Johnson, Ryan J. Deleuze, A Stoic. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474462150.001.0001.

Abstract:
Deleuze dramatises the story of ancient philosophy as a rivalry of four types of thinkers: the subverting pre-Socratics, the ascending Plato, the interiorising Aristotle and the perverting Stoics. Deleuze assigns the Stoics a privileged place because they introduced a new orientation for thinking and living that turns the whole story of philosophy inside out. This book reveals Deleuze’s provocative reading of ancient Stoicism produced many of his most singular and powerful ideas. For Deleuze, the Stoics were innovators of an entire system of philosophy which they structured like an egg. Johnson structures his book in this way: Part I looks at physics (the yolk), Part II is logic (the shell) and Part III covers ethics (the albumen). Including previously untranslated French Stoic scholarship, Johnson unearths new possibilities for bridging contemporary and ancient philosophy.

Clark, Sharri R., and Jonathan Mark Kenoyer. South Asia—Indus Civilization. Edited by Timothy Insoll. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199675616.013.024.

Abstract:
Figurines of the Indus Civilization (c.2600–1900 BC) provide unique insights into technological, social, and ideological aspects of this early urban society. The Indus script has not yet been deciphered, so figurines provide one of the most direct means to understand social diversity through ornament and dress styles, gender depictions, and various ritual traditions. This chapter focuses on figurines from the site of Harappa, Pakistan, with comparative examples from other sites excavated in both India and Pakistan. Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic terracotta figurines, and special forms with moveable components or representing composite or fantastic creatures, are found at most sites of the Indus Civilization, with rare examples of figurines made of bronze, stone, faience, or shell. The raw materials and technologies used to make figurines are discussed, along with the archaeological contexts in which they have been discovered. These figurines provide an important line of evidence regarding Indus society and religion.

Schrijver, Karel. Habitability of Planets and Moons. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198799894.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
The author takes us to visit Saturn’s moon Titan, and Venus, Mars, and to the unconfirmed planet GJ581d. Although we find unearthly conditions on these bodies’ surfaces today, things were different in the past. Even now, there are oceans deep below Titan’s frozen ice shell that itself sees liquid methane rains and vast ethane-filled lakes. Venus and Mars both had liquid water long ago, while Venus may even have been comfortably warm and humid before modern complex life developed on Earth. Many potentially habitable exoplanets are likely locked in their rotation to always face their star with the same side, causing incredible differences between their day and night sides. This chapter reviews how oceans and atmospheres are lost by the Sun’s magnetism or protected by that of the planets’, how masses of carbon dioxide can be stored in solid limestone, and how habitable zones shift to and from planets.

Cohen, Richard I., ed. Shelly Zer-Zion, Habima beBerlin: miysudo shel teatron tziyoni (Habima in Berlin: The Institutionalization of a Zionist Theater). Jerusalem: Magnes, 2015. 282 pp. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190912628.003.0036.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the book Habima beBerlin: miysudo shel teatron tziyoni (Habima in Berlin: The Institutionalization of a Zionist Theater) (2015), by Shelly Zer-Zion. Habima in Berlin tells the story of Habima, Israel’s national theater company. Zer-Zion explores Habima’s European and overseas tour during the period 1926–1931, and especially its extended stay in Berlin, arguing that Habima drew its inspiration from two separate and distinct theatrical models—not only that of Russia but also one that was rooted in the German-Jewish spirit of Bildung. Instead of focusing on the company’s theatrical productions, Zer-Zion takes a more historical approach, documenting the brutal end of German–Jewish dialogue in the early 1930s, the relocation of Habima to Palestine, and its role as a refuge for German Jewish actors and creators who fled Germany.
