Full textThe research arises from the issue of the relationship between history and narrative in the literature of the last fifteen years in three national contexts: Italy, Spain and Portugal. In order to investigate such a wide-spreading field, three intertwined main guidelines have been identified, coinciding with three "crisis". Through reflections on postmodernism (Lyotard, Jameson Hutcheon) and the analysis of Bourdieu, the relationship between market and literary author has been explored, with particular reference to the literary trail of Rafael Chirbes, Mia Couto and Wu Ming. The theme of the literary form was instead investigated by referring to the analyses of Hutcheon and taking into account the texts by Helder Macedo (Pedro e Paula), Isaac Rosa (¡Otra maldita novela sobre la guerra civil!) and Tommaso De Lorenzis-Guido Favale (L’aspra stagione). The crisis of the concept of truth is evaluated with regard to the debate on historiography. In particular, the tension between Hayden White and Charles Ginzuburg has been highlighted. As to provide a deeper understanding of how power relations influence the narrative of the story, the analyses performed by Michel Foucault, Michel de Certeau, Stephen Greenbaltt and Gayatri Spivak are taken into account. Javier Cercas’ Anatomía de un instante, Giancarlo de Cataldo’s Romanzo criminale and João Tordo’s As três vidas are therefore examinated. Lastly, the crisis of the nation-state is taken into consideration by identifying a tension between the analysis of György Lukács and the ones of Franco Moretti, and widening the reflection to the sociological analysis of Immanuel Wallerstein and Saskia Sassen. In addition, through the texts of Benedict Anderson and Homi Bhabha B., the reflection on the national political imaginary takes shape. The texts analyzed are Victus, by Albert Sánchez Piñol, Pro Patria, by Ascanio Celestini e A voz da terra by Miguel Real.

Full textDuring the nineteenth century in France, the education through classical studies of the elite meant to play the highest professional roles became increasingly anachronistic and the school system was the main target of many debates and reforming processes. These attempts of changing teaching methods and subjects increased even further after the battle of Sedan. At the end of the century, the persistence of a stationary culture and of an educational system linked to the humanistic tradition clashed with the democratisation of the society, the scientific progress and the economic development and also with the rush to modernise this culture. The aim of this research is to trace the main cultural, historical and economic factors that distinguished the history of French education, while analysing the long and various changes of classical humanities during the establishment of French secondary school, which was the more conservative institution of the nineteenth century.

Full textThe rich heritage of the tradition of Latin American critical thought allows us to penetrate in the heterogeneity of cultural processes present on the continent and on the isthmus and favours more punctual reflections on the differentiality with which modernity manifests itself. Dependent on this modernity is also the re-reading of certain categories, such as those of nationality, multiculturalism, identity, hibridez and mestizaje, heterogeneity and transculturation. It is in the light of this theoretical framework that the current Central American novel has been examined, by selecting a corpus of fifteen authors seen as most representative of the narrative diversification and heterogeneity of the cultural development of the six hispanophone countries of the region. The analysis of the works of these authors discloses the multiplicity of the representation of space as reproduction of the plural physiognomy of Central American identities; the relationship between history, memory and writing; the incorporation of the female voice and the exploration of private spaces; the post-war scenes, the violence and rupture with the imaginary representation of some societies through literary discourse. They are authors that have undertaken different readings of the same phenomenon, highlighting divergences and points in common, similarities and differences which can be deciphered by means of the notion of “contradictory totality”.

Full textAlternate History is nowadays a popular and well-studied literary genre; its origins, however, remain underinvestigated as well as its relationship to the neighboring field of counterfactual history––a genre dating back to Herodotus and Livy. Alternate History begins to appear as a distinct fictional genre only in the nineteenth century with Louis Geoffroy’s Napoléon Apocryphe (1836)––a history of «the conquest of the world and the universal monarchy»––and Charles Renouvier’s Uchronie. L’utopie dans l’histoire (1876)––«the history of European civilization as it could have been» if Christianity had been stopped. These works establish complex relationships both with realistic and fantastic literature of their age. Furthermore they raise questions concerning the epistemological status of historiographical practices and address the philosophy of history as inflected by the experience of revolution and utopian theories of social progress. Other fictional works, composed in England and in the United States in the same period, explore the speculative possibilities of the genre. Among these are Nathaniel Hawthorne’s P.s’ Correspondence (1845), George Chesney’s The Battle of Dorking (1871) and Edward Hale’s Hands Off (1881). A few decades later, an anthology titled If It Had Happened Otherwise (1931) anticipates many of the topics and formal devices which will be subsequently developed by science fiction and Alternate History authors. In my analysis of these texts I examine both the historical and literary context while paying attention to specific textual strategies. In particular I observe how Alternate History seems to demand the recognition of historical falsifications and the comparison with historical truth in order to produce meaning. Literary texts are also analyzed using theories on counterfactuals developed in various disciplines, especially history and psychology.

Full textNERI, ROSSELLA. "La metanarrativa: le teoria, la storia, i testi." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Verona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/11562/337411.
Full textThis thesis aims to provide a detailed description, yet not exhaustive, of the presence of the metanarrative in western literature from its very first appearance. The metanarrative refers to the literary process whereby a piece of literature focuses on itself, however numerous definitions of this technique have been given over the course of the years which, at times, have generated a lot of confusion. In my work I have chosen to follow both descriptions given to the phenomenon of the metanarrative by critics in the seventies and eighties of the 20th century. The first is provided by Patricia Waugh in her essay Metafiction, Theory and Practice of Self Conscious Fiction in 1984 and by Linda Hutcheon in Poetics on Postmodernism in 1988. Both literary works underline how the auto‐reflection of the text is really a reflection on the reality of a text and its rhetoric mechanisms and pretences. The second line of thought followed is that provided by the Franco‐American writer Raymond Federman in Surfiction, an essay written in 1975. Federman's view of the metanarrative is that it doesn't always have an exegesis relationship with the structure of the reality, however, at times, it is simply a game, a cultured divertissement which considers its texts out of touch with reality (the name Surfiction contains a clear reference to twenties Surrealism), such texts are completely taken out of the typical structure of the novel and their readability becomes seriously compromised. The content of this thesis is divided into three parts: the first confronts the study of the metanarrative from a historical point of view, highlighting the fact that this phenomenon is not ascribable to only one literary period, on the contrary, it is present in many historic epochs. The metanarrative is however believed to be distinguished in two main epochs, both in the 20th century where it experienced its greatest success; in Europe in the twenties and thirties and in the United States in the sixties and seventies. These two epochs highlight the peculiar characteristics of the metanarrative, forming two different categories. In the first epoch there was a marked interest to enhance the figure of the characters compared to that of the narrator, and this tendency corresponds to new philosophical and political movements in those years. In the second epoch it is not circumscribed as a majority movement but rather as experimental success, different in content and form and mainly directed towards the unveiling, or rather the demonstration of the fiction in the reality. The second part of the thesis is dedicated however to the study of the formalistic materials, highlighting and listing all the techniques of the masters of Structuralism which are not all ascribable to the metanarrative but explain, and at times provoke, its existence. This section has focused mainly on the concept of the death of the author as conveyed by Roland Barthes in 1968, on allegory, the antique rhetoric figure forgotten for centuries which made a come back in the 20th century and is in some way correlated to the concept of simulacra, elaborated by Jean Baudrillard in Simulacres and Simulation in 1981, very important for Postmodernism. The third and final part of the thesis is dedicated to highlighting some examples, pieces of metanarrative texts from those two epochs, mainly drawing attention to the American metanarrative in the sixties and seventies when the metanarrative had a large following. The texts are divided according to the structure used: from “variants of narratology” (those texts which still maintain a certain readability) to “experimental narrative” (where the plot of the texts are completely broken up leaving the reader to put the puzzle back together. The final chapter of the thesis aims to discover which of the metanarratives previously listed have survived into the contemporary western literature.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to offer a positive contribution to a philosophical reading of the work of Jean Baudrillard, which highlights its metaphysical character, through an examination of criticism and a comparison with some voices of contemporary debate. The thesis consists of three chapters. In the first one the problem and the context of the research are outlined. Through the survey of interviews, dialogues and diaries, a preliminary vision of Baudrillard's metaphysics is provided. Following, is a comparison with some critical voices on the possible interpretations of the breakthrough occurred in the thought of Baudrillard between 1976 and 1977, in conclusion of which we propose our reading of this turning point, consistent with the hypothesis of a metaphysical outcome of his thought. The second chapter focuses on the review of the state of criticism and takes into account the reasons that seem to explain the marginality of the metaphysical theme in the main Baudrillardian studies. We examine the critical production that has explicitly paid attention to the metaphysical character of Baudrillardian thought and contextualize the development of the problem concerning the readability of the work, focusing on two issues codified in the secondary literature: How to read Baudrillard (Kroker, Kellner, Gane, Butler) and the effet Baudrillard (Gauthier, L'Yvonnet, Jacquemond, Capovin). In the third and last chapter, instead, we test our metaphysical reading of Baudrillard through a correlation with two voices of the current debate on Speculative Realism (Harman and Meillassoux). Thanks to the punctual parallel with the theses of these two authors, the specificity of Baudrillardian thought is identified in having been able to open a path parallel to the major path of post-metaphysical thinking, declining the hyper-reflexive and meta-linguistic drift of contemporary philosophy in a speculative key.

Full textIt has always been believed that Parmenides affirmed the unity of Being. During the 20th century, however, some scholars began to doubt this attribute. In the first part of the thesis I analyzed the various critical interpretations that have been given in this regard and I tried to show how, over time, the idea of an absolute monism was increasingly abandoned to embrace the idea of a unity that was in relationship with the many. This revision was often accompanied by a re-evaluation of the Parmenidea physics exposed in the second part of the Poem. In particular, I focused on the mid-1900s readings (Verdenius, Calogero, Untersteiner), predicational interpretations (Kahn, Mourelatos, Curd) and more recent physics readings (Ruggiu, Casertano, Cerri, Palmer). In the second part of the thesis I have analyzed the fragments in which the various historians of philosophy have seen the possibility of arguments for or against certain conceptions of monism. Then I made a critical analysis of the fragments 4 and 8 (verses 4, 5-6, 12-13, 22-25, 36-37, 38, 53-54). In this analysis I have tried to bring elements to support the theory supported by me for which Parmenides would affirm the uni-totality, i.e. that the Parmenides poem's subject is the Cosmos, the whole Reality, the Whole that incorporates the sensitive manifold. The thesis terminates with an appendix dedicated to the Platonic references on the theme of unity in Parmenides.

Full textThe present thesis aims at reconstructing Jürgen Habermas’ work, from its Frankfurter roots until the latest developments, in order to sketch out the epistemological framework of a critical discourse of society. Within this context, the mechanism of the intersubjective communicative praxis – which displays the basis of Habermas’ accounts of language and action, morality and law, as well as of his theories of a post-secular modernity and a post-national democracy – has to be investigated as a double-track concept. On the one hand, communication relies on a tension between a counterfactual dimension and a factual one, which opens up the possibility of calling in question (and transforming) a given normative social order. On the other hand, following an intuition of the early Habermas, communication is a mechanism reproducing power and domination structures; it has therefore to be considered as the very target of critique.

Full textPoetic translation is faced on the empirical level of textual analysis. A short introduction presents some main theories about poetic translation, from Benjamin and Steiner till more recent experts: Meschonnic, Apel, Berman and Mattioli. Following these thoughts, the works of two couples of poets and translators are analyzed. In the first case Philippe Jaccottet will be dealing with the entire Ungaretti's poetic production; in the second example, the translating intent of Vittorio Sereni on René Char's poems is described. While investigating the complex nature of poetic translation as a practice and an experience, this thesis in Compared Literature tries to present translation as an hermeneutic tool and a re-enunciating mechanism: its role in the dialectic movement of influences and literary evolutions is considered as essential. The original ethical vocation of translation is a constant background of the research.

Full textThis work introduces a way of understanding Kant’s problem of metaphysics in the first Critique, by suggesting that speculative reason can state a positive metaphysical knowledge. The suggested solution focuses on three issues: the first is methodological, the second is exegetical, the third is argumentative. From the methodological point of view, this dissertation proposes a new method in interpreting Kant’s tought, that is the problem-arising method. From the exegetical point of view, it shows metaphysics as the primary object of such a method, and explains in which sense it is possible to state a ‘problem of metaphysics’ in kantian works. From the argumentative point of view, this work gives particular attention to the transcendental argument. In conclusion this dissertation demonstrates that the Transcendental Deduction of the first Critique coincides with a synthesis between the object and the foundation of metaphyisics, and for this synthesis is made by the metaphysics its-self, it is a positive knowledge.
