Abstract:
No other decade in the history of figure skating includes a longer list of World champions than the 1970s. Fifteen skaters, seven men and eight ladies, took those honors, with only two from each discipline repeating. Pair skating, however, was dominated almost completely by one skater, the incomparable Irina Rodnina, who with two partners won ten World Championships and three Olympic gold medals. In ice dancing, three couples won World titles, and one became the discipline's first Olympic gold medalists as well. This chapter profiles these exceptional skaters which include Ondrej Nepela (1951–89) of Czechoslovakia, Robin Cousins (b. 1957) of Britain, Toller Cranston (b. 1949) of Canada, Beatrix “Trixi” Schuba (b. 1951) of Austria, and Dorothy Hamill (b. 1956) of the United States.

Abstract:
This chapter studies the dramatic appearance of LSD on the news agenda in reports on scientific studies using drugs to simulate madness, and the concurrent discussion of mystical, mind-expanding drug use sparked by the publication of Aldous Huxley's Doors of Perception. In addressing these topics, journalists introduced American audiences to new drugs and to the use of drugs to create mental states considered to have significant scholarly and academic importance. Scholarly interest gave journalists license to describe drug states that previously had been considered inappropriate for public view. Reports in mainstream media outlets were followed quickly by even more sensational coverage in more marginal publications.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the folk music scene from 1957 to 1958. It discusses the emergence of the Kingston Trio that energized the folk revival; folk festivals and recordings; the continued popularity of skiffle in Great Britain; magazines the covered the folk music scene, including Sing Out! and Caravan; and Alan Lomax's return to the United States after seven years of folk-song collecting across Europe. According to Greenwich Village musician Dave Van Ronk, “the last years of the 1950s were a great time to be in the Village.” “It was not too crazy yet, but there was an exhilarating sense of something big right around the corner. As for the folk scene, it was beginning to look as if it might have a future, and me with it.” What was happening in Greenwich Village was rapidly spreading around the country. Folk music, broadly defined, appeared to have a bright future, while spanning the Atlantic Ocean.
