Abstract:
Start-up defined as a transitional state during which an individual or a group of individuals in need of resources and under conditions of high uncertainty are looking for a scalable business model and must face many challenges. Collaborations with mature companies appear to be a catalyst for the development of these young innovative companies. Supporting for the majority of them by incubators, this thesis proposes to dive into the practices of these structures with the entrepreneurs followed on the subject of collaboration. First, and through an empirical methodology based on a case study, we show that collaborations impact start-ups by driving significant business model changes throughout their development. Once this observation has been established, our second empirical study on a population of incubators in France shows that there is no general trend in support practices on the subject of collaboration. At the same time, it is clear that within the structures themselves, each practice is dependent on the support person. Thus, each of the structures is characterized by an absence of harmony between the different practices. Our results first highlight the impacts that collaborations can have on the development of the start-up through the changes in the Business Model they generate. In a second step, our study allows us to better understand the different support practices implemented by incubators and to propose recommendations for the managers of support structures

Abstract:
The main objective of the thesis is to use several managerial tools in order to plan how to start a private Moroccan-Czech business in the Czech Republic. In order to achieve this goal, the main objective was subdivided in a set of partial goals. To start a business includes firstly to have an idea and to consider its viability through a feasibility study before planning its execution. Secondly, to support the startup process from the procedural point of view, it is reasonable to use project management since it revealed processes that are common to any project lifecycle: initiation, planning, execution, control and closure. The application of these processes helps to create a structured action plan. In order to answer all questions, the thesis is divided in three steps. In the first one, project management is explained as well as its concepts and processes and application method. The second step describes the methodology of a startup business; and the third step is the achievement of the constructed methodology in a real business planning, that is monitored and evaluated continuously. The result of the thesis is a business idea verified as viable through a feasibility study. Then a business plan is prepared in order to detail the opportunity, strategy and financial expectations; this document is a key to find investors, funding or associates and should consider potential risks and how to avoid or solve them. When the financial and material requirements are met, the legal and administrative procedures as well as the company installation can start. The thesis also includes a time schedule and budget to every activity which have to be respected and continuously controlled during the business operation executing. However, some risks may appear during the project, and a good preparation and planning means keeping in mind the project's achievement.

Abstract:
In today’s dynamic business environment, stakeholders are seen as essential and companies are expected to engage stakeholders in mutually productive areas such as innovation and product development, market and sales development, sustainability, etc. However, prior literature of stakeholder engagement has mainly focused on large companies and the benefits of stakeholder engagement are usually narrowed to one specific area of growth. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the micro level of start-up companies and examines benefits of stakeholder engagement in terms of different aspects of company growth (namely financial performance, product development and innovation, marketing/sales development, reputation, sustainability and CSR, knowledge learning and information.).   Literature review of concepts of stakeholder engagement, start-ups and company growth has led to the theoretical framework of the thesis. It serves as guidance for the overall methodology. In order to meet the research objectives, we conduct a qualitative exploratory study on eight Swedish start-ups from different industries and with different characteristics. The data collection technique we use is semi-structured interviews with the eight owners (CEOs) of the start-ups. Through the interviews we examined the stakeholders that start-up companies are engaging, the benefits of engaging different stakeholders, the costs which may prevent them from engagement and the relationships between stakeholder engagement and their company growth.   The thesis has found that start-ups do engage different stakeholders for various growth aspects, and identified major focus areas and main stakeholders that start-ups attach more importance to than others. Customers and suppliers are frequently mentioned for driving product, market and sales development, which leads to direct financial growth. Owner-managers, employees and investors are in the second group of growth drivers, while the third group includes personal network, government organizations and communities. Meanwhile, the thesis has also categorized the benefits of stakeholder engagement into two groups according to the relative importance found out. Market and sales development, innovation and product development and financial performance are the primary, more frequently mentioned benefits than sustainability/CSR, Knowledge Learning/Information and reputation. Thus, the thesis has extended the theoretical framework by fitting it to the start-up context. The thesis has contributed to prior literature by reinforcing the prior research on stakeholder engagement and also filling the research gap in micro start-up company context. The thesis can give practical implications to start-up companies in terms of how to engagement stakeholders to drive company growth. We could conclude that start-up company context carries certain difference from large companies in stakeholder engagement, and start-ups should be encouraged to engage stakeholders more to drive company growth.

Karlsson, Rikard. "Hybrid start up/shut down vibrations." Thesis, KTH, Farkost och flyg, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-39688.

Full text
Abstract:
A vehicle start/stop engine system is investigated with focus on human perception of discomfort. The FRF between engine rotational acceleration around the neutral torque axis (NTA) and seat rail acceleration with the specific interest in start up and shut down events is estimated from measurements, using a shaker torque excitation. The inverted torque sensitivity formulates a frequency dependent target of powertrain torque related to seat rail acceleration. The main rotation direction for the transversally mounted engine is the pitch-direction, yielding high acceleration levels in both longitudinal x-, and vertical z-direction compared to the lateral y-direction. Specific weighting functions are used to normalize these accelerations to human perception. Acceleration levels in x-, and z-direction at the seat rail are similar after weighting curves have been applied. The amount of discomfort experienced by a person depends on vibration amplitude, frequency, direction and time duration. However, there is no evidence on in what way a specific time dependence affects the perceived comfort. The NTA around which the engine as a rigid body rotates is experimentally estimated and verified by comparing to the reference CAD NTA. The powertrain mounting system center of gravity is assumed to be known from the CAD model. The seat rail is found to be a more convenient measurement position to use in order to achieve reproducible results rather than the seat cushion. This, since the acceleration at the cushion also depends on several other factors such as person size, weight and body posture and also on the non-linear properties of the seat foam padding.

Abstract:
Operations strategy (OS) formation in very small and new start-up organizations is a topic that until now, has not been paid much attention by OS scholars. Current OS literature in this area has been generated from studies that have been carried out mainly upon large and well established corporations. In this regard, an action research intervention to investigate how OS is formed in a very small and new start-up firm has been successfully deployed. This research has found a mismatch between what is currently described in current OS formation literature and what actually happens in the very small and new start-up firm in practice. The OS formation observed in this research was a very dynamic process where all four OS perspectives met; bottom-up, top-down, market requirements and resource based perspectives. However, this process was mainly influenced by a resource-based process driven by the emergent effects generated by the effective deployment of the firm's indirect capabilities. The indirect capabilities of this firm turned to be, at the simplest level, the ability that the firm 's founder-manager had for creating a strategic network of external business collaborators and gaining access to their resources and capabilities to foster the development of her firm 's OS. At a more complex level, they turned to be the dynamic ability that the founder-manager had for finding new scenarios to deploy those already accessed resources and capabilities, and managing and influencing them in a way that they would keep providing further access to further external resources and capabilities to foster her firm's OS development. A guideline to help founder-managers with very limited financial resources to foster the development of their firms ' OS formation process is offered.

Abstract:

Abstract:
International entrepreneurship is a prominent phenomenon in contemporary research, because of the ease of internationalisation for companies. Start-up hubs in Europe are booming and especially web-based tech companies internationalise quickly. This new type of company, which internationalises almost immediately after foundation, is called born global. Research showed that despite the interest in born global tech start-ups, there is no representative model visualising the process of their internationalisation. Therefore, secondary research is conducted, as well as empirical research in the form of qualitative interviews with three representative, successfully internationalised tech start-ups from Europe. These companies are the music streaming service Spotify, social marketing SaaS Facelift and business management SaaS Ivy. The internationalisation factors resulting from this research can be divided into a preparation phase, possible strategy development and an implementation phase. Within these phases, factors are separated into company- internal and external influences. Based on these findings, a new model on the internationalisation process of web- based tech start-ups is developed.

Abstract:
When I was thinking about my final dissertation I was at the beginning of a start-up project, with a friend of mine, we were thinking about how we could leave an imprinting on nowadays world. Thanks to different perspectives and point of views we have merged different ideas to create what is now called DreamsDiary. We foster the sharing of emotions and dreams, we are building a platform in which all the dreamers around the world could land and share their dreams. From little ones, like going to that concert; to bigger ones, like having that back-pack trip in India you have always dreamt about. Our users have just to decide if the sharing process has to be exclusively on the platform with the common actions of all the social networks or if it has to be logistically implemented: travelling together. Considering this brief introduction and the massive work we have done in the occasion of our market and competition analysis and now, during the funds seeking and launch operations I’ve decided to analyse and summarise all the most important drivers when you are considering how to spread innovations across the digital world. Different models from the past to nowadays american blogs and books about digital entrepreneurship have been considered. Studying different web startups for my business I was stuck with one idea: there have to be some leading drivers and success factors that can predict the diffusion of one innovation or idea. I’ve prepared this essay to help myself on having a better approach on the market and the start-up world considering the forthcoming launch of my idea. Helping digital entrepreneurs to better seed, study and analyse these factors so crucial considering the start-up will be the ultimate goal I’ve imagined with these pages.

Abstract:

Liu, Kuangyi. "Start-up manufacturing firms : operations for survival." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5929.

Full text
Abstract:
Start-up firms play an important role in the economy. Statistics show that a large percent of start-up firms fail after few years of establishment. Raising capital, which is crucial to success, is one of the difficulties start-up firms face. This Ph. D thesis aims to draw suggestions for start-up firm survival from mathematical models and numerical investigations. Instead of the commonly held profi t maximizing objective, this thesis assumes that a start-up firm aims to maximize its survival probability during the planning horizon. A firm fails if it runs out of capital at a solvency check. Inventory management in manufacturing start-up firms is discussed further with mathematical theories and numerical illustrations, to gain insight of the policies for start-up firms. These models consider specific inventory problems with total lost sales, partial backorders and joint inventory-advertising decisions. The models consider general cost functions and stochastic demand, with both lead time zero and one cases. The research in this thesis provides quantitative analysis on start-up firm survival, which is new to the literature. From the results, a threshold exists on the initial capital requirement to start-up firms, above which the increase of capital has little effect on survival probability. Start-up firms are often risk-averse and cautious about spending. Entering the right niche market increases their chance of survival, where the demand is more predictable, and start-ups can obtain higher backorder rates and product price. Sensitivity tests show that selling price, purchasing price and overhead cost have the most impact on survival probability. Lead time has a negative effect on start-up firms, which can be offset by increasing the order frequent. Advertising, as an investment in goodwill, can increase start-up firms' survival. The advertising strategies vary according to both goodwill and inventory levels, and the policy is more flexible in start-up firms. Externally, a slightly less frequency solvency check gives start-up firms more room for fund raising and/or operation adjustment, and can increase the survival probability. The problems are modelled using Markov decision processes, and numerical illustrations are implemented in Java.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Startups caused increased interest by entrepreneurship, being seen as an alternative to achieve success, money and prestige through creative business, with great potential for profitability but also high risk. It's increasing the recognition importance of stimulating the creation of technology-based companies to an element important for developing countries, stimulating competitiveness and creativity in markets through innovation. This ecosystem includes, according to OECD (2015b), a number of factors such as regulation, access to investments, appropriate market conditions, entrepreneurial culture, knowledge production and dissemination. This study aims to analyze and compare the acceleration mechanisms of government programs for encouraging startups Start-up Brazil and Start-Up Chile, contribute to their evolution, and, as far as possible, contribute to the studies of encouraging entrepreneurship in emerging markets. The research strategy used was the study of multiple cases, and the programs analyzed as single cases. To collect data, we used desk research, interviews with entrepreneurs who have gone through the acceleration process of each of them and members of their teams’ acceleration. The narrative of cases remained the concern of data triangulation and shows the different understandings of the parties regarding the mechanisms used by the programs. Following, a cross analysis of cases was performed. In it, the programs’ contributions were compared and were listed suggestions for their evolution. The results showed that the acceleration mechanisms adopted by the programs, are supportive to the startups performance and that Start-Up Brasil e Start-Up Chile generally played important roles in their trajectories. After analyzing the programs operating modes and study the suggestions for improvement made by the respondents, it was possible to list suggestions for actions in each of its mechanisms.

Lean, Jonathan William Lawson. "Support for post start-up small business growth." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/401.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to determine how small firm support provision might be improved in order to help post start-up businesses in Devon and Cornwall to grow. Interest in this issue stems from (a) previous research carried out in the region highlighting a possible need for continued business support after the initial 12 month start-up period and (b) the increasing emphasis upon stimulating business growth apparent in recent small firm policy. An examination of relevant literature demonstrates that current understanding of the critical influences upon young post start-up business growth and the extent to which existing support adequately addresses such factors is limited. To address these gaps in existing knowledge, two questionnaire surveys are conducted. In both, emphasis is placed upon owner-manager perceptions in recognition of an identified need for support to be client-led and because of the role played by owner-manager perceptions in influencing growth motivation and actual growth. In-depth interviews are also carried out with ownermanagers and staff from start-up support providing organisations. A variety of techniques are employed to analyse questionnaire responses. Overall, results indicate that owner-managers view the critical influences upon the growth of their firms to be highly individual in nature. Other findings show employment growth and growth intentions amongst responding businesses to be limited. However, some variations are shown to exist between firms. Discriminant analysis is employed to determine the effectiveness of those company characteristics associated with variations in predicting business growth, owner-manager growth intentions and owner-manager perceptions of the importance of different factors influencing growth. Results suggest that in providing support for young post start-up firms, the targeting of businesses on the basis of easily measured characteristics is not likely to be effective. Results from the second survey show that whilst start-up support is perceived to be adequate in addressing some growth-relevant factors, for many other factors a 'negative support gap' exists. These gaps relate to areas such as strategic product-market development, access to tangible and non-tangible resources, owner-manager personal development, marketing and financial management. An analysis of owner-manager's awareness, use and perceptions of non-start-up assistance suggests that the identified gaps are not being adequately addressed by other schemes and initiatives. Interview evidence suggests that the limited scale of support available to young micro businesses is perceived to be a particular constraint upon the growth opportunities available to post start-up firms. Drawing on quantitative results and evidence from in-depth interviews, a possible framework for providing effective support for young post start-up businesses in Devon and Cornwall is developed. This proposes the use of a network based approach to both the evaluation of support needs and the provision of assistance. Recognising the varying growth needs, capabilities and ambitions of the owner-managers studied, emphasis is placed upon close cooperation between interested bodies in evaluating the prospects of firms and an individual approach to support delivery. However, it is concluded that in providing assistance for young post start-up firms, a broadly inclusive approach should be adopted. In making recommendations for further research, the limited employment growth experienced by most of the firms studied for this research is recognised as a weakness. A number of methodological improvements are suggested, particularly in relation to the measure of growth used.

Production start-up data is consistently utilized in a reactive manner during the initial stages of a product's lifecycle. However, if proactive information systems are created before full scale production starts, ramp-up cycles can be shortened considerably. This project attempts to develop a framework for analyzing process data quickly and efficiently during a new product start-up in order to provide information for the short term goals relating to attaining stable processes as well as provide guidance on long term handles for process improvement. First, a summary of previous literature regarding start-up process data as well as typical stable process data usage will be presented. This will provide adequate background for evaluating typical gaps present during production ramp-up. Then, solutions to these gaps will be discussed in order to develop tools for better data analysis in shorter periods of time. These methods will then be applied to a case study involving the. new production of Kodak's DCS Pro 14N digital camera. The Kodak Professional DCS Pro 14N was an amazing leap in technology: a camera with double the resolution for roughly half the price of any product available. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that the original demand estimates were grossly underestimated, straining original resource allocations. Manufacturing struggled to start and was already a year behind in backorders. With over 1.500 process attributes collected on each camera, the key drivers of quality had yet to be determined. The surrounding circumstances made the quick analysis of start-up data vital to effective resource management and yield improvement of the camera.
(cont.) After using the new process modeling framework and modified control techniques on the example Kodak case, two additional topics will be discussed. First, the many classifications of return on investment in proactive start-up data analysis will be presented. Ranging from waste minimization to higher customer satisfaction, these incentives justify early preparation for start- up data analysis. Finally, future areas of study will be recommended to augment the findings within the thesis.

Abstract:
The objective of the research was to confirm the theoretical framework on brand building with the empirical data. This comparison was performed with the intention to provide a more objective and practical view on the challenging process of brand building in start-up Swedish fashion companies and thus, assist them in their development. Qualitative research based on interviews was the main research method throughout the work. There are two types of data that have been collected in order to assist the research such as theoretical and empirical. Theoretical data was extracted from the variety of books and articles on brand building, while the empirical data was gathered using interviews as the data collection method. Interviews were performed with Swedish start-up fashion companies in order to better understand the brand importance, brand building process and challenges that companies face. As a result of the qualitative research based on interviews, practical steps of brand building in start-up fashion companies are presented and then compared with the theoretical framework, in order to get a more objective view on the process and assist start-up companies in their development. All this data was analyzed and documented as well as results and propositions for future research.

The aim is to provide a brief tutorial on planning and realization of an internet project too. To give advices and provide experiences, which have been gained during writing the thesis. This work brings to the reader a confrontation of a classical business plan with the entire internet project. It also aims to certify viability of the particular internet start-up idea mainly thanks to a wide research on the public's and attorneys' side of the market. Practical part of the thesis brings up an idea of the particular internet start-up company "Free Advice" and its business model, market research on this project, public's and attorneys' interest, initial phase and the beginning of the realisation of the project. Goals were achieved through practical work on the first three phases of the business plan. The author's added value is mainly in application of theoretical premises of the business plan to the concrete business idea. This will allow other entrepreneurs to easily implement the business plan theory to an internet project in order to justify its meaningfulness. The achieved results can be used in order to realise this particular idea and to get necessary funds.

In Brazil, and more recently in the city of Fortaleza, there is a new form of entrepreneurship that is focused on the information and communication technology service sector and that draws the attention of young people, investors, governments, authors and media companies: it is known as the start-up movement. Today, it is considered to be a driving force behind the creative economy. Rooted on progressive discourse, the words enterprise and innovation seduce new economic agents motivated by success stories from Silicon Valley in America along with increasing commercial activity for digital goods and services. This master’s dissertation assesses, from a sociological point of view, the new productive wave problematized by the light of Manuel Castells’ informational capitalism. Considering the skeptical as well as the optimistic opinions about the impact of this new entrepreneurial rearrangement, the following question is asked: does the startup movement rekindle the capitalist spirit or does it present roots which divert from its speculating essence? The raised hypotheses are based on employability factors as well as cultural, economical, and political matters related to innovation and technology. This study has produced a nationwide quantitative assessment with a special focus on the reality of these Ceará firms; as well as comparative qualitative interviews on American and Brazilian experiences lived by identified agents. This dissertation outlines the public incentive policy of the federal government, the Start-up Brasil Program, from the perspective of these companies and provides details as to the discipline methods of the new enterprising way born in the United States. The startups are very young companies that are headed towards the economic sustainment of the productive sector services. These companies are dropping the seeds that will produce the re-enchantment of young people and bring them back to participation in political debate; they provide relief and reheats the job market; and they produce a democratization of the entrepreneurial “Do-It-Yourself” culture. They capitalize the pivot of the wall street wolves and of agents being charged for new masks. There are developmental logic’s prophylaxis in the face of dreadful innovation stagnation. The lack of continuity in Brazilian governmental politics and cultural nuances related to entrepreneurship are barring the desired regional success of this ecosystem.

In a continuous survival effort, corporations search for different ways to expand their business within the market in which they already operate, or within new desired markets. To reach their objectives, the employees innovate through their initiatives, an act called corporate entrepreneurship. There are many ways that corporates can have an entrepreneurial behaviour, such as through the acquisition of another company. When acquiring a different company, a corporation has as its motivation the desire of some new attributes that either complement or will be part of their indicial objectives. After the acquisition, the integration process between the two (or more) partners is often complicated and painful. The aim of this study is to identify; what are the buying motivations, the problems encountered during the merging process of merge between the partners, and the lessons learned by big/medium corporations when acquiring a Start-up. There is a vast amount of literature concerning the acquisition by big corporations but, when talking about the acquisition of start-ups, one discovers an unexplored gap due to a lack of literature on this subject. The results of this study have been collected through in-depth interviews with employees and entrepreneurs that have taken part in the entire process of acquisition of SAMURAI by Momentum and of Save-me by Buscapé. The results are six suggestions of topics that should be taken into consideration by big/medium corporations when taking the decision of acquiring a start-up: (i) The client base of the acquired company should be previously considered; (ii) a closer contact between the management of both companies before the acquisition is crucial; (iii) hiring a consultancy company to advise during the merge process can be primordial; (iv) the entrepreneur has a central importance for the future of the merged firm; (v) the integration mode has to be carefully choice having the (iv) creation of a corporate venture as a great choice to be consider.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Most small new firms face problems in surviving the gestation process and achieving a viable performance thereafter because of the very fact of their smallness and newness. Due to a lack of internal resources, entrepreneurs of small new firms find it necessary to seek resources from outside the firm through their external social network. The theory of social capital that prescribes valuable resources are embedded in social relations is, thus, particularly relevant to the small business start-up situation. The embedded resources within an external network are hypothesized to have a positive impact on the business performance of these new firms. The main objective of the present study is to empirically investigate the impact of external networks, and in particular the initial social network of entrepreneurs, to the success of small firm start-up in Hong Kong. The second objective is to determine whether there is any interaction effect of the entrepreneur’s networking capability with the external network structure on the start-up success of small Hong Kong firms. To carry out the research, this study offers a conceptual model linking initial network start-up success to initial network structure of start-up, and including an interaction effect from the entrepreneur’s networking capability. The study operationalizes social capital in four types of network constructs: network size, trustworthiness, network support and network diversity. A series of hypotheses relating to these four dimensions asserting external network determinants of the start-up success of small firms is posited. Other hypotheses which assert the interaction effect between an entrepreneur’s networking capability and the initial network structure on the success of small firm start-up, are also posited. A field survey, administered to 1,000 small Hong Kong firms of various industries, is used to gather the data. The questionnaire survey was developed in two languages – Chinese and English – to ensure a good level of understanding in the bilingual business environment of Hong Kong. Of the 1,000 questionnaires dispatched, a final sample of 89 small firms was used to empirically test the hypotheses using multiple regression analysis and multiple hierarchical regression analysis. Control variables such as entrepreneurs’ experiences and education prior to the firm start-up are included.Empirical results indicate that the verification of social capital theory’s prescription for start-up success cannot be supported unequivocally. The results suggest that some initial network conditions such as initial size of strong tie network, network support and network diversity are positively associated with some measures of start-up success, but trustworthiness of network ties and the size of weak tie network do not figure among them. No evidence is found to support that entrepreneurs’ networking capability can positively enhance the effect of the initial network structure on start-up success. Overall, the study raises some questions on the positive linear relationship of certain operationalized constructs such as network size and trustworthiness of social capital with start-up success. Following the findings of this research, future studies may choose to further investigate social capital theory on small start-up success by refining the operationalization of social capital, and verify other interaction effects of entrepreneurs’ networking capabilities.

Abstract:

Abstract:

sonami AG is a company that is located in the Principality of Liechtenstein. It was founded in 2007. Since then it didn’t gain many customers and it is questionable how long the?company will be able to survive with having that few customers. In order to get rid of the current situation and to achieve a sustainable expansion strategy in the long run sonami asked us for help. The question thus is; how would an international expansion strategy look like.

In order to answer this question a case study approach was used. Four successful micro companies were interviewed and asked about their international strategy and their recommendations for expanding abroad.

In addition internationalization literature has been reviewed. Furthermore the concept of strategy, strategic planning and strategic management has been discussed. In the end a framework for sonami was developed. Different approaches, mixed with different recommendations and insights of the case studies were used to develop it.

The result is that sonami has major problems internally, which should be solved before entering any international path. Our developed framework names several pre‐requisites that need to be fulfilled before moving on to the next step. We have tried to generate a deliberate strategy for sonami. We also recommended sonami to take advantage of opportunities given. This would however mean that sonami would then follow an emergent strategy.??

Abstract:
The hardest time to receive financing for a venture is at its earliest stage. These ventures are among the riskiest investments for an investor, which creates a gap in financing that is often bridged through a source of funding called Angel Financing. Angel investors are one of the best providers of early stage funding. This thesis will explain what angel investing is, how they work, and what angels look for. This information will help entrepreneurs be better equipped to find an angel investor for their venture.

Abstract:
Artificial lift in oil wells using a downhole pump has received much attentionthe last decades and is established as a reliable and efficient liftingmethod. In particular, artificial lift using an electric submersible pump(EPS) has proven to be an important alternative in deep wells with highproduction rate requirements. This thesis investigate the problem of controlling the ESP intake pressureunder rigid ESP operational constraints and input requirements, using theESP frequency and choke position as control inputs.A mathematical model of a system containing ESP lifted wells is createdand a control strategy that fulfil the control requirements is proposed. The model is an extension of the ESP model developed by Amundsen(2010) andcontain four ESP lifted wells. Mathematical proof of open-loop stabilityis derived based on analysis of a linearized well model. Also, closed-loopstability for the linearized model is proved based on frequency analysis. The proposed control strategy is tested on the model in a range of differentcase study. The control system display a capability of minimizing thecontrol error while keeping the ESP operated within the given constraints, with an optimal combination of control inputs. Simulation results indicatethat the proposed control strategy is capable of handling a step-changein ESP intake pressure, ESP tripping, and ESP and booster-pump start-up/shut-down.

Abstract:
This study investigates the reasons for apparent differences in entrepreneurship rates in rural and urban areas using a Survey of Rural Kentucky Residents (SRKR) and the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED) data. We estimate the determinants of dissimilar characteristics for rural and urban areas in two aspects: one is individual and contextual resources; the other is cultural tendencies of resources. The results of the analysis suggest that the difference in available individual, economic, and social support resources does not explain the observed difference in entrepreneurship rate. The results also indicate that gender, ethnicity, income, and number of children in the family have different effects on entrepreneurial intentions in rural and urban settings. The results suggest that policy makers need to account for cultural or geographical differences when designing entrepreneurial educational and support programs in order to enhance the establishment of new business between rural and urban areas.
