Al, Hourani Ehab Faisal. "Natural Light Transition Through A Healthcare Setting." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/105035.

Full text
Abstract:
Healthcare workers' overall performance and patients' well-being are crucial to wellness design and the overall productivity of the working environment. The purpose of this thesis is to narrate how natural light - a key aspect of biophilic design - can give great health outcomes and enhance the placemaking of a healthcare setting. Hence, this dissertation attempts to deal with placemaking and formation as an inside-outside dialogue that connects users to nature by implementing the idea of transitioning natural light through space and structure. In doing so, lighting explorations were conducted as series of physical models and case studies to help understand and analyze various effects of light at different times of the day. These explorations narrate a story about the journey of the medical worker and the patient throughout the setting of the apertures, walls, path, and canopy. Also, in response to the topography, a south-facing aperture wants to be framed, while a north-facing aperture can be an open wall, a smooth polished continuous wall and path can act as a canvas when the filtered light falls on it, while rough fragmented walls rise from earth acting as structural walls, and a cluster of trees can act as a natural canopy to provide shelter from the sun, while a steel canopy can shelter other areas from the rain or sun.
Master of Architecture
Biophilia, the innate human instinct to connect with nature, is a foundational concept to biophilic architecture. This concept seeks to enhance the well-being of users when in a human-made environment, by incorporating vital aspects of nature in a building. Therefore, applying a biophilic-based design approach to a high stressed place like a hospital can be worthwhile in numerous ways to patients, their families, and healthcare workers. The thesis addresses the aspects of Biophilia and looks deeper into the effects and benefits of natural light in a healthcare setting.

Bullock, Kurt E. "Narrative space and time : the rhetoric of disruption in the short-story form." Virtual Press, 2001. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1213154.

Full text
Abstract:
This study traces spatial and temporal disturbances in the modem short story structure. Edgar Allan Poe's "indefinitiveness" and Kenneth Burke's "actualization" serve as historical foundations for this investigation, which leads to contemporary frameworks proposed by such theorists as Gerard Genette, Umberto Eco, Wolfgang Iser, Paul Ricoeur, Peter Brooks, James Phelan, and Susan Sniader Lanser. In particular, I explore how effect operates as a predominant concern of short fiction. Short fiction is a rhetorical interaction encumbered by spatial and temporal constraints, and its narrative teleology is necessarily disrupted by rhetorical techniques. Narrative's boundaries are purposefully violated, its tempo twisted and contorted, exposing a purposeful tension in the rhetorical engagement of author, text and reader. Instabilities crafted within the text disrupt time-space expectations of readers.Importantly, effect is perceived as a rhetorical device within short fiction, and so in this study the text serves as a site of transference privileging equally writer and reader. Conditions of possibility and understanding are invested in the text by the author through techniques of spatial disruption and temporal discontinuity, and then reinvested in the reader by the narrative through the text's generation of uncertainty. Short fiction serves as an invitation by the author for the reader to construct explanations; devices work to disrupt the time-space constraints of the genre, establishing as they do a narrative contract between author and reader that is resolved in and from the text.Burke considers this to be shaping prose fiction to the author's purposes, an act which "involves desires and their appeasements" - and one which purposefully aims for a particular effect. But what are the limits of purposefulness in short fiction? I examine both textual effect and reader affect, relying particularly on Iser and Eco, and turn to Brooks in conclusion to summarize the role of desire in and from the text, and to Phelan to critique the place of rhetoric in establishing and maintaining that desire. My analysis discloses that time-space disruption, employed as a rhetorical strategy by short story writers, serves to heighten rather than threaten the mediated engagement of writer/text/reader in short fiction, producing a measured effect.

Abstract:
In this study. it is argued that mentoring can be a successful way of inducting the novice teacher into the profession. The qualitative case study of mentoring in a large Queensland high school called for the purposes of anonymity "Darlington Heights State High School" investigates five main areas of mentoring. The project looks at what mentors do, why relationships are initiated and maintained, what relationships are necessary for the mentoring to occur. the environment in which mentoring talces place and what mentors undertalce to foster the relationship. Mentors and mentees appear to have values and expectations that they bring to the mentoring relationship. It is suggested that if a mentor-mentee pair share these values and expectations, more effective mentoring may result. There also appears to be certain actions and strategies that mentors undertalce to foster the relationship. The effective mentoring relationship itself is characterised by open communication, compatibility, flexibility and management with a locus of control which progresses from dependency to interdependency as the relationship evolves. Contexn1al factors such as the school environment, the teaching and learning environment and the presence or absence of significant events play a part in effective mentoring. Recommendations include *the selection of teachers as mentors who have values and expectations matching their mentee and who engage in a number of actions in mentoring; *the training of mentors in counseUing and peer coaching for their role m the induction of beginning teachers; *the appointment of an Educational Adviser to each region particularly where there are large numbers of beginning teachers; *the provisions of adequate time and a suitable environment for mentoring.

Sonesson, Matilda, and Oliver Thörner. "Milk: From a healthy drink to aclimate threat and back again. The media story : A text analysis of how Swedish newspapers have framed aspects of milk between 2012 and 2017." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-354795.

Abstract:
Media is a powerful agent within society, that works as a gatekeeper for the media arena and therefore decides what topics are discussed and which are not (Pinto et al., 2016; Anderson, 2009) By setting the agenda and by framing messages, media can influence the public perception and therefor also the culture within society. However, it is said that media will reflect the most dominant culture within society, it is therefore of interest to see how the Swedish media portray and frame Swedish milk and the milk industry, that on hand is argued to be a threat towards the climate but on the other hand has a long history of being connected to the Swedish culture. When studying the four most read newspapers in Sweden published between 2012 and 2017 we found that even if the Swedish milk and the milk industry was questioned for being unhealthy or argued for being an environmental threat, the positive framing of milk was always more visible. Environmental impacts of milk and the milk industry was repeatedly downsized and even spoken for in opposite direction, that the Swedish milk and the Swedish milk industry is good for the environment. This would suggest that the strong position of milk within the Swedish society have the ability to undermine any threat, it is therefor of interest to further study the culture aspects of media framing not at least connected to products that is in many studies argued for being an environmental threat. Due to impact media may have on the society, how media frame and portray sustainability and sustainable products is of high interest for further research. More research is also needed to understand who gets to use the media arena to convey their messages, not at least within the topic of sustainability.

Rozītis, Juris. "Displaced Literature : Images of Time and Space in Latvian Novels Depicting the First Years of the Latvian Postwar Exile." Doctoral thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för baltiska språk, finska och tyska, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-607.

Abstract:
In the years immediately following the Second World War, the main part of Latvian literature was produced by writers living outside Latvia. To this day Latvian literature continues to be written outside Latvia, albeit to a much smaller extent. This study examines those Latvian novels, written outside Latvia after the Second World War, which depict the realities of the early years of exile. The aim of the study is to describe the image of the world of exile as depicted in these novels. Borrowing from Bakhtin's concept of the chronotope, images relating to time and space in these novels are examined in order to discern a mental topography of exile common to all these novels - a chronotope of exile. The novels are read as part of a collective narrative, produced by a particular social group in unordinary historical circumstances. The novels are regarded as this social group’s common perception of its own experience of this historical reality. The early years of exile fall into two distinct periods: first, the period of flight from Latvia and life in and around the Displaced Persons camps of postwar Germany; second, the early years of settling in a new country of residence after emigration from Germany. A model of the perceived world is constructed in order to compare these two periods, as well as their divergence from a standard perception of oneself in the world. This model consists of various time-spaces radiating concentrically out from the individual – ranging from the physically and psychologically near-lying time-spaces of one’s personal and intimate life, through everyday social time-spaces, as well as formal societal time-spaces, to the more distant abstract and conceptual perceptions of one’s place in the universe. Basic human concepts such as home, family, work, intimate relationships, social administration, and most notably the homeland – Latvia – are plotted at various points within these models. Divergences between the models describing the perception of time and space in the two early periods of exile thus become apparent.

Gallagher, Kerrie Louise. "An Intervention Approach to Target Vocabulary Development in Te Reo Maori in Maori Immersion Settings." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Communication Disorders, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1879.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a storybook retell technique to facilitate vocabulary acquisition in children educated in Māori immersion class settings. A second aim of the study was to explore the cultural responsiveness and pedagogical appropriateness of the intervention approach and the importance of relationship building (whakawhanaungatanga) to successful interventions. Nine children participated in the study. These children (aged between 5 and 8 years) were recruited from two Kura Kaupapa Māori settings in differing urban areas in New Zealand. The children entered the study on a rolling basis in groups of three. The first three participants to enter the study were recruited from the one classroom on the basis of their demonstrating specific language impairment (SLI). The second group of three participants attended a different classroom and these participants were recruited into the study as a result of identified delayed reading development (RD). The third group of three participants from a third classroom was selected as the participants exhibited typical spoken and written language development (TD). The intervention technique utilized in this study adopted a structured approach to teaching the meaning of pre selected vocabulary items that were embedded in class story books. Three different books were selected and each book was read by the teacher to the whole class three times during a one week period. The target vocabulary was highlighted each time it occurred in the story through the following techniques: an adult definition was given for the word, an antonym or synonym was given, and the meaning was acted out by the teacher or the picture detailing the meaning of the word in the book was highlighted. A single subject research design using pre-intervention, intervention and post intervention assessment probes for the target vocabulary items was employed to examine the effectiveness of the intervention in teaching the children the targeted vocabulary. Teacher interviews were also carried out to assess the appropriateness of the intervention in relation to the philosophy of the Kura Kaupapa and its pedagogical appropriateness and cultural responsiveness. The results suggested that the children in all three groups (SLI, RD and TD) made moderate gains in the acquisition of the target vocabulary supporting the hypothesis that targeting vocabulary in story book retelling at a whole class level will lead to acquisition of the vocabulary by the participants' exposed to the intervention. However, using a Two Standard Deviation method to evaluate the significance of each participant's change, the gains made for the RD and SLI participants were not significant. The TD participants did demonstrate a significant difference in the number of words correct. The teachers of the participants involved in the study reported positively on the effectiveness and appropriateness of the intervention for inclusion within the Kura Kaupapa and classroom programme. In particular, teachers' reported that as the intervention included each child in the class (as opposed to a withdrawal intervention model) the intervention was more appropriate for the philosophy of the Kura Kaupapa. The teachers' also reported the effectiveness of the intervention for the development of collaboration and relationship building between the teacher and researcher (a speech-language therapist. The data showed that the intervention investigated in this study was culturally responsive and pedagogically appropriate. It could be included as a component of the class programme as it was responsive to the philosophy of the Kura Kaupapa. The participants' did make moderate gains in the acquisition of the vocabulary (although not at a level to be considered significant for children with delayed development). Further research is necessary to explore the effectiveness of what may potentially be a useful intervention to enhance vocabulary development for children in Kura Kaupapa.

Abstract:
Alan Berg's two musical settings of Theodor Storm's poem"Schliesse mir die Augen beide" have received little in the way of scholarly analytical attention. The three major chapters of this thesis deal with the two settings on three different levels. Chapter II surveys the political and cultural milieu in which Berg functioned as a young composer of Lieder in the years 1900-1910. Chapter III examines the special quality of lyricism which is often attributed to Berg and his works. Chapter IV provides more definitive and complete musical analyses of the two settings than have heretofore been available. The question of what role songwriting played in the development of Berg's compositional process is addressed in the conclusion.

Sassatelli, Elizabeth Hamilton. "Riding out the storm| A grounded theory study of Dementia caregiver grief and bereavement following family member death in long-term care settings." Thesis, Rush University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10753742.

Full text
Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the grief/bereavement process of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) caregivers following death of a family member in long-term care (LTC) and develop a theoretical model of this phenomenon based upon in-depth individual interviews. There is limited evidence examining ADRD caregiver grief and bereavement following family member death in LTC settings. Grounded Theory methodology has not been utilized to explore this phenomenon.

Background: ADRD is estimated to be the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Most individuals with ADRD die in LTC settings, where grief and bereavement support to surviving family members is virtually non-existent. Twenty-percent of these caregivers experience prolonged and/or exaggerated grief reactions that may impair their physical/mental health.

Method: A Grounded Theory design was used in this study. Participants were caregivers of a family member with ADRD who died in a LTC setting, recruited via Internet-based websites and caregiver forums. The interview guide explored recall of end-of-life grief and bereavement and the impact of LTC placement. Audio-taped individual interviews were conducted via Internet-based video-conferencing or telephone. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and entered into DeDoose© (qualitative data management software). Grounded theory methods were used to analyze data, formulate theoretical assumptions, and develop a theoretical model. Constant comparative analysis was used to interpret the findings and determine data saturation. Rigor was ensured through peer debriefing, audit trails, and expert reviews of the proposed model.

Results: Participants included adult children/grandchildren (n=16) and spouse (n=1) ranging in age from 30 to 77 years (M=56.94, SD=5.36). The mean time between death and the interview was 2.98 years (SD=2.22). The emerging model identified is comprised of 3 interdependent components of bereavement (behavioral, cognitive, and emotional). The following factors related to LTC placement were identified as facilitators or barriers to caregiver grief/bereavement: relationships/support with staff, death rituals, end-of-life care (hospice, end-of-life suffering), frequent deaths of other LTC residents, staffing-shortages, and length of time in LTC.

Conclusions: Findings from this study can be used to develop bereavement interventions for ADRD caregivers whose family members die in LTC.

Abstract:
This thesis will focus on stone ship settings and the burial practice surrounding them. Over 400 stone ships have been found in Gotland but only 70 of them have been studied and even less osteological analyses have been made. The burials in focus will be four ships which are all made of pieces of limestone formed like ships and are located under the surface opposed to the other types of stone ships settings that are made of big raised rocks. The ships in question are graves therefore the study will focus on the monuments as burial places and will seek so see similarities and differences in the outer and inner burial practice. By analyzing cremated bones, I will determine the age, sex and the number of individuals buried and with the help of the artefacts find possible patterns that can help determine the inner burial practice.

Abstract:
This study presents the development of the psychological practice within the institutional context. It is the psychotherapeutic group intervention with the children\'s caregivers in institutional shelters, for two years, developed within the context of the shelters. In our previous study for the Master\'s Degree, we identify intense psychic suffering manifested by the team of caregivers, in which we perceive important identifications between the team and the state of anguish the sheltered children are found. In March, 2006, we begin weekly psychotherapeutic gatherings with the caregivers of this shelter, until up the year 2008. Within the group, and at the beginning and the end of each gathering, we apply the Drawing- And-Story Procedure with Theme, to understand the psychic dynamics of the participants in relation with the sheltered children, and also, to help us evaluate the applied intervention. We adopt the Winnicottian Perspective for the notion of health. The experiment reveals, from the very moment the caregivers reach a better emotional contact, with the interiority, that they are able to hold back a great part of the psychic suffering, taking a more lively approach in contacting the exterior reality, expanding the affective contacts. The team of caregivers presents a better contact with their own affections; also, presents improvement in the capacity to discriminate the children under the shelter, which facilitates the relationship in the institutional context. We perceive a change in the subjective reality of the team of caregivers, even though the social reality of the context remains unchanged, and this allows us to consider the efficiency of the psychological intervention with the team of caregivers. Thus, we propose this intervention as differentiated clinical setting to aid caregivers in shelters

Brooke, Sarah. "Giving flight to the Imagination : using portraiture to tell the story of Orff Schulwerk and a family music education setting." Thesis, 2016. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/35778/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Orff Schulwerk approach to music and movement education actively seeks to provide flight to the imagination through a playful, inclusive, engaging, creative and artistic pedagogy. As an approach to classroom music education it focuses on participatory music making in groups encompassing the social and emotional needs of the student. Orff educators interpret the Schulwerk in different ways, and as a non-prescriptive approach to music and movement education, this is to be welcomed. However, this freedom in interpretation has led to a variety of beliefs and practices, some of which bear little resemblance to how the Schulwerk was envisaged by its creators, Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman. What seems to be lacking within much of the Orff community is a framework of philosophical understandings in which our practices can be placed. Reflecting on whether my own understandings of Orff Schulwerk lacked legitimacy prompted me to interrogate and consider my own practice, and investigate the philosophy of Orff Schulwerk. This investigation is presented in Part 1 of this thesis and I propose seven principles of Orff Schulwerk as a framework for understanding the overarching philosophy. I suggest that adopting such a framework allows for the creative freedom Orff educators enjoy whilst maintaining the integrity of the approach. In Part 2 of this thesis I tell the story of a research project I conducted with primary school children and their families. Volunteers participated in a project led by me as the teacher learning music together through the Orff Schulwerk approach. As the educator/researcher of this project, the methodology of portraiture is well suited as a frame(work) for my research. It promotes a narrative writing style and makes visible the personhood of the researcher and the humanness of the participants. Portraiture supports the significant reflective component. Findings from the research project demonstrate beneficial outcomes in families learning music together through the pedagogy of Orff Schulwerk. These families reported positive experiences from their involvement in the program: musically, socially and personally.

Abstract:
This study utilized content analysis of newspaper articles in the month following Hurricane Ike's landfall to evaluate the presence of agenda setting and framing. Three national newspapers were analyzed to determine the existence and order of news frames. The results indicate that Semetko and Valkenburg's (2000) news frames changed in order of importance in this study. The order of news frames varied among the three national newspapers. The newspaper with mostly human interest frames was determined to be more sensational than the other two, more serious newspapers with predominantly responsibility frames. This study then compared the five ordered frames to previous framing research on Hurricane Katrina. The two hurricanes differed greatly in amount of news coverage and varied slightly in the order of the news frames. An evaluation of news coverage of major U.S. events occurring in the month after Hurricane Ike was conducted, with results indicating that news attention of the hurricane was hindered by other major national events.

Store signboards are an important part of city landscape. When people go shopping, they would first find the store by looking at store signboards on the street. So very eye-catching and highly attractive store signboards can significantly influence store choices. Therefore, visual design of store signboards is an important aspect of advertisement nowadays. In this context, the study explores the effects of different fonts, colors and graphic styles on the degree of attractiveness and visibility of store signboards with virtual reality technology. Each of these the factors (font, color and graphic style) has multiple levels in this study. It would be a time-consuming and expensive effort to develop all models with different combinations of fonts, colors and graphic styles and perform experiment accordingly. Taguchi methods are a technique developed by Dr. Taguchi for experiment design. Such methods are designed to perform experiments for quality optimization with fewer experiments and less cost and time. In this study, Taguchi methods were used to measure the effects of the three factors (font, color and graphic style) onvisibility of store signboards. Questionnaires were distributed to experiment participants and the results were analyzed in order to put forward a design solution for consumers’ information and store signboard designers’reference in regard to visual design. The study aimed to 1)compare experiment results of the settings of TV-watching and virtual reality, which indicate that virtual reality setting gave experiment participants more genuine feeling of the real world and helped them better get informed, 2)assess the effects of font, color and graphic style on viewer’s satisfaction of the design of store signboards anduseTaguchi methods to present findings, 3) conduct quantitative analysison experiment results, come to a conclusion based on findings of the study and provide suggestions for future studies.

The concept of green marketing has been growing and promoting in recent years. Particularly, the Environmental Protection Administration has set auditing standards and enforcement procedures for green stores in hopes that all vendors may actively cooperate with and become green stores, enabling consumers to quickly and accurately to choose the green stores which can meet the standards of green marketing. Consequently, green stores can reduce environmental load, and thus achieve the goal of green consumption. In this study, questionnaires are used to survey and document analysis method is applied to collect relevant information as the evidence of research. The collected questionnaires are used to make information analysis, including descriptive statistics, reliability and validity, T-test, ANOVA and correlation analysis, and others to analyze the influences on Consumer Purchase Behavior in Green Store settings. Furthermore, proposals are given to serve references for the practitioners or for the government in Taiwan. The findings have shown that there are no remarkable differences on the cognition of various consumers' settings over green stores. The cognition of consumers toward green stores produces tremendous influence on their purchasing behaviors.

This paper deals with the relevant problems of performance management of a hairdressing chain store system in Taiwan. Two important topics are addressed, which contain: (1) systematically allocating input resources and setting output targets for the stores simultaneously to maximize the overall efficiency; (2) allocating fixed or shared cost to all stores and distributing common revenue among stores in an equitable and rational way. Since the previous topics closely relate to relative efficiency, the efficiency-orientated approaches based on data envelopment analysis (DEA) are proposed to effectively deal with the topics. Four input factors (including service manpower, number of hairdressing facility, operating expense and trade area type) and one output factor (monetary amount of revenue) are adopted in the proposed DEA model for dealing with topic one. While in dealing with topic two, the allocated shared cost and common revenue are used as input factor 5 and output factor two, respectively. The research results of this paper can enhance the performance management effectiveness of the chain store system. The proposed approaches can be modified and then applied to the service industries possessed of similar characteristics.
