Full textThe present work deals with the role of metaphorical thinking in the public communication of contemporary physics. We focus on the cognitive aspects: how to disseminate complicated formal physical concepts to a non-professional public maintaining the ‘correct’ disciplinary meaning, that is aiming at communication of ‘good physics’. The focus is on the nature of the explanation and the problem is how to evaluate the effectiveness of public scientific explanation of advanced physical topics to a non-professional audience. For this purpose we have looked for formal tools apt at analyzing the linguistic features of dissemination texts. We have drawn our attention to the role of analogical and metaphorical forms in the construction of ‘actual’ physical meanings because they obviously play an important role in introducing new concepts from previous ones when dealing with contemporary physics phenomena that are far from the ordinary perceptive domain. For the purpose of our investigation the conceptual metaphor perspective, within the framework of cognitive linguistics, appeared to be the most promising analytical tool. We investigate the research problem by analyzing a set of ‘relevant’ analogies and metaphors taken from popular science literature. In particular an analysis of a case study, within the framework of conceptual metaphor, is presented : Schrödinger’s analogy for ‘elementary particle’. The results of the analysis suggest that the conceptual metaphor perspective might be a potential tool both to assess the quality of analogical forms used in explanation of contemporary physics and to design new and ‘better’ analogies and metaphors. Besides, in a recursive process this analysis could help to focus on those meaningful cognitive aspects that characterize, and refine, a ‘complete’ and ‘correct’ physical concept. We think that fruitful results of inquiry might come from a deeper interdisciplinary approach between linguistics and physics.

Full textThrough the analysis of literary, iconographic, numismatic and epigraphic sources, the thesis studies the particular form of political communication that the leaders of Rome developed by employing mythical figures, like gods and heroes, between the Ides of March 44 B.C. and the Augustan age. In particular, the research is about mythological assimilations and legendary genealogies used by Octavian, Mark Antony, Lepidus and Sextus Pompeius in order to spread throughout the citizens symbolic and propagandistic suggestions aiming at upholding their political designs.

Full textTaking into consideration a time span between 1945 and 1975, this thesis outlines the progressive codification of the national narratives at the basis of both demochristian political propaganda and government institutional communication. This comparative perspective includes also the analysis of the structures in charge of predisposing its carry out, i.e. the Spes in the case of demochristian propaganda and the Information Service of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in the case, instead, of the government's institutional communication. The origin and evolution of both offices are reconstructed in relation, respectively, to the party organizational model and to the antecedent and coeval institutional framework. Using as privileged source the audiovisual material produced over the years, the examination of the contents of the political propaganda and of the institutional communication identifies some specific and recurring themes within a narrative that unfolds between the post-war reconstruction and the emergence and consolidation of the economic development. In conclusion, a reflection is dedicated to the methods of use of the audiovisual sources of Spes and Information Service and its enhancement practices.

Full textThis dissertation focuses on the topography of communication during the “Roman revolution” (133-31 B.C.) and investigates the semiotic value of some public sites where highly significant political actions took place. The different strategies of communication at the time of the late Roman Republic are analysed by matching the memory of ancient sources to the investigation of the cultural value of four Roman sites. Chapter 1 reconstructs the political debate concerning the worship, the symbol and the site of the Dioscuri (from its association with an aristocratic gens to a symbol for the factio popularis). Chapter 2 revolves around the Temple of Concord, which constitutes as an actual place, as well as a political virtue and a slogan, a permanent endowment of the factio of the optimates. Chapter 3 examines cases of relationships developed in or on the theatre. The domus rostrata (Chapter 4) is taken as a legitimising element in the ideology of Pompeius, and one which was also appropriated by the subsequent proprietors of the house of Pompeius

Full textGregoratto, Federica <1983>. "Il discorso della critica : saggio su Jürgen Habermas." Doctoral thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/1189.
Full textThe present thesis aims at reconstructing Jürgen Habermas’ work, from its Frankfurter roots until the latest developments, in order to sketch out the epistemological framework of a critical discourse of society. Within this context, the mechanism of the intersubjective communicative praxis – which displays the basis of Habermas’ accounts of language and action, morality and law, as well as of his theories of a post-secular modernity and a post-national democracy – has to be investigated as a double-track concept. On the one hand, communication relies on a tension between a counterfactual dimension and a factual one, which opens up the possibility of calling in question (and transforming) a given normative social order. On the other hand, following an intuition of the early Habermas, communication is a mechanism reproducing power and domination structures; it has therefore to be considered as the very target of critique.

Full textThis research was conducted with the aim of considering the impact that the introduction of printing had on the practices of institutional communication. This choice has led us to identify the sixteenth century as the chronological area of analysis. In fact, the sixteenth century is a moment of extreme restructuring of communication techniques and of profound coexistence between the practices of manual copying and those of printing. In order to propose accurate considerations, we have also limited the geographical area to the city of Milan, a very important center in the early modern landscape. In order to reach accurate reflections, we have chosen to approach the problem from four different perspectives. First of all, we tried to show the channels through which the “gride” were circulating. These were the officers in charge of the management of this material, and how such documents were framed within the Milanese administration. This section introduces the work as it is relevant for both the manuscripts and the typographical documents. A further aspect that we have taken into consideration is the logic by which the administration chose to commission the printing of official writings to certain printers. This subject is at the center of chapter two, in which we open up to themes belonging to the history of the book: we have shown the importance that such assignments had in the business of the printers. A third section is devoted to the characteristics that the typographical “gride” assumed over the years. In this sense, the material aspects of the documents have been studied, with consideration taken in relation to the social functions they had to perform. We have also highlighted the roles that languages other than the vernacular, especially Latin and Castilian, played within these writings. From this perspective emerges the complexity of the Milanese linguistic landscape and the political importance that languages other than the vernacular could assume in the 16 th century. Lastly, we gave an account of the plural life of these documents. To begin, we emphasized the spaces that were maintained by manuscript production even in the mid-sixteenth century. Then we pointed out the production processes that accompanied the realization of typographical documents. In this sense emerged the role that the agents of the chancery maintained in the production of printed material. We also highlighted the autonomy that pertained to the printers. Moreover we took into account the importance of the participation of different actors in the production phases, in terms of both tasks and cultural horizons. Finally, we have considered the value that the normative.

Full textChanges in museological and museographic approaches, thanks to new technologies both for the cataloging and communication of collections, represent an established and recognized fact. The virtual museum is a concept with which art history began to familiarize itself at the end of the nineteenth century with the first approach by historical avant-gardes to the museum space and to the concept of museum itself, intending to promote a model for an aesthetic usability and enjoyment, interpretable and interactable, personalizable when not really portable. Starting from these premises, the aim of the thesis is to identify the contact points, if any, between the new manifestations of Digital Art History and the projects that affect the digital museum. The thesis aims to suggest the museum as a privileged area for the development of historical and artistic digital research, as the place where the results of these studies become an accessible resource to the stratified audience, made up of generic or specialized users. Examples of digital projects that concern both museums and art history will be compared, but the case treated in more detail, chosen to test this research, concerns one of the most famous and "old" digital resources for the history of art: the Getty Provenance Index. This project is included in a three-year program, the Provenance Index Remodeling, which will modify the types of access to the various databases that make it up and which will influence the ways how this structure can be used by users, scholars, researchers, students, technicians and museum curators.

Full textThe present work offers a linguistic analysis of implicitness in the stories "Drakon" [The Dragon], "Peščera" [The Cave] and "Mamaj", written by Yevgeny Zamyatin between 1918 and 1920 and known as his Petrograd cycle of stories. This topic is justified not only by the peculiarities of these texts, whose reference to post-revolutionary context and criticism of revolution are very clear but quite implicit, and the reader can only infer them from the text and the context he shares with the writer, but also by what Zamyatin stated in his essays on prose, where implicitness is one of the main instruments for achieving his idea of literary work as the result of the cooperation between author and reader. The analysis proceeds by applying the elements provided by the relevance theory which has been developed by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson since the eighties, and particularly that of implicature and explicature; they are more fruitful than traditional rhetorical categories, which shed light on the way Zamyatin’s texts are built, but do not explain how the reader understands and interprets them, that is, how the creative cooperation pointed out in Zamyatin’s aesthetics takes place.
