Abstract:
In the late 1960s, there was a major change in social policy and legislation in developed countries that improved the rights and opportunities for people with a disability in all aspects of society, including sport. In 1992, in concert with the general acceptance of the social model of disability, Australia enacted legislation making it illegal to discriminate against a person with a disability; this encouraged their inclusion into the community (Australian Sports Commission, 2005; Doll-Tepper, 1999; Thomas & Smith, 2009). In order to meet the obligations of anti-discrimination legislation, Australian sport organisations became active in preparing policy frameworks to guide and develop programs to improve access and hence participation by people with a disability. Much of the literature has focussed on constraints to sport participation, but few studies have reported the influence on, or outcome of, these policy development processes on sport generally, or on the inclusion of people with a disability at a club level. By examining those Western Australian sport organisations identified as active in providing opportunities in their respective sports for people with a disability, this study aimed to address this gap in inclusion research. This study reviewed the process of policy development used by Western Australian State Sport Associations (SSA) and investigated the influence this process had on the inclusion of people with a disability in sport at a club level. A qualitative methodological approach was chosen with semistructured interviews (with SSA and club representatives) and document analyses of state and national sport organisation (NSO) policies that related to the inclusion of people with a disability. Purposive selection of the initial study participants, SSAs, was used to identify those actively attempting to include people with disabilities in their sports. Representatives from clubs which were known to be inclusive were also identified during the semi-structured interviews with the SSA cohort. This approach focused on the experiences of those who were actively involved in the policy development process, as well as those active in the delivery of programs for people with a disability. The personal knowledge and experience revealed by all who were interviewed, was analysed using content analysis, and the relevant policy documents from the national and state sport organisations were analysed by matrix analysis. The findings reveal that the SSA and NSO policy documents that relate to the inclusion of people with a disability in sport have similar content; however, the policy development processes vary, and do not follow the theoretical policy development frameworks suggested in the literature. There are many variables, both ‘top down’ and ‘bottom up’ that influence the process of policy development, such as the incentive of government funding and direction provided by NSOs; and there being individuals in the sport organisations who are prepared to drive the policy process and its implementation process forward. This study found that although SSA policy development processes result in limited outcomes at a club level, when a sport organisation goes through a process it makes a commitment to include people with a disability. This in turn raises the organisation’s awareness of ways and means to include them into mainstream sport or specific programs. While several of the sports were active in conducting separate programs, specifically for people with a disability, the flow down of the influence of the policy development to clubs from the national and state level appeared negligible. There was also little coordination and engagement of SSAs and their affiliated clubs when planning and conducting programs for people with a disability. This study proposes a modified approach whereby sport organisations can follow a realistic policy development pathway to create desired change. Moreover, this study reveals the complex environment and stakeholders involved with the inclusion of people with a disability in sport.

Abstract:
This research enquiry critically examines correspondences between participation in sport with the enhancement of social inclusion for young people classified as, or 'at-risk' of becoming, 'NEET' (Not in Education, Employment or Training). Whilst policy interventions to develop social inclusion within such populations often accentuate the accumulation of three forms of capital - namely human, social and positive psychological - existing literature highlights a paradoxical relationship in respect of sport being utilised in this educational manner. Consequently, some scholars suggest that participation in sport can contribute to enhanced social inclusion, whilst other contend that such participation merely produces conforming citizens who reinforce the values of the dominant neoliberal discourse. As a context to explore this paradox, the enquiry examines Sport for Change, a Comic Relief initiative, implemented within five boroughs in East London. As an emblematic exemplar of programmes designed to utilise sport in an instrumental manner to enhance social inclusion, this case presents clear potential for exploratory insights which may offer the basis for correspondences to emerge pertaining to programmes containing similar ambitions. Framed by a realist evaluative philosophy, the research consisted of semi-structured interviews conducted with 22 individuals who were associated with this specific iteration of Sport for Change. The research engaged people at various junctures of the implementation chain, most pertinently ten young males who participated at two of the sports clubs who were recipients of the intervention. The findings of this enquiry gleaned insights into the disconnected 'life-world' of young males who reside on urban residential estates, highlighting how membership of a sports club enables acceptance by a recognisable and legitimate social institution to be obtained, to initiate the process of social inclusion, and forge the trusting inter-personal relationships upon which human, social, and positive psychological capital can be developed. Consequently, the research enquiry argues that rather than the act of sports participation itself, it is these relationships, formed with club personnel who possess a community consciousness, that are critical to the enhancement of social inclusion in young people.

Abstract:
Sports are seen as an ally in promoting social inclusion. As such, governments in various countries have developed sports projects for low-income populations, especially children and young people. However, the objectives of these projects typically exceed their capacity to address social issues by overestimating the potential impacts of sports. In addition, the processes for evaluating social sports projects are still incipient. As such, developing evaluation processes for measuring the effects of these projects has become essential for justifying the public investments, recognizing good practices and being accountable to society. The Segundo Tempo Program (PST), a social sports projects of the Brazilian Ministry of Sports, has worked in partnership with local governments nationwide since its creation, in 2003. Given the importance of the PST, the purpose of this study is to analyze the program’s goals and evaluation processes from 2007 to 2017 and to suggest impact indicators. The study is qualitative. Regarding the research procedures, semi-structured interviews were conducted with PST teams. To analyze the information, the content analysis technique was adopted. The study identified that, over time, the PST’s objectives have undergone changes and adjustments. Furthermore, an expansion in literary and scientific production on the PST was observed, and the program’s pedagogical capacities were adapted to encompass issues related to the day-to-day activities of centers. Expansion also was observed in the number of agreements, the importance of developing an evaluation process and, in 2015, the creation of the Pedagogical Evaluation Team Today, the PST Pedagogical Evaluation Team is developing evaluation processes focused on pedagogical training, on improving the quality of classes and on the self-perception and competency of students. The indicators most cited in the study are related to the PST’s direct impacts, given better alignment with the program’s objectives and the possibility of more accurate measurements. Accordingly, the implementation was suggested of a stratified evaluation process that takes into account the fact that centers with better infrastructure and better-qualified human resources present conditions that allow for a more complete evaluation and ensure a higher likelihood of their objectives being met. In conclusion, the PST’s managers demonstrated constant concern with realigning objectives with the actual possibilities of a social sports project, and shifted their focus on developing a structured evaluation process supported by the creation of a pedagogical evaluation team focused on developing an evaluation system that takes into account the conditions of each center and its human resources. With the implementation of these evaluation instruments, it is believed that the PST will present the conditions for rendering an account of its social contribution to the country and for ensuring the program’s perpetuity and growth.

Abstract:
The thesis puts forward the problematic situation in the very urban center of Ankara with an analytical method to investigate the roots of several problems. Building its argument on historical facts, in depth observations, and political, social, and urban analysis, it proposes a rational basis for the rehabilitation of 19 Mayis Sports District, mainly focusing on the means of elevating the physical quality through the capacity of social inclusion concerning the sports activity settings and places in the region. All in all, the basic argument stands on the belief that the spatial basis of the 19 Mayis Sports District and the neighboring urban tissue around it might be re-defined and rehabilitated, if only its historical, political, ideological, and socio-cultural bases are redefined. Therefore, the study searches for rehabilitation of the 19 Mayis Sports District in Ulus, Ankara, by adapting and integrating sports with other cultural collective practices, and defining it as an alternative life-style for citizens. Because the district lays on the second division of Atatü
rk Culture Center Region, a sports culture and its policy should be defined and designed for to amend that division of the region by preparing a principal master plan for the region and for the division.

Abstract:
The case study highlights the evaluation of one campus recreation center in terms of its inclusive design and operation on the basis of physical disability inclusion. Because of the plethora of barriers in campus recreation centers, those with physical disabilities are limited in their recreation choices and do not take part in recreation as their able-bodied counterparts. This study measures, observers, and evaluates one campus recreation center to determine its level of inclusiveness for those with physical disabilities. The AIMFREE survey was conducted along with observations and extensive interviews with staff that run the campus recreation center and those with physical disabilities that have attended the recreation facility. Results from six interviews, a focus group, the AIMFREE survey, and observations have yielded four main themes. The environment lacks inclusivity that results from financial, attitudinal, and social barriers. Attitudinal barriers to inclusivity occur at three main levels: administration, the staff and users of the facility. As a result, the recreation center is also not socially constructed for inclusivity. The goal of this research is to create change in the studied setting. As a result of investigating inclusivity at one recreation center, several areas of improvement emerged and can be used to implement change at campus recreation centers alike.

Abstract

Our study illustrates how disabled high school students, their assistant and physical education teacher experience inclusion within the physical education. A total of seven interviews have been done to show their experiences. The questions we have chosen are: How do the student, assistant and physical education teacher experience their relationships? How do the student, assistant and physical education teacher experience the physical education? How do the student, assistant and physical education teacher experience inclusion of the student in the physical education?

To illustrate their experiences a total of seven interviews have been done. They were carried out at the students schools, in the environment they are familiar to. The interviews were taped to later be transcribed and the material was analysed in four steps.

In this study we refer inclusion to participate in an entirety. It is also about to considerate the conditions of every individual and to create the possibilities for the individual from this. To work towards inclusion means that everybody involved has to work towards the same goal to reach the best result.

From this study we have seen that the disabled students are included in the physical education, but it can appear in different ways. They participate as much as they can and some exercises are adjusted to their needs. Another aspect to have in mind is that the students want to participate in the physical education. We have only studied two cases and can therefore not make a generalization of disabled students in general, we can just say how it is for the high school students we have interviewed.

Abstract:

My big interest in sports was what shaped my choice of subject for the essay. The purpose of this study has been to explore the social meaning of team sports for functionally impaired persons. In order to fulfil the purpose of the essay I formed following questions: How do the actives experience their participation in team sports? And how important is the social intercourse in team sports to the individual welfare? The methods I’ve used have been qualitative with an ethnographic approach. I have used participant observations and field interviews to gather my empirical material. To analyze this material I have used theoretical concepts such as: group membership, social skills, social interaction, social inclusion and social exclusion. In this essay I have found out that team sports promotes people’s social skills. Therefore team sports are, according to my studies, a beneficial form of social work.

Abstract:
According to the recent Statistics South Africa (2007), there are 668 176 children with disability between 6 – 23 years old of which 337 660 are males and 330 516 females in the Amathole District of the Eastern Cape. This number consists of schoolchildren with visual, auditory, physical, mental, multiple and non- specified types of disabilities. However, there are limited research studies on the challenges around opportunities for children to participate in variety of sporting activities within the school settings. The purpose of this study was to provide a more accurate picture of the barriers against inclusion of students with disabilities in sports, among the identified Special Schools in the Amathole district, Eastern Cape. Data collection involved interviews, questionnaire and participant observation methods. Results showed that 87 percent of the students with disabilities participated in one sport or the other with male student participating more (92.2 percent than the female participants (86.7 percent). Overall, the participation rate was 86.7 percent. Further analysis of data revealed that 44 percent female and 41.5 percent male students agreed strongly that sporting activities are beneficial to their health. 7.1 percent of the sample indicated that their disability prevented them from sports participation. The reported main barriers towards sports participation include; lack of trained personnel; lack of adequate funding; lack of cooperation from parents and guardians and inadequate facilities and equipment. Although students with disabilities were using the limited resources at their disposal to participate in sports, they need support to sustain their efforts.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper was to study what impact sports participation has on young people and how nonprofit people and representatives of sports associations work to counter exclusion and how they contribute to inclusion. We investigated if, and if so how, participation in sports and physical activities can generate inclusion and counteract exclusion for young people. In this study we have completed six qualitative interviews with non-profit persons and representatives of sports associations. We interviewed two people who work voluntarily in sports and four people who have a leadership role in sports associations in a specific municipality. This selection was made in order for us to get a broader picture of how the strategies of non-profit and associations might differ in practice regarding exclusion and inclusion for young people. Based on our respondents' answers from the interviews, we have identified four main themes; expectations and demands, the socialization arena, working methods and the negative and positive factors of sports. We analyzed these themes based on previous research and theory sections and to our purpose and issues. The main conclusion we made was that sport contributes to community, belonging, joy, exercise, reduced risk of physical and mental illnesses and facilitates the integration of newly immigrated youth. Our conclusion regarding negative factors with sports are that young people might develop some form of eating disorder, overload their bodies if they exercise too much and that the risks of getting physical injuries might increase if they participate in sports too much. In response to our last research question, it emerges that economy might be an exclusive factor that sport associations try to prevent in different ways. The associations and the working methods of the non-profit people differ in terms of generating inclusion and counteracting exclusion.

Object of reflections, discussions, conflict, and studies, social inclusion of deaf people is a complex phenomenon which encompasses issues from several features (moral, conceptual, legal, among others). Being the sport a tool for social integration, of course, the deaf realize that there was great contribution of sports practices in the organization and transformation of these individuals' subjective process. Under the gaze of Environmental Education, it is clear that the sport served as an instrument of environmental change in the social sense and subjectivities of the deaf, reaching political and social spheres and can still be used as a resource for future environmental education. In this context, the Brazilian Confederation of Sports for the Deaf (CBDS) is an institution of immeasurable importance to the deaf in Brazil. However, its history is not officially registered nor fully known. Therefore, this descriptive and qualitative study was conducted through interviews, and collecting documents and printed materials; and its aim is to rescue the history of sports for the deaf and of CBDS, marking the major events of the deaf and participation in national and international events, to identify the social contributions of the sport in the lives of deaf people who participate in CBDS, and to evaluate the importance of sport as a means of integration of deaf people in their communities and associations. The founder and first president of the Confederation were interviewed and the information was analyzed by the qualitative content analysis method. It was concluded that CBDS had been through a 30-year process of foundation, since there was the need of having an organization that would gather all deaf people in the national and international practice of sports. Many people have taken part in that history, but the most important ones were Sentil Dellatorre and Mário Júlio Pimentel. That history changed the subjectivity of the deaf people, in a way that they assumed autonomous and leading attitudes towards their own history. Thus, that also reflected in many others deaf movements for big causes, such as the recognition of their language, LIBRAS, and the consolidation of their culture.

Abstract:
Background: Inclusion and diversity have been a frequently discussed subject within marketing for many years. In particular, marketing communication has to a large extent been criticized to not reflect the reality of society. Commercials present images that reflect and shape cultural norms as well as the individual’s attitudes regarding their own identity and their treatment of other people in society. Despite the great interest in diversity and inclusion in marketing communication, there is a lack of studies that connect deficiency of diversity in visual communication, consumers' self-concept, and socially conscious marketing in a Swedish context. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to get a deeper understanding of how sports brands include diversity in their visual communication through socially conscious marketing. Furthermore, the study aimed to contribute with deeper insights regarding marketing communication of visual character from the consumer perspective and how it influences the individual and its self-concept in the matter of diversity and inclusion. Method: This qualitative research applied an interpretive and inductive approach to achieve the purpose. The empirical data was collected through semiotic analysis as well as semistructured consumer interviews within generation Z. Moreover, two sports commercials were analyzed to gather information to answer the research questions. Conclusion: It was stated that sports brands work with the inclusion of diversity in various ways, by including one diverse element such as different people or by including it with a holistic approach including several diverse elements such as different people, objects, environments, and feelings. This means that one commercial does not have a unilateral effect 3on the consumer´s self-concept but that one image can induce multiple feelings. Therefore, the same commercial can make the consumer feel, insufficient, insecure, included, energized, and inspired all at the same time. The result of this study also shows that the consumers feel more included when their values and thoughts are reflected in a commercial than when their physical attributes are reflected.

Abstract:
Sport is a cultural phenomenon that has spread throughout the world (Harvey & Houle, 1994). For youth, sport is perceived as a context that can play a major role in person’s psychosocial development across their life-span (Danish, Petitpas, & Hale, 2007). However, despite the increase in research in this field, very little work has examined how sport may play a role in the psychosocial development of youth with intellectual disabilities (ID). Moreover, an area of study that has also grown related to the lived experiences of individuals living with a disability including ID is social inclusion (SI). Similar to research related to psychosocial development, very little research has been conducted to examine whether the context of sport can foster social inclusion for youth with ID. Special Olympics Canada (SOC) is an organization “dedicated to enriching the lives of Canadians with an intellectual disability through sport” (SOC, 2010, “SOC Mission Statement”, para.1) and may be an organization that has the potential to positively impact the lives of its youth participants. Thus, the purpose of this research was to examine whether stakeholders perceived SO as impacting the psychosocial development and social inclusion. The results indicated that SO, by all stakeholders, is perceived as an organization that is facilitating the psychosocial development of its athletes through the incorporation of strong social support networks and the development of life skills. In addition, SO was perceived as facilitating social inclusion for youth, particularly in the context of school and their surrounding community.

Considering that Parasport is a subject of great relevance, however, little explored and publicized in the communication vehicles and academic environment, this work aims to produce a book-report on athletes from Paraíba who competed in Rio 2016 Paralympics, showing how they started their activities in parasport, their life history, the prejudices suffered, the difficulties due to the deficiency in order to compete, as well as the participation and experience during the games. For the production of this book, the privileged resource was to conduct interviews with five athletes from Paraíba, using as main criterion of choice the fact of residing in the state of Paraiba. The objective of this study is to awaken society by its importance and respect for people with disabilities. The report, in its development, involves a contextual panorama of parasport in the world, in Brazil and Paraíba, it also presents a discussion on social inclusion and legal devices and bases the strategies adopted as: in-depth interview, construction of book-report, addressing the discussions on literary journalism and profiles.

This paper is the product of research work carried out with three groups that practice adapted sports on a regular basis. From an ethnographic standpoint, it discusses the relationship adapted sports and people with a disability have with the institutions that offer such sports. We looked into the types of sport activities the institutions offer, their benefits, how they take place, and what people?s access to these institutions is like. This investigation sought to identify the different ways the work carried out by the groups offering adapted sport activities is seen both by the institutions and the community (of participants). Our research also addresses the issue of accessibility in the streets, public transportation and even inside the institutions. Additionally, it shows how important families are to ensure participants keep on practicing adapted sports, and what the medias role has been. The latter has been giving visibility to athletes with a disability only when there are competitions, like the Parapan and the Paralympics, which furthers the discussion about the inclusion of people with a disability.

Abstract:

A child with functional disorder getting close to starting school has different types of schooling to choose between. Parents and the school of the matter have to agree in consultation. I use the conceptions included and segregated schooling to show different ways attend school. By included education I mean that all students with as well as without functional disorder in a group shall be completely comprised in the situation and not be separated from the group by individual exercises (Fors 2004). A segregated schooling is often pursued in special school where all the students have functional disorder and the education usually takes place in separate buildings (Emanuelsson 2001).

I have completed a qualitative case study of a boy who is 14 years old and has the functional disorder Down’s syndrome and has been placed at a special school his entire schooling. I have interviewed the student and people close to him as well as pursued my own observations in his special school. To actively work out and take good care of our physique is important to all of us but maybe even more for those with functional disorders. My purpose with this study is to find out how a student with functional disorder and people close to him apprehend a segregated education in physical education classes.

My results show that all the respondents are positive to the student’s physical activity and his progress in his physical education classes in special school. But they do find limitations for continued development in physical education in this form of schooling. These limits can for example be that the student’s classmates cannot reach up to his physical capacity. Though, the respondents believe that the environment in the special school gives the student the social security he needs to be able to venture being active in the classes of physical education. Accordingly, people close to the student believe this is a bigger advantage in his physical activity even if he would obtain a more varied physical education in a public school.

As a soccer coach for youths with disabilities and as active soccer players, our thoughts regarding the basic principles of sports where awakened and how it corresponds with the possibilities of disabled youths participating in club organized sports. From that thought came the idea that, with our team as the point of original we should contribute with increased knowledge regarding the experiences of disabled youths doing sports. Using ethnography and co-operative observations we have researched both including and excluding factors that contribute to the possibilities of disabled youths opportunity to do sports. We have been able to distinguish that the youths in question feel that sports can be identity-building as well as give a sense of community. The study shows that the basic principles of sports does not correspond with reality because the lack of availability is the determinant factor.

Abstract:
Traditionally it is in the ordinary judo club that disabled judokas train. Nevertheless, historically it is the federations by delegation of disabled public who have had the sporting authority. The process of inclusive institutionalization initiated since the beginning of the 2000s of the disabled sport towards the sporting movement, will redraw the outlines of a previously stable social space. Insofar as the competition delegation is granted exclusively to a single federation, the State organizes a situation of legal monopoly. Thus, blind judo being the only one to integrate the Paralympic games, it becomes by its status, a stake of power between the federation disability and that of judo. The failure of the 2012 Paralympic games challenges consensus about the sports delegation between the FFH and the FFJDA. From a field survey in immersion, we were able to interview the representative actors of the two organizations to understand the controversy and the beginning of controversy in progress. Then, in a second step, the analysis of the interviews and the speeches, using a pragmatic sociological approach, allowed us to highlight the games of arguments deployed by the protagonists, and to reveal the way in which the state power, to through the social figure of inclusion, conditioned the temporality of the debates and its influence on the politics of the national sports federations

Abstract:

Starting the senior level of the compulsory school often means changing schools and most of ones classmates, an experience that can be both positive and negative. It can be a chance to find new interests, or a hard time with new impressions and higher demands. If one also has special needs, because of a functional disorder, the change of schools can be very challenging if the school does not have the ability to provide for one’s needs. When a student is included in school, it means that the student shall be fully involved in the situation on the same terms as ones classmates (Fors 2004).This essay is founded on a case study made with qualitative interviews about a 13-year old boy with the functional disorder Down’s syndrome and is included in grade 7. Except for the student in question, I have interviewed his teachers, parents and assistants to form an opinion about his physical activity in school and on his free time. The purpose of my work is to investigate if a student with the functional disorder Down’s syndrome gets the opportunity to develop in the subject physical education by being included, and what consequences the included education has for his physical activity both in and after school.

My results show that the student in question has great opportunity to develop, not only by having many different classmates to work out together with, but also by watching them and imitate. Further more the results show that the student develops high self-esteem by being included, and that he has developed both in the subject physical education and on his free time since grade 6.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine if and how the local sports-community saw organized sports role in preventing exclusion and promote inclusion of youth. The study was based on 6 qualitative interviews with representatives from the local sports-community, representatives from 3 clubs, 2 representatives from the local sports-association and 1 representative from the local municipality. Four themes were identified from the interviews and seemed to play a big role in the understanding of exclusion and inclusion within football: socialization and protection factors, conditions, social work and social contributions, projects and solutions. The analysis was based on the theoretical concept of exclusion and inclusion. As a conclusion, all themes played a part in how the local sports-community saw organized football as a tool to prevent exclusion and promote inclusion of youth. Every participant in the study confirmed that organized football could be a socialization-arena. They also had ideas of how sports could prevent exclusion and promote inclusion of youth and act as a tool for social work. In some cases they already did. However, the local municipality and sports-community needs to appreciate and fund these social contributions, projects and solutions in order for them to continue. The also need to start to work together to adapt the football around youth in order to further develop the promotion of inclusion and prevention of exclusion among youth to make it accessible to all.

ENGLISH ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to determine whether or not inclusion opportunities would improve the attitudes of children with disabilities and children without disabilities towards inclusion in physical activities. A total of 75 pre-and 71 post-test questionnaires were completed. Thirty-nine pre-test and 37 post-test questionnaires were completed by participants with disabilities and 36 pre-test and 34 post-test questionnaires were completed by participants without disabilities. All participants were pre-tested by means of questionnaires presented to them prior to each inclusion opportunity and were post-tested by means of questionnaires presented to them on the day of the inclusion opportunity, once the event was completed. All questionnaires were developed by the researcher and have not been used previously for any other study of this kind. Results revealed that: 1. Attitudes in both the participants without disabilities and participants with disabilities changed after attending the inclusion opportunities. 2. There was a reduction in negative attitudes in both participating groups towards inclusion in physical activities. 3. Participants associated the inclusion opportunities with positive categories such as enjoyment, friendship and play. 4. There was a positive response to suggestions of participation in future inclusion opportunities. Based on the results determined, it was concluded by the researcher that inclusion opportunities do improve attitudes of children with and children without disabilities towards participating in inclusive activities, specifically physical activities. Further research in South Africa should however be conducted to determine the long-term effects of participation in inclusion opportunities on children with and without disabilities.

In particular, the thesis examines how and to what extent projects using sport for the purpose of engaging with young people affected by the deprivation of a neighbourhood can add to regenerating the area. The last decade has seen the shift of focus in British urban regeneration policy from physical renewal and economic development to tackling social and community-related matters concentrated in deprived neighbourhoods, such as unemployment, low income, low skills, poor housing, high crime rates, and poor health – in short, social exclusion. Young people who live in these neighbourhoods are greatly disadvantaged in respect both of their well-being at the present time and of their transition into adulthood. Use of sport for the purpose of alleviating these disadvantages is increasingly popular, although conclusive evidence of social benefits of sport participation has been lacking. The thesis identifies four sets of hypotheses that represent how sport may enhance the process of social inclusion; namely, personal development, diversion, social interaction/social networks, and the salience of sport. The normative and analytical framework is developed based on Amartya Sen’s ‘capability’ perspective so as to re-define the goal of neighbourhood regeneration, against which sport-related regeneration projects can be assessed their contribution. An in-depth qualitative case study, based on grounded theory, was carried out in deprived neighbourhoods in the East End of Glasgow. Main findings include: (1) young people in the area were trapped into the vicious circles of leisure deprivation, territoriality, and poor transition into adulthood; (2) the process of tackling youth-related problems in deprived areas can be represented with the analogies of ‘hooking’ and ‘signposting’; (3) a successful structure of a sport-related regeneration project can be represented by a ‘pyramid’, founded on financial sustainability nested in robust organisational base; (4) a project can enlarge its organisational base through a repeated process of ‘ownership’ and ‘evolution’, represented by an expanding ‘spiral’; and (5) sport-related projects are often too small to reach the majority of the ‘excluded’.

Abstract:

The aim of this study has been to examine what students within the sport of skydiving think about their education and the social spirit of the community. The purpose of the study is thereby to answer the study's aim through the following questions; how does group dynamics and social solidarity work within the skydiving community, how do the students feel about group dynamics and social solidarity within the skydiving community, and what factors makes the students feel included or respectively excluded from the spirit of the togetherness?

The theoretical part of the study focuses on group dynamics and groups overall. Further on earlier research within adventure sports and skydiving regarding group dynamics and community spirit is presented. My survey is based on 35 interviews with skydiving students.

The result shows that the community spirit within skydiving sports is described by the students as very special, unique, and strong among the members. Overall the students have a very positive picture of the social solidarity within the skydiving sports but according to some students it also appears difficult to be included as a beginner. Excluding factors can be divided into two parts, educational factors and contacts with instructors, and time when the skydiving is called off for the day when some students do not know where to go, or who to talk to. Including factors are when people offer to help, give the students support or when they are invited to social activities during the evenings. My main conclusion is that the instructors and experienced skydivers attitude towards the students are very important to create a safe environment giving the students the confidence they need to get through their education. This is the most critical factor to make them feel welcome into the sport, and that they are also included within the spirit of togetherness. This key factor decides if they will want to stay in the skydiving community.

Patel, S. "Striking a balance between inclusion and exclusion in competitive sport." Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2012. http://irep.ntu.ac.uk/id/eprint/254/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to investigate the regulatory balance between inclusion and exclusion in competitive sport. Society is obsessed with categorising and treating individuals and groups according to their physical and non-physical differences, such as sex, gender, disability and race. This treatment can lead to the inclusion or exclusion of an individual from the tangible and intangible benefits of society. Where this practice becomes discriminatory, there exists a legal framework in place to protect basic human rights and ensure that people are treated with due respect for their similarities and differences. In a sporting context, the inclusion and exclusion of athletes based upon their differences is often a necessary part of the essence of competitive sporting activity. The protection of the essence involves the establishment of rules and categories that can have an unequal exclusionary impact on certain classes of individual such as some women, transgender, intersex individuals and those with a physical or intellectual disability. The essence of sport also embodies a dominant sporting culture that dictates who is suitable to sport and this can have an exclusionary effect upon particular racial populations. This literature based research, critically analyses a range of legal and non-legal cases concerning sex, gender, disability and race to identify when sporting exclusion is justifiable for the protection of the essence, and when it is unjustifiable and incompatible with equality legislation. A comparative analysis is adopted to examine the consistency and appropriateness of the sport and legal approach to this regulation. It will be shown that whilst a majority of the cases employ a justified inclusive or exclusive approach that is evidence based and in the pursuit of legitimate objectives, there do remain a proportion of cases which are unjustified. This thesis proposes a ladder of regulation, including a sports audit and the establishment of an international anti-discrimination unit, to stimulate improvements in rule making and encourage good governance in this field.

Abstract:
There is inequality between different groups in society in Sweden nowadays, which is a socialproblem. This study has been focusing on a sport association in the western part of Sweden, which is actively working with social inclusion with the aim to minimize this inequality. Thepurpose of this study was to illuminate which factors, from a leadership perspective, arecrucial for the creation of inclusion in their work with youth immigrants in a sport associationin western part of Sweden. The theories of social inclusion, social justice, empowerment andpedagogy of the oppressed has been used in order to interpret the results. The study has aninterpretative qualitative content analysis approach since the material was based oninterviews. The empirics used in the study was already collected by researchers fromUniversity West, the University of Gothenburg, and Halmstad University and was available asan electronic recorded material. The material consisted of an in-depth interview with the mainleader of the sport association and two group interviews with two females as well as two maleleaders. The interpretations of the result led to twelve categories that was divided into threethemes. The first theme, inclusive values, consists of the categories good relationships, familiarity with the Swedish language, knowledge of norms, community, respect anddiscipline and equality. The second theme, leadership skills and needs adjustment, consist ofthe categories "right" staff, commitment and responsibility, boundaries and needs-adaptedactivities. The third theme, good external conditions, consists of the categories goodeconomic conditions and more and better resources. To improve the social inclusion withinthe organization is it necessary to support and develop these factors. There should also bemore focus on involving parents in the association, to create a better balance between theleaders work life and their private life. The three themes interpreted from the result arerequired to achieve social inclusion. When it comes to future research it might be interesting to study other perspective of thesocial inclusion as well as. For example, the perspective of the youths, their parents anddifferent organizations of the society, such as local authorities, schools and police.

Maddocks, Katherine Louise. "Biphobia in sport : sexual identity and exclusionary practices." Thesis, Brunel University, 2013. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7494.

Full text
Abstract:
Research in the field of bisexuality has identified that bisexuals experience a unique kind of phobia, in that phobic responses to their sexual preferences appear from both mainstream and LGBT communities. However, little research in the UK has been conducted within the arena of sport culture to cater for the particular welfare needs of bisexual athletes. As an additional consequence, there is little theorisation of bisexuality available within the context of sport sociology. This research contributes to debates in the politics of identity by exploring a fairly new landscape within sport culture using a Foucauldian analysis of power. Discourse analyses have been utilised to interpret thirteen semi-structured interviews conducted with British athletes on the topics of bi-invisibility and the general problem of homophobia. This research also contributes to discussions concerning the mobilisation of power through discourse – certain discursive practices function to legitimize normative over non-normative sexualities and queer/fluid/bisexual identities are further stigmatized and othered. The main findings suggest that exclusions are mobilised most effectively, ironically, through sport cultural practices of inclusion, in that they are almost exclusively sexual identity-based. Additionally, this study offers a theoretical explanation for the peripheralisation of bisexuality in sport culture which can shed new light on bisexual theory in mainstream culture. It makes important suggestions as to the new directions future research can take in order to advance the current knowledge bases concerning the effects of bantering. This research proposes that practices of bantering can be just as marginalising as those of bullying. In the resultant climate of covert exclusions, organizational sporting bodies could benefit from paying close attention to the disempowering effects of biphobic and homophobic language, whether humorously intended or otherwise. This is with particular respect to youth footballing academies and spectator communities.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is, “to investigate how the sports design process can be used to improve inclusive design practice”. Sports design (or sports engineering) is the design of sports equipment and/or products that support the athlete (or user) in improving their overall sporting performance (Jenkins, et al., 2010) and (Muller, et al., 2007). In sport, the equipment and the athlete must work together to facilitate sporting performance. Despite limited work being undertaken into the sports design process, sports design is evidently highly user centred. However, there is no design process model that captures the characteristics of sports design as a whole (from project initiation to project sign-off).This research captures the sports design process as a whole, using an iterative process of investigation, data collection, development, evaluation and validation, involving industry designers and sports design students. The outcome and contribution to knowledge is the first design process model to capture the sports design process as a whole. The characteristics of sports design captured in the model include user involvement throughout the design process, designer interaction with the user and iterations within design process stages. To address the overall aim of the research, this thesis investigates whether the user centred nature of sports design is applicable in other design disciplines. Given the urgent global issue of the ageing population, this research explores the applicability of the sports design process model to inclusive design – another highly user centred design approach. This research takes a qualitative approach to understanding how the sports design process model could be applicable to inclusive design practice, involving both inclusive designers from industry and inclusive design experts from the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design. An iterative approach of concept generation, development and evaluation was followed, with the outcome and further contribution to knowledge, an interactive framework that facilitates designer-client communication within the inclusive design process. This research will impact client engagement within the inclusive design process, increasing client awareness of inclusive design and encouraging the uptake of an inclusive design approach within industry. The inclusion of a diversity of users within the design process will result in a product that not only meets the needs of more diverse users, but will also be usable to those with greater capabilities.

Fimusanmi, Julie. "Diversity and divergence : perspectives on inclusion through sport for ethnic minority young people." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7020.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the perceived benefits of sport for ethnic minority young people in the context of social exclusion. The broad constructs of social exclusion, are examined whilst drawing together evidence of how individuals experience exclusion in contemporary Britain. Throughout reference is made specifically to a broad spectrum of ethnic minorities and the experiences they endure due to the distinctive combination of socio-economic factors and race. The claim that sport has the potential to address social exclusion through empowering individuals and creating community cohesion is examined. The link between education and exclusion is regarded as one of the key determinants with the potential to either positively or adversely affect the likelihood of ethnic minorities becoming excluded (Parekh, 2000). Therefore understanding the relationship between education and exclusion is key in examining the claim that sport can be used to address social exclusion in a group who are more likely to be excluded from both sport and education in the first place. In order to achieve the research aim a mixed method approach was utilised. By combining a flavour of grounded theory modelling, plus adopting a critical realist stance, provided an opportunity for the subject matter to be recorded and analysed in order to gain an understanding of social life and interaction. The research was carried out within the Arches School Sports Partnership in north Sheffield. By contextualising the programme, it was possible to investigate the young peoples responses and understandings of the sport within these parameters, identify and interview key stakeholders, sports deliverers and community practitioners. Additionally the views of the young people from a range of ethnic minorities were sought through a questionnaire and more detailed interviews. The results of the study illustrated the diverse range of views expressed by individuals. The ethnic minority young people revealed a greater degree of diversity in relation to hyphenated identities, which was closely linked to role or place of religion in their lives, particularly for the Muslims. All of the young people, regardless of their ethnicity, perceived exclusion as part of their lives in one form or another, which was expressed in diverse first-hand experiences, stemming from anti-social behaviour. Their perceptions of the use of sport to tackle wider social issues was the most negative response of all those interviewed. Whilst they believed there is a correlation between sport and social exclusion, and, along with other structured activities, could potentially positively affect their lives, in that if they had more to do in their spare time they would they be less susceptible to being involved in anti-social behaviour and thereby being excluded from society. The adults demonstrated a range in levels of knowledge and understanding of exclusion and how it may affect young people. However, whilst the deliverers were very positive about sport s potential use, citing a strong positive correlation between involvement in sport and improved behaviour management they believed multi-agency working and a variety of different agendas, were a potential conflict to successful outcomes from all young people. In comparison community practitioners were very knowledgeable about exclusion issues and generally positive of sport's potential use, though were keen to promote a multi-agency approach in order to achieve success, and expressed scepticism about sport being used as a purely diversionary tactic In addition to diversity within each group, there were also differences between the perceptions of understandings of young people and adults, demonstrating the degree of diversity in the research findings.

Berry, Katharine. "The effects of Olympic inclusion on sport : the case of trampolining in England." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/9069.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of Olympic inclusion on sport through the case study of trampolining in England. This was considered in terms of changes to elite trampolining, recreational trampolining and school trampolining across the dimensions of organisational structure, funding and support, and underlying policy. This has been achieved through constructing a primarily qualitative piece of work underpinned by a critical realist ontology and epistemology. 45 individuals involved in the sport of trampolining or working in the more general sport delivery system were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Most of the direct implications of the inclusion of trampolining in the Olympics have only affected the elite level of the sport. Adding trampolining to the Olympic programme was viewed as a very positive thing by interviewees involved in the sport because it was seen to improve the status of the sport. The forced merger of the British Trampoline Federation with British Gymnastics received significant criticism from former British Trampoline Federation members due to a perceived loss of power and autonomy. However this amalgamation did raise standards of governance and management in elite trampolining, as did increased expectations from organisations such as UK Sport. As a consequence of the increased professionalisation of the governance of elite trampolining, there is now more tension between paid staff and volunteers. Since the sport has been in the Olympic programme elite trampolining has benefitted from significant funding from UK Sport and also support from the English Institute of Sport and the British Olympic Association. Assistance from all three organisations is extremely ring-fenced and channelled towards the elite. For example, English Institute of Sport support is totally focussed on a very limited number of named individuals who compete at an international level. Funding from UK Sport is dependent on British Gymnastics meeting ambitious performance targets in trampolining and so forms an incentive contract which has dictated the focus within the National Governing Body. Hence the balance between elite trampolining and sport for all has swung towards the higher echelon of the sport from both economic and structural perspectives. Few benefits from trampolining being in the Olympic programme filter down to the recreational and school levels of the sport and those that have tend to be indirect impacts. This is partly due to a lack of coherent governance both within the sport and also in terms of the wider sporting landscape. Support given to recreational trampolining by English Gymnastics, Sport England and County Sport Partnerships, and support given to school trampolining by the British Schools Gymnastics Association, the Youth Sport Trust and School Sport Partnerships appears to be relatively unaffected by trampolining being in the Olympics. Also there are more pressing issues and priorities in recreational and school trampolining which prevented the Olympic inclusion of trampolining having a greater impact. For example, at a recreational level there is often a shortage of trampoline clubs to cater for demand and similarly in schools there is often a lack of trampolines and trained teachers.

The object of study and analysis of this research are the articles published in the Thematic Working Group Inclusion and Difference proceedings Inclusion and Difference of the Brazilian Congress of Sports Sciences, between 2003 and 2013. The general objective is to identify the epistemological bases present in the production of knowledge in Physical Education, from the annals of the mentioned Thematic Working Group, and how these bases respond to the issue of inclusion of students with disabilities. For this purpose, we present how to constitute the relationship between the characterization of the research, the main issues addressed and the inclusion perspectives found in each approach. Using an analytical tool in consonance with the paradigmatic matrix, that points out the technical, methodological, theoretical and epistemological levels. This methodological procedure made it possible to realize, in the 31 articles analyzed, that 90% used the Phenomenological-Hermeneutic approach and 10% used the Critical-Dialectic approach, and has not identified any article used the Empirical-Analytical approach. We found that each level of the instrument used for analysis of the articles made evident the predominance of the approach taken, in other words, in the articles in which the Phenomenological-Hermeneutic approach was predominant, it was observed that the discussion is focused on understanding the phenomena and where these have as a base. In the articles using the Critical-Dialectic approach we note that the discussion was taking as a basis the issues of social context and its alternative processing. Given the limitations found in this research, both personal and time to deepen some debate, it is necessary that further research be done in order to expand and advance the contributions in the knowledge production of physical education, and exclusion / inclusion, pointing out the various conflicts that implies in this context.

Abstract:
This research looks to understand the role digital media plays to inspire and sustain sports participation and how digital media could be used as a socially inclusive tool. The study explores if strategically packaged digital media could be used in a socially inclusive way to increase or sustain sports participation. This would address one of the problems facing sports organisations, as sports participation is decreasing or at least stagnating both in South Africa and on a global scale. This study followed an exploratory, inductive approach, using Self-determination Theory (SDT) developed by Deci and Ryan (1985) as a theoretical framework. The paper looks to understand what research has been done to understand how people are motivated to participate in sport and the proven theories that have been tested (Pelletier et al., 1995) to understand the role of intrinsic motivation has as a powerful indicator of intention. This study made use of a qualitative, cross-sectional design and data was collected through semi-structured interviews with active participants based in Langa, Cape Town. The findings of this study showed the participants regularly accessed digital media in a manner which strongly aligned with the literature and has been shown to increase intrinsic motivation, which leads to action. The findings further show that sports media can be used as a tool for social inclusion, despite the participants socio-economic status they regularly accessed online sports content for motivational and learning purposes. Based on the findings of this research, sports organisations need to consider digital media as a viable and socially inclusive way to sustain or even increase sports participation.

Abstract:
The voluntary based sports movement has for over a hundred years been supported by state funds and seen as an important part of the Swedish society. In the city of Linköping the ethnical and economical segregation has been increasing in recent years and the consequences are reflected in the local sports associations. In Skäggetorp, statistically the most underprivileged district in city, there is no longer any football association offering activities to children under fourteen years old, either boys or girls. Furthermore, girls with immigrant background are generally less involved in the sports movements and efforts are made from both public authorities and other actors to incite activity. This essay analyses the political rationality lying behind the planned and realized interventions and how the actors have been experiencing the processes of cooperation. The empirical material has been collected by interviews with the involved actors. The theoretical framework has been constituted by a theory of construction of problem representation along with theoretical concepts as capital and governance.Main findings consist of a difference of rationality depending on whether the activity is aimed at boys or girls or if it is conducted within the structure of sports associations. Also, associations in underprivileged urban districts are both seen as possible promotors for social change and as subjects in need of help. The system of public allowances for sports associations can only be distributed to projects even though all actors are addressing a long-term approach. This study also shows the challenges that exists within the decentralisation of public administration, governance and cooperation by different actors.

Abstract:
Sports interventions programmes for children have gained popularity in recent years as a response to a number of welfare issues, including rising levels of obesity, declining fitness, academic attainment and delinquent behaviour. Faith in sport to address these different issues indicates that it is seen as an expedient ‘cure all’ solution. However, despite calls for evidence, few studies have addressed the impact of a programme on children’s health, fitness and well-being. This study investigates the impact of a sport intervention programme called “Move It” on (n = 785) participants (11-14 years of age) attending 3 secondary schools in inner city London between 2004 and 2007. Various measures were undertaken to monitor health, fitness, and self-evaluated self-esteem, academic attainment and behaviour. In addition, Case Study was used to understand more about a programme’s implementation at a particular school and to uncover any features that were not apparent in the earlier analysis. Results indicated that, over three years, there was no conclusive evidence of positive outcomes to health, fitness, and self-evaluated self-esteem, academic attainment and behaviour. Moreover the level of engagement of a school was not found to have an impact on quantitative outcomes. However, Case Study evidence indicated that a programme can be managed toward outcomes specifically targeted by the school, such as creating personal development avenues, opportunities for pupils, and improving social cohesion. Findings are discussed with respect to theoretical and policy developments and recommendations for future research are offered.

Full text
Abstract:
Structured to help readers from a range of disciplines, the thesis looks at the creation of opportunities for participation in adventure sport, specifically the development of a postural support for intermediate level performers with spinal cord injury in sea kayaking. The research has shown that it is possible to increase the performance level of disabled athletes in paddle sport through the development of appropriate adaptive equipment, which in turn promotes inclusion and the broadening of opportunities. This research project takes place against a backdrop of national events and developments; notably, changes in UK legislation to do with disability access (DDA 1995), and developments in legislation to do with outdoor safety. The research also takes place against a backdrop of national campaigns, such as the ‘Campaign for Adventure’, and an increasing number of drives to make the UK’s population more active. The broad-based multidisciplinary approach is in line with reported priorities in international disability sport research, while encompassing paddlesport specific criteria. The research takes the approach of design research to develop the product. Initially the reported studies evaluate the design process utilising desk-based research. They then proceed to utilise design methodology in field-based short and longer expedition settings. The design process utilises existing user-centred staged design approaches to explore methods for wider application. The findings reveal that the development of opportunities in adventure sport with disabled people involves engaging with a social mess. The action of problem definition and resolution can be termed in this paradigm as a wicked problem, being that is does not have one clear solution. The information needing to be exchanged in the problem resolution can be considered as sticky, being that the research process takes place in a specialised arena characterised by sparse resources and with a multidisciplinary team. The research has informed the creation of twelve tools to support those practitioners involved in this area. Used from the bottom up or top down, they provide a common language between the participant, coach, therapist and researcher to help educate and inspire each person to understand the true nature of the problem, improve the shared understanding within the team, and thereby reducing the stickiness of the information. The effect on the development of new equipment is to improve focus and user participation, so making it easier to work within the social mess. A new postural support was designed for use by intermediate level sea kayakers with spinal cord injury, the design of which is given in study 9, which is evaluated in study 10. The study suggests that future work in this area should focus on the coordination of sport science support, further exploration of the link between design research and social change, explore the validity of the tools across a broader population, and further develop the design so that the new equipment can be of benefit to the broader population.

This dissertation takes as its object of study the public policy of sport and leisure, particularly public policy of sport and leisure developed by the municipal administration of the city of Goiania from the period of creation of the Municipal Sports and Leisure in 1997, up the year 2013. Through case study of the Program "Caminhando com Saúde" can be observed in the socio-political configuration of the field of sport and leisure in goianiense context, and understand its relation with the social inclusion process. This study is inspired by the Bourdieu studies of, in particular in the field theory to understand the dynamics of institutionalization of certain types of public policy for the field of sport and leisure, coupled with the theory of the public policy process, the model in question coalition of advocacy framework developed by Sabatier and Weible, which argues that the process of construction of public policy is linked to beliefs, values and ideas of actors involved in the dispute by the type of policy to be implemented. Moreover, the work converses with specific theories in the area of sport and leisure seeking to understand the phenomenon of sports and leisure practices associated with social and political configuration of contemporary society and for that, returns to the studies of Norbert Elias, regarding the theory of process civilization, to understand sociogenesis sport and leisure and its influence in shaping modern Western society. About the research methodological process was based on the qualitative approach and exploratory. Was used as the methods and techniques to document analysis, direct observation and content analysis. The application of interviews with the actors involved was held to "Caminhando com Saúde" program, users, physical education professionals and public administrator. Results showed that limitations concern public policies of sport and leisure in the city of Goiânia resulting from various factors, such as the low budget allocated to institutional folder, low interest authorizing body to foster and improve the implemented programs and nonparticipation of technical and community body in the design, implementation and mainly reviewed the policies implemented by SEMEL.

Abstract:
IV.
Under certain circumstances, vulnerable youngsters might experience social inclusion through sport. Since the understanding of such circumstances remains under-researched, the dissertation provides insights into this topic by showing the dialogic evaluation outcomes of an Italian sport-based programme. The results shows that: I. Promoting access to sport through subsidised sports fees, inclusive bureaucracy services and transport are fundamental preconditions to introducing youth to the sports; II. Introducing professionals who bridge the gap between local sports clubs and diverse agencies dealing with vulnerable youth is a fundamental condition that provides increased social resources to youngsters, especially in case of severe social vulnerability. III. Involving sports clubs in training aimed at enhancing their capacity to be inclusive is a meaningful condition to consider since “competition” and “inclusion” are perceived as opposite values that can hardly be integrated into sports coaches work. IV. The experience of inclusion through sport is connected to sport self-efficacy and the interest of youth toward certain sports. The work discusses the role of dialogic processes in the translation of scientific knowledge to practice and vice versa. Results provide action-oriented evidence for sport for development planning and management.

Abstract:
Background: Gender inequality is widespread throughout Latin America, in large part due to a ‘machista’ culture in which women tend to be regarded as inferior to men. In Colombia, especially in low-income areas, women and girls are consistently excluded and marginalized. As a result of this, adolescent girls are susceptible to gang recruitment, teen pregnancy, and substance abuse. In similar settings globally, sport has been shown to be an effective tool for development and for the socialization and inclusion of youth. Few studies have taken place in Latin America, however, and hardly any of them have focused specifically on marginalized girls. This study aims to address this gap in literature by exploring how sport can break down barriers of exclusion and promote inclusion of marginalized, adolescent girls in Colombia. Methods: This qualitative, multi-methods study involved the analysis of data collected from semi-structured and key informant interviews, as well as participant observation sessions. All data collection was conducted in Cazucá, Colombia with participants from local NGO Tiempo de Juego (TDJ). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with adolescent girls between the ages of 11-18 who were participating in at least 1 sport at TDJ. Key informant interviews were conducted with TDJ staff and a guardian of several girls who participate in TDJ. Interview transcripts and participant observation memos and reflections were reviewed and coded to identify themes through thematic analysis. Results: All participants interviewed indicated that sport had a positive impact on their day to day lives. Three main themes and two sub-themes were identified during data analysis: 1) ‘Machismo’ in Colombia with sub-themes: i) Gender Roles and ii) Gender Norms, 2) Exclusion and marginalization, and 3) Empowerment through sport. Most participants spoke about the prevalence of machismo in Colombian society and how gender roles and norms limit the types of opportunities that are available to them. Participants expressed how, although they are marginalized based on where they live, sport provided them with a healthy activity to engage in as an alternative to the negative behaviours that they are susceptible to in their neighbourhoods. Sport provided them with an outlet to escape from their daily problems, and they felt that through sport, they were able to realize their self-worth and gain confidence in themselves. Conclusion: These findings suggest that sport can become a useful tool for promoting the inclusion of marginalized girls through empowerment. While sport was shown to break down some barriers of exclusion, further work must be done to explore its potential role in breaking down gender stereotypes that remain prevalent in Colombian culture. These results highlight the need for more sport programs that focus on marginalized girls in Latin American countries where women and girls remain a neglected population.

Abstract:
By using antisolvent addition, it was possible to obtain symmetrical, ordered and periodic inclusions within RDX crystals. Antisolvent-induced inclusions were found off-centre in RDX, suggesting a growth-linked process to their genesis. The sizes of these inclusions were modified by changing the antisolvent addition method. These size modifications were most likely down to changes in solvent/antisolvent hydrodynamics influencing nucleation rates and subsequent growth rates. By changing the solvent and/or antisolvent, it was possible to modify the inclusion pattern within RDX crystals. This was linked to a change in crystal habitus. Inclusions were found parallel to only certain faces in every solvent/antisolvent combination. These faces were not always the largest, nor were they the fastest-growing. Results suggest that whilst large crystal faces do indeed ease the process of inclusion formation, sufficiently high growth rates of these faces are also required. The formation of inclusions may therefore be the product of solute-supply deficits to the centre of larger faces, amplified by increased solute demand required for high growth rates of these same faces. This perfect combination of adequate face sizes and growth speeds only seems to occur once during the growth process of RDX when an antisolvent is added as an initiator of crystallisation. Eight batches of RDX containing various numbers and sizes of inclusions were produced using antisolvent addition. Gap-testing was employed in order to establish a relationship between increasing inclusion sizes/numbers and increased sensitivities. Low-pressure and sustained shocks were used to determine RDX batch sensitivities. This regime has been previously demonstrated to highlight the importance of intragranular defects such as inclusions on energetic material sensitivities. Whilst the compositions of fluid inclusions in these batches remain unclear, they do not seem to have a profound influence on shock sensitivities. However, it has been demonstrated that doping RDX inclusions with an Infra-Red sensitive solid is possible. This doping has the potential to add extra hot spots within RDX inclusions upon remote activation although this remains untested. The control of inclusion sizes and numbers may not only be useful in the field of energetic materials but also for the pharmaceutical industry. Whilst fluid inclusions may be seen as a nuisance by many, they may also prove to be very useful in the encapsulation of desired compounds

This dissertation, linked to the area of concentration Society, State and Education of the Strictu Sensu Post-Graduation Program in Education - PPGE of Unioeste - Cascavel Campus, contemplates the process of construction of Sports Policies for People with Disabilities, particularly those directed to Physical Disability. The study, through bibliographical, documentary and field research, was carried out having as a start point the following research problem: How does the implementation process of the Adapted Sport Policies for people with physical disabilities occur in the municipality of Toledo-PR? The specific objectives were: a) to contextualize the public policy development process for Adapted Sport, considering international and national relations, particularly from the 1990s, and b) to study the convergences and divergences of public policies of Adapted Sport and the history of ATACAR in the municipality of Toledo / PR. The investigation contemplated the world history for the understanding of the Brazilian parasport context, with emphasis on the associative institutions included as Third Sector, in which ATACAR, as a Civil Society organization, has assumed responsibility as the articulator of Inclusive Policies. The state conjuncture that advocated the division of tasks with the associativism from the years of 1990 was, therefore, a process in which ATACAR is responsible for promoting the inclusion of People with Physical Disability in the municipality of Toledo / PR through Adapted Sport, being also, a policy provider that gives access and permanence of these people in the parasports area. Thus, the study demonstrated that the claims regarding the implementation of Adapted Sport Policies in the municipality of Toledo / PR, specifically through ATACAR, reflected the principle of the "Organization for Cooperation" model, which is one of the forms of organization of the Brazilian parasporting, that is, in the practice of adapted sport, it aims at cooperation among wheelchair athletes of the association.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to understand how three selected football associations in three counties in Sweden work to include children and adolescents with disability in the age of 7-20 in their organization.  For this study we have used a qualitative method. The data have been collected through using semi-structured interviews with coaches and representatives from the board. When analyzing the data, we used Charles Tilly's theory Durable Inequality and research within the area of inclusion within sports, the significance of activities and the inequality within sports. The conclusions of the study showed that there was a stated lack of knowledge in the associations when it comes to their work with young people with disabilities and also in their work with the policies. Though there was a mutual feeling of insecurity we noticed that in their work with coaching young people they adapted the training session in order for everyone in the team being able to participate. We also saw that the inclusion of the children and adolescents with disabilities varied between the three football associations, how they choose to model their activities. Two of the associations had separated teams and we analyzed how those teams were different in the aims for the teams and in other ways.

Abstract: The school inclusive process regards not only the opportunity of performing teacher-proposed activities in the class, but also with students participating in and creating a social relationship network with their classmate. The aim of this study was to analyze the inclusive process of children with disabilities in physical education class, identifying their obstacle and facilities to keep up with classes contents and with building a social network with their peers. Students from a Brazilian public school with and without disabilities served as subjects of this study during 2007. Systematic observations of physical education classes were performed during school year, as well as application of a sociometric test in two different moments. Systematic observations aimed to identify obstacles and facilities related to the classes contents, peer and teacher relationship and with class environment that students with disabilities found. Sociometric test was designed to assess social structure developed during physical education classes. Students with disabilities did not show difficulties to understand and perform proposed activities. However, they did show difficulties in building reciprocal social relationships with their peers. Results indicate that inclusive process with these students did not really happen, hindering children with disabilities to fulfill educational goals proposed for physical education classes.

The goal of this work is to analyze how the practice of sport, in particular the mode of athletics, contributes in the process of social inclusion of young people accommodated in the Houses Homes Morada of Betinho, Manaíra, and in the House of welcome Men of the city of João Pessoa, emphasizing the transformations that have occurred in their lives. The methodology used in this work was social search is a process that uses scientific methodology, by my own which it can gain new knowledge in the field of social reality. Using the qualitative approach, which according to Thomas and Nelson (2002), since the early 1980, internationally, guiding important research in physical education. According to these authors, researches are carried out mainly in environments of everyday life, such as schools, gymnasiums, other sports facilities etc. The methodological feature has used a diving actually studied and triggered the involvement of subjects in problematic situations experienced. From a theoretical point of view, spoke about the principles of Social inclusion and Social exclusion, while discussed the legal bases of institutional shelters nationwide and in the municipality of João Pessoa. The results obtained revealed that the aspects of social inclusion are very clear for children and adolescents. When we investigate the sport within and outside the shelters, we note that, due to serious problems and difficulties faced by children and adolescents, the effective practice of the sport has an engine that achieves full purpose, in which sport they propose within the institutions, which is the social inclusion, even the shelter being a source of exclusion.

Abstract:
Research incorporating behavior analysis to improve sports performance has shown that various feedback types (e.g., video feedback, public posting) can increase skills. Recently, auditory feedback has been shown to be effective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of auditory feedback to improve dance movements of children with disabilities using an ABAB design embedded in a multiple baseline across participants design. The target behaviors were fundamental dance skills, individualized to each student, and scored using a task analysis to calculate the percentage of correct steps. The results showed that auditory feedback was valuable in increasing the specific dance skill for each student. Although the skills decreased during the second baseline phase, the skills increased to their respective levels following treatment withdrawal.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explore how sports journalism can include and/or exclude athletics from a national community. This study put emphasis on finding patterns from articles by Swedish sport media on non-ethnic Swedish athletics. The theories central to this study are ethnicity and nationalism, as these concepts contain reflections on why certain groups of people are excluded and/or included. Norman Faircloghs critical discourse analytical model has been selected for the study method that analyzes texts in three levels: the text level, discursive practice and social practice. Four non-ethnic Swedish athletes have been chosen to explore how they were portrayed in the media. Data were collected from Swedish newspapers, sport websites and blogs that portrayed the selected athletes.
