Full textThe research deals with educators’ formative processes. In specific, how youth workers’ existential orientation takes shape and which consistent methodological declination these actors find in educational practice. Moving from a phenomenological approach, in the first part, the study focuses on methodological problems. In the second part, the research investigates some authors (important educationalists and psychiatrists) to reconstruct, through their writings, their meaning horizons. At least the study detects professional and personal experiences of an educators’ sample to identify revealing passages about their existential processes.

Full textEconomic, social and cultural transformations of these times have produced ambivalent results while giving rise to a newfound and widespread form of distress where economic, social and relational fragility and urban suffering intertwine (Saraceno, 2010): this grey area of distress (Iori and Rampazi, 2008; Tramma, 2015) does not exceed standard thresholds of overt malaise that would place it within the traditional boundaries regarding severe marginality and exclusion – areas often touched upon by educational services and policies. The elements that contributed to the spread of social vulnerability (Ranci, 2002) – including the precariousness of living and working conditions, the weakening of the systems in place offering social protection and the erosion of the social fabric – have played a role in altering some traits of contemporary poverty: the concept of new poverty aims to account for new elements of a population dealing with uncertain borders, grey poverty (Dovis and Saraceno, 2011), meaning that those who were not previously considered at risk of poverty are now implicated: a risk related to events increasingly frequent and increasingly linked to those paths of life seen as “normal”. The pedagogical research on the educational implications of impoverishment processes focuses, through biographical methods (Merril & West, 2012), on the life stories and educational biographies of fifteen men and women who have recently become impoverished. The theoretical framework concerning social pedagogy (Tramma, 2010) has directed the exploration of these biographical trajectories in and around both formal and informal educational dimensions: these contribute to falling into fragile situations, but also preventing and/or reducing their eventual impact. The pedagogical analysis focuses on the vulnerability areas around which life’s critical aspects are concentrated, and on the representations and meanings through which impoverished people live and rework their own story and condition, highlighting the key role of a contemporary educational climate. Such an educational climate promotes increasingly individualised and notably hyper-responsible representations of one’s own life and impoverishment, while at the same time hindering the critical understanding of one’s life path, losing focus on the dynamics of the present – something indispensable to promote with the subjects changes for the improvement of individual and collective living conditions. The transformative tension (Baldacci, 2001) as part of this pedagogical research aims to contribute to the pedagogical reflection on new poverty in order to identify theoretical and methodological orientations for educational actions able to promote fresh paths for subjects, both in terms of preventive interventions with people at risk of poverty, and in terms of paths out of poverty.

Full textThe thesis aims to investigate the relationship between the findings of scientific research in the field of history, with particular reference to the theme of the formation of the Italian regional states in the late Middle Ages, and their teaching in secondary schools. In the part dedicated to the theoretical framework, it underlines the increasingly pressing need for quality teaching and learning of history in today's society, based on a sense of active democratic participation and on the development of critical thinking, despite the fact that official ministerial documents do not always devote due importance to the subject. In addition, recent results obtained through a questionnaire administered to university students seem to confirm didactics still linked to traditional practice. In this sense, therefore, it is necessary to refound and refocus the importance of history by deepening the specific vocabulary and the basic epistemological premises of the discipline. Starting from these issues, the empirical framework analyzes the state of progress of recent scientific-academic research on the formation of the Italian regional states of the late Middle Ages; compares the subject in the main school textbooks adopted in the metropolitan area of Bologna (Italy); and, finally, analyzes the conceptions on history, medieval history and the use of the textbook by secondary school history teachers thanks to the answers derived from the administration of a questionnaire on teaching practice. The results obtained will make it possible to detect possible gaps between academic research and the secondary teaching of history, medieval history, and the formation of regional states, sometimes underlining the increasingly urgent need for an integrated in-service training of teachers.

Full textThe purpose of the dissertation “Development and practice of Hector Berlioz’s orchestral thought. Poetical features and sound strategies” is to investigate the main traits of Berlioz’s thinking about orchestra by reconsidering the elements of his early education. In particular, the notions acquired from his composition teachers Le Sueur and Reicha and from the medicine courses he briefly attended are examined with a renovated approach, in the light of new lines of study explored by musicology in recent years. Berlioz’s reviews are also analyzed, in the search of elements useful to understand his music through the arguments addressed to others’ music. The dissertation also examines the itinerary of theoretic music literature which, from an initial approach connoted by practice as it was typical in the 18th century, reaches with Berlioz’s treaty a strong poetical connotation of instrumental and orchestral resources. The second part of the dissertation deals with some of Berlioz’s works and with some general issues related to his way of writing for the orchestra, especially in relation to other musical parameters. In the whole discussion, sensible attention is put on the relation between technical and poetical issues, suggesting a quite renovated approach.

Full textThis research discusses the importance of the analysis of the history of political thought (in both Western as well as non-Western thought forums) for the theory of the capabilities approach as founded and theorised by Amartya Sen (economist at the Harvard University) and Martha Nussbaum (philosopher of law at the University of Chicago). It will examine the impact of the history of political theory in Sen’s work which has been strongly influenced by the research of a close alliance between economics and ethics, but this contribution will also examine the most important fields of research of Nussbaum’s own version of the approach that finds its origins in the Ancient Greek and Roman political thought and especially in Aristotle’s ethical and political system. Ideas and institutions regarding education and lifelong learning philosophy have been chosen as a “prism” in order to study the three Western pillars of political theory which are mostly considered by Sen and Nussbaum and in particular: the emergence of the lexicon of positive and social rights; the debate around the nature of citizenship in the contractualist theory and the very debate around educational policies. Furthermore, this work aims to analyse Sen’s and Nussbaum’s endeavour to overcome the culturalist and essentialist conceptions championed especially in the contemporary political thought by considering the importance of non-Western legacies and heritage of political argumentation and reflection about politics in India’s political philosophy both in the ancient (Kautylia and Ashoka) and contemporary (Gandhi and Tagore) thought. Among these contemporary theories in political philosophy, the normative critique of Sen and Nussbaum faces especially multiculturalism, communitarianism, neorealism as well as the theory of “asian values” by remembering the very existence of political reflection in arenas of thought “other” than the West.

Full textThe “School for the special aids and assistants for disabled children”, opened in 1926 at the Catholic University of Milan by father Agostino Gemelli, was one of the very first in Italy to set up about disabled children teacher training. This School gives evidence of Gemelli’s work in the special education area and also represents the Italian path toward scholastic inclusion for disabled persons. The interest of Gemelli, one of the most famous psychologists in the XX Century Italian framework, towards disability reflects how the contemporary Catholic world cared about interventions for the weakest not only driven by a charity feeling but based on scientific studies. Moreover, the study highlights how teacher training has changed from the Twenties to the Seventies of the last Century, following the different way of looking at disabled children, from isolation in special schools to inclusion in common classes. The thesis contributes to improve Italian studies in the field of the history of special education, a subject that has, for the most part, to be written. The research is carried out through archival investigations with the purpose of shedding light on teachers, users, materials and textbooks of the School, since its origin until the Seventies.

Full textThe dissertation provides an in-depth analysis of the scholarship of Stanley Hauerwas, a very prominent figure in the American academy whose body of work is widely read in many countries. By providing a close reading of Hauerwas’ entire corpus, the dissertation aims at discussing the contested relationship between Christianity and liberalism. It does so first, by focusing on the philosophical presuppositions that shape Hauerwas’ overall argument. Second, it reflects on the main liberal commitments and institutions and their relationship with Christianity. Third, it describes Hauerwas’ ethical proposal and its bearings on the political commitments that the church and Christians ought to have. Following the breadth of Hauerwas’ work, the dissertation deals with a great number of philosophers, political theorists, and theologians, spanning from the writings of Aristotle and Aquinas, to the philosophy of language of McCabe, Murdoch, and Wittgenstein, to the ethical reflections of Kovesi, Anscombe and MacIntyre, and to the political theory of Rawls, Stout, and Coles. Through his stress on the role of virtues and moral formation, and by emphasizing the importance that the church’s tradition, language, and practices have in shaping the imagination and lives of Christians, Hauerwas gives a constructive and fruitful description of what a genuine Christian politics looks like and helps us navigate the complex world of today.
