Full textThe present work deals with the role of metaphorical thinking in the public communication of contemporary physics. We focus on the cognitive aspects: how to disseminate complicated formal physical concepts to a non-professional public maintaining the ‘correct’ disciplinary meaning, that is aiming at communication of ‘good physics’. The focus is on the nature of the explanation and the problem is how to evaluate the effectiveness of public scientific explanation of advanced physical topics to a non-professional audience. For this purpose we have looked for formal tools apt at analyzing the linguistic features of dissemination texts. We have drawn our attention to the role of analogical and metaphorical forms in the construction of ‘actual’ physical meanings because they obviously play an important role in introducing new concepts from previous ones when dealing with contemporary physics phenomena that are far from the ordinary perceptive domain. For the purpose of our investigation the conceptual metaphor perspective, within the framework of cognitive linguistics, appeared to be the most promising analytical tool. We investigate the research problem by analyzing a set of ‘relevant’ analogies and metaphors taken from popular science literature. In particular an analysis of a case study, within the framework of conceptual metaphor, is presented : Schrödinger’s analogy for ‘elementary particle’. The results of the analysis suggest that the conceptual metaphor perspective might be a potential tool both to assess the quality of analogical forms used in explanation of contemporary physics and to design new and ‘better’ analogies and metaphors. Besides, in a recursive process this analysis could help to focus on those meaningful cognitive aspects that characterize, and refine, a ‘complete’ and ‘correct’ physical concept. We think that fruitful results of inquiry might come from a deeper interdisciplinary approach between linguistics and physics.

Full textThe Phd thesis is dedicated to the figure of the secretary as a political actor in Early Modern Italy. The case study is represented by four unknown private secretaries: Alberto Bissa (Piacenza, ca 1520-post 1594), Bartolomeo Zucchi (Monza, 1560-1630), Annibale Guasco (Alessandria, 1540-1619) and Bonifacio Vannozzi. (Pistoia, 1549-1621). By studying their correspondences, published in books of letters, the research reconstructs their biographies and focuses on the social relationship formed through the collaborative work of master and secretary. Printed letters, far from being only formal technical models, are studied as communication tools, that contribute to the birth of the public sphere.

Full textThrough the analysis of literary, iconographic, numismatic and epigraphic sources, the thesis studies the particular form of political communication that the leaders of Rome developed by employing mythical figures, like gods and heroes, between the Ides of March 44 B.C. and the Augustan age. In particular, the research is about mythological assimilations and legendary genealogies used by Octavian, Mark Antony, Lepidus and Sextus Pompeius in order to spread throughout the citizens symbolic and propagandistic suggestions aiming at upholding their political designs.

Full textThis dissertation focuses on the topography of communication during the “Roman revolution” (133-31 B.C.) and investigates the semiotic value of some public sites where highly significant political actions took place. The different strategies of communication at the time of the late Roman Republic are analysed by matching the memory of ancient sources to the investigation of the cultural value of four Roman sites. Chapter 1 reconstructs the political debate concerning the worship, the symbol and the site of the Dioscuri (from its association with an aristocratic gens to a symbol for the factio popularis). Chapter 2 revolves around the Temple of Concord, which constitutes as an actual place, as well as a political virtue and a slogan, a permanent endowment of the factio of the optimates. Chapter 3 examines cases of relationships developed in or on the theatre. The domus rostrata (Chapter 4) is taken as a legitimising element in the ideology of Pompeius, and one which was also appropriated by the subsequent proprietors of the house of Pompeius

Full textTaking into consideration a time span between 1945 and 1975, this thesis outlines the progressive codification of the national narratives at the basis of both demochristian political propaganda and government institutional communication. This comparative perspective includes also the analysis of the structures in charge of predisposing its carry out, i.e. the Spes in the case of demochristian propaganda and the Information Service of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in the case, instead, of the government's institutional communication. The origin and evolution of both offices are reconstructed in relation, respectively, to the party organizational model and to the antecedent and coeval institutional framework. Using as privileged source the audiovisual material produced over the years, the examination of the contents of the political propaganda and of the institutional communication identifies some specific and recurring themes within a narrative that unfolds between the post-war reconstruction and the emergence and consolidation of the economic development. In conclusion, a reflection is dedicated to the methods of use of the audiovisual sources of Spes and Information Service and its enhancement practices.
