By studying the archives of the feudal Lords of Southern Italian between the 14th-16th centuries you can understand the real nature of their power and how it was expressed. The volume, which takes into account the most recent historiography, relies on the study and inventory of important documentary collections held in the Archivio di Stato of Naples, such as the Sommaria (Relevi with the files for feudal succession; Dipendenze, I, Conti erariali dei feudi and Diversi, with the seigneurial account books acquired by the State of those lord who had been rebellious or had died without heirs). The authors deal also with the cartularies (‘platee’) of aristocratic dynasties as the Ruffo and the Sanseverino, based in Calabria, and with the parchments of the Albertini from Nola. Thanks to the rich information derived by these archival series and account books, the authors bring new light on the seigneurial powers, the typology of the records produced by and for the Lords, the administration of their estates, the strategy for elaborating the family memory.

Il volume raccoglie otto saggi sulla cultura economica e giuridica in Italia nel periodo tra le due guerre mondiali. Alcuni di essi indagano sul rapporto tra regime fascista e intellettuali, come nel caso del giurista Alfredo Rocco e degli economisti Luigi Amoroso, Arrigo Serpieri e Alberto Bertolino. Altri scritti affrontano il tema dei modi e dei luoghi attraverso cui l’economia e il diritto furono divulgati nel periodo fascista. I casi approfonditi sono quelli dell’Università Bocconi di Milano e della Scuola di Scienze Corporative di Pisa. Due saggi, infine, si occupano della politica economica nella fase liberista del fascismo e della natura assunta dal dibattito giuridico sul problema corporativo, individuando in queste esperienze momenti dell’evolversi del rapporto tra Stato e mercato.

The work of the Paduan humanist Albertino Mussato is the focus of this chapter. Mussato shared many of Nicholas Trevet’s views on the nature and purview of prophetic inspiration: he turned away from a predictive, apocalyptic understanding of prophecy and saw the workings of the Spirit in philosophical poetry, which combined harmonious expression with ethical import. Yet unlike Trevet, Mussato was a layman, and he staked his claim to prophetic status as a poet in opposition to much of scholastic and clerical tradition. Mussato thus became involved in a polemical exchange with a local Dominican more concerned with articulating limits than with furthering the implications of work such as Trevet’s. By insisting that the prophetic office could not be restricted to the professional theologian, Mussato encapsulated the complicated manner in which multiple strands of the medieval prophetic tradition intertwined.

This piece considers the paradoxical reception of Vitruvius and his text, De architectura, as a bellwether of attitudes towards traditionally marginal texts and authors within the discipline of classics. Classicizing figures of the Renaissance such as Alberti sought to emulate Vitruvius’ architectural recommendations but criticized his prose. A break from the holistic esteem in which Vitruvius was held in earlier ages, such attacks on Vitruvius’ Latinity catalysed distinct patterns in the reception of De architectura, placing the text and its author (though not his architectural aesthetics) on the margins of ‘the classical’. A survey of more recent critics suggests that such prejudices about Vitruvius’ style and social status remain embedded even in sympathetic treatments of De architectura and that Vitruvius’ choice of Cicero as a literary model all but guarantees his continued marginality within classics as a literary discipline.

Between 1962 and 1971, the Centro Latinoamericano de Altos Estudios Musicales (CLAEM) of the Di Tella Institute in Buenos Aires became the central hub of Latin American avant-garde music. With the support of the Rockefeller Foundation and the wealthy Di Tella family, CLAEM offered two-year fellowships to some of the most recognized young composers of the region to undertake graduate studies in a unique privileged setting under the direction of Alberto Ginastera and with permanent and visiting faculty that included Gerardo Gandini, Francisco Kröpfl, Mario Davidovsky, Iannis Xenakis, Luigi Nono, Aaron Copland, Luigi Dallapiccola, Bruno Maderna, Riccardo Malipiero, Olivier Messiaen, Roger Sessions, and Earle Brown. This book combines oral histories, ethnographic research, and archival sources to reveal CLAEM as a meeting point of US and Argentine philanthropy, local experiences in transnational currents of artistic experimentation and innovation, and regional discourses of musical Latin Americanism. The story of CLAEM shows how musical avant-gardes were articulated, embodied, resignified, and institutionalized in Latin America; how composers during the 1960s engaged with discourses of Latin Americanism as professional strategy, identification marker, and musical style; and sheds light into the role of art in the legitimation and construction of elite status and identity. By looking at CLAEM as both an artistic and a philanthropic project, the book illuminates the relationships among foreign policy, corporate interests, and funding for the arts concerning Latin America and the United States in the mid-twentieth century.

Il volume affronta il rapporto tra la sicurezza integrata (intesa come l’insieme degli interventi assicurati dai diversi livelli territoriali di governo, al fine di concorrere, alla promozione e all’attuazione di un sistema unitario e integrato di sicurezza per il benessere delle comunità territoriali) e il welfare di comunità (inteso come l’insieme delle azioni che istituzioni e comunità territoriali realizzano per creare un senso condiviso di benessere e una maggiore inclusione sociale). L’obiettivo è quello di offrire un contributo alla riflessione che, negli ultimi tempi, si va sviluppando intorno all’evoluzione che ha aperto la nozione giuridica di sicurezza oltre il nucleo primigenio della tutela all’integrità fisica delle persone e dei loro beni, per agganciarla alla questione sociale e ai temi del welfare, con un approccio integrato non solo a livello istituzionale, ma anche sociale, grazie all’apporto di quella “capillare” rete di prossimità fatta di singoli cittadini, enti e associazioni del c.d. privato sociale. I diversi contributi ospitati, in questo senso, offrono uno sguardo, interdisciplinare e teorico-pratico, su alcune delle principali manifestazioni di tale complesso rapporto. Infatti, se la sicurezza integrata deve essere intesa come una richiesta di protezione complessiva, allora essa non può prescindere né dai meccanismi attraverso cui la Repubblica garantisce i diritti e redistribuisce risorse e oneri, né dalla partecipazione attiva dei cittadini e delle comunità, le cui energie possono (e devono) essere valorizzate non solo nella realizzazione di specifici interventi, ma anche nella loro ideazione e programmazione, in conformità con le recenti previsioni del Codice del Terzo settore.
