Full textToday's opération of large povver Systems is continuously increasing in complexity due to size growth, to high ievel of interconnections, to the use of new techniques, and to economical, political and ecological constraints. Thèse factors lead the operators to operate thèse Systems close to their limit of stability and security. The risk of instability is increasing in case of a strongïy growing power consumption. To avoid this phenomenon, the study of stability (voltage and rotor angle) is proposed in this thesis. This study is a very signtficant mean to détermine available transfer capability (ATC) in deregulated envïronment. The work of this thesis has been conducted vvith the use of the static analysis techniques and dynamic simulation vvith Matlab and Eurostag software. Thèse techniques are applied mainly in the Vietnam povver System {220 and 500 kV), the BPA test System 500 kV in USA and the Massif Central power System in France. In this work, several static analysis techniques are presented in order to estimate the stability margin and to identify the entical areas for the voltage stability. The results obtained are in conformity with the real exploitation of Vietnam povver system. Then, dynamic simulation allows studying ail the behaviors of the system for any opérations. With thèse simulations, the response of each variable of the éléments of the system is observed; the results of measurements and simulations are compared: the components most sensitive to the voltage stability are identified as well as the origins of instability (voltage or rotor angle). In the end, the eombination between the static analysis and dynamic simulation are carried out in order to take advantage from the two analyses. Under certain critical conditions, the povver system can be affected by a phenomenon of instability. This phenomenon can be avoided by applying préventive and corrective measures. In this thesis, three methods of préventive measures are presented: two classical methods and a new method. They are used to decrease the risks of voltage instability in the steady state before or after a disturbance, by using the optimal power flow techniques (OPF). A new method of corrective measure is also presented in this thesis, it is used to avoid the voltage instability by using the sensitivity of the active and reactive power to the voltage. The critical nodes, where the load must be shed, are determined by the static analysis. In the end, several solutions, to improve stability (voltage and rotor angle) and to avoid instability. Are given by using modem reguîatory devices (FACTS, load compensation, PSS)

Full textThis research reconstructs the value of the concept of securitas in Seneca's thought with the aim to show its centrality and the organic nature of its development both from a conceptual point of view and from the point of view of the history of ideas. Therefore the interior and the exterior dimensions of the notion and their mutual implications are analyzed: securitas is examined in its interior psychological dimension in the context of moral progress, subsequently the importance of the concept is taken into account in connection with social relations in the imperial context. The epistemological questions of the notion in Naturales Quaestiones are also studied in order to investigate the relationship that man entertains with the world of natural phenomena through science. Securitas was also examined within the relationship between philosophical and dramatic works (Oedipus), suggesting the presence of ethical assumptions of securitas in their inverted sense on a poetic level and allowing us to describe Seneca's poetic as a poetic of uncertainty. The research shows that the ethical aspects which focus on the interior dimension become part of relating to the outside world as well. The tense relationship with the world, which emerges from the study of the concept of securitas, can also be linked to the way Seneca deals with previous philosophical tradition and have contributed to clarify his position with respect to the Stoic tradition to which he belongs, as well as with respect to other philosophical (Lucretius, Cicero, Celsus) and ideological (Velleius Paterculus) influences which are present in his works

Full textThis thesis studies the modeling and analysis of power System containing static VAR compensators (SVC). Low-order models, calculated by Hankel singular-value truncation réduction and N4Sid dynamic identification, provide the foundation for the modeling and analysis techniques. For cases where many SVCs or FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) devices are installed in a power System, a new subsystem structure based on thèse low-order modeling techniques has been developed. The proposed low-order models allow the computation of low-order LQG-type (Linear Quadratic Gaussian Regulator) control laws, as well as low-order robust controls, which provide a better performance relative to traditional SVC controls (proportional type). Using the subsystem structure formulated in this thesis, methods for calculating decentralized controllers for power Systems hâve been conceived. In addition, through the use of structured singular values, a new robustness analysis technique has been developed which allows the détermination of stability boundaries through the calculation of closed-loop transfer functions. The theoretical approaches in this work hâve been applied to a test power system containing 11 nodes, as well as a larger 173-node test system

Full textTo maintain the voltage within specified limits, local control laws of distributed generators (DGs) reactive power (Q) with respect to their voltage (U) have been considered. This work studies the impact of Q(U) control laws on distribution feeders’voltage stability. An empirical study confirms the risk of voltage instability and highlights its dependence on control law parameters. To help distribution grid operators to choose these parameters, three methods assessing stability are formulated.First, a formal method based on discrete abstraction and bisimulation calculation is developed. The proposed approach yields precise results but with a high computational load. Then, to overcome this issue, an analytical criterion adapting Q(U) control laws response time with respect to grid parameters is formulated. Finally, a general criterion, valid in any cases, is established in order to be included in the grid codes. To conclude this work, extension to more complex cases is discussed

Full textThe aim of this work is to draw up a short-term rescheduling taking into account power flow constraints in electrical network at Electricité de France. Automatic controlloops such as LFC and AGe systems have limited action ranges. So, the operator has to restore quickly safety margins by acting on generation plannings thanks to his own technical skill. We propose a general algorithm based on the exploration of technically feasible solution graph. The solving process uses heuristics and is controlled by two lists. Arranged in ascending priority order, these lists are defined by the operator according to his intuition and bis electrical system knowledge. The first one contains the thermal and hydroelectric power plants wbich are able to be involved. The other one includes the criterions that the solution will have to verify with a maximum efficiency. As a result, we always have an effective or partial solution. The study prototype uses object-oriented programmation (C++). It is connected with sorne EDF programs and shares same datas structures. The operator can act on several parameters in order to control the prototype. Finally, our mock-up could be shortly combined with operationnal EDF systems. Moreover, it could become a reusable and extensible base for further studies

Full textThis research work is dedicated to the design and realization of a 10 GHz voltage controlled oscillator. A feasibility study of the oscillator using MEMS varactor to control the oscillation frequency is realized. First chapter presents analysis methods enabling to simulate accurately all of circuit electrical characteristics before its realization : start-up conditions, steady-state and phase noise analysis. Second chapter presents the non linear modeling of the SiGe heterojonction bipolar transistor used to design the oscillator. Second part of this chapter shows low frequency noise modeling of this transistor, since it’s the major contribution of phase noise near the carrier. Thrid Chapter is devoted to the design of the final oscillator. The different design steps using tools presented in the first chapter and models presented in the second chapter are explained. This work leads to the realization of a fixed frequency oscillator and a voltage controlled oscillator respectively reaching phase noise of -119 dBc/Hz and -115 dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz from the carrier

The study of the stability of biofuels emulsions calls attention, among other things, to the need to identify their characteristics. This need is reinforced by the difficulty of detecting biodiesel and its blends when they are out of specification, and apply the processes of biodiesel separation and purification after transesterification. The understanding of this issue could be reach from stability studies associated with thermodynamic models of liquid-liquid equilibrium (NRTL) in ternary systems, which will be the basis for modeling proposed in this paper. The research involves direct observation techniques for titration, and stability tests and tensiometry, with some changes of classical techniques. Thus, the main objective is to propose a way to identify and characterize the interfaces of emulsions formed and study the stability of the phases involved. Furthermore, it studies the introduction of alcohols as surfactants to enable the use of mixtures of fuel, even in the region of more than one phase. For development work, emulsions involving basic constituents will be combined in different proportions. The first step consists of mapping the mixtures and proportions which form emulsions, based on the equilibrium curves. Then, it is done the study of characterization and stability of these systems. With this information it is possible to map the direction of an increase in the interface tension and phase separation instability of emulsions in relation to the corresponding ternary diagrams. Finally, it proposes a strategy to estimate the thermodynamic parameters of the NRTL for the species present in the systems studied and predict the behavior of these and similar systems. This mathematical model aims to complement the experimental technique adopted for construction of the equilibrium curves, being successful

Full textLow-tension circuit breakers generally rely on the extinction of the electric arc created when the current-carrying contacts separate. The dynamics of the arc has been studied for a number of years using numerical simulations of the coupled fluid dynamics/electromagnetic governing equations. One of the objectives of this thesis is to improve numerical simulation near the wall, where there is a thin boundary layer whose accurate numerical description requires fine meshes, and hence long Computing times, unless special measures are taken. Different simulations, based on an existing code, have aided in the development of a two ragion model, with one region away from the wall and another representing the boundary layer. In the external zone, the full equations are used, but the boundary conditions at the wall are modified by the existence of the thin wall-layer. This external flow forms the outer boundary conditions for a boundary layer calculation. As part of own numerical studies, we have also compared results of simulations with those of experiments. The second topic of the thesis is the stability of an arc column. A basic arc state is perturbed and the growth or decay of the perturbations with time used to determine the stability or otherwise of that basic state. The basic state used was a simple, steady, axisymmetric arc of infinite length, but we found that, in general, to maintain such an arc steady, some means of extracting the heat generated by the arc was necessary, a requirement which was met by introducing a sink of mass at the axis. A study of such arcs, cooled by the influx from outside, showed a variety of families of different solutions, for a given pressure and electric field strength. Having selected a particular basic state, the linearised equations were solved for the normal modes and their eigenvalues used to examine stability. Different types of unstable and stable modes were found, which were interpreted in terms of magnetic diffusion, acoustics and unstable coupled modes

Full textWith the spread of deregulation, power systems are operated more and more close to their security and stability limits, and system conditions have become increasingly complex. Under this situation, blackouts occur more often, and large-scale blackouts cause enormous economic losses and social problems. Firstly, we analyze 37 important blackouts in the world from 1965 to 2005. And we classify their features in each phase, summarize their mechanism and give some recommendations for preventing the future blackouts. From the analysis, cascade overload and voltage collapse are the major incidents in the blackouts and a real-time system to prevent the blackouts is necessary. Based on the new measurement and control technologies – Wide-area measurement system (WAMS), we propose a new real-time power system stability control system. This system could provide the optimal real-time solutions based on load shedding to prevent the system instability. Load shedding, an effective method to prevent blackouts, has been widely used in power systems. Previous load-shedding plans were usually prearranged with the estimation of the system's emergency condition. However, sometimes, predesigned load shedding could not prevent blackouts in the complex and non-forecasted system conditions. We propose three real-time optimal load shedding methods and the optimal strategies which focus on the real-time non-forecasted system situation and realize both voltage stability and transient stability after load shedding. The smart home system is a system which could control the energy and keep comfort in the house at the same time. The soft load shedding, which is based on the smart home system, could realize the load shedding without switching the customer supply off. The concept of soft load shedding is then completely different from the classic load shedding

Full textThis thesis is devoted to the mathematical study of the water-waves problem concerning two- dimensional motion of an irrotational and incompressible inviscid liquid with a free surface acted only by gravity and surface tension in a highly nonlinear regime. The thesis is separated into two parts of equal importance. In the first part, we justify mathematically more accurate approximation models for the water wave problem that are commonly used in coastal oceanography to describe the propagation of large amplitude surface waves. A new two-dimensional asymptotic shallow-water extended Green-Naghdi system is derived which incorporates the arbitrary higher-order dispersive terms while preserving the full nonlinearity. A well-posedness result and a stability property is then ensured for the one-dimensional case when the bottom is flat and not flat taking into consid- eration a small e

Full textIn Aeronautics, Defense and Space, dynamic fragmentation is a process generated by extreme loadings. Among the Lagrangian approaches, classically used for the modeling of such events, we focus here on the meshless method called SPH. Unlike grid-based methods, SPH is built on a set of interpolation points disregarding any connectivity which makes it naturally well suited to handle material failure. However, standard SPH schemes suffer from instabilities questioning their accuracy and activating non-physical processes such as numerical fragmentation. A new robust SPH scheme called γ-SPH-ALE is then proposed in this work. It is built in an ALE context and includes a stabilizing low-Mach scheme inherited from Finite Volume methods. Through a nonlinear stability analysis, CFL conditions are identified on the scheme parameters. A strong mathematical background is then built ensuring the scheme conservativity, robustness, stability and consistency. To our knowledge, this type of nonlinear analysis has never been performed on a SPH-ALE scheme. Finally, the implementation of γ-SPH-ALE on various academic fragmentation test cases demonstrates particularly its capability to prevent spurious oscillations to appear in elastic waves, as well as to solve the so-called tensile instability, major issues of standard SPH methods. Also, taking advantage of GPU parallelization, these results are achieved in reduced computation times with respect to conventional CPU implementations

The present work proposes an extended model representing part of a huge aluminum industry load for voltage stability investigations in time domain. The efforts were concentrated in the expansion of the industrial power distribution system model including explicit representation of the main transformers, capacitors, feeders and induction motors. The extended model is validated through a comparison between computer simulation results and the industry/power system utility recordings. A real sequence of events which took place in the Brazilian North Power System in the year of 2002 causing a complete industry breakdown (loss of bulk supply) was considered here for this purpose.

Full textThis thesis presents a new Linear Voltage Stabilization System (LVSS) specially designed for µ-hybrid vehicles using the Stop-Start function. The LVSS stabilizes the battery voltage during the start-up of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) limiting the start-up current using parallels MOSFETs working in linear mode. A prototype was developed and tested in a car. Results have shown the battery voltage properly stabilized limiting the start-up current. Furthermore the proposed solution does not impact on the overall performance of the Stop-Start. Main advantages are its small volume, low price and the fact that there is no EMC perturbation as transistors work in linear mode

Full textElectrical loads and small power sources, integrated through low voltage distribution feeders, managed in such a way to behave as one controllable entity within in a power system, and with the ability to operate connected or non-connected to the conventional power system is a new kind of electrical system known as Microgrid. This thesis addresses the problem related to dynamic stability of island Microgrids with autonomous control of frequency and voltage. The Microgrids analyzed are composed of combinations of conventional and alternative power sources that do not generate electricity naturally in 50 or 60 Hz, therefore inverters are needed to provide AC network interface. The analysis is performed in the state space with methodologies based on theories involving the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the state matrix. For this, state-space models are developed for each component of Microgrid, maintaining a compromise between accuracy and complexity. The analytical nature of this study allows investigating the relationship between the stability of Microgrid and parameters of the system, such as controller gains, network design, generation architectures, among others. Complementary sensitivity analyzes of eigenvalues to the electrical parameters of the system allow us to infer the dynamic behavior of various configurations of Microgrids, obtaining important conclusions on the matter. The analytical results are verified by computer simulation using the platform Simulink/Matlab®.

Full textThis dissertation was devoted to the study of multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MTDC) networks. The main contributions were in the field of nonlinear automatic control, applied to power systems, power electronics and renewable energy sources. The research work was started with the intention of filling some gaps between the theory and the practice, in particular: 1) to investigate various control approaches for the purpose of improving the performance of MTDC systems; 2) to establish connections between existing empirical control design and theoretical analysis; 3) to improve the understanding of the multi-time-scale behavior of MTDC systems characterized by the presence of slow and fast transients in response to external disturbances. As a consequence, this thesis work can be put into three areas, namely nonlinear control design of MTDC systems, analysis of MTDC system's dynamic behaviors and application of MTDC systems for frequency control of AC systems
