Abstract:
Book Summary: It is an essential skill for any strength and conditioning coach to be able to reliably assess the physical performance of their athletes and communicate the results and their implications to performers and coaches, alike. Performance Assessment in Strength and Conditioning is the first textbook to clearly and coherently suggest the most appropriate and reliable methods for assessing and monitoring athletes’ performance, as well as including detailed sections on testing considerations and the interpretation and application of results. The book explores the full range of considerations required to reliably assess performance, including questions of ethics and safety, reliability and validity, and standardised testing, before going on to recommend (through a comparison of field- and laboratory-based techniques) the optimal methods for testing all aspects of physical performance.

Cattaneo, Andrea. "The application of EU competition law to sport." Thesis, Edge Hill University, 2017. http://repository.edgehill.ac.uk/9943/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis has looked at the application of competition law of the European Union to sport. The main objective of the thesis is to understand whether the European institutions have adopted a sport-specific approach when applying competition law, and to identify problems connected to it. Sport presents a number of characteristics that differentiates it from any other industry. It is an area where private and public interests arise and demand protection. These range from private economic interests, to the protection of cultural aspects, health and well-being, and employment. The European Union has moved from an approach according to which sporting rules were not falling under EU law, to one where any sporting rule is capable of having economic effects and could therefore be assessed. In parallel, Sport Governing Bodies have stopped rejecting the intrusion of EU institutions in sport, and have accepted that the role of the authorities could be channelled to guarantee an area of autonomy. The thesis provides an original contribution to the body of knowledge in assessing the intensity of the economic analysis adopted by the EU institutions when examining conduct of Sports Governing Bodies. This aspect is particularly connected to the specific characteristics of sport, and of the sporting market. The research suggests to adopt a system of governance that is more collaborative and inclusive, and that is capable of representing the needs and protect the interest of all the industry stakeholders. This would require a greater involvement of the stakeholders in the rule setting and enforcement procedure, in order to channel the expertise of Governing Bodies and restrict the tendency to abuse of their regulatory powers.

Abstract:
The trend of interacting with a second screen while watching TV has evolved over the past years with the increased usage of smartphones and tablets. One program genre in which second screen usage is common is sports. The increasing second screen usage has made it challenging to keep viewers engaged in the content being shown on the TV. A possible solution to this problem is program-specific second screen applications that serve to complement the TV content and give an added value to the viewer. This paper aims to identify usage patterns of a program-specific second screen application, used during broadcasts of live hockey games. The application consists of a feed that contains posts related to the game such as comments and videos posted by sport profiles and editors, and polls that the viewer can answer to see other viewers’ thoughts about different situations in the game. Moreover, the paper analyzes what factors affect the usage patterns and discusses how the findings could be used when developing and managing the content of a feed-based second screen application during a sports game. To identify the usage patterns of the application a triangulation approach was used. Five user observations, directly followed by complementing semi-structured interviews were conducted during five separate live hockey games broadcast on TV. The results show that the usage patterns of the application are mainly affected by the excitement and the different parts of the broadcast (game time, studio analysis and commercial breaks), the different features of the application and the usage of other applications. Moreover, the results highlight the importance of feeling connected to other remote viewers of the game through the application when watching a game alone.

Abstract:
Sport performers encounter various stressors as part of their involvement in competitive sport, and their ability to respond effectively to these demands is likely to dictate whether they thrive, manage, or succumb in competition. The purpose of this thesis was to provide the first systematic exploration of thriving in sport. To achieve this, extant thriving literature is first reviewed and a conceptualization of human thriving proposed. Namely, it is suggested that thriving is the joint experience of development and success, which can be realized through effective holistic functioning and observed through the experience of a high-level of well-being and a perceived high-level of performance. Four empirical studies are then presented which examined and compared the experiences of sport performers who thrived in competitive encounters to those who did not. In Studies 1 and 2, results of factor mixture analysis (see Chapter 3, N = 535) and latent class growth analysis (see Chapter 4, N = 175) supported the presence of a unique thriving group and identified possible relationships with personal enablers (e.g., resilient qualities) and process variables (e.g., basic psychological needs satisfaction; BPNS). Study 3 (see Chapter 5, N = 51) extended these findings using a diary study design, demonstrating that pre-game levels of BPNS and challenge appraisal positively predicted in-game functioning; although no evidence was found to support the presence of biomarkers for thriving. Study 4 (see Chapter 6, N = 18) utilized mixed methods and revealed that, although many of the themes were similar for sport performers in thriving and non-thriving groups, substantial differences existed in the expression of these codes and in the relationships between them. Overall, the findings in this thesis make a meaningful advancement to the human thriving literature, and provide psychologists with an initial foundation upon which they can develop interventions to facilitate thriving in sport performers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Track and field is a traditional instructional unit often taught in secondary physical education settings due to its history, variety of events, and potential for student interest. This article provides an approach to teaching this unit using the sport education model (SEM) of instruction, which has traditionally been presented as a model for team and dual sports. The application of the SEM to this individual sport provides teachers with an opportunity to provide their students with an authentic, engaging and festive environment in which to learn a sport that has been around for centuries.

Mullineaux, David Ross. "Issues in the application of statistical techniques in sport and exercise science." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2002. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20766/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to demonstrate the benefits and limitations of selected techniques used to analyse data derived from , sport and exercise science research. Although statistical techniques are easy to access through software packages, supporting literature about their appropriate application is less common. Many researchers are unaware of the full benefits or potential pitfalls when using these techniques. An understanding of the appropriate use of statistics will benefit the researcher by maximising the potential for analysing, interpreting and applying data correctly. Furthermore, it will minimise wasted effort or dissemination of inaccurate information through incorrect analyses. In this thesis examples are derived from fifteen published articles based on five topics that illustrate the appropriate use of particular statistical techniques. Firstly, the use of 'agreement' and 'least-products-regression' as appropriate techniques for comparing repeated measures are demonstrated (e.g. Mullineaux et al., 1999). Both techniques revealed that over two separate days the peak-torque-extension of the knee of healthy females is unreliable. Secondly, the use of 'allometric' scaling of body size differences that should allow for meaningful comparisons between participants' measurements is explored (e.g. Batterham, George and Mullineaux, 1997). Results showed that left ventricular mass is related to fat free mass to the power of 1.07 (0.92 to 1.22; 95% Cl). Thirdly, mathematical modelling is used to explore a theory that would be difficult to test empirically (e.g. Payton, Hay and Mullineaux, 1997). Results revealed that body roll contributes substantially to the propulsive force in front crawl swimming. Fourthly, logistic regression is used to predict group membership from the combined effect of several independent variables (e.g. Mullineaux et al., 2001a). It was found that the likelihood of participation in adequate physical activity to promote health can be strongly predicted from six variables. Lastly, in an invited review paper, key features in the application of research methods and statistics in biomechanics and motor control are highlighted (e.g. Mullineaux et al., 2001b). These published papers form a body of work that will facilitate a greater and more appropriate use of selected statistical techniques in sport and exercise science.

Abstract:
Due to the broad spectrum of physical characteristics necessary for success in field sports, numerous training modalities have been used develop physical preparedness. Sports like rugby, basketball, lacrosse, and others require athletes to be not only strong and powerful but also aerobically fit and able to recover from high-intensity intermittent exercise. This provides coaches and sport scientists with a complex range of variables to consider when developing training programs. This can often lead to confusion and the misuse of training modalities, particularly in the development of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. This review outlines the benefits and general adaptations to 3 commonly used and effective conditioning methods: high-intensity interval training, repeated-sprint training, and small-sided games. The goals and outcomes of these training methods are discussed, and practical implementations strategies for coaches and sport scientists are provided.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of participation in a single sport small-sided games (SSG) programme compared to a multi-sport SSG programme on the physical fitness, gross motor coordination, soccer skills and application of tactics during soccer games of grade four children from a disadvantaged community. Two intact classes of boys and girls (n= 39 and n=40) participated in a six-week, 2x per week intervention programme. One class specialized in soccer and the other engaged in a diversified programme where they sampled hockey and team handball along with soccer. In terms of pedagogy, both classes followed a deliberate play model with its focus on intrinsic learning and non-intervention by a coach. Data were collected during pre-, post- and retention test periods. Both boys’ groups achieved significant improvements in their muscle endurance-push-ups, power and aerobic endurance on the retention test. Only the boys who participated in the multi-sport SSG programme achieved a significant improvement on their muscle endurance-sit-ups. The girls from both groups showed significant improvements in all physical fitness variables, with the exception of the girls in the muti-sport programme who did not achieve a significant improvement in their speed. Significant improvements were experienced by all groups for gross motor coordination and soccer skills. The boys in the soccer SSG programme demonstrated improvements in both offensive and defensive tactics while the boys in the multi-sport SSG programme improved in the application of their defensive tactics only. The girls who participated in the soccer SSG programme also improved in their defensive tactics while the girls who participated in the multi-sport SSG programme achieved improvements in their application of both offensive and defensive tactics. The results of this study support proponents of the Developmental Model of Sport Participation as presented in current sport pedagogy literature, who claim that the physical and tactical benefits pre-pubescent children derive from participation in a diversified games programme will be similar to those benefits derived from participation in a specialized sport-specific game programme, providing the sports involved are late specialization sports. These results support the conclusion that it is not necessary for pre-pubescent children to specialize in a late specialization sport such as soccer in order to progress in their ability to play soccer. They can make similar progress if they participate in a diversified games programme that provides them with a broader experience with sports that have similar physical and tactical requirements.

Madruga, Parera Marc. "Inter-limb asymmetries and sports performance: from assessment to the application of a sport-specific iso-inertial resistance training in young athletes." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Girona, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/671226.

Full text
Abstract:
The asymmetries detected in the different multi-directional sports vary in magnitude depending on the test selected. Furthermore, in the individual analysis of the different tests administered, it was observed that athlete’s lower limb preferences depended on the test. Greater asymmetries were detected in the vertical jump test, the CODD variable, and the change of direction with inertial resistance test in multidirectional sports. The change of direction with inertial resistance test also enabled us to detect asymmetries in actions that approximate the actual sport. Moreover, the results showed that asymmetries have a negative impact on performance of the jump and the change of direction, and on speed in the linear sprint and the capacity to repeat the change of direction. Last, we were able to observe that iso-inertial training results in greater adaptations in performance and larger reductions in asymmetries than conventional cable-resistance training. We can also affirm that positive adaptations in performance caused by resistance training are not necessarily associated with reduced asymmetries

Abstract:
The phenomena of "sportivization" of contemporary societies and the development of information and communication technologies have enabled sports brands to rise rapidly and profitably on a global scale. Similarly, the over-mediatization of sport and sports celebrities only increases this trend. More and more people tend to consume emotionally, which underlies individual and collective behaviours. The objective of this thesis is to understand better the behaviours and attitudes of sports consumers (Djiboutians and French) of sports brands. To do this, it uses "social representations" (Moscovici, 1961) as an analytical "grid" that will make it possible to highlight, on the one hand, the shared cognitions of consumers and, on the other hand, the marketing strategies put in place by companies. This work will make it possible to compare the sports relations of the two groups of different subjects from a socio-cultural point of view, in this case French and Djibouti sportsmen and women. Two exploratory studies, one qualitative (semi-directive interview) and the other quantitative (free association of words), made it possible to collect the first data sets from Djiboutians and French athletes (footballers and athletes). The first exploratory study revealed the categories of discourse. The second study defined the scope and structure of social representations. Finally, a confirmatory study, using a structural equation model, made it possible to test all the hypotheses according to brands, sports practised and the national affiliation of groups. In the end, the results did not reveal any significant differences between Adidas and Nike. Similarly, a dichotomy has not been established between the social representations of athletes and the social representations of footballers. On the other hand, there are contrasts between athletes' representations according to their national affiliation

Suchomel, Timothy J., Paul Comfort, and Michael H. Stone. "Weightlifting Pulling Derivatives: Rationale for Implementation and Application." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2015. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/4629.

Full text
Abstract:
This review article examines previous weightlifting literature and provides a rationale for the use of weightlifting pulling derivatives that eliminate the catch phase for athletes who are not competitive weightlifters. Practitioners should emphasize the completion of the triple extension movement during the second pull phase that is characteristic of weightlifting movements as this is likely to have the greatest transference to athletic performance that is dependent on hip, knee, and ankle extension. The clean pull, snatch pull, hang high pull, jump shrug, and mid-thigh pull are weightlifting pulling derivatives that can be used in the teaching progression of the full weightlifting movements and are thus less complex with regard to exercise technique. Previous literature suggests that the clean pull, snatch pull, hang high pull, jump shrug, and mid-thigh pull may provide a training stimulus that is as good as, if not better than, weightlifting movements that include the catch phase. Weightlifting pulling derivatives can be implemented throughout the training year, but an emphasis and de-emphasis should be used in order to meet the goals of particular training phases. When implementing weightlifting pulling derivatives, athletes must make a maximum effort, understand that pulling derivatives can be used for both technique work and building strength–power characteristics, and be coached with proper exercise technique. Future research should consider examining the effect of various loads on kinetic and kinematic characteristics of weightlifting pulling derivatives, training with full weightlifting movements as compared to training with weightlifting pulling derivatives, and how kinetic and kinematic variables vary between derivatives of the snatch.

Abstract:
The e-learning documents design and use are the subject of some many research regarding e-learning into Information Science and Communication (SIC) discipline. Almost nearly all of this work is interested on the documents structure, standardization, mutualization, customizing ... In contrast, few or very few are those who ask the question about the end user needs and expectations. We ask if thinking in this direction should be continued, because it seems us that such modeling content undoubtedly facilitate their understanding and reuse. Based on the previous work, and to make a new contribution to the teaching engineering field, we stand at the border formed by the cognitive and educational use with the sequences teaching design, mediation and the empathetic relationship need with the learner and the teacher, which makes the originality of this research. This problem led us to hypothesize that from an analysis of the learner needs and expectations, we can identify factors which can contribute to the e -learning document development answering to his satisfaction. To achieve our goal, a protocol for data collecting has been set up for the purpose is to identify criteria quality e-learning document according to the “Learner”, the “Designer” and the “Maker” views. We rely on the interviews results with the CNS My Rachid-IRFC teachers and makers. Thus, we discuss the methodology adopted by applying the EBAHIE method. In the experiment, the protocol - called A.Co.D - reveals a robust method to cross several information sources creating synergies several approaches and tools to achieve the comprehensive results on the asked problem: 1- In a first time, the “Learner” approach allows us to understand their perception to propose recommendations to designers. document. 2- In a second time, a “Designer” approach is subject to exchange experiences designers how learners perceived and used the document . 3- The third approach involves crossing the established criteria in the “Learner” process with those released during the “Designer” process. 4- In a fourth time, the “Maker” approach allows finally identifying needs help in decision making. Thus, we arrive at the formalization of our e-learning document design model in Sport field, by providing designers all parameters to develop a quality document

Abstract:
This dissertation compile three studies aiming at illustrate both aspects of sports economics through the relation between performance and salary. The first aspect considers sport as an object of study (Chap. 3). The second one is about the utilization of sport as a laboratory where economical theories can be tested (Chap. 1 et 2). Chapter 1 study the relation between the intra-organization wage concentration and its performance. We propose to model a tournament where a team probability of victory is function (among others) of the wage concentration. The relation can be positive or negative depending of a parameter value. We then estimate this parameter value for a sample of American baseball matches. Our results show that wage concentration decreases the performance. Chapter 2 question the linearity of the wage concentration / performance relation. We replicate the parametric specifications usually employed with some modifications regarding to the estimations framework scale (same sample as in Chap. 1). Then, we compare these results with some semi-parametrical estimations which allow the relation to be established freely. We are thus able to demonstrate the relation non linearity. Chapter 3 evaluates the French first division football clubs efficiency between 2005 and 2009, with a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). In addition, we compute Malmquist indexes from clubs performances of each season in order to know the efficiency evolution. French clubs are globally efficient but the average performance has been decreasing over the studied period

Abstract:
This programme of research was concerned with an examination of the exercise behaviour change of a sample of Malay students living in five different cities in Northern England (Bradford, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sheffield). The research methods used were a cross-sectional study (Study 1), an in-depth interview (Study 2) and a longitudinal study, divided into two parts - quantitative (Study 3A) and qualitative (Study 3B). These three studies were conducted in order to answer four main Research Questions: I. To what extent is Prochaska and DiClemente's (1983)Transtheoretical Model usefuli n examiningt he exerciseb ehaviouro f the students? A cross-sectional study (Study 1) was employed to answer the first research question. The respondents (N = 123) were drawn from two annual meetings of the Malaysian Students Societies at Leeds Metropolitan University and Leeds University. The results showed that there was a relationship between the stages of change and the processes of change, self-efficacy and decisional balance. On the basis of the findings of this initial study (Study 1), two new contributions to the field of exercise behaviour were made: a culture-specific exercise intervention programme was devised, and evidence was provided that the Transtheoretical Model is a wholly suitable vehicle for explaining the exercise behaviour of the students. 2. What factors influenced the exercise behaviour of the students? To answer the second research question, Study 2 (an in-depth interview) was employed, using 20 of the students from Study 1. Study 2 identified the factors that inhibit and those that enhance exercise participation. The nine inhibiting factors were: time constraints, attitude-related factors, lack of guidance, lack of exercise partner, lack of interest, poor weather, lack of child-care facilities, unhealthy physical condition and lack of experience. The five enhancing factors were: health and fitness, sociological factors, psychological benefits, good facilities and a history of exercise. The study also enabled the researcher to make three more contributions in the area of exercise behaviour. These were: the discovery of the "Proselytizing" stage, the fact that the Processes of Change Instrument fails to take into account "involuntary" factors and a proposal for revising the Stages of Change Instrument. 3. Is there any identifiable pattern of change in their exercise behaviour, over a period of time? Study 3A, which employeda longitudinals tudy,o ver an eight-monthp eriodw as able to provide an answer to the third research question. The respondents (N=110), Malay students newly-arrived in England, were contacted through the Malaysian Students' Societies in five different cities in Northern England (Bradford. Leeds. Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sheffield). There were three data collection during the eight-month period of investigation (baseline, follow-up and third data collections). The results revealed that the processes of change scores increased in the Adopters groups, decreased in the Relapsers group, and remained substantially the same in the Stable Inactive and Stable Active groups. Study 3A highlighted the limitations of the Processes of Change Instruments used in earlier studies and revealed that the Marcus et al., (1996c) method of identifying Adopters and Relapsers was inadequate. It also suggested that "Stable Preparers" group should be identified as an additional group, apart from Stable Active and Stable Inactives groups. 4. What are the factors that caused the newly-arrived Malay students to relapse from exercise the over four-month period? Thirty students who were found to have relapsed, in the follow-up data collection (Study 3A) were invited to participate in this study. Of the thirty students, nineteen agreed to participate in the qualitative, longitudinal study. Study 3B revealed that weather conditions, lack of time and lack of exercise partner were among the most prominent reasons why recently-arrived students relapsed from exercising. Furthermore, the study also demonstrated that cultural and religious differences contributed to their relapse from exercise. Recommendations for future research, in this area also, are advanced.

Purbrick, Giles. "The effectiveness of sponsorship in relation to customer-based brand equity : an action sport event application." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25668.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Customer-based brand equity (CBBE) is the differential effect that brand knowledge has on consumers’ response to that brand’s marketing. This research seeks to apply CBBE to action sports sponsorship in a South African context. CBBE was used to investigate the following; • The impact of sponsorship intervention on CBBE
• How multiple CBBE objectives can be achieved through sponsorship
• The differential effect of sponsorship leveraging activities on CBBE
• The influence of interest and involvement in an event on CBBE
Results: A quasi experiment, using interrupted time series analysis, found that only brand awareness was raised owing to sponsorship intervention. Sponsors were not very successful at achieving multiple objectives, while some did manage to achieve their primary objective. It was found that the impact of leveraging activities, according to type of brand, had a differential impact on CBBE. Very little association was found between the level of interest and involvement and CBBE. Conclusion: A framework for sponsors to manage CBBE objectives, sponsorship activities and evaluation was presented. New marketing and leveraging techniques are continuously needed to maintain and raise CBBE perceptions. These techniques should leverage interest and involvement in the event to create goodwill and brand loyalty. Copyright

Abstract:
Algometers are devices that can be used to identify the pressure and/or force eliciting a pressure-pain threshold. It has been noted in pressure-pain threshold studies that the rate at which manual force is applied should be consistent to provide the greatest reliability. This study tested the reliability and construct validity of an algometer (1000-Hz sampling rate) by manually applying pressure on a force plate (500-Hz sampling rate): 10 sets of 5 applications to 80 N and 1 set of 5 applications to each force level: 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, and 110 N. The investigator had previously become familiar with and practiced with the algometer. The handheld algometer had a 1-cm2 round rubber application surface, and the maximum force reading was compared with maximum force readings by the force plate using SEM and t-tests. Force-time curves were analyzed for average slope representing rate of force application. Average Pearson (r) correlations between the maximum force reading of the algometer and force plate were excellent in both trials to 80 N (r = 0.990) and the incremental trials (r = 0.999). The application of force was reasonably constant, with slopes averaging 6.8 ± 0.932 N·s−1. The SEE was 0.323 N. In conclusion, with previous familiarization and practice, an investigator may have high reliability in the rate of force application. The device itself was also highly correlated with readings from a force plate and, therefore, may be considered valid.

Abstract:
The City of Stockholm’s budget for sports is 1.6% of the total city budget in 2014. About 60,000, licensed (age 15 and up, about 50%) and younger actively played soccer in Stockholm in 2005. That is roughly 24% of the total number of participants in sports activities in Stockholm’s district. There is a need for a location-based application (commonly abbreviated "app") to help people spontaneously meet for different sports activities. The app developed and analyzed in this thesis will address this need and assist potential participants in organizing sports activities, deciding to participate in these activities, make friends, etc. Not only large team sports will be considered, but sports done in pairs such as tennis and other sports as well that you do with others. Consider a person who has moved to a new city and wants to play football (soccer), but does not know people in this city. This app can help this person find others who would like to play in a quick and easy way by looking at a map and seeing where others would like to participate in this sport, for example at a particular soccer field, using location information concerning the potential participants and this specific field. Apps that use location information have become very common with the widespread use of smartphones. Such an app provides a location-based service. This thesis describes the design and implementation of an Android app with a location-based service and how to set up this app, what technology is needed to get the needed location information, and the programming language used. In addition, the thesis considers users’ needs and how the app caters to those needs. An analysis will be done of how well this app communicates with a database server as the number of users increases, scales. Performance and load on both the server and app will be considered. The performance will be analyzed to see how well it matches the users’ expectations. The app developed in this thesis will be for the Android platform and Apple's iOS (but the focus in the thesis is on the Android-version). This app will communicate with a database server running a Linux OS, an Apache HTTP server, a MySQL database, and using a PHP programming web infrastructure (such a setup of services is commonly called by the acronym LAMP). The app will connect to Facebook and Twitter to exchange information (however, that is outside the scope of this thesis).

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
With the growth of smart devices market to provide athletes and trainers a systematic, objective and reliable follow-up, more and more parameters are monitored for a same individual. An alternative to laboratory evaluation methods is the use of inertial sensors which allow following the performance without hindering it, without space limits and without tedious initialization procedures. Data collected by those sensors can be classified as multivariate functional data: some quantitative entities evolving along time and collected simultaneously for a same individual. The aim of this thesis is to find parameters for analysing the athlete horse locomotion thanks to a sensor put in the saddle. This connected device (inertial sensor, IMU) for equestrian sports allows the collection of acceleration and angular velocity along time in the three space directions and with a sampling frequency of 100 Hz. The database used for model development is made of 3221 canter strides from 58 ridden jumping horses of different age and level of competition. Two different protocols are used to collect data: one for straight path and one for curved path. We restricted our work to the prediction of three parameters: the speed per stride, the stride length and the jump quality. To meet the first to objectives, we developed a multivariate functional clustering method that allow the division of the database into smaller more homogeneous sub-groups from the collected signals point of view. This method allows the characterization of each group by it average profile, which ease the data understanding and interpretation. But surprisingly, this clustering model did not improve the results of speed prediction, Support Vector Machine (SVM) is the model with the lowest percentage of error above 0.6 m/s. The same applied for the stride length where an accuracy of 20 cm is reached thanks to SVM model. Those results can be explained by the fact that our database is build from 58 horses only, which is a quite low number of individuals for a clustering method. Then we extend this method to the co-clustering of multivariate functional data in order to ease the datamining of horses’ follow-up databases. This method might allow the detection and prevention of locomotor disturbances, main source of interruption of jumping horses. Lastly, we looked for correlation between jumping quality and signals collected by the IMU. First results show that signals collected by the saddle alone are not sufficient to differentiate finely the jumping quality. Additional information will be needed, for example using complementary sensors or by expanding the database to have a more diverse range of horses and jump profiles

Abstract:
Purpose This paper is an account of collaborative action-based research that centered on a new NCAA Division I football program at a regional southeastern university, and the positive impacts the collaboration had on the multiple stakeholders involved in the research, which were the university’s sport management faculty, the athletic department, and sport management students. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach During the action research, these stakeholders moved through a cyclical process that involved reflection, planning, action, and evaluation. Through the action-based cyclical process that was utilized, each of these stakeholders were able to learn, adapt, participate, and make positive change. Findings Positive change occurred with the athletic department’s marketing efforts and game day operations, opportunities for sport management students to participate and learn, and development of relationships between two departments. Research limitations/implications The cyclical nature of this research model often leads to original hypotheses and research foci to be highly altered during various stages. Another limitation within collaborative action research can be the breakdown in communication among the many parties involved in carrying out this type of research. Practical implications While the significance of this study was initially to capture fan information surrounding a new NCAA Division I football program, the stakeholders quickly realized that the action-based research study had more to offer than producing marketing reports for the university athletic department. Inclusion of the students as equal stakeholders in this project proved vital to student learning and involvement. Having the students play such an important role throughout each cycle of the project allowed for additional networking outside the classrooms with potential employers, as well as in-depth discussions and involvement in the classroom when synthesizing and disseminating the marketing information that had been gathered. Originality/value The collaboration between two separate departments within a higher education institution was vital to the overall success of the research project. The overall intent of this paper is to provide a practical approach to collaboration among individuals working in different departments of an organization, as the findings from this research project revealed the overall success of the project was only possible through the collaborative effort and joining resources, abilities, areas of expertise, and capabilities.

Abstract: Sports is present in several educational settings, and the focus of this study is the scenario of non-formal education, more specifically the social and educational projects within the context of Public Policy, which among its objectives seek to minimize the problems faced by children and adolescents in social risk situations. Hence sports must receive an appropriate pedagogical treatment with a systematic organization of its contents, in order to enhance their educational significance. Thus, the study relies on a research that aims to sustain a didactic and pedagogic practice focused on comprehensive training of children and adolescents in sports initiation who are participating in social projects. Therefore, we have carried out a case study at Sport and Youth Education Program (PEEJ), which is a Public Policy maintained by the municipal government of the city of Taubaté, with the purpose of verifying the treatment given to sports as an educational content, checking (I) pedagogical practice of teachers, (II) the contents proposed in planning and (III) which of the contents were indeed learned from the students' perspective. So, the methodological process has gone through four steps: (a) Documental analysis of sports Planning, (b) Nonparticipating note of sports class of 10 teachers, (c) semi-structured interviews with teachers, and (d) semi-structured interviews with 45 students between 11 and 15 years old, through the Focus Group Technique. After analyzing and relating data, we have found that (a) PEEJ presents a Sports Planning from the perspective of Sports Pedagogy Reference, thus contributing to the construction of Teachers' Didactic Proposals, (b) the observed classes show a balance between the three Sports Pedagogy Reference, (c) although the majority of teachers has presented at the interview a vision that surpasses reductionist thoughts about the role of sports, some had difficulties in relating them to the content they teach in class, and (d) students identify the learning acquired on the perspective of Sport Pedagogy Reference

Abstract:

Abstract:
Additive manufacturing enables the production of complex parts such as lattice structures. Their potential, in terms of lightness, improved impact performances, customization and design, draws the attention of the sports equipment manufacturer DECATHLON, who is considering these meso-structures for helmets and shoes applications. This study focuses on the behaviour of several lattices subjected to compressive loading.A preliminary experimental phase identified the behaviour of two materials (PA12 and TPU) produced by a laser sintering process (SLS). The technical feasibility of lattices structures in sports products was then evaluated using static compressions and dynamic impacts adapted to helmet and footwear standards. The second stage of the study consists in developing numerical tools for the design of lattices structures. Several lattices were produced. There mechanical behaviour was characterized in several aspects: the static response under compressive loadings was compared to foams conventionally used for energy absorption; the dimensional stability of the structures and the quantification of the kinematic fields under stress were assessed by micro-tomography.Thanks to these observations, the relevance of a numerical lattice model realized under a finite element code was evaluated. Its lack of representativeness of the junction zones of the beams (the vertices) limits its use. Nevertheless, a local stiffening at the vertices, studied by a numerical design of experiment, greatly improved the modeling

Debraux, Pierre. Reims, 2010. http://theses.univ-reims.fr/sciences/2010REIMS013.pdf.

Abstract:
The BMX competitions take place on a specific track of 300-400 m with bumps and turns, and with a downhill start. The displacement velocity reached by the riders may be greater than 70 kmh-1 a few seconds after the start. Few scientific studies focused to the parameters related to the performance in BMX. Nevertheless, a study showed that the starting phase was capital and that the maximum muscle power was a major contributor to performance during this phase. The aim of this thesis is to study the determinants of performance in this sport in focusing on two main parameters: the muscular power output of the lower limbs and a variable of aerodynamics, the projected frontal area. Firstly, the study of the muscular power output in lower body during sprints on a cycle ergometer and a ½ Squat among road cyclists and BMX riders showed that the muscle cross-sectional area and maximal muscle strength were indicators of performance for all-out sprints (~ 6-30s). A comparison of muscular inertial profiles has shown that BMX riders produced a maximal power output with relative light loads and it was necessary to increase muscular power output at heavy loads. Secondly, a new field method for measuring the projetcted frontal area in cycling has been tested. This method is reproducible and valid in comparison to the methods of weighing photographs and digitization. This method was used to measure the projected frontal area of BMX riders during 80 m sprints. These sprints allowed to highlight the importance of the maximal power, the projected frontal area and the average pedaling rate on the chronometric performance and the need to find an optimal gear to decrease the difference between the average pedaling rate and the optimal pedaling rate. To optimize the performance in competition among the BMX riders, it seems necessary: i) to follow a resistance training to increase muscle mass and muscle maximal strength of the lower limbs; ii) to adjust the gear ratio depending on the riders; and iii) to optimize the projected frontal area for some phases of the race. Solutions are proposed in this thesis

Abstract:
The aim of our research is to propose a method to characterize the perception of a so-called sport-health hybrid product.Indeed, the user experience associated with a product has become, nowadays, a major differentiator among the competition and can greatly influence the success of a product. Users / consumers are no longer just looking for a functional product, but also a product that is easy to use and that gives them satisfaction throughout its use. This last aspect, user satisfaction, has become an important industrial issue. The aim is to provide the best possible user experience and thereby improve the chances of the product being successful. It depends in particular on how the product is perceived. However, in some cases, designing the way a product is viewed can be complex. This is particularly the case with hybrid products that combine characteristics from different product areas. The company SC-Ergomedical experienced this difficulty by noting that the hybrid sports-health products developed were not fully understood. Indeed, they were perceived either as sports products or as health products, but never together. It is clear that this makes them less accepted by users / consumers. This perception gap results both from the dialogical nature of the product universes of sport and health and that the perception of such products depends on their contexts of contrary uses but also on a missing semantics reflecting the identity of the sport-health hybrid product. In order to reduce this perception gap and improve the understanding of hybrid sport-health products, we propose in this thesis a methodology based on the Affective Engineering approach. The results observed then make it possible to build a design space to characterize the perception of a sport-health product. Indeed, the first two experiments carried out made it possible to define a sport-health semantics as well as the influence of contexts of contrary use which conditions the perception of these products. The third allowed us to characterize the attribute space of sport-health products and link it to the predefined semantic space. All three experiments led us to the creation of the design space characterizing the perception of a sport-health product. This design space provides a guide for designers to develop hybrid sport-health products and reduce the perceived gap. Indeed, via this space, it is then possible to recommend attributes produced from a sport-health semantics in a context of use of sport and / or health, to evaluate the sport-health values of a solution or a final product or to explore combinations of sport-health product attributes and visualize the resulting values. These different possibilities can be used in a design assistance tool for hybrid products like the one we propose in this manuscript specific to the design of hybrid sport-health products
