Abstract:
Competitive global markets are increasing the commercial pressure on manufacturing companies to develop better products in less time. To meet these demands, the appliance manufacturer, Fisher & Paykel, has considered the use of computer simulation of fluid flows to assist in product design. This technology, known as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), has the potential to provide rewarding insight into the behaviour of designs involving fluids. However, the investment in CFD is not without risk. This thesis investigates the use of CFD in oven design expressly to evaluate the numerical accuracy and suitability of CFD in the context of oven product development. CFD was applied to four cases related to oven design, along with detailed experimental investigations, and resulted in a number of relevant findings. In a study of an impinging jet, the SST turbulence model was found to produce better results than the k-ε turbulence model. Measurements indicated that the flow was unsteady, but CFD struggled to reproduce this behaviour. The synergy between experimental and numerical techniques was highlighted in the simulation of a two-pane oven door, and resulted in temperatures on outer surface of the door predicted by CFD to within 2% of measured values. In the third study, a CFD simulation of a tangential fan failed to deliver acceptable steady-state results, however a transient simulation showed promise. The final case examined the flows through the door and cooling circuit of the Titan oven. Velocities predicted by CFD compared well against measurements in some regions, such as the potential core of the jet at the outlet vent, but other regions, such as entrained air, were poor. Temperatures were predicted to within an average of 2% of measured values. It is found that limited accuracy does not necessarily prevent CFD from delivering engineering value to the product development process. The engineering value delivered by CFD is instead more likely to be limited by the abilities of the user. Incompatibilities between CFD and the product development process can reduce the potential value of CFD but the effects can be minimised by appropriate management action. The benefits of CFD are therefore found to be sufficient to merit its use in the product development process, provided its integration into the organisation is managed effectively and the tool is used with discernment. Recommendations for achieving this are provided.

Abstract:
Current research has developed a fully predictive model of an electrically heated common residential oven. This system was modeled using a fully explicit approach and, where applicable, considered natural convective correlations, various radiation networks, and conduction relations. Two oven configurations were modeled, a conventional (unmodified) residential oven and a modified design. By comparing the theoretical results obtained through modeling with experimental results, verification of the modeling assumptions and results has been achieved. This research has produced an analytical design tool for predictive modeling of time dependant surface temperatures, maximum expected temperatures, and the baking performance of various oven designs. Thus this software package can be used to predict the overall feasibility of an oven design prior to fabrication.

Iribagiza, Chantal. "Human-Centered Design of an Air Quality Feedback System to Promote Healthy Cooking." PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4547.

Abstract:
Household air pollution (HAP) is responsible for almost 4 million premature deaths every year, a burden that is primarily carried by women and children in developing countries. The mortality and morbidity impact of HAP can be significantly alleviated through clean cookstove interventions. However, for these interventions to be effective, the new intervention stove must be a substantially cleaner technology and adoption should be high and sustained over time. Woody biomass is the fuel of choice in many developing communities, and contributes substantially to HAP. Several organizations have launched clean cooking interventions to address this issue. However, the majority of those interventions do not address adoption related challenges, that they often face. This thesis explores previous studies on Human-Centered Design (HCD) and the impact of feedback and data access on behavior change. It details a HCD process and methodology applied during the design process of an air quality feedback system, to improve adoption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cookstoves in Rwanda. The feedback system is intended to provide real-time air quality information to stove users and potentially encourage them to abandon traditional biomass cookstoves in favor of the cleaner LPG stoves.

Abstract:

Introduction: Pneumonia and diarrhoea are leading causes of death in children. There is a need to develop effective interventions. Objective: We present the design and baseline findings of a community-randomised controlled trial in rural Peru to evaluate the health impact of an Integrated Home-based Intervention Package in children aged 6 to 35 months. Methods: We randomised 51 communities. The intervention was developed through a community-participatory approach prior to the trial. They comprised the construction of improved stoves and kitchen sinks, the promotion of hand washing, and solar drinking water disinfection (SODIS). To reduce the potential impact of non-blinding bias, a psychomotor stimulation intervention was implemented in the control arm. The baseline survey included anthropometric and socio-economic characteristics. In a sub-sample we determined the level of faecal contamination of drinking water, hands and kitchen utensils and the prevalence of diarrhoegenic Escherichia coli in stool specimen. Results: We enrolled 534 children. At baseline all households used open fires and 77% had access to piped water supplies. E. coli was found in drinking water in 68% and 64% of the intervention and control households. Diarrhoegenic E. coli strains were isolated from 45/139 stool samples. The proportion of stunted children was 54%. Conclusions: Randomization resulted in comparable study arms. Recently, several critical reviews raised major concerns on the reliability of open health intervention trials, because of uncertain sustainability and non-blinding bias. In this regard, the presented trial featuring objective outcome measures, a simultaneous intervention in the control communities and a 12- month follow up period will provide valuable evidence.

Green, Susan Elaine. "Sticks and stones: a Blue Ridge Mountain retreat." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/74529.

Full text
Abstract:
Given a sloping wooded site in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, the problem of the thesis project was to design a retreat that would fit the environment and the people that would inhabit it. It was a searching for the interdependence between the landscape and the building. Equally important was a search for a structure that would give architectural integrity to the house. The design process included a time of discovery and clarification of values and priorities. Two additional steps during the schematic design were processes architect Charles Moore referred to as"mapping" and"collecting''. These processes help to establish relationships between the inhabitants and things they recognize. Structural elements of post and beam construction gave a sense of order in the design layout and helped to organize the spaces within the form of the house. A system of equidistant columns formed by four wood posts also provided the physical linkage between the building and the site. Native field stone was used for the large piers that supported the columns as well as for the perimeter walls of the living room structure. The inner landscape of the house, the pathways, the rooms and the machines within them, developed from the basic idea that the building would grow from a central axis or “spine” that originated from the outside at the street's edge, extended across the site, and moved into the building to become the main artery of the structure as well as the connection between outside and inside.

Many people in the developing areas of the world struggle to cook with stoves that emit hazardous fumes and contribute to green house gas emissions. Electric stoves would alleviate many of these issues, but significant barriers to adoption, most notably lack of reliable electric power, make current commercial options infeasible. However, a stove with an input power of 24V DC elegantly solves the issue of intermittent power by allowing car batteries to be used instead of a grid connection, while also allowing seamless integration with small scale solar installations and solar-based micro-grids. However, no existing commercial stoves nor academic research have attempted to create an induction stove powered from a low voltage DC source. This paper presents the design of a low voltage current-fed, full-bridge parallel resonant converter stove. The dynamics of this new topology are discussed in detail and simulations are provided to analyze the behavior. Additionally, a practical implementation of a 500W - 1 kW stove is described. This stove is the first of it's kind and represents a new contribution to both the field of induction cooking and the field of clean cooking solutions for the developing world.

Rahmati, M. T. "Incompressible Navier-Stokes inverse design method based on unstructured meshes." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2006. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1445805/.

Abstract:
Two inverse methods for turbomachinery blade design are developed. In these inverse design approaches blade shapes are computed for a specified design parameter such as mass-averaged tangential velocity or pressure loading distribution. These inverse methods directly define a geometry needed to obtain these prescribed target design parameters which are related to the performance of turbomachinery blades. The first method is based on the prescription of pressure loading on the blade while the second method is based on the prescription of mass-averaged tangential velocity on the blade. In both methods the blade thickness is also prescribed. These choices of target design prescription allow the designer to control the blade work distribution and the overall flow field effectively. It also prevents the generation of unrealistic blades as the designer directly control the blade thickness. Mesh movement algorithm is an integral part of the current inverse design method as once the blade surface is modified during the design iterations the corresponding unstructured mesh also has to be altered. The mesh movement algorithm is based on a linear tension spring analogy which is a very fast and robust mesh movement method. The capabilities of these design methodologies have been verified for inverse design of two dimensional turbomachinery blades. The flow analysis algorithm is an integral part of the current methodologies. It is based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes flow equations on unstructured meshes. The capability of the flow analysis algorithm is verified for three-dimensional external and internal incompressible flow solutions. Indeed the current method is applied for simulation of flow over marine propeller blades in open water. Also it is applied for the flow analysis of the stator and rotor blades of a low-speed axial turbine.

The pressure-correction projection method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation is approached as a preconditioned Richardson iterative method for the pressure- Schur complement equation. Typical pressure correction methods perform only one iteration and suffer from a splitting error that results in a spurious numerical boundary layer, and a limited order of convergence in time. We investigate the benefit of performing more than one iteration. We show that that not only performing more iterations attenuates the effects of the splitting error, but also that it can be more computationally efficient than reducing the time step, for the same level of accuracy. We also devise a stopping criterion that helps achieve a desired order of temporal convergence, and implement our method with multi-stage and multi-step time integration schemes. In order to further reduce the computational cost of our iterative method, we combine it with an Aitken acceleration scheme. Our theoretical results are validated and illustrated by numerical test cases for the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations, using Implicit-Explicit Backwards Difference Formula and Runge-Kutta time integration solvers. The test cases comprises a now classical manufactured solution in the projection method literature and a modified version of a more recently proposed manufactured solution.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to do a comparison between luxurious fashion stores and normal/regular ones, describe the differences in terms of the store design and discuss the influences and their impact on the customer experience. The second purpose is to give suggestions to normal/regular fashion stores from Sweden regarding improvements that they might need to enhance the customer’s shopping experience. In order to complete this study, both primary and secondary data were collected. Primary data was collected by performing three different methods. First was an observation, which was done in both luxurious and normal/regular fashion stores. An interview was performed with the manager of H&M Västerås. Last but not least method was to apply a questionnaire in order to find out the customer’s opinion concerning their shopping experience. The secondary data was gathered from Mälardalen’s University data bases and library and also from online resources. Conclusion:               The luxurious fashion stores have a unique way of displaying their garments, which gives an idea of neatness, comfort and order. They also have special services that add to the customer’s shopping experience, enhancing it. Even thought normal/regular fashion stores are different from luxurious, they give a big importance to the quality, the price and displaying their garments in a specific order. When it comes to the shopping experience customers’ encounter, most of them considered that it is important to have helpful staff, right temperature, appropriate music and light and clean environment. Overall it can be seen, that even thought they are completely different, the normal/regular fashion stores still try to offer the best experience to their customers.

Tripathy, Sonali. "Detection of phantom inventories at retail stores using a Bayesian approach." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/122257.

Abstract:

Phantom inventories result from mismatch in the inventory that is actually available at a store on the shelf and the existing inventory as per the data record at any retail store. Inventory on hand (IOH) record for each SKU(stock keeping unit) at any store is summation of on-shelf and back room inventory. Mismatch in this data impacts the product availability at a store and in turn results in lost opportunities of revenues for the store and the CPG (consumer product goods) manufacturer. A phantom inventory remains unnoticed unless an intervention such as regular shelf re-stocking, physical audit or consumer inquiry occurs at the store. However, even these interventions may not coincide with actual shelf stock out event and hence, the phantom inventory would continue to exist. This report proposes a Bayesian approach based on consecutive zero sales in the POS (point of sales system) while inventory IOH remains positive through the observation time. The daily demand is designed using a negative binomial distribution, which is used further to determine the posterior probability of phantom inventories given a specific set of consecutive days without sales of a SKU at a store. The prevalence of phantom inventories is then calculated using all the number of consecutive days without sales for each SKU store combination and is compared to a Gumbel distribution. This approach has been applied on one data set including POS and IOH data provided by a CPG manufacturer, where the prevalence was found to be 11.63%.

Billions of people around the globe rely on solid fuels such as wood or charcoal to heat their homes and cook their meals which negatively impacts health as well as the environment. Improved cook stoves negate these problems but are often not used over time. Stove use monitors (SUMs) are attached to improved cook stoves to track adoption rates. Three basic designs were generated of a housing for the SUM. They were analyzed by considering material choices, manufacturing options, and customer needs. Thermal images were taken of an improved cook stove in use to measure temperatures at key locations around the stove. It was found that the sides and handles of the stove attain a maximum temperature of above 150 °C (300 °F), and the feet and base of the stove below that. It was determined the best course of action is to design a housing for the base or feet of the stoves and use resin casting and later injection molding as production needs increase.

In the highly competitive retail industry, merchandise out-of-stock (OOS) is a significant and pertinent problem. This thesis performs a diagnostic analysis on retail out-of-stocks using empirical data from a major retailer. In this thesis, we establish the empirical relationship of OOS rate with the amount of safety stock carried, the time between orders and the forecast error, providing insights to the effects of these three factors on the probability of OOS occurrences. The root causes of OOS are also examined in the thesis. We find that up to 34% of OOS can be attributed to forecast error while up to 22% can be attributed to delay in order replenishment. For the OOSs that were associated with order delay, we can trace 60% of these to out-of-stock at the store's distribution center (DC). The thesis also examines a peculiarity in the occurrence of OOSs. We found that the OOS rate of Class C items is significantly higher in stores with higher sales volume. We can attribute much of this phenomenon to three factors: stores with higher sales volume hold less safety stock for Class C items, have a shorter time between orders and have relatively larger forecast errors.

Lee, Youjung. "A study on the application of contemporary visual art into flagship stores of luxury fashion brands." Thesis, Brunel University, 2014. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/8568.

Full text
Abstract:
Luxury fashion brands face a new challenge as to how to sustain brand growth while maintaining the exclusivity of brands due to the democratisation of the luxury phenomenon which is mainly driven by the emergence of ‘new luxury’ and changes of consumption style ‘trading up’. Luxury consumers are becoming disillusioned with the vulgarisation of luxury goods and prefer exclusive luxurious experiences. In order to keep pace with the changes in luxury consumer needs and promote an image with creative and luxurious connotations, luxury brands increasingly associate with contemporary visual art through diverse kinds of channels. Among the channels, great attention has been given to contemporary visual art exhibitions within a flagship store due to its benefits: geographical location, cutting investment cost and offering direct art experience to consumers. However, there is no theoretical research investigating the main points to be considered in applying contemporary visual art exhibitions to flagship stores of luxury fashion brands. Moreover, there is a need for a systematic approach in applying contemporary visual art exhibitions to flagship stores of luxury fashion brands as relying mainly on a designer’s intuition might pose a problem: delivering different messages from those intended. Through the research, four main propositions were identified which need to be considered when luxury fashion brands apply contemporary visual art exhibitions to their flagship stores: 1) brand communication with consumers, 2) the fit between brand identity and that of an artist, 3) consumers’ value/benefits in the way that enhance consumers’ aesthetic experience of art and 4) artists’ value/benefits. Models including a conceptual model and a design tool kit were developed and tested with experts in this field. The proposed models are decision supporting tools which provide a comprehensive overview regarding the main points to be considered as well as support finding a high fit artist to brand identity. They offer advantages as follows: 1) the conceptual framework improves understanding of the needs/values of the three main stake holders such as luxury fashion brands, consumers and artists for this practice and provides an insight into how to address them in applying contemporary visual art exhibitions to flagship stores of luxury fashion brands 2) the tool kit assists in making a decision when selecting artists or artworks and offers benefits to all the stake holders: 1) luxury brand value by managing their touch points effectively that ultimately lead to enhancing brand communication, 2) consumer value by preventing confusion caused by disharmonious messages from all the touch points within flagship stores, and 3) artist value by finding a matched brand for synergy between brands and artists.

A Newton-Krylov method is developed for the solution of the steady compressible Navier-Stokes equations using a Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization on unstructured meshes. An element Line-Jacobi preconditioner is presented which solves a block tridiagonal system along lines of maximum coupling in the flow. An incomplete block-LU factorization (Block-ILU(O)) is also presented as a preconditioner, where the factorization is performed using a reordering of elements based upon the lines of maximum coupling used for the element Line-Jacobi preconditioner. This reordering is shown to be far superior to standard reordering techniques (Nested Dissection, One-way Dissection, Quotient Minimum Degree, Reverse Cuthill-Mckee) especially for viscous test cases. The Block-ILU(0) factorization is performed in-place and a novel algorithm is presented for the application of the linearization which reduces both the memory and CPU time over the traditional dual matrix storage format. A linear p-multigrid algorithm using element Line-Jacobi, and Block-ILU(O) smoothing is presented as a preconditioner to GMRES.
(cont.) The coarse level Jacobians are obtained using a simple Galerkin projection which is shown to closely approximate the linearization of the restricted problem except for perturbations due to artificial dissipation terms introduced for shock capturing. The linear multigrid preconditioner is shown to significantly improve convergence in terms of the number of linear iterations as well as to reduce the total CPU time required to obtain a converged solution. A parallel implementation of the linear multi-grid preconditioner is presented and a grid repartitioning strategy is developed to ensure scalable parallel performance.

Abstract:
A discrete adjoint method is developed and demonstrated for aerodynamic design optimization on unstructured grids. The governing equations are the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a one-equation turbulence model. A discussion of the numerical implementation of the flow and adjoint equations is presented. Both compressible and incompressible solvers are differentiated, and the accuracy of the sensitivity derivatives is verified by comparing with gradients obtained using finite differences and a complex-variable approach. Several simplifying approximations to the complete linearization of the residual are also presented. A first-order approximation to the dependent variables is implemented in the adjoint and design equations, and the effect of a "frozen" eddy viscosity and neglecting mesh sensitivity terms is also examined. The resulting derivatives from these approximations are all shown to be inaccurate and often of incorrect sign. However, a partially-converged adjoint solution is shown to be sufficient for computing accurate sensitivity derivatives, yielding a potentially large cost savings in the design process. The convergence rate of the adjoint solver is compared to that of the flow solver. For inviscid adjoint solutions, the cost is roughly one to four times that of a flow solution, whereas for turbulent computations, this ratio can reach as high as ten. Sample optimizations are performed for inviscid and turbulent transonic flows over an ONERA M6 wing, and drag reductions are demonstrated.

Abstract:
Structured data stores have been the dominating technologies for the past few decades. Although dominating, structured data stores lack the functionality to handle the ‘Big Data’ phenomenon. A new technology has recently emerged which stores unstructured data and can handle the ‘Big Data’ phenomenon. This study describes the development of an artefact to aid in the analysis of NoSQL document data stores in terms of relational database model constructs. Design science research (DSR) is the methodology implemented in the study and it is used to assist in the understanding, design and development of the problem, artefact and solution. This study explores the existing literature on DSR, in addition to structured and unstructured data stores. The literature review formulates the descriptive and prescriptive knowledge used in the development of the artefact. The artefact is developed using a series of six activities derived from two DSR approaches. The problem domain is derived from the existing literature and a real application environment (RAE). The reviewed literature provided a general problem statement. A representative from NFM (the RAE) is interviewed for a situation analysis providing a specific problem statement. An objective is formulated for the development of the artefact and suggestions are made to address the problem domain, assisting the artefact’s objective. The artefact is designed and developed using the descriptive knowledge of structured and unstructured data stores, combined with prescriptive knowledge of algorithms, pseudo code, continuous design and object-oriented design. The artefact evolves through multiple design cycles into a final product that analyses document data stores in terms of relational database model constructs. The artefact is evaluated for acceptability and utility. This provides credibility and rigour to the research in the DSR paradigm. Acceptability is demonstrated through simulation and the utility is evaluated using a real application environment (RAE). A representative from NFM is interviewed for the evaluation of the artefact. Finally, the study is communicated by describing its findings, summarising the artefact and looking into future possibilities for research and application.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose: To examine whether there is an interest in a public showroom for Swedish consumers and fashion e-retailers and how it could benefit them. Design/methodology/approach: Qualitative interviews with two Swedish fashion e-retailers were conducted in order to understand if there was an interest in a public showroom amongst the chosen companies. A survey with 200 participants was carried out with students from the Swedish School of Textiles, to get an understanding of their e-shopping behavior. Findings: It was found that there is an interest in implementing a public showroom. According to the survey results, a majority were in favor of trying on a product before purchasing it. The fashion e-retailers that were interviewed thought that it would be of interest if it would function more as a temporary pop-up solution. Practical implications: The findings are of relevance for fashion e-retailers that are potentially interested in an additional marketing and communication channel for their internal brands. Originality/value: As there was no research regarding Swedish fashion e-retailers attitude towards a public showroom, this thesis contributes with new findings to the academics. Furthermore, it can be used as a guideline to fashion e-retailers in the event of opening of a public showroom.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Global online retail sales are on the rise and are predicted to experience a double digit growth annually over the next three years. Given little marginal cost involved in adding new products and brands to their catalogues, online retailers tend to increase product and brand offerings to increase sales by selling products that could not have been sold due to space constraints in physical stores. Frank Urbanowski, Director of MIT Press, attributed the 12% increase in sales of backlist titles directly to increased accessibility to these titles through the Internet. For consumers, the ability to buy products that they would not have otherwise bought increases their consumer surplus.

Despite preferring a large assortment of products in online retail stores due to product variety and diversity in brand choices, this poses a problem to consumers as the number of alternatives and attributes reduces their confidence in the selection of a product to purchase; product comparison and evaluation also becomes a difficult task. Thus, an online retail store that does not facilitate easy product information search, comparison, and evaluation would cause consumers to make poor purchase decisions. In this thesis, I investigate how the design parameters of online stores such as the presentation of product information, product comparisons, consumer reviews, and recommendations influence consumers' information seeking and decision making process.

Specifically, the objectives of this thesis are to learn the individual and joint effects of such design parameters on the effort that consumers expend in the shopping process, quality of their purchase decisions, and their satisfaction with the shopping experience. A controlled experiment was conducted online using six variants of an online retail store to understand the effects of such design features. While the result was modest, the study found that presentation of information that allows consumers to have a preview of the subsequent page after clicking on a link has moderate effect on consumer's physical and cognitive effort in seeking product information, the purchase decision they made, and their satisfaction with an online store.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Study question: How can the process for article classification and procurement be improved in a new implementable inventory policy with the objective to reduce inventory costs. Purpose: The purpose of this degree project is to design a procurement policy which helps to minimize the annual capital tied up in inventory. Method: The procurement policy is created by a mixed method with a focus on the quantity inputs of secondary data and minor involvements of qualitative from primary data. Inventory management formulas from the theoretical framework constitute the conducted model. With the ground work from theory and inputs from interviews, the research approach has been deductive and followed the guidelines of Ali and Birley (1999). ABB Capacitors is the case study of this degree project which the model has been tested and verified upon. Conclusion: The degree project resulted in procurement policy which includes a calculation model and inventory analysis which has shown success from the theoretical comparisons, and it indicates that the procurement policy is functioning as intended. Mathematical formulas are mere tools in a procurement policy, experience and know-how are two pieces which importance should not be neglected.Weaknesses of this policy concern inventory capacity because the calculations’ purpose is to minimize inventory cost by procuring to an economic optimum. There is a chance that physical structure allows fewer quantities than what is financially best. The policy is recommended for manufacturing industries.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Why was the Kimberley Process (KP) able to devise a soft law institution 'with teeth' whereas the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) failed. In various policy fields and particularly in the extractive industries, multi-stakeholder initiatives (MSIs) are becoming more important for regulating business behaviour. However, International Relations (IR) has as yet failed to explain why some succeeded in designing a strong international institution whereas others failed. To answer the research question the thesis first establishes a methodology for assessing strong and weak institutionalisation of MSIs. I argue that functional regime theory is inadequate at assessing MSIs as it does not capture institutional variety within soft law. Based on the Global Governance literature, the thesis establishes four indicators - membership, obligation, monitoring and enforcement, which allow us to evaluate the degree of institutionalisation. How can we account for institutional variety of MSIs. Mainstream IR theories are not able to explain the differences between the two case studies as they gloss over the differences in normative and material structures assuming that complete rationality and concerns for efficiency are critical when determining institutional design. I argue that norm entrepreneurs push for strong institutionalisation by the social mechanism of norm diffusion. Succeeding in diffusing the norm by using political strategies such as framing and structural power galvanises support for strong institutionalisation. Nevertheless, norm diffusion can fail when political opportunity structures empower norm opponents rather than norm entrepreneurs. I argue that the impact of norms varies, depending on distinct structural settings. Thus I unveil the circumstances under which new norms do not gain acceptance from the international community. In summary, when accounting for the MSI institutionalisation process, we not only need to pay attention to political strategy and agents, but must include in the analysis normative and material structures as drivers of or constraints to norm diffusion.

Abstract:
In this paper, the design, optimization and analysis of broadband full-Stokes polarimeters with immunity to both Poisson and Gaussian noise are presented. Different from the commonly-used optimization metrics such as, the condition number (CN), the equally weighted variance (EWV), or the polarimetric modulation efficiency (PME) for Gaussian noise, the optimally balanced condition for Poisson noise (BCPN) is, for the first time, proposed and used as a metric for the optimization of polarimeters. The numerical results show that the polarimeters optimized with the BCPN have immunity to both Poisson and Gaussian noise. The broadband polarimeters optimized from the BCPN are achromatic and have similar polarimetric modulation properties over the waveband, in contrast to the polychromatic polarimeters optimized from the CN, EWV and PME, whose polarimetric modulation properties vary with wavelength. Abstract:

Abstract:
The data-driven adaptive algorithms are explored as a means of increasing the accuracy of Reynolds-averaged turbulence models. This dissertation presents two new data-driven adaptive computational models for simulating turbulent flow, where partial-but-incomplete measurement data is available. These models automatically adjust (i.e., adapts) the closure coefficients of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) k-ω turbulence equations to improve agreement between the simulated flow and a set of prescribed measurement data. The first approach is the data-driven adaptive RANS k-ω (D-DARK) model. It is validated with three canonical flow geometries: pipe flow, the backward-facing step, and flow around an airfoil. For all 3 test cases, the D-DARK model improves agreement with experimental data in comparison to the results from a non-adaptive RANS k-ω model that uses standard values of the closure coefficients. The second approach is the Retrospective Cost Adaptation (RCA) k-ω model. The key enabling technology is that of retrospective cost adaptation, which was developed for real-time adaptive control technology, but is used in this work for data-driven model adaptation. The algorithm conducts an optimization, which seeks to minimize the surrogate performance, and by extension the real flow-field error. The advantage of the RCA approach over the D-DARK approach is that it is capable of adapting to unsteady measurements. The RCA-RANS k-ω model is verified with a statistically steady test case (pipe flow) as well as two unsteady test cases: vortex shedding from a surface-mounted cube and flow around a square cylinder. The RCA-RANS k-ω model effectively adapts to both averaged steady and unsteady measurement data.

Abstract:
When working with complex aircraft design it is necessary to be able test configurations easily. At Saab this is done in several ways. When looking at the weapons integration on the Gripen Aircraft, clearance analysis (called feasibility studies at Saab) are created to evaluate if new external stores can be mounted. This is done manually in CATIA by measuring and evaluating the result. To ease the work when performing these repetitive tasks, it is possible to take advantage of Knowledge Based Engineering, KBE. This thesis revolves around implementing KBE in the process. The approach is to create a configurator that can handle the different external stores and perform the required tasks. The end result is a configurator with a Graphical User Interface, GUI, in which the user gets help with the feasibility study and which requires light manual input from the user. The configurator performs the study and produces a Word report for the user to examine. The resulting time saving is around 75 to 80 percent from the original process. The conclusion is that the configurator can facilitate the feasibility studies at Saab by reducing the time and lower the threshold for the user. Even though the process is not fully automated, the configurator is judged to perform at a satisfying degree.
