Abstract:
It is good to see innovations in housing design being applied to the private sector; the ultimate test of any new idea is that someone should want to invest in it. All too often in the past any experimentation in housing design was mainly confined to the public sector. Lack of ‘market testing’ was one of the main reasons why brave experiments sometimes went horribly wrong. All through those years of experimentation, between say 1955 and 1975, with the exception of Eric Lyons' Span housing, architects found fertile ground in public sector – local authority – commissions. It is only now, with loads of government encouragement, that major developers are beginning to sponsor new ideas in design, in higher density, ‘joined up’ housing.

Abstract:
The Eminent British Novelist and Literary critic David Lodge was interviewed in 1984 by Chris Walsh, then a lecturer in English at St Mary's Teachers Training College, now St Mary's University, Twickenham, London. Lodge spoke about his background—his Catholic education and its influence on him, his early reading of Graham Greene and Evelyn Waugh—and about literary criticism and fiction. The interview was published in the literary magazine Strawberry Fare, produced by the English department at St Mary's, which is situated on Strawberry Hill. During its short run, from 1981 to 1989, Strawberry Fare published fascinating interviews with leading literary figures, including, in addition to Lodge, Tom Stoppard, Seamus Heaney, Beryl Bainbridge, and others. Today copies of the journal are extremely scarce. The only complete runs appear to be in the British Library (call number ZK.9.a.41) and in the archives of St Mary's.

Abstract:
The urgent need for new housing in south-east England is likely to be met by development on what are often ‘brownfield’ sites. Buschow Henley's scheme was the winning entry for an ideas competition to stimulate new ideas leading to the exemplary development of such a site. With the exception of the opening statement and the competition background, this is a much shortened version of the original submission.

Miller, H. G. "A geophysical interpretation of the onshore and offshore geology of the southern Avalon Terrane, Newfoundland." Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences 24, no. 1 (January 1, 1987): 60–69. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/e87-006.

Abstract:
This paper presents new land and underwater gravity data for the southern portion of the Avalon Terrane of Newfoundland. These gravity data are combined with existing airborne and marine magnetic data to produce a detailed geophysical interpretation of the geology of the southern Avalon Peninsula and the adjacent portions of Placentia and St. Mary's bays.Qualitative interpretation of the geophysical data in conjunction with the known geology reveals that the major faults previously mapped only on land and inferred beneath St. Mary's Bay can be traced offshore geophysically. In addition, the previously unknown offshore limits of a small sedimentary basin in the southeast part of the area can be delineated.Quantitative modelling demonstrates that (1) Precambrian mafic to ultramafic rocks underlie the whole area, (2) thrust faulting in the St. Mary's Peninsula and elsewhere has led to the juxtaposition of Bull Arm volcanic rocks over Harbour Main volcanic rocks, and (3) the evolution of the area may be explained by a combination of earlier volcanic island and extensional models. The mapping has also revealed the presence of previously unknown northwest–southeast lineations in the geophysical patterns, which may be related to the late wrench faulting.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a detailed analysis of surviving paintwork on the chancel arch, the carved animal heads and the figurative panel in the west porch at the Anglo-Saxon church of St Mary, Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, UK. The context of the polychromy in relation to the ninth-century fabric of the church is assessed. The detailed results of the technical analysis are presented. The original scheme of painted decoration is described, including the newly discovered plant scroll painted on the arch. The results of the examination are evaluated, setting the polychrome decoration of the ninth-century church into its contemporary context in England and on the Continent, with special regard to both the technical and the artistic aspects.

Abstract:
St Mary's Abbey, York was one of the richest Benedictine monasteries in the country and its buildings reflected its wealth and status. The quality of its architectural remains is of the highest order, and the collection of medieval sculpture from the site is outstanding. Indeed, the set of life-size column-figures brought to light in 1829 must count as one of the most exciting discoveries ever made in the field of the history of sculpture in this country. Nor is the later history of the site any less interesting. At the Dissolution it became the seat of the King's Council in the North and acquired the name of King's Manor, which part of the complex retains to this day. The principal monastic buildings came down within a few years, and their demolition can be followed in considerable detail, as we shall see; but the centuries of Crown ownership prevented the division of the property until the nineteenth century, and it remains one of the best-preserved urban (albeit extra-mural) monastic precincts in Britain.

Abstract:
Three mysids, Erythrops erythropthalma, Mysis stenolepis, and Neomysis americana occurred in the zooplankton of the Bay of Fundy and adjacent waters from 1973 through 1981. Erythrops erythropthalma occurred in low numbers in scattered areas, such as the mouth of Passamaquoddy Bay, Grand Manan Channel, the coast of Maine, and off St. Mary's Bay and southwest Nova Scotia. Mysis stenolepis was taken rarely and only in the shallower stations near the coast and in the inner Bay of Fundy. Neomysis americana was the most abundant mysid and the most widespread in its distribution. Populations were found at the head of the Bay of Fundy and in St. Mary's Bay. Seasonally, N. americana was least abundant in the spring, with numbers and area of distribution increasing in the summer and fall. The life history pattern of N. americana in the inner Bay of Fundy was the same as that found in other areas nearby. It rarely occurred in depths greater than 75 m and was more abundant in the zooplankton at night than during the day. Because of the great abundance of N. americana in the inner Bay of Fundy and St. Mary's Bay, it provides an excellent food source for larval and adult fish in these areas.

Abstract:
In 1834 the rector of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Burlington, New Jersey desired to place a cross atop his newly-refurbished sanctuary. No ordinary rector, George Washington Doane also served as the Episcopal bishop of New Jersey. Shortly after taking charge of St. Mary's in 1833, he and his vestry had decided to renovate their old church, and their ambitious new design featured a cruciform plan with Greek details, including a pediment adorned with lotus leaves and a tower “derived from that built at Athens… commonly called the Tower of the Winds.” But when Doane carried out the plans for “an enriched Greek Cross” to be mounted on the roof, the community stood aghast. A local Presbyterian minister chronicled the confrontation, and he began by asserting that most of St. Mary's vestrymen had originally approved the designs without “noticing the Cross at the time.” The project was thus completed, and to the vestry's “great surprise, as well as that of many in the community, of all ‘denominations’—lo! a Cross made quite a Catholic appearance on the apex of the pediment!” Controversy arose, “both in the Vestry and out of it,” and “after a very warm meeting, one of the Vestry shortly after declared that unless the Cross was taken down very soon, it should be pulled down.”

Abstract:
Attendance patterns of common murres (Uria aalge) at Cape St. Mary's, Newfoundland, were observed during hatching to post-fledging periods of 1980 to 1984. Six study plots on breeding ledges (ca. 450 birds total) and a "club" on the water were monitored for seasonal fluctuations in numbers attending. Attendance on ledges was similar between years, being relatively stable from hatching through to median fledging, and declining steadily thereafter. Attendance at the club usually peaked between median hatching and fledging, then declined rapidly during the fledging period. Numbers of murres attending neighboring study plots were often significantly correlated, but correlations were much weaker between distant plots. There were few significant correlations between attendance and wind speed or tidal oscillations in any year of study. Numbers of murres attending individual study plots varied significantly between years; four declined, one increased, and one showed no significant change. Overall, there was a small decline in total numbers of murres attending all study plots between 1980 and 1984.

Abstract:
A transcript survives of the oath sworn in 1465 by the lay sacristan of the collegiate church of St Mary at Warwick on the occasion of his taking office. His duties are spelled out in detail, and include the striking requirement that he spend each night in the sacristy for the better security of the treasures. This paper prints the oath and aims to place it in its institutional context. The medieval sacristy at Warwick survives and details of the oath illuminate details of the architecture. Similar first-floor vestries are known elsewhere, and the suggestion is made that some other churches might also have had inhabited sacristies.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The pattern of glaciation on the Avalon Peninsula has been established through study of geomorphic features, striations, and erratic provenance. Three phases in a continuum of glaciation are recognized. The initial phase involved the expansion of ice from several centres. Ice thickness and extent reached a maximum during the subsequent Phase 2 event, correlated with the Late Wisconsinan. Lowered sea level permitted the development of the St. Mary's Bay ice centre. Ice from the Newfoundland mainland coalesced with Avalon Peninsula ice in Placentia Bay, on the Isthmus, and in Trinity Bay. Rising sea level, triggered by the retreat of Laurentide ice in Labrador, resulted in destabilization of the St. Mary's Bay ice cap, marking Phase 3. Final deglaciation of the Avalon Peninsula began before 10,100 ± 250 BP. The Avalon Peninsula ice caps were controlled by regional and hemispheric events, and by the response of the Lauren- tide glaciers.
