Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/7103.

Full text
Abstract:
Direct detection of recombinant peptidic hormones erythropoietin (EPO) and growth hormone (GH), very similar to endogen molecules and with a short half life in blood, is difficult in antidoping control.
The main objective of this work is to determine indirect biomarkers' values of EPO, soluble transferrin receptor, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and procollagen type III peptide (P-III-P), in selected populations of athletes, and the effect of exercise and different types of training on their concentration in serum.
The comparison of results obtained by the different assays showed the need of extensive validation of the analytical techniques before their use in the antidoping field. Excepting P-III-P, proposed biomarkers for the detection of rhEPO and rhGH abuse are not directly influenced by the athletic level, exercise or different training workload along the sport season. Age is the main factor affecting IGF-I and P-III-P concentrations in serum.

Abstract:

Holic, Nathan Andrew. "Frat Star." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2007. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3140.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis, a social novel in the tradition of Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities and Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, is all at once an attentive first-person study of a twenty-something man close to his cracking point in his first post-college job, a detailed exposé of national fraternities, and the sweeping panoramic view of an entire generation of over-programmed college students searching for direction. Frat Star follows a fragile college graduate named Charles Washington, who takes a position as an "Educational Consultant" with a national fraternity in his first semester after graduation. For sixteen straight weeks, he drives across the country, from college to college and fraternity house to fraternity house, meeting with alumni and students, and living on frat house couches and in seedy off-exit hotels. As he travels, the pressure mounts for Charles to convince his family and friends back home that this is a "Real Job" and that his work actually matters to the business world, but at each new fraternity house he visits, his yearning for the old college atmosphere grows--the beer, the parties, the girls!--threatening to send him into a frightening tailspin. How can he be a professional when the temptations of youth still seem so attractive? And before Charles can sort out what is happening in his own life, he finds himself stuck in a vicious tug-of-war between students, alumni, administrators, and the national fraternity, when he must deal with one particularly abrasive undergraduate fraternity and the aftermath of its disastrous decisions. Spanning thousands of miles, from Florida to California, from Illinois to New Mexico, this thesis takes us inside fraternity houses, into their attics and their basements, behind the scenes of their rituals and ceremonies, inside their parties, inside their heads, giving us a view not only of the power of the national fraternity, but the disconnect between alumnus and student, between Baby Boomer and Generation X and Millennial. Incorporating research as varied as the generational studies of Howe and Strauss, and Alexandra Robbins' psychological study of the "Quarterlife Crisis," Frat Star stretches across the country, stretches across genre, stretches from text to illustration, but is ultimately the human story of a young man's longing for morality, independence, and purpose in a world he simply has not been prepared to understand.

Polley, Sarah Jayne. "Embracing star couples : contextualising star images in Hollywood's studio era." Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/65201/.

Full text
Abstract:
Much star studies theory, following key theorist Richard Dyer (1998/1979; 1986), continues a focus on 'the star' in isolation. This thesis, however, places stars within the context of other stars. Specifically, I analyse three popular star couples from Hollywood's Studio Era. Star couples played an important part in Hollywood production and reception, with many films employing a male and a female star involved in a romantic plot. My case studies of Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor (partnered in films from 1927-1934), William Powell and Myrna Loy (1934-1947), and Walter Pidgeon and Greer Garson (1941-1953) focus on their representation in fan magazines. Fan magazines are rich and complex sites of star and audience interaction, with these publications misleadingly implying that they provide access to the 'real' star. In fact, as Dyer has commented, we are only ever offered a carefully constructed media text - a 'star image' - comprised of promotion, publicity, films, and criticism and commentary. Fan magazines have recently become increasingly available to researchers via digital platforms, making my advancing of a rigorous, yet flexible, methodology especially relevant. Expanding on recent work on tropes in fan magazine coverage, I analyse themes occurring in these stars' screen and star images. Comparison within and between these star couples affords insights into what found favour with audiences at different times, especially in relation to romance. The thesis also sheds light on the intricate ways Hollywood negotiated its presentation of screen and star images within the framework of myriad stars.

Hoffman, Kelsey Llyn. "Neutron star metallurgy." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/38311.

Full text
Abstract:
The crust of a neutron star plays an important role in the emission observed from it. The thermal emission generated in the core of the neutron star passes through the crust, thus it is important to know what is in the crust in order to understand how the emission is shaped and altered. The crust itself may be responsible for the observations of glitches from neutron stars and also as a source of gravitational waves. This thesis is two-fold. The first goal is to calculate the composition of the neutron star crust of a non-accreting neutron star. The second is to use the calculated crustal compositions in molecular dynamics simulations in order to determine the shear modulus and breaking strain of the crustal material. The composition of the crust is found to be dependent on how the neutron star cooled. Nuclear reactions within the crust are quenched as the star cools. The composition of the crust, envelope, and atmosphere are calculated after the nuclear reactions are quenched. With the settling timescales of the various isotopes in the crust, some of these isotopes are able to float up to the neutron star surface and form the atmosphere. Three different cooling methods were used in these calculations – modified Urca cooling, a thick crust and a thin crust – each produces different atmospheric and crustal compositions. The calculated crustal abundances are then used as initial conditions in molecular dynamics simulations. A shear force is introduced by deforming the simulation box. The shear modulus and breaking strain are calculated for the three different crustal compositions as well as for perfect pure face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) systems. The upper limit, from the perfect crystal lattice structure, on the breaking strain is found to ~0.11 − 0.12 and the shear modulus is found to be 6.5 × 10³º dyne/cm². These properties predict glitch amplitudes of ∆Ω/Ω∼10⁻³. The gravitational wave strain amplitudes for PSR J2124- 3358 are also predicted to be greater than the observed upper limits. This indicates that the neutron star crust is not a perfect BCC lattice which deformed to 10% of the maximum.

This workis devoted to the description of some induced representation series of a Lie group in terms of deformations on some algebras of functions on the associated coadjoint orbits, according to F. Bayen, M. Flato, C. Fronsdal, A. Lichnerowicz and D. Sternheimer. The way used is the construction of a symbolic calculous (generalized Weyl transform) on coadjoint orbits and this construction has been realized here in two important cases : the case of the coadjoint orbits of a semi simple Lie group associated to its unitary principal series and the case of massive coadjoint orbits of a generalized Poincaré group (semi direct product of a semi simple Lie group by a vector space). In these two cases, we have defined the star representations (in the Fronsdal's sense associated to the considered representations)

Abstract:
This dissertation clarifies two aspects of neutron-star formation and evolution: the formation of neutron stars through the accretion-induced collapse of white dwarfs and the common envelope evolution of neutron stars. In both cases, we utilize a 1-D lagrangean and 2-D SPH hydrodynamics codes equipped with a broad range of physics including neutrino emission, absorption, and transport, general relativity and dense equations of state. These results are then applied to a Monte-Carlo population synthesis code to study the effects of kicks placed upon neutron stars near the time of their formation. By comparing these results with the current observational data, we find that a bimodal kick distribution of neutron-star kicks is required.

Abstract:
Rear wheel steering of vehicles is a possible steering, which has been forgotten in vehicle design. Earlier works show only details concerning one vehicle type from this subject. In this work the author will first present a background to how different vehicles are steered and then the analysis of it. The purpose with this paper is to from literature and interviews answer to which impact the placement of the engine and the conceptual differences have on the steering from different vessels. It will also answer which anticipated properties the steering will have if it´s not placed in a conventional way. Through simulation in MATLAB the paper will answer to which degree mass, velocity and length of axle influences steering behaviour of a rear wheal steered, RWS, car and how the steering response is different to a front wheal steered car, FWS. The result from the literature and the interview shows that placement of engine and propeller near the rudder is very important for a ships steering capability. For vehicles it has most effect on the centrum of gravity, which is to prefer in middle of the vehicle, and for airplanes the ability to place cargo. The conceptual differences shows that a larger vehicle has more to gain, if it is equipped with four wheel steering, due to turning radius is a more critical aspect. For airplanes in super sonic speed it reveals that they need another set of wings. Ships need a smaller turning radius in harbours and all size of ships then use thrusters. The properties of a vessel with not conventional steering are most negative for cars and ships because of risk for oversteering and instability, while for airplanes its already in use in form of canard wings. The simulations display that rear wheel steered vehicle should have a limit of velocity because of its behaviour in high speeds over 50 km/h. A larger mass has shown todepress the magnitude of lateral acceleration in wrong direction and a larger length of an axle is shown to depress the yaw-rate. The result also displays that a RWS vehicle has a delay of the lateral acceleration compared to a FWS vehicle with approximately 0,1-0,2 seconds depending on mass, velocity and length of axle. The test of response indicates that this delay contributes to the delay of the lateral movement of the vehicle the first second for speeds between 10-90 km/h, but after only 1,5 seconds further thelateral movement is twice the value for speeds 50-90km/h. The conclusion is that vehicle doesn’t have RWS due to the delay in response in the beginning and the very larger lateral movement after only seconds later, which makes the vehicle hard to control.

High, Kirsty. "Fading Star : understanding accelerated decay of organic remains at Star Carr." Thesis, University of York, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/7433/.

Full text
Abstract:
The early Mesolithic site of Star Carr (approximately 11 ka BP) is widely acknowledged as one of the most important wetland sites in Northern Europe. It has provided some of the most informative archaeological evidence for hunter-gatherer lifestyles in Britain at that time. However, recent observations suggest that the site is no longer providing the conditions necessary for such remarkable archaeological preservation. In 2007 and 2008, excavations at the site uncovered artefacts displaying alarming levels of diagenesis, suggesting that current conditions may be leading to the destruction of any organic material yet to be uncovered. Geochemical and hydrological investigations suggest that this is closely linked to changes occurring due to drying out of the site. However, scientific data regarding the rates and mechanisms of decay in such acidic environments are severely lacking. The aim of this thesis is to apply an experimental approach to investigate the observed deterioration, in order to answer some key questions: Is Star Carr undergoing accelerated deterioration, and if so, how are the changing site conditions contributing to this? Ultimately, by learning more about the key factors facilitating degradation in the specific burial environments at Star Carr, strategies to slow or stop the deterioration can be recommended, both for Star Carr and other wetland archaeological sites. A suite of appropriate analytical methods have been tested and applied to assess deterioration in both bone and wood. It has been shown that as different techniques provide complementary and sometimes contradictory information, a multi-analytical approach is needed. Using these techniques it has been shown that bone mineral rapidly dissolves in acidic solutions, buffering the acidity. As a result, collagen is left exposed and also breaks down leading to the loss of bio-archaeological information. The effects of pH on wood degradation are more subtle, but burial experiments show that drying out of the burial environment can have a severely detrimental effect on the survival of structural polymers in wood. Analysis of material excavated from Star Carr has shown that preservation differs across the site. For bone this is closely related to the geochemical conditions. It seems likely that bone in the current state of preservation would quickly deteriorate further at the low sediment pH recorded. Due to the localised differences in geochemistry and organic preservation across the site, any mitigation strategies aimed at slowing organic decay need to carefully consider all material that may yet be buried, and their varying states of diagenesis. Rapid changes in both materials (bone and wood) following excavation have also been observed. It is recommended that post-excavation strategies be designed to slow or stop these changes.

Abstract:
STF is a large ensemble work in three movements: "Fatwa," "Hitchens," and "Albino Sex." It is scored for piano, double bass, cello, viola, violin, French horn, clarinet in Bb, bass clarinet in Bb, flute, baritone, tenor, alto, soprano, narrator, and electronics. Its underlying concept is how religious worldviews can collide with freedom of speech, atheism, and fundamental human rights. In extreme cases, zealots will interpret disease as evidence of divine intervention or even demand the death of blasphemers. The text in the first movement, “Fatwa,” expresses freedom of speech and incorporates passages from Salman Rushdie’s “The Satanic Verses.” The second movement, “Hitchens,” centers on atheism and incorporates two audio excerpts from Christopher Hitchens’s lecture at the 2009 Festival of Dangerous Ideas. In the final movement, “Albino Sex,” I construct a narrative using media headlines, paraphrased biblical verses, and my own text to depict the human rights crisis during the 1980s A.I.D.S. epidemic. Various organizational approaches to text and pitch distinguish one movement from the other; the three movements cohere through unifying devices that I draw from set theory.

Abstract:
A steady-state model for the calculation of temperature and pressure distributions, and heat and work balance for the STAR-LM and the STAR-H2 systems was developed. The STAR-LM system is designed for electricity production and consists of the lead cooled reactor on natural circulation and the supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle. The STAR-H2 system uses the same reactor which is coupled to the hydrogen production plant, the Brayton cycle, and the water desalination plant. The Brayton cycle produces electricity for the on-site needs. Realistic modules for each system component were developed. The model also performs design calculations for the turbine and compressors for the CO2 Brayton cycle. The model was used to optimize the performance of the entire system as well as every system component. The size of each component was calculated. For the 400 MWt reactor power the STAR-LM produces 174.4 MWe (44% efficiency) and the STAR-H2 system produces 7450 kg H2/hr. The steady state model was used to conduct quasi-static passive load follow analysis. The control strategy was developed for each system; no control action on the reactor is required. As a main safety criterion, the peak cladding temperature is used. It was demonstrated that this temperature remains below the safety limit during both normal operation and load follow.

Abstract:
This work presents modeling, implementation, testing and simulation of a real-time attitude estimator using extended Kalman filter (FKE), applied to a three-axis air-bearing platform controlled by gas jet actuators. The goal of this work is to obtain an attitude determination algorithm that can replace the attitude estimate from the embedded inertial unit, currently in use by the platform electronics. Two models of estimators were implemented in MATLAB environment: in the first one, the state vector is composed only by the quaternions of the attitude, and in the second, the state vector is composed by quaternions and biases of the three gyroscopes. These estimators were tested using data from the sensors of the platforms inertial unit, and the results were compared with the attitude estimation sent by the internal attitude solution of the inertial unit. Finally, tests of the two FKE algorithms were performed in the simulation model of the air-bearing platform. Both Kalman filter-based estimators were successful in the attitude determination process, both in the tests using real data and in the simulation of control of the air-bearing platform. The proposed bias estimation functioned in a degraded way for the cases tested. We then hypothesized the reasons for this performance, and the convenience of estimating them in the proposed application.

Abstract:
We present a model that unifies the cosmic star formation rate (CSFR), obtained through the hierarchical structure formation scenario, with the (Galactic) local star formation rate (SFR). It is possible to use the SFR to generate a CSFR mapping through the density probability distribution functions (PDFs) commonly used to study the role of turbulence in the star-forming regions of the Galaxy. We obtain a consistent mapping from redshift z 20 up to the present (z = 0). Our results show that the turbulence exhibits a dual character, providing high values for the star formation efficiency (h"i 0.32) in the redshift interval z 3.5−20 and reducing its value to h"i = 0.021 at z = 0. The value of the Mach number (Mcrit), from which h"i rapidly decreases, is dependent on both the polytropic index (􀀀) and the minimum density contrast of the gas. We also derive Larsons first law associated with the velocity dispersion (hVrmsi) in the local star formation regions. Our model shows good agreement with Larsons law in the 0.1 − 30pc range (when our model is compared to the observational data), providing typical temperatures T0 2−50K for the gas associated with star formation. As a consequence, dark matter halos of great mass could contain a number of halos of much smaller mass, and be able to form structures similar to globular clusters. Thus, Larsons law emerges as a result of the very formation of large-scale structures, which in turn would allow the formation of galactic systems, including our Galaxy.

Abstract:
