Abstract:
ABSTRACT In this study, corrosion monitoring was carried out in the friction welded joint of low carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel (SS 202) simulated in a biological solution. This study aims to calculate the corrosion rate of friction welding joints of low carbon steel and SS 202 and evaluate the surface roughness that occurs in the welding zone. From the results of welded joints, corrosion test samples were made by representing the welding zone. Prior to immersion, the surface of the sample was cleaned and polished before immersion using a 0.9wt.% NaCl electrolyte solution. Experiments were run at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of each sample. The results showed that the corrosion rate of friction welding joints for low carbon steel and SS 202, the highest was 0.0167 mm/year, and the lowest was 0.0127 mm/year. At the same time, the welded joint area that has the highest surface roughness occurs in the plasticized zone. It was concluded that the entire welding zone showed uniform corrosion potential except for the plasticized zone, which showed galvanic corrosion behavior.

Abstract:
Stainless steel (SS) is one of the most commonly used metallic food contact materials. It may be classified based on its microstructure whether ferritic, austenitic, martensitic, duplex or precipitation hardened. Austenitic SS, among mentioned grades, has the largest contribution to market due to its numerous industrial and domestic applications. In this study, the corrosion behavior of AISI 202 SS – a cheaper grade of stainless steel, in three different solution temperatures of citric acid was investigated using different electrochemical techniques such as open-circuit potential (OCP) measurements, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results were compared to that obtained from conventional AISI 304 SS. OCP, polarization and impedance measurements agreed that AISI 202 SS has comparable resistance to that of AISI 304 SS in citric acid at ambient temperature and at 50 °C. At 70 °C, results of OCP measurements suggest that AISI 304 SS exhibited greater performance as indicated by more positive OCP values in the designated solution. EIS results indicate that the two alloys have identical corrosion resistance even at 70 °C as indicated by their comparable polarization resistance (Rp). The corrosion mechanism in both alloys is charge-transfer controlled as indicated by depressed semi-circular appearance of the generated Nyquist plots. The values of corrosion current densities (icorr) extracted from polarization curves indicate that the initial corrosion rates were higher in AISI 304 than AISI 202 SS suggesting that formation of more protective film may have occurred on the former alloy.

Abstract:
Abstract Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by an exocrine glands epithelium injury with dense lymphocytic infiltrates, mainly composed of activated T and B cells, involvement of the peripheral nervous, pulmonary, blood, kidney, skin, and joint. Present at the interface of genetic and environmental risk factors, histone acetylation is suspected to play a key role in SS. To clarify this point, we investigated the expression of histone deacetylases (HDACs1–10) and histone acetyltransferase (HAT-p300 CREEBP PCAF) by real time PCR in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from SS patients. Elisa measured HDACs\HATs and histone H3/ H4 acetylation activity. Flow Cytometry and western blot verified histone acetylation level. The expression of HDACs1-10, p300, CREEBP and PCAF in PBMCs from SS patients was decreased in mRNA comparison with healthy controls (HCs). Total histone acetylation was reduced in PBMCs from SS patients, while no difference was observed in histone deacetylation. The extent of total histone H3, but not H4, acetylation in PBMCs from SS patients was decreased compared to that in HCs. An altered balance between HDAC and HAT activity was found in SS PBMCs. As a consequence, part of the pathogenic mechanisms in SS may be linked to epigenetic modifications, thus opening new therapeutic perspectives in SS.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Manual systematic literature reviews are becoming increasingly challenging due to the sharp rise in publications. The primary objective of this literature review was to compare manual and computer software using artificial intelligence retrieval of publications on the cutaneous manifestations of primary SS, but we also evaluated the prevalence of cutaneous manifestations in primary SS. Methods We compared manual searching and searching with the in-house computer software BIbliography BOT (BIBOT) designed for article retrieval and analysis. Both methods were used for a systematic literature review on a complex topic, i.e. the cutaneous manifestations of primary SS. Reproducibility was estimated by computing Cohen’s κ coefficients and was interpreted as follows: slight, 0–0.20; fair, 0.21–0.40; moderate, 0.41–0.60; substantial, 0.61–0.80; and almost perfect, 0.81–1. Results The manual search retrieved 855 articles and BIBOT 1042 articles. In all, 202 articles were then selected by applying exclusion criteria. Among them, 155 were retrieved by both methods, 33 by manual search only, and 14 by BIBOT only. Reliability (κ = 0.84) was almost perfect. Further selection was performed by reading the 202 articles. Cohort sizes and the nature and prevalence of cutaneous manifestations varied across publications. In all, we found 52 cutaneous manifestations reported in primary SS patients. The most described ones were cutaneous vasculitis (561 patients), xerosis (651 patients) and annular erythema (215 patients). Conclusion Among the final selection of 202 articles, 155/202 (77%) were found by the two methods but BIBOT was faster and automatically classified the articles in a chart. Combining the two methods retrieved the largest number of publications.

Abstract:
The pitting corrosion behavior of AISI 202 stainless steel (SS) – a low-nickel, austenitic SS grade, was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique complemented by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). From the starting potential, the current density decreases and changes its sign at the corrosion potential (Ecorr). The anodic response exhibits a well-defined anodic peak followed by a passive region. A noticeable increase in the anodic current density was observed after reaching the breakdown potential (Eb). The second anodic peak which may be attributed to onset of oxygen evolution was also observed. Moreover, the cyclic voltammograms revealed that hysteresis loop is absent for all the studied concentrations, indicating that AISI 202 SS in citric acid is highly resistant to pitting corrosion as also supported by the results of SEM. It was found out that the critical current density (icrit) increases with increasing citric acid concentration.

Abstract:
Welded joints of dissimilar stainless steel sheets have many industrial applications due to their cost effectiveness, light-weight, and high efficiency. Thin austenitic stainless steel sheets of different thicknesses are extensively used in the automation industry. Conventional welding techniques due to their high heat input and high spatters have always posed problems such as burn-through and distortion for welding these joints of thin austenitic steels. The CMT welding technique is effectively used for the joining of thin sheets due to its characteristics of lower distortion rate and low heat input. In this research work, austenitic stainless steels of grade SS 202 and SS 304 of thickness 1.2 mm and 2 mm respectively were welded by CMT welding technique and studied the mechanical characteristics of dissimilar stainless steel joints. Taguchi L9 optimization technique was used to find the optimized process variables for obtaining the maximum tensile strength. The maximum tensile strength of dissimilar joint welded at 115 A current, 4 mm/s welding speed, and 10% arc length correction factor was found to be 291 MPa. The maximum micro-hardness value of the weld zone was achieved and the lower value was observed in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was utilized to detect the residual stresses of the welded joint. The residual stress was observed in compressive nature in the weld zone and base plate and of tensile nature in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). CMT welding process can produce high strength dissimilar austenitic steel joints of different thicknesses.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective/Scope Amine Regenerator column is in operation since 1980 and severe internal corrosion / erosion observed since 2000 and subsequent local shell course replacement in 2015 and 2017 were done. Therefore, to avoid frequent maintenance and repair cost and to ensure long-term measure of integrity and availability of the equipment, it was concluded to replace the existing CS column with enhanced metallurgy Methods, Procedures, Process The convectional approach of replacing the full column with CS +SS 3mm clad material which typically take around 12 month schedule for fabrication activities in dedicated shutdown in 2021. In addition, this replacement was planned to include replacement of full internals of amine column, existing foundation, pipe support and platform. Moreover, the execution strategy planned to be through FEED/EPC. However, looking for enhanced metallurgy and studying the local market stock of raw material and manufacturer have a big role to carry out the replacement job in planned shutdown in 2020 and within planned budget. Results, Observations & Conclusions The solution in going with solid SS vessel instead of clad will not only improve integrity but also will lead to enhanced schedule into 6.5 months and it is the most commercially attractive option. Moreover, going with solid SS material will reduce the fabrication time and avoid the issues associated with cladded materials and the requirements of the NDT due to welding job. In addition, it was planned to replace partially the column internals after reviewing the inspection history instead of replacing them fully. Further, the column and column internals procurement were accomplish with in in-house resources. The installation job of column, column internals, and foundation carried out within available planed June 2020 shutdown. The development of execution strategy/in-house engineering led to avoid of 35-days unit 2021 shutdown. Also, achieving direct cost saving of USD 1 million in procurement of Column and Column Internal from the planned budget. Further, the availability of SS solid material in UAE ex-stock and local manufacturer, were considered in minimizing the transportation and delivery schedule. Novel/Additive Information The column replacement was the solution to tackle the repetitive corrosion/ thickness loss failures in the vessel. The way forward of replacing full column with SS solid material will improve integrity, enhanced delivery schedule, commercially it is an attractive option and has direct support to ADNOC ICV strategy. Hence, this job will avoid the dedicated 35 days in 2021 shutdown and accordingly the revenues losses of OPCOs shutdown

Abstract:
Abstract The eutectic reaction between boron carbide (B4C) and stainless steel (SS) is one of the most important phenomena when considering the core disruptive accident (CDA) in a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR). Thus, in order to perform the safety assessment of SFR under postulated severe accidental condition reasonably, the kinetic information on B4C-SS eutectic reaction is required. In this study, the reaction experiments using SS crucibles and the pellets of SS with low B4C concentration, i.e., 2.5–10 mass% B4C as samples were performed to simulate the state of the reaction interface in which the eutectic reaction and interdiffusion of B4C-SS have progressed to a certain extent. Each sample was placed into an alumina core tube and heated up to 1473–1673 K at different duration time by using an electric furnace. For recording the thermal behavior of B4C-SS and SS-SS with low B4C concentration, in-situ observation for the appearance of each sample around eutectic temperature was performed using high sensitivity camera. The rate constant as kinetic information was estimated on the basis of the thickness of the eutectic layer and duration time after the reaction experiments. It was revealed that the rate constants of eutectic reaction between SS and SS with 2.5–10 mass% B4C are smaller than that of B4C-SS eutectic reaction at high temperatures. Besides, the rate constant of the eutectic reaction between SS and SS with certain B4C concentration became small when the B4C concentration against SS decreased. Moreover, it was confirmed that the liquid phase reaction feature of SS-SS with certain B4C concentration is still dominant in comparison with that of B4C-SS at low temperatures.

Abstract:
This paper addresses dangerous failures of stainless steel (SS) trim spring operated pressure relief valves (SOPRV) due to a particular failure mode (SS-to-SS adhesion) which is not currently being included in SOPRV failure rates. As a result, current methods for estimating or predicting failure rates for SS trim SOPRV significantly underestimate these failure rates and, consequently, overestimate the safety provided by the SOPRV as measured by its average probability of failure on demand (PFDavg) or its corresponding safety integrity level (SIL). The paper also illustrates the critical importance of root cause analysis (RCA) of dangerous SOPRV failures in understanding the impacts of various failure modes. Over 1300 proof test results for both new and used SS trim SOPRV from the Savannah River Site (SRS) were identified. RCA was used on the failed valves to classify those failed due to SS-to-SS adhesions. Statistical analysis of the data convincingly demonstrates adhesions, previously assumed to be only an in-storage failure phenomenon, are also an in-service failure mode which needs to be included in SOPRV failure rates. The paper discusses the factors which potentially influence the adhesion failure mode and suggests a possible approach to including this mode in failure rate predictions. An example illustrates how current failure rate models overestimate SS trim SOPRV safety by one or two orders of magnitude.

"Study on Eutectic Melting Behavior of Control Rod Materials in Core Disruptive Accidents of Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactors: Kinetic Study of Boron Carbide-Stainless Steel Eutectic Melting by Differential Thermal Analysis." Abstract:
Abstract In a postulated severe accidental condition of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), eutectic melting between boron carbide (B4C) as control rod element and stainless steel (SS) as control rod cladding or related structure may take place. Thus, kinetic behavior of B4C-SS eutectic melting is one of the important phenomena to be considered when evaluating the core disruptive accidents in SFR. In this study, for the first step to obtain the fundamental information on kinetic feature of B4C-SS eutectic melting and compare the pervious findings, the thermal analysis using the pellet type samples of B4C and Type 316L SS as different experimental technique was performed up to 1773 K at different heating rates of 2.5–10 K/min. The differential thermal analysis (DTA) endothermic peaks for the B4C-SS eutectic melting appeared from 1483K to 1534K and systematically shifted to higher temperatures when increasing heating rate. Based on this kinetic feature, apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factor for the B4C-SS eutectic melting were determined by Kissinger method. It was found that the kinetic parameters obtained by thermal analysis were comparable to the literature values of thinning experiment at high temperatures. In addition, the microstructure and element distribution formed in the interdiffusion layer composed of the B4C / SS system were analyzed by the electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), which can provide key validation data on elemental interdiffusion behavior in the early stage of the eutectic melting.

Abstract:
During the early months of the global pandemic the international Disability Rights Monitor group survey illustrated the circumstances of persons with disabilities around the world. Gradually literature on the situation for persons with disabilities in sub-Saharan Africa started to emerge. As members of an informal network looking at issues affecting this group, some of the authors of this report realised that much of the research done was not specifically focusing on their perceptions during the pandemic and that it was not using the WG-SS questions. Having noticed a gap in the type of data being collected by other scholars and the media, this small informal network identified a need for a survey that would look at both experiences and perceptions of persons with disabilities focussing on lived experiences of socioeconomic impacts and access to human rights during the pandemic in South Africa. This report summarises some of the key findings of the study, which was conducted on-line using Google Forms from the 1 July to 31 August 2021. All percentages displayed are rounded to the nearest percent and this may affect what is displayed in charts. While we cite some literature in this report, a separate literature review was written by the team, and was used to guide the research and focus the questions.

Holmgren, Kerstin, Nuno Prista, and Magnus Dahlberg. Revidering av miljöövervakningen i trendsjöar : färre nät eller färre provfisken? Department of Aquatic Resources, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54612/a.8ev6iu5kr4.

Full text
Abstract:

LOW-TEMPERATURE COMPRESSION BEHAVIOUR OF CIRCULAR STUB STAINLESS-STEEL TUBULAR COLUMNS. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2022.18.3.4.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper firstly studies mechanical properties of stainless steel (SS) S30408 at the low temperature (T) range of -80~20℃. Further compression tests are carried out on 20 SS stub tubular columns (SSSTCs) at low temperatures of -80, -60, -30, and 20℃ to investigate their low-temperature compression behaviour. Including the testing low temperatures, the wall thickness of SS tube (t) is the other investigated parameters. Test results show that decreasing the T from 20 to -80℃ improves the yield and ultimate strength of stainless steel by 29% and 80%, respectively, but reduces its ductility by about 25%. Under low-temperature compression, elephant foot local buckling occurs to most of SSSTCs and inelastic inward and outward local buckling occurred to specimens with 6 mm-thick SS tube. Test results also show that the decreasing T value increases the strength and stiffness of SSSTCs, but compromises their ductility; the wall thickness of SSSTCs significantly improves their strength, stiffness, and ductility. This paper also develops 3D finite element model (FEM) to estimate the low-temperature compression behaviour of SSSTCs, which considers nonlinearities of material and geometry, geometric imperfections, and influences of low temperatures. The validations show it predicts reasonably well the low-temperature compression behaviours of SSSTCs.

Agronomic performance and farmer preferences for biofortified orange-fleshed sweetpotato varieties in Zimbabwe. International Potato Center, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.4160/9789290605669.

Full text
Abstract:
This report summarizes the findings of a study carried out to evaluate the agronomic performance and sensory acceptance by small holder farmers of six biofortified orange-fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) varieties that were first introduced from CIP’s sweetpotato breeding hub for Southern Africa in Mozambique. The study was participatory and carried out under different agroecological environments in Zimbabwe. The six OFSP varieties, namely Alisha, Victoria, Delvia, Sumaia, Namanga and Irene were planted in the 2019/20 agricultural season along with two non-biofortified white-fleshed local varieties, namely Chingova and German II, at seven DR&SS research stations (Kadoma, Marondera, Harare, Henderson, Gwebi, Makoholi and Panmure) and 120 farmer managed on-farm trial sites in 12 LFSP districts of Bindura, Gokwe North, Gokwe South, Guruve, Kwekwe, Makoni, Mazowe, Mount Darwin, Mutasa, Mutare, Shurugwi and Zvimba. At all but one of the research stations, two trials were set up, one under irrigation and the other under rain-fed conditions. On-farm trials were established following the Mother-Baby Trial approach with 2 mother trials and 8 baby trials per district. In each of the districts, one mother trial was planted under irrigation while the other was rain-fed. All the baby trials were rain-fed.
