Abstract:
The Faerie Queene frequently meditates on how representing space—imagistically or narratively—involves distortion. This chapter proposes that allegory as an expressive mode allows the poem to interrogate the workings of mapping and poetry in particular, and of representation more broadly. Noting that some of the poem’s most vexing encounters with allegory’s limits come at moments in which the representation of space is at stake, the chapter considers several moments in the poem (e.g. Book V’s Giant with the Scales) when cartographic anxiety reveals a tension between the map’s and poem’s literary and literal ambitions. If mapping depends on an enabling metaphoricity that conceals its artifice, then allegory, which trumpets its metaphoricity to problematize its artifice, emerges as the poetic mode best able to supply an alternative model for how the literal and the literary interact in the making of poetry.

Rex, Ahdar, and Leigh Ian. Part II, 4 Models of Religion–State Relations. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199606474.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter surveys the various types of interaction between religion and government. The object is not to posit yet another typology of religion-state relations, but to consider which model or models best advance religious freedom in a liberal state. These models include theocracy, Erastianism, separationism and secularism, religious ‘establishment’, Pluralist models, neutrality models, and the competitive market model. Overall, it is difficult to single out one model of the religion-state relationship as indisputably the best in terms of religious freedom. Several systems — mild establishment, pluralism, and substantive neutrality — seem to score highly in that they recognize that a measure of interaction and cooperation between government and religious communities is useful. Others, by contrast, such as theocracy and Erastianism, can be safely rejected as inimicable with religious freedom. Some models, such as separationism, deserve at best only cautious approval. Its secularist philosophy can in practice produce a climate of hostility to religion and its free exercise.

Menz, Georg. Welfare State Models. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199579983.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
The different models of welfare states are explored, drawing on the seminal work of Esping-Andersen. Next, we examine the challenges to welfare state systems arising from demographic change, new family formation patterns, immigration, and new trends in employment. Governments also struggle with the rising financial liabilities arising from pensions and healthcare. All of this has inspired liberalizing reforms across the OECD. To the political left, the European Union offered an unfulfilled opportunity for market reregulation. Reform measures in this domain are difficult to implement and often assume a piecemeal character. Yet demographic change in particular will force policymakers’ hands in years to come.
