Abstract:
This thesis is a theoretical study, using both finite element and boundary element methods, of the behaviour of single-piles and pile groups under vertical and lateral loading. It offers an improved understanding of the soil-structure interaction that occurs in pile groups, particularly closely spaced piles subjected to lateral loads. The potential of a two- dimensional idealisation of what is a three-dimensional problem is demonstrated by achieving real insight into the complex nature of pile-soil and pile-soil-pile interaction in pile groups. A new load transfer mechanism is presented for a rigid, axially loaded vertical pile. From this an improvement is then derived to the analytical solution for pile head settlement given by Randolph and Wroth (1978). The improved mechanism has the further merit that it can be applied also to solutions for flexible piles and pile groups. The improved analytical solution is further adapted in the development of two correcting layers specifically for vertically loaded piles to model infinite boundaries in the finite element model. The correcting layers help in establishing superiority of the finite element method over the boundary element method. To model pile-soil interaction, a purely cohesive interface element is developed and then validated by performing various two-dimensional test problems, including stability analysis of flat surface footings. Footing-soil interface tension is successfully modelled in this way - an outcome that entails a significant modification to the Hansen (1970) bearing capacity solution. Stability analysis is also carried out of conical footings using a three-dimensional finite element model: the results help to explain the applicability of the existing bearing capacity theories to conical footings. The ultimate lateral soil reaction is determined and various pile loading stages are investigated through parametric studies. Study of the stage immediately following pile installation (i.e. the consolidation stage) highlights the need to develop an effective stress analysis for laterally loaded piles. Pile-soil interaction is studied using the cohesive interface element presented earlier, which proves to be quite successful in smoothing out the stress discontinuities around the pile. A new material model for frictional soils is presented, and validated by using it to model an extension test: it captures well post-peak behaviour and takes care of the effects of dilation on the response of laterally loaded piles. Finally, mechanisms of interaction in closely spaced pile groups are studied. Simple analytical expressions are derived which quantify the effects of interaction. A new method of analysis is presented for single-piles and pile groups which offers a considerable degree of reliability without having to do either impossibly expensive full scale field tests or prohibitively expensive full three-dimensional analysis using the currently available computers.

Abstract:
Recent studies have set the problem of base station cooperation within the framework of stochastic geometry, where the irregularity of the base station positions can be considered. Some authors study the case when the user can dynamically choose the set of stations cooperating for its service. This assumption is not realistic. Instead, other authors propose to form the groups in a static way. To be optimal, these static methodologies should consider proximity between the base stations to form the groups. We propose a grouping method based on the nearest neighbor model. We allow the formation of singles and pairs of nodes. We derive structural characteristics for these two processes and analyse the resulting interference fields. When the node positions are modelled by a Poisson point process, the processes of singles and pairs are not Poisson, complicating the corresponding analysis. The performance of the original model, however, can be approximated by the superposition of two Poisson point processes. Numerical evaluation shows coverage gains from different signal cooperation that can reach up to 15%, compared with the standard noncooperative case. For the cooperation to be meaningful, each station in a group should have sufficient resources to share, besides being close to each other. Thus, we redefine the nearest neighbors with a metric. The results of our analysis illustrate that cooperation gains strongly depend on the distribution of the available resources over the network

Abstract:
The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) developed a large area static test facility to enable the evaluation of three forms of surface support; namely, mesh, shotcrete and membranes. The purpose of this thesis is to document the test conditions and procedures under which these tests were conducted and to document the outcomes from testing.A review of previous mesh testing established that the most common method used for the evaluation of mesh types was two-dimensional linear elastic analyses, often using catenary principles. These analysis techniques have been used to estimate the tension in the wires of mesh and the strength characteristics of the mesh. These methods assume that forces are only transferred along directly loaded wires and that failure of the mesh is only related to the tensile strength of the wire. The force – displacement response from fully restrained mesh tests conducted at the WASM test facility have been characterised into distinct phases, clearly demonstrating the non-linear behaviour of mesh. The initial force response to displacement is slow; however the force response increases dramatically with further displacement. This behaviour has been shown to follow a cubic relationship. The force – displacement results have also been used to develop load transfer concepts for both weld mesh and chain link mesh. These concepts suggest that forces are transferred away from the directly loaded wires through adjoining wires, distributing forces over a greater area of the mesh. The force capacity of the weld mesh is not only dependent on the tensile strength of the wire but also the quality of the welding process. Likewise, the force capacity of chain link mesh is not only dependent on the tensile strength of the wire but also diamond configuration which allows load to be shared across a greater area of mesh.Several other test conditions were evaluated as part of the test program, including mesh sheet overlaps and wire orientation. The results have demonstrated that the boundary conditions and mesh orientation alters the force – displacement response of mesh. Most current shotcrete testing techniques focus on quality assurance and quality control. Shotcrete support mechanism and failure mechanisms are complex and not well understood. The WASM punch test method was developed to evaluate shotcrete using realistic shotcrete failure mechanisms such as shear and flexural failure and adhesion loss. The behaviour of shotcrete is characterised by an initial stiff reaction followed by rupture of the cement matrix. Rupture generally occurs at displacements of less than 5mm. The rupture force of fibre reinforced shotcrete is dependent only on the cement content of the shotcrete mix and the thickness of the layer, and not on the fibre type. The post rupture reaction of shotcrete is dependent on the reinforcing material; namely fibres or mesh. Mesh reinforced shotcrete had much greater force and displacement capacity compared with fibre reinforced shotcrete.Membranes have two theoretical support models (Norcroft, 2006); namely, the membrane support model and the beam support model. A total of 6 tests were undertaken to investigate the behaviour of a particular membrane product under the two theoretical support models. These tests were aimed at determining a suitable test method that could determine the capacity of the membrane and the behaviour of the membrane under realistic loading conditions. The results from both test programs demonstrated that the membrane has limited force and displacement capacity and cannot be compared with conventional mesh and shotcrete as suggested in the product data sheet. The failure mechanism was shear failure with minimal adhesion loss observed. The development of the WASM test facility has enabled the evaluation and comparison of various surface support elements. The results of this testing have provide a valuable insight into the performance of each of the individual products.

Abstract:
Due to the series of artworks that I realized between 2005 and 2012 between Paris and Shanghai, this thesis proposes to study the group portrait from various angles, it is all about fictitious portraits whose main aim is the place that may hold the viewer facing a variety of social groups, in which represented people remain staring at the spectator in a silent way. These works invite us to reflect on and permeability between the boundaries of art, ethnology and social sciences, on the question of identity gender, intercultural interaction and methods of communication beyond the language of words. However I tried to develop a painting that conveys the possibility of an exchange between the viewer and the represented group of people. A painting in which the model becomes the beholder, and vice versa. Michael Fried's book entitled Absorption and Theatricality: Painting and Beholder served as a support for me in my initial observation of theatricality in painting. Living in Shanghai for the past three years, I have been most inspired by Asian faces. I’ve observed for a long time the functioning of the Chinese society with it’s own social codes which are not limited only to language barriers but can be expressions beyond words. A society that is organized in groups according to various functions and activities where the wearing of the uniform is very common and it runs into various social fronts. We, as humans, strive towards an ideal, a possible success, a utopia where men and women compete for professions, and the role of women have become more visible in society which has been patriarchal for decades. The image of the androgynous appears through a crowd that moves with heavy dancing steps, especially examining the choreography of Jing Xing, this Chinese dancer who was a man originally, and then decided to transform himself into a woman. It is the transition from male to female and vice versa in a society in mutation. This expression generates two kinds of confusion: the ambiguity of gender, where women are increasingly present in a highly competitive professional field on the one hand, and the ambiguity of language and communication for a foreigner in this society. It is the barrier of social codes and the omnipresence of "network" (Guanxi) as an essential tool to penetrate this society. [...]

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the cohesion of Latino groups in American society. It analyses the influence of intra-community relations on the integration of Latinos in American society and deconstructs the representation of Latino communities perceived as a monolithic group allowing to determine to what extent these relationships lead to different assimilation paths. In particular, it shows the differential impact of the relationships between different Latino communities on their integration into American society and investigates the influence of the context of reception on the socio-economic integration of different Latino groups, policies and practices, and, more generally, their political clout. The choice of cities as diverse as Miami, Los Angeles and Boston highlights the importance of the urban context on the formation of relationships between the different Latino groups, and its influence on their integration into American society, as measured by the group strategies that Latinos adopt and their political participation. This analysis is crucial to the understanding of the complex interactions between Latino groups whose relationships are a major challenge, as they allow to anticipate the future of ethnic relations in the United States. This perspective opens to a broader sociological context which may help better comprehend the political and economic issues that the United States will confront in topics such as integration, immigration and representation in the coming decades

Shadlou, Masoud. "Contribution to the static and dynamic response of piles in liquefiable ground." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2016. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.702146.

Abstract:
New and existing superstructures (such as bridges and buildings) supported on pile foundations and located in sites susceptible to liquefaction and lateral spreading are required to be assessed or designed to withstand the actions of extreme loads. As a result, the performance of the piles, foundations, and also superstructures must be estimated/predicted by sufficient accuracy using dynamic analysis. Usually a large number of analyses are required for assessing the performance of a dynamic system and obtaining the analytical fragility functions, as an example. Simplified-conventional solutions may not be accurate enough to address the complex dynamic phenomena involved in soil-pile interaction in liquefiable soil. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to simulate soil-pile system using a reliable method supported by realistic soil constitutive relations surrounding the pile. Therefore, a hypo-elastic bounding surface model has been developed in the framework of the macro-element to underpin and facilitate the concerns of 'performance-based design' and 'risk assessments'. In this case, it is expected that the macro-element approach is able to feedback quick response with high accuracy comparable to sophisticated and complex Finite Element (FE) models. Following the concept of hypo-elasticity, elastic stiffness of the macro-element should be estimated accurately. In this case, an elasto-dynamic solution has been developed for analyzing the soil-pile system under the pile-head and the kinematic earthquake loading. This method is also generalized for different types of pile foundations ranging from the short piles/caissons to long/flexible piles. Validations and verifications of the macro-element approach show its high accuracy on simulating the field test and dynamic centrifuge. It is concluded to move step forward by utilizing the macro-element for soil-pile system in liquefiable ground in order to produce precise results. Finally, a simple method for calculating the dynamic bending moment in pre-liquefaction phase (cyclic mobility phase) is proposed for the geotechnical desk study using the elastic continuum solution.

Abstract:
This ethnographic study describes events and interactions that occurred between a group of teachers involved in a Teachers' Study Group in order to examine the process of transformation and essential transformative conditions. Data collected over a two year period includes field notes from participant observation, audio tape transcriptions, video-tapes, interviews, and written reflections by teachers and the researcher. An analysis of reflective dialogue and assessments by participants determined the transformations, the process of transformative learning that occurred for the participants and the formation of the collective group. Findings from an integrative analysis of discourse determined transformative events and conditions which were socially constructed and facilitated the transformation of individual teachers and the group as a whole. The paradigms underlying research and implementation models on teacher learning and change was examined and challenged. Two major directions were taken in this study. First, the transformation of an individual teacher as she engaged in inquiry through the cyclical progressions of the study group process is presented in a case study. This case study focuses on the construction of meanings and ideologies and the internalization of these meanings and their effects on learning, change and transformation for the teacher. Second, the process of transformation within the context of the study group is explored. This is presented as a case study which examines the transformation of the group showing how the participants constructed "transformative social events" whereby they could "live" and experience transformative learning through critical personal and collective reflection. The data suggests that transformative learning occurs through the process of face-to-face interaction between participants (teachers and researcher) in social contexts designed for the purpose of reflection, learning, and change. In order to understand the process of transformation, it is essential to examine the interrelationship between context and activities that participants use to constitute the culturally, socially, and historically organized social worlds they inhabit. From this view the relationship between context and product (ie. language) is considered a process that emerges and changes. Participants are situated within contexts which are capable of rapid and dynamic change as the event they are engaged in unfold.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the advocacy techniques employed by three state-level child advocacy groups in a mid-western state and to determine the effectiveness of such techniques in influencing policy and legislation. The groups studied were a government-funded bureau, a professional association, and a varied member organization. Each was selected because it met the qualifications set forth for that particular group type. Data collection took place during June and July, 1981.The records examined during data collection included minutes of meetings, publications, fiscal reports, legislative reports and bills, by-laws, and newspaper articles. The data discerned from the records described the groups' founding, objectives, structure, membership, finances, and advocacy strategies, particularly public information campaigns, training, and lobbying efforts. Interviews were conducted with persons knowledgeable of the groups' activities, as necessary.Data were organized into the categories of background information, objectives, membership, structure, funding, and advocacy efforts. Issues considered by any of the three groups were classified either as legislation or as a child-oriented issue. Advocacy techniques utilized to advance a group's position on a piece of legislation were paired with the bill. The effectiveness of the techniques was determined via a scale which examined a bill's progression through the legislative process. Patterns of effective advocacy were listed. Similarly, advocacy techniques employed to advance a group's position on child-oriented issues were paired with the issues. Patterns of advocacy were discerned from that information. As a result of the data analysis, the following conclusions were made; (a) a variety of techniques were used by the groups and contributed to effective advocacy; (b) the techniques of writing to and meeting with legislators or their staffs on behalf of a group were utilized most commonly in successful efforts related to legislation; (c) collaboration and multiple efforts were related to effective advocacy; (d) the professional association was most successful in its legislative advocacy efforts; and (e) the three groups took more positions and utilized more advocacy techniques on child-oriented issues than on legislation.

Abstract:
This study examines the news media's construction of protests. Previous research has found that the news media demonizes and marginalizes protests. Protesters are framed in a highly negative fashion and primarily categorized as "violent." This study employed focus groups, agenda setting and framing theories to analyze this phenomenon. Previous research has been primarily quantitative in nature and thus qualitative research will provide a more in-depth understanding of this phenomenon. This study supports the findings of prior research but offers new insights. The implications of this study suggests that the news media can influence what people think about and how they think about it. Additionally, the news media frame protesters in a negative manner. Protesters are framed as violent and deviant. This negative framing both helps and hurts the protesters' cause. Lastly, this study found the news media to maintain the status quo in this society

Abstract:
The primary objective of this research was to explore the impact of possible social factors on non-institutionalized adults 18 years of age or older residing in the United States who exhibited severe mental illness (SMI). A holistic sociological model was developed to explain SMI by incorporating elements of social learning theory, social disorganization theory, and gender socialization theory with social demographic factors. Based on the holistic sociological model, the following factors were investigated: demographic aspects of age, education, income and gender; gender socialization; influence of neighborhood area; social network influence based on communication and interaction among peers and family members; and socially deviant behaviors such as frequently smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and using drugs specifically marijuana. The impact of these factors on SMI was examined. A sample of 206 respondents drawn from National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2003 was assessed. These respondents had answered all the questions related to SMI; social deviant behaviors; neighborhood environment; and communications among peers, family members and friends; and the other studied factors. Ordinary linear regression with interaction terms was employed as a statistical tool to assess the impact of social determinants on SMI. Being female, living a disorganized neighborhood, and frequent and high levels of smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol had a significant influence on SMI. This reevaluation and reexamination of the role of gender socialization path, socially deviant behaviors like smoking and drinking, and community construction on SMI provided additional insights. This research is one of the first to develop a more holistic sociological model on SMI and explored the previously untested interactive relationships. The limitations of this study suggest the need to test a potential recursive research model and explore additional bi-directional associations.

Perkins, Jared David. "Friends of the State Courts: Organized Interests and State Courts of Last Resort." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc955125/.

Full text
Abstract:
Why do interest groups participate in state courts of last resort by filing amicus curiae briefs? Are they influential when they do? This dissertation examines these questions using an original survey of organized interests that routinely participate in state supreme courts, as well as data on all amicus curiae briefs and majority opinions in over 14,000 cases decided in all fifty-two state supreme courts for a four year period. I argue that interest groups turn to state judiciaries to achieve the dual goals of influencing policy and organizational maintenance, as amicus briefs can help organized interests achieve both outcomes. Furthermore, I contend that amicus briefs are influential in shaping judicial policy-making through the provision of legally persuasive arguments. The results suggest that interest groups do file amicus briefs to both lobby for their preferred policies and to support their organization's long-term viability. Additionally, the results indicate that organized interests also participate in counteractive lobbying in state courts of last resort by filing amicus briefs to ensure their side is represented and to dull the effect of oppositional amici. The findings also demonstrate support for the influence of amicus briefs on judicial policy-making on state high courts, as amicus briefs can influence the ideological direction of the court's majority opinions. Overall, this research extends our understanding of interest group lobbing in the judiciary and in state policy venues, and provides insight into judicial politics and policy-making on state courts of last resort.

Do, Ngoc Anh. "Numerical analyses of segmental tunnel lining under static and dynamic loads." Thesis, Lyon, INSA, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014ISAL0042/document.

Abstract:
This PhD thesis has the aim to study the behaviour of segmental tunnel lining by developing a new numerical approach to the Hyperstatic Reaction Method (HRM) and producing two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical models using the finite difference method (FDM). The study first deals with under static loads, and then performs under dynamic loads. Firstly, a literature review has been conducted. A new numerical approach applied to the HRM has then been developed. At the same time, a 2D numerical model is programmed regarding static loading conditions in order to evaluate the influence of the segmental joints, in terms of both joint distribution and joint stiffness characteristics, on the tunnel lining behaviour. After that, full 3D models of a single tunnel, twin horizontal tunnels and twin tunnels stacked over each other, excavated in close proximity in which the joint pattern is simulated, have been developed. These 3D models allow one to investigate the behaviour of not only the tunnel lining but also the displacement of the ground surrounding the tunnel during the tunnel excavation. A simplified 3D numerical model has then been produced in order to validate the new numerical approach applied to the HRM. In the last part of the manuscript, the performance of the segmental tunnel lining exposed to dynamic loading is taken into consideration through quasi-static and full dynamic analyses using 2D numerical models (FDM). A new HRM model has also been developed considering quasi-static loads. The differences of the tunnel behaviour under static and seismic loadings are highlighted

Abstract:
With her Book Club, talk show host Oprah Winfrey has used the relatively new technology of television to revive literature. Despite the odds against her--selecting hard-to-read, quirky books by generally unknown authors--Winfrey has successfully created women's spaces for the 1990s, not so different from the American women's social clubs from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the French salons of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This study will show how Oprah's Book Club allows readers, especially women, to use the psychological processes of transference and transactional reading by using fictional literature from the Book Club to discuss sensitive areas of their lives.

Abstract:
Background: Previous research has shown a high prevalence of psychosis in the prisoner population. The aim of this study was to examine feasibility of introducing an early detection service into a prison setting. It is the first study to examine prevalence and correlates of At Risk Mental State in a prison population, and to carry out a comparison between prisoners and a help seeking male community population. Hypothesis: We hypothesised that prisoners with an At Risk Mental State would have higher rates of i) social exclusion, ii) childhood adversity iii) substance misuse and iv) Black Ethnicity compared to prisoners without an at risk mental state and compared to their community counterparts. Method: A two stage procedure was used. New receptions meeting inclusion criteria were screened. Those that screened positive and 7% of those that screened negative underwent further assessment to establish they met criteria for being at high risk of psychosis. In addition, we collected data on socio-demographic variables, childhood adverse life events, alcohol and substance misuse, current criminal justice system information, and history of self harm and attempted suicide. The community sample was comprised of a subset of help seeking males who had sought help for mental health issues from various sources and were consequently assessed by the community early detection team. Results: Of 891 prisoners who were screened, 44% screened positive. We identified a prevalence of 5% at risk mental state and 3% first episode psychosis as well as a large proportion of prisoners with other mental disorder. The prison group did not differ greatly from the community group but did differ from the prison group that were negative at both screen and at second stage assessment. Conclusion: An at risk mental state service in a prison is both feasible and useful, in particular if the remit of identification is broadened to other mental disorder as well as the psychotic spectrum.

Sule, Suki Dauda. "An evaluation of the performance of multi-static handheld ground penetrating radar using full wave inversion for landmine detection." Thesis, University of Hull, 2018. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:16567.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an empirical study comparing the ability of multi-static and bi-static, handheld, ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems, using full wave inversion (FWI), to determine the properties of buried anti-personnel (AP) landmines. A major problem associated with humanitarian demining is the occurrence of many false positives during clearance operations. Therefore, a reduction of the false alarm rate (FAR) and/or increasing the probability of detection (POD) is a key research and technical objective. Sensor fusion has emerged as a technique that promises to significantly enhance landmine detection. This study considers a handheld, combined metal detector (MD) and GPR device, and quantifies the advantages of the use of antenna arrays. During demining operations with such systems, possible targets are detected using the MD and further categorised using the GPR, possibly excluding false positives. A system using FWI imaging techniques to estimate the subsurface parameters is considered in this work. A previous study of multi-static GPR FWI used simplistic, 2D far-field propagation models, despite the targets being 3D and within the near field. This novel study uses full 3D electromagnetic (EM) wave simulation of the antenna arrays and propagation through the air and ground. Full EM simulation allows the sensitivity of radio measurements to landmine characteristics to be determined. The number and configuration of antenna elements are very important and must be optimised, contrary to the 2D sensitivity studies in (Watson, Lionheart 2014, Watson 2016) which conclude that the degree (number of elements) of the multi-static system is not critical. A novel sensitivity analysis for tilted handheld GPR antennas is used to demonstrate the positive impact of tilted antenna orientation on detection performance. A time domain GPR and A-scan data, consistent with a commercial handheld system, the MINEHOUND, is used throughout the simulated experiments which are based on synthetic GPR measurements. Finally, this thesis introduces a novel method of optimising the FWI solution through feature extraction or estimation of the internal air void typically present in pressure activated mines, to distinguish mines from non-mine targets and reduce the incidence of false positives.

Kennedy, Mike. "Medical School Admissions Across Socioeconomic Groups: An Analysis Across Race Neutral and Race Sensitive Admissions Cycles." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc28440/.

Full text
Abstract:
While the relationship between academic variables and admission into medical school has been well documented, the relationship between socioeconomic background and admission has not been extensively examined. In 2001, the Texas Legislature passed HB 1641, which allowed for the use of socioeconomic variables in the admission of graduate and professional school students. Additionally, the Grutter v. Bollinger decision in 2003 removed a prohibition on the use of race or ethnicity in the admission of students in the state of Texas. The study examined the role medical school admissions selectivity as it relates to the socioeconomic background during a race neutral admissions cycle in 2005 and a race sensitive admissions cycle in 2006. The results of data analysis found that in a race neutral admissions cycle socioeconomic background was a significant factor in the admission of applicants to medical school. However, it was not a significant factor for applicants from underrepresented minority groups. The analysis also found that socioeconomic background was a significant factor in the admission of applicants to medical school in a race sensitive admissions cycle as well. Finally, the study found that variances in selectivity led to differences in the socioeconomic makeup of entering students across different medical schools. From the data analyzed in this study, it can be argued admission to medical school is in agreement with the sociological literature in that parental socioeconomic status is positively related to academic opportunities for their offspring.

Abstract:
Despite the growing prominence of ‘international contact groups’ in the field of peacemaking, there is little academic attention for such ad hoc informal negotiating groups of third-party states. This study seeks to contribute to this understudied topic by investigating under what conditions contact groups are most likely to achieve negotiation success. Based on the framework of ‘recognition theory’, I argue that respect for each member as equal partner of the negotiating group helps to prevent obstructive behaviour. It is therefore hypothesised that ‘recognition for all members of the contact group enhances the likelihood of reaching agreement on a peacemaking strategy’. This is tested by means of a structured focused comparison in a most-similar cases design, studying two contact groups that operated during the 1999 conflict in Kosovo. I subsequently probe the generalisability of my findings by extending the analysis with a third case of contact group negotiations on Syria in 2012. The empirical findings provide support for the hypothesis and hint at the theory’s relevance in today’s context of increasingly dispersed power and mediation leverage. Nevertheless, further research is needed to establish with greater validity and reliability the effect of recognition and how it relates to other conditions for success.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to develop a test method which will consider the variation of the ground clearance when driving, the so-called dynamic ground clearance. This has been done through the analysis of a specific application: the tractors in grain used in Brazil. Series of real life tests are run in order to obtain data on the tire compressions and the suspension travels. The tractor used is a 6x4 and is loaded with a trailer. When investigating critical cases, the minimum dynamic ground clearance is found to be as small as 123 mm at the axle 1, 78 mm at the exhaust outlet, 137 mm at the fuel tank, 35 mm at the bumper and 213 mm at the axle 2. These data will be transmitted to the engineer responsible for the chassis design in order for him to get a better understanding of the motion of the truck relative to ground.

Abstract:
This study investigates the phenomenon of ethnic interest groups as domestic sources of influence on the making of foreign policy on a cross-national basis. The attempt is made first to develop a framework for comparing theoretically the role of ethnic groups in various governmental systems. Once completed, the various conceptual assumptions are applied to the activities of domestic ethnic interest groups in the United States and Canada concerned with policy for the Middle East and the Arab-Israel conflict. The focus is primarily on the American and Canadian pro-Israel lobbies during the period between October 1973 and September 1982. Data for domestic Arab ethnic constituencies are also considered where relevant, but more as logical counter-points to the North American Jewish communities than as bases for full and complete cross-ethnic comparison. The principal objective of this study is to compare the political influence of two interest groups of the same faith and fundamental purpose but of different systems of government and political cultures.

Abstract:
Problem--The development of diabetes produces a state of shock for the child and his or her family. The single most important factor in coping with both the physical and emotional impact of diabetes is education. Only when there is a clear understanding on the part of the child and the family of what diabetes is, how it can be managed, how to prevent emergencies, and how to cope with complications should they arise, will these feelings begin to be resolved. There are very limited educational materials available to help the pre-school to elementary age children with diabetes understand their disease.Main Procedure--A support group for families who have children with diabetes was developed. The objectives were formulated in relationship to the needs of the support group. The following materials were created to help the children understand about their disease:1. A flannelboard explanation of diabetes was used to help the children understand diabetes.2. A green puppet to sing and talk to the children about the problems of being different and how to say no without calling attention to oneself was created.3. A homemade robot was made that could turn a negative message into a positive one. A discussion of what's good about today and the importance of having a positive attitude followed.4. A game called Diabetes Challenge was created. The game called for the recognition of foods and their exchange areas and also asked challenging questions about diabetes.5. Containers from three fast-food restaurants were used with food exchanges marked on them so children could select wisest choices for their meal plan.6. Marionettes and stick puppets were created to perform the puppet show "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" and then the sequel "The Girl 'Who Cried Reaction". The sequel was written by the researcher in an attempt to illustrate the importance of being believed.7. A school booklet was developed for families to inform their schools about diabetes.8. A video tape was created to be used by parents to inform their school about diabetes.Understanding diabetes and learning to care for it well is an ongoing task. Diabetes in a child is a way of life. It involves the whole family and all those outside the family that are caring for the child. It is the writer's hope that this project will be utilized as a resource for presenting important information to children who have diabetes. TRAMONTO, FILIPPO. "MICROSCOPIC STUDIES OF STATIC AND DYNAMIC PROPERTIES IN QUANTUM LIQUIDS AND GASES." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/260418.

Abstract:
In this thesis I present studies of a number of quantum many-body Bose systems via Quantum Monte Carlo methods. We investigated the dynamic structure factor of a hard-sphere Bose system simulated at T=0 at different densities, from the dilute to the strongly interacting regimes. By increasing the density we observed the spectrum evolves from the weakly interacting Bogoliubov to a phonon-maxon-roton dispersion, but also the emergence of a broad multi-quasiparticle component. For a system with sphere radius and density corresponding to superfluid 4He at equilibrium, we found good agreement with the spectrum in the roton region. In another work, a liquid of distinguishable 4He atoms near freezing at T=1 K was studied to compute the equation of state and static density response function. The results of this study have been used to improve the description of the superfluid-to-solid transition within the Density Functional Theory. Measurements of crystallization kinetics in supercooled liquid p-H2--o-D2 mixtures showed a slowdown with respect to the pure counterparts. In order to contribute to the interpretation of these results we simulated these metastable mixtures. We found differences in the quantum delocalization of the two isotopic molecules, which result in different effective sizes. We characterized also the differences in the local order around the molecules of each species. These results revealed that the observed slowdown is due to purely quantum effects. Finally, in a QMC study of ion Ar+ doped 4He nanodroplets at T=1 K, we computed density profiles, energies, and investigated local order around the Ar+ ion. We found stable solid structures around the ion composed of three solvation shells having the shape of platonic solids: an icosahedron, a dodecahedron, and, again, an icosahedron, with 12, 20, and 12 4He atoms, going from the inner to the outer shell respectively. These results confirmed the interpretation of experimental measurements of the abundances of Ar+@4He nanodroplets.

Howard, Lesley. "Membership representation in the issue-focus selection process of national environmental nonprofit organizations." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42067.

Full text
Abstract:
Public interest groups, environmental nonprofit organizations (ENPOs) among them, play a large role in the formulation and implementation of public policy. Much of their legitimacy comes from their claim that they represent their members' interests. This thesis examines ENPO communication forms to ascertain whether and how ENPOs seek their members' opinions, and if so, whether or not those opinions influence the ENPOs' issue-focus selection process, which is the issues on which the ENPO's financial and human resources will be expended.

The research addresses these questions at two related levels of representation: internal to the organization (e. g., how do ENPOs seek their members' opinions) and inter - organizational (e.g., what role do ENPOs play in the political arena). On the level of internal democracy, elitist theory and Seymour Martin Lipset's "factors that encourage organizational democracy" provide a base for interpreting the results. At the inter-organizational level both pluralist and elitist theories of democratic governance provide the base for interpretation of the results. Finally, speculation is made about ENPO membership as "symbolic" political participation

The results suggest that support for both pluralist and elitist interpretation of both internal and inter-organizational democracy may be appropriate. All ENPOs use a variety of communication forms to inform their members, and all ENPO survey respondents stated that they are open to membership suggestions. The findings also suggest that another appropriate interpretation of ENPO membership may be that membership is a symbolic purchase of political participation.

Schwarzenberger, Fabian. "The Integrated Density of States for Operators on Groups." Universitätsbibliothek Chemnitz, 2014. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:ch1-qucosa-138523.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is devoted to the study of operators on discrete structures. The operators are supposed to be self-adjoint and obey a certain translation invariance property. The discrete structures are given as Cayley graphs via finitely generated groups. Here, sofic groups and amenable groups are in the center of our considerations. Note that every finitely generated amenable group is sofic. We investigate the spectrum of a discrete self-adjoint operator by studying a sequence of finite dimensional analogues of these operators. In the setting of amenable groups we obtain these approximating operators by restricting the operator in question to finite subsets Qn , n ∈ N. These finite dimensional operators are self-adjoint and therefore admit a well-defined normalized eigenvalue counting function. The limit of the normalized eigenvalue counting functions when |Qn | → ∞ (if it exists) is called the integrated density of states (IDS). It is a distribution function of a probability measure encoding the distribution of the spectrum of the operator in question on the real axis. We prove the existence of the IDS in various geometric settings and for different types of operators. The models we consider include deterministic as well as random situations. Depending on the specific setting, we prove existence of the IDS as a weak limit of distribution functions or even as a uniform limit. Moreover, in certain situations we are able to express the IDS via a semi-explicit formula using the trace of the spectral projection of the original operator. This is sometimes referred to as the validity of the Pastur-Shubin trace formula. In the most general geometric setting we study, the operators are defined on Cayley graphs of sofic groups. Here we prove weak convergence of the eigenvalue counting functions and verify the validity of the Pastur-Shubin trace formula for random and non-random operators . These results apply to operators which not necessarily bounded or of finite hopping range. The methods are based on resolvent techniques. This theory is established without having an ergodic theorem for sofic groups at hand. Note that ergodic theory is the usual tool used in the proof of convergence results of this type. Specifying to operators on amenable groups we are able to prove stronger results. In the discrete case, we show that the IDS exists uniformly for a certain class of finite hopping range operators. This is obtained by using a Banach space-valued ergodic theorem. We show that this applies to eigenvalue counting functions, which implies their convergence with respect to the Banach space norm, in this case the supremum norm. Thus, the heart of this theory is the verification of the Banach space-valued ergodic theorem. Proceeding in two steps we first prove this result for so-called ST-amenable groups. Then, using results from the theory of ε-quasi tilings, we prove a version of the Banach space-valued ergodic theorem which is valid for all amenable groups. Focusing on random operators on amenable groups, we prove uniform existence of the IDS without the assumption that the operator needs to be of finite hopping range or bounded. Moreover, we verify the Pastur-Shubin trace formula. Here we present different techniques. First we show uniform convergence of the normalized eigenvalue counting functions adapting the technique of the Banach space-valued ergodic theorem from the deterministic setting. In a second approach we use weak convergence of the eigenvalue counting functions and additionally obtain control over the convergence at the jumps of the IDS. These ingredients are applied to verify uniform existence of the IDS. In both situations we employ results from the theory of large deviations, in order to deal with long-range interactions.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we will focus on a very general family of variational wave-functions, whose main peculiarity is that their descriptors/parameters are tailored according to simple linear algebraic relations. The computational power and success of these tools descends from arguments that were born within quantum information framework: entanglement [1]. Quantum entanglement is indeed a resource, but it is also a measure of internal correlations in multipartite systems. Once we characterized general entanglement properties of many-body ground states, then by controlling entanglement of a variational trial wavefunction we can exclusively address physical states, and disregard non-physical states, even before the simulation takes place. This is the central concept which Tensor Network architectures are based upon.

Abstract:
There has been increasing research interest in recent years in using the power of computers to support group work. There have been two main areas of research: experimental research into GDSS supported group work in laboratory settings, and research designed to develop GDSSs which are effective, efficient and acceptable to their users. However, there have been some contradictory findings from these two areas of research. The developmental effort has shown great promise in relatively controlled developmental settings. At the same time, experimental research has indicated that GDSSs may not provide the hoped for increases in effectiveness and efficiency while being accepted by their users. This study has attempted to clarify this situation by using a field study to assess the implementation of a GDSS in an operational environment. The setting for this study was a large engineering and manufacturing site of a large electronics company. A GDSS which had been developed at the University of Arizona was installed at the host company's site, and it was assessed for the first nine months of its use. Results indicate that the system was perceived to be effective, efficient and acceptable for use by its intended users.
