Abstract:
This article presents work done by International Organization for Standardization in providing useful information. The International Organization for Standardization has released a new standard for the exchange of product-model data, ISO 10303-242, which is a new application protocol standard in the STEP family of standards. The standard significantly improves STEP’s capabilities, especially in providing useful information for an enterprise. STEP is commonly used in industry to share 3-D CAD model geometry with organizations using different CAD software with different proprietary data formats. The semantic information of the new standard is computer-interpretable; it can be used in semi-automated and automated systems and is intended to be used by software designed for tolerance analysis, inspection, and manufacturing. The CAx Implementor Forum is an essential part of STEP development. The CAx-IF works in parallel with the AP242 team to develop recommended practices for the implementation of AP242 in CAD and data translation software, to test the data models and best practices, and to provide critical feedback to the AP242 team.

"123 Polyclonal antibody preparations from avian origin did not reduce plasmatic haptoglobin concentrations but increased ruminal NH3-N in beef steers during transition from forage to high-grain diets." Journal of Animal Science 98, Supplement_2 (November 1, 2020): 54. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/jas/skz397.123.

Abstract:
Abstract This study investigated the effects of feeding an avian-derived polyclonal antibody preparation (PAP; CAMAS, Inc.) against Streptococcus bovis, Fusobacterium necrophorum, and lipopolysaccharides (40, 35, and 25% of the preparation, respectively) on plasmatic haptoglobin, ruminal short chain fatty acids (SCFA), and ammonia-N (NH3-N) concentrations of beef steers during a 21-d step-up adaptation to a high-grain diet. Eight ruminally cannulated Angus crossbred beef steers (658 ± 79 kg BW) were randomly assigned to treatments in a crossover design to be transitioned from a diet containing bermudagrass hay [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] plus 0.45 kg/d of molasses with 0 (CON) or 3 g/d of PAP (PAP) to a high-grain diet. Transition consisted of three 7-d steps of increased inclusion of cracked corn (35, 60, and 80% diet DM for STEP1, STEP2, and STEP3, respectively). On each transition d and 7 d after STEP3 (STEP3-7d), ruminal fluid samples were obtained every 3 h for 24 h. Blood samples were collected on d 0, 1, and 3 relative to each transition for haptoglobin determinations. Haptoglobin plasmatic concentrations increased (P = 0.03) on d 2 and 3 vs. d 1 during STEP2 and on STEP3 compared to STEP1 and STEP2 (P = 0.01). Steers receiving PAP had greater (P < 0.01) ruminal NH3-N concentration in STEP1; however, there were no effects of treatment on SCFA (P > 0.10). Total SCFA concentrations were affected by the step-up diets (P < 0.01); propionate concentration (Pro) was greater in STEP2 through STEP3-7d vs. STEP1 (P < 0.01), whereas acetate concentration (Ac) and Ac:Pro linearly decreased from STEP1 to STEP3-7d (P < 0.01). Feeding 3 g/d of polyclonal antibody preparations against Streptococcus bovis, Fusobacterium necrophorum, and lipopolysaccharides in a 21-d step-up adaptation to high-grain diets did not affect plasmatic haptoglobin or ruminal SCFA concentrations; however, it increased ruminal NH3-3 concentrations.

Abstract:
The article in question introduces research conducted by the Learning Development Team at the University of Leeds on the academic literacy skills development needs and expectations of taught postgraduate students, and the subsequent creation of an innovative new online resource, Step Up to Masters. As well as focusing on key topics highlighted by the research, the resource encourages students to reflect on their individual development priorities and to select the most relevant support options for their successful transition to taught postgraduate (PGT) study. The rationale behind this reflect and select approach has been informed by a synthesis of (a) the outcomes of key studies on the diverse needs and challenges faced by PGT students when making the transition to Masters study, and (b) the team’s own research findings on PGT students’ academic development priorities and preferences. Step Up to Masters received the Digital Award for Information Literacy 2020, and was central to the online PGT induction programme initiated at Leeds for 2020/21 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Abstract:
Background Studies have shown that lower-extremity problems in the homeless population have significant public health and economic implications. A combined community service and research project was performed to identify and address the foot and ankle care needs in a sample homeless population in San Francisco, California. Methods A 37-question survey regarding general demographic characteristics, foot hygiene practices, associated risk factors, and self-reported lower-extremity pathologic conditions was completed by 299 homeless individuals who met the inclusion criteria. The service project included education on proper foot care and the distribution of footwear. Results The participants demonstrated mostly good efforts regarding foot hygiene but had high-risk factors, including smoking, alcohol use, and extended hours on their feet. More than half of the homeless individuals surveyed experienced foot pain. Approximately one in five had edema and neuropathic symptoms. The most commonly reported foot problems were dermatologic, but these conditions could pose serious sequelae in the setting of risk factors. The community service project was well received by the homeless community. Conclusions This study demonstrates lack of resources and high-risk factors for lower-extremity complications in the homeless individuals studied. It is important in the realm of public health to keep lower-extremity health in mind because it plays an important role in preventing the spread of infection and lowering the social economic burden.
