Full textMy thesis deals with local public policies, with a particular focus on policies which since 2011 have acquired a mere territorial status. My aim was to verify if different political orientation of government could generate different orientation in policies. In order to test this hypothesis, I have chosen two municipalities which are very similar in terms of socio-economic variables, but with an otherwise politically orientated City Council. The cities I mean are Modena (led by Democratic Party) and Verona (led by a center-right council). Firstly, I have analyzed the major paradigms for the political study (rational choice, the Marxist paradigm, welfare economics, corporatism and pluralism, neo-institutionalism and the relational paradigm), and I have presented the paradigm used for political analysis (relational paradigm). I have applied experimental method by carrying out interviews to assessors for social policies, to municipal managers, to eighteen third-sector organizations involved in municipal policies, selected through the method called "ball of snow". Secondly, I have analyzed law provisions on social policy, both in the regional and municipal legislation, with a particular consideration to the so called “piani di zona”. To sum out, data analysis have confirmed the original research hypothesis. Political orientation has shown to produce different policies according to the relationship between Public Administration and Third Sector. Referring to Modena, it is possible to affirm a pure choice of outsourcing of services. On the other hand, referring to Verona, it is possible to verify a choice of subsidiarity and governance processes regarding to some policy areas (disabled and elderly). Finally, concerning to a planning phase, political orientation has demonstrated lower political influence with a planning of top-down type.

Full textLet's see how the prospect of 'relational approach contributes to the sociological study of sport. The first contribution is to trans-disciplinary approach, that is, the capacity not to avoid putting boundaries between disciplines such as sociology or ethics and work together without falling into the trap of an ethics ['sociologizzata'] ed'una sociology ['eticizzata'] The relational logic seeking economic development doesn´t forget the human society, always looking for people who are building the company. Another contribution is [in] its distinction between “human society” and the “society of the human race”. In the case of sport, theuse of genetic technologies to facilitate the performance of athletes and ultimately increase profit. Finally, I think relational sociology offers AGIL scheme, such as "relational compass", that helps us to achieve the objectives, the means, the rules (ethics) and values that must be followed in this sport as a social practice, and help to cement largely applied ethics in sport.

Full textCancer pain is an invasive and debilitating experience not only in bio-organic level, but also psychological and social. The main objective of this work is to explore oncological pain between women with breast cancer considering it as disease, illness and sickness. It investigates diffusion, representations, perceptions, meanings and experiences of pain and its treatments. The thesis is divided into two main parts , one theoretical and one empirical. The first presents a classification of the main concepts and theories of the sociology of health related to the concept of pain. The second part analyses oncological pain with an approach of mixed research based on an integration of quantitative and qualitative techniques. The quantitative part is based on a segment of the data of the National Research Esopo - Epidemiological Study of Pain in Oncology. Starting from the entire sample were isolated only women with breast cancer (n =846) . This sample was subjected to the statistical analysis with the SPSS program and the interpretation of results. The qualitative part is based on a netnography approach: it was conducted non-intrusive observation of 12 blogs written by women with breast cancer , with the aim to investigate narratives of illness, personal experiences , the meanings of pain and disease and their impact on daily life. The work concludes with some final remarks do not want to be definitive but suggestions for further reading, reflections and actions spendable. The work concludes with some final remarks that do not want to be definitive but suggestions for further reading, reflections and practice actions.

Full textThe thesis investigates youth paths of political and civic participation in the context of transitions to adulthood and focuses on the influence intergenerational relationships has on youth engagement. The empirical study consists of a qualitative research conducted in Bologna in 2012. Based on a grounded theory methodological approach, it involved a sample of young people and a sample of ‘significant adults’ through semi-structured interviews. The analysis shows a relevant disaffection towards politics among the youth which, however, does not lead to political and civic disengagement, but to a "conditional participation" expressed through proactive attitudes towards formal politics - based on a reform, resistance or rebellion logic- and through a deep investment in non-conventional activities. A negative interpretation of their present condition and a consequent intergenerational conflict are placed on the background of this type of involvement. Politics, in its most strictly formal expressions, is seen as an ‘adult area’ managed according to a logic that leaves little room to young people, who consequently choose to participate through alternative ways of activation where adult presence and power are perceived as weaker. Therefore, the young demographics’ departure from formal politics reflects a parallel distancing dynamic from adults, who appear unable to adequately perform their functions of model and recognition. Their ambivalence toward young people - that is, the constant fluctuation between pessimism and optimism, between oppressive guidance and lack of responsibility - results in a partial recognition of the real potential and needs of young people as citizens and emerging adults.

Full textThe current study provides a descriptive overview of features of the personal support networks of Italian drug users after a long-term residential therapeutic treatment. I measured ego-centered networks in a sample of 80 treated addicts, and investigated which characteristics of support networks (network structural features, relational properties, types of resources mobilized) are related to post-treatment substance use. Furthermore, I explored the role of social capital in terms of the advantages due to ego's location in the structure of relationships as an opportunity to reach more and diverse benefits protective against drug abuse. The results show that a lower risk of relapse is positively associated with having network members with higher socio-economic status, who supply reputational resources, have greater occupational heterogeneity, and reciprocate support. Social capital as a function of “brokerage opportunity” contributes to maintaining abstinence through enhanced access to information in less homogeneous personal networks and exposure of treated drug users to greater creative ideas and chances. Implications for designing and implementing more effective post-treatment relapse prevention programs are discussed.

Full textThe present doctoral thesis offers an intersectional analysis of the housing pathways of working class young people in Bologna, and of the role played by their family in the transition towards independent living, within a broader reflection on processes of reproduction and intergenerational transmission of social inequalities. The first part sets out the national and international sociological debate on youth’ social and housing inequalities, as well as the debate on social class. In the second part, the focus is on the empirical research. In particular, questions are raised on how families belonging to a particular social class, as understood in Bourdieu’s terms, negotiate and support the transition to independent living of their adult-children. The empirical study consists of a retrospective longitudinal qualitative research, carried out in Bologna in 2013-2014 on a sample of working-class families. Through life histories, young-adults and their parents were asked to reconstruct their biographies and housing experiences. The research highlights the emergence of specific and creative "micro-economic family systems". Through analysis on the collected materials, it was possible to identify several forms of parental support in young-adults’ pathways towards independent living, embedded in a wider system of intergenerational support, which continues even after leaving the family nest and confirms once again the strong ties characterizing Italian families. In the study, particular attention is given also to logics of legitimacy of parental support, underlying working class families' decisions of helping their adult-children. Finally, by comparing young adults’ idea of independence with that of their parents, the research reveals an apparent contradiction between representations of autonomy and independent living and everyday life practices, which is being solved by negotiating, between the two generations taken in exam, the meaning of independence itself.

Full textThe topic of the present work is the influence exerted by the Catholic Church in Poland on the drafting of national legislation on abortion and IVF, on their discursive construction and their collocation and expression in the public discourse. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first provides a theoric and historical framework motivating the close relations existing between State, Church, and identity in Poland, creating the stereotypical dyad Polak / Katolik. The second part verifies the persistence of this juxtaposition: through the analysis of data from the WVS and the Polish CBOS, we measure the level of religiosity and the impact of religion on daily life, behaviours, and moral choices of the population. Adherence rate to religious practices has not changed significantly over the last two decades. Although the affiliation is higher for some socio-demographic categories, differences are small and correlations often insignificant. The historical role of the Catholic Church in Poland and the widespread and deep religiosity of the country creates the social framework in which the public discourse is developed. In the third part, through Critical Discourse Analysis, we examined both the public discourses of the Polish Episcopal Conference and the representation of the issues in the national press. The analysis shows that public discourse is characterized by partiality, with a pro-life prevalence in terms of both language and message. Pro-life semantics moved not only from the oriented vocabulary to the everyday one, but also from the sphere of the discussion on reproductive rights to social definitions of more general concepts, configuring a “discursive barrier”. Moreover, while the Catholic press is particularly active in the discussion, the leftist one shows a less significant role in taking a position on the issue.

Full textThis work is about recognition. It is a choice that comes from my previous field experience with migrants, that made me understand that the current, rationalistic approach is not enough to satisfy their complex exigencies. It is aimed at people who are not to “intimately” belong to their destination context. It brings to the fore the problem of belonging, whose solution would require the acknowledgement of human dimensions that Western culture has put aside since the advent of Modernity. The thesis starts with the exam of essential sociological concepts and goes on to discuss the main questions that arise from it, such as communication and the importance of language in framing subjects and discourses. Its crucial themes are then developed through the study of interviews and focus groups I collected. Possible solutions are the next issue: I contend that a paradigmatic change is needed, so as to mediate between what modernity has already done and a complex thought that should bring about equal dignity for the different perspectives from which coexistence can be viewed. The issue with migrants is better understood as the indicator of a crisis in the destination countries, where the existing communities are losing unity and cohesion and are therefore not up to welcoming others. All this is part of a bigger picture, where the crisis of the Nation state triggers divergent dynamics that push on the one hand towards localism, on the other towards new configurations where supranational organizations come into play. The problem of recognition forces us to face the ideal of global citizenship and the thinkable ways of its realization. Moreover it urges us to develop new politics that focus on the relation between ethics and regulation and on the importance of a dialogue among the local, national and international levels.

Full textNowadays Italy has been experiencing a structural, stable and multigenerational migratory presence in which new generations have been increasingly getting access to the highest social and educational levels, including university. The educational choices young people make are either influenced by their social, cultural and economic background and also by their parents or other significant adults’ cultural background. Despite the fact that several researches were made on the presence of second-generation students in primary and secondary school, the state of research about the second generation students enrolled in the Italian University is still very poor: starting from theories such as segmented assimilation and selective acculturation, this research aims to examine the challenges and, simultaneously, the resources faced by young immigrants when they go on to university. After the quantification of the phenomenon at the Italian level, the research focused on the case of the University of Bologna: thanks to the collection of quantitative (online survey) and qualitative (semi-structured interviews) material, the resarch highlights the reasons that led the students to the decision to enroll to university, their results and their short and long-term projects. The ultimate goal is to provide guidance on the implementation of policies at national and educational level, which can concretely promote the full inclusion of second-generation students within the higher education system.

Full textWithin each American university campus, a Department of Public Safety (DPS) is designated to send students emails whenever a crime is committed on campus or in the surrounding area. The aim of this service is to provide an adequate awareness of such criminal activity. The hypothesis is that these crime-alert methods may represent a new and different type of control exercised by the DPS itself. The data was collected on two specific campuses. The total sample was 985 students. In general, this email service focuses on only some types of crime and not on others (e.g. sexual harassment and violence goes largely unreported), and this may reveal a new and different type of control exercised by the universities' department of public safety. Aside from the selectivity involved in deciding what to communicate or not, crime alerts may give rise to some form of control over the user's perception.

Full textThis thesis is a sociological case study about the Italian Red Cross (IRC) and its role in the welfare society, in light of the recent reform that transformed it from a public body into a Third Sector Body. It is intended to note whether the effects of the reform (2012), intersected with that of the Third Sector (2017), have had mainly positive or rather negative consequences in terms of public interest, for the IRC, for the State and generally for the Italian society. Furthermore, the thesis aims to start exploring a so far rarely considered field of sociological studies. The work is divided into three parts. In the first one, the research topic is theoretically framed within the welfare sociology: the work analyzes the welfare state sociological models, the most recent European social policy guidelines, as well as the Third Sector role in welfare systems. In the second part, the focus is concentrated on the Red Cross Body, first through the examination of the distinctive features of the Movement and of some most important National Societies, and then through a reconstruction of IRC history. The third part of the paper is dedicated to the exposition of the empirical research results, during which various investigation techniques, mainly qualitative, were used. In particular: a) the analysis of IRC official documentation, in order to highlight several structural dimensions (legal status, organization, finances, staff, objectives); b) the illustration and comment of twenty semi-structured interviews addressed to privileged witnesses (IRC executives, public Institutions representatives, Third Sector members, welfare sociologists). The emerged results, although not definitive, show a substantial positive outcome of the reform: the IRC is currently a vital, well structured, up with the times humanitarian organization, although hampered by some critical issues, which are considered in detail in the work.

Full textThe aim of this empirical study is to increase the knowledge base on gamblers’ careers - traditional and online - including the “factors” influencing gambling behavior, the “trends for gambling behavior”, the “gamblers relational scheme”, and “the sociological and criminological implications of gambling”. The study also examines the service units treating gambling disorders, analyzing social and healthcare-related measures and policies in the field of gambling, that can affect the way people cope with, or control their gambling compulsions. Three methodological steps are considered in building a large databank on the correlation between “gambling”, “gamblers,” and “environment of reference”. The research uses semi-structured interviews, which will prove invaluable in collecting personal knowledge and characteristics related to factors commonly associated with the gambler’s career and on the various social aspects that characterize gambling. The study intends to add an additional important qualitative dimension to current research in the area. a) examines the service units treating gambling disorders, analyzing social and healthcare-related measures and policies in the field of gambling, that can affect the way people cope with, or control their gambling compulsions.

Full textRed Cross is one of the biggest and most long-lived humanitarian organizations ever. The institution has been alive for more than 150 years and it is present in 190 States. I decided to do a sociological and historical research because I wanted to analyze the women’s roles of the American Red Cross and the Italian one during the First World War. Therefore, this thesis shows some social and cultural differences between Italian and American realities. I have taken a gendered approach to both case studies (American Red Cross and Croce Rossa Italiana) and organized the thesis in three parts. The first one is about the theoretical framework. In the second part I talk about the subject of study and the historical context of the Great War. Finally, in the third section I describe the research and the results achieved. I chose a non-intrusive methodology, and I collected many archival documents in Italy and in the United States to better understand the roles of women within those two institutions. Therefore, I did a quantitative and qualitative comparative analysis by using SPSS20 and NVivo12.

Full textThe subject of this thesis is technological innovation in health organizations, in particular I will focus on the computerized nursing record and its implications with nursing work and nursing professional practices. The chosen methodology is a mixed-method approach, a questionnaire was administered on a model based on 4 determining factors: resources, micro-relevance, micro-property, macro-relevance, which allows to measure the adoptability of an information system . The correlation between determinants and causalities was observed, using linear regression methods. To detect and study how technological innovation relates to the professional and organizational processes of the organizational actors, 5 focus groups were carried out. The studied context is in Italian Switzerland, it is a multi-site hospital that includes nine nursing institutions. The analysis was developed in three phases: in the first one the data from the questionnaires were analyzed, then the information obtained through the focus groups, and finally they were identified, themes and convergent data combined and analyzed through a mixed approach. The results made it possible to identify the micro-relevance as the fundamental variable for predicting and evaluating the adoptability of an information system in the healthcare environment, and the micro-property as the second variable in importance. Qualitative research has revealed themes such as information, time, interpersonal relationships, which characterize changes in professional practices, and were then crossed with sub-groups of variables taken from the questionnaire. In conclusion, the adoptability of an information system, must include changes to the organization, implies changes in the role and culture of nursing and must be accompanied by training activities for the various actors involved.

Full textThe aim of this work is to (re)construct the emergence process of the “Science and Technology Studies” (STS) field, as a result of broad disciplinary negotiations (especially between history of science, sociology of science and philosophy of science). In order to achieve this, I proposed an integrated methodology that I labelled “Socio-Historical Epistemology”. From the historical point of view, my Ph.D thesis provides a detailed survey of the academic emergence of the “STS” interdisciplinary field, from the 60s to the mid 80s (made also through archive research and oral history). First of all, I traced some intellectual, academical and socio-political trajectories, in order to explain the conditions of the emergence of this field (from the 30s to the 60s). In the following chapter I proposed a cartography of the major research units and pedagogical programs in U.K., U.S., France, German Democratic Republic, Federal Republic of Germany, Austria and Netherlands. Finally, another chapter is dedicated to the professional and international societies in STS. The results of this historical inquiry have been interpreted and organised through the framework of the “sociology of scientific fields” and the “sociology of knowledge”. Furthermore, the philosophical approach has made possible an epistemological analysis of both the historical and the sociological genesis and development of the interdisciplinary context of research of the “STS”. In this sense I argued that disciplinary boundaries in social sciences are, at the same time, diachronically constructed and reconstructed, through a collective process of controversies and negotiations and due to epistemological claims.

Full textRecent technological innovations and the progressive liberalization of the market have contributed to extending the forms and opportunities for enjoying gambling. However, the specific medical lens with we looked at the phenomenon in recent years has not allowed to observe the ways in which this translates into people's daily lives. The aim of the thesis is to understand the concrete playing practices built by young people and the meanings attributed to these experiences; focusing in particular on the analysis of the repertoiresthey use for supporting their gambling practices. The research adopts an interactionist perspective (Blumer, 1969) and Becker's Labeling Theory (1963). For bringing out the point of view of the actors, the procedural nature of learning, and the desire to compare the specificity of the individual games, I focused on two specific practices - sports and poker - and on one specific population: the youth. This choice coincided with the adoption of a non-standard methodology through the techniques of semi-structured interview and participant observation.

Full textDiabetes is a chronic condition that requires constant management through the measurement of body parameters and consequent therapeutic adaptations in everyday life. The research goal was to investigate what role digital devices could have in managing the disease, looking in particular at how these tools fit into practices that affect aspects of everyday life, the concept of self and the patients’ illness. The main results that emerged from the research, which was conducted through qualitative techniques, show that the adoption of constant and correct management practices through digital devices occurs if a “place in one's life” has been found for diabetes, i.e. the disease is accepted as an integral part of one's personal and social identity. In these cases, the use of digital devices can provide a database that allows, through self-tracking practices, to know your body and its changes in different daily situations better, and therefore to reflect on the data for decision-making and affect the course of the disease in the long term. Furthermore, it is necessary that the use of digital tools is conducted in a conscious manner, that is, considering the risks that may derive from trusting them excessively.

Full textWhen cancer affects a relative in the household, the younger members tend to be marginalised within the family relationship system; this implies consequences on individual lives and the family emotional wellbeing. Testing this hypothesis, the research aimed to understand whether and how the involvement of children and adolescents in caring for family members in oncology treatments can represent a resource for the family. Since the design phase, the investigation was implemented in adopting a Grounded Theory approach tapping into the experiences of professionals questioned through semi-structured interviews which lead to focus a parallel literature review ranging from sociology of childhood, sociology of health and sociology of family. The review identified children’s agency (Favretto, Zaltron, Fucci:2017), along with semantics and experienced illnesses (Maturo:2007) as crucial concepts to understand cancer-related biographical disruptions (Bury:2001) through a narrative-based medicine approach (Kleinman:1988) adopted from child-centred point of view (Alanen and Mayall:2001, 2015). Based on these principles and concepts, 16 children and youth were consulted through in-depth interviews; their age ranging from 13 to 26 y.o., they all have had a family member suffering from cancer during their childhood and adolescence. The participants’ narratives were organised in five thematic frames: 1) attributions of meaning to a primary relative’s illness, 2) modalities and effects of shared biographical disruptions, 3) normalization processes implemented towards the oncological illnesses, 4) opportunities of participation in caring practices 5) perceptions of positive and negative effects of being involved as children/adolescents in the care of a family member. In harmonising theories from sociology of health and childhood studies, the paper sustains the worthiness of re-thinking and re-defining the interplay between children’s agency and family’s biographical disruptions. The combination of alternative models from usually separated disciplines offers an epistemological contribution in researching on intergenerational relationships within sociology of health and illness frameworks.

Full textAmong the various conflicts that contribute to making society unstable and fueling inequalities between individuals and groups, those for the use of land and natural resources are of crucial importance since they primarily concern the very survival of living ecosystems. The phenomenon of local protest against unwanted land uses (LULU) is constantly increasing all over the world and in Italy, and has been analyzed above all from a sociological and political perspective, but also through the lens of social and environmental psychology. The aim of this work is to explore the emotional dimension of socio-environmental conflicts, helping to fill a gap in this field, especially with respect to the Italian literature. If, on the one hand, the NIMBY narrative, which emphasizes for strategic purposes the localist, irrational and selfish character of the protests against the unwelcome uses of the territory, is questioned, on the other, the role of emotions emerges both as a driving force of protest but also in relation to the processes of development or decline. The research focuses on an ongoing protest against the construction of an international gas pipeline - the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) - in a coastal area of Salento, in Puglia. I adopted a qualitative method in order to better grasp the meanings and emotions of the subjects involved in the protest, through the use of techniques such as interview, participant observation and the analysis of documentary material relating to the conflict.

Full textThe outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a substantial reorganisation of hospital facilities, and oncological care itself has been reorganised trying to ensure, on the one hand, the safety of patients and healthcare professionals, and on the other, continuity of treatment. The project analyses the impact of this reorganisation on the illness trajectories of cancer patients and on the care work of the actors in various ways involved in the definition of these illness trajectories. The research was conducted through 41 semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals, voluntary associations, cancer patients and informal caregivers in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna. The management of Covid risk entailed a substantial commitment in terms of safety work by healthcare professionals. The exclusion of family members and voluntary associations from hospital facilities, imposed as a safety measure, meant greater patient loneliness at all stages of the treatment process. The assistance usually provided by family members and voluntary associations includes a component of “invisible work” that the pandemic has allowed to come to light. Family members and voluntary associations informally support the work of healthcare professionals within the hospital setting. The professionals interviewed recognised the lack of this support. Healthcare professionals, and nurses in particular, have tried to, at least partially, replace the care work usually provided by family members and voluntary associations: on the one hand, by increasing their effort in terms of sentimental work, and therefore of emotional support to patients; on the other hand, with the implementation of new care practices aimed at responding not only to the biomedical needs of patients, but also to the psychological and relational ones, paradoxically showing a greater attention towards the humanisation of care and to the needs of patients understood in their entirety and complexity.
