Full textThe «Rivista del Cinematografo» is the most ancient magazine in the Italian history of cinema. Published before 1928, in 2008 it celebrated its 80th anniversary. In spite of this long-lived presence in Italian publishing, the «Rivista del Cinematografo» represents a history left out in social discourses. This research considers instead the «Rivista del Cinematografo» as a cultural history that can illuminate the historical processes of the Italian cinema with particular – but not exclusive – reference to their relationships with the catholic culture. It could be said that the history of the «Rivista del Cinematografo» is a long duration microhistory. This definition can appear conflicting because it puts two categories that come from two different historical traditions near to each other: the microhistory and the long duration. But this research intends to explore a new historical perspective – the ‘so called’ cultural history – with the aim of learning from a debate which has developed enormously in recent years and analysing the consequences that this debate also has on the historical practice in the field of cinema.

SEVERINI, SARA. "Poligrafia pittoresca.
Full textThe doctoral thesis "Picturesque polygraphy. The eccentric writing of Marie Gamél Holten between Italy and Denmark in the early twentieth century" represents an archival-documentary and historical-literary survey of a minor figure in the Danish literary panorama, the polygrapher and Italianist Marie Gamél Holten (1855-1943). Italian-themed journalistic collaborations author, appearing in Danish newspapers and magazines since the 1910s, Marie Gamél Holten is the Danish translator of Grazia Deledda, of Giovanni Pascoli's work, as well as of Giuseppe Cesare Abba's "Noterelle!; in 1913 in Copenhagen, she published a travel book of Sardinia, "The Unknown Island, as the result of two historical journeys made on the Island. A regular traveler in Italy and a frequent visitor, albeit marginally, to the main cultural institutions of the time, such as the National Central Library of Florence, the GP Vieusseux Scientific Literary Cabinet in Florence, the Vittorio Emanuele Library in Rome (future Central National Library in Rome ), the Scandinavian Circle in Rome, Marie Gamél Holten moves from the center to the Italian suburbs and vice versa, gravitating around the main networks without becoming an integral part of them, and placing the city alongside smaller places of Italian geography and history, whose stories she returns in many ways and forms; as a librarian, in Copenhagen, she actively promotes the Italian culture by participating and organizing the library of the Copenhagen Committee of the Dante Alighieri Society, to which she remains linked until at least 1938. Her creative production, in particular the journalistic one, includes a variety of concise literary forms, from news article to creative writing, from historical-literary essay to travel letters: together with the translations that serve as training for a proper literary activity, and for the travel book, it is configured as a "picturesque polygraphy", both in the sense of the eighteenth-century erudition and in its ability to give back to the Danish reader small stories about minor Italy, fragments of a "parceled" trip to Italy, that becomes innovative with respect to the practices of the Grand Tour, under the pressure of modern tourism. This dissertation consists of three chapters, each addressed to a specific goal. After a more personal preface, and a methodological introduction, chapter I presents the reconstruction of the historical figure of the author, semi-unknown at the beginning of the research, the result of a detailed work of archival investigation and the recovery of material traces, where possible. This "literary archeology" operation allowed a first interpretation as well as a systematization of the aforementioned materials. Chapter II aims to frame Holten's creative production within the wider network between Denmark and Italy’s cultural relationships in the early twentieth century, a field in which systematic studies are currently lacking. Therefore, the Danish Italianist, becomes an 'opportunity' for a more in-depth study of this complex cultural network, which was configured as an authentic "civilization of courtesy” at the beginning of the First World War. Alongside her, in this section emerges the central figure of Johannes Jørgensen, next to a myriad of silhouettes of publishers and minor characters who nevertheless play a crucial role in the transmission of Italian culture in Denmark, both during the Giolittian age and in the fascist era. Chapter III, through a philological analysis of the Holtenian production, aims to restore to Holten's creative production a poetic dignity, as well as to its author, recognizing in the pictorial polygraphy an original contribution to the history of culture between Denmark and Italy in the early twentieth century, and also to the Danish travel literature on Italy: "The Unknown Island" is investigated both from a stylistic point of view and in its relations with cultural history and ideas, as well as the rising practice of tourism, which changes the very nature of odeporic writing . After a few brief conclusions, the thesis ends with Bibliography, Index of Names, Index of Places, and two appendices, respectively ASE (Exemplary Writings Appendix) and AMO (Original Materials Appendix): the first one presents, in the Italian translation of the candidate, some writings considered exemplary with respect to the contemporary Danish literary tradition; the second one shows, in addition to the archival documents (realia) found during the early stages of the research, the entire Holtenian creative production in the original scans and in the Italian translation of the candidate: this is not a literary but cultural translation, and translation should be intended to guarantee to the no-danish speaker a general understanding of the Holtenian polygraphy.

Full textThe research presents and deals with the thought development of the jansenist abbot Pietro Tamburini (Brescia 1737- Pavia 1827), a figure has to date been scarcely studied from a historical- juridical perspective notwithstanding the role played by Tamburini as lecturer of law at the University of Pavia and the importance of his works on the ethical-juridical debate between the XVIII and XIX century. From a study of his numerous printed works and analysis of manuscript sources – partly unpublished – we propose to the reader a bifocal analysis: on the one part jurisdictionalist reflection and on the other from a natural law perspective. On the first part we will study the theme of ecclesiastical and civil tolerance in religion and the civilistic configuration of marriage as a direct parallel to anticurialist politics introduced in the second half of the Eighteenth century by the Hapsburg emperor Joseph II. On the second part attention is given to the study of the relationship between the “natural state” and the “social state” on the basis of reinterpretation of the concepts of “social contract” and sovereignty. In depth study will also be made of natural rights and duties of man, personal and real property, equality rights and conventional obligations, profoundly influenced by the jansenist French jurist Jean Domat.

Full textA piece of clothing, either very sophisticated or simple, has got a series of elements that dialogue with society, culture and the world it belongs to. Any piece of clothing tells a story about its evolutions and revolutions, which means that it is never only a piece of clothing made to cover a body, but a multiple level nonverbal act. Some clothes marked particular moments of the history of costume, from the miniskirt to the tie, and among these jeans played a fundamental role. Jeans, in fact, show many interpretative meanings and represent a piece of clothing which is still being self-defining. In Italy, from the second afterwar, a new important industry related to fashion developed. Among these producers there were the first jeans makers that followed one another trying to meet the rising demand of the young. In 1978 in a market practically full, Diesel was born, destined to become, in a short term, a globally successful company. Diesel represents an Italian success story, it was able to assert itself by revisiting fashion and culture. Particularly it gave space to singularity, to the individual’s capacity which stands out, to the will of being faithful to oneselves, thus following and celebrating methodologies and approaches of the young movements and anti-fashion. Diesel told all this through a rich communication which led the company to start a new communication methodology based on a vast storytelling focused on the individual celebration. Retracing Diesel history means, in fact, giving a cultural interpretation and creating relations between communication and some elements coming from photography, economics and company history. The present research, based on original sources coming for the first time from the company archives, has the aim to retrace and rebuild the society history through an interpretation of the communication characterized by a constant updating of the methodologies and storytelling. As we traced the communication evolution, we took into account on one hand the company implications, and on the other hand the economic ones in order to understand the Diesel case. Economic situations, company changes, business changes, which together with the communication choices, have made Diesel a global company.
Garofalo, Damiano.

Full textI have done my paper in quest of “neutral Italian”, that national, standard, unitary language which is a model for all regional and individual variations. I have dealt with the topic historically : I have singled out the most meaningful stages of this cultural debate (an essential component of the matter of the Italian language) examining school curricula, theories and lack of implementation. The first part of my paper focuses on the dichotomy between plain language and dialect while the second part deals with the contrasting realities of “neutral Italian” and “regional Italians” The cultural debate has shown the existence of continuing interest in a linguistic model for the spoken language tracing a sort of “geometrical” history of the language, going from the Florentine hub, to the “ Florence-Rome axis” and then to the “ northern triangle” finally to get to the most recent theories about the “geophonic centre”. As regards the school world I have detected the lack of an efficacious, structured linguistic policy on the spoken language other than on the written and the grammatical one.

Full textThis dissertation is aimed to outline a cultural history of early Italian television, focusing on the pattern by which TV became part of its first audience’s daily routines, and trying to give sense of how the first public of the small screen experienced the arrival of the television in the space of their homes, in the years of institutionalisation of the new medium (1954-1960). After an overview of the scientific literature that has dealt with the topic of “media domestication”, cultural biography of technical objects, and historical analysis of television’s culture of viewing, the second section of the thesis examines how the system of popular media (mainly advertising, popular press, and broadcaster’s house organs) ascribed meanings to television as a domestic medium and advised its public how to use it. A third section of the dissertation is devoted to understanding the television viewing and consumption in historical perspective, through a ethnographic research developed with twenty in-depth interviews to witnesses that participated directly in the first diffusion and domestication of the TV sets in Italy.

Full textAs part of the current historiography of the cultural studies of international relationships, this thesis questions the role of artistic exchanges in Franco-Italian diplomatic relations, from the aftermath of World War II to the beginnings of European construction. The analysis of exhibitions held by the Cultural Services of the French and Italian Ministries of Foreign Affairs, respectively in Italy and France, highlights the balance of power and the keys to the Franco-Italian reconciliation after 1945. The reconstruction of national identities, their representations and their circulations in both sides of the Alps are questioned in the particular context of the Cold War leading to the rise of a new form of European cultural diplomacy. We focus, firstly, on the modalities of institutional and ideological transition before and after World War II, introducing elements of interruptions and continuities. We then analyze the "militant" exhibitions, main focus of tensions and strong geopolitical issues in the international stage. Finally, we show the emergence of recurring patterns and exhibition typologies which address the need for diplomatic balance pursued by the French and Italian governments in the formation of cultural Europe after 1945

Full textIn 2019 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing and this research aims to analyse how the conquest of the satellite has been a technical and scientific goal and has had a great historical and cultural relevance. The choice of this event has been strategic for an actualization and contextualization of this theme through different areas. This work originates from the literary and cinematographic fascination and spreads, through the science fiction genre, to the so-called ‘Moon Years'. The discussion proceeds with the analysis of the history of the conquest starting from the ashes of the war and it focuses on decision-making, on propaganda and on the technological push that allowed the Apollo program to achieve one of the most ambitious goals in the history of humanity. In order to document the media event, we have examined the articles published on the two top newspapers in the world and the two main Italian weekly magazines from 1968 to 1970. This documentation, together with a series of interviews conducted with professionals who worked on these themes, allowed to verify how the press and television approached the missions. The new need for information and documentation has laid the foundations for scientific communication and created the first generation of scientific journalists. The interest and the curiosity that the event has aroused in collective imagination confirm the 'popular dimension' of the Moon landing. That is why it can be considered as a case of pop science. Among all the legacies of the golden years of space age, we have also mentioned the patents, the beginning of international collaborations, along with the spread of the Moon landing conspiracy theories and the new frontiers of space exploration.

Full textThe aim of this study is to understand how the concept of cultural heritage in Italy developed during the second half of the Twentieth Century. Therefore the analysis of historical and political events on the management, development and protection of cultural heritage is considered relevant. The attention is focused especially on the development of public policies in Italy between the late Sixties and the first half of the Seventies. This period can be defined as a summit of the debate and policies that in Italy began, after the Unification. The establishment of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the first regional initiatives in the field of culture, are the central passages of this process. In this way, in the relationship between national and local organization appears a new attention to the development of cultural policies. Finally, for a European look in the evolution of cultural policies the case of France is considered peculiar for the creation of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, in the late Fifties.

Full textThe research focuses the role played by Adriano Bernareggi, priest in Milan, then bishop of Bergamo since 1932, in the renewal movement of ecclesiastical studies during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Trained at the Gregorian and Lateran Universities, in a climate marked by modernism and vatican reaction, Bernareggi taught at the seminary of Milan, from 1909 to 1932, and at the Catholic University, from 1922 to 1926. In these sites, he strove to give a modern response - not modernist – to the spiritual anxiety of modern man, through a new religious language, able to enhance Church history and, especially, its liturgy. Particular attention has been paid to: the teaching, including the attempt to promote an update of the Ratio Studiorum of the Theological Faculty, following lines that anticipated Deus Scientiarum Dominus; the direction of the magazine “La Scuola Cattolica”, that he attempted to transform in a national periodic of sacred sciences, to regenerate religious studies through the application of an historical perspective and critical-philological research method; the participation in the liturgical and artistic movement in Milan, looking to french teachings and Maria Laach, especially to rediscovery the initiation value of rites; the prevostship at St. Vittore al Corpo, a laboratory of a new “liturgical practice”; the role in the debate on the Roman Question and Conciliation.

This study has searched the comprehension about certain representation structures found in Aquiles Bernardi s (1937) work. Among the aspects which build up this representation, the cultural aspects had been analysed in order to be more specific, which doesn t exclude social and politic questions when necessary. It s about a route where, from the analyses and interpretation, i tried to understand how the Italian Immigration culture from Rio Grande do Sul changes happened from its real context to the limits concerning the fiction aspect present in the book which is this work s corpus. In this process i intended to comprehend in what way the Italian Immigration and the clergy culture were helpful to the analysed work, as well as the result of this conjugation.

Full textThis thesis aims to highlight the role played by Alberto Carocci as chief editor, co-founder, and cultural organizer, in collaboration with Alberto Moravia, of the first series of the review "Nuovi Argomenti" (1953-1965). This study is based on the recovery of substantial unpublished documentation relating to Carocci's correspondence with the main contributors to the first series of the review: it especially draws on the mailing with Norberto Bobbio, Italo Calvino, Giulio Einaudi, Franco Fortini, Georg Lukàcs, Adriano Olivetti and Sergio Solmi. Indeed, these unpublished documentary sources, preserved in the archives of the forementioned contributors and in the private Carocci’s one, offered a complete picture of the network underpinning “Nuovi Argomenti”. Intellectual, political, amicable and professional relations are described and analysed by this study with the aim of emphasizing the most significant moments in the cultural and literary history of the review during the 1950s and the 1960s.

Full textOne may approach cinema as a cultural vector which can either give shape to the habits and customs of a given society or reflect its yearnings. The Italian film industry is one among those which have produced movies which entered the global cultural imaginary. Nowadays, its international presence has been reshaped and Italian films do not easily shine beyond the national frame. Artists such as Emanuele Crialese, Matteo Garrone or Paolo Sorrentino have managed to achieve an undeniable visibility, and have become the symbol of a reborn contemporary Italian cinema. The content of their filmographies are the result of film shapes that are as rich as they are diverse, and their influence seems able to alter and to update the imaginary of italian culture connoisseurs. The purpose of our work is to study and understand the impact of their masterpieces on the French audience. Through a historical, sociological and economical study, we will analyse the representation of reality in the history of Italian cinema : an intellectual ideal which seems to have been of interest especially to the French spectators. Then we will focus on the content of these three specific directors’ lifework in order to examine social, political and economical data. Finally, we will conclude by observing the impact these films have had on French experts such as film critics. This study also deals with the distribution and the running of these specific directors’ films not only in the cinemas but also when aired in various film festivals
