Ringuet, Stephanie. "Biogeochemical impacts of storm runoff on water quality in Southern Kaneohe Bay, Hawai'i." Thesis, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/7044.

Full text
Abstract:
Fluvial impacts on water quality and ecosystem structure were evaluated in southern Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii. Fluvial inputs occurred as small, steady baseflow interrupted by intense pulses of storm runoff. Baseflow impacted only restricted areas around stream mouths, but the five storm events sampled during this study produced transient runoff plumes of much greater spatial extent. Nutrient loading via runoff generally led to an increase of the phytoplankton biomass and gross productivity in southern Kaneohe Bay, but the rapid depletion of nutrients resulted in a fast decline of the algal population for all storm events considered in this study. Because of variability in export and mixing rates of runoff nutrients, the magnitude of the phytoplankton response was not proportional to nutrient loading. Under baseline conditions, water-column productivity in southern Kaneohe Bay is normally nitrogen-limited. However, following storm events, the high dissolved inorganic nitrogen to dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIN:DIP) of runoff nutrients drive South Bay waters towards phosphorus-limitation. A depletion of phosphate (PO43-) relative to nitrate (NO3-) in surface waters was observed following all storm events. Due to high flushing rates, recovery times of bay waters from storm perturbations ranged from three to eight days and appeared to be correlated with tidal range. Storm inputs can thus have significant impacts on the water column ecosystem and biogeochemistry in southern Kaneohe Bay, but the perturbations are only transient events.

Abstract:
We shall investigate the use of Swahili slang in Freddy Macha`s tiny collection of short stories Twen `zetu Ulaya (DSM 1984), and especially in his short story Check-bob This is arguably the only epistolary short story in modern Swahili literature; in fact, epistolary novels are uncommon in anglophone Afiica as a whole. In this narrative two former lovers show abuses on each other and their four letters - two by each character - unfold the story of a selfish young woman who shamelessly exploited her boyfiiend and the manner in which he paid her back with her own coin. It is interesting to note how the same events are presented from two different perspectives and hence evaluated differently.

Smith, Veronica Rose. "Future relics : the rise and fall of the Big Box store." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/4757.

Full text
Abstract:
Future architectural relics are everywhere, manifest in the ultimately unsustainable patterns many American communities have replicated - endless weed-infested parking lots, decrepit malls, the abandoned Walmart glowering across the street at the even bigger Super Walmart. Gone are many of the small, independently owned businesses that lined main streets in small and medium-sized communities across the country, rendered relics by shopping malls lauding big-name brands or cheap products. Malls, too, may be on their way to becoming relics, due in part to the Internet and The Great Recession. However, architectural relics in the form of big box stores have haunted the American landscape since 1964. These box-like, impossibly large structures continue to be built, only to stand empty several years later when an even larger store model is constructed. The country is facing a new obsolescence of extravagance. No longer can our floundering economy support an infinite boom of boxes. Every new big box is a future relic. While many architectural and cultural historians such as Richard Longstreth, David Smiley, and Neil Harris have dissected the relic of the American shopping mall, few have grappled with the ubiquity of the big box store and how this structural form has departed from a longstanding tradition of retail architectural design. In this thesis, I analyze the factors have contributed to the rise and fall of these creaking behemoths of retail architecture. Ultimately, I contend that big box stores mark a stark departure in architectural theory and practice, and that this departure has manifested in a multitude of cultural, economic, and environmental consequences.

Full text
Abstract:
Tunnels, culverts, and subway stations are the main parts of an integrated infrastructure system. Most of them are constructed by the cut-and-cover method at shallow depths (mainly lower than 30 m) of soil deposits, where large-scale seismic ground deformation can occur with lower stiffness and strength of the soil. Therefore, the transverse racking deformation (one of the major seismic ground deformation) due to soil shear deformations should be included in the seismic design of underground structures using cost- and time-efficient methods that can achieve robustness of design and are easily understood by engineers. This paper aims to develop a simplified but comprehensive approach relating to vulnerability assessment in the form of fragility curves on a shallow two-story reinforced concrete underground box structure constructed in a highly-weathered soil. In addition, a comparison of the results of earthquakes per peak ground acceleration (PGA) is conducted to determine the effective and appropriate number for cost- and time-benefit analysis. The ground response acceleration method for buried structures (GRAMBS) is used to analyze the behavior of the structure subjected to transverse seismic loading under quasi-static conditions. Furthermore, the damage states that indicate the exceedance level of the structural strength capacity are described by the results of nonlinear static analyses (or so-called pushover analyses). The Latin hypercube sampling technique is employed to consider the uncertainties associated with the material properties and concrete cover owing to the variation in construction conditions. Finally, a large number of artificial ground shakings satisfying the design spectrum are generated in order to develop the seismic fragility curves based on the defined damage states. It is worth noting that the number of ground motions per PGA, which is equal to or larger than 20, is a reasonable value to perform a structural analysis that produces satisfactory fragility curves.

Grime, David. "The effect of storms on chenier plains : the Shoal Bay chenier plain." Thesis, The University of Wollongong, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/281556.

Full text
Abstract:
The southern coast of Shoal Bay, near Darwin, Northern Territory is a small, well vegetated chenier plain. Chenier plains are prograded coastal mudflats that support a number of long narrow ridges formed from sand and shell debris, that run parallel to the coast. Mangrove communities on the mudflat occur in zones, also parallel to the coastline, indicating species preference for protection, depth and duration of tidal inundation and level of salinity. Chenier plains are thought to be formed through fluctuations in sediment supply resulting in, episodic coastal progradation, and coastal erosion and ridge deposition above the level of high tide. Some of the literature suggests that progradation may be aided by the seaward mangrove zones trapping sediments, while erosion of the mudflats and subsequent ridge formation can be attributed to high energy storm activity, such as that of a tropical cyclone. This study is involved with examining the recent history of the chenier plain at Shoal Bay, in regard to the effects of cyclone Tracy, which struck the area on December 25, 1974. The storm devastated large areas of the central mangrove zones, those of Bruguiera, Ceriops and Rhizophora, mostly by windthrow. The seaward mangrove zones, such as that of Avicennia, and the landforms were mostly unaffected by the storm winds, and the storm surge associated with the cyclone was relatively small, as it occurred in conjunction with a neap high tide. The overall effects of cyclone Tracy on the chenier plain were much less than those described for other storms in the literature. All of the changes that have occurred on the Shoal Bay chenier plain over the period examined can be explained by normal wave and tide action, and do not require a high energy event.

Abstract:
Problems concerning the body and its appearance are difficulties more common occurring among women historically, even though it is more and more frequent among men since the past 20-30 years. The purpose of this study was to enlighten and problematize how men perceive that body image influences their body-esteem. The sample of the study was biological born men, and those participating were 22-32 years old. The method used was a semi-structured interview, containing an interview guide and a body scale. The body scale was used as a tool to measure actual and ideal body of the participants. The interviews took place at the participant’s homes of in private rooms of one library. The results indicate that the male body is more than its function and esthetics; it is also a symbol of manhood and a significant part of one’s identity. What may impact on one’s body image and body esteem seems to be body ideals, the internalizations of these and others commentary of one’s own body appearance. The conclusion was that body image may influence self-esteem, self-confidence and the security of one’s identity. If one’s body correlates with the body ideals, the social constructions, the risk of a negative body image decreases.

Abstract:
We all have stories to share, to build, to pass around, to inherit, and to create. This story - the one I piece together now - is about a Thai-/Bengali-/Muslim-/American-/Feminist looking for home, looking to manage the tension and conflict of wanting to belong to her family and to her feminist community. This thesis focuses on the seemingly conflicting obligations to kinship on the one hand and to feminist practice on the other, a conflict where being a good scholar or activist is directly in opposition to being a good Asian daughter. In order to understand how and why these communities appear at odds with one another, I examine how the material spaces and psychological realities inhabited by specific hyphenated, fragmented subjects are represented (and misrepresented) in both popular culture and practical politics, arguing against images of the hybrid body that bracket its lived tensions. I argue that fantasies of home as an unconditional site of belonging and comfort distract us from the multiple communities to which hyphenated subjects must move between. Hyphenated Asian-/American bodies often find ourselves torn between nativism and assimilationism - having to neutralize, forsake, or discard parts of our identities. Thus, I reduce complicated, difficult ideas of being to the size of a thimble, to a question of loyalty between my Asian-/American history and my American-/feminist future, between my familial background and the issues that have become foregrounded for me during college, between the home from which I originate and the new home to which I wish to belong. To move with fluidity, I must - in collaboration with others - invent new stories of identity and belonging.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Tongass National Forest in southeast Alaska contains 2,176 square kilometers of karst. As part of the evolving Tongass Land Management Plan, research into the function of karst systems is crucial in understanding how forest management affects not only karst areas but also surrounding ecosystems. Dye trace and water balance results in two watersheds on the north end of Prince of Wales Island demonstrate the difficulty in containing the effects of management, as water can enter karst catchments from unknown sources at different flow regimes. A dye trace was conducted in Windgate and Canyon Block watersheds. Two sinking streams were traced to one resurgence spring in Canyon Block, and four sinking streams were traced to one resurgence spring in Windgate. Water balance data calculated for the entire study period and individual storm events suggests that Windgate has been sufficiently delineated. Data from the study period and storm event water balance calculations for Canyon Block suggest that at high flow discharge is pirated into Canyon Block from another system. High resolution monitoring in each catchment show that there is no significant delay between the increase in discharge and the arrival of direct runoff, as evidenced by the quick decrease in specific conductance. This could result in a quick transmission of sediment and contaminants through the karst system into downstream salmon habitat.

Abstract:
This study sought to examine how the prototypical male athletic form and the prototypical female athletic form are discursively constructed when a sports magazine has full control of what material to produce and publish. What makes up the ‘athletic form’ involves all the various traits and characteristics that are attached to the notion of what it means to be an athlete and what it means to have an athletic figure. The theoretical foundation was built on theories about gender in the media with a strong focus on objectification and (hyper)sexualisation, and previous research on gender in sports reporting has shown evidence of a strong gender bias where women athletes are both objectified and sexualised while women’s sports in general is portrayed as significantly less interesting and valuable compared to men’s sports. In order to study the discursive construction of the athletic form, the material – the 2017 edition of ESPN Magazine’s The Body Issue – was analysed through the method of Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis. While there were several features and traits that were universal to both genders, such as toughness and strength, there were also differences of significant importance. There was a distinct clash between the notion of being athletic and being feminine as athleticism was not deemed a feminine trait, and efforts were even made to show how the women athletes are still “normal women” despite being athletes. Plus, a male athlete’s body was depicted as being purely about function with its appearance not a matter of concern. A female athlete’s body, on the other hand, was likewise about function but large emphasis was also focused on the notion of attractiveness and beauty, and that women athletes are not only tough and strong but also beautiful. Overall, the construction of the female athletic form contained a sexual aura that was forever present.

This study consists of an analysis of the female character in a few short-stories from the books Il paradiso (1970) and Boh (1976) by the Italian writer Alberto Moravia (1907-1990), who conceived his work both in prose (short-stories, novellas and novels) as in plays and film scripts. Furthermore, another primary objective of the research was the complete translation of thirteen short stories from these books, inasmuch as there are no Brazilian Portuguese translations of this corpus. As theoretical bases, it was used Gérard Genette’s Discours du récit (2007), Lilia Crocenzi’s La donna nella narrativa A. Moravia (1964) and Antonio Candido’s A personagem de ficção (1987). It is essential to emphasize that in all the short-stories the female characters are homo-diegetic narrators (Genette, 1972). These books were chosen because their stories shed light on some key themes regarding Moravia’s poetics. For instance, most of stories contain thematic cores as the lassitude of the individual towards reality, the body seen as a product and an object of consumption, fetishism, social hypocrisy, sex, anger and angst. The protagonists strugle until the last moment trying to deal with the intricate situations of their lives. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, everything is reduced to a vision of an apathetic and disenchanted world. Through convencionalização (CANDIDO, 1987), Moravia could expose the neurotic psychology of his protagonists, portraying them as cynical and distant women. The simple structured language, nearly deprived of ornaments, also reflects this distance. It is believed, notwithstanding, that the oral tone, sometimes rather prominant in some of the short-stories can be understood as the elegiac confessions of these characters who enjoy the privileged position of homo-diegetic narrators who, through an internally focalized perspective (Genette, 1972), can fictionalize at will their stories. It is noteworthy that the use of this narrative technique provides the reader only with the narrator’s own point of view. Besides, it was also observed that Moravia transferred his intellectual thought to the female characters (MAURO apud ASOR ROSA, 2001) who, thinking of themselves, ponder about their existences. Unlike other Moravian characters, such as Mariagrazia from Gli indifferenti (1929) or Cecilia from La noia (1960), these paper-women no longer seem to support the male intelectual figure. On the contrary, they make themselves heard through their own stories, exposing their dramas with a great amount of theatricality.

Abstract:
The Parsley Massacre – the killing of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic in 1937 – is the theme of The farming of bones (1998), written by Edwidge Danticat, who offers the reader a fictional testimony of a survivor of the violence of genocide. Similarly, in Solar storms (1995), Linda Hogan makes the descendant of a massacred people the protagonist of a search for the past and her people’s history. Both novels employ narrative strategies for a fictional representation of trauma, as personal and collective experiences, implicating the reader in the production of meaning (CARUTH 1996; FREUD; 1920). It is by reliving and re-experiencing the past that traumatized subjects can make sense of their present condition and claim an identity for themselves (HALL, 2006). It is by revising the past, a historically silenced past, that the voices of a community can be heard and their stories brought out to light. In this study, I am also interested in how these stories are constructed, in what are their effects on the surface of the text and their implications in the empowering of subjects. Moreover, I investigate the connections between the traumatized body and the mind, understanding the body as an historical surface for the inscription of human experience (GROSZ, 1994).

Abstract:
This mini-thesis is situated in the discourse on patriarchy, nationhood and its artistic forms. It is argued that an uncritical pursuit of commonality as a political aesthetic strategy for dance in South Africa repeats the metaphysical foundationalism of this discourse. It is further suggested that a postmodern ethos subverts this heritage, while at the same time offering a viable alternative for accommodating and representing the cultural diversity and plurality characteristic of current theatre dance in South Africa. Chapter One examines the way dance has historically structured its patriarchal form the postmodern discourses Chapter Two as a site and practice through explores the potential of deconstruction and destabilisation of this dance heritage. This chapter also assesses the relevance of a postmodern alternative in a South African dance context. Chapter Three analyses the postmodern choreographic strategies of two South African choreographers, Gary Gordon and Robyn Orlin, in order to reveal how their dance vision to patriarchal aesthetic form and offers an uncritical alternative notions of commonality. In conclusion, it is argued postmodern ethos embodied in the work that the of these choreographers provides viable directions for formulating and articulating new dance directions for theatre dance in South Africa while, at the same time, bearing witness to the diversity that will always structure expressions of commonality in South African dance.

Abstract:

Fontanesi, Elena. "Habitat use of migrating dwarf minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata subspecies) in Tasmanian waters." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2016. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/9754/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Great Barrier Reef hosts the only known reliable aggregation of dwarf minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata subspecies) in Australian waters. While this short seasonal aggregation is quite predictable, the distribution and movements of the whales during the rest of their annual cycle are poorly understood. In particular, feeding and resting areas on their southward migration which are likely to be important have not been described. Using satellite telemetry data, I modelled the habitat use of seven whales during their southward migration through waters surrounding Tasmania. The whales were tagged with LIMPET satellite tags in the GBR in July 2013 (2 individuals) and 2014 (5 individuals). The study area around Tasmania was divided into 10km² cells and the time spent by each individual in each cell was calculated and averaged based on the number of animals using the cell. Two areas of high residency time were highlighted: south-western Bass Strait and Storm Bay (SE Tasmania). Remotely sensed ocean data were extracted for each cell and averaged temporally during the entire period of residency. Using Generalised Additive Models I explored the influence of key environmental characteristics. Nine predictors (bathymetry, distance from coast, distance from shore, gradient of sea surface temperature, sea surface height (absolute and variance), gradient of current speed, wind speed and chlorophyll-a concentration) were retained in the final model which explained 68% of the total variance. Regions of higher time-spent values were characterised by shallow waters, proximity to the coast (but not to the shelf break), high winds and sea surface height but low gradient of sea surface temperature. Given that the two high residency areas corresponded with regions where other marine predators also forage in Bass Strait and Storm Bay, I suggest the whales were probably feeding, rather than resting in these areas.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the literary manifestation of patriarchal embodiment in several multicultural novels: Ama Ata Aidoo's Changes: A Love Story, Fadia Faqir's Pillars of Salt, and Jeanette Winterson's Written on the Body. Using theories of embodiment, gender, and power, I analyze how the female body is cast as a surface onto which gendered power structures can be inscribed, as well as the ways in which the body subverts cultural gender norms. The novels exemplify the relationship among literature, culture, and consciousness and offer visions of feminism outside of a Western paradigm. Abstract:
Many children have insufficient early literacy experiences and fail to obtain proficient emergent literacy before they enter kindergarten. Reading to young children has been positively linked to improving their emergent literacy. Numerous factors influence how engaged children are while being read to including the adult’s prosody, receptive vocabulary, and the home literacy environment. Using a quantitative quasiexperimental design, this study sought to understand the association among prosody, child engagement (emotional, cognitive, behavioral-eye, and behavioral-body), receptive vocabulary, and the home literacy environment. The sample included 76 3-5 year-old children from local child care centers and their parents. To understand the relationship between prosody and engagement, children were randomly assigned to watch a story with typical or high prosody. Emotional, cognitive, behavioral-eye, and behavioral-body engagement measures were used to understand how engaged children were in the story. Children’s receptive vocabulary was assessed, and parents completed a home literacy survey. The moderating effects of receptive vocabulary and the home literacy environment (i.e., how much time parents spent reading to children and children’s TV time) between prosody and each type of engagement was examined. Children’s engagement did not differ between typical and high prosody stories. A statistically significant relationship was found between the cognitive and behavioral-eye r(74) = .44, p < .01, cognitive and behavioral-body r(74) = .30, p < .01, and behavioral-eye and behavioral-body engagement measures r(74) = .72, p < .01. Receptive vocabulary and the home literacy environment did not moderate the relationship between story prosody and any type of engagement.

Full text
Abstract:

Donofrio, Jennifer M. "DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION: CONSUMERS’ AND CITY PLANNERS’ PERCEIVED BARRIERS TO INTEGRATING LARGE-SCALE RETAIL INTO THE DOWNTOWN." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2008. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/30.

Full text
Abstract:
Statement of Problem Revitalization of downtowns across America continues to be challenged by the shift to the suburbs. The barriers to integrating large-scale retail in a small, medium, and large city downtown were examined. Forces of Data The System View Planning Theory (Taylor, 1998) guided the study of city planners’ and consumers’ perceived barriers to integrating large scale retail into the downtown. In order to ascertain the barriers to integrating large-scale retail into the downtown intercept-surveys with consumers (n=30, responded to the intercept survey in each city) and interviews with city planners were conducted. Conclusion Reached Some significant differences were found between perceived barriers towards integrating large-scale retail into small and large-city downtowns. Although most consumers reported a positive attitude towards large-scale retail, most consumers in Tucson and San Diego indicated that the cost of shopping in the downtown outweighed the benefits. Traffic, parking, pedestrian-friendly street-oriented environment, and local character are among the major barriers identified by the study cities to integrating large-scale retail into the downtown. However, over half of the consumers surveyed agreed that they would shop at large-scale retail on the weekdays if it were available, but less than half of consumers in Tucson and San Diego would shop at large-scale retail on the weekends. Recommendations Three recommendations were suggested to successfully establish and sustain large-scale retail in the downtown. 1. Continue to find creative solutions to parking and traffic barriers. 2. Create a multifunctional, walkable downtown, with amenities to meet most consumers’ needs. 3. Establish retail stores in the downtown that enhance the local character and cater to residents’ needs rather than mostly tourist needs.

Ho, Ka-wing Sam, and 何家榮. "Story of a plastic box manufacturer : documenting Hong Kong's intangible industrial heritage : the case of Tin Shing, a Hong Kong cottage industry." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/208075.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1980, the plastic-box manufacturer “Shun Wo Company Limited.” (順和公司) was established in a flatted factory in the industrial estate of Kwun Tong. Seven years before, from 1973 to 1979, the company began as a home-based cottage industry, known as Tin Shing (天成) in a public housing unit in the Choi Hung Estate. This cottage industry was founded by Mr. Ho Chi Wo, who is the author’s father. The story behind the family cottage industry is a typical case that illustrates Hong Kong’s early process of industrialization, and it is essential in the understanding of Hong Kong’s industrial heritage. Hong Kong’s cottage industry is not a well-documented topic, and there is limited written literature on it. Given the benefit of having the first-hand experience of involving in a cottage industry, the author seizes the opportunity to document his family business in order to provide an in-depth case study that can help broaden the present knowledge of how individual families have contributed to Hong Kong’s industrialization effort. The objective is to provide a case that illustrates the tangible and intangible aspects of Hong Kong’s early industrial heritage. The focus of this dissertation is to investigate the history of the cottage industry Tin Shing during its five years of existence before it transformed into a proper manufacturing company. In particular, the research focuses on the relationship between a cottage industry and the greater society, of how a traditional family-owned cottage industry business responded to Hong Kong’s changing social and economic circumstances in the early 1970s.

Abstract:

Polluted storm water from a metal recycling industry has been filtrated through columns that contained two different adsorbents, peat and pine bark. Peat is an organic soil, mainly used for energy production, and pine bark, a by-product from the forest industry. In Sweden, there are a lot of resources of peat as well as pine bark. Used as filter materials, they are relatively cheep and, like other kinds of filtermaterial used as adsorbents, they have varied capacity to adsorb metals in water. The capacity for the filter materials to adsorb metals depends on the physical structure and chemical contents of the peat and pine bark as well as the water metal composition. Results from this study show that pine bark had the highest adsorption capacity to reduce copper, lead and zinc from the specific storm water.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research contributes a detailed personal account of a FEMEN activist. It presents an autophenomenographic analysis of cultural artefacts, including a Retrospective Diary, resulting from the activity of Yelena Myshko in FEMEN between 2012 and 2014. Previously FEMEN has been used as raw material for external analysis by press and academics to fit their individual agendas. To counteract this, Myshko’s research proposes an insider perspective on FEMEN activism. She writes herself in response to academics and FEMEN leader Inna Shevchenko who ignore the contribution of FEMEN Netherlands. Myshko merges author/researcher/researched and uses evocative storytelling to provide an introspective account of sextremism, connecting it to relevant embodiment concepts that illustrate its technology of empowerment and unintended side effects.   Through an autophenomenographic analysis of her personal experience, Myshko suggests how FEMEN employs sextremism to create soldiers of feminism. Her research proposes that sextremism is an attitude, a way of life and technology of resistance. For Myshko, sextremism embodies feminist polemic that turns against patriarchy through topless protest. Through personal accounts she illustrates how she internalized this aggressive femininity during physical and mental training. Myshko argues that in protest FEMEN activists communicate to the public and mobilize new activists through feminist snap. In addition, Myshko observes that sextremism produces visual activism that internalizes feminist polemic and transforms it into figurative storytelling. Myshko explains how she reproduced sextremism through body image that made her assertive and empowered her in action.   In turn Myshko demonstrates how personal accounts of sextremist embodiment and problems encountered as a woman in the world reproduce FEMEN’s fight in the media. Myshko analysis interviews with the press where she pinpoints topical feminist issues, making FEMEN real and relevant in Western society. Myshko observes that the media appropriated the spectacle created by FEMEN Netherlands but often distorted it and bend the news to fit its own agenda. In addition, the media criticized FEMEN Netherlands for cross-passing national values and power symbols. For Myshko, sextremism is empowering but also destructive. It promotes an unapologetic self-critical attitude that accumulates collateral damage in battle. The sporadic and restrained relationships between activists does not allow intimacy. Because of the eye of the media, tenderness is perceived as weakness and is not aloud. The combination of criticism, media scrutiny and police persecution hurt Myshko’s feelings. These unresolved feelings of hurt led to resentment and disengagement from FEMEN.

Estola, E. (Eila). "In the language of the mother — re-storying the relational moral in teachers' stories." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2003. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514269713.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This is an overview of five substudies, which are based on autobiographical stories of teachers working in early childhood education and general education. By the concept of 'relational moral', I refer to human relationships between teachers and children or adolescents. I approached the main question 'How is the storied relational moral of teachers constructed in a re-storying process?' through two subquestions: 1. What is relational moral like as a moral horizon in teachers' narrative identity? and 2. What is relational moral like as a storied educational practice? Teachers' relational moral was considered to find its expression in the language of the mother. This view has its roots in feminist research, which has pointed out that identities are gendered, and that the historical and cultural roots of relational moral in the Western culture lie in the practices of mothers. This view also emphasizes that gender constitutes an important distinction in language use. Since the voices of women do not have the same power as the voices of men, the voices of relational moral are not heard. Basing on the applications of the narrative-biographical approach I analysed the stories as representative of the language of practice, i.e. as moral, multivoiced and dialogical. In the process of re-storying, I interpreted the moral words denoting vocation, hope, love, change and body as Other-oriented concepts implying the need to listen to children and a future orientation. Teachers construct their narrative embodied identities under the cross-pressure of different and contradictory voices. The loudest contradictory voices come from the administration, social and educational policies, and the media. The relational moral was storied as an embodied practice, as physical work in which many silent voices become audible through touching, gentleness and closeness. The concept of body position was developed as a tool to understand the concrete working bodies that carry moral meanings. Teachers' stories involve many body positions, of which the positions of relational moral are not always officially appreciated
Tutkimuskysymystäni, millaiseksi opettajien ihmissuhteisiin perustuva moraali rakentuu uudelleenkerrottuna, tarkastelin kahden alakysymyksen kautta. Ensin kuvasin, millaiseksi moraaliseksi horisontiksi rakentuu ihmissuhteisiin perustuva moraali opettajien narratiivisessa identiteetissä.

Abstract:
Contemporary western consumerist society exposes individuals to a world of aestheticism with emphasis placed on fashioning the physical body into an unrealistic culturally prescribed ideal. Conflating personality and lifestyle attributes with body shape, individuals attempt to create a sense of self through their physical presentation. As a likely consequence, increasing numbers of people are experiencing disordered eating symptoms and psychological therapists are reporting greater numbers of clients presenting with eating disorders. Recognising that therapists are situated within their own body and have their own relationships with food and eating, the thesis explores how the empathic, relational nature of therapy with clients experiencing eating disorders affects those therapists. A constructivist grounded theory approach to data generation and analysis was initially employed. This was then expanded to incorporate heuristic research analysis practices as the inseparability of the researcher’s academic, therapeutic and personal selves from the study became evident. Semi structured interviews were undertaken with eighteen psychological therapists. Five were person-centred counsellors working in general practice, who formed a preliminary study. The main body of the study comprised thirteen therapists specialising in therapy with clients experiencing eating disorders. In relation to their client work, therapists experienced a range of feelings and also described changes to their own narratives regarding food, eating and their embodied experience. Conceptualising the body as a representation of self, both therapists’ and clients’ bodies were recognised as a visible form of self-disclosure, and thus symbolic communication tool, within the therapy room. The therapeutic orientation of the therapists interviewed was shown to influence both their conceptualisations of eating disorders and their interpretations of their own experiences. Acknowledging that therapists work in different ways, the thesis suggests training topics to enhance understanding of the multifactorial nature of eating disorders which therapists can integrate into their practice.

In this dissertation, we present the capability of a new network of sensors to monitor the atmospheric electric field at various locations in South America. The main goal is to obtain the characteristic Universal Time daily curve of the atmospheric electric field in fair-weather. That curve is known as the Carnegie curve, which is related to the currents flowing in the Global Atmospheric Electric Circuit. This has been accomplished using monthly, seasonal and annual averages. After obtaining our standard curve of variation of the electric field in fair-weather, the deviations related to phenomena such as solar flares, solar protons events, geomagnetic storms, total solar eclipse and seismic activity are analyzed and commented.

Abstract:
The distribution, composition and some aspects of long-term temporal variation of macrofauna from shallow waters of Admiralty Bay are reasonably well know. The present study aimed to investigate the short-term variation of macrofauna, with emphasis on Polychaeta, in Martel Inlet. Sediment was sampled, at 20 m depth, with a van Veen grab for approximately 35 days, almost every week. During the study period, significant variations were verified on the density of some taxa (Amphipoda and Polychaeta), as well as on the sediment composition. Bivalvia, Amphipoda, Cumacea and Oligochaeta at the first sediment layers were more susceptible to the impact of the severe storms. The dominant species of Polychaeta were Rhodine intermedia, Ophelina syringopyge, O. gymnopyge, Apistobranchus glacierae and Tharyx cf. cincinnatus, counting for 87% of the total group. The density of Ophelina gymnopyge presented a significant short-term variation, however, ecological descriptors for Polychaeta assemblages did not vary at the same way. These results collaborate to the INCT-APA, by providing important information to interpret the acquired data about the environmental monitoring program developed in Admiralty Bay. This study is part of the International Polar Year project \"MABIREH\" and will integrate \"SCAR-MarBin\" and \"ABBED\" data bases.

Langhard, Jessie. "The speed of precision : How the OODA loop benefits from accurate technology." Thesis, Försvarshögskolan, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-9225.

Abstract:
This paper examines how precision resources, such as Precision Guided Munitions (PGM) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), can affect the OODA loop decision making cycle. PGMs add precision and force to kinetic strikes, whilst UASs bring precision and endurance to the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) field. The research is conducted as a qualitative case study with two cases - the first one being Operation Desert Storm (1991) where precision weapons were first introduced in a large scale operation, and the second one being Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003) which was conducted in a similar environment and organization, but with a huge technological advancement when it came to PGMs and UASs. The four phases of the OODA loop are examined separately, and the two cases are compared to reveal any similarities or differences. The results indicate that precision resources have a beneficial impact on the speed and accuracy of all four phases, as well as the overall efficiency of the OODA loop. The results also indicate the importance of having sound intelligence (which cements John Boyd’s claim that Orientation is the most important part of the loop) and that the next challenge after precision and ISR-capabilities might be successful coordination of the joint forces on tactical and operational levels to gain speed even further.
