Abstract:
The steering gear device includes two parts, a steering gear control circuit and a transmission component. The transmission component includes a ball screw and a motor. During the operation of the steering gear, due to the presence of the steering gear ball screw motor and friction, a certain amount of heat will be generated, which will affect the steering gear control circuit in a confined space. At the same time, the steering gear is inevitable in the actual working process, and will experience a high temperature environment, which will increase the temperature of the internal structure of the steering gear, and due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients between various materials, stress and strain will occur in the structure, which may cause mismatch or even cracks in the system structure, and the steering gear system cannot work normally. It is necessary to analyze the thermal characteristics of the overall steering gear under multiple factors. Based on this, this paper uses COMSOL three-dimensional simulation software to conduct thermal simulation analysis on the shell of the steering gear containing the control circuit board. The temperature distribution and stress-strain response law of the control circuit board in the box, and the influence of different materials and thickness of the box heat insulation layer on the thermal characteristics of the control circuit are discussed, and then a reasonable thickness and material of the heat insulation layer are obtained for the design of the rudder chassis for reference.

Compared to the rack and pinion steering gear with constant ratio, the variable ratio rack and pinion of rack and pinion steering gear with variable ratio will cause changes in the force environment of the steering. It is necessary to analyze its structure and find the structural optimization method of the rack and pinion steering gear with variable ratio. The overall model of rack and pinion steering gear with variable ratio was established by using CATIA, and the stress-strain and the deformation analysis of the overall structure was carried out by using ANSYS Workbench. The analysis results provide an important reference basis for the structural optimization method of rack and pinion steering gear with variable ratio.

Abstract:
The study on power steering gear is less than other auto parts at home or abroad. Compared with developed countries, the independent design and manufacture of power steering starts late, and lacks practical and effective evaluation standards. The combination of the theoretical analysis, numerical calculation and experimental verification is the key technology to optimize the design or test to evaluate the power steering gear’s function and performance. In this paper, the power steering gear’s finite element analysis(FEA) model was built to analyse the fatigue stress and fatigue life of the power steering gear’s components, such as housing, input shaft and output shaft. and the fatigue test of the power steering gear was also designed and implemented. Research showed that, the power steering gear fatigue properties of FEA and reliability test have the same results. The total damage of 4 A-B-C event cycles is less than 1, the steering gear system is judged safe after 4 event cycles per design requirements. Each component of the power steering gear has different maximum average stress. The stress of the sector shaft, the piston and the screws is very close to the yield stress, which is much larger than the other components, and needed to be treated with caution The maximum stresses of the gear housing are a little over the yield strengths at the stress of 6,118 lbs, which is more dangerous than the other components, and great attention should be paid to it.

Abstract:
The rudder and steering gear is the most widely used ship maneuvering equipment. It consists of the maneuvering device, transmission mechanism, steering gear, steering mechanism and the rudder blade. MV "TANSUO HAO" is a scientific research ship of 30 years old. The scientific exploration missions require a very high accuracy of the ship’s course, so the ship has to constantly adjust her course and steer frequently. On that day, the duty officer found the steering gear failure to turn left in the rough sea condition. The engineering crew members had to make an emergency repair. It took plenty of time to locate the trouble of the steering gear in the repair process, because the valve plate deformation problem on the solenoid reversing valve was very hard to find out. By exploring the obscure steering gear failure reason and special troubleshooting process on MV "TANSUO HAO", this thesis provides some repair experience for the hydraulic system management and proposes flexible and patient failure analysis as well as some preventive maintenance measures against the problem.

Abstract:
Many studies of mechanisms contributing to steering wheel nibble have been carried out in the past. This paper deals with some aspects that have not yet been studied, or those that have been presented by several authors but are deemed to be controversial. Firstly, an overview of stimulation sources (disturbance factors), and the significance these have with respect to steering nibble, is given. As an example of the controversial aspects of the problem, this paper deals with the assumption of dry friction in steering gear models and its conflict with the observed transfer of vibration caused by small (realistic) amounts of imbalance or tyre force variation. After modelling the steering gear resistance correctly, it is possible to identify, in the steering gear, a natural frequency that contributes reasonably to the nibble phenomenon. Based on this new model, a CAE study on parameter sensitivity, using the ‘design of experiments’ approach, is presented.

Abstract:
he article deals with steering gears, used on marine and river ships, namely with ram-type steering gears. Article topicality due to the fact that ship controllability and sailing safety depends of steering gears reliability. Reliability could be increased through the refinement of processes, which took place during the perception and transfer of load. Process of lateral force perception by plungers and guide beams is studied theoretically. It is shown that perception depends of gap size between plunger and sleeve and could pass in one, two or three stages. Those stages are characterized changing in the loading process plungers fixing conditions, and respectively plunger lateral load proposed to determinate by three design schemes. Received expressions for calculation ultimate gaps of «plunger-sleeve» pare landing, that gives the limits of application each of three design schemes. Ratios for determination load of plunger and guide beam are received trough consideration their joint deformation for each design schemes. On the example of YOOWON-MITSUBISHI YDFT-335-2 ram-type steering gear is shown that in new gear, where landing gap is minimal and conditioned by tolerances of plunger and sleeve diameters, guide beam can take only 2.0…6.5% of lateral force, which applied to it and plunger from tiller. In steering gear with partially worn out plunger and sleeve in time of rudder feather shifting from diametric plane to board (when α = 5…35º), guide beam could take 4.7…6.8% of lateral force. The source of origin significant loads on plungers in ram-type steering gears is application of sinus-type mechanism for transformation progressive plunger motion to rotating tiller motion. Decreasing lateral loads on plunger through using unloading guide beams, with considering low unloading percent is ineffective. Guide beams availability complicates steering gear construction, increasing number of friction surfaces and trough this complicates steering gear maintenance.

Ultra-compact electric vehicles has excellent environmental performance and are extremely convenient for short-distance travel. However, owing to cabin space limitations, it is difficult to mount power steering. Therefore, there is a need to increase the gear ratio of the rack and pinion to change steering angle because such vehicles need light torque to steer. However, increasing the gear ratio requires more rotations of the steering wheel. Our research group focused on developing a steer-by-wire system (SBWS) that freely controls the steering torque. Although we evaluated the burden when a driver rotates the steering wheel in one direction in a previous study. This study assumed the actual steering operation in an SBWS. Abstract Central Pattern Generator (CPG) has the characteristics of strong adaptability and various output forms, which is suitable for amphibious robotic fish whose environment may change at any time. According to the bionic prototype, the Hopf oscillators on ipsilateral and contralateral side were coupled to form a CPG network topology model, which was used to control the steering gear and realize the waveform propulsion of the fins. In MATLAB, parameters such as amplitude and frequency were set for the model to obtain the motion characteristics under five actual gaits. The output curve is consistent with the theory and the conversion flow field is smooth, which proves the correctness of the CPG model and can be used as the target of subsequent simulation. Finally, through ADAMS and MATLAB co-simulation, the output swing angle curve of the controlled object (steering gear) is obtained, which accords with the abovementioned control goal. This guaranteed the effectiveness of CPG model control. Moreover, the centroid and torque of the steering gear changes in the gait process of crawling and steering are especially analyzed, these changes indicate that the steering gear does not lose too much power during the rigid contact between the fin and the ground and prove the practical feasibility of the theory.

Abstract:
Due to the complicated design process of gear train, optimization is a significant approach to improve design efficiency. However, the design of gear train is a complex multiobjective optimization with mixed continuous-discrete variables under numerous nonlinear constraints, and conventional optimization algorithms are not suitable to deal with such optimization problems. In this paper, based on the established dynamic model of steering mechanism for rotary steering system, the key component of which is a planetary gear set with teeth number difference, the optimization problem of steering mechanism is formulated to achieve minimum dynamic responses and outer diameter by optimizing structural parameters under geometric, kinematic, and strength constraints. An optimization procedure based on modified NSGA-II by incorporating dynamic crowding distance strategies and fuzzy set theory is applied to the multiobjective optimization. For comparative purpose, NSGA-II is also employed to obtain Pareto optimal set, and dynamic responses of original and optimized designs are compared. The results show the optimized design has better dynamic responses with minimum outer diameter and the response decay decreases faster. The optimization procedure is feasible to the design of gear train, and this study can provide guidance for designer at the preliminary design phase of mechanical structures with gear train.

Abstract:
In vocational institution, practicum activities can be done by using a bridge simulator, such as in the nautical study program, which has a steering component in the simulator. In our engineering study program, we tried to design a ship steering simulation by comparing an incremental rotary encoder sensor with an infrared sensor to determine the direction and degree of rotation. The steering gear is a very important tool of a ship because it determines the safety of the ship. Therefore, the rudder must meet the requirements set by SOLAS 74 rule 29 Chapter II regarding steering gear. When the ship is traveling at maximum economic speed, the main steering gear must be able to steer 35 degrees to the left/right within 28 seconds. In connection with this, we wanted to design, build, and manufacture a tool that can simulate ship steering. This simulation tool that we have designed generally has several capabilities such as being able to steer the ship from 35 degrees port to 35 degrees starboard, or vice versa, during maximum engine speed and load in a maximum period of 28 seconds. [1] Arduino is used to process data from incremental rotary encoder sensors and infrared sensors which will be sent via serial USB to the computer. Rotary encoders and infrared are used to determine how many degrees the ship will turn right or left, both are compared in terms of time and accuracy. To display a ship's steering simulation, a visual basic application is used to display a ship's movement simulation, ship's steering and ship's rudder.

Globalization has led to the advancement of science and technology in all aspects of human life. The rapid development of science and technology significantly influences both learning methods and employment. As a result, many effective learning methods are being utilized, and one of them is the control system in electric steering gear, which enables the remote control of auxiliary machinery. Therefore, the creation of a demonstration tool for auxiliary machinery on ships is highly suitable for the era of globalization. The type of demonstrative tool created by the author is an updated version of the electric steering gear with remote control capabilities. The Research and Development method is employed in this study, which involves a process or steps to develop a new product or improve existing ones, including both hardware and software components. The model used in this development research is the procedural model, outlining the sequential and gradual steps from the initial process to the final one. The construction of the demonstrative tool for the updated electric steering gear involves three electronic modules: the ESP 8266 module, the Servo Motor, and the Wi-Fi module. The ESP functions as the microcontroller, the Servo Motor is responsible for the steering direction and angle position control, while Wi-Fi serves as the control medium. The author has made improvements to the electric steering gear demonstrative tool, which typically uses a lever, by implementing smartphone control as a substitute. The working system of this demonstrative tool is to set the degree of the steering angle position and respond to control signals by moving the shaft to the desired position. This system functions with the support of the automation control system provided by the electronic modules.

Abstract:
The steering gear system is part of the group of vital installations for a ship. Its role is to ensure course stability and, at the same time, to facilitate the changes of navigation direction. In this context, the technology for assembling the system is well-defined through rules, procedures, and work instructions. A steering system that is correctly assembled according to the instructions and execution drawings will lead to proper operation and, at the same time, the successful completion of applicable steering system tests. The applicable tests for steering systems are depending to the type and purpose of the vessel. However, SOLAS defines a series of general high-level tests that must be performed, and during these tests, the quality of the installation is to be demonstrated. The present work will develop both the subject of the steering gear installation, which directly influences the results of the tests.

Abstract This paper mainly studies and designs the control system of a four-degree-of-freedom manipulator. As a motion control system, the control system is mainly oriented to the bottom, striving to develop an industrial manipulator system with high stability, strong reliability, and accurate positioning. Firstly, according to the control requirements of the mechanical arm system, a single CPU system control scheme is designed as a whole, that is, to control the steering gear rotation by controlling the duty cycle of the PWM wave output by the central controller, to achieve the position control of each joint. In terms of hardware, the main components are ARM microprocessor STM32F103ZET6, MG995 steering gear, MG945 steering gear, ultrasonic sensor, and power module. The joint motion control system is built by building a hardware platform and designing a software control program. In software design, the control program is divided into an initialization module and an operation module according to the modular design idea, and the program of each module is designed separately.

Abstract:
Recirculating ball (RCB) steering gear with four-bar linkage steering system is widely used in commercial vehicles with rigid front axle and over slung suspension owing to their architectural arrangement. The usage of RCB steering gear with four-bar linkage steering system with underslung suspension is not commercialized globally due to complexity of packaging suspension and steering linkages. Few automotive OEMs have studied and implemented Y link steering system in place of four-bar linkage steering system for underslung suspension arrangement. Y link steering system has got its inherent disadvantages such as higher bump steer, poor self-centering, complex linkages, more number of parts and less tire life. Further this arrangement is comparatively costlier than four-bar linkage steering system owing to their higher number of parts. In this paper, an extensive analysis has been made to implement the four-bar linkage steering system for underslung suspension vehicle. In this arrangement, the track rod (one of the links of a four-bar linkage system) is packaged above the leaf spring unlike in vehicles with overslung spring. Due to this unique arrangement, there exists some challenges in critical parameter optimization and packaging which are addressed in this paper. A mathematical model was developed to arrive at optimum steering and suspension geometry inorder to reduce the Ackerman error for better tire life and improve vehicle handling characteristics. By solving this mathematical model, optimum hardpoints can be arrived to achieve less Ackerman error, lower steering effort, lower bump steer, better steering returnability and best in class tire life. The present paper shows a possible approach to define the optimized steering and suspension linkages from the existing complex geometry with underslung suspension. This attempt is first of its kind in automotive industry and if commercialized successfully will go a long way in improving steering performance and cost savings for the vehicles with underslung suspension.

Abstract:
In an automated steering system of the self-driving vehicles, the steering wheel angle is measured by the absolute angular displacement sensors or relative angle sensors. However, these sensors either encompass global navigation satellite systems (GNSS)/gyroscope – Micro Electromechanical-Sensor (MEMS) based solutions or comprise of the complex gear-based mechanical structure which results in latency and additive bias in the accumulative steering angle assessment. To address these issues, we propose a novel steering angle assessment system based on enhanced gear mechanism along with the adapted rotation paradigm for the customized self-driving vehicles. Additionally, a digital signal processing system has been introduced to resolve the issues in the identification of absolute central and max-bounding steering wheels position in self-driving vehicles. In assistance with the proposed mechanism, an algorithm has also been proposed to optimize the computed steering angle to minimalize the effect of additive bias in the accuracy. The proposed mechanism has been installed in the customized self-driving testbed vehicle and rigor validation has been performed in the straight and curvy road scenarios. Finally, the comparison study has been carried out between the conventional relative sensor and the proposed mechanism to show the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed mechanism in terms of error rate, stability, and deviation.

Abstract:
The article focuses on developing synthesis methods for automatic heading control systems for the rudder-controlled sea vessel. The solution of the problem of vessel heading control is carried out in the conditions of heavy sea. The disturbing effect of the external water environment causes the vessel yawning, which results in exceeding activity of the steering gear. This leads to its increased wear and loss in the longitudinal speed of the vessel. To reduce the wave effect there has been supposed an approach based on the additionally introduced internal model of the ship dynamics. The given approach is aimed at improving the operation of the steering gear in rough seas. To implement the proposed algorithm, changes are made to the original system by introducing an internal model in parallel to the control object and modifying the feedback channel of the control system. To describe the sea vessel dynamics there is used the 1st order Nomoto model, the steering gear model is implemented in accordance with the imposed speed limits and the rudder shift value. Wave disturbance is close to harmonic disturbance. The identification of the parameters of the internal model can be carried out in advance, both by maneuvering tests and by the process of operation. Numerical simulations carried out in the MATLAB/Simulink system confirmed the advantage of the proposed approach. The synthesis of control in a system with an internal model makes it possible to significantly neutralize the influence of wave disturbance. The modifications introduced to the original control system help to improve functioning of the steering gear, significantly reducing the number of rudder shifts during operation.
