Full textThis research is embedded in a prolific strand of studies investigating the world of networks with the aim to understand how they can generate organisational benefits, both in terms of profit and organisational knowledge. The driving idea, already extensively discussed, is that network-based organisations can achieve better performances, generating trust and knowledge through a variety of alliances (horizontal, vertical, transversal…) and ties (strong, weak…). In particular, aim of the present research is to stress the networking contribution to the start-up phase, when firms are established. Indeed it is during this phase that the existence or not of alliances makes the difference, contributing to the success of firms operating in a network-based system and recognizing its important contribution to the business results. In synthesis, goal of this analysis was to highlight the impact of networking activities, either on the financial assets or on the generation of innovation through the spread of new ideas. In particular, resorting to the concept of “learning economy”, I attempted to demonstrate the strong ties existing between knowledge and innovation, with a particular emphasis on the so-called “spillover effect”.

In Brazil, and more recently in the city of Fortaleza, there is a new form of entrepreneurship that is focused on the information and communication technology service sector and that draws the attention of young people, investors, governments, authors and media companies: it is known as the start-up movement. Today, it is considered to be a driving force behind the creative economy. Rooted on progressive discourse, the words enterprise and innovation seduce new economic agents motivated by success stories from Silicon Valley in America along with increasing commercial activity for digital goods and services. This master’s dissertation assesses, from a sociological point of view, the new productive wave problematized by the light of Manuel Castells’ informational capitalism. Considering the skeptical as well as the optimistic opinions about the impact of this new entrepreneurial rearrangement, the following question is asked: does the startup movement rekindle the capitalist spirit or does it present roots which divert from its speculating essence? The raised hypotheses are based on employability factors as well as cultural, economical, and political matters related to innovation and technology. This study has produced a nationwide quantitative assessment with a special focus on the reality of these Ceará firms; as well as comparative qualitative interviews on American and Brazilian experiences lived by identified agents. This dissertation outlines the public incentive policy of the federal government, the Start-up Brasil Program, from the perspective of these companies and provides details as to the discipline methods of the new enterprising way born in the United States. The startups are very young companies that are headed towards the economic sustainment of the productive sector services. These companies are dropping the seeds that will produce the re-enchantment of young people and bring them back to participation in political debate; they provide relief and reheats the job market; and they produce a democratization of the entrepreneurial “Do-It-Yourself” culture. They capitalize the pivot of the wall street wolves and of agents being charged for new masks. There are developmental logic’s prophylaxis in the face of dreadful innovation stagnation. The lack of continuity in Brazilian governmental politics and cultural nuances related to entrepreneurship are barring the desired regional success of this ecosystem.
LUISE, VINCENZO. "THE FOOD START-UP ECONOMY: IMAGINED FUTURES, ETHICS AND FINANCIAL EVALUATIONS." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/605949.
Full textThe neoliberal policies, the spread of new digital technologies and organizational innovations have produced a fundamental transition in advanced industrial from a manufacturing-based to a services- driven economy. In the post-fordist society, socio-economic systems are based on the production, reproduction, and consumption of information and knowledge. This has also transformed the nature of labor: venture labor is characterized by individualized, networked and highly performative working practices. This has generated a wave of digital ventures which are rooted in the entrepreneurial faith of Californian ideology. The present work aim to explore the multifaceted nature of the food start-up economy from three different theoretical perspectives: the imagined futures, the entrepreneurial vocation and ethics, and the financial evaluation practices. The first perspective allows me to describe how start-uppers create narrative projections about future economies and how they bridge the gap between the present and an unpredictable future. The second explains in which places and through which practices the start-uppers develop and perform specific entrepreneurial attitudes. The third focuses on the dynamics and assets which affect the financial value of the start- ups. Coherently with this theoretical frame, the methodological strategy adopted is based on the inventive methods strategy within a mixed methods approach. I combined different methodological techniques such as ethnography, semi-structured interviews and digital methods techniques. According to the findings, this work has shown how the imagined economies and the entrepreneurial vocations affect the financial evaluations of the start-ups. The economic value is not based on quantitative metrics and on the probabilistic calculation. On one hand, the role of economic imaginary is necessary for acting in an uncertain economic context in a conscious way. On the other hand, the entrepreneurial attitude represents the main asset on which these evaluations are based. In other words, start-uppers have to demonstrate through public performances that they have the capacities to be successful in order to receive financial support. Thus, fictional expectations and the performances of the ‘calling’ are the sources of financial value in start-up economy.

Full textTraditional discounted cash flow models do a poor job of capturing the value of firms, especially when these firms are fraught with high uncertainty. Real options method is used as a technique to enhance the valuation process and to capture value of the future opportunities. On this basis, we propose a model to estimate the value of Internet firms by combining these two methods (DCF & RO). Although their limits, we aimed in this study to understand and to explain the fundamental valuation process of the Internet Firms, and eventually the gap, existing with the market value. Our results show the importance of the Real options method. More importantly, we contribute to real options research by highlighting their managerial implications, especially their analytical strategic mindset in the valuation process

Full textThis work aims to analyse the entire entrepreneurial process starting from the entrepreneurial ecosystem, through the study of the factors affecting the entrepreneurial propensity and the start-up of a new company, and the role of business incubators on the take-off and growth of new ventures. The analysis of the entrepreneurial ecosystem is focused on its main actors; the relationships among them and the policy that should be implemented to create a supportive ecosystem. There is no one standard template for building such ecosystems; each "region” must find its own unique approach. The second part of the study is focused on the sources and dynamics of entrepreneurial supply. In particular, it analyses the entrepreneurial orientation of a large sample of Polytechnic University of Marche’s students. The focus on young, well-educated, potential entrepreneurs is justified by the possibility to anticipate future trends in the entrepreneurial supply in knowledge-based sectors. In line with previous research in other countries, entrepreneurial intent is explained by a wide set of variables, including psychological, social and contextual factors. Most of the results obtained confirm the previous findings with some differences: the university support is perceived as salient, while the lack of institutional and professional support and perception of friends and family support, on the contrary, do not affect the propensity, with some exception for females; the parents’ role model is only significant for the females, while for males is significant the friends’ role model. It is notable how, in a country characterized by the widespread and relevant role of “strong ties” and where the family is crucial in feeding a strong entrepreneurial supply, that family support is perceived to be not relevant in stimulating entrepreneurship. Research on nascent entrepreneurship shows that there is a self-selection during the entrepreneurial process from “thinking about self-employment” to “discovery and exploitation” phase to start-up. To understand the reason of high rates of “abandonment”, the study was conducted on a sample of 380 nascent entrepreneurs during the scouting activity of business idea. The study, apart to generate a large number of descriptive statistics, sheds light on the impact and relative importance of some explanatory variables connected with the pre-start-up phase. Knowledge of the behavior of nascent entrepreneurs is important for those actors involved in supporting start-ups in their birth and growth (like a business incubator) and for those creating and maintaining policy measures on a macro-economic level.

Full textIn the first chapter of the present thesis, I empirically investigate precautionary savings under liquidity constraints in Italy using household panel data. I exploit a unique indicator of subjective variance of income growth, which allows to measure the strength of the precautionary motive for saving, and a variety of survey-based indicators of liquidity constraints. Using an endogenous switching regression approach, I eventually found the precautionary motive for savings to be stronger for those households who face binding constraints, or expect constraints to be binding in the future. Indeed, a complementarity relation exists between precautionary savings and effective and expected liquidity constraints. Moreover, the introduction of a survey-based measure of risk aversion allows a better identification of the coefficient associated with the subjective measure of variance of income growth. In the second chapter, relying on a direct question about the desired amount of precautionary wealth from the 2002 wave of the Italian Survey of Household Income and Wealth, I assess the main determinants of precautionary motive for saving. In particular, I provide an empirical assessment of the linkage existing between the composition of households' portfolio and the amount of wealth households wish to have to protect themselves against unexpected contingencies. As expected, a strong and negative correlation exists between the desired amount of precautionary wealth and the ownership of a portfolio made exclusively of safe assets. However, households do not seem to use portfolio diversification to reduce exposure to total risk. Finally, I address the issue of complementarity vs. substitution between formal and informal insurance schemes. Actually, trust in capital market would lower substantially the amount of wealth households wish to detain for precautionary reasons. However, there is no evidence in favour of a negative and strong linkage between precautionary saving and insurance. In the third chapter, I assess the relationship between initial household net wealth and the probability of switching to entrepreneurship in Italy and the United States, using household-level data from the Survey of Household Income and Wealth (SHIW) and the Panel Survey of Income Dynamics (PSID). I formulated several theoretical predictions, which are then compared with the data at hand. First of all, I argue that initial wealth should matter more for potential Italian entrepreneurs, who may encounter greater difficulties than their US counterparts in obtaining sufficient funds from a bank or financial institution to start a business. From this perspective, "informal markets" (i.e. help from friends or relatives) should play a more significant role for potential entrepreneurs in Italy, especially for those who are more likely to be constrained. Secondly, I claim that a well developed financial market, by reducing household exposure to financial risk, would positively affect transition into entrepreneurship. Therefore, I fill a gap in the literature introducing a portfolio diversification index, calculated as the inverse of the Herfindhal index, in order to assess the level of financial sophistication. Last but not least, I simultaneously estimate the probability of switching to entrepreneurship and changes in net wealth. Using a sample selection model with endogenous switching makes it possible to deal with endogeneity issues, related to the fact that households may actually accumulate assets prior to setting up a business.

As the era of the digital economy approaches, the wave of "shared economy" in recent years has created economic benefits through the integration of mobile Internet platforms and idle assets. It has created new momentum for economic development through "supply" and "demand" for start-ups and funding from investors. This case study is about the successful digital economy startup in the transport sector, the Uber Technologies Inc.. In this research, we try to study Uber, as a case of "shared economy", by collecting a large number of Wall Street Journals (WSJ), extracting news materials, analyzing and summarizing them, and going through discussions of relevant focuses. The research method used in this study is the method of context analysis, which is based on gathering information using key words such as Uber's intellectual property rights, patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets. This paper uses the role of the system of intellectual property rights, to explore the relevance between the management of intellectual property rights and the rapid development of the company. By analyzing the relevant meaning and using it as the theoretical basis of this study, in support with Uber's management point of view, this study explores the relationship between intellectual property rights management and the development of the company. Namely, how to create the competitive advantage of intellectual property rights? And to deduct the possible science and technology management issues emerging companies might face, while Uber's continues its global expansion. Finally, according to the Uber's WSJ news, this paper summarizes the key topics of WSJ as supporting data to support the six important findings of this study. From the research results, we can know the diversity of topics related to S & T management, as well as the particularity of management. This will enable digital technology start-ups to learn from others and create new areas of the “shared economy”.

Full textIn a global scenario, where volatility and uncertainty are experienced in the markets, associated with the phenomenon of workers’ changing lifestyles, career management and personal goals, the need to create means for companies to be able to respond to all these phenomena is more intense. Thus, in the current conjecture, there is the constant shortage within companies of support from highly skilled personnel, whose adequate resources are not always available or easily accessible. In this scenario, the emerging need for an intermediary who can link available qualified professionals to the companies is discernible. Thus, and in order to demonstrate the relevance of the theme, the realization of a business plan was identified as an appropriate tool to aggregate all information, and to draw conclusions regarding strategies, value proposition and viability.

Alves, Sara Brites. "Genibet : a biopharmaceutical contract manufacturing start-up." Master's thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/17322.

"MetaCase : from a start-up to an international company." Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/15623.

No entanto, as empresas empreendedoras tendem a falhar, muitas vezes, devido á problemas iniciais.
