Abstract:
A variety of techniques for extracting information from data are presented, from pedestrian approaches such as the centuries old linear least-squares fit, to elegant binned and unbinned likelihood fits. A treatment of statistical combination of data leads to an introduction to the powerful Kalman filter approach, used to determine optimal estimates of deterministic-stochastic systems. In experimental physics the Kalman filter is used estimate trajectories from data, but it also finds applications in industrial process control, and in the aeronautics and robots industries. These techniques typically rely on either analytic or numerical optimization of an objective function. Orthogonal series density estimation, a Fourier technique, is also discussed.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the estimation of permanent magnetic synchronous (PMS) motor parameters, including stator winding resistance, motor inductances, and magnitude of permanent magnet flux linage, is presented in two main categories, i.e., offline and online. Several offline schemes, including DC and AC standstill tests, no-load test, load test, and vector control schemes, are presented for estimation of all the motor parameters. Major online schemes used in the estimation of PMS motor parameters are also presented in this chapter. They include closed-loop observer-based estimation, model reference adaptive system (MRAS)-based estimation, recursive least-squares (RLS) estimation, and extended Kalman filter scheme. The online schemes take into account the motor parameter variations during motor operation. The motor model, estimation procedure, and the connection of estimation systems to the motor control system are discussed for each parameter estimation scheme.

Lingelbach, Bernd. The Scintillating Grid. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199794607.003.0052.

Full text
Abstract:
The scintillating grid was first presented at the European Conference on Visual Perception in Tübingen in 1995. At the time, the prevailing explanation of the Hermann grid illusion was in terms of the arrangement of the receptive fields on the retina. The minor modification of having a grey instead of a white grid with white dots at the intersections produced a strikingly new and powerful illusion. Instead of the white dots, dark black dots are seen to “blink” and appear even darker in intensity than the black printer’s ink of the square. They then disappear again to reappear immediately somewhere else. The dark diagonals that appear from time to time fitted more to low-pass filtering. The study of low-pass filtered Hermann grids led to the discovery of the scintillating grid and several variants. To this day this illusion still has not been fully explained.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses two questions: Why are the armed forces of some states more inclined than others to shoot when the masses converge upon a public square? Why are some soldiers more likely to put down their arms and join the crowds rather than turn against them? The citizen-soldier model emerges as a common thread among militaries that have toppled dictatorships. In these militaries, the leadership is often made up of career professionals, but the rank-and-file members are conscripts, also called “citizen-soldiers.” They serve a mandatory term in the military, usually one to three years, before returning to civilian life. These conscripts are civilians first and soldiers second. The rotation of civilians in and out of the military creates a feedback loop between the military and the civilian population that keeps the military in touch with civilian values.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the Congressional hearings of 1989 that addressed the issue of cable television's sports telecasts. For many years, Congress aided and abetted over-the-air television's dominance via antisiphoning regulations that restricted cable and pay-television access to many sporting events that were being telecast over-the-air for free. The intent of the regulations was to prevent programs from switching from free over-the-air to pay-television delivery. Home Box Office (HBO) filed suit over the antisiphoning rules and eventually won in court, thereby ending the antisiphoning regulation. The courts found that there was no evidence to suggest that cable television companies were going to usurp free television. With these developments, cable television was ready to compete with the networks and independent television stations. This chapter examines the 1989 hearings that revolved primarily around the New York Yankees' deal with the Madison Square Garden Network to show all the team's games on the cable channel. It also discusses the legal and economic aspects of whether cable telecasts of sporting events violated antitrust law.

Abstract:
On Friday 19th February 1937, following an abortive attack by a handful of insurgents on Mussolini's High Command in the Italian-occupied nation state of Ethiopia, 'repression squads' of armed Blackshirts and Fascist civilians were unleashed on the defenseless residents of the capital city Addis Ababa. In three terror-filled days and nights of arson, murder and looting, thousands of innocent and unsuspecting men, women and children were roasted alive, shot, bludgeoned, stabbed to death, or blown to pieces with hand-grenades. The incident is popularly known as Yekatit 12, the date concerned in the Ethiopian calendar. Meanwhile the notorious Viceroy Rodolfo Graziani, infamous for his atrocities in Libya, took the opportunity to add to the carnage by eliminating the intelligentsia and nobility of the ancient Ethiopian empire in a pogrom that swept across the land. In a richly illustrated and ground-breaking work backed up by meticulous and scholarly research, the author reconstructs and analyses one of Fascist Italy's least known atrocities, which he estimates eliminated 19-20 per cent of the capital's population. He exposes the hitherto little known cover-up conducted at the highest levels of the British government, which enabled the facts of one of the most hideous civilian massacres of all time to be concealed, and the perpetrators to walk free.

Abstract:
In volleyball, the little things often mean the difference between being good and being great. But bridging the gap between the two requires the patience, persistence, and insight that come with experience. The Volleyball Handbook provides access to that experience through the knowledge and teachings of one of volleyball’s foremost experts in both boys’ and girls’ play. In this practical guide, veteran coach Bob Miller goes beyond the fundamentals to give you a grasp on the finer points of the sport that are essential to winning championships. Filled with practical, nuts-and-bolts information, each chapter is like a personal coaching clinic designed to help individuals and teams improve. Whether you’re learning to execute offensive and defensive techniques and tactics or organizing productive practices and game preparation, this insider’s guide will help ensure top-notch performances in matches and tournaments. And, because volleyball success hinges on a total team effort, you’ll benefit from a proven approach to creating a cohesive, winning attitude on the squad. Prepare to perform like a champion every time you step on the court. The Volleyball Handbook will show you the same methods that Miller used to guide his teams to 950 wins and 7 state championship titles during his phenomenal coaching career.
