James, Henry. Washington Square. Edited by Adrian Poole. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199559190.001.0001.

Abstract:
‘She will do as I have bidden her.’ Catherine Sloper is heiress to a fortune and the social eminence associated with Washington Square. She attracts the attention of a good-looking but penniless young man, Morris Townsend. His suit is encouraged by Catherine's romantically-minded aunt, Mrs Penniman, but her father, a clever physician, is convinced that his motives are merely mercenary. He will not consent to the marriage, regardless of the cost to his daughter. Out of this classic confrontation Henry James fashioned one of his most deftly searching shorter fictions. First published in 1880 but set some forty years earlier in a pre-Civil War New York, the novel reflects ironically on the restricted world in which its heroine is marooned, seating herself at its close ‘for life, as it were’. In his introduction Adrian Poole reflects on the book's gestation and influences, the significance of place, and the insight with which the four prinicipal players are drawn. The edition includes an account of the real-life tale that sparked James's imaginative genius.

Abstract:
The entry of the USA into the war changed the dynamics of life at the American embassy in Grosvenor Square. Edith and E. F. Penrose became directly involved in planning the international conferences which would shape the postwar world, including Hot Springs, and dealing with the immediate problems of the end of the war such as the Morgenthau Plan. Edith and E. F. Penrose married in 1944 and Edith bore a son, Trevan, in July 1945. Edith’s brothers Jack and Harvey both had distinguished careers in the US Air Force in North Africa and Italy before Jack was shot down in early 1945. Both Edith and Penrose were directly involved in the creation of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration which dealt with refugee issues, and in supporting Winant and Eleanor Roosevelt during the formation of the United Nations and the first General Assembly in London in 1946.

Abstract:
An important issue with respect to setting up the new system of government was where to put the presidency. The capital city, it was decided, would be central between North and South. Congress and the presidency would be in the same city, separated by a swamp. ‘The Presidency Finds Its Place’ looks at how the location was decided and evolved over time. Presidential candidates were not required to go through Congress to win. They were to be independently elected. Three governing centers were established in the new capital: one each for the Congress, the presidency, and the courts at Judiciary Square. The President's House was designed to be both a residence and a workplace.

Abstract:
A city that arose already modern, welcoming, and rich in experiences, affectionately called "Belô" or "Beagá" by some of its most intimate citizens. Every tourist easily feels welcomed in Belo Horizonte, a city that was planned to be the capital of Minas Gerais – with tree-lined streets and alleys that breathe art, stories, and charm. Despite being a Metropolis and home to approximately 2,600,000 (two million six hundred thousand) inhabitants, it still keeps secrets as a country town valuing its origins, which means not refusing a delicious coffee with "pão de queijo" (Brazilian cheese bread), and some chitchat in its squares and gardens. The best way to get to know and experience a city as a whole is to walk through it and experience its daily life, thus, connecting with the city and people. Walking around the city makes you notice details that you may have never noticed before. In this work, we present “UAI a PÉ” tours through Belo Horizonte, so that you can be familiar with and experience each one of them. Itineraries that will make you even more enchanted by our beautiful capital. Walk freely through the “Belo Horizonte Cultural: Circuito Liberdade” amid gardens and many stories and tales. Walk around the streets of the downtown, enjoying our “Belo Horizonte Urbana: Visual Arts,” which is an opportunity to experience our Urban Art that is a worldwide reference. Have a conversation at “Praça da Estação Circuito Cultural”, the gateway to our city since its foundation – many stories are kept in museums and mansions there. “Cultura e Política Mineira”, which is an itinerary from Praça da Assembeia (Assembly Square) to Praça da Estação (Station Square), to understand our history and culture. Fresh breeze and sunset in the beautiful “Pampulha: Patrimônio da Humanidade” (cultural heritage of humanity) where modernism is present in every detail of this picturesque place.
