Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008.
Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The logical scheduling of activities in an engineering project currently relies heavily on the experience and intuition of the persons responsible for the schedule. In large projects the complexity of the schedule far exceeds the capacity of human intuition, and systematic techniques are required to compute a consistent sequence of activities. In this study a simple model of the engineering process is described. Based on certain specified relationships between components of the model, a consistent sequence of activities is determined in the form of a logical step schedule. The problem of resource constraints receives special attention. Engineering projects are often executed with limited resources and determining the impact of such restrictions on the logical step schedule is important. This study investigates activityshifting strategies to find a near-optimal sequence of activities that guarantees consistent evolution of deliverables while resolving resource conflicts within the context of logical step schedules.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web contains a vast amount of information. This feature makes it a very useful part of our everyday activities but the information contained within is made up of an exponentially increasing repository of semantically unstructured data. The semantic web movement involves the evolution of the existing World Wide web in order to enable computers make meaning of and understand the data they process and consequently increase their processing capabilities. Over the past decade a number of new projects implementing the semantic web technology have been developed albeit still in their infancy. These projects are based on semantic data models and one such is the Wikidata project. The Wikidata project is targeted at providing a more semantic platform for editing and sharing data throughout the Wikipedia and Wikimedia communities. This project studies how the Wikidata project facilitates such a semantic platform for the Wikimedia communities and includes the development of an application utilizing the semantic capabilities of Wikidata. The objective of the project is to develop an application capable of retrieving and presenting statistical data and also be able to make missing or invalid data on Wikidata detectable. The result is an application currently aimed at researchers and students who require a convenient tool for statistical data collection and data mining projects. Usability and performance tests of the application are also conducted with the results presented in the report. Keywords: Semantic web, World Wide Web, Semantic data model, Wikidata, data mining.

Abstract:
All big and important decisions come through analysis. The main aim of the analysis is to examine or investigate more complicated problems by decomposing them into simpler ones whereas we come to certain conclusions on the basis of a detailed recognition of particularities. This diploma thesis is dedicated to analytic tasks solving techniques in Business Intelligence which would describe and support the whole process of analysis, its needs and premises in real surrounding environment. During the project I cooperated with Clever Decision company and took part in the real project. This company deals with Business Intelligence solutions/applications development and this project is meant to set the method of how to treat the development of the solutions. My work consists in designing a template of BI analysis method which is a part of a complex technique. The aim of this diploma thesis is to introduce my own method of Business Intelligence solution analysis, to introduce its basic components and common work instructions for this method. I reached my aim by analyzing documents and reports provided by Clever Decision company and other methods and suggestions. The main contribution of my diploma thesis is that the method works as a draft for assistance and standardizing the process of Business Intelligence solution analysis in Clever Decision company. This draft can nevertheless work as a basis for creating a wholly new method. My work consists of three parts. The first part, a theoretical one, deals with recapitulation of basic terms and methods I worked with. The second part represents properties, components and general working instructions for this method. It moreover presents main outputs, more precisely documents that are practical attachments to the method itself. The third part introduces the method itself including presentation of outputs/document drafts designed by me.

Abstract:
Different theories have been applied at the interface of entrepreneurship and family business research to explore the entrepreneurial behaviors of families. The STEP project, in particular, has related entrepreneurship and family business research to investigate and realize the determinants of successful transfers of entrepreneurial spirit across generations. Within this perspective, Transgenerational entrepreneurship refers to sustained family-based entrepreneurship that generates a systematic stream of family-influenced social and economic wealth across many generations. The aim of this research is to have a better comprehension of continuous entrepreneurship in family firms in Tunisia. We followed a mixed methodology : qualitative and quantitative through the data collection from family firms. The results of our work has led to important understandings about interactions of the family and family firm, new insights into survival and demise of firms.Accordingly, we go forward entrepreneurship theory and practice by assessing the fundamentals of business model construction within the family business context, thus expediting stronger theoretical perspectives of transgenerational entrepreneurship

Abstract:
Studies in recent years have revealed the challenges involved in deploying ERP solutions due to its complexity. Before attempting to implement ERP systems, it is essential to study various aspects such as project management, training, and change management in detail to manage the associated risks. When an ERP project is undertaken with insufficient planning, it may result in failure to integrate business processes and in substantial financial loss. Research has been pursued to identify critical risk/failure factors that may arise during implementation and the measures that should be taken to manage them. However, there is lack of research in identifying the management of critical risk/failure factor using a structured methodology. This raises a question of ‘can a structured methodology identify and manage critical risk/failure factors and support deploying ERP solutions with a better quality?’ A study of Microsoft Sure Step Methodology is performed to identify critical risk/failure factors that frequently occur during ERP implementation. These factors are derived from 8 articles. On determining critical risk/failure factors, we investigated if Sure Step methodology likely contains procedures that approach these factors.

Abstract:
In rural areas of least developed countries, the preparation of meals remains the predominant energy consuming activity. Cooking is mostly performed with firewood – using the ancient “technology” of the 3-stone fire. This practice results in numerous challenges that hinder the transformation envisioned by the Millennium Development Goals and it therefore contributes towards slowing the development of rural areas. Activities focussing on amending this status-quo can be termed insufficient in scope- and sustainability. The main deficiencies of most projects are that the prime focus of the mainstream of these endeavours has been on demand side management, mainly performed by disseminating cookstoves, and that there has been little innovation in respect to raising stove adoption rates. As the strict efficiency focus obviously only captures one side of the problem – merely focussing on treating symptoms rather than providing an effective solution, this thesis stresses the need for a paradigm shift towards more holistic interventions. This work very much focuses on the topic of stove adoption. This is a complex topic - very much linked to attaining behavioural change. Deliberations concluded that the identification of enabling factors for adoption, which can be termed a prerequisite for developing sustainable methods for stove projects, requires a mix of instruments. To suffice the required data demand the initial literature review was complemented by a thorough assessment of the kitchen environment and the cooking behaviour of stove owners. The fieldwork concentrated on 210 beneficiaries of an efficient cookstove project. The applied methods included interviews, observations and pictorial documentation. As a remedy to the challenges and current shortcomings identified during field work and literature review, the author herein develops a novel and more holistic implementation strategy for stove projects – the so- called 3-Step approach. This is based on the simultaneous implementation of availing cookstoves, building capacity in respect to kitchen management, as well as performing small-scale household level tree planting. The research, which further encompassed the piloting of the 3-Step approach, led to the overall conclusion that the proposed increase in project scope holds a multitude of opportunities for improving the livelihoods of the rural target groups. The main impact of this innovative strategy lies in a decrease of average transaction costs as well as in a considerable increase in project sustainability. As will be extensively elaborated, the former is achieved by a more effective utilisation of the extensive infrastructure of trained artisans. The latter refers to the expected income increase on household level, as well as to improvements in environmental- and human health. In combination these enable rural communities to better adapt to climate change.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1996.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 91-92).
Berlin-Marzahn, the largest peripheral city of Berlin, is the focus of th is thesis. Initiated in the 1970's it is an urban landscape of monolithic apartment blocks of precast concrete construction. This landscape lacks any ground definition and defies meaningful inhabitation by human beings. The present urban conditions facilitate unhealthy social cognitions. With the fall of the East Germany state new needs in educational, commercial, and social facilities have developed that must be addressed. In order to creatively infill the left-over spaces lying between the mass housing blocks, and improve the quality of life of the inhabitants, it is the task of urban planners and architects to retroactively devise urban strategies and develop architectural projects that address not only the physical conditions, but also the physchological conditions of this place beset with such difficult circumstances. This thesis sets out to address both the physical and psychological problems through the design of a campus. The physical structure of a campus and the mental and psychological aspects of education on establish community coherence and identity in the presently in coherent and dysfunctional urban environment. The premise of this thesis is that by laying out a campus within the existing undefined city the functions and the sense of community found in a small town will be created within the urbanity of the masses of people who are already in Marzahn.

Abstract:

Women are underrepresented in the STEM workforce. Trends are starting to change as more and more women are starting to choose majors that are related to STEM. However, the numbers decline sharply in engineering, physical sciences and computer sciences. This project was created as a resource to be used in schools to encourage the increase of women studying, and eventually working, in STEM fields. Research has shown that many women who choose STEM majors and careers were heavily influenced by informal STEM enrichment opportunities outside of the school day and female role models in STEM. This project is an NGSS aligned lesson that incorporates a historical vignette highlighting the work of a female scientist. The vignette can be used in a lesson or as a pull out in a different class or program.

Abstract:
In this thesis the application of machine learning algorithms as a tool in the search for top squark is studied. Two neural network models are trained with simulated stop events as signal against dileptonic and semi-leptonic top pair production events as background. There is a substantial class imbalance between the number of signal and background samples that are used. The performance of the neural network models are compared to the performance of a cut and count method. None of the models outperform the standard cut and count method.

Abstract:

This research evaluates the effectiveness of Project ReCharge, an energy efficiency, STEM curriculum designed for middle and high school students. The project includes a five-unit curriculum, and monthly professional development spanning a year. The project was implemented in ten schools over three years. Four areas were explored in the study including (1) changes to student content knowledge, (2) changes to student attitudes towards STEM subjects and careers, (3) changes to teacher self-efficacy and beliefs, and (4) changes to teacher content knowledge. A content test for teachers and students, the STEM Semantics Survey, and STEBI-A were used to collect data on 4123 students and 47 teachers. Data were collected in a quasi-experimental design utilizing parametric and nonparametric techniques. Analyses suggest student content knowledge increased significantly from pretest to posttest for all years (Pretest: M = 11.38, SD = 4.97, Posttest: M = 16.67, SD = 5.83, t = 45.05, p < 0.001, d = 0.98). Increases to student attitudes in STEM varied by year and grade, but overall increases were found in science (N = 2362, z = –2.618, p = 0.030, η 2 = 0.002), and math attitudes (N = 2348, z = –2.280, p = 0.023, η2 = 0.002). High school students tended to show more increased attitudes in more subject areas than middle school students. No changes to teacher self-efficacy and beliefs were found, and increases to teacher content knowledge only occurred in the third year (N = 22, x2 = 5.158; p = 0.076, η2 = 0.319).

Abstract:
This thesis conducts a multi-level policy transfer analysis of a governmental response to the problem of pseudoephedrine diversion. Pseudoephedrine is an active ingredient in over-the counter cold and flu medication available from pharmacists and also acts as a precursor chemical in the illicit production of Amphetamine-Type-Stimulants (ATS). ATS are synthetically produced psychotropic drugs that are subject to international and national controls on their production, supply and use. Throughout the late 1990s and mid 2000s there was a large increase in the rates of use and production of ATS in Australia. Between the years of 2001-2005, clandestine production of ATS was particularly pronounced in Queensland where the laboratory detections outnumbered all other states in Australia combined. Over 90% of clandestine laboratories detected in Australia relied upon the diversion of pseudoephedrine from legitimate pharmaceutical products. In 2006, in response to the increased diversion of pseudoephedrine from pharmacies into the illicit drug manufacturing market and as a means for pharmacists to fulfil their record-keeping regulatory obligations, the Pharmacy Guild of Australia developed Project STOP. Project STOP is a tool that assists pharmacists in making an informed decision regarding the supply of products that contain pseudoephedrine. It is supported by a legislative framework that requires a driver’s licence number to be entered into an electronic database for the purchasing history of the customer to be reviewed before a decision regarding supply is made. Following its initial implementation in Queensland, Project STOP was subsequently transferred to all other jurisdictions in Australia as part of a national rollout. This thesis conducts an analysis of the transfer of Project STOP as a governmental response to the problem of pseudoephedrine diversion. It presents three levels of analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of the conditions of possibility for the development of Project STOP; an assessment of how it came to be identified as the national solution to the problem of pseudoephedrine; and, how Project STOP works in the applied domain following its transfer. It concludes by outlining the broader implications of this study for policy transfer.

Abstract:
Falls are a major public health concern and contribute significantly to mortality and morbidity in the older adult population. Each year, approximately 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for fall-related injuries and at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures. The purpose of this project was to improve the participants' knowledge and highlight interventions to reduce the incidence of falls and injuries as a result of falls. The project was developed using the Stop Accidents, Deaths and Injuries (STEADI) toolkit, the Iowa model of evidence-based practice to promote quality of care, and the Lewin's change theory. The practice-focused question related to whether fall prevention would improve following the implementation of a staff education project using the STEADI toolkit. Twenty-six nurses were assessed to determine their knowledge deficits. Pretest and posttest data were analyzed, and as a result of the staff education initiative, the nurses' knowledge increased by 99.25%. Prior to the session, the facility had not participated in a fall-prevention initiative. This project offered a practical solution to the educational gaps identified at the practice setting. Adopting the STEADI toolkit at the practice setting is expected to improve patient safety, reduce falls with injuries and prevent fall-related deaths.

Abstract:
The multiple case study investigated levels and types of transfer observed in a K-8 STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) academy in a project-based learning (PBL) environment. The academy was constructed two years prior to the study and conducive to PBL instruction. The students and teachers were in the second year of using PBL in the subject of science at the time of the study. The grade levels observed were second, fourth, and sixth grade and each grade level had three PBL units examined from the beginning to the end of the unit. The nine case studies, from the three different grade levels, were observed to identify Haskell's levels and types of transfer as determined by project requirements, observation of students, completed projects, and student interviews. The findings from this study showed that while projects moved the students beyond knowledge acquisition to application of knowledge in completed projects such as books, films, dances, etc., higher levels of transfer and more types of transfer were not evident. Therefore, based on the results of this study, the evidence of lower levels of transfer suggests that the PBL units, though inventive and potentially valuable to student learning, were not designed for higher levels of transfer.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Katherine McNeill
Gaining popular recognition in the U.S. with the advent of the first White House Maker Faire in 2014, makerspaces have become an increasingly popular feature of the K-12 educational landscape. While makerspaces have been subject to critique related to the lack of inclusivity within the broader predominantly white and male ‘maker culture’, they have also been recognized for their potential to include and attract students that have been historically underrepresented in the STEM fields, specifically female, African-American and Latinx students (Halverson & Sheridan, 2014; Kafai et al., 2014; Vossoughi, et al., 2016). However, despite their popularity and the growing body of empirical evidence documenting their use in the K-12 context, there are many topics that warrant further exploration, from teachers’ experiences with making, to the processes involved in their long term success or failure, and issues related to leadership, professional development and teacher expertise (Haron & Hughes, 2018). Responding to the need for greater understanding of these issues, this exploratory case study examines the organizational and curricular role of an established middle school makerspace through observations, student surveys, and individual interviews with teachers and school leaders. Findings of this study revealed themes related to (a) discrepancies between participants’ aspirational ideals and the practical reality of their experiences; (b) the important role of flexibility and rigidity within the curriculum and school structures; and (c) the mutually influential relationships that exist between materials, identity, expertise and participation. Each of these themes held specific consequences for equity and inclusion. The findings of this study highlight the critical importance of attending to equity in the implementation of maker learning environments and the central role that school structures, materials and perceptions play in addressing historical inequities in making and STEAM. This study concludes with recommendations for researchers, teachers and school leaders that place equity at the center of plans for school-based making and directions for future research

Abstract:
Although there are currently various programs aimed at increasing the interest of high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), very few programs have explored the students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of extracurricular STEM programs to their school learning and post-school aspirations. This research aimed to investigate high school students’ perceptions of a STEM research placement program integrated into their school curriculum, and how it contributed to their self-efficacy, attitude towards science and motivation to pursue a career in that field. A standard operating procedure (SOP) was then developed to inform future STEM-centred high school programs.

Abstract:
The thesis is a follow up of the “I SEE project” (Inclusive STEM Education to Enhance the capacity to aspire and imagine future careers), a triennial ERASMUS+ project, started in 2016 and ended in September 2019, coordinated by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Bologna (https://iseeproject.eu/). The main aim of the project is to design of teaching modules on advanced interdisciplinary STEM topics, such as climate change, quantum computers or artificial intelligence, for secondary school students. The approach developed toward these STEM topics reflects the need of updating Science Education and preparing students to address the socio-scientific challenges that the world compels us to face. The work of this thesis concerns the design and the development of an activity on classical and quantum random walk that aims to: i. carry out the intrinsic interdisciplinarity of the topic, ii. highlight the differences between the logic at the basis of the classical and quantum computers. It is designed in the light of a follow-up of the I SEE project, the IDENTITIES project (https://identitiesproject.eu/). IDENTITIES (Integrate Disciplines to Elaborate Novel Teaching approaches to InTerdisciplinarity and Innovate pre-service teacher Education for STEM challenges) is an ERASMUS+ project, started in September 2019 and coordinated by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Bologna. This project, more focused on interdisciplinary themes, provides a lens to explore the random walk as a context in which we can investigate, on one hand, the peculiarities of the disciplines involved and, on the other, their intertwining. A future-oriented part, my main contribution to the activity, is carried out in order to foster students to explore the wide range of application and implication that random walk hides and to show them the variety of STEM carriers that can be involved.

Abstract:
Quantity Surveyors are considered as the most qualified cost specialists in the construction industry, with their experiences and skills in cost management and control as well as contract management. However, this role is not well recognized in Sweden compared to other countries such as the UK where it’s originated from. And so, the construction industry in Sweden uses other professions for the roles that were supposed to be done by quantity surveyors or cost managers. As a result, the quantity surveyors that have penetrated the Swedish construction industry, face challenges to perform their duties specifically in this case, cost control due to several circumstances. This study has looked into different contractual challenges that face quantity surveyors while performing cost control in building projects. Also, recommendations have been made to help mitigate these challenges and improve cost control in projects. In this master thesis, qualitative study has been performed where quantity surveyors were interviewed regarding cost control and the contractual challenges, they face in building construction projects. The findings were analysed with a theoretical framework and discussed together with previous research and knowledge and in this study principal – agent theory was used. The results of the study showed that poor planning, late involvement of the quantity surveyors in projects, lack of effective communication and poor contract management are the main challenges that face quantity surveyor in performing cost control in building projects. To overcome these challenges, the author suggests that there is a need of increasing awareness on the importance of having quantity surveyors and clearly establish their roles in projects, have proper communication plan, proper contract management and improve skills on quantity surveying software.

Abstract:
Headworks design in steep, sediment loaded rivers is challenging. Technical challenges related to the functionalities of the headworks area have been studied for the case of Lower Manang Marsyangdi (LMM) Hydropower Project (HPP), which is under design phase in Nepal. The Physical Hydraulic Model (PHM) study conducted at Hydro Lab focuses on intake hydraulics, sediment handling and trash removal along the intake. Experience from the physical model study of the LMM headworks has shown that the passage of sediments and bed control during flood periods are the major challenges in this hydropower project. Design of an optimal bed load handling component and the settling basin are very important to handle sediments without affecting the regularity in power generation.Velocity measurements were conducted at several cross-sections along the settling basins to evaluate the hydraulics. Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) was calculated from the velocity measurements to assess the effect of secondary currents. The study has further focused on the concept of numerical modeling to replicate the hydraulics in the existing headworks model of LMM HPP. A Three-dimensional (3D) CFD-program, STAR CCM+, has been used to conduct the numerical model study of the intake hydraulics of LMM headworks. Through dye tests and measurements on the PHM it has been shown that final conceptual design, which is based on modifications conducted on the initial design, has an improved hydraulics along the intake. Vortices/eddies in front of the intakes and along the settling basins have been reduced and a uniform, symmetrical flow with the desired velocity of less than 1.00 m/s prototype value has been achieved along the settling basins. Further evaluation of TKE has shown significant decrease of turbulence level along the settling basins. Use of numerical model has to a large extent been successfully able to replicate the hydraulics in the modeled headworks of LMM HPP. The velocity range is comparable to the measured values in the laboratory. However, secondary currents and, thereby, the TKE values have not been reproduced properly in the numerical model. TKE for the first cross-section close to the inlet of the basin is similar but no significant trend can be observed between the other cross-sections. Numerical model requires boundary conditions determined from the PHM and results need to be validated against laboratory measurements to ensure their accuracy. Thus, it is recommended for numerical model studies to be used in combinations with PHM study. Numerical model requires an initial validation by comparing simulated flows to measured flows from the laboratory. The validated numerical model can then be used to predict further effects of modification in the headworks design and to optimize the conceptual design.

Abstract:
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a booming teaching method in Catalonia. It is a student- centered pedagogy that actively engage students to solve real-world problems. Despite its wide application, there is a lack of agreement on what PBL is. The thesis proposes 7 key elements that should be incorporated in the design of a PBL. To do so, this work analysis teachers’ understanding of the method, the elements which they consider essential and its application. Additionally, the outlook of the students on PBL has been explored. As a result of both contributions and, concluding that creativity is the least active element in PBL, a new method has been designed and implemented. This program includes bespoke activities to promote student scientific creativity. Consequently, this Thesis provides teachers tools to elaborate high quality projects, where creativity is highly promoted.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to reveal the potentials of &ldquo
Web&rdquo
as a system of achitectural organization. This concept developed by Georges Candilis, Alexis Josic, and Shadrach Woods can be seen as a product of the discourse arose in 1960s, which concieves the city as a continuous and dynamic structure rather than a static entity composed of individual buildings. In this sense, Web appears as a system of architectural organization that responds to this dynamism by enabling growth and change. In this thesis, Frankfurt-Rö
merberg Competition Project by Candilis-Josic-Woods (CJW) is analyzed to understand the potential of Web in organizing both physical and social relations. Revealing the potentials of Web requires examination of other concepts introduced by Candilis-Josic-Woods. Therefore, the relationship between Web and its sources (casbah and bidonville) and precedents (habitat é
volutif and Stem) will be constructed. In order to construct this relation and to understand how Web operates as a system of architectural organization, the components and design acts of Web as well as its potentials will be analyzed in the case of Frankfurt-Rö
merberg Project. In doing so, the project will be seen as the main prototype of Web. The thesis will also put emphasis on habitat é
volutif as the main idea behind Web. It will be argued that habitat é
volutif evolved into Web with the help of stem as a connecting element.

Abstract:
High quality infant and toddler (IT) child care has repeatedly been linked to better outcomes for children. However, in the U.S., IT child care has also been plagued by poor quality. Using a mixed-methods design, the purpose of this study was to provide an indepth explanation of quality change in IT classrooms and the myriad of factors that contribute to higher quality. Framed in an ecological model that views quality as the product and interaction of process, structural, and caregiver characteristics, this study addressed the impact of a variety of variables on quality change. The sample was comprised of 86 classrooms nested within 48 centers that participated in Baby Steps, a quality improvement project administered by the Utah Office of Child Care. Quantitative data included ITERS-R scores, wages, turnover, capacity, geographic location, and parent fees collected between 2003 and 2010 as part of the Baby Steps Project. Seven center directors completed semi-structured interviews that provided an insider perspective on their perceptions of the barriers and contributors to improved quality. A mixed model analysis was used to examine quality change over time. Results indicate that classroom quality scores (as measured by the ITERS-R) did increase by the second year of participation in Baby Steps; however, subsequent years of participation did not lead to significantly higher scores. Specialized training also appears to contribute to higher quality but high turnover was associated with lower quality programs. Non-urban programs appeared to be especially receptive to the intervention. Center directors echoed these findings and spoke to the

Abstract:
E-government initiatives have large potentials in developing better services for citizens and a potential to transform government structures. However e-government initiatives face a number of challenges of complexity and risk - it is not an easy matter to realize its potentials. A key research issue for the e-government field, as well as the information systems field in general, is to understand why some projects progress to success while others end in failure. The main objective in this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the progress and the success vs. failure in e-government development based on case studies of two inter-organizational e-service projects. The analysis in the paper is made from a) an e-government systems development life cycle perspective and b) a challenge and success factors perspective. The main result in this paper is that crucial success factors of an inter-organizational e-government project include project manager skills and position in the agency organization as well as when and how systems maintenance issues are introduced in the project. Criticism is presented concerning the life cycle model used in the analysis regarding this last matter.

Abstract:
Elementary school is a transition time for student interests and motivation and there is a need for teachers to provide opportunities to facilitate continued interest. One area of concern is in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. One pedagogical approach that may help with facilitating interest is problem-based learning (PBL; Barrows, 1996). The purpose of this study was to assess changes in students’ reported levels of individual interest in mathematics across time and to assess differences in individual interest based on amount of PBL exposure. Participants included students (n = 45) involved with Project GEMS (Gifted Education in Mathematics and Science; Roberts, 2008), which was a federally funded grant through the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program. Interest in mathematics was measured at the beginning of the first fall semester students entered the program and at the end of each subsequent spring semester with a 17-item interest measure consisting of four sub scores: emotion, value, knowledge, and engagement. Results indicate a negative linear trend for composite and sub factors of interest across time except value. The PBL intervention did not moderate the change in interest across time. Conclusions, possible limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Abstract:
Controlling the availability of illicit drugs and their use is an exemplar of a wicked problem. Reducing the scale of the illicit drugs market through suppressing supply has proven extremely difficult. A recent systematic review of studies by Cunningham and colleagues who have produced a series of research papers examining the impact of precursor regulations on various methamphetamine outcomes in North America, argue this research represents the most compelling evidence to date that ‘precursor regulations, or indeed any supply control strategy, can have significant impacts on the retail market for illicit drugs’. The review of this work concludes that the question for future research is ‘not so much whether precursor regulations work, but which regulations work best and in what context’; this is the starting point for my research. The market for methamphetamine is entrenched, broad and dynamic and represents an important criminological and public health problem in Australia. Within Australia the production of methamphetamine has been concentrated in Queensland and that state government has responded by developing a coercive regulatory framework which co-opts pharmacies into a partnership with drug law enforcement that is aimed at preventing the diversion of licit precursor chemicals to the illicit market for manufacture into methamphetamine. In 2005, the Queensland Pharmacy Guild in partnership with the Queensland Police Service developed an electronic medication recording system Project STOP, - which is a real-time web based database used by police to track and apprehend ‘pseudo runners’ - to facilitate adherence to the compulsory requirements of recording and reporting sales of pseudoephedrine placed upon them by both health regulations and the criminal law. In my thesis, I refer to the family of innovations (legislative, policy and technological interventions) underpinning the police–pharmacy partnership as Third Party Policing (TPP).

Abstract:

[EN] This dissertation explores a series of all-women self-organised initiatives that have emerged at the intersection of art and technology internationally. These grassroot initiatives have continued to appear in places where there is a new media arts scene, generally male-dominated and low in diversity. This research work is a mapping of this techno-social and artistic phenomenon, attempting to identify its earliest practices. Through interviews, surveys and ethnographic research, this thesis seeks to comprehend the context that has given rise to such initiatives over three decades and half, examining the different typologies by formats, extension, space and structure that they have adopted to address the situation of women in these fields. There is a void of references on all-women curatorial and organisational forms in art and technology. Moreover, general literature points at digital subcultures of the 1990s such as cyberfeminism and DIY movement as first referents for women's alliance and translocal activism in the digital age. However, collaboration and segregation strategies in new media arts have not been discussed in feminist scholarship from a deeper historical perspective. Therefore, this dissertation elaborates the linkage of such initiatives to early history of all-women art groups and alternative art spaces, history of women in new media arts and to network cultures. New information and communication technologies have enabled new forms of communication and connectivity cross-borders; however, this work investigates in which measure these initiatives are dependent upon ICT for the establishment of a community, compared to analog formats. With the results, this dissertation aims to become a source of references that enriches the scarce bibliography on the topic, providing a list of curatorial and organisational forms with the earliest and unpublished practices that altogether contribute to current women's historiography. Lastly, while discussing the current situation of women in art and technology fields, this works presents Atenea, a mentoring and networking platform for women in Arts and STEM careers. Atenea is comprised of a programme having different organizational, curatorial and networking activities. Additionally, the platform has a project focused on teaching STEM skills to girls through new media arts with female artists as mentors. Hands-on project-based learning interventions in the STEM classroom are ubiquitous but tend to focus on robotics or competition based curriculums. These curricula do not address musical creativity or cultural relevancy to reach under-represented or disinterested groups. By utilizing an analog synthesizer for STEM learning standards this research aims to engage students that may otherwise lack confidence in the field. By incorporating the Maker Movement, a STEAM architecture, and culturally relevant musical examples, this study’s goal to build both self-efficacy and literacy in STEM within under-represented groups through hands-on exercises with a Moog analog synthesizer, specifically the Moog Werkstatt. A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test/post-test design was crafted to determine study validity, and has been implemented in three separate studies. Several age demographics were selected across a variety of classroom models and teaching style. The purpose of this wide net was to explore where a tool like the Werkstatt and its accompanying curriculum would have the biggest impact. Results show that this curriculum and technique are largely ineffective in an inverted Music elective classroom. However, in the STEM classroom, literacy and confidence were built across genders, with females showing greater increases in engineering confidence and music technology interest than their male counterparts.

Abstract:
Palavras-chave: Educação,Formação Profissional, “e-learning” e Reinserção social ; Vocational training as a contribution to the Social Reintegration of Prisoners. The specific case of training of trainers within the European Project E-Step Abstract Aiming at the social reintegration of prisoners, a training system has been developed to provide them a professional qualification. The system is coordinated by the General Directorate of Prison Services and is implemented by public and private entities. In this framework, the present study examines the contributions of training for social reintegration of prisoners in Portugal, testing a training strategy, targeted at trainers of prisoners and technicians responsible for the framing of such training. The strategy was designed in order the prisoners receive training enabling them to increase their skills and thereby facilitate their reintegration into society after their release from prison. The European Project E-Step, under which the present study was undertaken, had especially in view the issue of security of prisons, as part of training dedicated to the use of ICT, including use of internet and e- learning. Keywords: Education, Training, e-learning and social reintegration of prisoners

Abstract:
Class of 2011 Abstract
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of patient and hospital characteristics as well as selected comorbidities on inpatient mortality and charges in pediatric HSCT. We have determined the top 25 comorbidities reported during all inpatient stays for HSCT as well as for those stays ending in mortality. METHODS: All data was extracted from the AHRQ KID databases for the years 1997, 2000, 2003, and 2006. Two regression analyses were performed to determine the contribution of various independent variables on mortality and charges. Subjects of this study included all cases of HSCT reported in the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) KID as ICD-9 41.XX. RESULTS: Factors accounting for larger increases in cost included death during hospital stay, the development of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), pneumonia, and length of stay (LOS). The largest decreases in charges were seen for patients coming from a small or “micropolitan” location, patients cared for in teaching hospitals, and in hospitals with large bedsizes. Variables associated with increased risk of mortality on linear regression included development of DIC, sepsis, or pneumonia. CONCLUSION: Further study relating to HSCT is necessary to determine the contribution of specific comorbidities to mortality and charges. Importantly, DIC is associated with both greater risk of mortality and greater charges. It would be prudent to recommend increased monitoring and early treatment for DIC based on these results.
