Abstract:
In this study we investigated the stemming mechanisms of Google. We used its web interface and submitted many queries via a program. Stemming is the process of correlating morphologically similar words with one another. Search engines use stemming to match documents having one form of a word with queries having another form of the same word. We investigated the stemming mechanism of Google for three classes of words: singulars/plurals, combined words, and verbs with many postfixes. Our results indicate that Google uses a document-based algorithm for stemming. It evaluates each document separately and makes a decision to index or not for the conflated forms of the words it has. It indexes documents only for word forms that are semantically strongly correlated. While it indexes documents for singulars and plurals frequently, it rarely indexes documents for word forms with the postfixes of -able or -tively.

Abstract:
This article discusses measures being taken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to protect New Orleans from future flood events. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is redesigning and upgrading the 350-mile network of linked levees, floodwalls, gates, and pumps in the New Orleans area. The Corps of Engineers’ plan for New Orleans flood control involves upgrading some existing structures such as levees and floodwalls and adding some new risk-reduction features, two of which are movable gates. The proposed Bayou Bienvenue Gate will sit near the junction of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet to keep floodwater away from the southern end of the Industrial Canal. The Seabrook Gate will span the northern end of the Industrial Canal where it meets Lake Pontchartrain. By preventing storm surges from entering the Industrial Canal, these gates will protect a densely populated residential and commercial area. However, the presence of the new gates will change day-to-day current patterns in ways that could impact existing structures and use.

Abstract:
Words  stemming  is  one  of  the  important  issues  in  the field  of  natural  language processing  and  information retrieval.  There  are  different  methods  for stemming which are mostly language-dependent. Therefore, these  stemmers are only applicable  to  particular  languages.  Because  of the importance  of  this issue,  in  this paper, the proposed method for stemming is aimed to be language-independent. In the  proposed  stemmer,  a  bilingual  dictionary  is  used and  all  of  the  words  in  the dictionary are firstly clustered. The words’ clustering is based on their structural and semantic similarity. Finally, finding the stem of new coming words is performed by making use of the previously formatted clusters. To evaluate the proposed scheme, words  stemming is  done on both  Persian  and  English  languages.  The encouraging results  indicate  the  good  performance  of  the proposed  method  compared  with  its counterparts.
