examined. The question of aesthetics includes reference to straight-tone singing in ensembles or choirs and Early Music and opinions of its use in these contexts is discussed. The nature of the study was qualitative because of the subjective opinions at the centre of the research. The findings of this study are inconclusive as to whether straight-tone singing should be employed or not. However, key findings in this study were that some sources are in favour of straight-tone usage for reasons of taste and some are strongly against it, mostly for reasons of health but also sometimes for aesthetic reasons. Those sources that advocate straight-tone usage also advise against its prolonged use because of vocal health concerns. This study is relevant for all singers, choral directors, teachers of singing and all professionals involved with voice usage, for whom it is essential to have clear definitions of the concepts of straight-tone singing and vibrato and their possible effects on the voice, before they advocate or reject either. It is recommended that further investigation be done into straight-tone singing with a broader sample group of interviewees including professional ensemble singers and voice science specialists.

Abstract:
Children's deceptive strategies and cues remains an important issue for researchers to examine given the potential consequences of young witness' dishonest claims in legal settings. Despite the relevance of this issue, few studies have been conducted on older children's lie-telling tendencies and tactics. The current study was the first of its kind to investigate older children's actual and perceived non-verbal behaviors while committing various types of lies in a simulated court context. Children's strategies to appear convincing were also explored. The findings revealed only one significant difference in liars and truth-tellers non-verbal expressions. Liars displayed relatively fewer signs of positive emotion and of those, children asked to create false information were least likely to smile or laugh. Both liars' and truth-tellers had minimal insight into their own non-verbal behaviors, expressing awareness of only one aspect of their physical appearance. Children reported a vast array of non-verbal and verbal strategies to increase credibility while testifying in the mock courtroom. Liars were significantly more likely than truth-tellers to consciously employ at least one tactic to appear convincing. The results of the current study suggest further research needed to establish developmentally appropriate models for predicting children's behaviors and experiences while lying.

Nagel, Gregory. "Impact and Energy Absorption of Straight and Tapered Rectangular Tubes." Queensland University of Technology, 2005. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15997/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past several decades increasing focus has been paid to the impact of structures where energy, during the impact event, needs to be absorbed in a controlled manner. This has led to considerable research being carried out on energy absorbers, devices designed to dissipate energy during an impact event and hence protect the structure under consideration. Energy absorbers have found common usage in applications such as vehicles, aircraft, highway barriers and at the base of lift shafts. A type of energy absorber which has received relatively limited attention in the open literature is the tapered rectangular tube. Such a structure is essentially a tube with a rectangular cross-section in which one or more of the sides are inclined to the tube's longitudinal axis. The aim of this thesis was to analyse the impact and energy absorption response of tapered and non-tapered (straight) rectangular tubes. The energy absorption response was quantified for both axial and oblique loading, representative of the loading conditions typically encountered in impact applications. Since energy absorbers are commonly used as components in energy absorbing systems, the response of such a system was analysed which contained either straight or tapered rectangular tubes as the energy absorbing components. This system could typically be used as the front bumper system of a vehicle. Detailed finite element models, validated using experiments and existing theoretical and numerical models, were used to assess the energy absorption response and deformation modes of straight and tapered tubes under the various loading conditions. The manner in which a thin-walled tube deforms is important since it governs its energy absorption response. The results show that the energy absorption response of straight and tapered rectangular tubes can be controlled using their various geometry parameters. In particular, the wall thickness, taper angle and the number of tapered sides can be effectively used as parameters to control the amount of absorbed energy. Tapered rectangular tubes display less sensitivity to inertia effects compared with straight rectangular tubes under impact loading. This is beneficial when the higher crush loads associated with inertia effects need to be reduced. Furthermore, though the energy absorption capacity of thin-walled rectangular tubes diminishes under oblique impact loading, the capacity is more maintained for tapered rectangular tubes compared with non-tapered rectangular tubes. Overall, the results highlight the advantages of using tapered rectangular tubes for absorbing impact energy under axial and oblique loading conditions. Understanding is gained as to how the geometry parameters of such structures can be used to control the absorbed energy. The thesis uses this knowledge to develop design guidelines for the use of straight and tapered rectangular tubes in energy absorbing systems such as for crashworthiness applications. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of analysing thin-walled energy absorbers as part of an energy absorbing system, since the response of the absorbers may be different to when they are treated on their own.
