Full textThis multidisciplinary research explores the mechanisms of the system of representations concerning the figure of the athlete with a visible disability. Since its emergence in the medical field at the end of the Second World War, para-sport has been an indicator of the place of people with disabilities in our society. Initially apart of the hegemonic valid model, Paralympics games are now mega-events of the show business sport, generating symbolic changes that we analyze from 2012 to 2021. Social production and perception of supercrip by mass medias and the general public contain social issues of disabled visibility that go beyond the sport field. The interpretative guides given by the mediatization of disabled athletes influence public view and attitude. They are simplified and operating cultural model that can reach the widest possible audience. Thus, studying the self-building process of representation on the social networks by athletes with disabilities offers an additional change in perspective that completes our exploration. We examined three Instagram accounts of intercultural paralympics French athletes with a nethnographic approach. It showcases a reconfiguration of social links and different ways of self-creation on the Internet. Despite an increasing visibility of disability, the media coverage of the Paralympic Games and the digital identities built on social networks remain within a categorical and normalized logic. To overcome this limit, we have conducted a hybrid and experimental investigation relating to a shared sport practice based on disable-valid mix. With a situated knowledges status, our participative method is a framework of co-practice and co-construction of representations where personal experience and diversity are combined

Full textThis study stems from the biographies of a group of social agents : judo teachers for the handicapped. They are seen in a dual historical setting : the history of "disabilities" related to sport and education; and that of judo and its development. As the study relates the pedagogical conduct of judo teachers to socio-cultural determinants, it emerges as a socio-pedagogy of sport and physical education. It is shown that all social positioning results in certain educative pratices, which in turn contribute to the social positioning of the agent. Expressing a need for recognition and social consideration, positioning is at the root of the dynamic founding of the group. It is also the driving force of certain characteristic educative practices which, when analyzed via the dichotomic pedagogic paradigm of "educator-technician", show that educational relevance is also socially relevant. Those agents most amenable to change are the ones who make use of the greatest number of components of social positioning : trajectory and mobility, training and information, cultural appropriation and social action, as well as educative practices. A socio-educative test concludes the work and suggests a course of action that has been tried and tested in the perspective of the training of future agents

Full textThe practice of excluding and segregating people who suffer from disabilities is now being condemned more widely. Developped countries pride themselves on trying to incorporate disabled people into society. We propose to study what is said about "integration" in political and ideological discourses. We chech what is actually being done with the help of an activity which is acknowledged as helping disabled people to become integrated. We intend to study the relation between discourse and reality. The research consist of the following three stages: 1. To investigate the concepts of handicapology and the new ways of dealing with handicaped people. To specify the options of sporting and physical activity adapted to disabled people. 2. To establish variables for a survey showing how heath and social workers view the process of integration. 3. To create a workable system to monitor the interaction between the specialized and the non specialized sectors. The indicators obtained will illustrate a personn's social integration. Sporting and physical activity is used to assess a personn's progress

Full textThe purpose of this study is a comparison, following two ethnographic investigations, opportunities for full integration of disabled people in the boxing in France and of capoeira in Brazil. Courses for this population are open so specialized or inclusive. Through these initiatives, teachers and coaches get a better reputation, better income and an expanded network of contacts. At the same time, there is an integration of disabled people on both sides of the Atlantic, the symbolic violence making a selection through knowledge transfer. Ultimately, the analysis shows that the way to see the world of boxing and capoeira encourages them to act so that a maximum number of individuals is an advantage that it is the institutional actors, students with disabilities, or not and themselves. However, this does not prevent conflicts appear showing the tension between three points of view on disability : segregation, inclusion and selective integration. Indeed, the latter existing in two activities studied use of symbolic violence as the two previous attempts in the opposite way to minimize it

Full textBenefits of physical activity for spinal cord-injured (SCI) persons permits to delay the mortality. So, we proposed them an endurance reconditioning program on a specific wheelchair ergometer. The originality is due to the fact that we proposed a questionnaire permitting to choose the program the best adapted to the subjects. It contains the items concerning the characteristics of the subjects as sex, duration and level of lesion, ways of life. . . Results obtained are pertinent, and we compared them to those obtained with able-bodied (AB). AB obtained greater results, probably due to the fact they are novice in wheelchair propulsion. Then, we compared perceived exertion (PE) of these two populations, and the results suggested that PE could be used to control the exercise intensity during a rehabilitation training program for SCI, similar to AB subjects

Full textIn a previous study, we have found out a warming-up methodology for children suffering from exercise induced bronchospasm (E. I. B. ). This personnalised and field warming-up (WU), by means of short-exercise sets is not EIB - provoking, and can prevent or decrease the intensity of the bronchospasm induced by a seven-minute run : the basic exercise test (BET). We have completed this work by : - the multiplication of the clinical and functionnal field evaluations; the comparison with a healthy children population; the individualisation of the results. Our target is to improve the effects of this warming-up programm, to state indications definitily and thus to better understand physiopathological works of EIB. Thirty asthmatic children and thirty healthy children took part in the study all asthmatic chil- dren presented symptoms of eib diagnosed by tread-mill. Thanks to the evaluation of peak expiratory flow (PEF), we have measured the ability of the bet to provoque attack as well as the wu and its degree of prevention. The bet results confirm those obtained with the tread-mill. The evolution of the pef during the WU shows an irregular bronchial reactivity of the asthmatic children. WU, is not EIB-provoking for more than 80% of the asthmatic children, prevents 80% of them from EIB and allous an improvement of the performances for two third of them

Full textThe influence of physical and sporting activities (PSA) practice on idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is still uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate whether such an influence exists and if so, to determine its characteristics. Two hundred and one teenagers with IS and a control group of 192 adolescents completed an epidemiological questionnaire concerning PSA practice. Those practising gymnastics were more numerous in the IS group than in the control group (P < 0. 001). Moreover, the practice of gymnastics was chosen before IS was diagnosed. As gymnastic activities are considered neither as a therapy nor as a precursor of IS, the distribution observed could be linked to a common factor that both increases the likehood of IS and favors the practice of gymnastics. Joint laxity (JL) may be such a common factor, and was therefore tested on 42 girls with IS and 21 girls of a control group. IS patients, practising gymnastics or not, showed a higher JL than the control group practising gymnastics or not. Futhermore, the groups practising gymnastic activities did not show higher JL levels than the other groups. Children with higher JL could be drawn toward gymnastics because of their ability to adapt to the constraints of this sport. Girls with a high JL may therefore be prone to developing IS. The fact that most teenagers with IS practise gymnastics could be related to a higher JL. Thus, the practice of PSA which not alters IS and allows complete rehabilitation of the adolescents with IS could be recommended by physicians and orthopedic surgeons

Full textThe rechearch shows, through the social representation of handicap in the algerian society, the importance of systems of thought and mental states. The upheaval of this society since its independance has, under the presure of new historical, material and ideal circumstances, considerably influenced the discourse on handicap. But psychological, cultural, economic and social resistances converge and provide explanations which remain weak. With the difficulty of adaptation of the handicapped to the changing norms of social life and the equivocal role of specialized institutions (integrative segregative), the incapacity of the algerian society to integrate the handicapped person with her difference while providing her in actual facts with her right to social and professional insertion is put into evidence. The changes in social evolution induce, inversely to what was expected, an exclusion of the handicapped. Under the pressure of an imitative social evolution, an ethical, religious and community system of effacement whereby to the family responsability over the handicapped is substituted that of the institution, is put into place

Full textFrom the middle of the years 1970, the question of exclusion will challenge the political leaders in load for control for the businesses for the country. This study socio political relating to the period 1981-2002, has the aim of showing, through an analysis compared between two categories of public - handicapped people and - young people of the districts, how the Ministry for Youth and the Sports takes part in the policies of insertion by mobilizing the sport object and its supposed virtues. The first part of work is devoted to a theoretical analysis of the public policies, like with that of the principal concepts characterizing the new social policies. It presents then the problems of the research project and the methodological device used. The second part analyzes the conditions of definition and implementation of the policy of insertion by the sport engaged by the MJS at the national level. From an empirical work, the results show a hierarchisation of public, the reference to various explanatory frameworks of the process of exclusion. They also reveal a competition between the sectors "sport" and "youth" of this administration. .
Bouttet, Flavien. "Organiser la pratique sportive des personnes handicapées : entrepreneurs et dynamiques institutionnelles dans la construction de l'action fédérale." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015STRAG032/document.
Full textIn the late 2000s, many mainstream sports federations are structured to organize a way of practicing sports for people with disabilities. International and local transformations promote this new form of federal action. The transformation of international and local sports organizations promotes this new form of federal action. On a national level, public policies also encourage the federations to be more invested with people with disabilities. However, the federal action organized for people with disabilities must also be understood through the commitment of individual actors. The analysis of seven federations, as institutions, demonstrates the construction of a new category of actors, often identified as 'disability referents' and that can be characterized as entrepreneurs within their federation. These actors, supported by their leaders, invest the organization of with the practice of sports by disabled people and rally a large number of federal actors to develop the projects. Highlighting these entrepreneurs’ social skills is also possible through the analysis of cooperation with actors outside the federation. The study of these relationships with specific federations or with the Ministry of Sports, especially through the “pôle ressources national sport et handicaps”, highlights struggles about how to organize the practice of sports by disabled people. These struggles reinforce the visibility and positioning of the actors involved in the process of federal commitments. They also allow the characterization of a national "sports and disabilities" space in full recombining in front of the challenge of integrating people with disabilities in the sports world

Full textTraditionally it is in the ordinary judo club that disabled judokas train. Nevertheless, historically it is the federations by delegation of disabled public who have had the sporting authority. The process of inclusive institutionalization initiated since the beginning of the 2000s of the disabled sport towards the sporting movement, will redraw the outlines of a previously stable social space. Insofar as the competition delegation is granted exclusively to a single federation, the State organizes a situation of legal monopoly. Thus, blind judo being the only one to integrate the Paralympic games, it becomes by its status, a stake of power between the federation disability and that of judo. The failure of the 2012 Paralympic games challenges consensus about the sports delegation between the FFH and the FFJDA. From a field survey in immersion, we were able to interview the representative actors of the two organizations to understand the controversy and the beginning of controversy in progress. Then, in a second step, the analysis of the interviews and the speeches, using a pragmatic sociological approach, allowed us to highlight the games of arguments deployed by the protagonists, and to reveal the way in which the state power, to through the social figure of inclusion, conditioned the temporality of the debates and its influence on the politics of the national sports federations

Full textThis thesis establishes a link between physical and sporting activities and the attitudes toward disabled people. Foreign students at the University of Strasbourg are put in an intercultural context. In this context, we have demonstrated that some physical and sportive activities, which mainly focuses on health and/or competition, have an impact on the attitudes toward disabled people. Quantitative thanks to an online survey (N=399), qualitative thanks to semi directive interview (N=20) and ethnographic methods were used to establish such link. In order to analyze we have elaborated the notion of “disturbing disability,” based on the Freudian notion of “worrying strangeness,” and the concept of the “uncanny valley,” mainly used in the field of robotics. Furthermore, we have used Hofstede’s concept of “cultural dimension” to uncover a cultural homogenization in the perception of disabled people. This homogenization manifests itself in every culture through some ideological speeches that are present in the representation of physical and sporting activities, and the attitudes toward disabled people. These speeches are not identical, but both are based on the same mechanisms. This work has also illustrated that for foreign students there is a dichotomy between mind and body that expresses itself in every culture, and has an influence in the perception of physical and sporting activities, as well as on disability. Finally, in this thesis we have proven that both athletes and disabled people are seen as “special”, “inhuman” or “heroic” because they both go through the same “othering” process

Full textPowerchair football is the only team sport for people using a powered wheelchair daily. Born in France in the mid 1980s, this practice expanded, and today it is one of the "handisport" activities with the highest numbers of competitors. Paradoxically, it is also one of the least known. The objective of this thesis is to uncover the sports experience of these "severely disabled" athletes. A praxeological view on this practice will enable us to understand one aspect of this experience: the acting body in sporting situation. Then, in a second step, the socio-phenomenological view will be an opportunity to capture the experience "in first person" of these athletes. To do this, we have observed and participated in the life of two football clubs of the Paris area for more than two years. We also conducted 16 in-depth interviews with players and coaches. The phenomenological analysis of these data will allow us to reconstruct the "world" experienced by powerchair football players. Thus, central issues will be highlighted. The problem of classification of the players will be examined. Then, we will pay particular attention to the relationship between the individual and his wheelchair. We finally see that the practice of powerchair football is a particular socialization place, where gender and abled/disabled relationships are questioned

Full textAs it comes to an end, the Second World War reveals the human disaster that the conflict is going to leave behind (Jean-Pierre Rioux, 1980). Everything must be rebuilt : bodies, minds, and the whole country. Logically, the years following the immediate after-war period experience a “health highlight” (Didier Nourrisson, 2002). In a society in which the classification of disabilities, in a logical order that opposes the normal to the pathological, the Direction Générale de l’Education Physique et des Sports (DGEPS) institute “aptitude groups” that will last for several decades. The pupils, after a meticulous summary of some of their body measurements and physical displays, are thus classified into a group where they will be taught a kind of physical education (PE), considered as the most appropriate to their needs. The goal of my studies is to highlight how, in the concept and the facts, pupils considered as “weak” physically speaking will be taken care of by the School and especially how the actors of the PE system will get together to make a cultural offer, mostly unprecedented. Through this period, the word vulnerability doesn’t concern the same group. Indeed, pupils who are vulnerable can be classified by the actors of the school institution in different ways, according to the period chosen : deficient, unfit, disabled or exempted. By that, the vocabulary chosen tells us about the vision and the representations of childhood and adolescence in accordance with what belongs to the norm or the nonstandard. What innovations are Physical Education teachers going to choose to promote a low-limit physical culture from the Second World War ? During the second half of the 20th century, how is the control of the bodies “operated” (Michel Foucault, 1975), as far as weak or disabled pupils are concerned ? Upon which medical “normality” do the actors of the time base their ideas to lead the pupils toward “good” health (physical and psychological), according to precise criteria. In the school of aptitudes, the fact that pupils that could not follow the traditional physical education course had a balanced treatment (or not) raises the issue of a symbolic and/or explicit violence. In order to build my research, I will use archive papers about physical education and physical reeducation. That is to say the “Archives nationales” from Pierrefitte-sur-Seine and Fontainebleau (when the site will open again), the “Archives du musée du sport” (located in Nice) and the archive papers from the “Musée de l’éducation” (in Rouen). From a smaller-scale point of view, the Archives from the Alsace region (department, Hospitals of Strasbourg, etc) would allow me to better understand the question of Physical Education for the young disabled at a more local scale

Full textWhile dealing with the context of the developing countries, the notion of handicap is characterized in a specific way. We carried out our study in the Republic of Guinea, particularly related to the problems of the handicap, more specifically with the disability of inferior members. The main objectives of this research consist in explaining the causes and the consequences of the ascendancy of this type of deficiencies in Conakry. Furthermore, among the other problems analyzed in this work, we are interested in the representations which reflect the handicaps and the influence of traditional and religious beliefs on handicap. Our work is aimed to present the current conditions of the situation and to carry out a significant work on the site. In this framework, we organized two surveys during 2008 and 2009, dealing with approximately 1000 persons. According to our results, the main cause of the deficiencies of lower limbs is associated to the aftereffects of the poliomyelitis and to the presence of the other risk factors, such as the lack of safety on the roads. Furthermore, according to our analyses, about 80 % of the people questioned, belonged to the rural depopulation. Once installed in Conakry, they opt for three modes of subsistence: the practice of begging (48 %), working (16 %) and the family care (18 %). Moreover, each mode seems to determine the participation and the integration of these individuals in the society. Finally, our results show that nearly half of the Guineans believe in the witchcraft and in the malefic nature of the handicaps. Consequently, the faith influences negatively on the interpretation of the handicaps. To conclude, according to our analyses, the majority of the Guineans agrees to define the handicap as a biomedical phenomenon and considers it as an individual and not a social problem
