Abstract:
Against a backdrop of crisis in cultural prescription, this thesis analyzes a professional group of public service cultural intermediaries, the music programmers at Radio France. Faced with the loss of audience for music radio stations, competition from streaming platforms and the introduction of digital technologies into the professional practices of music programming at Radio France, how are the boundaries of a public service professional group evolving ? Subjected to public service missions that give them an a priori singular role in the radio space - and more broadly in the cultural space - the study of the professional practices of Radio France's music programmers constitutes a fertile field of research for understanding the mutations of music prescription as well as the contemporary stakes of public service radio. From an interactionist perspective and with an inductive and comprehensive methodological approach, this work is based on an analysis of the "narratives of practice" of music programmers delivered in interviews, but also on interviews conducted with other professional groups involved in music programming at Radio France. Conducted between 2016 and the beginning of 2020, these interviews are complemented by the analysis of a corpus of contemporary official documents

Abstract:
Telecommunication systems are expanding around the world. From infrastructure networks to macro and pico systems, including RBS (Radio Base Station). To ensure the availability of RBS during a shortage on the electricity grid,EricssonABdeveloped BBS (Battery Base Stations) and BBU (Battery Base Units). The battery temperature is very critical to the battery life and the battery’s electrical performance. Taking energy efficiency and environmental issues in consideration, the need of a battery thermal management system increases. Therefore, sustainability is included to the core of this project. The performance of VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead-Acid) backup batteries for telecommunication RBS can be greatly improved by keeping an adequate control of the battery temperature. A solid relation between temperature and battery lifetime exists, which urges the need to keep batteries around their optimal life and performance temperature; 25°C. Different ways of cooling currently used atEricssonABare presented in this paper, including different ways of improving the cooling system performance. By testing, the variation of battery temperature with different air gaps separating the batteries were monitored. Other cooling methods, such as liquid cooling and PCM (Phase Change Materials) were also studied. Literature studies and test results showed a promising potential for such technologies to be granted green light to be used for future products. Tests were made to study the thermal conduction within battery cells. The efficiency of liquid cooling was tested as well; a cold plate heat exchanger was manufactured and used for the preliminary testing.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the energy efficiency of cellular networks. It studies the dominant power consumer in future cellular networks, the Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio Base Station (BS), and proposes mechanisms that enhance the BS energy efficiency by reducing its power consumption under target rate constraints. These mechanisms trade spare capacity for power saving. First, the thesis describes how much power individual components of a BS consume and what parameters affect this consumption based on third party experimental data. These individual models are joined into a component power model for an entire BS. The component model is an essential step in analysis but is too complex for many applications. It is therefore abstracted into a much simpler parameterized model to reduce its complexity. The parameterized model is further simplified into an affine model which can be applied in power minimization. Second, Power Control (PC) and Discontinuous Transmission (DTX) are identified as promising power-saving Radio Resource Management (RRM) mechanisms and applied to multi-user downlink transmission. PC reduces the power consumption of the Power Amplifier (PA) and is found to be most effective at high traffic loads. DTX mostly reduces the power consumption of the Baseband (BB) unit while interrupting transmission and is better applied in low traffic loads. Joint optimization of these two techniques is found to enable additional power-saving at medium traffic loads and to be a convex problem which can be solved efficiently. The convex problem is extended to provide a comprehensive power-saving Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) frame resource scheduler. The proposed scheduler is shown to reduce power consumption by 25-40% in computer simulations, depending on the traffic load. Finally, the thesis investigates the influence of interference on power consumption in a network of multiple power-saving BSs. It discusses three popular alternative distributed uncoordinated methods which align DTX mode between neighbouring BSs. To address drawbacks of these three, a fourth memory-based DTX alignment method is proposed. It decreases power consumption by up to 40% and retransmission probability by around 20%, depending on the traffic load.

Abstract:
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior
The growing demand for mobile telephony services and the advent of new technologies requires their continued expansion, in order to ensure safe, reliable and high quality to its users. As a direct consequence of this growth has been the need to increase the amount of Radio Base Stations (RBS) to be installed. This expansion may have visual impacts and damage to the health of the population in the surrounding areas of the base stations, seeking always the best practices for the deployment of base stations. This model is based on policies that allow for expansion of services of mobile networks and, at the same time reduce the visual impact of these facilities as well as damage to the health of the surrounding area of the population, in a complementary manner to the applicable legislation. This concern is motivated by the loss of quality of service presented by the mobile operators, due especially to the poor distribution of antenna signal distributors. The objective of this work is to make a diagnosis of the spatial distribution of Radio Base Stations in the city of Fortaleza, focusing on its normative aspects and the current management system and supervision of those cell sites. The technical and regulatory aspects of installations of base stations used in mobile telephony will be searched, focusing the case study in Fortaleza, in addition to identifying the public agencies responsible for managing the inspection of cell sites in this municipality, and establish their respective responsibilities. For this, the methodology used in the study is based on qualitative exploratory research, using the deductive method of approach, performing literature, through the consultation of books, periodicals, theses, dissertations and legislation available on mobile telephony in Brazil and world, its normative aspects and criteria for installation of base stations. Also we used a field survey, through structured interviews managers of public agencies responsible for the management and supervision of RBS. The study showed that Fortaleza has 843 base stations registered by ANATEL (2014), with 6.8 million active mobile lines. Research by the SEUMA showed, among other aspects, despite the demands of municipal law in 8914, supervising or is done randomly, or from accusations of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"disagreement\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" made by the people and that the body responsible not talk to one itself.

Abstract:
This study is a comparative examination of approaches to talk radio as a genre on three Ugandan radio stations. The aim is to draw conclusions, from observations made about these stations, about the potential of talk radio to encourage public debate around social issues and improve democratic participation despite pertinent challenges in Uganda. The study first outlines a theoretical framework, which is informed by Habermas's theory of the media as a 'public sphere'. This framework is applied to an exploration of traditions of talk radio that have emerged globally in order to assess the potential of these traditions to play a role in contributing to the establishment of such a 'public sphere'. The study then goes on to discuss the historical development of radio in Uganda and the establishment of the current broadcast landscape. The focus is on the way in which this history has been defined by a struggle around public expression, in which government has repeatedly sought ways to control media as a vehicle for public expression. It is proposed that Ugandan talk radio has the potential to play an important role in ensuring broad participation in public expression. It is against this background that the study then describes and analyses the development of the talk genre at three Ugandan radio stations (each one an example of, respectively, a commercial, community and public service station). It is explained that staff on all three stations emphasise the importance of talk radio in encouraging participation, by their audiences, in the public debate of social and political issues. It is argued that, because of limitations that exist within these stations, none of the talk show teams fully realize the potential of the genre for participation in such debate. The picture that emerges is one of unequal access, with those sections of radio audiences in positions of privilege being further empowered, while those on the margins remain excluded from public discussion. The study finally recommends ways to improve public participation on Ugandan talk radio, noting the need to review government support, the problems of organizational culture within the stations, the need for more guidelines on practical arrangements around talk show production and the question of contradictions that exist at policy level.

Abstract:

Future wireless communication systems will utilize the spatial properties of the wireless channel to improve the spectral efficiency and thus increase capacity. This is realized by deploying multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver. Utilizing the spatial properties of the channel demands channel models that properly reflect these characteristics. Due to the unpredictable nature of the wireless channel, a common approach is to model its effects in a statistical fashion. A few large world wide cooperations, like the 3GPP or WINNER projects, have developed channel models intended for reference and standardization use. These models are partly based on bulk parameters which describe the characteristics of the channel over larger areas of several wavelengths. These parameters include shadow fading, angle spread, and delay spread among others, and are within the WINNER project called large scale (LS) parameters. Considering the variations of these parameters, it is likely that they are correlated between closely located areas. Therefore it is of key interest to model their correlation properties instead of randomizing them independently for each new simulation. In multi-cell scenarios, when considering macro diversity or evaluation other properties such as interference and/or handover schemes, the intra site correlation of the shadow fading parameters should be taken into account for proper simulations. Neglecting this correlation the interference could be over/under estimated, hence the system capacity can be over/under estimated. Further, reliable estimations of the interference levels will increase the frequency reuse, and may even permit reuse within the same cell, on spatially separated links. The thesis focuses on modelling the statistics and variations of these parameters to increase accuracy of channel models. Previous studies have looked at the autocorrelation properties of the shadow fading in outdoor environments and found it to follow an exponential decay. This means that an first order autoregressive function would be sufficient to model this effect. Research of the angular spread parameter is more scarce, and therefor this issue is studied herein. In addition to the autocorrelation properties the intra-site correlation between the different large scale parameters is of interest. It is herein found that the shadow fading is negatively correlated with angle spreads, while the angle spread at the base station and the angle spread at the mobile show positive correlation. Finally, the inter site correlation between one mobile and multiple base stations is studied as a function of the angular separation between the links. For closely located base station, ie with small angular separation as seen from the mobile, substantial inter-site correlation is found. It is further seen that the correlation of the shadow fading is more prominent than the correlation of angle spread.

Abstract:
This thesis is a case study analysis of the dream one radio station had about creating something new and unique on the Internet. RadioSonderGrense (RSG), an Afrikaans South African radio station, saw opportunities for themselves as a radio station on the Internet and put enormous resources and man-power into their venture. Their vision of what the Internet could bring to their radio station, and what they could bring to a website set the ground for creative and innovative thought. This dissertation is an examination of whether the Internet lived up to the expectations RSG had for it, and whether they were able to use their resources (in terms of their audience, their advertisers and the uniqueness of radio) to create something new and never seen before. The foremost aim of this dissertation is to shed some light onto the up-to-now under researched area of why radio stations have begun to develop on the Internet. Through the analysis of RSG, their comes to this subject some new thoughts and ideas about the convergence of these two mediums. RSG, and radio in general, are examined historically, practically and in comparison to the Internet. This is done in order to fully grasp the project that RSG had set for themselves and to realize where they had come from and where they hoped to go. It is argued that although RSG had hoped for great things, their innovative thought was not enough to guarantee them their dreams. They were not able to fully utilize the resources available to them in combination with what the Internet could offer them to fulfill the expectations they had for themselves. The foremost conclusion is that although RSG were able to envisage what the Internet could add to the radio station, they fell short of giving their listeners, users and advertisers a tool which could make the RSG website truly unique. Their website gives the user some interesting and useful applications, but it does not make full use of what the Internet and radio together could create.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to produce signal relay stations that could receive information via 2.4 GHz radio and relay the information to a designated target station. If a relay station was located outside of signal range for the target station it was supposed to utilize other relay stations to transfer the information to the target station, so called multi-hop. The would-be application of the relay stations was orienteering. When an orienteer punches a checkpoint the signal stations would relay information of who punched the control, when it was punched and the checkpoint that was punched to the speaker tower in the goal area. The work resulted in prototypes which fulfilled the statement of purpose and was tested at an orienteering competition with satisfactory results. The performance of the prototypes was tested and found adequate for the would-be application.

Abstract:
Community radio in Thailand is an alternative to public, commercial and state radio with unique characteristics in that listeners can participate at all levels. Community radio varies considerably in its definitions as well as serving several purposes depending on its role in the nation's media system. However, its fundamental philosophy is similar in that radio is used to serve the needs and the interests of the community. Access and participation in small-scale media may not only empower the voiceless, but also maintain local identity and cultures. The reformation of the Thai broadcasting media system by Section 40 of the 1997 constitution and the 2000 Broadcasting Act has increased the chance for some communities to use radio to fulfill their community development needs. The aims of this thesis are: to explore Thai community radio in the broader context of community radio internationally; to examine Thai broadcasting policies on community radio; to explore the development of Thai community radio in relation to the wider liberalisation of the media between 1998 and 2002; and to analyse similarities and differences in station management, programming and audience reception in the four different models of community radio that developed in a range of different provincial Thai community radio stations. A comparative case study using qualitative research methods was used to examine the four case studies, namely at Petchaburi (PRD, 1998) Nakhon Si Thammarat (MCOT, 1998), Roi Et (INN, 2000), and Kanchanaburi (people's radio, 200 I). The contribution of this thesis lies in its exploration of different models of Thai community radio so as to illustrate different interpretations by several stakeholders of community radio discourse, as well as reflecting the constraints on community broadcasting caused by the political economy of the broadcasting system and regulatory inconsistencies. It concludes that community radio has not yet contributed to a more empowered media because of several constraints. Thai community radio did not pursue real participatory communication to empower its listeners. It merely widened the public space for local communities to have more choices for information community-based programs with phone-in formats that provided twoway communication. Thai community radio has not created a wider liberalisation of the media, however, its development facilitated media democratisation through promoting the media reform process, and increasing the awareness of citizens' rights among ordinary people. Station manager and middle-class activists played important roles in putting forth local issues for public discussion. Increasing numbers of local people became alert to their rights to communicate as promised by the 1997 constitution, but unfortunately media reform lacked government support. The Thaksin government had an ambivalent attitude and contradictory policies towards community radio.

Abstract:
An increase in Internet radio adverting spending is negatively affecting the revenue of traditional radio stations. Some general managers and sales directors at traditional radio stations lack marketing strategies to compete effectively with Internet radio. Grounded by the attitude toward the ad theory, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore marketing strategies that successful general managers and sales directors used at traditional radio stations to compete effectively with Internet radio. The population consisted of 8 general managers and sales directors at traditional radio stations located in southeast Florida, who demonstrated success in developing marketing strategies to compete with Internet radio. Data were collected from semistructured face-to-face interviews and marketing campaign literature. The process of member checking improved the credibility of the analysis and interpretations. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify keywords, phrases, and concepts. The process led to the following 4 key themes: (a) evolution of Internet radio, (b) traditional radio and Internet media platforms, (c) marketing strategies to yield results, and (d) effectiveness of marketing tactics. The findings from the study may contribute to positive social change by providing knowledge useful in improving the lives of consumers by providing targeted messages regarding needed goods and services through free media.

Abstract:
The thesis investigates community radio as a tool for development drawing on case studies of Nkhotakota and Mzimba community radio stations in Malawi. The thesis employs communication for development and ‘another’ development theories to help understand the role of community radio in development. The research aims are firstly, to investigate the extent and ways in which community radio is used as a tool for development through audience participation; and secondly to examine the extent to which communication for development in community radio in Malawi takes the form of participatory communication. Using the case study approach (Yin, 2009), the thesis specifically examines the functions of participation in development through community radio; whether community radio can encourage development through enhancing capabilities and participation even when people do not own and manage the stations; how radio listening Clubs (RLCs) help to expand people’s capabilities; and how the programming of community radio in Malawi is influenced by the agendas of development agencies. Arnstein’s (1969) ladder of participation and Carpentier’s (2011) minimalist and maximalist versions of participation are adopted as criteria for evaluating the different levels of participation in and through community radio. The findings show that community radio in Malawi firstly, affords ordinary people opportunities to participate in the media and in development projects and, secondly informs people about development initiatives from development agencies. Although these functions overlap, the thesis finds that community radio stations in Malawi concentrate more on the latter. The programming of the stations is influenced by the agendas of development agents who sponsor programmes thereby reducing opportunities for participation. However, although people’s participation in the media is low or reduced, there are other ways in which through the media, people can benefit, enhance their capabilities and through which development agencies can reach their goals. The thesis argues that the radio stations fit well with an approach to development related to building capabilities (Sen, 1992) because they sometimes give people resources to enhance their capabilities and sometimes act as partners with development agencies and government, facilitating a variety of development goals. The thesis concludes that community radio in Malawi enables capabilities although very rarely through fully-fledged participation.

Abstract:
This project aims to detect possible anomalies in the resource consumption of radio base stations within the 4G LTE Radio architecture. This has been done by analyzing the statistical data that each node generates every 15 minutes, in the form of "performance maintenance counters". In this thesis, we introduce methods that allow resources to be automatically monitored after software updates, in order to detect any anomalies in the consumption patterns of the different resources compared to the reference period before the update. Additionally, we also attempt to narrow down the origin of anomalies by pointing out parameters potentially linked to the issue.

Abstract:
The amount of coexisting norms in cellular networks is responsible for increasing the number of base-station antennas. There is no more space to add antennas, especially in urban zones due to the resulting visual pollution. Therefore, optically transparent radiating devices become an attractive alternative. They can be integrated in structures such as buildings glazed surfaces or along the facades still not used for antenna support. A state-of-the-art of optically transparent materials suitable for radiating devices is presented. One solution is to use thick meshed conductors mounted on a glass substrate. A high resolution meshing gives conductors with good electrical performances, however nearly invisible regarding human visual acuity. Therefore, they can be used to design high performance devices. Some optically transparent antennas, based on meshed conductor technology are also presented. Most are made in microstrip technology. Their narrow bandwidth and poor Gain are not compatible with requirements of base-station antennas. However, advanced antenna designs may help to achieve good performances but they must be adapted to use glass substrates. This thesis presents antennas and antenna arrays designed using two different processes enabling the achievement of a dual-polarized see-through antenna, with 30% bandwidth, and 7dBi Gain for VSWR<1. 5:1, along with more than 30dB isolation between two polarizations

Abstract:
The numerous changes that happened in the domain of radiotelephony in Africa can be analysed in diverse ways. This research has optioned to address these by means of its relationship with religion. Religious discourse seems to have constituted a sector of choice for the African diffusers. What are the issues, the functions and the contents of this tendency? What place does religion occupy in the African radio at present and what place does it have in its future? How do the media use religious discourse and, inversely, what use do religious leaders make of the media? These are some of the questions that this research responds to. It constitutes a contribution to the Science of Information and Communication in a double dimension: the study of media and study of the communication of organisations

Abstract:

The advanced signal processing systems of today require extreme data throughput and low power consumption. The only way to accomplish this is to use parallel processor architecture.

The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the use of parallel processor architecture in baseband signal processing. This has been done by implementing three demanding algorithms in LTE on Ambric Am2000 family Massively Parallel Processor Array (MPPA). The Ambric chip is evaluated in terms of computational performance, efficiency of the development tools, algorithm and I/O mapping.

Implementations of Matrix Multiplication, FFT and Block Interleaver were performed. The implementation of algorithms shows that high level of parallelism can be achieved in MPPA especially on complex algorithms like FFT and Matrix multiplication. Different mappings of the algorithms are compared to see which best fit the architecture.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the emergence and current situation of community radio stations in Taiwan, which have been perceived as an important part of a media public sphere for people to access and participate in. It therefore needs to consider community and community radio stations in both Western and Taiwanese contexts, and work by Habermas and others concerning the `public sphere' with reference to the current situation. In-depth interviews, content analysis and document analysis have been used in collecting research data. The factors which influence the development of community radio stations as an aspect of the public sphere in Taiwanese society are shown to be the impact of the state, in the first place, and then commercial market pressures. In addition, the development of communication technology has shown its potential effects by re-defining the meaning of `community' and `radio station'. The research goes on to examine the institution and output of the community radio stations, their interaction with society, and their relationship with their users. We find that the development of community radio stations in Taiwan is characterised by diverse formations: they are public spaces for the members of community to share and discuss public issues; they are hybridised public spheres for people to share personal emotion and talk about private affairs; they are also an expansion of the broadcasting market to further commercial interests. However, this development of community radio stations reflects the social reality of the existing and necessarily plural public spheres

As the Internet plays an important role on modern living, it makes changes both customers and enterprises. And the broadcasting market also alters when listeners and companies take new possibilities on the development of virtual world. As a result of it, managers have already assessed their strategies to the Internet use, mainly on the way to make their marketing. With the theme Marketing Strategies Via Internet, this dissertation registers a multiple study of case carried out with four broadcasting companies in Fortaleza city, which performs on the segment of young people. And outcomes point out to variety setting when the theme is the use of electronic marketing (E-Marketing). It is verified, for example, the existence of an sender whom not yet it desires to invest in the Internet, for distrust to lose hearing and for not to consider the appropriate moment; another one already thinks about investing more fort in action of marketing for the net, although not to have initiated these changes in the practical one; one third sender is affiliated to the one strategical national net and no decision are not taken local; while it has an example of a radio that already was born strategically come back toward Internet, also, carrying through its action of marketing of electronic form. Also one evidences that the senders use the Internet mainly as tool of promotion of the made up of marketing, with emphasis in the spreading of sender through its sites. Although to recognize that web innovated the form to interact with its listeners, the Interactivity it is carried through of form limited for the studied senders. They not they possess, for example, politics defined for use of Interactivity in the elaboration and maintenance of data bases efficient or for the accomplishment of research to know better its public. Under the point of view of the Internet as surrounding for accomplishment business-oriented electronic (E-Business), the managers not they are stimulated. They point the advertiser absence and costs with the Internet as main limitors so that its sites give financial return currently. However, responsible for the senders they show good expectations for accomplishment business-oriented electronic in the future. Although the uncertainties, the Internet, in the generality, is not seen by the managers as a threat but rather as a tool that supports the radio that we know today. It is common sense between them that the conviviality of the radio with the Internet is inevitable.

Abstract:

This study examines the work habits and news products produced by commercial and non-profit radio news operations at the local, or affiliate, level. Specifically, the focus is on the perception and utilization of internet audience data that measures stories on a radio station’s website. A survey of 332 commercial and non-profit radio newsroom decision-makers discovered how they feel about web audience data and how they act on it. A statistical analysis, informed by a theoretical background including Institutionalism and Resource Dependence Theory was conducted for this study. The predictor variables were the degree of perceived uncertainty, whether the respondent works in a for-profit or non-profit operation, the length of time the participant has worked in journalism, the tendency to search for information in the environment, and the tendency toward mimicry. The dependent variable was degree of use of web analytics. The findings indicate a positive relationship for both mimicry and information search with the primary dependent variable, use of web analytics data in newsroom decision making. Also, respondents with greater experience levels are marginally less receptive to relying on internet audience data for information search and less likely to mimic the practice of using web analytics. The statistical results did not support hypotheses that predicted effects from perceived uncertainty. While statistical support between perceived uncertainty and the use of web data was not found, a reverse relationship in one hypothesis suggests that use of internet audience data may reduce uncertainty rather than increase it.

Abstract:
This research project was aimed at assessing whether community radio stations are indeed the voice of the community or are set out to fulfil their own agenda. This study therefore looked at three different categories of community radio stations, namely the faith-based radio (Kingfisher FM), geographic community radio (Radio Grahamstown) and institutional community radio (Forte FM) with the aim of studying their activities and comparing the three. Relevant literature has been reviewed and data have been collected using both quantitative and qualitative methods through questionnaires, personal interviews and focus group interviews. The study however leans more on the qualitative approach and a quantitative approach has merely been used to identify the trends of the views of the participants. The analysis of data highlights the views of the respondents about these radio stations as the voice of the community. The views of the respondents from the three radio stations showed that these stations enjoy a very good patronage from the listeners in Port Elizabeth (Kingfisher FM), Grahamstown (Radio Grahamstown) and Alice (Forte FM), respectively. The results and discussions confirm that these radio stations meet their various individual needs of the listeners and that of the community at large. In addition, the fact that participants of the focus groups and survey respondents for these three selected radio stations reported that the Station regularly fulfils the major functions of a radio station, which is to inform, educate and entertain them, showed that these radio stations are acting socially responsible as well. This study was also able to confirm that these community radio stations do give opportunities to listeners to contribute to programme content development, which shows the willingness of these stations to give voice to the listeners and allow them to be part of their own personal development and that of the community at large.

Abstract:
Globally, there are approximately 900 000 telecommunication radio base station sites (RBS-sites)located in areas without access to the electrical grid. Traditionally, these sites are powered by dieselgenerators, consuming large amounts of fossil diesel fuel. Diesel combustion is connected both toenvironmental impacts and high economical expenses for the mobile operators. As the mobilenetwork expansion is increasingly located in off-grid areas of developing countries, the search forrenewable power alternatives has been intensified. This Master thesis presents results from a life cycle assessment (LCA) of photovoltaic and windturbine hybrid power configurations for off-grid RBS-sites. The LCA covers environmental impactsfrom all life cycle activities of the hybrid system: from raw material extraction, manufacturing, andtransportation, to on-site usage, and disposal. To enable assessment of variable hybrid configurations, four scalable sub-models were constructed:one diesel sub-model including the generator and yearly diesel consumption, one back-up batterysub-model, one PV module sub-model and one wind turbine sub-model. Included in the sub-modelswere required site equipment; e.g. foundations for generators, PV modules and battery banks, powerconverters, fuel tanks and possible housings. The number of generators, liters of fuel consumed peryear, number of battery cells, square meters of PV module and number of wind turbines were set asvariables. Hereby RBS-sites with different capacities and availability of renewable source could bemodeled. A hybrid configuration including 21 square meters photovoltaic modules, one wind turbine, a storageof 36 (12 V) batteries and one generator back-up consuming 1500 liters of diesel fuel per year wasevaluated. The hybrid site represents between 11 and 16 percent of the different environmentalimpact potentials, global warming potential specifically representing 13 percent, caused by acorresponding traditional diesel site consuming 20000 liters of fuel per year. The most importantparameters influencing the environmental performance of the renewable hybrid site following thediesel fuel production and combustion are the production energy mix and energy intensive processesincluding the up-stream silicon and lead processing. The thesis confirmed great environmental benefits of using wind and solar power at RBS-sites. Theadditional gain of applying wind power when feasible to decrease the PV module area or batterycapacity required was also demonstrated. The great importance of manufacturing location andelectricity mix should encourage Ericsson to map supplier manufacturing locations, searchingpossibilities to decrease the environmental impacts from the manufacturing phase of the differentsub-systems.

Abstract:
Trouble Reports (TRs) encompass the details of a fault-ended test scenario during Radio Base Stations (RBS) verification phase. TR handling is a daily routine for designers in Ericsson Radio Software Department which has been reversed into a bottleneck. TR handling is a log-centric procedure and getting right information from log files is not easily applicable due to various reasons. In this research, we went first to pinpoint those barriers which put difficulty in TR handling procedure. This phase accomplished with comments from TR handlers combined with standard principles for fault handling. A list of hindrances is recognized by the end of this part of project which introduced the main area we should work for performing improvements in TR handling. In second phase of project, we concentrated on cryptic data as a major barrier in log analysis and consequently in TR handling. Cryptic data refers to hardware state during various intervals which pass useful information about hardware in different settings. Troubleshooters can not easily receive the message from this kind of data due to its low level essence. A solution is proposed to handle this difficulty by helping users with the final message which is passed through cryptic data. We get test settings from log file and try to make an expectation on hardware state during test routine, then we make a comparison between what is expected and what is observed in log file. Any inconvenience between observed value and expected one might indicate a deficiency in relevant blocks. Finding out the expected value in each step is done through two different solutions. At first solution, we dig into calculation details in each block and try to perform all steps in parallel with application but in a safe-mode to make sure that nothing might affect the results. For second solution, we do not engage with calculation complexity. Some test cases are designed to target selected blocks in application and watch out the behavior in any possible configuration. We have a database from all possible states which have impact on a block’s result based on that block’s characteristics. Functional test is run on each Radio separately and presented information in a TR should be compared with recorded data for that specific Radio. These solutions are implemented as a web application which receives Trace and Error log as the source for catching test settings. Then correctness of presented data might be confirmed by recalculation or reading from results of functional test.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Radio is one of the earliest and most powerful of all mass media, which explains its strong potential as a means of moral education, influence on public opinion, and role in public agenda setting. In Israel, educational radio stations operating out of academic institutions have been in operation for more than 50 years, yet no comprehensive study has examined the various aspects of their presence in the media, academic, community, and social spheres. Alongside extensive research on the radio industry, the purpose of the current study is to fill the lacuna in the literature on the role and contribution of educational radio stations operating out of colleges and universities in Israel. The educational radio project is the product of an encounter between two significant branches of Israeli society: One branch is The Voice of Israel, a major public media organization that sponsors the project, and the second, executive branch, is the academic institutions, which are prestigious institutions that train future generations through a variety of means, including intellectual development, knowledge, professional development, and, of course, research. To examine the educational radio stations’ role and contribution, we conducted a mixed methodology research combining qualitative and quantitative methods. To identify the historical milestones in the project’s development, we analyzed documents stored in The Voice of Israel archives, and conducted interviews with the station’s senior executives. Findings indicate that the project underwent several significant, complex, and bureaucratic changes involving important government organizations: the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Communications, and the Broadcasting Authority. Senior ministers of education were most markedly involved in determining the features of the educational radio project. The project, which was initiated in the early 1990s, now boasts 47 educational radio stations currently in operation in over 80 educational institutions including elementary schools, high schools, community centers, colleges, and universities, throughout Israel. The vision of the project’s founders was to develop media professionals with an understanding of the media industry, who would represent non-mainstream formats, issues, and opinions, including a liberal perspective and democratic value

Abstract:
When building various types of wide area cellular radio networks there is a need to synchronize all of the base stations within a given system. Today this is typically done by attaching a highly accurate clock to each radio base station. A GPS radio receiver is commonly used as such a clock. This thesis explores the use of the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) to provide synchronization of radio base stations, rather than the current practice of using GPS radio receivers. Advantages of utilizing PTP rather than a GPS radio receiver include the ability to easily locate radio base stations (without the need for connecting the GPS radio receiver to an antenna that has line of sight to a sufficient number of GPS satellites); the system is not vulnerable to interference with or jamming of GPS radio signals; the system is not vulnerable to spoofing of GPS radio signals, and because the new generations of radio base stations are connected to a packet based backhaul link – the system can potentially utilize the existing packet network interface (thus avoiding the need for a serial interface to the GPS receiver and a pulse per second input). At the start of this thesis project it was not known what the limits of PTP are (in terms of utilizing PTP together with radio base stations). Thus it was not clear whether PTP could be extended to much longer distances than it had originally been designed for.<p> This thesis shows that PTP can be used as an accurate timing source to synchronize base stations in networks with up to four switches between the PTP grandmaster and any PTP slave.<p> This project was performed in the Common Transport Feature department at Ericsson.

Abstract:
This study tested the job satisfaction of major market radio station general managers in the aftermath of deregulation. The study consisted of two phases, a quantitative, anonymous, mail survey utilizing the nationally recognized Job Descriptive Index (JDI); and a qualitative follow-up telephone interview. Of 246 general managers solicited, 144 returned usable JDI surveys. The JDI consisted of six separate scales, each measuring satisfaction on a different aspect of the job. The followup telephone interview comprised seven questions designed specifically to explore the effects of broadcast deregulation on the respondents. Two hypotheses were tested. The hypotheses tested for differences in job satisfaction scores between radio station general managers and the normative scores of individuals of similar education and job tenure in other industries. In most of the subscales tested there was no significant difference between the two groups. The qualitative telephone survey found widespread dissatisfaction with the effects of deregulation on the broadcast medium.

Abstract:
This study uses mixed methods to closely investigate how journalistic role conceptions and perceived attributes of new technologies, among other external forces, shape broadcast journalists' intention and actual use of new media technologies. An integrated model developed from extant technology adoption and role conception theories was used to examine individual journalists' subjective beliefs about new technologies and normative roles. A hundred and forty nine (149) broadcast journalists were drawn from 18 FM radio stations in four southwest states of Nigeria using multi-stage purposive and snowballing techniques. Another set of 18 broadcast journalists of varied background were interviewed in-situ. Factorial analyses confirm the significance of perceived technological attributes in technology adoption. Role conception correlates with technology adoption. Together, they predict broadcast journalists' intention and actual use of new media technologies, with 32% total variance (R2). Multiple regression (stepwise) models also show that a combination of perceived technological attributes (utilitarian, communication and hedonic values), perceived organisational support and agenda, and perceived institutional policy control accounted for between 8-10% of the total variance in broadcast journalists' intention and actual use of new digital technologies. Role conceptions also made significant contribution of between 12-13% of the total variance. Disseminator and civic roles emerged as positive predictors of radio journalists' intention and actual use of new digital technologies. While interpreter role approached significance, adversarial surfaced as a negative predictor. Perceived communication value (PCV) and perceived institutional policy control (PIPC) both emerged as significant predictors of technology use behaviour among Nigerian radio journalists, significant at p ≤ .001. Thematic analyses further substantiate the centrality of perceived attributes of technology such as utilitarian and communication (interactivity) values. Overwhelming impacts of facilitating conditions on adopting new media technologies were recorded. "Gate-watching" and "agenda enhancement" surfaced as neo-normative roles driven by the use of text-based quasi-synchronous social media platforms. Ultimately, the wider social-political and economic conditions in which Nigerian broadcast journalists work shape and constrain their adoption of new digital technologies and journalistic roles, with traces of market-driven approach rather than professional value-creation.

Abstract:
This research project was aimed at investigating strategies that are used for the sustainability of selected rural-based community radio stations in the Transkei area of the Eastern Cape. The study was done under a hypothesis that, in the absence of big business and migration of literate people and skilled labour from rural communities to urban centres, rural-based community radios struggle to attract operational revenue through advertising, community support, etc., and that the supposedly high illiteracy in the rural areas render it difficult to run the stations. Two rural-based community radio stations were selected for this study: Alfred Nzo Community Radio at Mount Ayliff in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality area, and Vukani Community Radio at Cala in the Chris Hani District Municipality area. The aim was to study their activities with regard to the most and widely agreed three-dimensional method of sustaining community radio stations: Financial Sustainability, Institutional Sustainability, and Social Sustainability. Relevant literature has been reviewed and data have been collected using both quantitative and qualitative methods through questionnaires. The study however leans more on the qualitative approach and a quantitative approach has merely been used to identify the trends of the views of the participants. The analysis of data highlights the views of the respondents about these radio stations with regard to their strategies to sustain themselves. The views of the respondents represent all people from all levels of people involved in the stations: From the Member of the Board of Directors in the boardroom to stations’ members of management at their desks. From Presenters behind their microphones to the listener in the dusty streets of the poor rural areas. The results confirm the hypothesis that the areas have high unemployment and illiteracy rates, and that their sustainability depend largely on trade-outs with local business and government support. However, the study also shows that strategies for Financial Sustainability, Institutional Sustainability, and Social Sustainability may overlap or influence each other. For instance, an activity of Institutional Sustainability may result in Financial Sustainability, and visa-versa. The study also reveals that the stations struggle to establish and maintain effective Social Sustainability for the benefit of the station. In the light of this, a proposal for further study and recommendations are given at the end of the study.
