Steffel, Jennifer Elaine. "Storming the suburban fortress : understanding the NIMBY phenomenon." Thesis, McGill University, 1995. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=23704.

Abstract:
The ubiquitous settlement pattern of the American suburb is in fact a carefully constructed reality. Because the vision of the home in the suburbs is very deeply rooted, any development which is considered threatening to this image is met with a defensive reaction. Too often, however, when these NIMBY ("Not In My Back Yard") sentiments are permitted to dictate what is acceptable in a community, housing affordable to low- and moderate-income households is purposely excluded.
This thesis explores the processes by which discriminatory NIMBY sentiments are realized as legal development regulations in contemporary suburbs. The historic evolution of the suburbs and the psychological foundations behind their typical characteristics are presented as the sources of a suburban value structure which esteems NIMBY. Suburban governments are mandated to represent their constituents' values, but exclusionary development controls are a complex product of constituent demands, fiscal constraints, and constitutional limits.
This analysis reveals that legislative responsibility often bows to political weakness. NIMBY groups use political pressure to manipulate municipal governments into using their vast discretionary powers over development as a weapon for exclusion. In response to either political or fiscal motivations, legislators pressure planners to validate discriminatory legislative agendas with their plans, thus undermining their abilities to guide growth effectively. Although the process of development regulation is well-grounded in historic and legal precedents, when legislation is used for discriminatory ends, citizens' civil and property rights are jeopardized. This thesis explains how regulations such as zoning ordinances can be used for exclusion when municipal government disregards its mandate to be the guardian of the general welfare.
Increased awareness of both the motivations and the manifestations of the NIMBY phenomenon may enable individuals as well as lawmakers to create a more equitable suburbia.

Assennato, Marco. "Une Marseillaise sans Bastille à prendre : Manfredo Tafuri enquête par la philosophie." Thesis, Paris Est, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PESC1019/document.

Abstract:
Certain aspects of Manfredo Tafuri's work have been recently reexamined by the academic community. However, the redraft of his ideas has likely generated both several misunderstandings and misconceptions. His theoretical approach is one of the main keys to interpret his work: the issue of any architectural process is the complexity of the process itself. The theoretical issues of an architectural project relates to Tafuri’s argument regarding the basic constraints that we could find in the philosophical debate about modernity, techniques, languages, freedom and the constraints on subjective action. Tafuri tracks an extraordinarily rich cartography of architecture and a cultural and political pathway that connects a wide critical thinking sphere of the Italian intelligentsia between the 1960s and 1980s

Moss, John. "Storming the Castle: Non-Secular Subversion of the Pas D'Armes in The Castle of Perseverance." VCU Scholars Compass, 2008. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1600.

Full text
Abstract:
It is important to remember that the categories of medieval performance were established far removed from their period in history. As a genre, the morality play includes a wide diversity of time, geography, content and performance styles. Such disparities have made it difficult to develop a comprehensive definition, without which comparisons between works cannot be consistent. As scholarship continues to explore these works in context of their performance, it becomes increasingly important to identify which performance styles best inform their production. In examining The Castle of Perseverance within the parameters of pas d’armes, new meanings can be drawn from its text. Instead of simply incorporating the conventions of tournament staging, the play exposes the faults of the secular societies they were intended to promote. Currently it is impossible to determine definitely that The Castle of Perseverance was intended to be a subversion of the pas d’armes. There is no identified author or even record of a single performance in medieval times. Yet the circumstantial evidence within the text supports the theory of subversion. Further research is still needed on the performance of The Castle of Perseverance within the appropriate historical context in order to better understand its place within the larger canon of medieval drama.

Cleveland, Clayton. "Storming the Security Council: The Revolution in UNSC Authority Over the Projection of Military Force." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12971.

Full text
Abstract:
Why have states requested international authorization for their projections of military force more after 1989? One perspective suggests powerful states should not make such requests. Rather, they should look to their own power instead of international organizations. Another view suggests international authorization is a way to provide credible signals about state intentions. A third perspective suggests states view international authorization of military force as appropriate. I establish that states have changed their behavior, requesting international authorization more often after 1989. Then, I develop hypotheses involving material power, burden-sharing, informational signaling, and international norms. I assess their ability to explain the increase in authorization requests through evidence from over 150 military force projections by a wide range of states and through a detailed evaluation of United States behavior. The U.S. provides a strong test case for the theories evaluated, since powerful states should be least susceptible to pressures for requesting authorization, and yet it does so more frequently after 1989. I find the expectation that states should request international authorization emerged after the U.S. set a precedent during the Persian Gulf War. The end of the Cold War changed the perceived "viability" of different strategies for projecting military force for U.S. policy-makers. Requesting authorization from the UN became a plausible alternative. The decision to request international authorization--and the justifications U.S. decision makers offered for doing so--led to the expectation by other states that the U.S. would do so for future projections of military force. This international norm helps explain the politics of international authorization for the airstrikes on Iraq (1998), the Iraq War (2003) and the Libyan intervention (2011). The response of other countries to the Clinton Administration's failure to request authorization for airstrikes on Iraq in 1998 demonstrates that expectations regarding whether the U.S. should request authorization had shifted. The subsequent consolidation of the norm helps explain the requests for authorization by the Bush Administration for the Iraq War in 2003 and by the Obama Administration for Libya in 2011. The dissertation increases our understanding of the relationship, and the role of authority, between states and international organizations.

Abstract:
This thesis aim was to design a new form of playful interaction engaging dreaming and awake players. In the tested concept, “Wakers” were able to influence and interact with the dreams of “Dreamers” (with the help of BCI to detect their brainwaves, emotional states and REM phases) by applying external stimuli on the dreamer (somatosensory stimulation, specifically vibrations). In the concept, the dreamer was wearing “the stimuli pajamas”, which vibrated in different ways every time the waker would poke, stroke, shake “the ball”, a prototype displaying the emotional states, sleep stages and movements of the dreamer. Each time the waker would interact with the ball, feedback would be transmitted to the vibrating pajamas, thus influencing the dream and state of the dreamer, which would then be transmitted back and displayed on the ball. A new playful experience was created using sleep as a necessary component. The research was experiment-driven (with body-storming and lo-fi prototyping), and revealed touch to be a powerful and underexplored way to influence dreams. Furthermore, transmitting the emotional states of the dreamer to “the ball” helped render the abstract notion of someone else’s sleep tangible to the waker. The co-creation session organized revealed that the particular concept developed in the context of sleep was tied to interesting notions, such as bringing forward the relationships between the players, the unbalanced power relations, sensual play, abusive play and more. The concept sketches explored the design space around the main concept and shaped some of these different scenarios. All these contributions are aimed to be inspirational material for further research in the field.

Kappenstein, Reinhild. "Décor et mise en scène actuels de l'opéra : décor et mise en scène d'un opéra romantique, à l'exemple de Samson et Dalila de Saint-Sae͏̈ns, monté par Pier Luigi Pizzi le 24.5.1991 à l'Opéra Bastille." Paris 1, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996PA010658.

Full text
Abstract:
The opera "Samson et Dalila" by Camille Saint-Saëns produced on stage by Pier Luigi Pizzi at the opera "Bastille" in 1991 served as an example for pointing out the link which exists between art history and opera. Pizzi, who is both stage designer and producer, offers an excellent example for this kind of study: his stage representations mainly turn toward the fine arts and especially toward painting. The subject of his stage design is the topic of our research. We tried therefore to determine the cultural references (fine arts, music, literature, film, etc. ) Which have been our could have been used for the stage design. Our choices, often personal, still are open to the free imagination of the reader, which may be explained by the fact that the stage design by itself is supposed to stimulate an imaginative response in the spectator. The stage design presents a composition of opera as a whole and also its part in crossing over between romantic and contemporary esthetics. Especially the esthetics of singing was linked to the idea of the "soul" and the "mind" in the romantic period. Today the "body" itself represents the means of expression. How now to render "soul" and "body" according to stage design ? How to translate and to define them in the context of stage representation, as well as in other institutions of art ? These questions lead to an analysis of the identity of the parisian opera houses such as the "national opera of paris" (the stage setting of "Samson et Dalila" by Pizzi widely referred to them), their relationships among themselves, and their position among art institutions in general

Delarc, Morgane. "Une immersion dans le projet "Réinventons nos places" à Paris (Places des Fêtes, de la Nation et de la Bastille) : une analyse de situations de travail et de productions de connaissances au sein des services de la Ville de Paris." Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to observe the evolution of the specific knowledge and practices of the City of Paris’ technical services and this, through the example of an ambitious Parisian urban development project called “Réinventons nos places”. The study focuses on the professional activities performed in the development of three public squares (Place des Fêtes, Place de la Nation, and Place de la Bastille), with the purpose to see how the specialists adapted themselves to the various challenges offered by the City council (for instance, to take into account : the Gender in the development of a public space, digital objects, innovation in project management and in the way of managing space)... To examine this process “in a work situation” will lead us, for example, to describe the way these specialists will assimilate new knowledge and know-how in this particular context. Ultimately, the City Council, when progressively adapting the work and the work organization of the various actors, as well as the project goawls themselves, seems to be aiming at the creation of a “new model”, a new way of developing public spaces. We are going to examine the first step within this new way, in which engineers and architects have to reconsider their habits in order to meet new demands – they do this, notably, by making still unknown objects and by fitting them into both a specific area and a background they know well : Paris’ public spaces

Abstract:

Abstract:
From 1838 until the end of the European Revolutions in 1852, the French Revolution provided Chartists with a repertoire of symbolism that Chartists would deploy in their activism, histories, and literature to foster a sense of collective consciousness, define a democratic world-view, and encourage internationalist sentiment. Challenging conservative notions of the revolution as a bloody and anarchic affair, Chartists constructed histories of 1789 that posed the era as a romantic struggle for freedom and nationhood analogous to their own, and one that was deeply entwined with British history and national identity. During the 1830s, Chartist opposition to the New Poor Law drew from the gothic repertoire of the Bastille to frame inequality in Britain. The workhouse 'bastile' was not viewed simply as an illegitimate imposition upon Britain, but came to symbolise the character of class rule. Meanwhile, Chartist newspapers also printed fictions based on the French Revolution, inserting Chartist concerns into the narratives, and their histories of 1789 stressed the similarity between France on the eve of revolution and Britain on the eve of the Charter. During the 1840s Chartist internationalism was contextualised by a framework of thinking about international politics constructed around the Revolutions of 1789 and 1830, while the convulsions of Continental Europe during 1848 were interpreted as both a confirmation of Chartist historical discourse and as the opening of a new era of international struggle. In the Democratic Review (1849-1850), the Red Republican (1850), and The Friend of the People (1850-1852), Chartists like George Julian Harney, Helen Macfarlane, William James Linton, and Gerald Massey, along with leading figures of the radical émigrés of 1848, characterised 'democracy' as a spirit of action and a system of belief. For them, the democratic heritage was populated by a diverse array of figures, including the Apostles of Jesus, Martin Luther, the romantic poets, and the Jacobins of 1793. The 'Red Republicanism' that flourished during 1848-1852 was sustained by the historical viewpoints arrived at during the Chartist period generally. Attempts to define a 'science' of socialism was as much about correcting the misadventures of past ages as it was a means to realise the promise announced by the 'Springtime of the Peoples'.

Abstract:
This dissertation follows the historians of left politics in Bangladesh, a country that went through a century of independence and reversal under three signs–British India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. While the country kept reimagining itself under new identities, the idea of communism was underground and persecuted in all three periods, although the forms of struggle and the shape of ideas kept changing. This research is an ethnography of forms of writing history, the purchase of the celebration or censure of the work, and new socialities and rearranged hierarchies that emerge from this process. For a small but significant group of journalists, publishers, activists, and survivors, the project of arguing, understanding, documenting, writing down, and reenacting particular moments of Bangladesh history is a vital and presentist task.

Full text
Abstract:
The Britannia Beach area has been affected by historical mining activity with deposits of mine waste (mostly waste rock and concentrated ore) at various locations. The area is characterized by steep slopes draining onto a flat alluvial fan, bisected by Britannia Creek. The mine is located in the temperate rainforest region of B.C., and significant volumes of stormwater run-off are generated in the wet months (October through April). Where surface water runs off mine wastes, the water quality is adversely affected (low pH and increased metal concentrations), and this water ultimately discharges to Howe Sound. A study of the existing surface water drainage system was initiated in 2006 with the objective of characterizing the metal flux discharging to Howe Sound via Britannia Beach storm drains. The purpose of the study was to identify ways to reduce this flux. This paper describes the field program and instrumentation used to collect flow and water quality data, and outlines different mitigation measures that could improve the stormwater discharge quality to Howe Sound. Such measures include separation of uncontaminated stormwater from contaminated run-off, rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, integration with the existing mine water treatment facility and lime addition.

The objective of this research is to develop a Web-based collaborative tool for learning creativity. This research describes a game-based system, Idea Storming Cube, in support of creative thinking. It aims to make people form a creative and Perspective-Modifying thinking habit. Based on theories of this kind support system and prior studies, we propose to integrate exciting game environment and intelligent support mechanism into the creativity thinking support system. The system acquires knowledge from domain expert, user inputs history, and individuals of a brainstorming group, and then provides user-, goal- and context-sensitive supports. Compared to classic tutoring systems, it focuses more on stimulating divergent thinking. The system can be utilized with two distinct support strategies, Basic Mode and Agent-Assist Mode, in order to support different learning objectives. One focus on knowledge learning, the other highlights the divergent thinking ability. The proposed Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) tool for collaborative idea generation has been implemented, and two experiments for preliminary evaluation of the system are also reported in this thesis. The major results of this study show that the game-based brainstorming system with appropriate intelligent support outperforms the other types of systems because the game competition environment can make them concentrate on the brainstorming tasks and let them think more from different view points for learning the knowledge with the support of the peer-like agent.

Clean Architecture has become a popular software architecture in recent years because of its independence from the framework, user interface, database and external programs, and its ease of testing. In Clean Architecture, the entities layer and the use case layer are the core of the whole architecture. However, in Clean Architecture, there is not much explanation on how to disassemble the problem domain into domain models and use cases. Based on Morris’s thesis, this thesis first discusses the problems encountered in the kanban system, ezKanban, which uses the object-oriented analysis and design method to implement Clean Architecture. The dependence of domain objects is too complicated, and how to maintain the invariants represented by domain objects, persistence interface grain size design of domain models, output interface and grain size design of use cases. We further propose to solve the above problems by using event storming, domain event pattern, aggregate pattern and repository pattern commonly used in the domain-driven design field. The research results show that the domain model established by object-oriented analysis and design, combined with the method proposed in this thesis, can simplify the implementation of Clean Architecture and avoid the problems that may be caused by the object-oriented analysis and design.

The Mixed Reality technology trend has undergone recently, the way human interacting with information is transferring 2D interface into 3D environment. Likewise, the method that the design team members generate the concept has to be changed as well. Because of the user input and other operation of Mixed Reality have a significant correlation with the physical environment, using current method like brainstorming, the design team may hardly envisage the multilevel interactive operation details in the physical environment. This study shows that both the embodied storming and Mixed Reality emphasize the interaction between the user and physical environment. Therefore, we proposed a core hypothesis that the embodied storming method can effects on team concept generation in the Mixed Reality design process. Our major research question is to find the differences in the design activity between embodied storming and brainstorming. The aim of our study is to discuss how the embodied storming method effects on team concept generation in the Mixed Reality design process. Through the setting of experimentation to show the correlations between the embodied storming method and the Mixed Reality concept design process, and focused on the analysis of what does this method impact on the scenario and the interaction details of concept. We conducted two design teams by the control experiment method, which develop the same design subject within the time and recorded the discussion in the process on video. The experiment is divided into two teams, which is named as team E and team B. As for the team E, conducting the embodied storming method with transparent sheet-prototyping. In team B, using the brainstorming as well as scenario design approach with sticky note. With protocol analysis, results showed first, the thinking logic of embodied storming is commenced from the layout of virtual information performed by body language, associated with interaction and operation, subsequently to develop the concept of scenario; second, we compare the descriptions of discussing with two teams, the quantity of narrative included physical and digital interactions indicated that team E is larger than team B; and third, according to the analysis and interview results, the embodied storming method can help communicate and understand the idea between each other. On the one hand, the experiment confirmed that the team B hardly envisage the multilevel interactive operation details. The concept generated from team B merely presented with the visual form, with rarely the narrative of physical and digital interactions. To conclude, the embodied storming showed that this method can have a great effect on Mixed Reality concept design process. Additionally, the design activity had obvious difference between team E and team B. Furthermore, we suggest that the design team can use embodied storming method and brainstorming method by turns to come up with more potential forms of interaction in detail. This effective method can make the design team more vivid in the Mixed Reality concept generation process.

Abstract:
The place of patina, or weathering, in the architecture of the Enlightenment has been somehow neglected by historians of architecture. This study aims at showing that patina became an important issue of architecture in England and France during the second half of the eighteenth century. First, this thesis looks at the patina of painting and sculpture, which was already a topic of interest in the artistic world. The patina of architecture only grew in importance during the eighteenth century. It was then that it became more and more present in architectural representations, especially in the numerous views of Antique ruins. Patina also became increasingly popular and discussed among garden architects and theoreticians, who appreciated its contribution to landscape harmony. At the same time, the theoreticians of the Picturesque mentioned patina as a central characteristic of rustic and vernacular architecture. While patina was adopted in the garden and incorporated into the aesthetics of the Picturesque, it did not raise the same enthusiasm in the city. On the contrary, at a time of hygiene reform, patina was considered filthy and seen as a symptom of contamination. As a result, weathered and dirty surfaces were frenetically cleaned and whitewashed. Architects were no longer ready to accept the forming of patina on their work. Such a reaction was no surprise since classical architecture had always considered as its task to conceive an abstract idea of a building. The physical relation of architecture to its environment was not an important concern, and it was left to technical innovation to guarantee immutability. Finally, patina also raises the question of time in architecture. Resistance to patina occurred in places where relation to time was problematic. Such was the case in eighteenth-century European culture.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of “Award-giving” and “Brain-storming” teaching methods on math learning attitude, achievement, and problem-solving ability of first-grade junior high school students. The researcher adopted “Award-giving” and “Brain-storming” methods in teaching math which assists students learn from game-playing activities. The sample included two first-grade junior high school classes, one as experimental group, and the other as control group. There were 35 students in the experimental group which was given “Brain-storming” and “Award-giving” teaching methods. There were 35 students as well in the control group which was given traditional teaching method. The instruments developed and used in the study were (1) the Test of Learning Attitude in Math Learning that includes confidence, interest and belief sub-instruments, (2) the Tests of Math Learning Achievement [1] and [2] , (3) the Tests of Problem-Solving [1] and [2] that include realizing problem, defining problem, identifying factor, providing information and deciding strategy sub-instruments, (4) the Questionnaire of Problem-Solving Ability. Statistical methods were utilized to test their significance. There is no significant difference on achievement tests, belief of learning math, defining problem and deciding strategy. The results suggest that the experimental group has significant difference on total attitude, confidence, interest of learning and total problem-solving ability, realizing problem, identifying factors and providing information. It indicates that the style of “Brain-storming” and “Award-giving” teaching strategies can improve student’s problem-solving ability. In summary, the teaching style of “Brain-storming” and “Award-giving” is recommended to teach junior high school math. Suggestions for teaching and further study were made at the end of this thesis.
