Full textAmong the most influential revolutions of the 20th century historiography - from the Annales to the return to narrative history, through the key concepts of microhistory and biographical turn – while seeking for the “black box of schooling”, the recent international and national historical-educational researches have turned their attention to the theory of “school as a living reality”. Notably, the observational study of the classroom empirical culture as well as of the school material culture has received significant contributions from the focus on the teaching profession, whose multiple dimensions have also been investigated from a biographic point of view. Within this theorethical framework, this work attempts to portray the life of Cesare Malservisi as primary school teacher, librarian, dialect songwriter and intellectual during the Postwar years in Bologna. Starting from the analysis of the reference coeval literature, the primary focus of this research is to investigate the family personal archive whose sources shift from Cesare Malservisi’s career, private life, professional activity to the school material culture. For instance, while aiming to build a “plural biography”, sources have been classified, analyzed, intertwined and integrated with interviews conducted with witnesses who have personally met Cesare Malservisi. The picture that emerges from this study confirms the complexity of Malservisi’s teacher role whose professional development coexist with his engagement to society, and parallely explores the local pedagogic and teaching scene, with special attention to the intense socio-political and educational ferment of the Postwar years in Bologna, a subject that has not yet been thoroughly investigated.

Full textThis research focuses on the representation of the Arabic-Islamic culture in the history textbooks of the first grade secondary school. The fact that the world today is characterized, more than ever, by continuous and inevitable encounters among people from different backgrounds requires a strong commitment to promote peaceful intercultural relations. For this purpose, it is believed that the contents of textbooks have an important role. Hence, the goal is to verify if the textbooks convey an effective education to know and to respect other cultures and religions, to promote intercultural dialogue; and to overcome ethnocentrism, stereotypes and prejudices. So, it was necessary to verify – in the sample of textbooks examined – the presence o any recurring prejudices, stereotypes and ethnocentric perspectives that can be constructed, consolidated, repeated and transmitted, consciously or unconsciously, through statements or images that illustrate the Arabic-Islamic culture. The first part of the thesis, the theoretical one, is dedicated to two themes: the first theme concerns the relationship between East and West and the representation of the others and the second theme concerns the status of Muslim women between stereotypes and reality. The second part, the empirical one, is dedicated to the qualitative content analysis of history textbooks. The analysis results show clear interest, by the authors and editors of the textbooks, for the theme of Arabic-Islamic culture. In spite of that, the texts may contain, although to different extents, stereotypes, generalizations and partial, inaccurate or incorrect information about the Arabic-Islamic culture and about Arabs or Muslims.

Full textThe textbook, in its dual aspect of educational support and publishing and social product, is a precious source to reconstruct educational, teaching, cultural and political history from the second half of the eighteenth century to the first decades of the twentieth century. This thesis aims to underline the educational and teaching value of school literature and the role played by school in the education of Italian children through a quantitative and a qualitative analysis of the main reading textbooks published in Lombardy between the nineteenth and the twentyth centuries. After a general overview of the editorial school production of the Italian situation, the research focus on the contents, the iconography and linguistic form of 65 reading textbooks, adopted nationally in the elementary schools and published in the decades after the unification (1871-1923) by important Lombard publishers, such as Agnelli, Risveglio Educativo, Trevisini and Vallardi.

Full textThe “School for the special aids and assistants for disabled children”, opened in 1926 at the Catholic University of Milan by father Agostino Gemelli, was one of the very first in Italy to set up about disabled children teacher training. This School gives evidence of Gemelli’s work in the special education area and also represents the Italian path toward scholastic inclusion for disabled persons. The interest of Gemelli, one of the most famous psychologists in the XX Century Italian framework, towards disability reflects how the contemporary Catholic world cared about interventions for the weakest not only driven by a charity feeling but based on scientific studies. Moreover, the study highlights how teacher training has changed from the Twenties to the Seventies of the last Century, following the different way of looking at disabled children, from isolation in special schools to inclusion in common classes. The thesis contributes to improve Italian studies in the field of the history of special education, a subject that has, for the most part, to be written. The research is carried out through archival investigations with the purpose of shedding light on teachers, users, materials and textbooks of the School, since its origin until the Seventies.

Full textThe thesis aims to reconstruct, enhancing the historical-legal context of the time, the contribution of Agostino Gemelli to the development of criminal law. In this respect, the research begins from the end of the nineteenth century, following Gemelli during his “positivist” training at the University of Pavia and, simultaneously, the evolution of coeval criminal law scolarship, committed to face the demands for change initially conveyed by criminal anthropology, and later collected by the Positive School of Enrico Ferri. Moving from the stalemate arisen at the beginning of the last century between the latter and the forces “of tradition”, the investigation deals with Gemelli’s critique of the positivists’ theories, carried out on both the anthropological and the legal field. The analysis of this pars destruens is followed by an evaluation of Gemelli’s pars costruens – the program for a Catholic criminal law presented at the Social Weeks of 1924 – and of its match to the principles informing the criminal law reform developed by the Technical-juridical School. Particular attention is devoted to the considerations expressed by the author, in light of the notion of “personality of the criminal”, on the provisions of the Rocco Code, both during its preparation process and when it came into force.

Full textThe research focuses the role played by Adriano Bernareggi, priest in Milan, then bishop of Bergamo since 1932, in the renewal movement of ecclesiastical studies during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Trained at the Gregorian and Lateran Universities, in a climate marked by modernism and vatican reaction, Bernareggi taught at the seminary of Milan, from 1909 to 1932, and at the Catholic University, from 1922 to 1926. In these sites, he strove to give a modern response - not modernist – to the spiritual anxiety of modern man, through a new religious language, able to enhance Church history and, especially, its liturgy. Particular attention has been paid to: the teaching, including the attempt to promote an update of the Ratio Studiorum of the Theological Faculty, following lines that anticipated Deus Scientiarum Dominus; the direction of the magazine “La Scuola Cattolica”, that he attempted to transform in a national periodic of sacred sciences, to regenerate religious studies through the application of an historical perspective and critical-philological research method; the participation in the liturgical and artistic movement in Milan, looking to french teachings and Maria Laach, especially to rediscovery the initiation value of rites; the prevostship at St. Vittore al Corpo, a laboratory of a new “liturgical practice”; the role in the debate on the Roman Question and Conciliation.

Full textDuring the nineteenth century in France, the education through classical studies of the elite meant to play the highest professional roles became increasingly anachronistic and the school system was the main target of many debates and reforming processes. These attempts of changing teaching methods and subjects increased even further after the battle of Sedan. At the end of the century, the persistence of a stationary culture and of an educational system linked to the humanistic tradition clashed with the democratisation of the society, the scientific progress and the economic development and also with the rush to modernise this culture. The aim of this research is to trace the main cultural, historical and economic factors that distinguished the history of French education, while analysing the long and various changes of classical humanities during the establishment of French secondary school, which was the more conservative institution of the nineteenth century.

Full textThe subject of this thesis is the schools for emigrant adults created in Italy during the liberal era. Studying them entails bringing back to light documentation overlooked until now: acts of municipal administrations, ministerial documents, in addition to brochures and articles written by teachers, educators and politicians. Conducted using first-hand archival and library materials, the research reveals the presence of a vast network of educational courses for emigrants promoted by various institutions (the Emigration Commission, the Ministry of Public Instruction, and Humanitarian Organizations) from the Giolittian era onward until the 1920s. This system of education and instruction, pervasive in areas with high rates of emigration, highlights the regulatory framework and the pedagogical and educational orientation, which, as we have endeavored to show, were related to the cultural and political perspectives of the time.

Full textThe research aims to investigate the relationships that Ellen Key had with the founders of the new schools in Europe at the turn of the twentieth century and the contribution she offered to their dissemination. At the beginning of the twentieth century Ellen Key was at the center of the pedagogical and feminist debate, not only in Sweden but throughout Central Europe, and also in Italy, where she made long stays (in 1900-1901 and in 1906-1908). The Swedish pedagogue was an intellectual who strenuously supported the speech and press freedom. She promoted a Charter of children's rights and some social policies for the protection of motherhood and the mother-child relationship. At the turn of the twentieth century a series of innovative pedagogical experiments emerged. They started from the Abbotsholme school founded by Cecil Reddie in 1889, and spread in France with the foundation of the Ecole des Roches by Edmond Demolins, in Germany with the country home-schools (Landerziehungsheime) of Ilseburg, Haubinda and Bieberstein, founded by Hermann Lietz, the school community of Wickersdorf and the Paul Geheeb’s Odenwaldschule. Ellen Key related to these important pedagogical experiments and, thanks to her continuous movements, she visited some new schools. The research starts from the analysis of the manuscripts and correspondence of the Ellen Key collection, preserved at the Royal Library in Stockholm and of Ellen Key’s private library at Villa Strand. From the analysis of the documents it emerges how the Swedish writer assumed a role of mediator for the dissemination of the New Schools which in the early years of the twentieth century reached a high degree of diffusion.

Full textNanotechnologies are already part of everyday life and are indicated in HO2020 as fundamental key-enabling technologies for the scientific, economic and social development of EU. EU has indeed recommend the introduction of nanoscience and nanotechnology in high school curricula [1] since the beginning of the new millennium, due to their highly interdisciplinary character and also because they are particularly well-suited for effective hands-on activities [2]. One of the most relevant goal of nanoscience is to design and realize novel materials with peculiar properties, the so-called functional materials, by fine tuning their structure, chemical composition and morphology at the micro and nanoscale. Indeed, the microscopic characteristics of such materials strongly affect their macroscopic properties, often in highly surprising ways. Several functional materials are nowadays easily purchased and are used in the school labs to trigger pupils’ curiosity and interest, exploiting the so-called wow-effect. The Unimore Nanolab project [3] goes beyond this approach, designing fully quantitative experiments based on functional materials, which are aimed at introducing selected key-concepts (“big-ideas”) in nanoscience. In this PhD thesis work, as a part of the Nanolab project, I designed and test a few new teaching learning sequences (TLS), developing a novel educational approach to experimental activities, inspired by ISLE (Investigative Science Learning Environment)[4] and Instructional 5E models[5]. Tribology, i.e. the study of friction, wear and adhesion phenomena, is an extremely active field of research of paramount technological relevance. Achieving a comprehensive understanding of these phenomena at the nano- and meso-scale is currently an open issue. As far as education is concerned, friction has been considered a trivial topic which deserved little attention in traditional high-school curricula. In fact, it actually provides an appealing way to introduce fundamental interdisciplinary concepts, such as atomic and molecular interactions and their key role in determining the behaviour and properties of two surfaces in intimate contact [6-7]. In this work, I designed a TLS on friction and wetting, which inquires the properties of the Gecko Tape ®, a micro-structured adhesive, bio-inspired by the gecko feet. The TLS aims to convey one of nanoscience Big Ideas, i.e. Structure is function and underlying the strict connections between physics and chemistry. The teaching sequence is intended to mimic the different steps of a true scientific research, including results dissemination and discussion. This TLS has been validated with a few groups of students, with different backgrounds and levels of involvement, and also tested in a peer education set with very good results. A second TLS, addressing the big ideas "Tools and Instrumentation" was also designed, exploiting Gecko Tape® as a flexible and deformable diffraction grating. This activity is part of a sequence regarding optics and is also proposed in a flipped-classroom approach. All the designed educational materials, including films and video tutorials, are available on-line and have been also used in in-service teachers training activities. 1. I. Malsch; Nanotech. Full textThe rise of women as teaching professionals in Restoration Lombardy. In order to satisfy the large number of application requests from girls of the wealthiest classes, the Napoleonic government started, besides the well known Real colleges, a system of boarding school directed by laywomen, inspired by the model of the maisons d’éducation boarding schools which were already popular in France since the last decades of the 18th century. With the return of the Asburgos family in Lombardy ,those institutes increased as well as daily private schools for young girl directed by layteachers. As those private schools became popular pretty fast, the affirmation of the feminine public teaching was very slow. The big amount of women committed in this activity (more than 2200 from 1818 to 1848), the compulsoriness of examinations and to follow a standardized formative iter, shows how the role of the teacher, selected by exams and by a specific formative training, didn't start in Italy with the unification ,but -especially in the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia -was already diffused and recognized both socially and publicly from the first decades of 18th century.
