Fleming, Tyler, and Toyin Falola. "Africa's Media Empire: Drum's Expansion to Nigeria." History in Africa 32 (2005): 133–64. http://dx.doi.org/10.1353/hia.2005.0008.

Abstract:
Publishing in Africa remains so difficult an enterprise that many publishers have collapsed, their dreams disappearing with them. This is especially true of the print media, particularly newspapers and magazines. During the past century, many magazines and newspapers failed to establish a loyal readership, keep costs down, insure wide circulation, or turn a huge profit. Consequently, not many African magazines can be viewed as “successful.” Drum magazine, however, remains an exception. In 1951 Drum, a magazine written for and by Africans, was established in South Africa. Drum enjoyed a great deal of success and is now widely recognized as having been a driving force in black South African culture and life throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In the South African historiography Drum has been thoroughly researched. The magazine's impact on South African journalism, literature, gender configurations, African resistance, and urban South African culture has been documented and often lauded by various scholars. Many former members of the South African edition's payroll, both editors and staff alike, have gone on to become successes in literature, journalism, and photography. Often such staff members credit Drum for directly shaping their careers and directly state this in their writings. Consequently, Drum is often associated only with South Africa. While Drum greatly influenced South Africa, its satel¬lite projects throughout Africa were no less important. These satellite projects cemented Drum's reputation as the leading magazine newspaper in Africa and each edition became fixtures in west African and east African societies.

Wigginton, Eliot. "Foxfire Grows Up." Harvard Educational Review 59, no. 1 (April 1, 1989): 24–50. http://dx.doi.org/10.17763/haer.59.1.x195p1480477p765.

Abstract:
For more than twenty years, students at Rabun Gap High School, a conservative, traditionally organized public school in Appalachian Georgia, have published Foxfire books and magazines. Conceived by students in Eliot Wigginton's English classes, the project's publication of oral history grew into what was called cultural journalism. The national recognition and financial success of the Foxfire books and magazines led to the adoption of the approach by teachers throughout the country. However, many who attempted such projects did not recognize that Foxfire is not really a magazine, but a philosophy of education firmly grounded in principles of democratic, experiential education. Using the magazine as a device without the principles upon which Foxfire had been based often resulted in methods as traditional and teacher centered as those they were meant to replace. Recognizing this, Wigginton and the Foxfire staff began to carefully define the ingredients that led to the success of the Foxfire approach in Rabun County, and to look for ways to assist other teachers in adopting the philosophy and the approach in their classrooms. In this article, Wigginton describes Foxfire's core educational practices and the major aspects of the Foxfire staffs current work with teachers.

Abstract:
In this work we intend to make a compilation of the names of the satirical magazines that appeared in the city of Seville from 1900 until the last years of the Second Republic, together with their cartoonists, providing new headlines as a basis for the bibliography of the press already existing in Seville. It would also be a continuation of the search for local satirical magazines of the 19th century and the cartoonists of the same that we already started in previous years. In addition, we develop some of them, giving information on their physical location and highlighting some notes about their staff, motivation and informative content, highlighting their way of seeing some day-to-day events in the city and others related to the history of Seville itself and that of its characters. Another aspect that we consider of great value are those related to freedom of expression, such as the crimes of defamation and against honor, such as those that occurred with the Don Próspero magazines in 1902 and with the publication of en 1930, junto a unas notas sobre el secuestro de la edición Sevilla en Broma del columnista y periodista de sucesos Galerín en 1926.

Abstract:
Abstract Caricature became entrenched as a common form of social commentary in Russian visual culture in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Four prominent humor magazines: Iskra (Spark, 1859–1873), Budil’nik (Alarm Clock, 1865–1918), Strekoza (Dragonfly, 1875–1908), and Oskolki (Splinters, 1881–1916) promoted caricatures and built success largely on the public’s appetite for them. The editors and staff of these humor magazines made caricature a ready and effective tool of social criticism and helped develop a critical public familiar enough with the form to appreciate it. The rather gentle caricature of the early period and its benign social criticism established a foundation for a harsher partisan form of caricature as political advocacy during the revolution of 1905–1906.

Abstract:
In the 1980s, Polish schools hardly had access to computers, particularly at the primary and secondary levels. The main reasons were funds and shortage of qualified staff that could handle computer hardware. As a consequence, the youth first came across a computer, how to use it, service hardware, and write programs outside schools in the early 1980s. Often informal groups of hobbyists gathered around a single computer were the seeds of microcomputer clubs, which cropped up in huge numbers in Poland in the 1980s. The objective of the paper is to portray the role of microcomputer clubs in the process of shaping the youth and computer education in the 1980s in Poland compared to other countries. The conclusions are founded on a literature review. The analyzed material included an Internet Archive collection “The Computer Magazine Archives”. The content of one of the first Polish computer magazines, Bajtek Magazine was analyzed in detail. It has been demonstrated that the Polish youth of the 1980s first came across a computer mainly outside schools, primarily in microcomputer clubs. It was the root of computer and information technology education in Poland. Moreover, microcomputer clubs were reported to provide education, as well as foster character education, aid socialization, and shape attitudes.

Abstract:
This study is a cross-national empirical analysis of popular science publishing among university staff in a 13-country sample. The countries included in the study are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, the UK and the USA. The study seeks to quantify the extent of popular science publishing and its relationship with scientific publishing. Popular science publishing was measured as the number of articles written by scientists in newspapers and magazines over the three-year period 2005-07. Our findings suggest that popular science publishing is undertaken by a minority of academic staff and to a far lesser extent than scientific publishing. Despite the arguably fewer rewards associated with publishing for the non-specialist public, our data suggests that academic staff with popular publications have higher levels of scientific publishing and academic rank. The positive relationship between scientific and popular publishing is consistent across all countries and academic fields. The extent of popular science publishing varies with field and country.

Abstract:
Primary health care (PHC) implementation has stimulated the need and interest in developing continuing education (CE) programs in Nigeria. A population study of 144 government (69%) and private (31%) health workers in the Ibarapa District of Oyo State in Nigeria documented their CE opportunities. Only 39 percent had attended an in-service training (IST) program in the past five years. Fewer (32%) had received a supervisory visit within the previous month, and most of these visits contained little of educational relevance according to respondents. Slightly over half (54%) reported attending a staff meeting in the previous month, but 72 percent had attended at least one in the past six months. Like supervisory visits, these meetings were not primarily educational in nature. Only 58 percent engaged in self-study through reading in the past six months, but quality reading materials were scarce, forcing health workers to rely on old texts and popular health magazines. Local government staff and workers with formal health training were most likely to have taken advantage of an IST. Trained workers and males were more likely to have engaged in self-study. New PHC management structures have the potential filling CE gaps and redressing imbalances in CE opportunities in this and other rural districts throughout the country.

Abstract:
Purpose Using an econometric approach, this study aims to examine Mid-Atlantic USA wine consumers’ willingness to participate in winery or vineyard tours based on their wine knowledge, wine drinking occasions, demographical factors, past experience with wine tourism and wine purchasing behaviors. Design/methodology/approach An internet-based consumer survey (N = 977) conducted 22-24 October 2014 was used to collect data. The screening criteria for the survey participants were: 1) being a resident of the Mid-Atlantic region (New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, USA), 2) at least 21 years old, 3) not an industry member, and 4) having purchased and consumed wine within the past year. In addition to descriptive statistics, a logistic regression was used to estimate consumers’ willingness to participate in winery or vineyard tours. Independent variables were categorized into five groups: sources of wine knowledge, wine drinking occasions, demographical factors, past experience and wine purchasing behaviors. Findings With 736 valid observations, the logistic regression shows that males are more likely to be interested in winery or vineyard tours, while young adults (<25 years old) are less likely. Learning about wines from winery tasting room staff members, from wine magazines or from local and regional magazines are the top three positive influencers on interest in these activities. Past wine tourism experience in the Mid-Atlantic region, drinking wine as an everyday beverage and giving wines as gifts also show a positive relationship with likelihood of participating in these activities. Practical implications Study results can help the Mid-Atlantic wine industry understand wine tourists’ behaviors and preferences. Advertising in wine magazines and local and regional magazines can be used to target wine consumers interested in winery or vineyard tours. Attributes (i.e. past experience with wine tourism and gaining knowledge from winery tasting room staff) that are related to the quality of wine tourism experience were identified. Participants were also interested in purchasing wine from the winery during or after participating in wine tourism activities; therefore, wineries should focus on guest interactions to encourage such purchases. Originality/value This survey collected data from both consumers who had or who lacked wine tourism experience, which allowed us to gather input from wine drinkers who had not necessarily visited tasting rooms. This survey instrument can be used to collect data from wine consumers residing in regions where the presence of wineries and wine tourism is low, which can provide insight that otherwise might be influenced by currently offered wine tourism activities. This paper uses an econometric approach to understand consumer interests in wine tourism in the Mid-Atlantic region and provides a comprehensive, clear and informative profile of likely wine tourism participants who reside in a region that has not been studied comprehensively.

Abstract:
Of all things relevant to the Great East Japan Earthquake, what drew the highest degree of attention from not only Japan but elsewhere around the world was the Fukushima Daiichi (No.1) Nuclear Power Plant’s nuclear power accidents that bears comparison with Chernobyl’s. During the subsequent four months, though this nuclear plant has not gone critical again, the leakage of radioactive materials from within the plant’s compounds continues. The possibility of another major accident happening, e.g. hydrogen explosion, breaking of containment vessel, in which radioactive materials would once again be strewed over the peripheral districts is not totally eradicated, albeit not so high. Given such a situation, the JDR Editorial staff has decided to examine the developments since the outbreak of the Great East Japan Earthquake and furnish the readers with updated information about developments leading to the outbreak of the accidents at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and on debates that have since evolved in Japan. Thus, this presentation here could be termed a summarization of articles that have been carried in Japanese newspapers and magazines. It admittedly includes such information whose authenticity was not fully confirmed. The judgments and views expressed in this article represent the common ground shared by vernacular newspapers and magazines. As was the case with the previous issue of this journal, the judgments and views that represent the majority opinion in Japan are carried in this issue without modification. (K.J., July 11, 2011)

Abstract:
COVID-19 has presented both a health and an information risk with the viral spread of sometimes partial, false or erroneous news. In the Arab region, the media spheres have been saturated with information regarding coronavirus news. From social and traditional media, Arab audiences have been bombarded with a plethora of information, some of which was confusing and contradictory. As coronavirus sweeps across the world, many questions have been raised about the possibility of practicing the rites of the month of Ramadan and to observe fasting by Muslims. With the multiplication of the responses from medical staff, doctors of the law and political representatives, COVID-19 has simultaneously become a health, religious, political and ethical problem for the Muslim world. The premise elaborated so far calls for an in-depth research on the return of news on the official Facebook pages of three online magazines during the coronavirus emergency. The research carries out a qualitative media content analysis of all the news published by three digital ethnic newspapers: The Muslim News (United Kingdom), the Saphir News (France) and the Daily Muslim (Italy). The magazines have undertaken to stem the spread of fake news by offering users data and updates on COVID-19, proposing themselves as authoritative voices and reliable sources of information. Ramadan turns out to be a very central element in the three magazines in different measures, since it is an issue that becomes more and more urgent for the Muslim community as the weeks go by. The centrality of the religious element in the information flows is in line with the centrality of Islam in the individual and community life of the faithful. The health and religious emergency were narrated together providing updates on the daily measures to be put in place. Individuals have been called to face the health emergency stimulated by their sense of responsibility towards others also through religious principles. Social media have played an important role from religious, cultural and social points of view in one of the most important moments of the year for the Islamic community.

Abstract:
Survey data from 788 single-family residences from New England were analyzed to evaluate purchasing preferences and gardening habits. Particular attention was focused on plant attributes and choices of independent garden centers vs. mass merchandisers. Independent garden centers, magazines, and friends were the most important sources of gardening information, while mass merchandisers were relatively unimportant information sources. While consumers trusted information received at independent garden centers, they did not trust mass merchandiser information as much. The most important product and service attributes of retail establishments were well-maintained plants, informative signage, knowledgeable staff, and a wide selection of plant material. Gardening chemicals and fertilizers were purchased at mass merchandisers due to price. Consumers preferred to purchase high-value, long-lived plants (trees and shrubs) at independent garden centers due to higher plant quality and access to knowledgeable staff. When making plant purchases, plant appearance was the most important consideration regardless of whether the plant was an annual, perennial, or woody plant. The presence of flowers on plants was not ranked as influential in making purchase selections, but evidence of new growth, the presence of dark green foliage, and knowledge of a northern-grown source were important. For trees and shrubs, the significance of a plant guarantee and knowledge of a northern-grown source increased in importance in comparison to annuals and perennials.

Despite the international recognition of the fact that patient can help improve her or his safety, there is little evidence that shows how patient want to take the active role. The aim of this study was to investigate Patients’ Attitudes Toward Receiving Information and Blood Transfusion Safety. This study is performed by systematic reviewing of articles, magazines, foreign books and world health organization reports related to blood transfusion and its auditing. data banks were reviewed electronically. Electronic searches include: Magiran, SID, Embase, MIDLINE. Keywords used in searching includes: patient’s involvement, transfusion safety, blood transfusion and their Persian equivalences. Research evidence showed that little studies about patients' willingness to accept findings of these innovative plans or factors influencing their participation level have been performed. Role of patient participation as main base of clinical dominance can improve hospital and health center safety level in clinical processes. Patients can participate in pre-, during and post-stages of safety control of blood transfusion. Lack of adequate information and contrasts and confliction of staff with patients causes delay in this process.

Abstract:
Digitisation offers many advantages for academic libraries. This study explores the status and practices of digitisation in Kuwaiti academic libraries, and librarians’ perceived importance of digitisation. The survey method was employed, and a questionnaire was used to collect data from four universities and two other higher education institutions; one academic institution did not participate due to administrative procedural requirements. All professional librarians from these institutions were invited to participate, 81 responses (65%) were received. The results demonstrated that current digitisation projects focus most on digitising magazines, books, periodicals, dissertations and theses, photographs, and university publications. The respondents reported a moderate level of satisfaction with digitisation projects and attached a high level of importance to starting digitisation projects. This might reflect a high level of awareness among librarians regarding the challenges encountered and their potential solutions. Copyright issues, staff training, and funding were among the top five challenges and suggestions for improving digitisation projects. Several recommendations were suggested based on the results obtained to enhance digitisation in Kuwaiti academic libraries, such as more effort on the part of academic libraries into planning digitisation projects.

Abstract:
The men's lifestyle magazines FHM (For Him Magazine) and Ralph are a significant presence in the Australian market, and both target a specific readership of young, heterosexual men. My central research question concerns how desired audiences are constructed or imagined at the ‘front end’ of magazine production. One of the major tasks of the editors and publishers of these magazines is to access, and compete for, an audience. This paper aims to examine the contradictions apparent in the editorial practices of defining or envisioning an audience for Ralph and FHM. To understand the process of how they produce the magazines, I examine the editorial staffs' conceptions of the ‘audience’; the ways in which it is created and for what purposes, as well as the terms used to describe this integral part of the industry. How the audience is defined and constructed highlights how contradictions, creativity and constraint operate in defining the audience.

Abstract:
Background As familiarity with and convenience of using personal devices in hospitals help improve the productivity, efficiency, and workflow of hospital staff, the health care bring-your-own-device (BYOD) market is growing consistently. However, security concerns owing to the lack of control over the personal mobile devices of staff, which may contain sensitive data such as personal health information of patients, make it one of the biggest health care information technology (IT) challenges for hospital administrations. Objective Given that the hospital BYOD security has not been adequately addressed in peer-reviewed literature, the aim of this paper was to identify key security challenges associated with hospital BYOD usage as well as relevant solutions that can cater to the identified issues by reviewing gray literature. Therefore, this research will provide additional practical insights from current BYOD practices. Methods A comprehensive gray literature review was conducted, which followed the stepwise guidelines and quality assessment criteria set out by Garousi et al. The searched literature included tier 1 sources such as health care cybersecurity market reports, white papers, guidelines, policies, and frameworks as well as tier 2 sources such as credible and reputed health IT magazines, databases, and news articles. Moreover, a deductive thematic analysis was conducted to organize the findings based on Schlarman’s People Policy Technology model, promoting a holistic understanding of hospitals’ BYOD security issues and solutions. Results A total of 51 sources were found to match the designed eligibility criteria. From these studies, several sociotechnical issues were identified. The major challenges identified were the use of devices with insufficient security controls by hospital staff, lack of control or visibility for the management to maintain security requirements, lack of awareness among hospital staff, lack of direction or guidance for BYOD usage, poor user experience, maintenance of legal requirements, shortage of cybersecurity skills, and loss of devices. Although technologies such as mobile device management, unified endpoint management, containerization, and virtual private network allow better BYOD security management in hospitals, policies and people management measures such as strong security culture and staff awareness and training improve staff commitment in protecting hospital data. Conclusions The findings suggest that to optimize BYOD security management in hospitals, all 3 dimensions of the security process (people, policy, and technology) need to be given equal emphasis. As the nature of cybersecurity attacks is becoming more complex, all dimensions should work in close alignment with each other. This means that with the modernization of BYOD technology, BYOD strategy, governance, education, and relevant policies and procedures also need to adapt accordingly.

Abstract:
The editorial board of the Historical Reporter suggested that I should publish some memoirs for the special edition of the magazine. Believing that the magazine's readers might be interested in how the editorial boards of history magazines operated in our country in the past, I decided to publish my notes. The events described in this piece took place in the 1970s–1980s, i.e. 35–50 years ago. A lot of my mentors and older colleagues have unfortunately passed away… A lot has changed and continues to change in how the editorial staff of history magazines operates. Younger readers might find it nearly impossible to imagine some of the processes, phenomena, and actions that happened in those days... Nevertheless, I believe it is my duty as a historian to relay the past as it happened, without embellishing or holding back anything, as well as to talk about my mentors and colleagues that I got to work with. It is my earnest hope that my humble work will bring to life the people behind the hundreds of the History of the USSR issues sitting on library shelves all over the world.

Abstract:
This study examines inventory management and financial performance of Small Scale Apicultural Enterprises in Cameroon, the case of Oku Honey Cooperative Society Limited (OHCSL). The independent variable (Inventory management) proxy by raw materials inventory, work-in-progress inventory, finished products inventory, and packaging material inventory was regressed against dependent variable (financial performance) proxy by gross profit margin. Data used in this study cover the period 1988-2017. The primary data was collected using interviews, structured and semi- structured questionnaires administered to the management staff of the organization. Using magazines, internship reports and annual reports of the enterprise, secondary data was collected. Using multiple regression analysis, the study established that a positive relationship exist between the independent (inventory management) and dependent variables (financial performance) at OHCSL. However, it was uncovered that holding raw material inventory contributed minimal on the financial performance of OHCSL. This was attributed to the fact that honey is processed within 24hours postharvest and hence the cooperative avoids holding raw material inventory. Consequently, the study recommended improvement in inventory management practices including improving staff capacity at the cooperative.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to assess the representation of women of color (WOC) in the top 3 fashion magazines and explore the implications of underrepresentation within marketing communications. The authors draw from diffusion theory and marketplace omission and commission to situate the research focus and highlight its application to the study findings. Design/methodology/approach A content analysis was conducted on 481 cover models on the top three fashion magazines of 2018 – Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Vanity Fair during 2006–2018. Findings The findings indicate WOC are underrepresented despite the strides of inclusion in the marketplace in America during a postracial period. Representation is as follows: white – 412 (86%); black – 41 (9%); Latina – 19 (3.9%); biracial 7 (1.5%); Asian – 1 (0.2%); and Native American – 1 (0.2%). Latina models had the lowest representation. Native and Asian women were completely excluded. When they do appear, black and Latina cover models are more likely than white models to be shown wearing sexually suggestive attire. Practical implications This study makes four recommendations to promote antiracism in marketing: diversify staff hiring and editorial decision-makers for public-facing talent; solicit counsel from multicultural marketing agencies; create antiracist marketing curriculum; and cultivate a pipeline of diverse talent for future hiring. Originality/value The originality of this paper centers its contribution to the dearth research investigating representation implications within the fashion marketing industry during an alleged post-racial period, and a longer time span. It also presents structured antiracist marketing solutions to mitigate underrepresentation.

Abstract:
Theoretical part of the article deals with secondary prophylaxis of speech disorders, which includes early children identification of the high-risk group. Tertiary level is oriented on supportive and developing actions for children with diagnosed speech problems. Parents as being the first caregivers, are particularly responsible for any disorders prophylaxis including speech dysfunction. As our study reveals in general parents knowledge level of the child’s speech development are mostly satisfactory. However, there are also a group of patents who could not define properly child normal or pathological speech development in preschool period. We confirm the idea of involving mass media and all child specialists (teachers, therapists in kindergartens, nursery staff, any preschool institutions and hospital) to joint measures in providing educational competence in speech development by radio and TV programs, brochures, magazines, posters, seminars and workshops for better health care.
