Abstract:
In the present essay, I review and evaluate the three main hypotheses about the historical background and emergence of the nonsense syllables in the chant tradition of teretismata and kratēmata in Byzantine music. The different historical hypotheses as to the historical roots and development of this singing practice are examined and analyzed thoroughly, namely those of Gregorios Stathis (1979, 2014), Diane Touliatos (1989), and Grigorios Anastasiou (2005). The aim of the analysis is to summarise and discuss the contribution of the up-to-date historical hypotheses to the theoretical approaches of the topic, including the identification of potential flaws, lacunae and inadequacies of their explanatory power. Touliatos takes antiquity as a starting point for her hypothesis and posits the roots of nonsense syllables in the music of Ancient Greece. After a historical gap of several centuries, those syllables reappear in the Byzantine music during the 14th c. Stathis and Anastasiou examine the phenomenon exclusively within the boundaries of Byzantine music. Before reviewing the three hypotheses concerning the historical development of nonsense syllables in Byzantine music, we must consider the sources on which the theories are postulated.

Full text
Abstract:
Why do small states contribute to great power led wars even though they lack the capabilities to determine the success of the war and there are no clear interests to gain? The peaceable states of the Nordic countries could have opted for a free-riding strategy instead of being active participants. Still, the Nordic countries were in relation to their size, some of the top military contributors in Afghanistan. In recent small state literature, it has been suggested that small states use military contributions as means to increase their international status position. There are however two competing and sometimes overlapping arguments of whether status is a means for increasing political influence or securing protection. This thesis contributes to this literature by differentiating the concept of status in two categories - influence and security. This distinction enabled a cross case comparative congruence test which reveals that the Nordic states had different status motivations in their decision to contribute to the Afghanistan war. Denmark and Sweden had a clear preference of seeking status seeking as means for influence while Norway used status mainly as means for enhancing security. This thesis shows that small states are not only dependent security consumers. It suggests that the decision-making processes in the small states were guided by independent preferences of enhancing status, which ultimately transformed into military contributions. However, rather than considering status as the main objective, the potential gains of enhancing the status position were the central ambition. The Nordic states’ preferences of status gains differed more than what previous research has suggested.

Full text
Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of the thesis is to identify principles of valuation and to reach a solution for how Statens järnvägar can present their leased railroad vehicles in the future.

Methodology: The authors have done a case study through a qualitative approach. Interviews have been done with Statens järnvägar, Näringsdepartementet and Riksrevisionen. Annual reports from Banverket and Luftfartsverket have been studied.

Theoretical perspectives: The regulations that rule the authorities are a base for the study.

Earlier researches done within the subject are presented in this section.

Empirical foundation: The empirical foundation of this study consists of primary- and secondary data. The primary data is collected from the interviews that have been done, whilst the secondary data is composed of annual reports, regulations and various other documents.

Conclusions: The authors have come to the conclusion that the method of valuation that Statens järnvägar choose, depends a lot on the vehicles hypothetical future. It is difficult to say that only one of the methods would be the correct one.

Joseph, Matthew Richard. "Resisting the Statist Quo: A Philosophical Critique of the State’s Right to Exclude." Thesis, University of Sydney, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/23134.

Full text
Abstract:
The standard view in political philosophy is that nation-states have the right to exclude unwanted would-be immigrants. This view is grounded in the value of membership in a political association expressing the will of a people with a shared national or political identity; that is, citizenship. Because citizens see themselves as co-members of a just political society, they have a morally justified collective authority to exclude non-members. This is puzzling though. Individual freedom is normatively the orienting moral value in liberal political reasoning, and political philosophers are ordinarily suspicious of claims that some agents can do things to other agents that interferes with their liberty. Given that exclusion entails doing things to people and interfering with their liberty, the right to exclude warrants close philosophical scrutiny. In this dissertation I ask who has the right to exclude whom from what, why and how? I begin by separating how states exclude into three categories – omission, denial, and force – and argue that none of these methods are compatible with core liberal values. Next I show that self-determination does not provide a justification for why states can exclude, because states can be self-determining even if they do not have the right to exclude. I then turn to what people are excluded from and argue that if we take human rights seriously, then there is a plausible human right to immigrate that states are obliged to observe. To address whom states may exclude, I defend a cosmopolitan account of universal moral equality against narrower conceptions of national and political memberships. Ultimately, according to my argument, because exclusion relies on liberal states acting in ways incompatible with their normative foundations; is not required to realise self-determination; conflicts with the state’s human rights duties; and violates the presumed moral equality of all human beings; there are no states with a normative right to exclude.

Fincher, Cynthia Ellen. "Mental Status, Intellectual, and Mood States Associated with Environmental Illness Patients." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1991. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500843/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the present study was to begin development of a psychological profile for environmentally ill patients. Existing psychiatric labels are unable to encompass these patients. Test scores were drawn from a pool of 89 patients whose environmental exposures were verified by the presence of toxins in the blood serum. A Mental Status Exam, a Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised screen, and the Profile of Mood States were administered. Results indicate a primary pattern which is significantly different from test norms consisting of fatigue, reduced mental functioning, and a lack of psychotic or personality disorder indicators. The reported symptoms of environmentally ill patients were objectively verified by current psychological test instruments. The need for a new diagnostic category for people who have been poisoned by environmental toxins is discussed.

Abstract:
Wall shear stress and statin drugs have both been shown to influence endothelial cell function. We investigated the effect of statins on the morphology and F-actin cytoskeleton arrangement of endothelial cells with and without wall shear stress. Under static conditions, statins caused cells to become rounded and disorganized the F-actin cytoskeleton. Wall shear stress abrogated the morphological effects, but did not reverse the cytoskeleton disorganization.

Abstract:
Although originally designed as inhibitors of cholesterol biosynthesis, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors, or statins, are now known to also have non-lipid lowering benefits [1]. Statins have been reported to modulate gene expression in endothelial cells, however, the effect of statins on adhesion molecule expression is contradictory. Some studies report a decrease in adhesion molecule mRNA and/or protein after statin treatment [2], while others have shown that statins potentiate the effect of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) [3]. To the best of our knowledge, the effects of statins on gene expression in cultured endothelial cells has been done in static conditions only and no study has examined the effect of blood flow. This is particularly important since fluid shear stress is a strong regulator of endothelial cell function and phenotype [4]. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of statins on vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expression in endothelial cells by evaluating their biological response under fluid flow.
