Abstract:
Abstract A drought monitoring system (DMS) can help to detect and characterize drought conditions and reduce adverse drought impacts. The authors evaluate how a DMS for Washington State, based on a land surface model (LSM), would perform. The LSM represents current soil moisture (SM), snow water equivalent (SWE), and runoff over the state. The DMS incorporates the standardized precipitation index (SPI), standardized runoff index (SRI), and soil moisture percentile (SMP) taken from the LSM. Four historical drought events (1976–77, 1987–89, 2000–01, and 2004–05) are constructed using DMS indicators of SPI/SRI-3, SPI/SRI-6, SPI/SRI-12, SPI/SRI-24, SPI/SRI-36, and SMP, with monthly updates, in each of the state’s 62 Water Resource Inventory Areas (WRIAs). The authors also compare drought triggers based on DMS indicators with the evolution of drought conditions and management decisions during the four droughts. The results show that the DMS would have detected the onset and recovery of drought conditions, in many cases, up to four months before state declarations.

Abstract:
AbstractDrought is an extreme event that causes great economic and environmental damage. The main objective of this study is to evaluate sensitivity, characterization and propagation of drought in the Upper Blue Nile. Drought indices: standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the recently developed standardized reconnaissance drought index (RDIst) are applied for five weather stations from 1980 to 2015 to evaluate RDIst applicability in the Upper Blue Nile. From our analysis both SPI and RDIst applied for 3-, 6-, 12 month of time scales follow the same trend, but in some time steps the RDIst varies with smaller amplitude than SPI. The severity and longer duration of drought compared with others periods of meteorological drought is found in the years 1984, 2002, 2009, 2015 including five weather stations and entire Upper Blue Nile. For drought relationships the correlation analysis is made across the time scales to evaluate the relationship between meteorological drought (SPI), soil moisture drought (SMI), and hydrological drought (SRI). We found that the correlation between three indices (SPI, SMI and SRI) at different time scales the 24-month time scale is dominant and are given by 0.82, 0.63 and 0.56.

Abstract:
Purpose By testing the weak form of efficient market hypothesis (EMH) this study aims to forecast the short-term stock prices of the US Dow and Jones environmental socially responsible index (SRI) and Shariah compliance index (SCI). Design/methodology/approach This study checks the validity of the weak form of EMH for both SCI and SRI prices by using different parametric and non-parametric tests, i.e. augmented Dickey-Fuller test, Philip-Perron test, runs test and variance ratio test. If the EMH is invalid, the research further forecasts short-term stock prices by applying autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model using daily price data from 2010 to 2018. Findings The research confirms that a weak form of EMH is not valid in the US SRI and SCI. The historical data can predict short-term future price movements by using technical ARIMA model. Research limitations/implications This study provides better guidance to risk-averse national and international investors to earn higher returns in the US SRI and SCI. This study can be extended to test the EMH of Islamic equity in the Middle East and North Africa region and other top Islamic indexes in the world. Originality/value This study is a new addition to the existing literature of equity investment and price forecasting by comparing and investigating the market efficiency of two interrelated US SRI and SCI.

Abstract:
In this study, pinus koraiensis (nut pine) and quercus aliena (white oak) and polyethylene (PE) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were selected. And it was measured with a cone calorimeter in accordance with ISO 5660-1. With the measured values, it was intended to comprehensively predict the risk of smoke by Chung’s equations 1 (smoke performance index, SPI) and Chung’s equations 2 (smoke growth index, SGI). To standardize fire hazard assessment in case of fire by extending this, standard materials (PMMA) were used to classify the smoke risk by the Chung's equations-V (smoke performance index-V, SPI-V and smoke growth index-V, SGI-V) and Chung's equation-VI (smoke risk index-VI, SRI-VI) to evaluate it. The SPI-V was the lowest with nut pine of 0.73 and the highest PE was the highest with 37.22. In the SGI-V, PE was the material that produced the least smoke with the least amount of 0.03. Nut pine is expected to generate a large amount of smoke with the highest at 10.00. SRI-VI, it appeared in the order of PE (0.00) < PMMA (1.00) < white oak (1.44) << nut pine (13.70). Therefore, it was judged that PE had the lowest smoke risk and nut pine had the highest. In addition, it was found that the combustion of wood was done in an incomplete form than that of plastics.

Abstract:
Drought is one of the most significant hazards in Sri Lanka. Status of drought in Sri Lanka was assessed using Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) at 3, 6, and 12 months’ time scales using monthly rainfall (1970 to 2017) data of 54 weather stations. The frequency of drought events was evaluated using SPI, and trend of SPI was also detected using the Mann–Kendall (MK) test and Sen’s slope estimator. The result based on SPI identified hydrological years 1975-76, 1982-83, 1986-87, 1988-89, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2013-14, and 2016-17 as drought years for 52, 32, 35, 33, 33, 31, 31, and 31% of tested stations (54), respectively, at annual time scale. Comparison of the SPI at different time scales revealed that more drought events (SPI ≤ −1) occurred during Yala season than Maha cropping season. Considering the Thiessen polygon average rainfall, more frequent drought events occurred in the dry zone (57%) than the wet (49%) and intermediate zone (47%) at the annual time scale. SPI trend results showed greater increase in drought (59% of stations) during Yala seasons as compared to the Maha cropping season (15% of stations) in Sri Lanka.

Abstract:
Drought is a phenomenon that is caused by several factors and can be divided into meteorological drought, agricultural drought, hydrological drought, and socioeconomic drought. In this study, the characteristics of propagating from meteorological drought to agricultural (or hydrological) drought in the Andong Dam basin and Hapcheon Dam basin located in the Nakdong River basin in Korea were investigated. Standardized precipitation index (SPI), standardized soil moisture index (SMI), and standardized runoff index (SRI) were used to characterize meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological droughts, respectively. SPI-m (1–12) on various timescales and SMI-1 (or SRI-1) were selected as drought propagation timeseries, such that a correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation and propagation time between meteorological and agricultural (or hydrological) drought. Propagation probability was quantified using a copula-based model. The correlation between meteorological and agricultural (or hydrological) droughts was not significantly affected by seasons. A relatively strong correlation was found in summer. A relatively weak correlation was shown in autumn. In addition, it was found that there was a difference in correlation between the Andong Dam basin and the Hapcheon Dam basin. On the other hand, in both watersheds, the propagation time was as long as 2 to 4 months in spring and decreased to 1 month in summer.

Abstract:
Water resources have always been a major concern, particularly in arid and semiarid parts of the world. Low precipitation and its uneven distribution in Algeria, along with fast population and agriculture activity increase and, particularly, recent droughts, have made water availability one of the country’s most pressing issues. The objectives of the studies reported in this article are to investigate and forecast the meteorological and hydrological drought in Wadi Ouahrane basin (270 km2) using linear stochastic models known as Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and multiplicative Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA). In particular, data from 6 precipitation stations and 1 hydrometric station for the period 1972–2018 were used to evaluate the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Runoff Index (SRI) for 12 months. Then, the multiplicative ARIMA model was applied to forecasting drought based on SPI and SRI. As a result, the ARIMA model (1,0,1)(0,0,1)12 for SPI and (1,0,1)(1,0,1)12 for SRI were shown to be the best models for drought forecast. In fact, both models exhibited high quality for SPI and SRI of 0.97 and 0.51 for 1-month and 12-month lead time, respectively, based on validation R2. In general, prediction skill decreases with increase in lead time. The models can be used with reasonable accuracy to forecast droughts with up to 12 months of lead time.

Abstract:
The thesis is an ethnohistorical study of one major pilgrimage site in Sri Lanka, known as Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak), where hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually visit to worship the sacred footprint where is looted in the mountain top temple. This sacred footprint has different sacred connotations for Sri Lanka’s major religious groups (Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Catholic). However, this pilgrimage site, which was considered a multi-religious site until the turn of the twentieth century, has now been constructed or ordered into an ethnic majoritarian Buddhist space. My thesis, therefore, concentrates in part on the historical process which has led to the construction of the pilgrimage site as a Buddhist space, and then locates this process within the wider context of the rise of Sinhala Buddhist nationalism in Sri Lankan. My work highlights the powerful role pilgrimage can play in particular religious discourses and the manner it legitimates certain ways of envisaging power and relationships of domination at particular conjunctures, which is clearly apparent in the contemporary Sinhala Buddhist cultural nationalism in Sri Lanka. This thesis is divided into three interconnected parts. The first part considers ‘knowledge production’ about Sri Pada while the second part explores the major competing discourses that have been arisen during its political and religious history. The final part is mainly focused on the style of religiosity and the social composition of pilgrims, and explores social factors in the practices of worship. One chapter deals with the style of “official” Buddhist religiosity found at this centre and two further chapters look at devotional and expressive forms of religiosity of pilgrims, which is oriented to the Buddha rather than the gods and as such is markedly different from that documented by anthropologists working in other parts of the island. The final chapter investigates links between devotional styles and the shifting socio-political contexts. The documentation of the prevailing styles of religiosity at Sri Pada enable me to show on one hand how such religiosity further undermines the broadly Weberian antinomies that have dominated the anthropology of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, and on the other hand the intensity or scale of Buddhicization of the historically viewed ‘sacred site’.

This report examines the role of the privatization in Sri Lanka and assesses its effectiveness. The focus was given for the evolution of privatization and how socio-political factors such as rent-seeking, inconsistency policy making, market competition, political uncertainty and role of supporting institutions have affected the privatization process. After the independence in 1948, several reforms have been taken place in Sri Lanka. In 1977, a market oriented policy package which brought huge amount of foreign aids into the country was introduced. Further the privatization in Sri Lanka can be addressed as: Sporadic attempt, Systematic approach and Structured approach. The appointment of short-term governments and changing of the leadership has always been a hurdle for a successful privatization in Sri Lanka. In order to establish a successful privatization, it requires having the changing of ownership from public sector to private sector, creating a competitive market environment and forming a proper institutional framework. Unfortunately, due to less emphasis was given to the latter two factors: the privatization has always given undesirable outcomes. In the whole history of privatization in Sri Lanka, the highest value for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) was recorded in 2008. It is clear that the reason for the FDI value escalation in 2008 is the improved confidence of foreign investors by addressing security concerns. In conclusion, it is time to investigate whether the current regulatory model is the most appropriate arrangement for the prevailing economic, social and cultural circumstances in Sri Lanka.

Abstract:
The competitive advantages of Sri Lanka's garment industry, and how these can lead to increased trade with Swedish companies, were examined through a study divided in two main parts. The research was carried out with a focus on the labour force and the social aspects of CSR. It was initiated in Sweden, where the goal was to investigate how Swedish companies select suppliers and what their requirements are in terms of code of conduct and social responsibility. In the following part of the study we examined the corresponding parts of Sri Lanka's garment industry. To identify the competitive advantages and potential problems, we conducted a study on three different factories in the country, where the owners, managers and workers were interviewed. To further expand the survey results we also interviewed additional stakeholders to the industry. In this case a trade union and an organization working in the garment industry. The collected data were analysed using selected parts of Porter's diamond and Carroll's CSR pyramid, as well as the Swedish companies' demands on the social aspects of CSR. In order to identify these requirements, interviews were conducted with four different people at the Swedish companies. We were also given access to documents with their code of conduct. Through our analysis we are able to identify the competitive advantages that exist within the industry. In addition to that we are able to identify the areas of the industry where problems exist today, but where Sri Lanka has the opportunity to strengthen its competitive advantages in order to become a more attractive partner for Swedish companies.

Abstract:
The sustainability of Social Responsible Investments (SRI) markets is highly dependent on the accuracy of social and environmental information. Surprisingly, and in contrast to financial information, there exists no methodological standard for gathering social and environmental information in SRI markets. This work is a first contribution to the understanding of how SRI-analysts verify the accuracy of social and environmental information. A second aim of this thesis is to evaluate if SRI-analysts can produce an accurate output with their respective methodologies. To do so, a case study was performed comparing the assessment of social and environmental information at SRI-screening firms to the more regulated financial auditing process, using legal a categorization of evidence strengths as a model. The findings of this study suggest that practices are not standardized amongst SRI-analysts. Therefore, investors are unlikely to receive an equal degree of information accuracy from one analyst to the next. Moreover, when comparing SRI-screening and financial auditing using the legal categorization of evidence, it was found that screening firms tend to produce outputs that are less carefully verified than seen in their financial counterparts. Nevertheless, the findings also reveal that SRI-analysts generally acknowledge the importance of assessing sources of evidence when controlling information accuracy. In conclusion, a standardized methodology should be welcomed by SRI-analysts, and the legal categorization of evidence strengths could be a good starting point to manage information accuracy in their screening process.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis is conducted as a Minor Field Study (MFS) in Sri Lanka, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The tourism industry have become a key factor for economic growth in several developing countries. A section of branding which refers to branding of a whole country is place branding. Place branding is seen as a complex process which involves multiple parts of the country. In order to ease for brand managers and to develop the theory of place branding, Hanna and Rowley (2011) have developed a new model of place branding. The model is named the Strategic place brand management model (SPBM- model) and consists of components which are argued to be essential parts in the process of branding a place. Developing countries have a need for place branding practices in order to create economic growth. The SPBM-model could therefore be a useful contribution to the research field of place branding in developing countries. The research questions of this research was therefore firstly to see how Sri Lanka work with the components in the SPBM-model, and second to find out which components in the SPBM-model that can be seen as important based on Sri Lankan conditions. This to answer the purpose of this thesis: explore how the SPBM-model can be applied on the process of branding Sri Lanka. The study was made through a case study of the developing country of Sri Lanka. In order to gain data, seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with officials working with branding Sri Lanka as a tourism destination. By putting the SPBM-model on the Sri Lankan place branding process it can be interpreted that all components are tightly connected to each other, and some parts seems to be more important for Sri Lanka then others. If Sri Lanka put more time and effort in the three components of infrastructure, stakeholders and evaluation, also the other six components of the SPBM-model (identity, brand experience, WOM, architecture, communication andarticulation) indirect will be affected in a positive way.

De, Silva Maduwage. "Dental workforce planning in Sri Lanka." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2012. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/354407/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sri Lanka is a developing South Asian country which provides free education and healthcare for all its citizens. This thesis presents a policy-oriented study, partly empirical and partly modelling, whose aim was to understand dental care provision and workforce planning, at a time where Sri Lanka‟s dental health policies appear to have failed to achieve their intended results, leading to a mismatch between supply and demand, i.e. “underemployment and unemployment” of trained dental surgeons, despite an increasing need for dental care within the population. The first section of this thesis describes a novel method of collecting primary data on Sri Lanka‟s dental health professionals, in a challenging setting where there was no existing database. The thesis also presents a methodology to convert need for dental care to demand for care, adapting an existing model developed by the World Health Organization and the Federation Dentaire Internationale to suit the Sri Lankan setting. Finally, this section of the thesis describes a survey to identify the “timings” taken for various dental treatment modalities in Sri Lanka. The second section of the thesis presents a System Dynamics model, which uses the data obtained from these empirical surveys, to address dental workforce planning issues in Sri Lanka. The model is then used to simulate various different scenarios, generating realistic, practical and insightful lessons for policy making. Based on the results of this model, in 2011 the Government of Sri Lanka took steps to deal with the “employment mismatch” issue by restricting the annual intake of dental students and by creating 400 new Government-funded posts over the following two years.

Abstract:
Measurements of the energy distributions, Branching ratios, and angular distributions of electrons ejected from SrI 5p3/2ns1/2 and 5p1/2ns1/2 J=1 doubly excited states with n ranging from 10 to 20 in the autoionization to the SrII 5s, 4d, and 5p ion state have been made by the techniques of Isolated-Core-Excitation and Time-of-Flight Spectroscopy. The experiment consists of three Nd:YAG laser pumped tunable dye lasers which excite the Sr atoms in an atomic beam from the ground state to the 5p3/2ns1/2 or 5p1/2ns1/2 J=1 autoionizing states. The autoionizing electrons are analyzed in energy and angle by a time of flight analyzer, and the electrons and residual ions are collected by two microchannel plate detectors respectively and sent to the computer through the Boxcar Integrators. The measurements show that the doubly excited SrI 5p3/2ns1/2 and 5p1/2ns1/2 J=1 states autoionize predominantly to the excited SrII 4d ion states with a p or f electron. The asymmetry parameter varies continuously within the line profile of the 5p3/2ns1/2 J=1 states as the manifestation of the localized interaction between the SrI 5p3/2ns1/2 and 5p1/2ns1/2 J=1 autoionizing series. This variation is distinguished from that caused by the interference between the excitation to the bound part of the autoionizing state and underlying continua.

"APPROACH AND INDICATOR SYSTEM FOR ASSESSMENT THE IMPACTS OF RESERVOIRS AND PROLONGED DROUGHT IDENTIFICATION IN BULGARIA FOR WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE." In 22nd SGEM International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference 2022. STEF92 Technology, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5593/sgem2022/3.1/s12.07.

Abstract:
Drought indicator systems help decision-makers to understand how and where the drought occurred and to take measures from the Drought Management Plans. The main goal in the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is the achievement good ecological status, but the Article 4.6 allows temporary deterioration of the status, occurred as a result of so called prolonged drought. Reduction of natural water resources such as rivers, lakes, aquifers, is associated with the reduction in available water resources for water supply, environment, etc. (so called socio economic drought). The severity of the prolonged drought is related to its duration, specificities of the river basin, reservoir management and impacts. The research is related to the system of drought indicators developed in NIMH (http://hydro.bg: Standardized Runoff Index, SRI; Standardized Precipitation Index, SPI; Soil Moisture Index, SMI) and its improvement at River Basin level. A new approach for integrated analysis of the indices of the NIMH system, the indicators used by the Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) - inflow and levels of reservoirs, groundwater, etc., has been developed. Thus, from the first months, the so-called hot spots and critical areas are identified - reservoirs, watersheds and river basins for which drought indicators identify drought and/or whose regulatory capabilities have declining potential and are at risk in the event of prolonged drought. Emphasis is placed on those hot spots where the precipitation deficit takes place in the reservoir watersheds. A system of criteria and drought indicators to identify prolonged droughts have been experimentally applied. A joint analysis of the SRI, SPI, SMI maps (http://hydro.bg), the developed maps for inflow and volume of complex and significant reservoirs from Annex 1 of the Water Act, etc., was performed. For assessment of the indicators for the reservoir inflow a scale of inflow used by the MoEW is proposed. For the indicator available volume, experiments with the Percent from reservoir capacity, Standardized Status Index, etc., were conducted. Drought periods in Bulgaria are analyzed, especially prolonged drought 2019 2020. The approach supports the operational application of the NIMH drought indicator system in the practice of the MoEW and the Drought Management Plans realization.

Abstract:
Abstract The hereditary properties of the Symmetric Rank One (SRI) update formula for numerically accumulating second order derivative information are studied. The unique advantage of the SR1 formula is that it does not require specific search directions for development of the Hessian matrix. This is an attractive feature for optimization applications where arbitrary search directions may be necessary. This paper explores the use of the SR1 formula within a procedure based on recursive quadratic programming (RQP) for solving a class of mixed discrete constrained nonlinear programming (MDCNP) problems. Theoretical considerations are presented along with numerical examples which illustrate the procedure and the utility of SR1.
