Cannane, Mary, and n/a. "Trinity : a study of the amalgamation of St. Mary's College and Marist Brothers' St. Joseph's High School Lismore 1965-1985." University of Canberra. Education, 1985. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060626.125829.

Full text
Abstract:
The amalagamation of St. Mary's College and St. Joseph's High School, Lismore was a process that began in 1965 when a decision was made to combine Senior classes for the first Higher School Certificate curriculum. There was no thought of amalgamation in 1965 but the decision made then lead to the developments of 1977. Increasing enrolments and the need for a building programme set the scene for a merger of Junior classes and the introduction of coeducation throughout the schools. This process extended from 1977 to 1981. It was a period of conflict and resistance to change but it laid the foundation for the complete amalgamation of the schools to form Trinity Catholic College in 1985. The amalgamation process provides a study of decision-making in a Catholic school context. Changes in the Church, Catholic schools and Religious Orders are reflected in the changes in the way that decisions were made at the three key-points in the story. The study draws attention to the fact that in amalgamations of schools much of the planning is done in terms of the present schools rather than for the new school which is always twice as large and much more complex. The non-educational aspects of amalgamation are also considered because they are a time-consuming but important part of the planning. This study shows the importance of rituals in laying the old schools to rest so that the new school may come into being. A visible indication that things are different is essential when the students, staff and buildings remain as they had been. Since amalgamations are becoming more common as student numbers decline some lessons learned over the past twenty years are recorded so that others may benefit from them.

Macdonell, Cameron. "Haunted by the gothic: deconstructing the new St. Mary's Anglican church, Walkerville, Ontario." Thesis, McGill University, 2013. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=114416.

Full text
Abstract:
Ralph Adams Cram (1863–1942) was among the rare Gothicists who practiced both Gothic architecture and literature. He designed several Gothic-Revival churches and campuses across North America, and he wrote a book of Gothic ghost stories in 1895, calling the collection Black Spirits and White. Traditionally, scholars have assumed that the discourses of modern, Anglo-Gothic architecture and literature parted company after the 1830s. Scholars have based that assumption on two interrelated arguments. First, the Victorian Gothic novel evolved beyond the distinctly medieval; whereas, Victorian Gothic architects became rigorously attentive to structural and cultural principles of the Middle Ages. Second, and more importantly, even though architecture has been thematic for Gothic literature, scholars of the genre have concentrated on the domesticity of haunted houses. This has not been as problematic for scholars of Georgian Gothic architecture, where Gothic details plastered over domestic architecture; Victorian Gothic architects, however, expressed their principles most effectively through church building. The modern Gothic church, as the true house of God, is supposed to have exorcized any confusion with the domestic architecture of man, providing sanctuary from the haunting conditions of a secular, urban-industrial, modern world.Ralph Adams Cram complicates that assumption. In the darkest moments of his despair, Cram designed churches that were not resurrected Gothic beauties, but spectral remnants of a murdered past beyond his powers to avenge. His Gothic literature expressed that impotent horror, addressing several houses that modernity, having murdered the medieval past, haunted. So did the new St. Mary's Anglican Church of Walkerville, Ontario. Using the hauntological strategies of Jacques Derrida, this project deconstructs the Walkerville church to solicit the withered horror of a spectral hand haunting the Anglican house of God. Cram designed the Walkerville church for Edward Chandler Walker, de facto king of Walkerville, who was secretly dying of syphilis. Cram encrypted Edward's illness in the Walkerville church through the withered limb of a biblical leper. Edward's withered "hand" was then visualized through the spreading fingers of the letter "k," its grammatological mark silently concealed and revealed in the Gothick moniker that its structural, spatial, social, and semiotic languages declare to the modern world. Ultimately, the Walkerville church calls for a Grail Knight's arrival, one whose holy hand can end the suffering of the Fisher King, Edward Walker—and, by extension, a knight who might end the dark night of decadent modernity. Yet will the Grail Knight ever arrive?

Nelson, David A. "Subadult loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) behavior in St. Mary's entrance channel, Georgia, United States." W&M ScholarWorks, 1996. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539616790.

Full text
Abstract:
A study of channel utilization and behavior of subadult loggerhead turtles was conducted in the St. Mary's River entrance channel area, Georgia. A total of 38 loggerheads were captured by trawling and instrumented with radio and depth sensitive sonic tags from April to November 1993. Turtles were monitored for 6 to 36 hours continuously for approximately 30 days in the spring (13), summer (13), and fall (14). On a daily basis turtles generally confined their diving activity to one location for one to twelve hours in 10 to 20 m water depths then moved 1 to 5 kilometers to a new location. Overall the turtles spent only a small percent of time in/near the channel. Duration of diving variables varied widely among and between individuals. The loggerhead turtles spent a small percent of time and short durations at the sea surface and large percent of time and long durations associated with the sea floor. A turtle would typically surface 1-4 times per hour. In general, bottom durations, submergence durations, and dive cycle durations were longer at night than during the day, with twilight durations intermediate between the two. Turtles surfaced more frequently during the day than at night. No day/night pattern was observed for surface duration, descent duration, ascent duration, ascent rate, and descent rate. Ascent duration was longer and ascent rate slower than descent duration and descent rate, respectively. Mean surface durations were greater in the spring than summer and fall. Surface/submergence frequency was less in the fall than in spring and summer. Bottom durations, submergence durations, and dive cycle durations were longer in the fall than in the spring or summer. Surface durations, descent durations, ascent durations, ascent rates, and descent rates did not differ seasonally. In the spring, summer, and fall loggerhead turtles spent most of their time on the sea floor outside the channel, dove more actively during the day than at night, and remained in one location for up to 12 hours at 10-20 m water depths.

Booth, Kaylene Lucinda. "A study of the impact of the St. Mary's Development and Care Centre on communities in Grahamstown." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1020369.

Full text
Abstract:
The study is made in an attempt to evaluate a Non-Profit Organisation established 30 years ago. The organisation is called The St. Mary’s Development and Care Centre. This centre, amongst others, was established in 1982 by a true humanitarian, Mrs Thelma Henderson, and has since had more than 2250 children and lots more families in its care. The research aims to explore and evaluate the impact that the centre has had on the families and communities in Grahamstown. The evaluation is done as part of the current manager’s strategy to assess the strengths of the organisation and to build on the efficacy of the organisation. The researcher understands impact as any change whether positive or negative. This, from a social science perspective, is experienced by the person on a personal level and the effects in different families cannot be measured with a universal measure. Theory proves that because people are at varying levels of development, they therefore experience change and thus impact, differently. With the use of the grounded theory method comprising of systematic, inductive and comparative approaches for conducting inquiry for the purpose of constructing theory (Bryant & Charmaz 2007: 1) the research found that people have experienced change at different levels. This information, triangulated against previous research, validated the claims that child sponsorship at an NGO level indeed has benefits for the children involved in their programs. Therefore this evaluation paper draws the conclusion through similarities found and qualitative personal views that the St. Mary’s Development and Care Centre has indeed had an impact on the Grahamstown community.

Rawson, Helen C. "Treasures of the University : an examination of the identification, presentation and responses to artefacts of significance at the University of St Andrews, from 1410 to the mid-19th century, with an additional consideration of the development of the portrait collection to the early 21st century." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/990.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its foundation between 1410 and 1414 the University of St Andrews has acquired what can be considered to be ‘artefacts of significance’. This somewhat nebulous phrase is used to denote items that have, for a variety of reasons, been deemed to have some special import by the University, and have been displayed or otherwise presented in a context in which this status has been made apparent. The types of artefacts in which particular meaning has been vested during the centuries under consideration include items of silver and gold (including the maces, sacramental vessels of the Collegiate Church of St Salvator, collegiate plate and relics of the Silver Arrow archery competition); church and college furnishings; artworks (particularly portraits); sculpture; and ethnographic specimens and other items described in University records as ‘curiosities’ held in the University Library from c. 1700-1838. The identification of particular artefacts as significant for certain reasons in certain periods, and their presentation and display, may to some extent reflect the University's values, preoccupations and aspirations in these periods, and, to some degree, its identity. Consciously or subconsciously, the objects can be employed or operate as signifiers of meaning, representing or reflecting matters such as the status, authority and history of the University, its breadth of learning and its interest and influence in spheres from science, art and world cultures to national affairs. This thesis provides a comprehensive examination of the growth and development of the University's holdings of 'artefacts of significance' from its foundation to the mid-19th century, and in some cases (especially portraits) beyond this date. It also offers insights into how the University viewed and presented these items and what this reveals about the University of St Andrews, its identity, which changed and developed as the living institution evolved, and the impressions that it wished to project.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1918, Archbishop Shaw invited the Texas Catholic religious order, Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, to New Orleans to manage the St. Louis Cathedral and its filial parish for Southern Italians, St. Mary’s Church. This thesis will look at the personalities and preferentialism that affected this early 20th century transfer of religious power from secular priests to a religious order. Comparing the language used by Archbishop Shaw in correspondence with Oblate Fathers with the language he used with his secular priests will determine that Shaw displayed favoritism in his decision to invite the Oblates. This decision was affected by four primary factors: Shaw’s prior relationship with the Oblates as Bishop of San Antonio, his concerns with archdiocesan finances, his perceived threat of encroaching Protestantism, and politics of discontent amongst his secular clergy. Shaw’s distinct idealistic pragmatism shows the dynamic nature of the institution of the Catholic Church in Louisiana.

Kerrison, Robert Stephen. "Promoting uptake of flexible sigmoidoscopy 'bowel scope' screening at St Mark's Hospital in London." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10046000/.

Full text
Abstract:
In March 2013, NHS England extended its national bowel cancer screening programme to include once-only flexible sigmoidoscopy (‘bowel scope’) screening for men and women aged 55. Since roll-out of the programme began, uptake has been low and inequitable, with people living in the most deprived areas being the least likely to take part in screening. This thesis examines uptake at St Mark’s Hospital, a centre which serves a socioeconomically diverse population with below average uptake, and goes on to describe the development and evaluation of an intervention targeted at those who do not participate. Study 1 identifies and describes possible targets for intervention. The results of the study informed the design of a self-referral reminder letter and theory-based information leaflet to be sent to individuals who did not attend bowel scope screening (BSS) within one year of their original invitation. Study 2 describes a test of the intervention’s feasibility, with results demonstrating its potential to increase BSS uptake. Study 3 examines the effectiveness of the reminder letter and theory-based leaflet by comparing uptake against appropriate controls, namely: no reminder or the designed reminder letter sent with the standard information booklet used by the National Health Service. The results of the randomised controlled trial (RCT) demonstrate that uptake was significantly higher among the two groups receiving the reminder, with the group receiving the theory-based leaflet showing the highest rate of uptake. In Study 4, the materials were re-sent to those who had not attended BSS within 24 months of their initial invitation. The results of this extension to the RCT corroborate the outcome of the first reminder. This series of studies demonstrates the usefulness of additional reminders in the BSS programme, which is discussed alongside other implications for policy in the discussion of this thesis.

Abstract:
The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest stone fortification on the North American mainland, a unique site that integrates Florida’s Spanish colonial past with American Indian narratives. A complete history of this fortification from its origins to its management under the National Park Service has not yet been written. During the Spanish colonial era, the Indian mission system complemented the defensive work of the fort until imperial skirmishes led to the demise of the Florida Indian. During the nineteenth century, Indian prisoners put a new American Empire on display while the fort transformed into a tourist destination. The Castillo became an American site, and eventually a National Monument, where visitors lionized Spanish explorers and often overlooked other players in fort history. This thesis looks at the threads of Spanish and Indian history at the fort and how they have or have not been interpreted into the twenty-first century.

Abstract:
Pre-print
Many universities and colleges around the world have done extensive surveys of their campus built heritage resources. A detailed description and accounting of a campus's built heritage, landscape heritage and archaeology, are often used for historic preservation planning, and sustaining built culture is also an important aspect of campus master planning of future buildings. Such institutions of higher education have deep historical roots, in Europe it is not uncommon for buildings to be dated prior to the sixteenth century. In countries where European colonies were established, institutions of higher education often date to the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Once students have arrived at their chosen campus, however, except for perhaps the first week orientation rituals, do the students actually develop ties to their campus built heritage? This research investigates the knowledge students possess of their respective campus built heritage and the importance of built heritage as a legacy to them. Two institutions are included in this study in an effort of draw comparative assessments. A student questionnaire was administered at Rhodes University in South Africa and St. Mary's College of Maryland in the United States during April 2008. Results indicate students on both campuses place positive intrinsic value on their respective campus built heritage. Just over half (52%) of Rhodes students and about 68% of St. Mary's students were willing to pay some positive amount to protect campus built heritage. Empirical probit model results combining the data from both institutions found that current student knowledge of their respective campus built heritage did not positively relate to the value they place on preservation, even though the visual identity was significant for students and influenced their decision to attend the particular institution. The lack of significance regarding a racial variable coefficient estimate suggests that the use of an institution's visual identity in terms of built heritage may have important marketing implications, particularly in cases where universities or colleges are trying to attract students from more diverse backgrounds. We found no significant relationships between willingness to pay to preserve an institution's built heritage and the demographic variables included in our empirical model. Fundraising data analysis includes positive willingness to pay for conserving built heritage, yet funding for new construction was not significant.

Gordon, Gary (Gary Adrian). "Four Evening Service Settings of Joel Martinson: An American's Contribution to Anglican Evensong Repertoire." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2019. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1505135/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Evening Service settings of great British composers like Charles Stanford, A. Herbert Brewer, Charles Wood and Herbert Howells are well known and performed often throughout the world. However, little is known about the body of settings created by American composers. There are currently approximately 75 American composers dating from 1890 to the present, with Evening Service settings in print. Joel Martinson, based in Dallas, Texas, is an American composer, church musician, concert organist, and presenter. Although Martinson has composed four Evening Service settings (Evening Service for the St. Mark's School 1996, Evening Service for the Incarnation 2000, Evening Service for Church of the Nativity 2002, and Evening Service for the Transfiguration 2015), these works are not widely known outside of Dallas and small Anglican circles, nor is the value of his contributions to Anglican Evensong repertoire recognized. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Martinson's four settings make a valuable American contribution to Anglican repertoire through his neo-classical style and creative counterpoint. The four settings are modern and challenging but remain approachable for both choir and audience.

Cailteau, Christelle. "Métrologie des pressions partielles de gaz (CO2 et CH4) à l'équilibre avec les eaux de formation des marnes de Bure (Meuse - Hte Marne, France) et Mont Terri (St Ursanne, Suisse) : interprétation des mécanismes de transfert de gaz après forage." Thesis, Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy, INPL, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008INPL030N/document.

Abstract:
An infrared sensor (IRTF) and an innovative Raman optical bench were implemented and developed in underground laboratories to improve our knowledge about migration mechanisms of dissolved gases (CO2 and CH4). This study is focussed on the characterisation of the initial state of the porewater of Callovo-Oxfordian marl (Bure) and Opalinus Clay (Mt Terri Middle Jurassic). These sensors are integrated into experimental devices of gas-equilibration test developed by Andra (PAC) to follow the gaseous phase behaviour in contact with the rock formation through a borehole drilled and maintained in anaerobic conditions, and initially filled with pure argon. These in situ sensors allow, on line quantitative analysis of gases released by the rock formation at low bulk pressure (<1.3 bar). Quantitative models were developed to transform peak intensities in partial pressures of gas. They give mean absolute relative errors about 1.66 % for pCO2 (mbar.m) and 1.37 % for pCH4 (mbar.m). Three years of IR monitoring of one borehole on the site of Mt Terri and two boreholes on the site of Bure (facies C2b1 and C2d) have been led. CH4 transfer curves were modelled by diffusion-advection. CH4 concentration in porewater from non-perturbed rock formation is estimated from all the experiments: concentrations between 3.06 and 14.23 mg.L-1 was obtained for Opalinus Clay, between 0.36 and 1.28 mg.L-1 for C2d facies and between 0.56 and 1.55 mg.L-1 for C2b1 facies in Callovo-Oxfordian marls of Bure. Gas/rock/water balance governs pCO2 after drilling, whereas diffusion/advection laws explain CO2 long-term profiles. An intra-formational origin of the organic gases can be proposed

Abstract:
The Bronx Cocked Back And Smoking is a collection of multifarious prose performances recounting the historical, personal, social, political and cultural constructs of a city birthed by violence. This body of work is accompanied by video, audio, photography, and theatre performance texts. St. Mary’s Housing project, in the Bronx, is the foundation where most of this literary work takes place. The modern day Griot (storyteller) is a Poet, guiding his audience through the social inequalities and disparities that plague St. Mary’s community. The Poet shares personal traumatic insights while simultaneously utilizing writing as a form of survival to the conditions of the Bronx. This multi-platform performance highlights the metaphorical and physical concerns with the cycle of violence. This question is answered through the Poet’s choice by selecting the pen over the gun.

Electronic Thesis or Diss., Toulon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020TOUL0011.

Full text
Abstract:
Mediterranean Sea (MS) is a semi-enclosed sea divided into two basins: the Occidental and the Oriental basins. The two studied Mediterranean sites in this thesis are located respectively at N-W of MS and S-E of France for Toulon Bay and at E of MS, Lebanon for St-Georges Bay. They both host high population density especially along the coast and therefore exposed to numerous anthropogenic activities (e.g. tourism, marine transport, aquaculture, wastewater discharge, and industrial activities) contaminating the surrounding environment (water column, sediment, biota …) with different contaminants such as trace metals (TM). In addition, each site is characterized by the presence of an urbanized river: le Las (France) and Beirut River (Lebanon). Sediments are considered as a secondary source of contamination due to biogeochemical processes influencing TM mobility in the sediments. In this context, the objectives of this thesis are (1) to investigate TM contamination along the rivers and in bays; (2) to elucidate the influence of early diagenesis on TM mobility; and (3) to characterize organic matter at both sites. For all the above, superficial sediments, sediment cores, superficial waters and pore waters were collected along the two rivers and at both sites during the period 2016-2018. Sediments and waters samples were analyzed for main physical parameters, nutrients, organic carbon (dissolved and particulate) and major/ trace elements. Results showed that early diagenesis processes strongly control TM mobility in the sediments. In addition, the results confirmed that Toulon bay is strongly contaminated due to the 2nd World War and the present bay activities. The Las River inputs do not contribute and affect significantly the sediments of Toulon Bay. As for St-Georges Bay, we found that it has been impacted by several activities (industrial effluents discharged without treatment, runoff from agricultural zone) transported by Beirut River and/or by direct inputs (coastal landfill)
