Abstract:
The principles and techniques of spontaneous prose in the stories of the modern English writer J. McGregor are considered. The novelty of the research is determined by the insufficient study of the specifics of spontaneous prose in modern literature in general and the principles of spontaneity in the stories of J. McGregor, in particular. The relevance of the research is due to the fact that the new narrative forms that take place in the works of modern literature require close study, the development of special decoding methods. It is shown that spontaneous prose provides the writer with an opportunity for various kinds of experiments that relate to both the form of the narrative and the content of the work. It is concluded that the main tendencies of spontaneity, which are realized in the stories of J. McGregor, are the following elements: polyphony, the presence of a second implicit narrative plan, imitation of the stream of consciousness in the external and internal speech of characters, creation of sketch images of heroes, description of events in the form of sketches, a narrative collage technique reminiscent of a series of snapshots or still frames. It is proved that all of the above techniques provoke many implications, give rise to various associations and are aimed at involving the reader in the process of interpreting the work, his active co-creation.

Abstract:
This prose is a love letter to Iceland: female body, metaphysical land, and lover. It is both a comparison and a reflection: a comparison between the Norths I experienced, the subarctic North of Iceland and the Mediterranean North of the Alps; and a reflection about two different worlds, old and new, human and more-than-human. Conceived initially as an article, this piece of writing has rapidly assumed a more spontaneous, prismatic and almost anarchist identity, landing to a stylistic method very close to narrative scholarship.

Abstract:
The author of the paper explores two dichotomous phenomena — boredom and entertainment — in Polish prose for children from the period of PRL, basing on the adventure novels written by Edmund Niziurski in the 1960s: Awanturza w Niekłaju (1962) and Siódme wtajemniczenie (1969). Both notions are discussed from the perspective of ethnography, anthropology, and the history of childhood. Referring to Roger Caillois’s concepts of play and games, the researcher analyses the images of transformation of entertainment behaviours as presented by young characters from Niziurski’s novels, and links between the text and social and political reality in Poland of the 1960s. Her findings indicate that, in his writing of this period, Niziurski both withdrew from socrealistic poetics and abandoned the ideological, persuasive function of entertainment for the sake of uninhibited, spontaneous children’s games and play.

Abstract:
Primary interjections consist of a group of prototypical units, which are associated with reflex cries by their origin, have an oral form called a vocal gesture, and written, conventional ones, with national characteristics. Analysis of similar features in pronunciation, spelling and semantics of prototypical units and linguistic differences of other units reveals universal characteristics of a limited number of prototypical interjections and linguistic specifity of the majority of primary interjections. Examples drawn from English, Russian and Kazakh languages demonstrate the ability of primary interjections to express the ambivalence of feelings and emotions. The article focuses on distinguishing instinctive and discursive categories of primary interjections concentrating on the mode of their production and purpose of use. The first category includes addressless exclamations that express a reaction to what is happening, as well as relevant feelings and emotions. The second group includes units that are explicitly or implicitly intended for the addressee of speech, which are used for communicative purposes. In contrast to instinctive interjections expressing spontaneous feelings and reactions, discursive units may reflect unreal emotions that the interlocutor expects to be demonstrated. In a pragmatic aspect, the use of primary interjections is considered to convey an ironic attitude to the subject of speech. The article provides an overview of language units that formally resemble primary interjections and make their identification difficult.

Abstract:
Italo-Brazilian prose texts from São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul, written from the 1920s until today, either in Brazilian Portuguese with Italian code-switches, or in the Venetian koiné spoken by the Italian immigrants in Rio Grande do Sul, sometimes switching to Portuguese, are an early, but so far largely neglected example of literary code-switching representing the multilingual immigrants’ communities. In a sociolinguistic analysis of these texts I will argue that the conversational functions of literary code-switching, especially in reported speech, are comparable to those found in spontaneous utterances, if considered in a continuum between conceptually oral and conceptually written language ( Koch and Oesterreicher, 1985 ). On the micro-level the stylistic function of code-switching plays a more prominent role in literature than in other genres, but on the macro level this kind of code-switching can also be regarded as a response to bilingual identity. In this respect, literary code-switching is used as an approximation strategy between the two closely related contact languages that gives the minority language prestige and thus contributes to its preservation.

Abstract:
This study investigated the rate at which 60 elementary school children produced three advanced verb forms—past progressive, past perfect progressive, and past perfect—when asked to retell literate narratives, a discourse genre that originates from written prose and frequently contains these advanced verb forms. The three verb forms were embedded in nine story episodes and told to the children. The children were then asked to retell the stories. Verb form production by the children was scored as either “borrowed” or substituted spontaneous production. During their story-retelling episodes, the 6-, 7-, and 8-year-old children borrowed all verb forms under investigation from the stimuli stories. They significantly preferred to borrow the past progressive over the past perfect progressive and past perfect forms. Rate of verb form production by 8-year-old children was significantly higher than for the younger age groups. These data suggest that advanced verb form production is influenced by the children’s sensitivity to the type of narrative register (i.e., 1 st or 3rd person perspective), the propositional ability associated with narrative development, and the progressive meaning of the -ing suffix.

Abstract:
The status of the language of folklore is a theoretical problem of Folklore Studies that has a long history, but it has become even more relevant recently due to the expansion of the Folklore Studies research field. Traditionally, characteristic features of the language of folklore were defined in relation to dialect and literary language, and the researchers supposed that the language of folklore is supradialectical phenomenon, like the literary language of dialect speakers. However, observations of linguistic organization of oral prose with a focus on reliability (mythological stories, etc.) show that these theoretical approaches are not applicable to such texts. The language of these texts is the colloquial (dialect, vernacular, or literary) speech existing in a dialogic mode and possessing all the structural features of spontaneous colloquial speech. The article suggests to distinguish between “the language of folklore” and “the language of folk tradition”, that is, the language of the genres of traditional folklore (songs, epics, fairy tales, etc.) – structurally ordered, “polished” by numeroius repetitions in the process of transmission, with a clearly expressed aesthetic function, and the language of everyday communication in which texts expressing traditional knowledge emerge and exist.

Tonski, Jean. "The importance of activating student prior knowledge : elementary teachers' spontaneous and cued identifications of key concepts in narrative prose." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28304.

Full text
Abstract:
Elementary teachers' spontaneous (unaided) and cued identifications of key concepts in narrative prose were examined. Measures of the influences of exposure to research and attitudes toward the importance of prior knowledge on their cued identifications were investigated. Data were analyzed to determine the degree to which elementary teachers identified cued key concepts and primary teachers' identifications were compared to those of intermediate teachers. Separate and combined measures of teachers' exposure to reading research and attitudes were compared to their cued key concept identifications. A post hoc exploratory content analysis of the spontaneous key concept identifications was undertaken to discover possible patterns or phenomena in the data. Results of the analyses of cued concept identifications indicated: a) teachers were unable to successfully identify key concepts in narrative prose; b) there were no significant differences between primary and intermediate teachers' identifications; and c) exposure to reading research and attitudes towards the importance and use of prior knowledge and concept development influenced teachers' ability to identify key concepts. An examination of spontaneous key concept identifications showed that: a) there was a lack of teacher consensus as to definition of a key concept; and b) teachers were unable to identify passage-relevant key concepts when left to their own resources.

""the lonely and the road” (novel) “What’s your road, man?”: my experiences with the life and work of Jack Kerouac in relation to the development of “the lonely and the road” (exegesis)." Abstract:
Thirty thousand feet above the Pacific Ocean—somewhere between Sydney and Los Angeles—the narrator of “the lonely and the road” doesn’t really know where he is going, or why. His is a quest written spontaneously—‘on-the-go.’ It is a journey of uncertain motivation, of uncertain means, towards uncertain ends. From Los Angeles, to Vegas, to the Rocky Mountain states and beyond, the narrator travels with and learns from his friends, his family and even his ex-girlfriend as he searches for that which continues to elude him. But what is that exactly? Does it even exist? While the novel details a journey, the exegesis is a phenomenological account of the intersecting of my road with that taken by Jack Kerouac. It explores my experiences with the life and work of Kerouac—the creator of spontaneous prose—in relation to the development of my writing, up to and including this novel. In doing so, the exegesis is itself a quest that seeks to understand more fully the essence of Kerouac’s and my own representation of the quest motif in content and in form. Both the exegesis and the novel, then, constitute part of the search for my own artistic road, and aim to assist others in search of theirs.

Abstract:
With the publication of On the Road in 1957, Jack Kerouac became a cultural phenomenon. Crowned the "King" of the Beat Generation, Kerouac embodied the restlessness of Cold War-era America. What no one realized at the time, however, was that the movement that he supposedly led went against Kerouac's own beliefs. Rather than rebellion, Kerouac wanted to write in a way that no one had written before. Heavily influenced by, among others, Mark Twain, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Marcel Proust, Herman Melville, and, especially, James Joyce, Kerouac used the influence of his predecessors to formulate his own style of writing-spontaneous prose. The critics who label Kerouac as a cultural icon akin to James Dean fail to see Kerouac as a serious author. The removal of the cultural fanfare surrounding Kerouac shows the truth about his writing, his influences, and his influence on late-twentieth century literature, including the entire postmodern movement.

Abstract:
The MN is a movement disorder characterized by spontaneous underutilized contralesional limb in the absence of a primary deficit that improves with the verbal command. For its characteristics it is difficult to evoke in the clinical set-ting and its recognition is based on observation of symptoms. The lesions associated with NM are different and its mechanisms are unknown. The selective impairment of spontaneous movement suggests the involvement of the medi-al motor system. Research has the aim of studying the MN with a new quantitative method, based on the actigraphy, and to explore the neuroanatomical bases. Two accelerometers were placed on both wrists for 24 hours. Sog-31 jets and 38 brain-healthy, with 6 MN were recruited. In two cases we analysis lesions. It has been validated new asymmetry index AR24h. The MN showed an asymmetric behavior, similar to and different from the healthy and hemiplegic pa-tients not hemiplegic. Patients showed a lesion of the cingulate and putamen, parts of the medial motor system im-portant for voluntary actions. The differential actigraphy quantifies the spontaneous movement and evaluates the NM. Putamen and the track cause dysfunction of the motor system and causes medial NM.

Abstract:
The stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHRSP) is an inbred model of hypertension. Renal microarrays and functional genomic strategies investigated chromosome 2 candidate hypertension genes, focussing on the oxidative-stress defence gene, glutathione s-transferse mu type 1 (Gstm1). Ingenuity pathway analysis of renal microarrays in 5 and 16-week SHRSP, normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and chromosome 2 congenic rats identified differential expression of several glutathione cycling genes. The Gstm1 promoter was investigated by luciferase and Transfac bioinformatic analysis, implicating two polymorphism clusters and several transcription factors in reduced SHRSP Gstm1 expression. Recombinant adenoviruses expressing Gstm1 and short-hairpin RNA-interference sequences to reduce Gstm family expression were produced. In-vivo overexpression of Gstm1 did not improve endothelial nitric-oxide bioavailability in SHRSP carotid arteries. Bacterial artificial chromosome and linear expression constructs were purified for production of Gstm1 transgenic rats, putative transgenic rats were screened by PCR. The strategies developed in this project are an example of thorough functional genomic analysis in experimental hypertension research.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how much the graduate students’ decisions about approaching confidants were deliberative as opposed to spontaneous—whether they assessed pros and cons before deciding whom to ask or instead spontaneously spilled their emotions on the spot. It first considers the standard assumption in theories of purposive action across the social sciences that deliberation precedes action. It then discusses three decisions that a person inherently makes when he or she mobilizes his or her network: to seek help, to select a confidant, and to activate the tie. The chapter suggests that the extent to which their activation decisions were incidental or spontaneous, rather than reflective, depended in part on the context of students’ interactions with others. It argues that students often found themselves confiding in someone not because they had planned it, but simply because the confidant was present and available when needed.

Abstract:
This chapter explores points of contact between philosophy of mind and scientific approaches to spontaneous thought. While offering a series of conceptual instruments that might prove helpful for researchers on the empirical research frontier, it begins by asking what the explanandum for theories of mind-wandering is, how one can conceptually individuate single occurrences of this specific target phenomenon, and how one might arrive at a more fine-grained taxonomy. The second half of this contribution sketches some positive proposals as to how one might understand mind-wandering on a conceptual level, namely, as a loss of mental autonomy resulting in involuntary mental behavior, as a highly specific epistemic deficit relating to self-knowledge, and as a discontinuous phenomenological process in which one’s conscious “unit of identification” is switched.

Abstract:
As ritualistically conveyed in management and organization studies textbooks, the Human Relations ‘school’ of management (HRS) is understood to have emerged from investigations into human association in the workplace by Elton Mayo and his associates between 1924 and 1932 at the Hawthorne plant of Western Electric. The HRS is said to have brought people’s social needs into the limelight and thereby increased their capacity for ‘spontaneous collaboration’ at work. This perspective, however, has been challenged by a growing body of scholars who have demonstrated that HRS provided employers with an authoritarian management model that held employees are irrational, agitation-prone individuals whose demand for better wages and working conditions was symptomatic of a deep psychosocial maladjustment. This perspective enabled employers to monopolise authority in the workplace and justify this monopoly on the grounds that workers lacked the rationality required to participate in management decision-making.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 provides background information pertaining to the regulation of takeover bids, to clarify how political struggles surrounding shareholder rights elucidate the political dynamics of marketization. Four considerations motivated the case selection. First, the so-called market for corporate control cannot arise spontaneously and is prone to market failure, because corporate control is a fictitious good in need of commodification by means of market-enabling rules. Second, the rules governing this market are politically contentious because they have significant distributional implications. Third, struggles surrounding these rules pit different kinds of equally well-endowed profit-oriented opportunists against one another. Fourth, the process started a long time ago and played out differently in different countries, partly due to variation in the political salience of hostile bids.

Abstract:
This book draws from leading neuroscientists and scholars in the humanities and the arts to probe creativity in its many manifestations, including the everyday mind, the exceptional mind, the pathological mind, the scientific mind, and the artistic mind. It offers a brand new interdisciplinary approach revealing secrets of creativity that emerge from our everyday lives and from the minds of exceptional individuals and their discoveries or creations. Neuroscientists, psychologists, and humanities researchers provide new insights about the workings of the creative brain. Components of creativity are specified with respect to types of memory, forms of intelligence, modes of experience, and kinds of emotion. Authors in this volume take on the challenge of simultaneously characterizing creativity at behavioral, cognitive, and neurophysiological levels. It becomes apparent to all our authors that, with creativity, there is an interaction between consciously controlled processing and spontaneous processing. Neuroscientists describe the functioning of the brain and its circuitry in creative acts of scientific discovery or aesthetic production. Humanists from the fields of literature, art, and music give analyses of creativity in major literary works, musical compositions, and works of visual art. This book brings together an interdisciplinary group of contributors for a novel discussion of creativity from the confluence of neuroscience and the arts.

Abstract:
Template measurement is an important method in deep nuclear disarmament. The gamma-ray spectrum of Plutonium pit shows unique property due to age, abundance, amounts and thickness of the Plutonium pit; that is, same designed pits yield similar gamma-ray spectra while different design give distinct spectra. Useful information is extracted from gamma-ray spectrum generated by the reliable Plutonium pit radiation as ‘template’. Comparison of the data from inspected objects with the template can give conclusion whether they are of the same type. This paper studies how to choose template data from gamma-ray spectrum and discusses the limits of the gamma-ray measurement. Because of the strong self-absorption of Plutonium, some characteristics of Plutonium pit can’t be identified only by gamma spectrum. MCNP simulation was employed to prove that in some cases, template depending on gamma-ray spectrum from the reliable Plutonium pit alone can’t effectively distinguish the spurious objects. And a further approach indicates that enhancing neutron counting rate of spontaneous fission of Plutonium can improve the problem. Neutron counting rate can be indirectly acquired by spontaneous fissile neutrons bombarding a 10B target. 478 keV γ rays are concomitant with the nuclear reaction 10B(n,α)7Li* from 7Li* nuclei’s deexcitation. Neutron information is gathered by detecting 478 keV γ photons. Using HPGe γ detector can both detect γ-ray spectrum and acquire neutron counting rate. This method efficiently increases confidence of template measurement and also ensures the dismantling process without revealing sensitive nuclear warhead design information.

Full text
Abstract:
Scanning probe microscopy nanotribological experiments on thick polystyrene films have been performed that support the hypothesis that crazing is the mechanism of ‘bundle’ formation. In these fatigue studies, surface patterning appears abruptly at a critical friction, and can either occur spontaneously or be triggered by surface imperfections. After pattern initiation, progressive scanning smoothly increases surface roughness. Friction histograms of these in situ patterned surfaces reveal two distinct friction regions that are statistically correlated with the topography. Using a topography-friction cross-correlation function, high friction was found to coincide with topographic troughs. This supports crazing as the mechanism of deformation, in which surface fracture at troughs leads to fibril formation, consistent with the observation of higher energy dissipation.

Abstract:
Abstract A coupled thermochemical/electrochemical cycle was investigated to produce hydrogen from renewable resources. Like a conventional thermochemical cycle, this approach leverages chemical energy stored in a thermochemical working material that is reduced thermally by solar energy. However, in this concept, the stored chemical energy provides only a fraction of the energy required for effectively splitting steam to produce hydrogen. To push the reaction towards completion, an electrically-assisted proton-conducting membrane is employed to separate and recover hydrogen as it is produced. This novel coupled-cycle concept provides several benefits. First, the required oxidation enthalpy of the reversible thermochemical material is decreased, enabling the process to occur at lower temperatures. Second, removing the requirement for spontaneous steam splitting widens the scope of materials compositions, allowing for less expensive/more abundant elements to be used. Lastly, thermodynamics calculations suggest that this concept can potentially reach higher efficiencies than photovoltaic-to-electrolysis hydrogen production. A novel thermochemical/electrochemical test stand was conceptualized and constructed to prove the concept, and the practical feasibility of the proposed coupled cycle was assessed by validating the individual components of the system: proton conduction across a BaCe0.1Zr0.8Y0.1O3-δ (BCZY18) membrane, thermochemical activity of the CaAl0.2Mn0.8O3−δ (CAM28) working material reduced at 650 °C, and indirect observation of hydrogen production.

Abstract:
Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis has been used to perform family studies, including prenatal diagnosis, in 21 haemophilia A kindred. Two intragenomic RFLPs were studied in conjunction with one linked RFLP. The intragenomic BgII RFLP,situation 3' to exon 26 was detected with cDNA probe C (Genetics Institute) giving bands of 20kb (17% of X chromosomes) and 5kb (83%), and the intragenomic Bell RFLP, situated 3' to exon 18, was detected with the genomic DNA probe pi 14.12 from Genentech. The frequency of this RFLP in the local population was 23% (1.1 kb allele) and 77% (0.88kb allele). The linked probe DXS15 (DX13) was used to detect a Bglll RFLPwith alleles of 5.8kb (45%) and 2.8kkb (55%). A recombination rate of approximately 5% has been estimated between the factor VIII and DXS15 lociCarrier studies were performed in 15 kindreds. 25 obligate carriers were identified and of these, 20 were potentially informative (heterozygous and phase known) for at least 1 RFLP (9 for Bgll, 9 for Bell and 7 for BgIII). 34 possible carriers were studied, of which 13 were diagnosed as normal (6 by BgII, 6 by Bell and 5 by BgIII). 17 were diagnosed as carriers (2 by Bgll, 12 by Bell and 10 by Bglll) and diagnosis was not possible in a further 4 cases. Of these diagnosed as carriers 3 were non-informative for all RFLPs, and 14informative for at least one RFLP (3 by Bgll, 8 by Bell and 8 with BgIII).Prenatal diagnosis was attempted by analysis of DNA extracted by chorionic villussampling in 6 cases of male fetuses at risk of havinghaemophilia A. 1 fetus was diagnosed as being affected (Bell) and was electively terminated. Three otherfetuses were diagnosed as normal by the BgIII/DXS15 RFLP, but the two intragenomic RFLPs were non-informative. Because of the possibility of a crossover allthree patients opted for mid-trimester fetoscopy andmeasurement of fetal factor VIII at Kings College Hospital, London (Dr Reuben Mibashan), where the diagnoses were confirmed. In the 4th case a normal fetus was diagnosed by the Bgll RFLP analysis, but a spontaneous abortion at 12 weeks prevented confirmation of this result. In the final case of twin male fetuses, none of the RFLPs was informative and both were diagnosed as normal by fetal blood sampling at fetoscopy.

Abstract:
The effect of the combined oral administration of pentoxifylline (pof) and low dose acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) was evaluated with the help of the laser-induced thrombosis model in rat mesenteric arterioles. Laser-induced thrombosis is inhibited in a dose-dependent way by both drugs. The administration of ASA, either simultaneously with or 1 hour prior to pof, does not show any effects in the laser model. On the contrary, the administration of pof followed 1 h later by ASA not onyl exhibited a significant effect but also produced a supraadditive inhibition of the laser-induced thrombus formation. Specific investigations concerning the time interval between the administration of both drugs determined that a significant effect can be achieved only after an interval of 30 to 90 minutes (principle of HWA 5112).The striking results could also be shown in diseased animals after consecutive chronic administration of pof 1 h prior to ASA. HWA 5112 exhibits significant effects on laser-induced thrombus formation in the following chronic animal models: 1. adjuvant arthritic rats, 10 → 1 mg/kg for 21 days; 2. spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rats, 10→ 1 mg/kg three times within 24 h; 3. cholesterol-induced atherosclerosis in rabbits, 10→ 1 mg/kg for 14 days. The reported data clearly demonstrate that the sequential drug administration of first pentoxifylline followed 30 to 90 min later by ASA exhibits a supraadditive antithrombotic effect.
