Abstract:
A qualitative study of how Småland local media depict Florence Stephen's declaration of invalidity This is a study that deals with the way in which Florence Stephen's declaration of affairs is viewed from the perspective of the local press. Previous research done in the field shows that Stephen was declared invalid on February 23, 1957, and the proposal for this was already taken on October 27, 1956. To complete the study, a qualitative text analysis has been conducted. This has been done with help from the newspapers Smålandsposten, Kronobergaren and Växjöbladet. Lukes and Focault's power perspective has been used as theoretical tools to analyze the results of the study. The result of the study shows that the papers depict the course starting from the first hearing on January 17, 1957 until Stephens asks himself unauthorized. Until her declaration of confidentiality, the newspapers write partly why the decision on her declaration of invalidity was taken and partly who made the decision. In newspapers, it is also possible to read that Stephen opposed the decision and fought for his authority. In addition, historical perspectives are presented regarding the negative development that occurred during her time as a user owner.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate how Joseph Stephens, who was the owner of the Huseby Estate between the years 1867 - 1934, saw the foreign trade as an opportunity to build up the economy of Huseby bruk when he came back to Sweden from India during the summer 1869. The manor, which is located in the south of Sweden, was in a poor condition when he returned but from that summer, he could for the first time work fulltime with the manor he had bought. The source material of this study is from the Huseby archives in the Linnaeus University, which in my investigation consists of correspondents to his father George Stephens and business contacts who were located abroad. The source material is also consisting of accounts from the bookkeeping of the company. The correspondents show how Joseph Stephens is patient with abroad market and sees the potential in it, even if the market in Sweden is easier to make profits in at the moment and has cheaper transport expenses. It also shows that he is making up plans for selling his products to the international market, even if there are complications that makes the market hard to get profit from. According to the accounts of Huseby bruk, most of the trade abroad went to Copenhagen. Another important city on the market was London. However, it seems like the company did not export any products to India between the years 1869 - 1875. The products which dominated the export were iron and wood products.

Baker, Liv. "Translocation stress in Stephens' kangaroo rats : how individual variation influences success." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45996.

Full text
Abstract:
Wildlife translocation involves the relocation of free-ranging animals from one area to another. It is commonly used to combat species loss. However, its outcomes are poor; some reviews put the success rate as low as 10-25%. This is likely influenced by a lack of attention to individuals. Translocations involve some combination of stressors (e.g., capture, captivity, monitoring, environmental change). Although animals have evolved behavioural and physiological mechanisms to manage challenges, the combination of stressors during translocation can compromise these coping mechanisms. Personality should have significance for translocations as individuals with certain personality types and life experience may handle translocation stressors better than others. The aim of this thesis was to profile individual Stephens’ kangaroo rats (SKR), Dipodomys stephensi, and to assess their responses to translocation. To do this a combination of behavioural and physiological measures were used. Personality types were identified using quantitative and qualitative measures from mirror-image stimulation and predator scent tests done while animals were held before release (Chapters 3 and 5). A radioimmunoassay specific for cortisol in SKR fecal extract was developed and adrenocortical activity (cortisol) in response to predator urine was reliably assessed in fecal samples (Chapter 2). Fecal cortisol concentration (FCC) was used to measure the effect of translocation stressors, including the use of radio transmitters (Chapters 4 and 5). Survival was affected by individual variation in behavioural and physiological responses (Chapter 5). Assertiveness, Excitability and Persistence were identified as three personality dimensions. Overall, FCC increased in response to temporary captivity. Radio transmitters caused a short-term elevation in FCC 6 days after attachment but not at 30 days. Survival to 1 month was similar for animals with and without transmitters. SKR with lower Assertiveness and Excitability and with higher basal FCC had higher short-term survival. Higher Assertiveness was correlated with lower basal FCC. SKR that had a smaller change in FCC during captivity had higher long-term survival. This study lends convincing support that variation in personality affects how well an animal copes with translocation and has consequences for survival. Knowing how to manage different personality types may determine how successfully a translocated population establishes itself.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to study the gender system and structures for a married couple in the late 1900-centery in the southern part of Sweden. More precisely the gender system of the lord Joseph Stephens and his wife the lady of the castle Elisabeth Stephens that lived in Huseby mansion during this time. I attend to do a qualitative textual analysis of the couple's correspondence from 1880-1900. I will interpret the results based on a theory of gender and gender division between the genders and the concepts of the private and the public sphere for the two genders. The results shows that the couple for most of the time has a gender based division between themselves were Elisabeth attempts to the privatesphere and Joseph for the public. Joseph does not involve Elisabeth with the operation of the estate or with his political duties. The way they appeals to each other can also implie that Joseph is superior to Elisabeth. The couple has also embraced the bourgeois ideal of love that means togetherness and exclusiveness in the relationship. But the result also shows that the division is not that fixed for the man in the relationship. Joseph can also enter the private and the female sphere which can implie that he is in control of the gender relationship and thinks that this is the best way to make sure the gender roles are kept safe which also will secure his superior position.

Abstract:

Cole, Ryan Andrew. "Map-based Probabilistic Infinite Slope Analysis of the Stephens Creek Watershed, Portland, Oregon." PDXScholar, 2013. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/625.

Full text
Abstract:
The Stephens Creek Watershed in southwest Portland, Oregon was chosen by the city as a pilot project for urban stream restoration efforts, and the infiltration of stormwater was identified as a potential restoration strategy. The Stephens Creek Watershed has historically been known to be unstable during high precipitation events (Burns, 1996), and the need to address the response of slope stability to anthropogenically-driven changing groundwater conditions is the focus of this study. Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and geotechnical data from the City of Portland were employed to create a high resolution (0.84 m2) physics-based probabilistic slope stability model for this watershed, using the map-based probabilistic infinite slope analysis program PISA-m (Haneberg, 2007). Best and worst case models were run using fully dry and fully saturated soil conditions, respectively. Model results indicate that 96.3% of the watershed area had a probability [less than or equal to] 0.25 that the slope factor of safety (FOS) was [less than or equal to] 1 for fully dry conditions, compared to 76.4% for fully saturated conditions. Areas that had a probability [greater than or equal to] 0.25 that the slope factor of safety (FOS) was [less than or equal to] 1 were found to occur mainly along cut/fill slopes as well as within the deeply incised canyons of Stephens Creek and its tributaries. An infiltration avoidance map was derived to define areas that appear to be unsuitable for infiltration. Based on these results, it is recommended that stormwater continues to be directed to existing sewer infrastructure and that the "storm water disconnect" restoration approach not be used by the city.

Abstract:
The collecting of different material cultures has been portrayed as a popular lifestyle among folk researchers. The Sami culture has not been treated differently. George Stephens (1813-1895) was a professor at Uppsala and Copenhagen University and owner at Huseby in Småland. The essay has identified that a large number of the artefacts categorised as Sami were in fact of non-Sami background. George Stephens left the collection to the future without describing the origins of the Sami collection, leaving only notes for us to analyze. His work of historical melodies would significantly assist our searching for the truth concerning the objects including experts pinpointing the objects creators and cultural identity throughout Sápmi and history. This essay is an attempt to clarify both the cultural and historical background of said objects and to apply the Actor-Network Theory on the collections founder George Stephens. The study is based on Tetteris method of materialistisc analyzation aswell as Pearces method of specialist inclusion. The studies theory is based of Latour and Laws Actor-Network Theory, also called ANT, which maps relationships of people and intentions. A collectors network of contacts is vast, so a narrowing a network to George Stephens contacts creates the best possible approach to anwser the studies questions.

The rusty grain beetle, Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) (Coleoptera: Laemophloeidae), is a very common worldwide pest of stored grains. The orientation of C. ferrugineus beetles to various semiochemicals was studied in both the laboratory and field. In laboratory experiments glass two-choice pitfall bioassay dishes were used. Mixed-sex populations of beetles responded positively and significantly to cucujolide I and II separately and in combination compared to controls. Bioassays using the two aggregation pheromones of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae). Dominicalure 1 and 2 together elicited unexpected significant attractive responses by C. ferrugineus as did assays with the synthetic pheromones from other species. Bioassays showed that C. ferrugineus were not attracted to either corn meal or rolled oats, but they were attracted to commercial grain-based lures and also to ethanol, a natural fermentation product from grains. Several bioassays were conducted to test the attractiveness of naturally produced beetle volatiles to C. ferrugineus, but these showed no orientation to volatiles from either the beetles or their food only. Field tests were conducted in Kansas to test attractiveness of the synthetic pheromones cucujolide I and II in lures together with wheat versus wheat only as a control using Lindgren funnel traps. Field tests in 2014 with cucujolide II pheromone lures showed a significant response by feral C. ferrugineus when tested against wheat. Other field tests to examine dispersal of C. ferrugineus relative to grain storages showed that more C. ferrugineus were caught on the western side of grain bins compared to other cardinal directions at two different locations. Results from field and laboratory studies suggest that semiochemical-based tools can be developed to study dispersal behavior in field populations of C. ferrugineus.

Harris, Daniel. "Multi-Scale Morphodynamic Assessment of an Embayed Low Energy Estuarine Beach, Shoal Bay, Port Stephens, NSW." Thesis, School of Geosciences, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/5772.

Full text
Abstract:
Low-energy shorelines are common coastal features, with their combined length exceeding that of high energy coastlines. Yet the morphodynamics of such systems are poorly understood with only a few process based assessments of low-energy environments. Shoal Bay is a low-energy embayed estuarine beach in the Port Stephens estuary, located on a high-energy coast. It has been undergoing erosion for the past 40 years and its cross-shore extent is associated with a well developed flood-tide delta (FTD). This study investigates the morphodynamics of Shoal Bay beach over multiple temporal scales. Short term studies included nearshore hydrodynamic (wave and current) surveys during summer and winter. Sediment entrainment calculations were used in the nearshore current analysis and allowed for more accurate assessment of longshore sediment transport. Medium term assessment involved the analysis of morphological change from one year of beach surveys as well as an evaluation storm effects from hourly offshore wave data. Historic storm data, sediment characterisation and 43 years of aerial photography were used in the long term morphodynamic analysis. Westward trending sediment pathways were found at all three time-scales. Short term studies indicate that under modal conditions westward transport of sediment occurs. This corresponded with accumulation of sediment in the west. Severe high-energy events triggered considerable erosion along the entire beach. Detailed analysis of beach recovery after severe events could not be made but negligible recovery is observed over one year of surveys. Significant erosion and shoreline recession was found in the medium and long term morphological analysis as was shoreline rotation. Medium term shoreline retreat was caused by high-energy stochastic events; however it seems unlikely that these events are the sole cause of long term shoreline retreat. A reduction in sediment input as well as reworking of the FTD are proposed to be the long term processes driving 43 years of chronic shoreline retreat. The results of this study represent a scientific contribution to the morphodynamics of low-energy beaches and they are relevant for the future shoreline management of Shoal Bay and other drowned river valleys on high-energy coasts.

Abstract:
Florence Stephens became the owner of Huseby bruk, an industry located in Småland, 1934 while she was just over 50 years old, she inherited it from her late father. Huseby bruk, while under the ownership her father Huseby bruk had a thriving economy and expanded. When he died his daughter Florence Stephens took over. Missing formal education regarding how to manage an industry led to a declining economy and later one of the bigger economic scandals in the county. One of the outcomes of the scandal was that Florence Stephens was declared a legally incompetent person and she remained so in 19 years. This study aims to fill in the gaps of studies regarding her attempts to regain her legal competence and in the legal dispute about arranging an administrator for Florence Stephens that followed. Further this study analyzes her right of possession to Huseby bruk and if she had all the rights she was entitled. The source material chosen for this study is documents left over from her cases located at Linnéuniversitetet in the Huseby archives. The result reached by the study was that Florence Stephens regained her legally competence 1976 which led to a response from Alvesta chief guardian requesting that this only happens if an administrator is assigned. This lead to a long lawsuit ending in October 1978. Regarding her possession of Huseby have the study concluded that she still had the rights but they were not absolute.

Abstract:
This research project investigates the ways in which violence in 21st Century texts is rehearsed and performed. Inspired in part by the progressive work in intimacy designed to safeguard the performer, this project investigates potential strategies to minimise the risks performers face when staging violence. As well as minimising the risk of post-dramatic stress caused by performing psychologically demanding roles, this project also addresses actor agency and uneven power dynamics between director and actor which may exacerbate this risk. Being a creative practice, the focus is on the balancing of the ethical considerations one should have when working with violence and the creative outcomes a director needs to pursue in order to present the violent material in the way that best supports the vision for the work. These two areas need to be explored in parallel to gauge the relevance of the techniques explored in relationship to each other. Valuable findings would need to satisfy the modern expectations for both creative and ethical considerations, as well as proving useful in a staging process. To explore this in practice, the project took a practice-led research methodology. The final product of this project took the form of a staging of Simon Stephens’s 2006 play Motortown. The staging was the culmination of a rehearsal period with a cast of actors, simulating the requirements of professional practice, but also allowing the necessary room required for experimentation and exploration in a research project without the associated pressures of economic or critical merit. This process allowed an exploration of strategies and techniques gleaned from a variety of performance practices. The techniques and strategies implemented in the practical element of this project were examined and discussed to comment on their value in rehearsing and performing violence in a 21st Century text. Ultimately, a refocusing of established practice using existing methods was employed to minimise these risks and recommendations for development of these strategies is discussed.

Stephens, Ryan A. "Field Algae Measurements Using Empirical Correlations at Deer Creek Reservoir." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2722.

Full text
Abstract:
Deer Creek Reservoir in Utah has a history of high algae concentrations. Despite recent nutrient reduction efforts, seasonal algae continue to present problems. Cost effective, accurate, and comprehensive monitoring is important to understand the reservoir processes driving this problem and characterizing the algae spatial and temporal distributions are an important part of this effort. Current laboratory methods for accurately measuring algae are expensive and time consuming and are based on water samples taken in the field and transported to the laboratory. This approach only provides data for relatively few point samples because of the time and expense of sample collection and analysis. These relatively few samples do not describe the complex spatial and temporal trends in the algal data. Algae exhibit non-uniform distributions, especially in the vertical direction. In situ probes are able to measure chlorophyll-a and provide a less expensive measuring alternative than laboratory methods. These probes provide relatively quick, high resolution vertical profile measurements, which allows for more comprehensive horizontal and temporal sampling. To have confidence in the probe data, good correlations between in situ chlorophyll-a measurements and laboratory algae or chlorophyll measurements are important, but these correlations can be reservoir and time dependant as reservoir conditions change. Therefore, they must be developed for each study site. This study reports on efforts at Deer Creek Reservoir to develop these correlations and provide a general description of the dynamic reservoir algal processes. I found that chlorophyll-a is weakly correlated to most algae species in the reservoir. However, it correlated well with total phytoplankton biovolume and the dominant algal species, which for this study was the diatom. Variations in correlation strength among the several algae species was assumed to most likely be affected by environmental factors, sample methods, algae species diversity, and the accuracy of the optical chlorophyll-a sensor. The data analysis indicate that the field methods used to obtain laboratory samples may have been a significant source of error because of the difficulty of matching the location of a probe measurement to the location of a sample. Field samples were not taken at the same depths as probe measurements and field samples from two locations were either mixed before laboratory analysis or the sample was a composite over a 2-meter range. Based on my observations, I have made several recommendations to improve the accuracy of the correlation between algae and chlorophyll-a.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis reports an investigation of the double-nesting phenomenon, a unique pattern of anomalous, protracted breeding, reported in seabirds from mid-western and south-western Australia. In particular, it deals with the Crested Tern Sterna bergii Lichtenstein and the Silver Gull Larus novaehollandiae Stephens, two related lariform seabirds which nest in sympatry, and possibly associatively, in the Fremantle area of south-western Australia. Both species have protracted breeding seasons in the study area, superficially similar in timing and duration, and therefore provided useful subjects for a comparative study of their breeding biology. From 1979 to 1984, the reproductive cycles of the two species were examined in detail. Emphasis was placed on determining the timing and periodicity of breeding, both at the population and at the individual level, and on determining those factors involved in the ’proximate' control of the reproductive cycle. The results showed that, despite superficial similarities in breeding seasons, there were fundamental differences in biology between the two species, particularly with respect to the influence of environmental ‘proximate’ factors. These contrasts are interpreted primarily in terms of the different evolutionary origins of the two species, although the various constraints on the reproductive cycle, which are imposed by their differing nesting adaptations and feeding behaviour, are also discussed. Models of the reproductive cycle at the individual level, and of the breeding season(s) at the population level, are developed for both species. Using data for some other seabird species breeding in south-western Australia, the Crested Tern and Silver Gull models are incorporated in a general explanation of ‘double-nesting’. The views presented not only provide some insight into a unique, localised phenomenon but should also lead to a re-examination of conventional ideas about seabird breeding seasons generally.

Abstract:
Anyone who is familiar with Margaret Mitchell’s life and her novel, Gone with the Wind, should notice that Mitchell’s work in some fashion parallels events from her life. Exactly how and why these parallels function, however, has been the subject for much scholarly debate. In my thesis, I examine Mitchell’s biography to get closer to the truth of the events in her life up to the publication of her novel. I then synthesize this information with a side-by-side analysis of some important figures in Mitchell’s life and characters from her novel; from there, I provide a feminist critique of selected characters, relationships between those characters, and scenes from the novel. In particular, I focus upon Mitchell’s relationship with her mother, Maybelle, and how this relationship compares with Scarlett O’Hara’s relationship with her mother, Ellen.

It also examined the effect of all the above factors on the continuing success of students in the course. While significant differences in first-time performance were found between ESL and non- ESL students, no differences were found between the other pairings. No differences were found between any of the groups in the continuing success in the course. The KSW Test, while being an indicator of first year success, was not a strong enough model to be able to be used as a predictive tool. The demographic and previous academic data from students recently at High School, in particular, the Tertiary Entrance Score, level of mathematics studied, and previous computing study, were found to be more useful as an indicator of success in fust year, explaining 53% of the variation in h a 1 unit score. In addition, 67% of the variation in continuing success in their course was also explained by the Tertiary Entrance Score, ASAT verbal and ASAT quantitative scores.

Besson, Anne Amelie, and n/a. "Effects of cool temperature on egg incubation, thermoregulation and physiological performance of tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) : implications for conservation programmes." University of Otago. Department of Zoology, 2009. http://adt.otago.ac.nz./public/adt-NZDU20090713.160643.

Full text
Abstract:
Tuatara (Sphenodon spp.) were once widespread over both the North and the South Islands of New Zealand approximately 1000 years ago but are now restricted to offshore islands due to introduced predators and habitat destruction. The survival of tuatara is now threatened by climate change because of isolation on islands that prevent them from migrating to cooler regions, and by their limited capacity to adapt due to their long life span and low genetic diversity. The thermal suitability of cooler regions for future translocations could be the key for tuatara conservation. The overall aim of the study was to determine the effect of cool temperature on the physiology, behaviour and egg incubation of Cook Strait tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus). As well answering specific questions about tuatara and their adaptation to cool temperature this study aimed at answering general questions about the behavioural and evolutionary ecology of reptiles. I first compared the preferred body temperature, feeding responses and tolerance to cold temperature of tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) with three lizard species that inhabit the Otago region of southern New Zealand: Hoplodactylus maculatus, Naultinus gemmeus and Oligosoma maccanni. As well as testing the co-adaptation hypothesis between preferred body temperature and physiological performance of reptiles, I wanted to determine whether tuatara (which are planned to be reintroduced from a warmer site to the Otago region) have similar responses to cool temperature as do Otago lizard species. I found that tuatara show responses to cold temperatures similar to those of lizards from southern New Zealand, suggesting that if tuatara are translocated outside of their geographical range, they are likely to survive. I then tested if tuatara were capable of modifying their thermoregulatory behaviour if translocated to a cooler region. To do so, I conducted a laboratory experiment in which tuatara were provided with three thermal treatments corresponding to the thermal environments they would experience in their current habitat and the proposed reintroduction site. Contrary to the prediction of the cost-benefit model of thermoregulation, tuatara became active thermoregulators when the thermal quality of the habitat decreased. The results suggest that the model is less applicable to cold-adapted species and that if translocated to cooler regions, tuatara will be able to adjust their thermoregulatory behaviour to their thermal environment. Tuatara are temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) reptiles and their translocation to cooler regions could have an dramatic impact on the sex ratio of new populations. To determine if potentially lower incubation temperature would be a limiting factor for the reintroduction of tuatara, I translocated eggs to the proposed reintroduction site. Some tuatara embryos developed at the site (and later hatched in the laboratory), but incubation lasted longer than in natural nests and all hatchlings were female. This trend observed in biased sex ratio might change in the context of climate change as an increase of soil temperature by 3C would allow the production of males at the proposed site. The present study demonstrates that the translocation of tuatara further south, outside of their current geographical range, is possible and recommended. Tuatara show similar responses to cool temperatures compared with lizards that live in southern New Zealand, they can also adjust their thermoregulatory behaviour if translocated to cooler habitats, and tuatara embryos could potentially develop successfully in cooler regions. The greatest chance for the future survival of tuatara and TSD species in general, lies in translocation to other locations that are thermally suitable.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of administrative discipline procedure, teacher/student relationship, student achievement, student attendance, and student conduct on the decision by students of Stephens County High School to drop out of school. Results indicated that teacher/student relationship does influence the decision to drop out. Further, these teachers are more likely to be female. Administrative discipline procedure can affect the decision to drop out. While student achievement does not directly affect but plays an important role in decision making to drop out, attendance will hinder the motive to continue. Student conduct had no effect on the decision to drop out. Gender, race, and socioeconomic status were confounded in the results.

Abstract:

In February 2005, a collection predominantly containing medieval ballads was found in the library of Växjö. The collectors were mainly George Stephens, originally from Scotland, and Gunnar Olof Hyltén-Cavallius, both active in Småland in the nineteenth century. In connection with an intital inventory of the material, Magnus Gustafsson, ethnomusicologist at Smålands Musikarkiv, marked ballads of uncertain origin with a question mark.

The purpose of this essay is to investigate 22 of these marked ballads. To be able to compare them with other material we have developed a method to identify differences. By means of the method both the text and the melody are compared and in addition the differences in terms of quality and quantity are assessed. We have compared the collection, named Växjö Stadsbiblioteks Stephenssamling (VSS), with the Swedish edition of medieval ballads, Sveriges Medeltida Ballader (SMB). In the comparison, a ballad forgotten since the mid nineteenth century was retrieved .

Abstract:
This work concerns the study of the experimental displacement fields in the elastic cracked plates, loaded in mode I. The experimental displacement extraction is realised from a method of extraction from in the single picture. The first part of this memory, concerns the study of the displacements fields in the vicinity of the crack tip for stationary cracks. The grids method is used to determine the in-plan displacement fields on the free surface. At the same time as experimental tries, a finite element model is making to validate numerical conditions in the borders and displacement empirical formulations. These formulations characterize in plan displacements and gradients displacements necessary for the J-integral calculation. The second part of this memory concerns the study of the 3D and transient effects by confrontation of the theoretical formulation and the experimental data of the out-of-plane displacement for a propagating crack. The determination of the absolute out-of-plane displacements by Michelson interferometer is not directly, the purpose of a photomultiplier and the subtraction of an initial relief is necessary. The detachment zone according to the crack propagation velocity (V) us incites to develop an empirical formulation of out-of-plane displacements with minimised from the experimental results

Abstract:
The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) is a genomic region in chromosome 6 which has been consistently found to be associated with the risk of developing virtually all common autoimmune diseases. Although its importance in disease pathogenesis has been known for decades, efforts to disentangle the roles of the classical human leukocyte antigens (HLA) and other variants responsible for the susceptibility to disease have often met with limited success, owing to the complex structure and extreme heterogeneity of the region. In this thesis, I interrogate the MHC for association with three common autoimmune diseases, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriasis and multiple sclerosis, with the aim of confirming the previously-reported associations and of identifying novel ones. To do so, I employ a systematic, joint analysis of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and HLA allele data, in a logistic regression framework, using a recently developed algorithm to predict the HLA alleles for samples where such information is unavailable. To ensure the reliability of the analysis, I apply stringent quality control procedures and integrate over the uncertainty of the HLA allele predictions. Moreover, I resolve the haplotype phase of individuals from the HapMap project to create reliable reference panels, used in both HLA prediction and in quality control procedures. By directly testing HLA subtypes for association with the disease, the power to detect such associations is increased. I present the results of the analysis on the three disease phenotypes and discuss the evidence for important novel findings amongst both SNPs and HLA alleles in two of the diseases. In the final part of this thesis, I introduce a novel, model-based approach to detect inconsistencies in the data and show how it can be used to flag problematic SNPs which conventional quality control procedures may fail to identify.

Abstract:
Breathing requires a fine coordination of the motor command distributed to the various respiratory muscles, including upper airway (UAM) and pump muscles. The differential respiratory modulation of the UAM and the diaphragm (DIA) muscles is poorly understood although it is relevant for the understanding of both physiological and pathological conditions such as sleep-wake stages transitions and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). In this context, we investigated the respiratory effects induced by high-frequency stimulation (HFS) of various nuclei of the medullary raphe (MR) or by pharmacological manipulations of the serotonergic transmission in the anesthetized rat. Our results showed that a differential respiratory modulation of UAM/DIA occurred after HFS of Raphe Pallidus (RPa) and ventral Raphe Obscurus (vROb), as well as after injections of agonist and antagonist acting on 5HT1A receptors. Experiments based on c-Fos expression revealed several brainstem structures potentially involved in these respiratory effects. These findings support the hypothesis that MR and serotonergic system are key structure in differential respiratory modulation of UAM during sleep-wake states transitions. We explored embryonic cells originated from ventral mesencephal and transplanted within substantia nigra in a model of Parkinson disease by using extracellular electrophysiology. Two months after transplantation, transplanted cells showed electrophysiological characteristics of dopaminergic-like neurons and orthodromic and antidromic stimulations also suggested functional recovery of nigro-striatal loop

Ball, Stephen. "Investigating telemonitoring technologies for the detection of activities and the application of BLE in smart homes for elderly independent living." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2017. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/123510/1/Stephen%20Ball%20Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to the rise in the elderly population and the prevalence of chronic diseases, healthcare organizations around the world are faced with an economic burden which will continue to grow. For this reason there is an urgent demand to reduce the intake of elders in hospitals and nursing homes by allowing them to live independently for greater lengths of time. In response to this demand, researchers are strongly focusing on 'telemonitoring', which is the use of information technology (IT) to monitor the health status of an individual from a remote location (e.g. their home). The first aim of this thesis was to investigate how telemonitoring technologies can detect elderly activities for health assessment purposes. To assess a patient's health status holistically, a wide variety of factors needed be considered by practitioners. Currently many telemonitoring technologies in research have addressed these factors/assessments by monitoring elderly activities. However based on the literature reviews, researchers have not been able to develop a comprehensive understanding of how these technologies support each assessment. Therefore the first contribution in chapter 3 of this thesis addresses this gap. A literature review was conducted where 215 telemonitoring technologies were identified from 82 papers, published between 2000 and 2016. Six assessments which involve monitoring of activities were identified as (1) mobility, (2) nutrition, (3) safety, (4) cognitive, (5) social, and (6) routine. All included technologies were categorized into six tables according to the assessment that they supported. From assessing the contents of these tables, it was found that a significant portion of ITs relate to mobility, nutritional, safety and routine assessments. Many of the studies were found to assess technologies inside of laboratory setting and still require improvement before they are suited for real world application. It also found that many of the technologies were not equipped with wireless communication. In recent years recently have been focusing been integrating wireless sensing technology into telemonitoring applications. Many of these wireless technologies are small, unobtrusive, and usually need to be powered by small batteries (e.g. coin cell) which have limited capacity. For this reason, researchers have had difficulties prolonging battery life to a duration that is practical. However the recent release of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has the potential of resolving this issue due to its power saving qualities. The 2nd aim of this thesis is to assess the performance of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) in telemonitoring frameworks using advertising mode. Advertising mode is often used for device discovery purposes, however it can also be used to send context data without the need for device connection establishment. This method has received little investigation from researchers and yet it has the potential of offering advantages such as reduction in power consumption and manufacturing costs. Therefore in this thesis, the performance of BLE advertising mode was used within two telemonitoring applications. Firstly, a new device called 'BLUESOUND' is proposed. The device uses ultrasound sensing technology which can efficiently differentiate multiple residents in a home environment based on their height. The device consists of three sensing/communication modules: A Passive Infrared (PIR) occupancy module, an ultrasound array module and a BLE communication module. The PIR occupancy module is used to detect walking direction, while the ultrasound array measures the resident's height. The combination of these two technologies can also be used to detect a resident's velocity. BLE advertising mode is used to communicate acquired data to a smart phone gateway/database. A new embedded algorithm was able to increase the energy efficiency of the identification technology. Comprehensive modelling and experimentation was undertaken to assess the performance the BLUESOUND device. The BLUESOUND device was able to distinguish between multiple resident identities by measuring height accurately. Currently researchers have developed various wearable ECG monitors as there is a demand to detect the onset of cardiac disease earlier in the elderly population. However most of these devices have only lasted a couple of days on a coin cell battery which is not practical. Therefore the performance of BLE advertising mode was explored using a virtual BLE based ECG model in MATLAB. To further minimize power consumption, an ECG extraction technique (based on the 'So and Chan' algorithm [1]) was used in the model to extract some of the most significant points on the signal. Based on three simulation trails, ECG data was transferred to a scanning device with high accuracy (average of 99.62%). It was estimated that the virtual system is approximately 13 times more energy efficient compared to sending ECG stream data continuously when a connection is established.

Abstract:
This thesis examined the role and experiences of paramedics in Queensland when they encounter children exposed to domestic violence. These children, who may also be at risk of other types of abuse and neglect, often require support and sometimes protection. Paramedics are frequently the first healthcare professionals who respond to victims of domestic violence, including the children in the family. This multi-disciplinary study examined law, policy and social science, and conducted a survey exploring the role and experiences of paramedics, and identified ways to improve policy and practice, and respond better to children who are exposed to domestic violence.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to undertake a comparative study of contemporary British and German-language playwriting, with an eye specifically towards possible reasons and solutions for the problematic situation of German-language playtexts in Britain. I will first conduct a stylistic analysis of a selection of British and German-language playwrights, focusing on the differences in representation of interiority through dialogue and narration. I will then introduce a phenomenological lens that will expand this literary analysis by looking at specific stagings of these texts, and at the use of gestures in particular. Tracing the performative implications of dialogue and narration in their relationship with gestures, I will suggest that while dialogue mostly requires metonymical gestures, the phenomenology of narration is better served by a more metaphoric use. This is followed by a chapter on translation, which will look at the specific problems and chances posed by narration and so-called ‘postdramatic’ plays in general. After these theoretical considerations, I will scrutinise my findings in a practical environment in two major steps. The first step is a comparative rehearsal observation of one German and one British director and their work with contemporary playtexts. My main question will be in how far the tendency towards dialogue in British plays and towards narration in German-language plays is matched by corresponding trends in the directors’ formal language. Furthermore, I will contextualise the work of these two directors in the larger field of directing in their respective countries. The second and final step of my practical investigation will be an implementation and testing of the previous theses in two directing projects of my own. I will again focus on rehearsal methodologies, attempting to find out which methodologies are particularly useful for the rehearsal of narrative playtexts and thereby hoping to formulate some first ideas for the specific requirements of German-language playtexts in a British context.

Abstract:
This thesis was an exploratory study into clerical sexual misconduct within the Roman Catholic Church. It sought to describe the experiences of women and men who, as adults, had experienced this form of professional misconduct. The findings were that clerical sexual misconduct involving adults is an unacknowledged, misinterpreted and harmful event, one involving the abuse of power and which leaves lifelong scars. Contrary to common thinking, these events were not affairs between equals, but violations of professional and religious duty. Survivors are seeking transparent and genuine acknowledgment of this reality in order for their lives to fully heal.
