Pur permettendo al lettore di notare alcune continuitŕ con la nostra epoca, il testo sostiene e argomenta una sostanziale differenza tra la nostra societŕ e quella medievale. Tale differenza emerge soprattutto guardando i diversi modi di intendere e gestire la dimensione economica. Lo studio storico, tra le righe, offre inoltre interessanti spunti di riflessione di tipo epistemologico, pedagogico e linguistico.

The essay brings together the results of two researches carried out within the project: Limen, Languages of Notarial Mediation between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, presented in July 2019 at the Extraordinary Call for Interdepartmental Projects of the University of Milan and considered worthy of funding with the recognition of the Seal of excellence in 2020. Thus the medieval notary’s activity emerges from the examination of testimonial depositions, mortis causa deeds and contracts of writing and discipleship: the notary was protagonist of the institutional, social and economic life of the medieval municipality and also a spiritual and family mediator in his customers’ most intimate and personal life.

L’articolo recensisce e discute le ragioni, i contenuti e le prospettive storiografiche di tre volumi recentemente pubblicati su piante, boschi e paesaggi agrari e forestali della Penisola italiana nel basso Medioevo e nella prima età moderna. Con approcci diversi, i tre volumi propongono con consapevolezza il problema del rapporto fra l’uomo e l’ambiente, fra economia ed ecologia, fra risorse e produzione come chiave interpretativa unitaria della storia delle campagne italiane e delle società che le abitarono.The article analyses the motivations, the contents and the historiographical perspectives of three recently published volumes about trees, woods and rural landscape in the late medieval and early modern Italy. Each volume intentionally places at the centre of its analysis the relation between man and environment, economy and ecology, resources and production: throughout different approach this relation is suggested as the key factor to re-interpret the rural history of preindustrial Italy.

Abstract:
This work concerns a research about Pavia, an important centre in the north-west of Italy, and focuses mainly on economic aspects and social relations as well as on their impact on communal institutions. This allowed to highlight the dynamics and strategies through which society was changing, adapting its institution and economic policy to face up to the new economic climate. Indeed, the period considered in the research, the second half of the XIII century, has been interpreted by the historiography about Italian city-states, as a time of deep change or "crisis" that led to profound transformations in the city’s government and in economic and social relations. In light of the current revision of the problem, this work suggests a survey on the city of Pavia, examined from multiple points of view on the basis of a broad investigation, mostly on unpublished documents, in order to reconsider and update the available bibliography. Faced with a difficult political and economic situation, the city tried to respond to it by intensifying the exploitation of the resources of its contado, structuring its production profile and defending its commercial spaces, in a social context still open and dynamic. The analysis took into account developments in urban economy, especially in the key sectors of agricultural production, industry and commerce, within wider transformations that invested cities and their surrounding countryside in Northern Italy in the same period, to check how political tensions and economic trend influenced society causing a closure in the long period.

La tesi si propone di ricostruire una geografia dell'assistenzialismo in relazione all'attività di tipo creditizio prestata, tra la fine del Medioevo e il 1713, dai Monti di Pietà e frumentari che operarono all'interno di località comprese in un ampio quadrante territoriale di frontiera, che comprende gran parte del Piemonte Orientale, il Canavese, parte della Provincia di Asti e la Lomellina. Nello specifico, costituiscono oggetto di indagine i Monti di Pietà eretti in Vercelli, Biella, Crescentino, Sordevolo, Novara, Arona, Borgomanero, Orta San Giulio, Omegna, Ivrea, Casale Monferrato, Trino, Felizzano, Alessandria e Vigevano e i Monti frumentari istituiti in Prato Sesia, Rosignano Monferrato, Altavilla Monferrato, Moncalvo, Tonco, Castelspina, Predosa, Castellazzo Bormida, Castelferro, Quargnento, Zeme, Ottobiano, Tromello e Borgo San Martino, dei quali vengono analizzate, attraverso l'adozione di una narrazione cronologica di tipo critico, le vicende istitutive e operative, anche in chiave comparatistica. Particolare attenzione viene dedicata alle seguenti tematiche: le misure di assistenzialismo e di soccorso in favore dei poveri adottate in ambito urbano; il ruolo svolto dalla predicazione minoritica nella promozione . S dei Monti di Pietà tra Piemonte e Lombardia nella seconda metà del XV secolo, specialmente in chiave di contrasto alla povertà e all'usura; i rapporti intrattenuti dalle autorità centrali e dalle autorità cittadine con gli ebrei da un lato e con i Monti di Pietà dall'altro; le relazioni instauratesi tra i banchi feneratizi israelitici e i Monti di Pietà e il ruolo da essi ricoperto nell'ambito del mercato del credito e del prestito su pegno; il controllo esercitato dalla Chiesa sull'operato dei Monti in forza della normativa emanata nel contesto della Controriforma; l'impatto delle vicende belliche, delle fasi congiunturali e delle malversazioni sulla governance dei Monti, sull'attività prestata dai medesimi e sulla custodia dei pegni.

Abstract:
Before the creation of the Monti di Pietà at the end of the Middle Ages, consumer credit on pawn was customarily supplied by private bankers. Although most of them were Jewish, in some European areas also Christian people were fulfilling this role. In territories as Savoy, the Rhine Valley and the Low Countries, they were usually known as Lombards. The Lombards active in the Low Countries between ca. 1280 and 1618 came principally from the cities of Asti and Chieri. However a very studied topic, there still was the need to reach a better understanding about the manners they used for integrating in a foreign society; moreover, their relationships with other foreign communities also still deserved a more thorough study. Hence, the aim of this work was to show the impact of the Lombards (especially those from Chieri active in the Low Countries in the second half of the XV century), and of their activities, on the socio-economic context of the hosting societies. Therefore, the dissertation has been divided into three major sections each touching some general research fields (institutional, social, economic and financial). The first chapter revolves around the institutional aspects of the Lombards' presence in the Late-Medieval Low Countries: the focus has then been put on the development of a Nazione. It was possible to show the peculiarities of this institution when compared with those of other similar, but more powerful, organizations established in order to defend the rights of some other Italian merchants communities active in the same area. The core of the second chapter was the analysis of the “networks” created by the Lombards at home and abroad. Regarding the first point, it emerges that the family still had a pivotal role in the running of the banchi abroad. Moreover, it was also possible to mark clear differences between the matrimonial strategies of the Lombards from Asti and those from Chieri. Abroad the Lombards had connections with people from Antwerp as well as with some other Italian merchants bankers (the Borromei family and some Genoeses). The third and fourth chapter deal with the financial activities of the Lombards. First of all, it has been noticed that the assets' management of a Lombard was organized following a rational accounting system. Moreover, the analysis of some shareholder's agreement has shown that the structure of the companies which managed the banchi resembled more those of the Tuscan enterprises rather than the very informal construction of the Genoese commenda. The daily routine of a casana has been considered as well: in this sight it was possible to compare pawnbroking with other credit forms also supplied by the Lombards. Some characteristics of the Lombards pawnbroking has been thoroughly scrutinized: as a consequence, it was possible to broaden the analysis noticing that, in its fundamentals, pawnbroking remains unvaried up till today. Finally, the scrutiny of more than thousand loans on personal security (not on pawns) granted by the Lombards in Kortrijk enables to consider them as a support for the local wool industry The last chapter has proposed a new interpretation regarding the already noticed decrease in the number of the banchi ran by Lombards in the Low Countries at the end of the XV century. While the traditional historiography considered as crucial some financial and economic changes occurred in the Low Countries, in this dissertation the focus has been put rather on the transformations occurred in the same period in Chieri and in subalpine area: development of a local textile industry, the ending of a long urbanization process of the families more active abroad and the progressive bureaucratization of the Savoy's state.
Prima della creazione del Monti di Pietà alla fine dell'epoca medievale, il credito su pegno era generalmente un settore monopolizzato da banchieri privati: la maggior parte di essi erano ebrei. Tuttavia, in alcune aree dell'Europa occidentale (come la Savoia, la valle del Reno e i Paesi Bassi), tale ruolo veniva ricoperto anche da dei cristiani, generalmente conosciuti con il nome di Lombardi. Pur essendo un argomento molto studiato, i Lombardi, soprattuto quelli provenienti da Chieri attivi per tutto il corso del Quattrocento nei Paesi Bassi, dovevano ancora essere portati in rapporto non solo con la società che li circondava ma anche con gli altri mercanti stranieri attivi nella stessa zona (soprattutto toscani e genovesi). Per farlo, e per dimostrare inoltre che le attività dei Lombardi interessavano diversi aspetti della vita economica e sociale delle società che li ospitavano, la tesi è stata divisa in tre grandi parti che sono andate a toccare alcuni campi d'indagine generali: il quadro istituzionale, quello sociale e quello economico-finanziario. Nel primo capitolo della tesi si è messo in evidenza come i Lombardi potessero anch'essi dare vita ad una istituzione (una nazione) che ne difendesse i diritti e gli spazi conquistati. Si sono così mostrate le peculiarità della nazione piemontese rispetto a quelle, ben più potenti, formate da toscani, genovesi e veneziani: nessun riconoscimento da parte dello stato d'origine, carattere effimero, attribuzioni ridotte e scarsa capacità di controllo dell'accesso alle attività finanziarie o di regolazione della vita spirituale dei suoi membri. Nel secondo capitolo si sono analizzati più da vicino i legami sociali che in patria legavano i Lombardi astigiani e chieresi. Inoltre si è approfondita la tematica dei rapporti intrattenuti dai Lombardi con la popolazione di Anversa, con alcuni banchieri toscano-milanesi (i Borromei) ed infine con i genovesi. In tal modo è stato possibile superare definitivamente l'idea de rooveriana di netta divisione tra grandi mercanti e Lombardi. Il terzo e quarto capitolo sono stati dedicati all'analisi delle attività finanziarie dei Lombardi. Si è così messo in evidenza che la gestione del patrimonio privato di un Lombardo poteva essere delegata ad un sistema contabile razionale. Inoltre l'analisi approfondita di alcuni patti sociali ha permesso di avvicinare le società dei piemontesi più alle forme aziendali dei toscani che a quelle più informali della commenda genovese. Si sono poi ricostruiti nel dettaglio i modi di gestione quotidiani di una casana. Si è passati così ad analizzare più da vicino il credito concesso dai Lombardi mettendo a confronto il pegno con altre forme di credito elargite sempre dai piemontesi. Riguardo il primo aspetto si sono messi in evidenza alcune caratteristiche del credito elargito su pegno dai Lombardi presenti a Nivelles ed Anversa. L'analisi si è poi allargata arrivando a mostrare come le caratteristiche principali del pegno siano arrivate, praticamente immutate, fino ad oggi. Infine, l'analisi di più di mille prestiti non su pegno elargiti dai piemontesi nella città fiamminga di Kotrijk, ha permesso di notare come il credito Lombardo potesse servire anche da sostegno all'industria laniera. Infine, si è provato a dare un'interpretazione diversa rispetto a quella della storiografia tradizionale circa la riduzione nel numero delle casane gestite dai piemontesi nei Paesi Bassi alla fine del Quattrocento. Pur non negando che alcuni cambiamenti finanziari ed economici possano aver avuto il loro peso nella diminuzione del numero delle casane (iperinflazione, riduzione generalizzata del costo del denaro), l'accento è stato posto soprattutto sui mutamenti (sviluppo dell'industria tessile locale, definito inurbamento delle famiglie più attive all'estero e crescente burocratizzazione dello stato Sabaudo) che avevano interessato Chieri nello stesso periodo.

Abstract:
La predicazione religiosa, nelle sue molteplici sfumature, fornisce un tema di studio abbondantemente trattato dagli storici e dagli studiosi della letteratura rinascimentale. Elemento centrale per la comprensione dei processi sociali e religiosi del tardo medioevo, lo studio della predicazione è divenuto imprescindibile per gli studiosi interessati all'analisi del rapporto fra società laica e istituzioni religiose, ai conflitti fra spiritualità individuale e rispetto del dogma cristiano, alle multiformi espressioni della separazione sociale. La predicazione dei frati minori dell'Osservanza in particolare, assunse sempre più le caratteristiche di un discorso capace di toccare i più vari aspetti della vita sociale. Attraverso l'utilizzo di modelli retorici precisi e all'elaborazione di un complesso costrutto ideologico, gli osservanti furono in grado di costruire e demolire identità religiose e sociali, definire nuovi canoni di moralità e devianza, differenziare in modo nuovo i comportamenti leciti da quelli ritenuti illeciti e dannosi per il "bene comune". Sotto questi molteplici aspetti i bersagli principali degli osservanti furono gli ebrei, gli usurai e, generalmente, tutti coloro che si ponevano oltre i limiti della società cristiana. La tesi si propone di chiarire la portata del costrutto osservante a Venezia in un periodo compreso fra la fine del XIV secolo e il primo Cinquecento. Per farlo si sono seguite tre strade parallele: quella della storia religiosa, della storia economica e della storia politica della Serenissima. L'obiettivo è quello di chiarire se e come i tre elementi seppero fondersi all'interno della cornice ideologica osservante e dare vita alla prima forma istituzionalizzata di separazione sociale dell'occidente: il Ghetto.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is focused on the élite of Turin during the late Middle Ages, with particular regard to parental structures and their reproductive strategies. In fact, the deep changes occurred in the élite between 12th and 14th century are not only the result of the political decisions of the Dukes of Savoy and of the demographic crisis, but also the outcome of economic and social choices of the families. The research aims at showing how behaviours and events within parental groups have an effect on the political and social changes of the citizenship, taking into account residential patterns, economic strategies, inheritance models and financial investments. On the one hand, different combinations of these elements, in which inheritance patterns play an essential role, are crucial for the duration and success of parental groups; on the other hand, they have a significant impact on the political balances of the families and the élite.

Abstract:
La ricerca offre informazioni in merito agli ambiti economici e fiscali delle istituzioni milanesi (fine XII - XIII secolo). Il lavoro si fonda su un'indagine documentaria minuziosa e considerevole dal punto di vista quantitativo. Il primo capitolo è dedicato alla storiografia economico-finanziaria e fiscale. Il secondo capitolo presenta il materiale documentario affrontando i problemi relativi all'evoluzione delle carte nei secoli VIII-XIII. Il capitolo terzo ricostruisce le modalità di gestione economico-finanziarie del patrimonio della canonica di S. Ambrogio. Il quarto capitolo analizza i rapporti intercorsi tra Chiesa romana e Comune di Milano entrando nel merito delle problematiche relative alla libertas ecclesiae e alla tassazione degli enti ecclesiastici, in particolar modo nel momento dell'introduzione dell'estimo comunale. Il quinto capitolo è dedicato alla tassazione applicata sugli enti ecclesiastici da Chiesa ambrosiana, Chiesa romana e Comune di Milano. Si sono così comprese le necessità finanziarie ecclesiastiche e civili e le differenti destinazioni dei contributi versati alla Chiesa o al Comune. Il capitolo sesto è dedicato all'evoluzione dell'apparato amministrativo-burocratico comunale seguito all'introduzione di nuovi strumenti di riscossione delle imposte. Nel settimo e ultimo capitolo si analizzano alcuni strumenti, quaderni o registri di imbreviature, a disposizione dei notai che prestavano servizio presso enti ecclesiastici e Comune.
The search offer an information about economic and fiscal field of Milan institutions (XII - XIII century). The first chapter is dedicated to the economic-financial and fiscal historiography. The second chapter introduces the documentary material facing the problems relative to the evolution of the papers in the course of the VIII-XIII centuries. The third chapter reconstructs the economic-financial management modalities of the patrimony of the presbytery of S. Ambrogio. The fourth chapter analyzes the relationships elapsed between Roman Church and municipality of Milan regarding the problems relative to the libertas ecclesiae and to the taxation of the ecclesiastical organizations in the moment of the introduction of municipal valuation. Fifth chapter is dedicated to the taxation applied on the ecclesiastical organizations from Milan Church, Roman Church and municipality of Milan. Therefore the financial and civil ecclesiastical necessities and the different destinations of the contributions paid to the Church or the municipality have been comprised. The sixth chapter is dedicated to the evolution of the administrative-bureaucratic municipal machine in consequence of the introduction of new instruments of tax collection. In the seventh chapter are analyzed some instruments, notebooks or registries of imbreviature available to the notary who served ecclesiastical organizations and municipality.

La religione è senza dubbio il fenomeno culturale più importante nella storia del mondo. Essa era onnipresente nella vita quotidiana medievale e della prima età moderna. In tutte le epoche e tutte le culture, essa è stata condizionata dall’economia; per altro verso ha esercitato una profonda influenza non solo sulle teorie, ma anche sulla pratica, le consuetudini, le norme, i consumi, gli strumenti e in genere sulla complessiva organizzazione economica. Gli stessi flussi migratori, che hanno prodotto effetti e trasformazioni significative nell’assetto economico europeo sono stati in molti casi collegati a problematiche di tipo religioso. Il volume che raccoglie gli atti della Settimana di Studi datiniana esplora attraverso 44 contributi scientifici questa relazione dinamica e complessa, che coinvolse le tre principali religioni europee: Cristianesimo, Giudaismo ed Islamismo, ma anche le esperienze particolari all’interno di ogni confessione. Esse infatti conobbero, in contesti diversi, diverse interpretazioni e divergenti espressioni dogmatiche e dottrinali, cui corrisposero significative differenze nella evoluzione degli strumenti e dei rapporti economici europei e del Mediterraneo, a partire dall’inizio del secondo millennio.

Abstract:
In medieval Iceland, apparently alone among the North Atlantic Norse colonies, cloth evolved into a highly standardized form of currency within a broader-based commodity-money system imported from Norway. Within the Icelandic economy, the production of currency cloth (vaðmál or vöruvaðmál) was legally regulated and was used within Iceland to pay debts, taxes, and tithes. This chapter presents the first detailed analyses of over 1,000 archaeological textiles stored in Icelandic museum collections. The way in which this ‘legal cloth’ was woven and constructed provides insights into the emergence of standardized cloth currency and its use across Iceland. Analyses challenge the assumption that organic forms of commodity-currency are unavailable to archaeologists studying early economic systems. Cloth currency, produced chiefly by women, emerged around the end of the Viking Age. It was central to the Icelandic economy until the mid 1500s, after which its role progressively declined as Iceland entered into the increasingly globalized trade networks of the early modern industrialized world.

Abstract:
An education for health begins by forming the imaginations and affections of students so that rather than desiring upward mobility, they can imagine healthy, placed lives. The introduction starts with a reading of Hannah Coulter, whose title character describes her fear that she has failed to tell the right stories to her children, thus inadvertently contributing to their desire for upward mobility at the cost of healthy communities. Because our affections have such far-reaching influence—shaping the questions we ask and the ways we arrange knowledge—Berry focuses on the conflicting internal desires termed “boomer” and “sticker” and how we should work to rightly order these desires. The contrast between boomers and stickers—the different desires they have, the different stories they tell, the different questions they ask, the different economies they participate in, and the contrasting models of the university they propose—elucidates the contrast between the educational system we have now and an education for health: the boomer wants to isolate knowledge from its origins in order to maximize its utility and profitability, whereas the sticker values a medieval, rooted kind of learning whose branches connect as much as possible. Thus, the way we organize and order knowledge stems from the kinds of questions we ask, which in turn arise from the orientation of our desires.
