Burns, Barbara. "Theory and patterns of tragedy in the later Novellen of Theodor Storm." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13349.

Abstract:
The thesis is an attempt to refute the indictment of Storm's work as being sentimental and melancholy, arguing that such a judgment fails to take account of the writer's portrayal of tragedy in the final seventeen years of his life. Chapter One analyses a number of aspects of Storm's thought and experience which disposed him towards a tragic view of the world: this includes an examination of the possible impact of the popular philosophies of Feuerbach, the Materialists, Darwin and Schopenhauer, as well as the significance of his educational background, his career as a judge, and his attitude to family life, religion, politics and society. Chapter Two considers the aesthetic convictions underlying Storm's conception and portrayal of tragedy, looking also at the idea of the Novelle as a suitable medium for tragedy and at the relationship between the author's later work and the tragedies of Naturalism. Chapters Three to Five present a detailed study of six individual Novellen which treat themes representative of Storm's work. Chapter Three focuses on Storm's attitude to the destructive potential of prejudice and superstition in society, taking Renate (1878) and Ein Doppelganger (1886) as examples of "The Tragedy of Social Compulsion". Chapter Four investigates his pessimistic preoccupation with the subject of heredity, discussing John Riew' (1885) and Der Herr Etatsrat (1881) as cases of "The Tragedy of Genetic Compulsion". Chapter Five is entitled "The Tragedy of Personal Responsibility": it examines Ein Bekenntnis (1887) and Zur Chronik von Grieshuus (1883) as Novellen in which the leading characters incur specific moral guilt, and considers the nature and results of their attempts to atone for their crime.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to define the scope of the different aspects of theodor storm's art of the short story- theodor storm considered as one of the 19th century major writers in the german language. The adopted method, instead of holding the notion of short story as an evidence then to try to demonstrate afterwards to what extent these works would confrom to preestablished norms, on the contrary is built upon a precise analysis of the texts - more formal than thematic - and endeavours to induce its organizing rules, its distinctive features. The study includes six main parts : the general form of the works, the narrators and the narration, the actions, the time, the places, the caracters

Abstract:
This dissertation offers an analysis of canonical texts from German literary realism using the anxiety that is felt by readers and writers in what constitutes the margins of realist literature in the 19th century: the feminine, the fantastic and ornamentations. These aesthetic, anthropologic and social categories are linked as they are all defined by a binary opposition that turns them into the Other or the Inessential: male-female, reality-fantastic, art-ornamentation. The hierarchy upon which these oppositions are built is however not that stable as these elements at the margin do trouble and replace what constitutes the society’s normative core. The fantastic elements in the works of the authors are used as constituting materials to engage the literary discussion on present and real social problems at the time of writing. The relationships between the sexes and genders which were so clearly described in the bourgeois era are seen as ambivalent and in motion. The three parts of this dissertation provide an in-depth analysis of the works of Theodor Fontane, Gottfried Keller and Theodor Storm. The first section of the work will focus on the figure of the woman as an aesthetic which is both captured and fixed in the image. It will show that this idealised and pictured feminine becomes the catalyst for unbridled and unruly imagination. Then, the traditional roles and behaviours within patriarchal marriage will then be shown to be largely inspired by literary tradition, and in particular in the myths and the fairy-tale (Penelope, Cinderella, the Witch, etc.). Lastly, the relationships between the ideal bourgeois family and the patriarchal family will be analysed in the work of Fontane and Storm. As the era of German realist literature ended, patriarchal marriage was haunted by the ghosts of gender roles, which however obsolete, were still predominant. This paradox made families unheimlich in the Freudian sense

Abstract: The goal of this research is to analyze the short-novel Pole Poppenspaeler as a narrative organized around the theme of the opposition between the artist and the bourgeois citizen. Such an analysis perspective will comprehend not only the treatment given to the theme (very dear to German literature), but also the representation the theme has in the context of Poetic Realism, besides the way the genre of short-novel has develop itself. In Pole Poppenspaeler, the conflict generated by the transition between two different perspectives (one from the bourgeois world and another from the artist) condense itself, in a symbolic way, through the characters¿s Tendler and Paul journey; at the same time, it is present (in a realistic manner) the geographic and human characterization of "simple people" ("kleine Leute"), like countrymen, workmen and artisans. Also the geographic and linguistic regionalization are according to the typical repertory of the XIXth century realism. In order to our hypothesis of interpretation be effectively executed, the History of the short-novel as a genre was reviewed in its different moments of existence. Therefore, it is possible to investigate how the alteration of the hystorical processes provokes an alteration in the representation of the conflict between the artist¿s and the bourgeois citizen¿s mindsets. Keywords: German literature, Poetic Realism, motive, short-novel

Abstract:
A short story is a brief narrative and therefore can represent the tragic of existence : it catches on the spot all the events of life and presents them in a restricted economy. Theodor Storm and Guy de Maupassant obey the rule and offer narratives marked by fatality, which is the demonstration of fate and/ or chance shown through the description of realistic landscapes and through the emphasis of key objects which pull with them the decline of the characters. The narrative technique also serves the fabrication of this determinism. So, both authors allow themselves to intersperse stories, to go back into the narration, so that the weigh of fate and/ or chance is heavier and works as a spring mechanism taking place tragically. Nevertheless, even if everything suggests the opposite, these short stories are not so pessimistic. Indeed, a life force typical of the philosophical and social thinking of the 19th century arises from this fatality marked with fate and/ or chance. Fate and/ or chance is in fact the blind expression of a will which determines the choice of characters. So these short stories emphasize the illusion of characters' free will who think they can decide of their life. From there, the creative impulse stemming from the writing allows a interruption of this determinism. So, it is those mechanisms of fate that are defused in this work to observe this saving and liberatoring life force, inherent to the philosophic and literary concept of the XIXth century

This thesis explores the effect of the 1848 revolutionary cycle in Spain and its imperial space, focusing on its global connections and on the intersections between revolution, counterrevolution, and empire building. In doing so, it aims to contribute to a global approach to the 1848 revolutions that goes beyond perspectives that are exclusively centred on Europe as space. In this thesis, mid-nineteenth century Spain is understood not as a nation-state within the Iberian Peninsula, but as a fluid global empire with colonies, diasporas, and exile communities in various spaces. Considering the chronological frame of a “long 1848” and using various scales, this thesis stresses the continuities between the political upheavals and international reconfigurations that occurred around the year 1846, and the revolutionary events of 1848-1849. This thesis opposes the traditional image of Spain as an exception to the revolutionary cycle. It argues that the Parisian Revolution did in fact have a significant impact on the Iberian Peninsula, which prompted the Spanish government to develop counterrevolutionary measures on both sides of the Atlantic. Exile communities in Europe and spaces like Paris, Oran or New Orleans profited from the occasion presented by the 1848 revolutions to challenge either the political status quo in the metropole or the colonial order in the Caribbean. This generated a flow of transnational mobilities of revolutionary (and counterrevolutionary) actors, information, propaganda, and material; mobilities that diverse state actors tried to curtail through various means to prevent revolutionary contagion. At the same time, hundreds of political prisoners were sent to overseas possessions as part of a repressive repertoire that combined counterrevolution and colonisation through the relocation of convicts. Finally, this thesis explores the changes to several political cultures in the Spanish empire during the early 1850s as a result of the revolutionary cycle.

Wallace, Alicia. "Do You Know the Storm?: The Forgotten Lieder of Franz Schreker." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc849748/.

Full text
Abstract:
Franz Schreker (1878-1934) was a Jewish-Austrian composer of great success during the first decades of the twentieth century. Schreker’s reputation diminished after 1933 when Hitler came to power and, in 1938, his compositions were labeled Entartete Musik (“degenerate music”) by the Nazis in a public display in Düsseldorf. The Third Reich and post-war Germany saw Schreker as a decadent outcast, misunderstanding his unique style that combined elements of romanticism, expressionism, impressionism, symbolism, and atonality. This study of Schreker’s Lieder will pursue two goals. First, it will analyze the Mutterlieder (before 1898), the Fünf Gesänge (1909), and the first piece from Vom ewigen Leben (1923) stylistically. Schreker composed nearly four dozen Lieder, incorporating a wide range of styles and ideas. By studying and performing these songs written at various points in his career (including early songs, songs written after he met Schoenberg, and his last songs during the height of his fame), I hope to develop a clearer understanding of how Schreker synthesized the many cultural forces and artistic movements that seem to have influenced his compositional style. Second, this study will consider the sociopolitical circumstances that fueled the disintegration of his reputation. This disintegration occurred not just during the Third Reich, but also afterwards, notably in an often discussed essay by Theodor Adorno. Only in the last thirty years have scholarly voices critical of such rejections of Schreker emerged. My ultimate goal, then, is to join this reevaluation, studying and contextualizing this repertory to develop a new understanding of an oft-neglected chapter in the history of the German Lied.

Abstract:
Between 1880 and 1920 displays in leading department stores reached an unprecedented level of artistic and commercial ambition that required professional skill, engaged with technology, earned consumer attention, and provided distinction between stores. Merchandise arrangements conveyed technical proficiency and innovation specific to the retail setting while their form and content were also in conversation with current events, art, urban life, and popular culture. This thesis explores the making, viewing, and meanings of display. Discussion will be framed around the following questions: What role did display design play in the development of department stores in Chicago, New York and London at the turn of the twentieth century and how can the impact and significance of display be identified in the stores’ material and visual cultures? Drawing from a diverse range of unexplored primary resources and archives, this thesis reveals a set of previously underrepresented design roles, tools, and techniques of display production in the practice of architects, window dressers, shopfitters, and interior decorators who employed manual and mechanical methods to create displays that were on constant view and in continual flux. In this newly changeable retail environment, display’s alignment with fin-de-siècle modernity is explored through the themes of speed, variation, fragmentation, rationalization, and theatricality. Overall this thesis analyzes how display achieved an agency to transform everyday objects into commodities and to make consumers out of passersby.

Abstract:
Hallucination was always the ghost story's elephant in the room. Even before the vogue for psychical research and spiritualism began to influence writers at the end of the nineteenth century, tales of horror and the supernatural, of ghosts and demons, had been haunted by the possibility of some grand deception by the senses. Edgar Allan Poe's stories were full of mad narrators, conscience-stricken criminals and sinners, and protagonists who doubted their very eyes and ears. Writers such as Dickens and Le Fanu continued this idea of the cheat of the senses. But what is certainly true is that, towards the end of the century, hallucination took on a new force and significance in ghostly and horror fiction. Now, its presence was not the dominion of a handful of experimental thinkers but the province of popular authors writing very different kinds of stories. The approaches had become many and diverse, from Arthur Machen's ambivalent interest in occultism to Vernon Lee's passion for art and antiquity. Henry James's The Turn of the Screw (1898) is the most famous text to pose a question that was, in fact, being asked by many writers of the time: reality or delusion? Other writers, too, were forcing their readers to assess whether the ghostly had its origins in some supernatural phenomenon from beyond the grave, or from some deception within our own minds. This thesis explores the many factors which contributed to this rise in the interest in hallucination and visionary experience, during the period 1880-1914. From the time when psychical research became hugely popular, up until the First World War often considered a watershed in the history of the ghost story and literature in general something happened to the ghost story and related fiction. Through a close analysis of stories and novels written by Robert Louis Stevenson, Vernon Lee, Henry James, Arthur Machen, and Oliver Onions, I attempt to find out what happened, and even more importantly why it happened at all.

Borrelli, Marco. Thesis, Lyon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LYSEN012.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was originally based on the objective to individuate the newspapers and the periodicals that, in the early post-unity era, hosted the novellas of the most important writers of the time. However, even if we took into account some interesting publishing examples and the evolution of press in the 19th century, we decided to focus on the case of “Rassegna Settimanale”, since we believe that this hebdomadal, founded by Leopoldo Franchetti and Sidney Sonnino in 1878 in Florence, played an essential role in the evolution of modern novella. Therefore, in order to give the reader the opportunity to gather the innovations produced by the Florentine periodical, the first chapter illustrates the historical, political and socio-cultural context of the journal. While during Risorgimento the idealistic and oligarchic concept of society was prevailing, starting from the ‘70s Franchetti and Sonnino’s thought introduced new subjects into the debate about the relationship between elites and farming masses, between the North and the South. In their thought there is a new idea of State, seen as a super partes welfarist authority, called to intervene in the economic life of the Country to fight mistreatments and social disequilibrium. The new perspective about masses and poverty is the foothold for the rise of verism and novella, which becomes the typical genre of modernity when novelists dismiss omniscient narration and opt for a type of narrator supporting a less stylized idea of the working class. That is, novella turns into short story when it assumes the ideological perspective suggested by the directors of “Rassegna Settimanale”. Taking into consideration the theories of novella composition advocated by Edgar Allan Poe, the contraintes established by the journal (especially standard length and organic connection with the social themes dear to the two directors) turn out to be essential to the future acknowledgment of the genre. For these reasons, the last part of this research consists of a reinterpretation of novellas of the journal’s most renowned writers, such as Giovanni Verga, Mario Pratesi, Matilde Serao, Renato Fucini, Emilio De Marchi, in light of the new publishing conditions fostered by Sonnino and Franchetti

Abstract:
In the eyes of the American public excellence is often overshadowed by brilliance of personality. This is particularly true in the portrayal of many of the country's military leaders in World War II. A prime example of this phenomenon is Douglas MacArthur, whose larger than life persona made him a newspaper fixture during the war despite a series of strategic and tactical blunders that would have led to the sacking of a less visible (and publicly popular) leader. At the level of divisional commanders, this triumph of brilliance over excellence is best exemplified by the two primary leaders of the country's 1st Infantry Division, Terry de la Mesa Allen and Clarence R. Huebner. One was a hard-drinking, swashbuckling leader who led by almost the sheer force of his personality; the other, a plain spoken, demanding officer who believed that organization, planning and attention to detail were the keys to superior battlefield performance. The leadership differences between Allen and Huebner have been documented in multiple publications. What has not been documented is the life of the truly overshadowed general - Huebner. Huebner's transition to the leadership of the 1st Infantry Division (1st ID) constitute only a small period in a military career that spans almost fifty years and two world wars. Huebner's story is cyclic in that throughout his life, his actions regularly complete a full circle with a return to key organizations, areas or relationships from where they started. In many respects, Huebner's story parallels the 20th century biography of the army itself. His is an American military story. This thesis is focused on Huebner's life in the years prior to the 1st ID's landing at Omaha Beach.

Al-Sinayyid, Ali. "JOB SCHEDULING FOR STREAMING APPLICATIONS IN HETEROGENEOUS DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING SYSTEMS." OpenSIUC, 2020. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1868.

Abstract:
The colossal amounts of data generated daily are increasing exponentially at a never-before-seen pace. A variety of applications—including stock trading, banking systems, health-care, Internet of Things (IoT), and social media networks, among others—have created an unprecedented volume of real-time stream data estimated to reach billions of terabytes in the near future. As a result, we are currently living in the so-called Big Data era and witnessing a transition to the so-called IoT era. Enterprises and organizations are tackling the challenge of interpreting the enormous amount of raw data streams to achieve an improved understanding of data, and thus make efficient and well-informed decisions (i.e., data-driven decisions). Researchers have designed distributed data stream processing systems that can directly process data in near real-time. To extract valuable information from raw data streams, analysts need to create and implement data stream processing applications structured as a directed acyclic graphs (DAG). The infrastructure of distributed data stream processing systems, as well as the various requirements of stream applications, impose new challenges. Cluster heterogeneity in a distributed environment results in different cluster resources for task execution and data transmission, which make the optimal scheduling algorithms an NP-complete problem. Scheduling streaming applications plays a key role in optimizing system performance, particularly in maximizing the frame-rate, or how many instances of data sets can be processed per unit of time. The scheduling algorithm must consider data locality, resource heterogeneity, and communicational and computational latencies. The latencies associated with the bottleneck from computation or transmission need to be minimized when mapped to the heterogeneous and distributed cluster resources. Recent work on task scheduling for distributed data stream processing systems has a number of limitations. Most of the current schedulers are not designed to manage heterogeneous clusters. They also lack the ability to consider both task and machine characteristics in scheduling decisions. Furthermore, current default schedulers do not allow the user to control data locality aspects in application deployment. In this thesis, we investigate the problem of scheduling streaming applications on a heterogeneous cluster environment and develop the maximum throughput scheduler algorithm (MT-Scheduler) for streaming applications. The proposed algorithm uses a dynamic programming technique to efficiently map the application topology onto a heterogeneous distributed system based on computing and data transfer requirements, while also taking into account the capacity of underlying cluster resources. The proposed approach maximizes the system throughput by identifying and minimizing the time incurred at the computing/transfer bottleneck. The MT-Scheduler supports scheduling applications that are structured as a DAG, such as Amazon Timestream, Google Millwheel, and Twitter Heron. We conducted experiments using three Storm microbenchmark topologies in both simulated and real Apache Storm environments. To evaluate performance, we compared the proposed MT-Scheduler with the simulated round-robin and the default Storm scheduler algorithms. The results indicated that the MT-Scheduler outperforms the default round-robin approach in terms of both average system latency and throughput.

Diriyah is a parched settlement in the arid deserts of Central Arabia. It went, very swiftly, from not differing much compared to its local sphere, to assuming the role of a beacon capital which controlled Arabia almost in its entirety. From its ambitious emergence in 1744- which stemmed from a historical pact between political authority and religious influence, until its punitive downfall in 1818- after assuming the role of a bunker under siege for six long months, Diriyah witnessed numerous political stages which effected its built environment. Between a dire need to defend and fortify at one point, and an eager desire to show luxuriousness and grandeur at another, Diriyah's built environment became a shimmering pond reflecting the ever-shifting political status of the state at any given time. By relying on historical textual accounts, infused with visual means of analysis, this thesis explores, and narrates, the urban development history of Diriyah during the timeframe of the First Saudi State (1744-1818), through using its built environment as a main examination tool. Accordingly, Atturaif historic district in Diriyah, was chosen as an urban model which directly stemmed as a result of establishing the state under the double weight of politics and religion. Located on an elevated majestic plateau, Atturaif became the center of power, and the decision-making hub of the ever-growing ambitious state. Hence, its urban form was examined, its core elements investigated, and notions of its symbolism analyzed. Eventually, the project described herein argues that the urban story of Diriyah presented an interesting model to analyze. How a strategic pact between the two different entities of politics and religion came together to turn a small patch of land, amongst ever-battling tribally-ruled settlements, into a capital of a State which possessed the largest extent of influence in the Arabian Peninsula since the 7th century.

Grime, David. "The effect of storms on chenier plains : the Shoal Bay chenier plain." Thesis, The University of Wollongong, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/281556.

Full text
Abstract:
The southern coast of Shoal Bay, near Darwin, Northern Territory is a small, well vegetated chenier plain. Chenier plains are prograded coastal mudflats that support a number of long narrow ridges formed from sand and shell debris, that run parallel to the coast. Mangrove communities on the mudflat occur in zones, also parallel to the coastline, indicating species preference for protection, depth and duration of tidal inundation and level of salinity. Chenier plains are thought to be formed through fluctuations in sediment supply resulting in, episodic coastal progradation, and coastal erosion and ridge deposition above the level of high tide. Some of the literature suggests that progradation may be aided by the seaward mangrove zones trapping sediments, while erosion of the mudflats and subsequent ridge formation can be attributed to high energy storm activity, such as that of a tropical cyclone. This study is involved with examining the recent history of the chenier plain at Shoal Bay, in regard to the effects of cyclone Tracy, which struck the area on December 25, 1974. The storm devastated large areas of the central mangrove zones, those of Bruguiera, Ceriops and Rhizophora, mostly by windthrow. The seaward mangrove zones, such as that of Avicennia, and the landforms were mostly unaffected by the storm winds, and the storm surge associated with the cyclone was relatively small, as it occurred in conjunction with a neap high tide. The overall effects of cyclone Tracy on the chenier plain were much less than those described for other storms in the literature. All of the changes that have occurred on the Shoal Bay chenier plain over the period examined can be explained by normal wave and tide action, and do not require a high energy event.

Abstract:
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the official Korean immigration in South America. The beginning of this vibrant overseas Korean community was humble. The first group of 17 families travelled to Brazil to work in agriculture, and more Koreans with similar intentions followed suit to Brazil and other South American countries. Contrary to popular belief, early Korean agricultural emigration to South America was mainly organised and executed by interested individuals, emigration agents, private emigration agencies and even the Catholic Church. The intervention of the Korean government at this stage was minimal; only in mid-1970s, the Korean government too threw its hat in the ring of overseas agricultural migration. The government's participation lasted only a decade, during which five rural smallholdings were established in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile. Whether privately organised or run by the Korean government, agricultural emigration to South America is widely known as a fiasco - money and time were wasted without any substantial outcome. However, it has rarely been asked why Korea needed an overseas agricultural migration in the first instance, who were behind the project, what the project was about and what happened to the migrants. This research is about the Korean agricultural emigration to South America. In this study I present the origins, development and demise of the Korean agricultural emigration to South America between 1960s and 1980s. This work draws information not only from existing literature and government materials but also from the experience of real and ordinary people who migrated to South America through the project over the years, in a hope to give voice to those who have been forgotten for decades.

Abstract:
Alan Berg's two musical settings of Theodor Storm's poem"Schliesse mir die Augen beide" have received little in the way of scholarly analytical attention. The three major chapters of this thesis deal with the two settings on three different levels. Chapter II surveys the political and cultural milieu in which Berg functioned as a young composer of Lieder in the years 1900-1910. Chapter III examines the special quality of lyricism which is often attributed to Berg and his works. Chapter IV provides more definitive and complete musical analyses of the two settings than have heretofore been available. The question of what role songwriting played in the development of Berg's compositional process is addressed in the conclusion.

Abstract:
The Structural Impediments Initiative (SII) talks held from September 1989 to July 1990 represented the first attempt by Japan and the United States to harmonise their domestic problems in international trade negotiations. These bilateral talks were also the first of their kind to delve into a comprehensive review of domestic laws and intrinsic business practices. In this sense, the SII talks may be seen as a preamble to mutual arrangements by domestic economies of their respective institutions and practices. This is likely to feature more prominently in the field of international relations, as seen recently in the European Community (EC) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). In this context, as the United States and Japan are the two largest and most technologically advanced economies in the world, accounting for more than 40 per cent of the world total gross national product, it is significant that they started harmonising their domestic rules through the SII talks, which are examined in this thesis.

Abstract:
Paul Bonnetain is a forgotten writter, although his two first novels, Charlot s’amuse (1883) and L’Opium (1886), are still famous because of their outrancies. He had a rich life made of various experiences and far away travels which feed his imagination. In 1881, he begins in parisan press and raises quickly to the most famous news papers, among others with his short stories which conciliate Realism and Exotism. His career was punctuated with ambiguities and contradictories statements and his litteraries influences are both numerous and various. If his admiration for Edmond de Goncourt remains the same, the fervent disciple of Émile Zola he was, renounced Naturalism with crashes, as instigator of the “Manifeste des Cinq” in 1887. Although he was a great figure of the litterary word of his time and recognized for his lively and coloured style, he left Paris to take up a colonial career. Paul Bonnetain explorated unkown geographic spacies and found news litteraries horizons too. For all these reasons, his works must be discovered

In this work we aim to show that the different historical experiences by Henrique de Carvalho (Expedição Portugueza ao Muantiânvua: Ethnographia e história tradicional dos povos da Lunda - 1884-1888) (1890), Castro Soromenho (Lueji Ilunga na terra da amizade) (1945) and Pepetela (Lueji: o nascimento dum império) (1989) define certain literary forms, respectively, travel literature, tension short story and novel. These three distinct literary forms are connected with historiographic writings, for Castro Soromenho and Pepetela appropriate Henrique de Carvalho text to elaborate their central plots which focus the space of Lunda. Having in mind that space potentializes the three narratives, in this study we will take into consideration that \"The literary form cannot be understood separate from the content, and neither is it independent from the nature of the subject and the proceedings which are conditioned by this same content. Form depends on the content, and also on the particular aspects of the subject and on the elaboration it implies.\"* (Bakhtin, M. 1992, p.206)

Abstract:
From the mid 19th century to the early 20th century about 1.2 million Swedes left Sweden for a new life in America. Three parishes in Örebro län is at the centre of the research of this essay. The time span of this essay ranges from 1856-1915, divided into three periods; 1856-1870, 1881-1895 and 1901-1915. The main objective has been to compare the three parishes with each other, with Örebro län and with Sweden. What I have wanted to examine has been the following: How many people from each parish emigrated during each period? How many were men, women and children up to the age of 15? In the analysis part of the essay the results were compared parish with parish, and with Örebro län and Sweden. The analysis showed that the emigration of three parishes is commensurate with the Swedish emigration history. The years the emigration reached its peak during each time period, does coinsist well with Sweden in general. For example, during the first period, 1856-1870, the emigration reached its peak in 1869, one of the worst years during the famine years. The Swedish emigration has transformed from family emigration to people emigrating on their own, which in my research is verified by the decreasing number of emigrating children.

Abstract:
In his literary works, the Swedish author Peter Pohl (b. 1940) persistently deals with the issue of friendship which is described as a source of joy and consolation as well as a cause for difficulties and pain. Another common theme in his writing is vulnerability, especially that of children and adolescents, as he regards them as particularly exposed to violence and injustice. Pohl features the act of telling as an important instrument in the process of personal development on many different levels. Finally, his authorship shows that his purpose is to be a spokesman for those who cannot speak for themselves. These four topics which are visible in the main part of his production represent the most important aspects of Pohl's literary project which may be described as a desire to improve the conditions of less privileged groups of society. This thesis deals with the works by Pohl written between 1985 and 2007. In the first chapter, the author is presented. The second chapter is an analysis of his first novel Janne, min vän with a special focus on the above-mentioned themes. Chapter three deals with the novel Malins kung Gurra, a story for young readers that can be looked upon as second, but simpler version of Janne, min vän. In chapter four, the five novels Regnbågen har bara åtta färger, Medan regnbågen bleknar, Vi kallar honom Anna, Vilja växa and Klara papper är ett måste are analyzed and discussed. The last chapter is an attempt at dealing with the remaining books written by Pohl. The aim is to establish whether these works are compatible with the general picture given of Pohl’s literary project.

Full text
Abstract:
Scholars and storytellers alike have deemed George MacDonald a great mythopoeic writer, an exemplar of the art. Examination of this accolade by those who first applied it to him proves it profoundly theological: for them a mythopoeic tale was a relational medium through which transformation might occur, transcending boundaries of time and space. The implications challenge much contemporary critical study of MacDonald, for they demand that his literary life and his theological life cannot be divorced if either is to be adequately assessed. Yet they prove consistent with the critical methodology MacDonald himself models and promotes. Utilizing MacDonald’s relational methodology evinces his intentional facilitating of Mythopoesis. It also reveals how oversights have impeded critical readings both of MacDonald’s writing and of his character. It evokes a redressing of MacDonald’s relationship with his Scottish cultural, theological, and familial environment – of how his writing is a response that rises out of these, rather than, as has so often been asserted, a mere reaction against them. Consequently it becomes evident that key relationships, both literary and personal, have been neglected in MacDonald scholarship – relationships that confirm MacDonald’s convictions and inform his writing, and the examination of which restores his identity as a literature scholar. Of particular relational import in this reassessment is A.J. Scott, a Scottish visionary intentionally chosen by MacDonald to mentor him in a holistic Weltanschauung. Little has been written on Scott, yet not only was he MacDonald’s prime influence in adulthood, but he forged the literary vocation that became MacDonald’s own. Previously unexamined personal and textual engagement with John Ruskin enables entirely new readings of standard MacDonald texts, as does the textual engagement with Matthew Arnold and F.D. Maurice. These close readings, informed by the established context, demonstrate MacDonald’s emergence, practice, and intent as a mythopoeic writer.

Abstract:
A Place In Between tells the story of the Old Northwest through a French family who lived in Quebec and on the Wabash valley from the 1660s through the 1860s. The Brouillette family illustrates the rise and fall of a cultural and geographical middle ground forged by whites and Algonquian-speaking Indians of the Great Lakes region. The Woodland tribes discussed include the Miami, Wea, Piankashaw, Shawnee, Potawatomi, Delaware and Ottawa. The white participants of this middle ground were primarily French, but were joined at times by certain English, Scottish, Irish and Americans. The middle ground and trade culture created a people of mixed heritage called metis by the French, which means mixed-blood. Because of their place between cultures metis often acted as arbitrators of culture. They often found employment as interpreters, scouts or in the fur trade. The fall of the middle ground included the loss of a valuable Indian country to native people, as well as a shift from a rich cultural interchange to a socially and politically inferior status for the tribal people of the central Great Lakes. This story traces the lives of three main characters: Michel Brouillette, the elder and younger who were both traders; and the French-Miami son, Tahquakeah. Flashbacks to French ancestors illustrate the early creation of the middle ground through trade and military alliances.

Abstract:
The thesis caters to the demands of the creative industries for products and contents which can be utilized for convergent media usage and cross-marketing strategies. In this regard character design serves as an important element of entertainment franchises since it is a means to produce media content with high recognition value. However, numerous character adaptations in different media formats illustrate that characters who are successful in one medium are not necessarily as successful in another media format. The thesis takes a closer look at characters in the context of media convergence and discusses the main principles of character creation and development. By favoring a heuristic approach which analyzes the aesthetic phenomena of arts and entertainment by the means of theoretical research which is supported by practical examples, the thesis concludes that character development is based on three dimensions which have to be combined in order to create characters which can be utilized for different media formats. In this context the work discusses character creation in writing, visuals and interactive media by focusing on ways which secure the successful transfer of characters into different media formats without a loss of character depth and quality.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a comprehensive study of the life story of a union worker, social commentator and film director.A theorical investigation was necessary in order to expose the narrration to a dialectic and historical materialism. It allowed to identify the main contardictions to define key knowledge and apply the marxian approach. We identified eight categories allowing new thought processes and reflecting eight keywords. The first stems from the analysis of the narration, while the second is future-oriented.The workers’ writing of their own life and experience brings several epistemological obstacles and do not allow any considerable change of the working conditions. We advanced the hypothesis that current digital technologies allow to whitness these work experiences through a method using both photography (practical approach) and film – with the interaction of the peers and experts - (theorical approach.)We will conclude that workers’ roles are significantly different from what testimonies usually lead the public to believe. This thesis’ perspective aims at creating collective view points supporting democratic work conditions, where protagonists are able to identify their own intentions as well as other’s. To this end, we will emphasize the necessity of work cliniques. Our approach is in line with Ivar Oddone’s teachings, supporting a method allowing to collectively read the workplace experience via a movement from realistic to concrete, between two types of analysis

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to investigate how Carl Linnaeus’ (1707-1778) expedition to Sápmi (‘Lapland’) 1732 was depicted in the centennial, bicentennial and tricentennial commemoration of his birth in 1807, 1907 and 2007 and the centennial and bicentennial remembrance to his death in 1878 and 1978. It will, furthermore, examine if the celebrations of his expedition were also used to legitimize the Swedish colonialization of Sápmi. The source material are speeches given at the commemorations and articles published in conjunction with the remembrance of Linnaeus. The essay concludes that the commemorations of the 19th century were characterized by an inclination to portray the dangers of his expedition. This focus point, however, gradually shifted towards praising the scientific aspects and accolades of the expedition during the 20th and the 21st centuries. The appreciation of Linnaeus character in association with the journey remained a constant during all commemorations, with some exceptions. The conclusion regarding the legitimizing aspect, is that the majority of the 19th and early 20th century commemorations partially, at least legitimized the fiscal approach that the expedition had. However, the celebrations in 1978 and 2007 lacked this aspect.

Abstract:
This thesis fills an important research gap in the sociology of ageing and life course, and the sociology of sexualities and intimacies by exploring the understudied experience of singlehood among older gay men. It is a qualitative study based on semi-structured in-depth life story interviews conducted with 25 self-identified gay men over the age of 50 who live in England and have been single for most of their lives. The primary objective of the study is to investigate how older single gay men interpret and assign meanings to their lives in later life. In considering the role of narratives in bridging structure and agency, the thesis suggests that the older gay men’s narratives of singlehood need to be understood with reference to the master narrative in society that privileges couplehood. The master narrative undoubtedly informed and at times overshadowed the ways in which the older gay men understood their lives. But at the same time this thesis finds that the research participants engaged with the master narrative in a variety of creative ways – they did not only adopt, but also adapted and subverted the dominant story line. These counter-stories do not only reproduce, but have the potential to reinvent, the meanings of relationships in contemporary societies. To achieve this, resources were needed in reframing the master narrative. From a life course perspective the thesis suggests that the older gay men’s earlier life experiences and current social locations influenced the narratives they told. Only some of the older single gay men were able to (re-)claim sexual citizenship while others were denied this. In addition, the older gay men’s story-telling was filled with ambivalence and ambiguities. As a whole, the thesis sees the older gay men’s stories as displaying agency within structure.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is an analysis of The True Story of Ah Q in English translation (in Chinese-English bilingual format). By applying new translation theories, specifically those of Christiane Nord and Lawrence Venuti, and by demonstrating their applicability it is hoped that this research project will contribute to these theories becoming more accepted in China. The skopos theory and the concepts domestication and foreignisation are the main translation theories utilised in this thesis. The research was begun with the hypothesis that the translators domesticated the English target text, based on Venuti’s belief that the majority of English translations domesticate the original. The two main research questions are: What is the dominant translation strategy utilised by the translators? Does this strategy fulfil the skopos (i.e. the aims of the translation)? The research will also give suggestions for an improved translation and a more effective translation strategy in light of the skopos. In addition, the study will determine whether the bilingual format is suited for the fulfilment of the current skopos. As pointed out in the publisher’s note, this Chinese-English bilingual version of The True Story of Ah Q is intended to exhibit this modern Chinese classic as a great piece of Chinese literature. The primary aim of the translation is to give readers a real experience of the depth and the heights of Chinese culture. The secondary aims of the translation focus on language learning as well as the function for translators (namely to use this translation as an example for future translations). This research project will determine if the translation has fulfilled these aims. The translation theories on which the analyses in this thesis are based are presented in the literature study (chapter 2). This provides the foundation for the comparison between the Chinese ST and the English TT, the evaluation of the translation, and subsequent conclusions. Chapters 3 and 4 present the application of the theory, divided into an analysis of the macro and microstructures respectively. Translation decisions are analysed on these two levels within the theoretical insights presented in chapter 2. It will be these chapters that provide the foundation for the research findings of this thesis. In cases where improvements of the translation are proposed, suggestions will be made and motivated by theoretical insights. The final chapter (chapter 5) will answer the research questions in detail, based on the individual analyses made in chapters 3 and 4 and motivate these answers based mainly on the translation theories of Nord and Venuti. These answers as well as the suggestions for an improved translation are the main contributions that this thesis makes to translation studies. Lastly, suggestions for further research are made in order to stimulate further research on English translations produced in China.

"Wittgenstein's Tractatus deranged : a metaphilosophical story." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/37069.

Full text
Abstract:
Taking off from some the more recent discussions regarding the puzzling character of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, this dissertation aims at four main points, mostly negative ones, all closely related when considered from a Wittgensteinian angle: an exegetical, a metaphilosophical, a linguistic, and an ethical point. [1] Serving as a background illuminating the remaining three, the exegetical point is concerned with the particular modes of philosophical criticism Wittgenstein’s works ask for, favouring the idea that it is impossible to expound them as something finished, and so than even the Tractatus shall prove more profitable when taken as a collection of remarks, not as a system. [2] Arguably as pivotal, the metaphilosophical point expounds a non-metaphysical view of philosophy, aware of its own mutable, given its contiguity with all our other activities, and practical character: philosophy, we hold, following Wittgenstein, is the art of (dis)solving intellectual puzzles, a contribution to understanding, not to knowledge. [3] The linguistic point is somewhat made manifest by the former: the ways of doing philosophy here adopted, relying as much on hinting (often through the deliberate employment of figurative modes of expression or even nonsense) as on argument, end up indirectly drawing attention to the untenability of the idea that language might be a somewhat self-sufficient and clearly defined structure, asking for definitive explanations of its workings. [4] As for the ethical point, a complaint against prevailing contemporary approaches to ethics and aesthetics, and alongside the more or less subtle hints already provided by the other three, silence has been the chosen method to intimate it. Though mostly focused on the Tractatus, the present dissertation, tendentially favourable to the spirit of the “New Wittgenstein”, is meant to serve as a kind of window, even if a tiny one, to the Philosophical Investigations as well.

Abstract:
There is a low percentage of First Nations students participating in senior high school sciences and pursuing the field of science. This thesis describes the development of a cross-cultural science and environmental education program using traditional Kwakwaka'wakw stories as a focus for exploration. Conversational interviews with elders, resource persons and cultural teachers provided invaluable interpretations of time honored stories, their place in Kwakwaka’wakw culture, how they were passed down from generations as teaching stories, and how they tied Aboriginal students to the land and to each other. Lessons were pilot tested in grade 6/7 at the T'lisalagil'akw Band School in Alert Bay, BC. Observations and a range of evaluative techniques all combined to show that the students understood the Traditional Ecological Knowledge of the people, they understood a range of western science concepts, they practiced mayaxala (respect for the people and land), and they understood what it means to be Kwakwaka'wakw.

Wicks, Adam Joseph. "Coastal Storm Surge Identification, Classification, and Evaluation at Red Dog Dock, Alaska, 2004-2014." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/6020.

Full text
Abstract:
The southern Chukchi and Bering Sea region regularly experiences powerful storms that bring high winds that cause positive and negative water level set-up (storm surges) events. Positive set-up events can cause coastal inundation, sometimes extending far inland for low-relief locations, and negative set-up events can be problematic for shallow-draft marine equipment, such as barges. A ten year record (2004-2014) of water level data is available from a NOAA tide gauging station situated at the Teck Alaska Inc. Red Dog Mine Port Facility located to the north of the Bering Strait on the southwest Chukchi Sea coast. In this thesis these data are used to develop a database of water level set-up (storm surge) events using a novel identification methodology; by adapting fundamental wind storm identification concepts used by Atkinson (2005) and applying them to a water level dataset. The surge event database is then analyzed to identify primary types of events, to derive seasonal patterns and frequencies of occurrence, and to determine likely atmospheric driving mechanisms. There were 44 surge events identified – 21 positive, 23 negative – that tended to occur during the months of November, December, and January; none were recorded in the months May through August. The event typing work suggested four distinct surge patterns. Analysis of weather drivers, performed through visual interpretation of the temporal shape/form of the events and via use of an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis, suggested favoured locations for storm systems – the far eastern Chukotka Peninsula for positive set up events (west of Red Dog Dock), and the Alaska Peninsula for negative set ups (south of Red Dog Dock). A storm system situated to the west of the port generates southwest winds that drive positive set-up events, and a storm situated to the south generates easterly winds that drive negative set-up events. The sea level pressure weather patterns for positive set-up surge events are much stronger and shorter lived than for negative set-up events. This work has established an improved understanding of seasonal storm surge for the region and offers a potential basis for the improved forecasting of both positive and negative set-up surge events in the future.

Agarwal, Sudhir. "Performance analysis of peer-to-peer botnets using "The Storm Botnet" as an exemplar." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/2689.

Full text
Abstract:
Among malicious codes like computer viruses and worms, botnets have attracted a significant attention and have been one of the biggest threats on the Internet. Botnets have evolved to incorporate peer-to-peer communications for the purpose of propagating instructions to large numbers of computers (also known as bot) under the botmaster's control. The impact of the botnet lies in its ability for a bot master to execute large scale attacks while remaining hidden as the true director of the attack. One such recently known botnet is the Storm botnet. Storm is based on the Overnet Distributed Hash Table (DHT) protocol which in turn is based on the Kademlia DHT protocol. Significant research has been done for determining its operational size, behaviour and mitigation approaches. In this research, the peer-to-peer behaviour of Storm is studied by simulating its actual packet level network behaviour. The packet level simulator is developed via the simulation framework OMNET++ to determine the impact of design parameters on botnets performance and resilience. Parameters such as botnet size, peer list size, the number of bot masters and the key propagation time have been explored. Furthermore, two mitigation strategies are considered: a) random removal strategy (disinfection strategy), that removes selected bots randomly from the botnet; b) Sybil disruption strategy, that introduces fake bots into the botnet with the task of propagating Sybil values into the botnet to disrupt the communication channels between the controllers and the compromised machines. The simulation studies demonstrate that Sybil disruption strategies outperform random removal strategies. The simulation results also indicate that random removal strategies are not even effective for a small sized networks. The results of the simulation studies are particularly applicable to the Storm botnet but these results also provide insights that can be applied to peer-to-peer based botnets in general.

Pingree-Shippee, Katherine. "Seasonal predictability of North American coastal extratropical storm activity during the cold months." Thesis, 2018. https://dspace.library.uvic.ca//handle/1828/9324.

Full text
Abstract:
Extratropical cyclones (ETCs) are major features of the weather in the mid- and high-latitudes and are often associated with hazardous conditions such as heavy precipitation, high winds, blizzard conditions, and flooding. Additionally, severe coastal damage and major local impacts, including inundation and erosion, can result from high waves and storm surge due to cyclone interaction with the ocean. Consequently, ETCs can have serious detrimental socio-economic impacts. The west and east coasts of North America are strongly influenced by ETC storm activity. These coastal regions are also host to many land-based, coastal, and maritime socio-economic sectors, all of which can experience strong adverse impacts from extratropical storm activity. Society would therefore benefit if variations in ETC storm activity could be predicted skilfully for the upcoming season. Skilful prediction would enable affected sectors to better anticipate, prepare for, manage, and respond to variations in storm activity and the associated risks. The overall objective of this dissertation is to determine the seasonal predictability of North American coastal extratropical storm activity during the cold months (3-month rolling seasons – OND, NDJ, DJF, JFM – during which storm activity is most frequent and intense) using Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Canadian Seasonal to Interannual Prediction System (CanSIPS). This dissertation describes research focused on three themes: 1.) reanalysis representation of North American coastal storm activity, 2.) potential predictability of storm activity and climate signal-storm activity relationships for the North American coastal regions, and 3.) seasonal prediction of storm activity in CanSIPS. Research Theme 1 evaluates six global reanalysis datasets to determine which best reproduces observed storm activity in the North American coastal regions, annually and seasonally, during the 1979-2010 time period using single-station surface pressure-based proxies; ERA-Interim is found to perform best overall. Research Theme 2, using ERA-Interim, investigates the potential predictability of extratropical storm activity (represented by mean sea level pressure [MSLP], absolute pressure tendency, and 10-m wind speed) during the 1979-2015 time period using analysis of variance. The detected potential predictability provides observation-based evidence showing that it may be possible to predict storm activity on the seasonal timescale. Additionally, using composite analysis, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and North Atlantic Oscillation are identified as possible sources of predictability in the North American coastal regions. Research Theme 2 provides a basis upon which seasonal forecasting of extratropical storm activity can be developed. Research Theme 3 investigates the seasonal prediction of North American coastal storm activity using the CanSIPS multi-model ensemble mean hindcasts (1981-2010). Quantitative deterministic, categorical deterministic, and categorical probabilistic forecasts are constructed using the three equiprobable category framework (below-, near-, and above-normal conditions) and the parametric Gaussian method for determining probabilities. These forecasts are then evaluated against ERA-Interim using the correlation skill score, percent correct score, and Brier skill score to determine forecast skill. Baseline forecast skill is found for the seasonal forecasts of all three storm activity proxies, with MSLP forecasts found to be most skilful and 10-m wind speed forecasts the least skilful. Skilful seasonal forecasting of North American coastal extratropical storm activity is, therefore, possible in CanSIPS.
