Abstract:
Due to insufficient insights about the scour development around the STRABAG gravity foundation, the Franzius-Institute conducted small- and large-scale physical model tests in wave flumes on a scale of 1:50 and 1:17 in order to investigate the wave-induced scouring phenomena around the foundation and to design a scour protection system. The tests on scour development without a scour protection system show that the main areas which are vulnerable to scour are the contact areas of the foundation. Furthermore, the experiments show that a scour protection system is necessary for the given and investigated wave boundary conditions; the performance of the selected protection system using geotextile sand containers is verified. Additional numerical simulations indicate an amplification of the resulting flow around the foundation under combined loads (waves and current), but without significant change of the flow pattern

In this case comment, I explore the two EFTA Court Judgments in the Fosen-Linjen saga and their opposing views on the interaction between EU/EEA rules on procurement remedies and the more general principle of state liability for breaches of EU/EEA law. I review the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union and, in particular, the perceived inconsistencies between the two 2010 judgments in Strabag and Spijker, which featured very prominently in the legal arguments submitted to the EFTA Court in both Fosen-Linjen cases. I also use the benchmark of the UK Supreme Court’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority judgment to support the view that Spijker reflects the correct understanding of EU/EEA law and that there should be no further debate about it. I submit that the Court of Justice of the European Union would be well-advised to (re)confirm the position enshrined in Spijker at the earliest opportunity, to avoid any perpetuation of this debate in the context of EU/EEA public procurement law.

Abstract:
The length-weight relationship and condition factor of Sarotherodon galilaeus and Oreochromis niloticus were observed in Strabag Lake. A total number of 365 individuals of the fish species were caught during the period of study with Sarotherodon galilaeus constituting 65.21% of the total catch while Oreochromis niloticus made up 34.79% of the catch. The mean weight (W) and mean total length (TL) were 56.04 ± 1.019 g and14.64 ± 0.103 cm respectively for S. galilaeus;62.86 ± 2.184 g and15.84 ± 0.171 cm respectively for O. niloticus. The values of constants a and b (growth exponent) were determined from the length and weight data which transformed into the linear equation of log W = log a + b log L. These parameters were then fitted to the exponential equation, W = [aL]b. The respective exponential equation for the length-weight relationship was W = 0.068[L]2.5 for S. galilaeus and W = 0.034[L]2.7 for O. niloticus which shows that both species exhibited negative allometric growth (b < 3.0). The correlation coefficient (r) and condition factor (K) recorded were 0.944 and 6.70 respectively for S. galilaeus and 0.911 and 3.49 respectively for O. niloticus specimens. The species showed negative allometric growth and were thriving well in the environment.

Abstract:
Standard for designing of concrete structures STN EN 1992-1-1 offers three methods of analysis of second order effects with axial load. Namely, a general method based on non-linear second order analysis and two simplified methods: Method based on nominal stiffness and method based on nominal curvature. According to three series of the experiments of slender concrete columns and after calibration of the non-linear calculations, the authors in following paper compare the global reliability of above mentioned design methods with parametric study. According to executed research is possible to say that the differences in reliability of the design methods are considerable in several cases of the slender concrete columns design. The experiments were executed in the Central laboratory of Faculty of Civil Engineering STU in Bratislava in cooperation with company STRABAG ltd. The series of columns differed only in strength class of concrete (C45/55 for S1, C70/85 for S2, C80/95 for S3) and each series included six tested samples. The geometry and reinforcement of the columns as well as the initial eccentricity of the axial force were design so, that the buckling failure of the columns occurred earlier than the design strength of materials in the most stressed cross-section ran out.

Abstract:
Abstract The European standard for the design of concrete structures that are likely to lose stability requires taking into account the effects of second order theory. This effect increases the impact of a bending moment due to member deformation and additional eccentricity. Slender members can be calculated by the use of a non-linear method. This approach shows a deficit in global reliability for cases where the concrete columns fail due to the loss of stability before reaching the design resistance in the critical cross-sections. Buckling is a brittle failure which occurs without any warning, and the probability of its formation is markedly influenced by the slenderness of the column. Here, the calculation results are presented and compared with the results from an experiment which was carried out in cooperation with STRABAG Bratislava LTD at the Central Laboratory of the Faculty of Civil Engineering SUT in Bratislava. The columns were designed according to the methods stated in STN EN 1992-1-1, namely, a general non-linear method. The focus of this study is to compare multiple approaches based on codes used in Germany (DIN 1045-1, 2001) and Austria (ÖNORM B 4700, 2001) with the present European code mentioned above. The paper aims to compare the global reliability of slender concrete columns with variable slendernesses of 90 and 160.

Abstract:
The construction industry is one of the oldest project-based industries of our time. In construction projects a lot of information is created and distributed, often as construction documents which are legally binding documents which form the basis for the execution of a building. It may be unclear who will read the documents, who’s responsible that documents gets read, that the documents have been understood and executed and how the information is forwarded in the workplace. There are many parameters that are important for managing construction documents, such as accountability, communication, etc. The aim of this study was to identify and answer the question set by the authors. How does STRABAG Sveriges construction document managing work? Since STRABAG Sverige is a typical Swedish contractor the authors consider that the result can be generalized in the sector.  Two case studies were carried out at two of STRABAG Sveriges projects. The authors of the report used a qualitative approach in their observation of the projects. The authors conducted their data collection through qualitative interviews with the leading production staff that the authors selected. This was done to answer their thesis. Throughout the project it became clear that the managing of construction documents is connected to a lot of different parameters. Some of the problems that were determined were for example the start of the buildingprojects, where the routines weren’t properly carried out. Some other examples of problems were insufficient distribution lists, the introduction of new personnel and intern communication. The problems that were determined were analysed in comparison with the theory from literature and conclusions were made out of this material. Thus, STRABAG Sverige received recommendations from the authors about how to improve their management of the construction documents.

Abstract:
In my mixed media pieces and sculptural books, I explore the significance of place. Place is not just a geographical location; it is a layered history that tells a story. My experiences in a specific environment and how I relate to it, study it, remember it, or imagine it drive me to create pieces. While the choices I make are influenced by my own experiences, I want to evoke feelings of familiarity, intrigue, and a sense of nostalgia. In my process, I intuitively layer paint, printed materials, and mixed media to make a foundation for exploration. I continue to experiment by applying more paint and developing layers of media and marks. I cut away, add to, and rework areas in an effort to build a reflection and sense of place. The process itself is as important as the outcome. The stratum of layers reveals the growth and evolution of a work and in turn discloses its own history.

There is an old saying, that after Epaminondas nothing was ever the same again. In this thesis I will focus on three questions: "Epaminondas the man." Who was he? "Epaminondas the general." How did he change the technique of warfare that made it possible to beat the Spartans? "Epaminondas, founder of cities and wall-builder." How did he build the walls around the cities he initiated, that made them resist enemy attacks for many years to come?

While seeking the answers to yhese questions I will make a contextual analysis to get the historical background to all the phenomina involved.

Parmar, Hiteshkumar Chimanlal. "Strabo and India." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23448.

Full text
Abstract:
Scholarship on Strabo’s Geography has long noticed that the procedure adopted by the author in his account of India is inconsistent with the method he follows elsewhere (Puskás 1993). On the one hand, it has been argued that, while describing the subcontinent, the author quotes so extensively from his sources that he allows practically no space for his own reasoning. Such a writing strategy is unlike the practice he normally adopts (Dueck 2000:180-6). On the other hand, after stressing that the geographical writing may only draw on reliable sources and that the reports on India are unreliable (Geography, 2.1.9 C 70), Strabo writes his own account on the subcontinent by drawing on authors he deemed untrustworthy (Geography, 15.1.1-73 C 685-720). This procedure clearly shifts from the method he follows across his work. However, very few studies have been dedicated exclusively to the matter and this thesis proposes to fill the lacuna. In fact, within Strabonian studies, one trend has tended to analyse individual regions described in Geography (Andreotti 1999), while another has examined themes permeating the book (Clarke 2001 and Engels 1998). The description of India has been widely used to reconstruct relevant aspects of ancient history (Karttunen 1997 and Parker 2008). However, little attention has been paid to the author’s conception of India, which will be the main focus of this thesis. By analysing what Strabo selected from his sources and by considering a network of concepts pervading his work, we will see that apparent inconsistencies serve a number of purposes. In Chapter 1, it will be argued that the inclusion or omission of a given detail related to India was relevant for the political agenda underlying the text. In view of the literature produced at the time and the data made available today by the archaeological research on Indo-Roman trade, Strabo’s account shares the ideology underlying the Res Gestae Divi Augusti. Yet, at times, his text lies between a panegyric and a satire of the Roman Empire. Chapter 2 will show that the author creates an image of India that served to support the aforementioned political agenda. By portraying native kings in association with luxury and corruption, the text refers to traditional Greek conception of the East and this has a bearing on the depiction of the Roman Empire. In Chapter 3, we will see that Strabo’s description addresses ethical questions that were left unsolved by Greek philosophical schools at the time, namely, education for women and the relationship between the philosophical way of life and political compromise. Within this setting of philosophical reflection, the text provides a sound set of moral illustrations, exempla, complete with brief autobiographical remarks.

Abstract:
The Dissertation analyzes the 'cartographic' sections of the books III and IV of Strabo’s Geography, which are reported in Greek and accompanied by an Italian translation, a brief comment and an essential bibliography. The basis for this critical analysis is, from time to time, a brief historical profile of the examined region because, ultimately, it is the history that reveals the information “about the position of the places and about the distances" (Polybius). In accordance with Strabo’s description, Iberia, Gaul and Britain represent the milestones of the Roman conquest, that was decisive for the perception and the representation of the most internal areas of the western Europe. This regional trisection corresponds the three chapters of the Dissertation; the sub-divisions of each chapter reflect the peculiarities of the different areas described by Strabo’s sources (Polybius, Posidonius, Artemidorus). The topography of the lived space and the geometric schemes of the bigger geographical areas belong to two different criteria of representation. The general picture establishes an orthogonal scheme. Dictated by erroneous north-south course of the Pyrenees (that derives from Polybius) and based on the delineation of the main physical elements (rivers and mountains), this orthogonal scheme stretches until the Rhine, involving also the southern coast of the Britain. A problem rests unsolved: in which way this scheme

The Worker´s Party of Social Justice is the most significant far right party in the Czech Republic. This work deals with its ideological basis while emphasis is placed on the conception of nation and the attitude towards the political systém and a charakterization of its development too. The first two chapters focus on the analysis of the predecessor: the Worker's Party which in its third phase adopted the German national socialism from the National Democratic Party of Germany. Within the new approach it adopted the notion of white Europeanism which is a contemporaty Aryan rase. The second two chapters contain the analyses of ideological postulates of the Worker's Party of Social Justice which continues to co-operate with the National Democratic Party of Gemany and to adopt its attitudes and strategy. The basis of identity of the Worker's Party of Social Justice is white Europeanism which is common for all native European nations. Incompatibility of some of its attitudes with the values of representative democracy makes it an anti-system party.

Full text
Abstract:
The southeast Ramparts River map area (NTS 106-G/SE) covers part of the northern Mackenzie Mountains and Peel Plateau, Northwest Territories. Bedrock exposures in the area include carbonate and siliciclastic strata ranging from Neoproterozoic (Tonian) to Cretaceous age. These strata were deformed in Cretaceous to Eocene time by folding and contractional faulting associated with Cordilleran deformation. Major structures include the Deadend fault, Tawu anticline, Stony anticline, and Shattered Range anticline. A set of minor pre-Cordilleran extensional faults is preserved within Neoproterozoic strata of the Mackenzie Mountains Supergroup, and are locally associated with diabase or gabbro dykes assigned to the Gunbarrel magmatic event (~780 Ma). Truncation of Neoproterozoic units beneath the sub-Cambrian unconformity indicates tilting or folding of strata before Cambrian time. A second major unconformity between Devonian and Cretaceous strata is marked by low-angle truncation of Paleozoic strata beneath Cretaceous units.

Full text
Abstract:
Cretaceous-Paleogene strata along the eastern coast of Baffin Island, on Bylot Island, and on associated islands north of Cape Dyer, have been known since the early days of exploration of Baffin Bay in the mid-nineteenth century. Studies of these strata in the 1970s-1990s established their clastic nature and revealed details of their stratigraphy, ages, and depositional settings. Onshore strata in the Cape Dyer area accumulated in close association with volcanic deposits related to late-stage rifting in the Late Cretaceous to Early Paleocene that eventually formed Baffin Bay. In contrast, deposits in more northerly areas, such as the Eclipse and North Bylot troughs on Bylot Island, exhibit similar clastic rocks, but lack conspicuous volcanic strata, and have been associated with either the Sverdrup Basin or the Baffin Bay rift. The litho- and biostratigraphy of these deposits are summarized and discussed in terms of differing and contrasting stratigraphic interpretations, age assignments, and depositional environments.

Abstract:
The 2015 Residential Energy Consumption Survey design called for stratification of primary sampling units to improve estimation. Two methods of defining strata from multiple stratification variables were proposed, leading to this investigation. All stratification methods use stratification variables available for the entire frame. We reviewed textbook guidance on the general principles and desirable properties of stratification variables and the assumptions on which the two methods were based. Using principal components combined with cluster analysis on the stratification variables to define strata focuses on relationships among stratification variables. Decision trees, regressions, and correlation approaches focus more on relationships between the stratification variables and prior outcome data, which may be available for just a sample of units. Using both principal components/cluster analysis and decision trees, we stratified primary sampling units for the 2009 Residential Energy Consumption Survey and compared the resulting strata.

Full text
Abstract:
Lower Paleozoic strata occur offshore Labrador (Middle to Upper Ordovician), offshore Baffin Island in western Davis Strait (Upper Ordovician), as well as onshore Baffin Island (Cambrian to Silurian). Paleozoic carbonate rocks (limestone and dolostone units) dominate with occurrences of siliciclastic strata found in the offshore Labrador subsurface (in the Freydis B-87 well) and in outcrop on Baffin Island. In the Labrador-Baffin Seaway, Lower Paleozoic strata primarily exist as isolated erosional remnants, where historically, minimal effort has been made to correlate Paleozoic outliers due to their lateral discontinuity coupled with inconsistent age data. The Lower Paleozoic of the Labrador-Baffin Seaway and Baffin Island can be viewed as two subsets that do not appear to be correlatable: the southern Lower Paleozoic of the Labrador margin and the northern Lower Paleozoic of the southeastern Baffin Shelf and onshore Baffin Island.

Kabanov, P. Devonian of the Mackenzie. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/326094.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper reviews the Devonian-Lower Mississippian strata of NTS areas 106 and 96 lying within Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) Mackenzie project area and its vicinity. These strata are usually well in excess of 1 km in non-eroded sections, cropping out extensively in the Cordillera and occurring in the subsurface of adjacent Interior Plains. Major tectonostratigraphic assemblages are the latest Silurian-Eifelian platform carbonates and evaporites, the latest Eifelian-Frasnian basinal mudrocks with isolated carbonate banks bundled in the Horn River Group (HRG), and the thick coarsening-upward siliciclastic succession of Frasnian-Tournaisian age deposited in the distal setting of the Ellesmerian foreland basin. A major total petroleum system of the HRG defines the economic prospectivity of Devonian strata. Review of the lithostratigraphic nomenclature is supplemented with highlights on HRG depositional environments, patterns of thermal maturity, disconformities, and sedimentary cycles in platform carbonates.
