Abstract:
This study examined the perceptions and experiences of middle-aged and older adult participants in electronic sports (eSports) in Hong Kong (HK), China, by using the social marketing (SM) approach. This qualitative study applied SM approach to the design of a center-based eSports intervention for middle-aged and older adults in HK. Interviews were conducted with 39 adults stratified in terms of age (i.e., 45–64 vs. ≥65 years) and experience with eSports. Ten administrators working in community elderly centers were invited for semistructured interviews. Thematic analysis was performed on the data by incorporating SM. Main findings are presented in terms of five P’s. The product component of an eSports intervention includes the foundation of eSports (e.g., safety, eSports training), suitable games for older adults, and professional equipment (e.g., large-screen devices and motion-controlled Nintendo Switches). The price component comprises affordability and the frequency and duration of each eSport session, and the place component includes accessibility and spaces to play eSports. The promotion component should be educational in nature and can incorporate free trials and gaming days, short films about older adults playing eSports, promotional channels, physical evidence and annual eSports competitions. The people component consists of support from administrators and the center in charge, the availability of skilled program instructors and staff, and appropriate partnering, team sizes and instructor-to-participant ratios. The 5P’s enhance the design of future center-based eSports interventions and can help researchers and practitioners determine which aspects encourage middle-aged and older adults to participate in eSports.

Abstract:
The Hong Kong education system is at a crucial point in its trajectory, and changes to public education also reflect broader social, economic and political changes within Hong Kong and globally. Since the 1997 handover of Hong Kong from British control to China, Hong Kong has struggled to develop its own identity under the One Country, Two Systems premise. One of the compulsory courses in the Hong Kong curriculum known as liberal studies, introduced in 2009, provided a useful departure point for exploring many social tensions occurring in Hong Kong. Exploring education reform through liberal studies explains how these social tensions manifest within education, and how these educational tensions manifest within the broader society. Contemporary trends in Hong Kong's education were examined, including the public exams, the proliferation of shadow education and the expansion of self-financed tertiary education options for Hong Kong students. Tensions in Hong Kong are further explained through the notions of post-colonialism. The liberal studies debate mirror aspects of the broader economic, political, and social tensions as they relate to Hong Kong youth, and Hong Kong society at-large, and this article endeavors to explore these tensions through the lens of liberal studies as it relates to education discourse in Hong Kong. Through a combination of literature review from academic and mainstream sources, the article establishes the groundwork for further empirical work in order to gain a more in-depth understanding of the issues and tensions in Hong Kong.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTSocial inclusion of the older population in employment, housing, social protection and other livelihood aspects was predicted to suffer because of the financial tsunami in Hong Kong in 2008. An expected mitigating factor of the impact on social inclusion was social cohesion, which is the focus of the present study. A total of 1,352 Hong Kong Chinese adults were surveyed in 2009. The results show that social cohesion is perceived in Hong Kong to have mitigated the negative impact of the financial tsunami in terms of support for public policy relating to social inclusion of the older population. These results have implications for sustaining social cohesion as a means to promote the social inclusion of the older population.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the development of one country two systems of Hong Kong over two decades and examine its challenges and prospect. One country two systems is pragmatic and compromise principle and social arrangement for Hong Kong under China sovereignty. It has served to resolve some issues related to the future of Hong Kong after the end of British Colonial rule since July 1, 1997. There are lessons to be learnt as the merits and flaws of the system have been identified in the study as perceived from the perspective of social development. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on quantitative methodology. Data of public opinion polls conducted by various local universities on the development of one country two systems of Hong Kong have been employed in the study. Based on the data obtained from the relevant survey, different aspects of social development of Hong Kong under one country two systems has been examined and explored. Data are current and up-to-date to reflect the social mood of Hong Kong people toward one country two systems over the years. Findings The challenges and prospect of one country two systems of Hong Kong over two decades since the change of sovereignty have been identified in this paper. Hong Kong has remained the moist free market and the third financial center in the world. However, the high degree of self-autonomy as stipulated in the Basic Law has been fading way. There is social discontent of Hong Kong people on social and political grounds and there are high sense of mistrust to both Hong Kong SAR (HKSAR) government and the Central government in Beijing. This will provide a guideline to the government for improving the situation. Research limitations/implications The study is based on data obtained from various public opinion conducted by several local university on the development of one country two systems and how Hong Kong people feel about it. The data are current and up-to-date. However, there will be variation of findings as social mood and perception of Hong Kong people toward one country two systems may change due to the changes of social and political events. With these limitations, one needs to be careful while drawing the conclusion. Yet, the over trend of social development of Hong Kong can be seen. Practical implications The study will provide an overall view and assessment of one country two systems of Hong Kong over two decades after the change of sovereignty since July 1, 1997. The findings and discussion of social mobility, quality of life, income disparity, social and political movement and ethnic identity and its changes in recent years of people in Hong Kong are rather revealing. It will provide a reality check and yardstick for people who are concerned about Hong Kong society and its people under China sovereignty. Social implications The study and its findings will provide a useful guideline for people who are concerned about how Hong Kong people live under China sovereignty. Hong Kong to most of Hong Kong people is on longer a borrow place living under the borrowed time. The former British Colonial rule has been replaced by HKSAR government rule under China sovereignty. There is a high degree of mistrust toward both HKSAR government and the Central government in Beijing. People in Hong Kong keep fighting for democracy and high degree of self-autonomy. Hence, Hong Kong is still a free and open society under China sovereignty. Originality/value The paper contributes an original study on the development of one country two systems of Hong Kong under China sovereignty as perceived from the perspective of social development. There are important findings on social mobility, income disparity and issues of ethnic identity of Hong Kong people. The lessons of Hong Kong will provide an interesting case for people who care concerned about how people living in a former British colony has transformed the society into a thriving civil society under China sovereignty.

Abstract:
Promoting regular physical activity has been considered one of the most important aspects of preventive medicine in recent years. This is due to the fact that tremendous evidence has been found about the positive association between increasing physical activity and desirable health effects. Findings have been summarized in a number of review documents; however, most of these reviews emphasize findings retrieved from research conducted in Western countries. Few papers were found to summarize findings in physical activity and health of the Hong Kong Chinese population. Epidemiological studies revealed that there exists distinct diverse health status among different ethnic groups due to culture, beliefs, genetic makeup, health practices, and behaviors in these highly diverse groups. This chapter reviews what is known about the association between physical activity and health in the Chinese population of Hong Kong. Current health issues including coronary heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, and so on, that are specific to the Hong Kong situation are reviewed. Moreover, findings in physical activity participation levels of Hong Kong adults and children are introduced. Results indicate that the associations between physical activity and health found in the Chinese population of Hong Kong share similar trends as those reported in Western countries. Three quarters of Hong Kong children and adults are not physically active enough to achieve health benefits. The physical activity level for the Hong Kong Chinese population remains low. The need for promotional and intervention programs on physical activity participation is pressing.

Abstract:
IntroductionThe aim of this paper is to analyse shifting themes in the meanings of Hong Kong popular songs relating to ideological and political changes in Hong Kong since the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident (TSI). In particular, the paper examines the relationship between Hong Kong and the People's Republic of China (PRC) concerning the transmission of Hong Kong popular music, and argues that Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese popular musics articulate fluctuating political meanings. Attention will be focused predominantly on the lyrics, but some aspects of the music are also invoked. After highlighting the political and cultural relations between Hong Kong and the PRC, I discuss the social transformations and the struggles for democracy delineated in Chinese popular music during the 1989 TSI. This is followed by an examination of the intensification of the conflict between the PRC and Hong Kong over the dissemination of popular songs carrying democratic messages in Hong Kong. Finally, the paper considers the rise of patriotism and/or nationalism through lyrics rooted in the notion of educating Hong Kong Chinese people into accepting the cultural and political identity of mainland China, and the promotion of popular songs in the official language of the PRC, Putonghua, since the late transitional period.

Abstract:
Objective: To review the psychosocial aspects of Chinese families with Huntington's disease (HD) in Hong Kong. Method: The psychosocial aspects of five Chinese families in Hong Kong were studied with in-depth interviews and detailed analysis of case records. Results: Patients with HD are found to suffer from certain specific psychosocial adversities, including marital disharmony, social stigma and increased suicidal risk in those with relatively well-preserved cognitive function. A low request rate for presymptomatic testing for HD is also observed among these cases. Conclusions: Though the genetic defect in HD is universal and cuts across cultures, the problems faced by these patients and their families are never the same. Despite limited local experience due to a much lower prevalence, Chinese HD patients in Hong Kong are found to have specific needs that emerge from their ethno-historical background.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter will show how the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), a sports, gambling, and charitable establishment, filled the institutional void in colonial Hong Kong, an embryonic civil society. It gives new insight into the potential of a civil society organisation to form an institutional base for the elite. The HKJC provided a platform for the elite to build and facilitate interrelated networks, revealing the integration and more specifically the reproduction of the elite in Hong Kong society. The elites played multiple roles as social and economic leaders-cum-politicians in the oversimplified state-society dichotomy, also bridging the gap between the ruling regime and society. However, in the run-up to the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, the elite formation and composition and political situation in Hong Kong society started to change, thus challenging the role of the HKJC in contemporary society.

Abstract:
AbstractThis introductory chapter positions Hong Kong as a unique case to rethink the intricate relationships between politics and popular music in the wider context of the globalised times where collective collection and creative practices are increasingly connected and mutually constitutive. It does so by first presenting to the readers Tat Ming Pair, an electronic duo formed in 1980s, during the so-called Golden Era of Cantopop in colonial Hong Kong. Commercially successful and critically acclaimed—thus regularly and currently censored in mainland China—for their engagements with social and political issues, Tat Ming Pair remains active and relevant especially through their live concerts in the last decade. Chapter 1 will elucidate why an inquiry taking the duo as its lynchpin serves to address the central question: How (far) does music impact on politics, and how (far) does politics impact on music? We will then expand our ideas of writing pop and politics in tandem with writing the past, the present and the future—interlaced with a colonial and post-colonial account of Hong Kong, a rally to resilience and activism, and a dialogue with hope and future, all very makeshift. After outlining the theoretical underpinning, this introduction continues to align our inquiry to the growing body of scholarship that seeks to de-Westernise popular music studies, a field of knowledge production persistently dominated by Anglo-Saxon experience and publications. Finally, this unusual attempt to tease out the empirical and theoretical potentials of one single popular music formation in a book-length study, covering not only its creative output (music) but also the production and reception aspects, will be put forward as a methodological intervention, a possible alternative approach to study popular music. The introduction ends with presenting the organisation logic of the book and the gist of the subsequent chapters.

Museums offer education and enjoyment to the public through exhibitions and public programs, but what happens behind the museums can be a mystery. Thus, this study uses the visit to conservation laboratories as a behind-the-scenes tour to illustrate the conservation practices at public museums in Hong Kong and thus potential digital transformation. The value chain analysis was used to systematically exanime the environment and operations of the conservation process in depth, focusing on museum education and extension activities. Lacking human resources, safety, and access constraints often limited the capacity to offer such tours. Some suggestions on digital transformation using contemporary information and communication technologies (ICTs) were proposed for engagement improvement and expanding the audience. Scant studies research how such conservation tours facilitate learning and engagement with visitors or analyze museum operations with value-chain analysis for digital transformation, especially in East Asia.

Abstract:
The Chinese government has been promoting reading education recently, as previous studies showed reading improves students' academic performance. More citizens with higher academic achievement could contribute more to developing more advanced technology. Thus, the National Reading Plan is established to give guidelines for school libraries to cooperate with NGOs in setting up reading programs. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a reading curriculum in increasing the intrinsic and extrinsic reading motivations of disadvantaged students in rural areas and selects Reading Dreams Foundation, a charity funding from Hong Kong to serve rural China, as the case. This study uses the concepts of the 6C's of motivation (i.e., choice, challenge, control, collaboration, construction meaning, and consequences) for evaluation. Traditional and technological means are reviewed in the core reading lessons, library, and afterschool activities. Abstract:
Abstract This chapter investigates English language policy and practice in Hong Kong and Macau. The two Special Administrative Regions (SARs) of China share similarities such as colonial histories and a multilingual policy. However, with different colonizing languages (English and Portuguese, respectively) and the different status and usage of the English language, the SARs part ways concerning English-related policy and educational practice. This chapter reviews the policy governing the English language in the two contexts and analyses its enactment across levels of education from the primary to the tertiary, on aspects including the medium of instruction, textbooks and language assessment, and human resources management. It also discusses how the policy interacts with the parallel policies and wider geopolitical and social contexts. The implications from the issues highlighted along the way such as educational equity conclude the chapter.

Abstract:
Among the multi-dimensional social aspects of aging, intergenerational contacts and relationships between older and younger people will be the focus of this chapter. Underpinned by a study that sought to address and reduce ageism, this chapter discusses the respective roles of direct and indirect intergenerational contacts and their associations with the attitude and prosocial behavior of younger people towards older people. This chapter aims to provide initial evidence about the related processes, mechanisms and relationships involving the older individuals and young people in our society. Valuable insights and synergistic efforts will be provided in how the governments, schools, private and community groups, and the media will all have an integral part to play in applying the knowledge of intergenerational contact to combat ageism towards older people. Future research is needed to better integrate the processes, mechanisms and changing relationships between generations to serve the aging population of Hong Kong.

Abstract:
When we read or talk about Taiwan, we attribute a number of ideas and thoughts about a distant island from Europe which was one of the well-known East Asian economic miracles, the so-called Asian new industrialized economies (ANIEs), together with Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Republic of Korea (ROK). The rich bibliography describing and analyzing the background of the spectacular economic development of these economies also mentioned these famous fours as tigers, dragons and ANICs (Asian newly industrialized countries). No need to say, the latter is not punctual, as Hong Kong—contrary to Singapore and the ROK—is not a country, but since 1997, a special administrative region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China. Moreover, with the exception of a few countries, Taiwan is also not recognized as an independent state, but as a part of China. Members of the European Union and all other significant powers in the world consider Taiwan as an important entity in terms of its economic performance, and in fact, with its own currency and financial and corporate system, Taiwan has its own economy, but in the international political arena, Taiwan is not considered as an independent entity. It is radically different, than it was before the early 1970s, when Taiwan, the so-called Republic of China, represented China in the United Nations’ Security Council. So, for several decades now, Taiwan has to act in international isolation in terms of political relations, but in terms of trade, business, sports, culture, education, and many other fields, it developed a wide range of cooperation with most countries of the world. The relations between Taiwan and the “Mainland”, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have also undergone important changes. Even though Beijing considers Taiwan as a renegade province, the trade and investment relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait became intensive. The PRC needs semiconductors and other state of art technologies while Taiwan needs growing export market opportunities. Nowadays, PRC is far the biggest trade partner of Taiwan, by and large 30-40 percent of the Taiwanese export is purchased by the PRC.The economic ties became really strong, therefore, contrary to militant rhetoric of politicians, PRC has no interest to get the control back over Taiwan by military force, unless the government in Taipei declares its independence.

Abstract:
Organizational Knowledge Loss (OKL) is a significant concern for companies as the loss of knowledge and experience can hinder progress and innovation. This study aims to understand the social structure of OKL. For this purpose, a bibliometric analysis consisting of performance and science mapping analyses was conducted. The results indicate different patterns of influence and cooperation, with Durst emerging as the most influential author. In addition, institutions such as University of Skövde, the University of Hong Kong, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Asian Centre for Organisation Development, and Southwest Jiaotong University are central to promoting cooperation between different research institutions. Understanding the dynamics of research collaboration networks and the role of individual researchers and institutions is crucial for shaping the landscape of knowledge production and dissemination. Future research should consider additional aspects, such as the conceptual and intellectual structure of OKL research. This will allow a more coherent picture to emerge.

Stevens, Quentin. "A History of Protest Memorials in Three Democratic East-Asian Capital Cities: Taipei, Hong Kong and Seoul." In The 39th Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand. PLACE NAME: SAHANZ, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.55939/a5043pmsjd.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines a range of grassroots protest memorials erected over the past 60 years within public spaces in the capital cities of three ‘Asian Tigers’: Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea. These cities grew quickly as their polities rapidly democratized in the 1980s after long periods of foreign and local authoritarian rule. The paper explores the complex relationships between these memorials and their various urban settings, and how these reflect the wider evolution of political authority, social history and values in each host territory. Drawing on documentary research, interviews, discourse analysis and site analysis of over 20 projects, the paper examines two key aspects of the planning and design of grassroots memorials in Taipei, Hong Kong and Seoul. Firstly, it discusses how these memorials’ designs communicate and critique the struggles of civil society against the cities’ authoritarian rulers. Secondly, it analyses the kinds of sites where these grassroots memorials have been erected, which contrast with the cities’ more prominent, government-endorsed commemorative sites. The paper identifies key formal types, commonalities and differences, and historical changes in the ways that citizens in each capital city have developed a post-colonial, post-authoritarian representation of local history through protest memorials in urban spaces.

Abstract:
The design of public space and facilities in a country park aims to serve a wide scope of people with diverse needs and interests. Research on human factors should include users of different ages and capabilities. Children are often a forgotten category of users for collecting views and preferences in public design. Their voices and ideas are seldom heard and heeded. It is crucial to involve children in the design process to optimise outdoor recreational and educational experience in a country park. Playful Public Design by Children is a design research project which involved 1,023 children aged 3 to 18. They were guided to use a human factors (or ergonomics) approach to identify and solve problems in the real-life setting of Shing Mun Country Park in Hong Kong. The design research, spanning from 2019 to 2020, was conceived and co-led by a public design lab of a university and a group of art and design studios for children and teenagers. This paper reports an investigation of children’s perception of, observations on and concerns about the country park and the values underlying these concerns. Different phases engaged children in site research and visual-based design projects. For clarity and more in-depth discussion, this paper focuses specifically on children aged 8 -12. The projects allowed children to participate in observing the inadequacies of current park features such as space and facilities design. Research findings reveal children’s ability to embrace complexity in different design situations as they adopted the role as researcher, designer and change-maker. The common problem-solving strategies among their proposed design ideas reflect their concern for fun, fulfilment, adventure, action and harmony of different users (animals included) in the shared outdoor environment. Their proposed design solutions go beyond existing park design that covers only functional and physical aspects. Children’s perspective addresses other human factors such as psychological, emotional and social needs of different users resulting in an array of whimsical designs, such as zoomorphic gazebos, tree houses and observation towers for star-gazing, bird-watching, daydreaming and quiet reading. The significance of the research project is in the pedagogical practice that reveals children’s inherent creativity, design ability and potential as contributing citizens. The project changes urban children’s perception of nature, design and problem-solving strategies, and parents’ perception of design education in children’s creative development. Through the lens of children, designers can find a more well-rounded view inclusive of different human factors that can optimise users' interaction with the country park environment.
