Abstract:
In Deformity: An Essay (1754), William Hay offers an autobiographical account of his life as a hunchbacked member of the House of Commons, followed by an appendix, titled “My Case,” which details an experimental health regimen he adopted to treat the more quotidian ailment of chronic bladder stones. In an apparent disjunction with the preceding philosophical essay, “My Case” brings deformity into a medicalized, rather than humanized, register, crediting Joanna Stephens's controversial domestic remedy—and Hay's subsequent adjustment of it—with allowing him to write the text. This article compares the reception history of Stephens's recipe and Deformity: An Essay, examining why Stephens attracted censure whereas Hay garnered approval for endorsing the same basic treatment. Focusing on both Stephens's and Hay's gender-fluid personae, I argue that Hay, unlike Stephens, was able to demonstrate an unusually nimble approach to the eighteenth century's emergent categories of gender, because his deformity, gender, and class helped, rather than hindered, such persona making.

Abstract:
After 1850, the middle and working classes sought cultural education, which John Ruskin, among others, identified as a signifier of civilization and national greatness. Working Men’s Colleges, three 1870 university Slade Professorships in art history, proliferating art publications, and emerging regional museums offered opportunities to become conversant with visual art were then equated with social mobility and Englishness. Amid this cultural nationalism, critic F. G. Stephens’s 100+ Athenaeum series, “The Private Collections of England” (1873–1887), transformed collectors into national heroes. Scholars have noted the rising profile of collectors in 19th-century Europe and the US, in which Stephens’s series participated. Stephens detailed these collections’ expanded geography in England’s industrial north, turning local art collecting into a national, unifying force, a transformation made possible by his periodical serialization itself. These collectors, industrialists, merchants and bankers exemplified a new middle-class social, cultural and political authority. Most of them intended to bequeath their collections philanthropically to museums, thus shaping public tastes and the canon. They were personally and socially networked with artists and with each other, often working in complementary industries. Stephens interspersed his detailed descriptions of artworks with exhibition histories across translocal and transnational spaces, using the power of the press to weave a network between collectors and the public and a shared cultural history that endorsed collectors’ new public identity. However, Stephens also raised tensions about the geography of collecting, emphasizing collectors’ local places while presenting them as shaping a national space in their homogeneous taste and support of the same living artists and even the same pictorial subjects. In this way, Stephens straddled and flattened differences between national and regional market forces when, ironically, England’s art market was be coming increasingly international. This geographical layering is explored here in the context of the rise of provincial art institutions, the period’s notion of national schools and in anticipating the features of the current geohistory of art. I will explore two devices associated with the periodical press: ekphrasis and serialization, both of which Stephens deploys. Stephens wrote long ekphrases on works in these collection and omitted illustrations, noting in several comments that the Athenaeum’s middle-class readers were already familiar with artists’ works. This presumption and his use of 19th-century serialization, used by novelists whose chapters appeared across multiple issues of periodicals, combing to create a powerful force binding readers to his elevation of collectors’ social, national and cultural roles.

Abstract:
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was Irish writer James Joyces first published novel. The novel tells the story of the protagonist Stephen grow from a little child to an artist. Although Joyce uses third-person narration in the novel, he describes the surrounding society from Stephens point of view everywhere. When Stephen grew up, his thoughts gradually matured, and he gradually changed from obedience to rebellion. The stylistic features of the novel also changed a lot in this process. Corpus stylistics is a scientific stylistic research method which combines qualitative research with quantitative research. With the support of corpus stylistics, the author studies and analyzes the stylistic changes in the novels during Stephens childhood, adolescence and youth, and explains the causes of the corresponding characteristics. Through profound analysis, the author finally draws the conclusion: With the growth of the protagonist, the vocabulary of the novel becomes increasingly difficult and rich, the use of sentence grammar gradually becomes mature, and the difficulty of the text gradually increases. The style of the novel is closely related to the growth of the characters and the theme of each stage.

Abstract:
On June 9, 1860, the publishing firm of Irving P. Beadle and Company announced in the New York Daily Tribune the publication of their first dime novel, Ann S. Stephens's Malaeska: The Indian Wife of the White Hunter. The narrative was advertised as “the best story of the day,” and its writer as “the star of American authors.” Stephens, whose name is familiar today only to scholars of the dime novel, was indeed well known to the reading public around the mid-19th Century. She was on the editorial board of several magazines, including the illustrious Graham's Magazine. She had published her own journal, Mrs. Stephens Illustrated New Monthly. And she wrote for a plethora of popular magazines, among others the Columbian Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine, the Ladies' Wreath, Frank Leslie's Ladies' Gazette of Fashion, and Peterson's Magazine. Her 1854 urban melodrama Fashion and Famine had to be printed three times during the first month of publication to satisfy the demand of the public, and eventlually sold a record eighty thousand copies. Her historical novels, generally of European setting, were so successful that they were systematically printed in book form by the Philadelphia publisher T. B. Peterson after they had appeared serially in Charles J. Peterson's literary monthly. And Stephens had the sanction of the critics as well as the public: already in 1848 the American Literary Magazine had eulogized her by stating that “of the numerous female writers of our country, Mrs. Stephens is deservedly classed among the first.” Charles J. Peterson had declared in the pages of Graham's Magazine that “no writer, since Sir Walter Scott, had excelled her in … power of description.” And even Edgar Allan Poe had acknowledged that Stephens could “seize adroitly on salient incidents and present them with vividness to the eye,” was “not unskillful in delineation of character,” and could, in conclusion, be granted “the effervescence of high talent, if not exactly of genius.”

Abstract:
James Stephens (1880–1950) had a significant reputation during the interwar years, both as a poet and a writer of short stories. Combining a Revivalist interest in imaginative texts from Ireland’s past, with an instinct for social realism, Stephens created a distinctive and admired body of work and was the subject of significant critical attention in the decades following his death. This essay explores a little-known dimension of Stephens’ life and professional career – his relationship with his American patron, W. T. H. Howe (1868–1939). Howe was a supportive presence in Stephens’ life, hosting him at his home, ‘Freelands’, for extended periods and collaborating with him on a number of publishing projects. Using a range of archival sources, this essay considers the place of this relationship in Stephens’ career and the factors which led to its conclusion.

Abstract:
The Fourth Amendment provides for the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures. Search warrants may only be issued upon a finding of probable cause. This core tenet of our constitutional republic becomes progressively flexible with every development in Fourth Amendment interpretation. In Peffer v. Stephens, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit delivered the latest blow to constitutional rights that restrict the State from engaging in unprincipled searches. In an issue of first impression, the Sixth Circuit held that a criminal defendant’s alleged use of a computer during the commission of a crime was adequate probable cause to justify a search of the defendant’s home and a seizure of the technological equipment inside. Such a shortsighted justification fails to consider technological innovation, economic policy, and historical civil liberties. Peffer v. Stephens is the latest proof of the parasitic relationship between the law and technological advancement. As technology evolves, the law struggles to keep pace and resultingly impedes economic development. With the exponential growth of technology in the 21st century, a visionary approach to search and seizure law is necessary to promote economic innovation and to refrain from further dismantling Fourth Amendment protections.

Abstract:
A qualitative study of how Småland local media depict Florence Stephen's declaration of invalidity This is a study that deals with the way in which Florence Stephen's declaration of affairs is viewed from the perspective of the local press. Previous research done in the field shows that Stephen was declared invalid on February 23, 1957, and the proposal for this was already taken on October 27, 1956. To complete the study, a qualitative text analysis has been conducted. This has been done with help from the newspapers Smålandsposten, Kronobergaren and Växjöbladet. Lukes and Focault's power perspective has been used as theoretical tools to analyze the results of the study. The result of the study shows that the papers depict the course starting from the first hearing on January 17, 1957 until Stephens asks himself unauthorized. Until her declaration of confidentiality, the newspapers write partly why the decision on her declaration of invalidity was taken and partly who made the decision. In newspapers, it is also possible to read that Stephen opposed the decision and fought for his authority. In addition, historical perspectives are presented regarding the negative development that occurred during her time as a user owner.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate how Joseph Stephens, who was the owner of the Huseby Estate between the years 1867 - 1934, saw the foreign trade as an opportunity to build up the economy of Huseby bruk when he came back to Sweden from India during the summer 1869. The manor, which is located in the south of Sweden, was in a poor condition when he returned but from that summer, he could for the first time work fulltime with the manor he had bought. The source material of this study is from the Huseby archives in the Linnaeus University, which in my investigation consists of correspondents to his father George Stephens and business contacts who were located abroad. The source material is also consisting of accounts from the bookkeeping of the company. The correspondents show how Joseph Stephens is patient with abroad market and sees the potential in it, even if the market in Sweden is easier to make profits in at the moment and has cheaper transport expenses. It also shows that he is making up plans for selling his products to the international market, even if there are complications that makes the market hard to get profit from. According to the accounts of Huseby bruk, most of the trade abroad went to Copenhagen. Another important city on the market was London. However, it seems like the company did not export any products to India between the years 1869 - 1875. The products which dominated the export were iron and wood products.

Baker, Liv. "Translocation stress in Stephens' kangaroo rats : how individual variation influences success." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45996.

Full text
Abstract:
Wildlife translocation involves the relocation of free-ranging animals from one area to another. It is commonly used to combat species loss. However, its outcomes are poor; some reviews put the success rate as low as 10-25%. This is likely influenced by a lack of attention to individuals. Translocations involve some combination of stressors (e.g., capture, captivity, monitoring, environmental change). Although animals have evolved behavioural and physiological mechanisms to manage challenges, the combination of stressors during translocation can compromise these coping mechanisms. Personality should have significance for translocations as individuals with certain personality types and life experience may handle translocation stressors better than others. The aim of this thesis was to profile individual Stephens’ kangaroo rats (SKR), Dipodomys stephensi, and to assess their responses to translocation. To do this a combination of behavioural and physiological measures were used. Personality types were identified using quantitative and qualitative measures from mirror-image stimulation and predator scent tests done while animals were held before release (Chapters 3 and 5). A radioimmunoassay specific for cortisol in SKR fecal extract was developed and adrenocortical activity (cortisol) in response to predator urine was reliably assessed in fecal samples (Chapter 2). Fecal cortisol concentration (FCC) was used to measure the effect of translocation stressors, including the use of radio transmitters (Chapters 4 and 5). Survival was affected by individual variation in behavioural and physiological responses (Chapter 5). Assertiveness, Excitability and Persistence were identified as three personality dimensions. Overall, FCC increased in response to temporary captivity. Radio transmitters caused a short-term elevation in FCC 6 days after attachment but not at 30 days. Survival to 1 month was similar for animals with and without transmitters. SKR with lower Assertiveness and Excitability and with higher basal FCC had higher short-term survival. Higher Assertiveness was correlated with lower basal FCC. SKR that had a smaller change in FCC during captivity had higher long-term survival. This study lends convincing support that variation in personality affects how well an animal copes with translocation and has consequences for survival. Knowing how to manage different personality types may determine how successfully a translocated population establishes itself.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to study the gender system and structures for a married couple in the late 1900-centery in the southern part of Sweden. More precisely the gender system of the lord Joseph Stephens and his wife the lady of the castle Elisabeth Stephens that lived in Huseby mansion during this time. I attend to do a qualitative textual analysis of the couple's correspondence from 1880-1900. I will interpret the results based on a theory of gender and gender division between the genders and the concepts of the private and the public sphere for the two genders. The results shows that the couple for most of the time has a gender based division between themselves were Elisabeth attempts to the privatesphere and Joseph for the public. Joseph does not involve Elisabeth with the operation of the estate or with his political duties. The way they appeals to each other can also implie that Joseph is superior to Elisabeth. The couple has also embraced the bourgeois ideal of love that means togetherness and exclusiveness in the relationship. But the result also shows that the division is not that fixed for the man in the relationship. Joseph can also enter the private and the female sphere which can implie that he is in control of the gender relationship and thinks that this is the best way to make sure the gender roles are kept safe which also will secure his superior position.

Abstract:

Cole, Ryan Andrew. "Map-based Probabilistic Infinite Slope Analysis of the Stephens Creek Watershed, Portland, Oregon." PDXScholar, 2013. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/625.

Full text
Abstract:
The Stephens Creek Watershed in southwest Portland, Oregon was chosen by the city as a pilot project for urban stream restoration efforts, and the infiltration of stormwater was identified as a potential restoration strategy. The Stephens Creek Watershed has historically been known to be unstable during high precipitation events (Burns, 1996), and the need to address the response of slope stability to anthropogenically-driven changing groundwater conditions is the focus of this study. Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and geotechnical data from the City of Portland were employed to create a high resolution (0.84 m2) physics-based probabilistic slope stability model for this watershed, using the map-based probabilistic infinite slope analysis program PISA-m (Haneberg, 2007). Best and worst case models were run using fully dry and fully saturated soil conditions, respectively. Model results indicate that 96.3% of the watershed area had a probability [less than or equal to] 0.25 that the slope factor of safety (FOS) was [less than or equal to] 1 for fully dry conditions, compared to 76.4% for fully saturated conditions. Areas that had a probability [greater than or equal to] 0.25 that the slope factor of safety (FOS) was [less than or equal to] 1 were found to occur mainly along cut/fill slopes as well as within the deeply incised canyons of Stephens Creek and its tributaries. An infiltration avoidance map was derived to define areas that appear to be unsuitable for infiltration. Based on these results, it is recommended that stormwater continues to be directed to existing sewer infrastructure and that the "storm water disconnect" restoration approach not be used by the city.

Abstract:
The collecting of different material cultures has been portrayed as a popular lifestyle among folk researchers. The Sami culture has not been treated differently. George Stephens (1813-1895) was a professor at Uppsala and Copenhagen University and owner at Huseby in Småland. The essay has identified that a large number of the artefacts categorised as Sami were in fact of non-Sami background. George Stephens left the collection to the future without describing the origins of the Sami collection, leaving only notes for us to analyze. His work of historical melodies would significantly assist our searching for the truth concerning the objects including experts pinpointing the objects creators and cultural identity throughout Sápmi and history. This essay is an attempt to clarify both the cultural and historical background of said objects and to apply the Actor-Network Theory on the collections founder George Stephens. The study is based on Tetteris method of materialistisc analyzation aswell as Pearces method of specialist inclusion. The studies theory is based of Latour and Laws Actor-Network Theory, also called ANT, which maps relationships of people and intentions. A collectors network of contacts is vast, so a narrowing a network to George Stephens contacts creates the best possible approach to anwser the studies questions.

In Central Australian Basins Symposium IV. Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (PESA), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36404/nhnd6722.

Abstract:
The early Permian Patchawarra Formation is one of the principal gas producing intervals of the South Australian Cooper Basin (Government of South Australia., 2022). The gross depositional environment (GDE) for this interval is reported to be dominantly fluvial plain (Strong et al., 2002 and Stephens et al., 2014). However, recent logging and interpretation of 296 m of the Patchawarra Formation from seven wells (Dullingari 39, Fly Lake 2, Halsam 1, Le Chiffre 1, Moomba 194, Pando 1 and Talaq 1), from the South Australian Cooper Basin, indicate the presence of significant lacustrine depositional environments, including shoreface, possible lacustrine turbidites and potential incised valleys, all of which may alter exploration and development strategies.

Abstract:
Tissue crush injuries are more prevalent with laparoscopic surgery than open [1]. Injuries may become more frequent in robotic surgery, because force is often only evaluated by the visual deformation of the tissue [2]. A proposed solution by Sie et al. to mitigate these surgical errors is to create tissue-aware graspers which can be incorporated into existing surgical robots, such as the da Vinci [3]. Stephens et al. created a tissue-aware grasper using backend sensing on a da Vinci Si tool [4]. However, tissue identification can be further improved through properly understanding a dynamic da Vinci tool model. Therefore, instrumentation that can accurately and fully characterize existing robotic tools is needed. Various tool calibration set-ups have been created such as [5], which are not portable and often neglect dynamic ranges. The goal of this paper is to present a portable device that shows promise in capturing the dynamic range for da Vinci Si tools.

Stephens, Lyndon S., and Mark A. Casemore. "The Effect of Slot Length on Flux Distribution and Rotordynamic Coefficients in Magnetic Actuators Using a Boundary Perturbation Method." In ASME Turbo Expo 2000: Power for Land, Sea, and Air. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/2000-gt-0413.

Full text
Abstract:
In previous work (Stephens and Casemore, 1999), the authors presented an analytical method to compute the flux distribution and negative stiffness of magnetic actuators. The method uses Fourier series expansions to model current distributions and permanent magnets as sources of magnetomotive force (MMF) on the air gap boundary and then solves the Dirichlet boundary value problem (BVP) in the eccentric annulus for the MMF within the permanent magnet and air gap regions. The method is applicable to many common magnetic actuator designs but is limited to those with MMF sources that are located opposite of a smooth (unslotted) boundary. In this paper, the method is extended to remove this limitation and include the effect of slot length on flux distribution and rotordynamic coefficients. This is accomplished by adding a boundary perturbation step to the solution that accounts for the additional reluctance of the slots. The method is applied to a sample problem and is benchmarked against a finite element model. The results show good agreement between the two models up to a certain critical slot length. This critical slot length is shown to correspond to the traditional infinite slot length (that slot length beyond which no appreciable change in flux distribution occurs). The results indicate that slots in the stator have a significant impact on the negative stiffness and that the infinite slot length assumption is valid even for shallow and wide slots.

Baker, Michael. DTRS56-02-D-70036A Potential Impact Radius Formulae for Flammable Gases other than Natural Gas. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), June 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0012053.

Full text
Abstract:
The original derivation of the PIR formula referenced in 49 CFR 192 is contained in the Gas Research Institute (GRI) report by C-FER Technologies (C-FER), "A Model for Sizing High Consequence Areas Associated with Natural Gas Pipelines" (Stephens 2000). It must be recognized that this formula was derived solely on the premise that thermal radiation from a jet/trench fire is the dominant hazard related to pipe rupture and subsequent ignition. Since natural gas is non-toxic and significantly lighter than air, this premise is valid. However, there are certain pipeline operators transporting flammable gases other than natural gas (e.g. hydrogen) that will be governed by the jet fire hazard, and thus there is a need for the derivation of PIR formulae for use in identifying high consequence areas for these pipelines. While the C-FER report provides a basis for derivation of such formulae, the dimensionless values for emissivity factor, release rate decay factor, and efficiency factor used in the original derivation of the PIR formula have not been validated or optimized for flammable gases other than natural gas.
