Abstract:
Smectitic clay minerals are frequently identified in mangrove soils, but there is little information about their types and origins. Besides their importance in the agronomical and geotechnical areas, smectites play an important environmental role by adsorbing nutrients, organic pollutants and heavy metals. Smectites found in mangrove soils can be of marine or continental detrital origin, or of neoformation origin. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the types of smectites present in the State of São Paulo mangrove soils (Brazil), and to relate them to their possible origins. Soil samples were taken in five mangroves along the State of Sao Paulo State coast line. The mineral composition of the clay fraction was identified by X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) applying the Greene-Kelly test and by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Highlighting the peaks in the 3,560 cm-1 band and in the region near 798 and 820 cm-1, there was a predominance of nontronite in the soil at the Sítio Grande River, Pai Matos Island, Caranguejo Island and Itapanhaú River mangroves, and possibly a lower concentration of ferric montmorillonite in the Escuro River mangrove. Since the continental sediments in these environments are very poor in smectite, the origin of these minerals in the mangrove soils studied is related to sedimentation left by past marine transgressions, to neoformation processes, or yet to a combination of both origins.

Abstract:
Abstract The abundance of classical literature and the conventions of historical studies have shaped the archaeological exploration of the origin of the state in China, starting with and centering on the identification of specific dynasties. The linear evolutionary account of the Chinese civilization, based on royal genealogies, has become mainstream. The emergence of the state has been continuously dated earlier. I argue that theoretical flaws, nationalism, and disciplinary limits have obscured the complexities of this research project. Drawing on archaeological findings, I propose a two-stage model regarding the origin of the state in East Asia.

Abstract:
Replication origins in eukaryotic cells never fire more than once in a given S phase. Here, we summarize the role of cyclin–dependent kinases in limiting DNA replication origin usage to once per cell cycle in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae . We have examined the role of different cyclins in the phosphorylation and regulation of several replication/regulatory factors including Cdc6, Sic1, ORC and DNA polymerase α–primase. In addition to being regulated by the cell cycle machinery, replication origins are also regulated by the genome integrity checkpoint kinases, Mec1 and Rad53. In response to DNA damage or drugs which interfere with the progression of replication forks, the activation of late–firing replication origins is inhibited. There is evidence indicating that the temporal programme of origin firing depends upon the local histone acetylation state. We have attempted to test the possibility that checkpoint regulation of late–origin firing operates through the regulation of the acetylation state. We found that overexpression of the essential histone acetylase, Esa1, cannot override checkpoint regulation of origin firing. We have also constructed a temperature–sensitive esa1 mutant. This mutant is unable to resume cell cycle progression after α–factor arrest. This can be overcome by overexpression of the G1 cyclin, Cln2, revealing a novel role for Esa1 in regulating Start.

Full text
Abstract:
A bond graph procedure to get the steady state value for linear time-invariant systems is presented. The general case of a singular state matrix is considered. The procedure is based on a junction structure configuration with derivative causality assignment, and on relationships of the bond graphs with integral and derivative causality assignments. It is shown that the structurally null modes, i.e. the poles at the origin, are cancelled for steady state. The key to cancel the poles at the origin is that the adjugate matrix of sIn − Ap multiplies Bp yielding the zeros at the origin with the same order that the structurally null modes, where ( Ap, Bp, Cp, Dp) is a state space realization of a linear time-invariant system, s is the Laplace operator and In, is an n × n identity matrix. Hence, this unstable part of the system is cancelled and the steady state can be obtained. Thus, the singularity of the state space matrix is avoided, and the steady state is obtained from the bond graph with derivative causality assignment. Since the singular state matrix is considered, it is shown that by using the bond graph with derivative causality assignment, an equivalent system with linearly independent state variables can be obtained. An example of an electrical system with an electrical transformer modelled by an I-field whose state matrix is singular is presented. Also, the proposed methodology for a load driven by two DC motors is applied.

Abstract:
Thailand is a non-Western country where a firm state ideology based on national political traditions has been developed to counter the influx of Western liberalism. The official state ideology is clearly set forth in Article 45 of the present constitution, which states that “No person shall exercise his constitutional rights and liberties in a manner adversely affecting the Nation, Religion, King and Constitution.” That is to say, every Thai must be loyal to these four institutions. Moreover, the government maintains a steady output of pamphlets and other publications to imbue this ideology into the minds of the Thai people. “Nation” in this ideology is closely associated with “Religion” and “King”, both of which are fundamental elements in the traditional Thai Buddhist theory of kingship. According to this theory, the king, regarded as elected by a gathering of all the people, should reign justly as a protector on whom the people can rely, and should be guided by the restraints of the moral law of Buddhism. Accordingly, the concept of “nation” in this ideology is different from that in Western liberal nationalism.

Abstract:
AbstractThe principal succession of transformations of a prebiotic microsystem leading to its transition into the primary living state is theoretically substantiated. For the first stage of the succession, a significant change in the external conditions constrains an organic microsystem to leave the current stable state with the following transition into a new stable state through the unstable critical (bifurcation) point. At the bifurcation point the microsystem acquires the original properties without which life cannot exist (self-maintaining heterogeneous structure, incessant fluctuations and rearrangement of molecules, exchange with the surroundings by matter and energy, etc.). During the second stage its unstable state stabilizes relatively by means of the balanced oscillations around the bifurcation point (the paradoxical state of ‘stabilized instability’ appears). The third stage is characterized with the radical turn in the network of chemical reactions: the free energy contribution begins to prevail over the entropy contribution. As a result, constructive transformations proceed faster than destructive transformations. At this stage the key properties of biological organization appear: the ability to concentrate free energy and information, intensified counteraction to external influences, expedient behaviour and persistent self-renovation. On the early Earth, such successive transformation of organic matter occurred in the changeable conditions of a hydrothermal medium. Some new methods for experimental and theoretical research in the origin of life field are suggested.

AbstractA theory of conceptual development must specify the innate representational primitives, must characterize the ways in which the initial state differs from the adult state, and must characterize the processes through which one is transformed into the other. The Origin of Concepts (henceforth TOOC) defends three theses. With respect to the initial state, the innate stock of primitives is not limited to sensory, perceptual, or sensorimotor representations; rather, there are also innate conceptual representations. With respect to developmental change, conceptual development consists of episodes of qualitative change, resulting in systems of representation that are more powerful than, and sometimes incommensurable with, those from which they are built. With respect to a learning mechanism that achieves conceptual discontinuity, I offer Quinian bootstrapping. TOOC concludes with a discussion of how an understanding of conceptual development constrains a theory of concepts.

The Mexican nation was built by the state. This construction involved the formulation and dissemination of a national identity to forge a community that shares common culture and social cohesion. The focus of the article is to analyze the myth of the origin of the nation, mestizaje, as this is a long-lasting formula of national integration. After more than a century of mestizaje, real or fictitious, Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples have begun to question the capability of this common origin since it invalidates the origins of many other ethnic communities, especially in the current phase of the nation state, which refers to the recognition of cultural diversity. The myth is propagated by official means and is highly perceived by society, due to its high symbolic content that is well reflected in popular pictorial representations. The final part of the article will refer to the mestizo myth in the imagination of some Indigenous intellectuals and students, who hold their own ethnic myths of foundation or origin.

Abstract:
The issue of disclosing the historical foundations of state formation and development constantly needs attention from domestic researchers, which is the purpose of this article. The article is devoted to explaining the historical foundations of state formation and development. The basic theories of the origin of the state, including patriarchal, theological, contractual, organic, theory of violence and materialistic (class) theory, are presented. Based on the analysis of all theories of the origin of the state, it becomes clear that the emergence and development of the state are based on human needs, and its main purpose as a socio-political institute and public administration as an activity is precisely to meet the needs of people. It is found that common to all theories of the origin of the state is that they all recognize the existence of a powerful, organizing power, only different in origin: parental, divine, contractual, organic, violent, power of private property. The main purpose of the state, as a socio-political institute and public administration as an activity that is precisely to meet people's needs, is outlined. The class and general social nature of the state are revealed. The article describes the theory of "stages of economic growth" by Rostow, according to which it can be argued that at the present stage of development, Ukraine is at the third stage of a society that is undergoing a process of shifts and will become a maturing society in the future. The main features of the state as the central institute of the political system are given. It is established that the concept of "state" should be understood as a sovereign political organization that officially represents and covers all the population within a certain territory, has its own tax and monetary system, national legislation, official symbols and has a special apparatus of management and coercion.

Abstract:
In his article “Creating the National War Labor Board: Franklin Roosevelt and the Politics of State Building in the Early 1940s,” Andrew Workman argues for a revised “institutionalist” understanding of the creation of the National War Labor Board (NWLB). Specifically, Workman includes interest groups, networks of policy intellectuals, and intragovernmental relations in an institutionalist account of the origin of the NWLB. Existing accounts that focus on the government's dependence on labor unions (Sparrow) or partisan politics (Katznelson and Pietrokowski; Katznelson, Geiger, and Kryder) do not explain the complex origins of this key wartime board.
