Abstract:
Abstract This article challenges the traditional view that informal sponsalia (as described in D. 23,1) were legally unenforceable in classical Roman law. After a close examination of the contents and structure of D. 23,1 and related Digest texts, it offers a new interpretation of a crucial passage from Aulus Gellius (Noctes Atticae 4.4), which has traditionally been read as showing that Roman sponsalia were unenforceable. The article then concludes with a consideration of the literary evidence offered by Varro, Plautus and Ovid.

Abstract:
AbstractFollowing a brief introduction, this paper will then focus on Cyprian’s comments regarding the behaviour of Virgins in De Habitu Virginum. Cyprian of Carthage argues with the adulterium, a category of Roman criminal law which was particularly important in contemporary society, in order to justify the requirement for Virgins to adopt a way of life and behaviour that would be described today as ‘well-behaved and discreet’. Although fully aware that married women had a different way of life to sponsae Christi, he was inclined to impose the same rules on allChristian Women.

The new Ordo consecrationis virginum underlines the very ancient and evangelical motif of consecration, which draws us back to baptismal consecration, opening the way to the eschatological feast of the Lamb, which can be anticipated now by total devotion to Christ. The prayer of consecration and partly the homily convey the main theological idea of sponsal and spiritually furtile love, perfectly exemplified in the person of Holy Mary, Mother of God.

Abstract:
So far, in the Romanian specialized literature, we notice few and inconsistent papers on engagement, hence the precariousness of the studies on the legal status of the two forms of engagement, civil and religious. Therefore, in the pages of our paper we have chosen to present this legal institution both in terms of the legislation and the doctrine of (Old and New) Roman Law, and of "Jus civile" (civil law) and "Jus nomocanonicum" (ecclesiastical law), i.e., The (Byzantine) state law, whose Collections of Laws reserved a special place not only to the institution of civil engagement, but also to the religious one. This approach to our first-hand documentary research in both laws (utriusque juris), i.e., civil and religious, has given us the opportunity to give some considerations and make pertinent assessments regarding some Latin and Greek legislative texts, out of the desire to provide readers with a reference study on both forms of engagement, i.e., civil and religious.

Abstract:
Emerald damselfly Lestes sponsa is a common species within the temperate zone, with no special need for protection. The tactic of submerged oviposition is well known from other Odonata species, but has rarely been noticed or described in Lestes sponsa. Our study investigated the tactics of oviposition in this species, and shows that submerged oviposition indeed occurs frequently in Lestes sponsa. We experimentally tested the difference in the roles of males and females during the submerged ovipositional behaviour by combining males/females from submerging populations with males/females from non-submerging populations. We discovered that, whereas submerging males coupling with non-submerging females did not lead to submersion, the opposite combination of pairs submerged. Other patterns of submersions are discussed further in this paper. Our research led to the conclusion that damselflies have the ability to learn and react to different situations in keeping with the learning potential of insects in general.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the image of Mary’s womb as the bridal chamber in which the Word and the flesh, the divine and the human natures of Christ, are united. The image presents the reader with a paradox – the Word and the flesh engage in a divine unification and comingling in the womb of the virgin. The study traces the development of the image in the earlier works of Augustine, and contextualises it within Augustine’s later thought, in which the body and sexuality are considered in a more positive light. The study aims to demonstrate that Augustine’s structuring of incarnational theology served as a framework for his views on sexuality – prelapsarian, postlapsarian, and eschatological sexuality – and the discourse of the incarnation, especially in his later thought, should be seen primarily as a discourse of sexuality.

Full text
Abstract:
In this article, Book XV of 'Contra Faustum' is approached to present the various ecclesiological ideas of Faustus and Saint Augustine, behind which there are two different hypotexts of the Book of Revelation. Faustus starts from the text of Rev 21:9, which presents the Church as sponsa and uxor, that is to say of an ecclesiology that has as point of departure a consummated eschatology which is on the way to perfection. Saint Augustine starts from the text of Rev 21:2 and 22:17, where the Church is presented as sponsa, with an ecclesiology of an eschatology not yet consummated, of the 'schon jetz aber noch nicht', where the Church lives in the hope of becoming the uxor Christi in the kingdom of heaven, when the time of the nuptiae arrives. On the other hand, the fact that Saint Augustine within the Contra Faustum never calls the group of Manicheans with the word ecclesia, but only with terms such as societas or congregatio, is underlined. The article alludes to the Christological insights of Book XV of 'Contra Faustum'. The other allusions to the Church as sponsa and uxor Christi in Book XXII of 'Contra Faustum' are also studied, in order to point out again the augustinian ecclesiological idea of an eschatology not yet consummated, and the fact that the Church is also, according to Saint Augustine, the Sister of Christ.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of hydrophobicity of insect cuticles has received great attention from technical fields due to its wide applicability to industry or medicine. However, in an ecological/evolutionary context such studies remain scarce. We measured spatial differences in wing wettability in Lestes sponsa (Odonata: Lestidae), a damselfly species that can submerge during oviposition, and discussed the possible functional significance. Using dynamic contact angle (CA) measurements together with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we investigated differences in wettability among distal, middle and proximal wing regions, and in surface nanostructures potentially responsible for observed differences. As we moved from distal towards more proximal parts, mean values of advancing and receding CAs gradually increased from 104° to 149°, and from 67° to 123°, respectively, indicating that wing tips were significantly less hydrophobic than more proximal parts. Moreover, values of CA hysteresis for the respective wing parts decreased from 38° to 26°, suggesting greater instability of the structure of the wing tips. Accordingly, compared with more proximal parts, SEM revealed higher damage of the wax nanostructures at the distal region. The observed wettability gradient is well explained by the submergence behaviour of L. sponsa during underwater oviposition. Our study thus proposed the existence of species-dependent hydrophobicity gradient on odonate wings caused by different ovipositional strategies.

Abstract:
Organisms with a complex life cycle are characterized by a life-history shift through metamorphosis and include organisms such as insects and amphibians. They must optimize their use of resources and behaviour across different life stages to maximize their fitness. An interesting question with regard to such life-history shifts is whether growth in the juvenile stage can be compensated for in the adult stage. Here we ask whether emerald damselflies (Lestes sponsa (Hansemann, 1823)) are able to compensate for depressed growth during the juvenile aquatic stage in their terrestrial adult stage. Lestes sponsa emerge at a fixed adult body size, but feed during the adult stage and are thus able to gain mass as adults. We performed a mark–recapture study to answer whether individuals that emerge from metamorphosis with a low mass are able to compensate by subsequent mass gain during the adult stage. Results showed that compensatory mass gain occurred in the adult stage such that small individuals gained more mass than large individuals. We also found that females gained more mass than males. However, individuals that emerged at a low mass still had lower mass as mature adults than individuals that emerged at a high mass, suggesting that compensation was not complete. This suggests that larval ecology and adult fitness are tightly linked and future research should focus more on elucidating the nature of this relationship.

Abstract:
The advent of next-generation sequencing has resulted in transcriptome-based approaches to investigate functionally significant biological components in a variety of non-model organism. This has resulted in the area of “venomics”: a rapidly growing field using combined transcriptomic and proteomic datasets to characterize toxin diversity in a variety of venomous taxa. Ultimately, the transcriptomic portion of these analyses follows very similar pathways after transcriptome assembly often including candidate toxin identification using BLAST, expression level screening, protein sequence alignment, gene tree reconstruction, and characterization of potential toxin function. Here we describe the Python package Venomix, which streamlines these processes using common bioinformatic tools along with ToxProt, a publicly available annotated database comprised of characterized venom proteins. In this study, we use the Venomix pipeline to characterize candidate venom diversity in four phylogenetically distinct organisms, a cone snail (Conidae; Conus sponsalis), a snake (Viperidae; Echis coloratus), an ant (Formicidae; Tetramorium bicarinatum), and a scorpion (Scorpionidae; Urodacus yaschenkoi). Data on these organisms were sampled from public databases, with each original analysis using different approaches for transcriptome assembly, toxin identification, or gene expression quantification. Venomix recovered numerically more candidate toxin transcripts for three of the four transcriptomes than the original analyses and identified new toxin candidates. In summary, we show that the Venomix package is a useful tool to identify and characterize the diversity of toxin-like transcripts derived from transcriptomic datasets. Abstract:
Abstract Barratt, I. M., and Allcock, A. L. 2010. Ageing octopods from stylets: development of a technique for permanent preparations. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 67: 1452–1457. Previous attempts at ageing octopods from stylets have relied on preparations that deteriorate with time. Some techniques require an immediate photographic record, others allow real-time enumeration but do not provide a permanent archive. A technique is described that produces permanent and archivable preparations of octopod stylets. Stylets were dehydrated in ethanol and infiltrated with a low-viscosity resin. Subsequent polymerization of the resin allowed the embedded stylet to be ground and polished to reveal the stylet microstructure. This comprised increments that are probably suitable for age estimation. The technique was developed using stylets of Octopus vulgaris and Eledone cirrhosa. Increments were composed of light and dark bands and were clearly defined at ×400 and at ×625 magnifications. The number of increments ranged from 189 to 399. The stylets of a deep-sea species (Bathypolypus sponsalis) and an Antarctic species (Megaleledone setebos) were also examined. Each appeared to have growth increments, despite the perception that the environments they inhabited may not provide daily cues. Using the technique developed, the pre-hatch nucleus was seldom well defined, as reported for O. pallidus, stylets of which were prepared using a non-permanent method. Reasons for this are discussed. The microstructure clarity revealed is probably associated with the ultra-low viscosity of the resin used.
