Frazier, LaTrina Dion. "How Spiritual Values Correlate With Hospice Use for African Americans." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/279.

Full text
Abstract:
End of life hospice services have consistently been underused by African Americans. This disproportionate use of hospice has contributed to poor quality of life and a lack of cost-effective care for patients with terminal illness. Driven by the theory of reasoned action, the purpose of this quantitative study was to test associations between African Americans' perceptions of hospice, decisions to use hospice, and religiosity. A convenience sample of 154 African American adults was surveyed online. The survey instrument combined the AARP End of Life survey, Perception of Hospice survey, and the Religiousness Measure survey. The results of a multiple linear regression showed a significant relationship between religiosity and perception of hospice where those who reported a higher level of religiosity had a more favorable perception of hospice (B = .174, p = .041), whereas there was no support of a relationship in which religiosity was a predictor of intent to use hospice (B = -.019, p = .816). Findings also showed the more positive the perception of hospice the lower the rate of intent to use hospice (B = -.181, p = .002). This research could benefit health care providers, researchers, and community members by increasing public awareness and education of hospice. Focus on the underuse of hospice by African Americans may promote positive social change through discussion within communities and hospice agencies about the barriers to service; these results may also foster implementation of interventions and initiatives that improve service to underserved populations. Such efforts could improve quality of life for individuals, their families, and communities.

Moir-Bussy, Ann, and n/a. "Spirituality and counselling." University of Canberra. Education, 1993. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20061018.142411.

Abstract:
There has been little Australian research on the religious and spiritual values of counsellors one study only, published by Cross and Khan in 1983. However, this issue is an important one, as counsellors' values may influence their clients and the need of clients may require the attention of the counsellor to religious and spiritual issues. This study consisted of two surveys in which the religious and spiritual beliefs and values of Australian counsellors were examined. The first study addressed some root questions concerning the relevance of religion and spirituality to psychologists and therapists in the counselling situation. The queries concerned (a) the recognition and acceptance by counselling practitioners of the religious/spiritual dimension of a person, (b) whether religious issues, values and beliefs were seen as an integral part of psychotherapy and (c) the degree to which these practitioners saw themselves as religious or spiritual. To answer some of these root questions, the initial objective of the field study was to survey psychologists and therapists in Canberra using the Batson and Ventis (1982) Religious Life Inventory, because this was a framework for identifying the ways in which a person was religious. Added to this were some demographic questions and questions regarding the relevance of religion to work. A poor response rate led to the surveys being sent also to Sydney and Melbourne. Results from this first survey were limited. The term "religion" was found to be far more complex than at first realised, and hence objectives were modified for a second survey. The second survey focussed on perceptions of spirituality of Canberra counsellors. The survey questions were based on the studies by Shafranske and Gorsuch (1984) and Shafranske and Malony (1990). Added to these questions were demographic questions and open questions dealing with personal insights, experiences with symbols, rituals and myths. Ideas for questions were also taken from studies on religion in Australia, including Bouma and Dixon (1986) and the Australian Values Study Survey (1983). The data was analysed first by tabling frequencies, then by cross-tabulating selected variables and computing the chi-square statistic for each cross-tabulation to determine whether the relationship was significant at the 0.05 level. Results suggested that the majority of Canberra practitioners not only perceived spirituality as important to their personal life and clinical work, but also regarded themselves as spiritual people and believed in a transcendent Being and Life Force. Most saw their spirituality as entirely personal and had little connection with organised or traditional religions. Within the counselling relationship approximately half of the counsellors were willing to discuss religious issues, and nearly 90% to discuss their clients' spirituality. Female counsellors were much more likely than male to discuss a client's religious beliefs with them; other differences between the sexes were less marked. The high response rate in this study together with the significant findings indicate the value of further research in this area on a broader scale.

Pedro, Alice Magdalene. "Guidelines for the training of teachers to promote constitutional values in schools / A.M. Pedro." Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/3673.

Full text
Abstract:
This study provides guidelines for teacher training to promote the constitutional values in schools. The purpose is not to question the constitutional values or develop a new set of values. For a meaningful analysis within the limitations of a Master's dissertation, the study focuses on the General Education and Training Band (Grades Reception to Nine). Compared to foreign countries, open debate regarding values in education is relatively new in South Africa. Values are usually abstract but sometimes also physical entities to which human beings attach worth. They are common in individuals or groups through physical exposure and genetic make-up. Teaching inevitably instils values in learners. Schools often adopt a values system, which should not be imposed upon any individual learner. Values, and in particular moral values, should be taught in schools because they influence attitudes, priorities, principles, norms, standards, morals and ethics, which in turn influence decision-making, learner performance and behaviour, which affect the future of learners. In the Manifesto on values, education and democracy, the National Department of Education promotes ten constitutional values - democracy, social justice and equity, equality, non-racism and non-sexism, ubuntu (human dignity), an open society, accountability (responsibility), the rule of law, respect and reconciliation - for teaching in South African schools. The ten constitutional values are not imposed but are intended to help learners develop into good citizens in line with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (1996). The ten constitutional values should not be the only values taught in schools, as there are many other values that form an inherent part of education. At South African universities, values are included in teacher-training programmes in different forms and to varying degrees. The Higher Education HIV/Aids Programme, Revised National Curriculum Statement training, Advanced Certificate in Education and the normal curricula for pre-service teacher training are implemented at the different universities investigated. The ten constitutional and other values are integrated into all the learning areas of the Revised National Curriculum Statement. They should also therefore be integrated into teacher-training programmes. Programmes narrowly focused on the ten constitutional values should not be discouraged, as they strengthen the teaching of values in general. Values should be contextualised and purposefully infused in all teacher-training curricula. The dissertation concludes with the guidelines for the training of teachers to promote the ten constitutional values. The guidelines consider the sixteen strategies for the teaching of the ten constitutional values as outlined in the Manifesto on values, education and democracy. communication, role-modelling, literacy, human rights, arts and culture, history, religion, multilingualism, school sport, equality, anti-racism, anti-sexism, HIV/Aids, school safety, the environment and respect for diversity. The purpose of these guidelines is to guide teachers regarding which values to teach; they are thus not intended to be prescriptions on how to teach them.

Abstract:
In writing the scientific work, the author used different approaches of scientists to the interpretation of the concept of «spiritual and moral values», «cultural values». It is determined that social work as a profession arose on the basis of charitable activity – a Christian act pleasing to God, because it followed from the essence of God. Love for people, compassion, mercy, kindness were necessary conditions for helping the needy and formed the basis of modern formulation of the principles of social work. The author studies the best practices of Japan and the European Union in the development of moral, spiritual and cultural values. It was found that an important aspect of traditional Japanese culture, which seriously influenced the postwar development of the country, is the education of the Japanese specific attitude to work and knowledge. Peculiarities and specifics of formation of value professional orientations in future social workers of European countries are considered. Recommendations for the formation of value orientations of future social workers have been developed. Methodological recommendations for optimizing this process are as follows: the formation in teaching of the specifics of the development of the valuemotivational sphere of students as a key mechanism of mental self-regulation of behavior and various activities.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate which of the values of spiritual leadership emerges in the leadership of leaders in Sweden, and if there is an indication of spiritual leadership in their leadership. The theoretical framework is based on the importance of leadership in quality management, leadership values and spiritual leadership. The scientific approach is hermeneutic, inductive and the data collection method is a mixed method consisting of both questionnaire and interviews. The resultshows that all values based on spiritual leadership are used by the leaders and are also experienced by the employees. However, there is a discrepancy between the leaders and the employees' views on which ones are the most and least common. There is also a discrepancy around the extent to which values are perceived to occur in leadership. The conclusion is that there are tendencies to some indication of spiritual leadership due to that all values of spiritual leadership are experienced in the conduct of the leader, both from the leaders and the employees perspective. However, more in-depth research is required to fully determine the extent to which a spiritual leadership is used by Swedish leaders.

Abstract:
The overall goal of this thesis is to examine the newly emerging ideas and practices of spirituality and development. Spirituality and development will be discussed within the broader discourses of alternative development critiques. The issues that arise in the attempts to translate ideas of spirituality and development into practice are examined. The theoretical underpinnings of spirituality and development are analyzed, based on a literature review of spiritual, anti-colonial, post-colonial, feminist, environmental, radical economic, eco-feminist, ecumenical, geographical and anthropological critiques of development. The thesis then explores the discourses of spirituality and development within three Northern donor agencies; the International Development and Research Centre (IDRC), the World Bank and the World Council of Churches (WCC).

The aim of this PhD Thesis, entitled Spirituality and Curriculum: the teachers voice of a confessional school in Piaui State, resulting from a research conducted at a school of basic education, was to examine the extent to which the spirituality of a confessional school is revealed in the teachers voices and is present in curriculum. The discussed thematic is part of a school context that acknowledges the Christian religion and which is maintained by a Women's Religious Congregation. We emphasize three aspects developed in this study: the revelation of spirituality in teachers voice, their interaction with spirituality at school, and the prevalence of spirituality in the curriculum. The theoretical foundation of this thesis is on the works of Morin, Boff, Sacristán, Pacheco, Abramowicz, among others. A qualitative research data collection was carried out through document analysis procedures and application of two questionnaires. They reflect the urgency of a route of spiritual formation for the teacher in order that the teaching and learning process reaches the ideal of an education directed towards an education in values and for values, an education whose objective centers on the integral formation process of human beings. In this context, the relevance of this research is related to the possibility of providing an education which allows enough space to attitudes and behaviors of welcoming, respect, availability, generosity, solidarity with each other, knowing that we are responsible for each other as well as that spirituality provides grounds to both the pedagogical practice and the curriculum of confessional schools

The scope of the present research is to point the relevance of Origen of Alexandria s message in the XXIst century, based on the study of his V Homily The exit of the sons of Israel . The research starts with a reflection on the borders among Religion Science, Theology, and Language Science, followed by comments on the singularity of narrative as mystical experience, and an introduction to Alfonso López Quintás Método Lúdico Ambital (MLA), to be used as a methodological tool. The first chapter presents the social, political and religious environment that preceded and permeated the consolidation of Christian religion s identity, during the first three centuries. The historical context and the philosophical and religious ideas of that period, and their influence on Christian religion s identification process, are investigated, as well as their influence on the first canon of the Holy Scriptures. Finally, the spiritual path s notion, as an expression of the Soul s aspiration in Jewish-Christian vision, and specifically for Origen is described. In the second chapter, Origins main characteristics are outlined. His thought, life and deeds are used as parameters to define him as theologian and pedagogue. Origen is situated within his generation of theologians and his pioneering building of certain Christian constructs, that brought him friends and foes, are highlighted; his homily literature methodology is reviewed and the sources pointed out. After this introduction to Origen, the structure of the V Homily is described. The third chapter starts with a reflection on sacred messages timelessness, and then the V Homily is transcribed, for a critical analysis of Origins teaching method, with his allegoric, mystical and ethical pedagogy. The MLA is proposed as an ancillary hermeneutic tool, using Gabriel Perissé s didactic, to better understand Origen s message, within the worldview and experience of each reader. With this research, a contribution is expected to a better understanding in Brazil of patristic texts, basic to the foundation of Christianity as a religion, and indispensable to understand the nowadays worldwide Christianity development in course

Abstract:
The purpose of this study, which primarily focuses on spiritual values, was to develop a measurement for nine spiritual anchors – perfection, compassion, passion, inspiration, investigation, dedication, appreciation, determination and cooperation – as proposed by Karakas (2010). Through the development of such a measurement, the concept and construct of spiritual anchors was investigated and definitions were refined. After reviewing the literature on workplace spirituality and personal values, a Spiritual Value Compass Inventory was developed. The 350 responses received after distributing the inventory to a sample of South African MBA students was analysed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The findings from these analyses yielded a spiritual value compass model. The spiritual value compass model outlines the spiritual anchors held by this diverse group of businesspeople, which was shaped as “passion”, “compassion”, “investigation” and “determination”. These anchors bear relevance to Karakas’ (2010) original framework for spiritual anchors, however, they have been refined through empirical evidence. The Spiritual Value Compass Inventory and the Spiritual Value Compass model provide professionals and managers with tools to understanding their spirituality and value compasses, and could form part of an important step towards preparing these business leaders to manage and create a workforce that is motivated to perform optimally.

Bassett, Lynn. "Spiritual caregiving silence : an exploration of the phenomenon and its value in end-of-life care." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2016. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/85911/.

Full text
Abstract:
Towards the end of life, silence seems to take increasing prominence in caregiving relationships. A complex phenomenon, silence has been less explored than verbal interventions, yet to be an effective element of care, silence requires skill and practice from professional caregivers. This research, undertaken in the United Kingdom between 2013 and 2016, sought a deeper understanding of a type of silence that contributes to palliative spiritual care. A two phase phenomenological methodology was adopted, using heuristic inquiry and hermeneutic phenomenology. Data were gathered through self-inquiry and unstructured interviews with 15 palliative care chaplains. A descriptive and hermeneutic analysis facilitated explication of the lived experience to produce an interpretation of the nature, meaning and value of spiritual caregiving silence in end-of-life care. Spiritual caregiving silence emerges as a way of being with another person, complementary to speech and non-verbal communication, in which the caregiver takes both an active and participative role. It evokes a sense of companionship and connection and creates accompanied space, allowing the other person to be with themselves in a way they may not be able to be alone; this demands a depth of engagement from the caregiver. Silence provides a means of, and medium for, communication beyond the capacity of words and has the potential to enable change, leading to expression and acknowledgment of truth. It offers patients, and their families, opportunities to find acceptance, restoration and peace. The thesis concludes that spiritual caregiving silence is a person-centred phenomenon that supports the wellbeing of patients at the end of life, and their family members, by drawing on cross-disciplinary knowledge and experience. The interpretive process, illuminated by examples of specialist lived experience, has produced a deeper understanding of the phenomenon that may find resonance with the experience of other caregivers, to stimulate further discussion and inform clinical practice.

Van, der Merwe Adriaan Ferreira. "Vulnerable embodiment : a critical analysis of Henri Nouwen’s spiritual formation theology and its possible value for the discourse on Gender and Health." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/97011.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates whether the counter-cultural spiritual formation theology of Henri Nouwen could make a significant contribution to the discourse on an inclusive, gender-equitable, spirituality-based approach to holistic health. An analysis of Nouwen’s literary output reveals that three main relationships feature in the majority of his works: the relationship to self, the relationship to others and the relationship to God. This foundational framework of Nouwen is then used to structure the rest of the study to get an indication of the possible enduring value of certain core concepts that Nouwen developed within his triad of “movements” toward wholeness. In his thinking about the movement of Reaching out to our Fellow Human Beings, the concept of Vulnerability emerged as a key component of his theology. This forms the focus of investigation in Chapter 3 of this study. The movement of Reaching out to our Innermost Self led to an evaluation of the current usefulness of Nouwen’s seminal thinking on Embodiment, in chapter 4. In Chapter 5 the possible value of Nouwen’s lifelong engagement with Mystery as basis for his movement of Reaching Out to our God, is considered. In each of these chapters Nouwen’s possible contribution is brought into conversation with the current discourse in this field. This study then suggests that following the “downwardly mobile” way of Henri Nouwen’s spirituality of vulnerable embodiment could add a valuable contemplative dimension to the current conversation on global health and wellness. This approach may open up a range of important questions in the areas of vulnerability, embodiment and mysticism.

Abstract:
The field of mediation has emerged as one of the premier tools in the peacemaking process. While mediation has grown in popularity and become widely accepted in the judicial court system and corporate America, very few studies have focused on how mediators are impacted by the conflict resolution process. Moreover, few studies have focused on the role of spiritual self-care on the mediator. This research study explored how mediators who identify as spiritual integrate their spirituality in their own self-care practice. In order for mediation to continue as one of the most important tools in the peacemaking process, mediators of today and the future must have effective and beneficial self-care practices to perform professionally at a high level. This study utilized transcendental phenomenology to capture the lived experiences of 11 conflict professionals who incorporate spirituality into their self-care practices. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore how they practiced self-care and the essence of what spiritual self-care entailed. The major themes identified in this study were: (a) mediators spiritual practices were used as tools for preparation and protection in conflict work, (b) spiritual practices invoked deep and meaningful feelings of connectedness, and (c) that spiritually identifying mediators began to embody the same practices they used. Essentially, spiritual self-care was vital to being effective in their professional lives. Mediators were able to offer deep value to their clients through their spirituality and simultaneously found deep value in their spiritual self-care practices. The research was significant, as it allowed for a deeper understanding of conflict practitioners and could benefit the personal and professional growth of the mediation field.

Keck, Charles. "Radical reflexivity : assessing the value of psycho-spiritual practices of self as a medium for the professional development of teachers." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10020707/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis discusses a case study of a psycho-spiritual retreat programme comprising an eclectic bricolage of technologies of self, ranging from the contemplative, to the artistic and the psychotherapeutic. It explores the possibility that such practices can be understood as a Foucauldian care of self, enabling teachers to participate in a radical reflexivity around subjectivity. It is argued that such reflexivity, whilst not directly concerned with teachers' professional identity, is transformative within their professional practice. Evidence to substantiate this hypothesis is sought in semi-structured interviews with participating Spanish and Mexican teachers. These interviews explore the teachers' understandings of their 'before', 'during' and 'after'. What had they experienced? How had it affected their understandings of themselves? How had these new understandings affected the ongoing construction of their identity as teachers? Interview data is organized and analysed through three complementary areas of problematization; Questions of Purpose, Questions of Order, and Questions of Performance. Evidence in and around these fields is embedded in a debate around subjectivity, teacher identity and education informed by thinkers of becoming including Nietzsche, Foucault, Deleuze and Britzman. Assessment of the value of the experience is also made using the psycho-spiritual referents of the retreat programme itself, as elaborated by its founder Claudio Naranjo. The empirical-theoretical analysis of narrative evidence poses questions about the established limits of traditional teacher development opportunities and of the 'service' oriented paradigm of professional ethics. The care of the self as a radical reflexivity, in which the teacher examines their constitution as human beings, might provide 'a way out' for teachers stuck uncreatively in their own historical subjectivities and the dominant educational paradigms. In such a way concrete examples of radical reflexivity in action could usefully contribute to debates occurring around alternatives in teacher identity discourse.

With advances of modern technologies our post- modern society increasingle has to deal with lack of aesthetics and culture. The analysis of spirituality phenomennon enables us that, above all. spirituality is very significant because it has to do with the human essence and his divine origine. Secondly, spirituality os of grate importance from the pedagogical point of view when we wish to develop an all- rounded personality. Spirituality involves everything asociated with human vitality, his povers, energy, strength and will the system of spiritual values is comprised of main values such as kindness, beauty, the truth, as well as harmony between the mind and feelings, faith, freedom, transcendental alation, responsibility, decency, concience, duty, peace of mind, kindness, friendliness, love of God and one's neighbour, spirituality activities and prayers. The development of personality by means of sacred art is one of effective ways to encourage the development of spiritual values. Gregorian chorals, as the most spiritual way of singing distinguishes itself by its singing peculiarity such as peace, beauty, perfect expression of the word , simplicity, meaning fullness and sacredness. These features stimulate spiritual development. How actively the spiritual value system works depends on the experience of choral singing, the environment, theoretical knowledge and understanding of its designation. Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to field test a unit of lessons in which students explore how a variety of social issues and value systems impact the meaning expressed in their artwork. By exposing students to different systems of belief, their historical contexts, and providing opportunities for students to discuss, research and symbolically express meaning I hope to develop critical thinking skills; promote increase in the social conscience of teenagers; help students develop critical thinking skills; promote student active involvement in their community at large; encourage social activism; and help students become part of the larger global community. The study utilized pre and post written tests, student artwork, student written responses and an auto-ethnographic approach to document student outcomes. Although evidence of progress was observed there is a need for additional research about ways art education might be used to assist students in the development of a social conscience and awareness of the global community.

Chabot, Cecil. "Cannibal Wihtiko: Finding Native-Newcomer Common Ground." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/33452.

Full text
Abstract:
Two prominent historians, David Cannadine and Brad Gregory, have recently contended that history is distorted by overemphasis on human difference and division across time and space. This problem has been acute in studies of Native-Newcomer relations, where exaggeration of Native pre-contact stability and post-contact change further emphasized Native-Newcomer difference. Although questioned in economic, social and political spheres, emphasis on cultural difference persists. To investigate the problem, this study examined the Algonquian wihtiko (windigo), an apparent exemplar of Native-Newcomer difference and division. With a focus on the James Bay Cree, this study first probed the wihtiko phenomenon’s Native origins and meanings. It then examined post-1635 Newcomer encounters with this phenomenon: from the bush to public opinion and law, especially between 1815 and 1914, and in post-1820 academia. Diverse archives, ethnographies, oral traditions, and academic texts were consulted. The cannibal wihtiko evolved from Algonquian attempts to understand and control rare but extreme mental and moral failures in famine contexts. It attained mythical proportions, but fears of wihtiko possession, transformation and violence remained real enough to provoke pre-emptive killings even of family members. Wihtiko beliefs also influenced Algonquian manifestations and interpretations of generic mental and moral failures. Consciously or not, others used it to scapegoat, manipulate, or kill. Newcomers threatened by moral and mental failures attributed to the wihtiko often took Algonquian beliefs and practices seriously, even espousing them. Yet Algonquian wihtiko behaviours, beliefs and practices sometimes presented Newcomers with another layer of questions about mental and moral incompetence. Collisions arose when they discounted, misconstrued or asserted control over Algonquian beliefs and practices. For post-colonial critics, this has raised a third layer of questions about intellectual and moral incompetence. Yet some critics have also misconstrued earlier attempts to understand and control the wihtiko, or attributed an apparent lack of scholarly consensus to Western cultural incompetence or inability to grasp the wihtiko. In contrast, this study of wihtiko phenomena reveals deeper commonalities and continuities. They are obscured by the complex evolution of Natives’ and Newcomers’ struggles to understand and control the wihtiko. Yet hidden in these very struggles and the wihtiko itself is a persistent shared conviction that reducing others to objects of power signals mental and moral failure. The wihtiko reveals cultural differences, changes and divisions, but exemplifies more fundamental commonalities and continuities.

Lundie, David Charles Athanasius. "The Other in the curriculum : ethnographic case studies on the spiritual, moral, social and cultural dimensions of religious education in sites of value commitment and contestation in the UK." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2011. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2654/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent public debates over the place of religious education in the curriculum have focused attention on the threshold status of the subject. While the subject makes claims to an academic standing equal to others in the humanities, for many years its status in the curriculum has relied on a multiplicity of claims as to the effectiveness of religious education in preparing young people for life in a multicultural society. Beginning with an appreciation of the factors which have influenced policymakers and key theorists, this thesis traces the conflicts and controversies in the definition of the subject. Approaches to religious truth claims and cultural practices in the curriculum are evaluated with reference to prominent public critiques of the subject. Although these approaches are neither exhaustive nor exclusive, they form the basis of anxieties about the place of religious education in the curriculum. These anxieties are located within a broader crisis of multiculturalism and anxieties about the role of values in an increasingly performative and examination-driven educational environment. Employing an ethnographic paradigm, a series of in-depth case studies were carried out in secondary schools in Scotland, Northern Ireland and England in 2009, with particular emphasis on students between the ages of 14 and 16. In the course of these case studies, two strands of data analysis emerged, with findings clustered around 10 key themes. A linguistic approach at times takes priority within the analytical framework, while other data lends itself to multimodal analysis, providing rich contextualisation for the linguistic encounters. Focusing on four case studies, some key pedagogical approaches relating to the ways in which religious education deals with religious and cultural commitment and diversity are examined in detail. This analysis, drawing on theological and pedagogical theories, provides a richly contextualised series of findings relating to the spiritual, social and affective dimensions of religious education, in critical sites where identities and truth claims are highly valued and highly contested. The depth and authenticity called for in these contexts go beyond performative and examination-driven approaches, requiring a robust sense of teachers’ professional values and identity. Key strengths emerge in observed practice which are not reflected in pedagogical literature. The empirical findings have relevance to public debate about the aims, practices and models of effectiveness in British RE.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the ways in which Christian faith ‘adds value’ to the ‘carescape’ and ‘caringscapes’ of statutory hostels for people experiencing homelessness in the United Kingdom. The ways that a distinctively Christian organisational ethos is created and experienced through the material, regulatory and performative dimensions of space, place and subjectivity, are explored through a case study of the Salvation Army’s contemporary statutory accommodation services for single homeless people. Drawing upon Cloke’s notions of ‘theo-ethics’ and Conradson’s concept of ‘therapeutic landscape experience’, the links between spirituality, care and ‘value added’ are examined from the perspective of staff, volunteers and service users. This analysis extends the debate on the potential for faith-based organisations to make a distinctive and valuable contribution to care for people experiencing homelessness, by foregrounding the spiritual and emotional dimensions that texture these organisational landscapes of care. A feminist epistemological approach is taken to illuminate the nuances of care-giving and care-receiving, with particular attention paid to the emotional and spiritual sensitivities underpinning social interactions, and how these dimensions are perceived, narrated and experienced from a variety of perspectives. Using an ethnographic methodology, this study involved the undertaking of 91 semi-structured interviews, a six-week period of participant observation in a specific Salvation Army Lifehouse, and attendance at four professional social service and chaplaincy conferences run by the Salvation Army UK. The research findings suggest that Christianity adds value to these institutional spaces of care in a highly nuanced way, dependent on one’s subjectivity. A second observation is that the potential for faith to add value within statutory arenas of care for the homeless is being compromised due to the pressures associated with the incumbent neoliberal contract culture within which Lifehouses are embedded. A third contribution concerns the potential for a faith-based organisation to act as a crucible for the emergence of postsecular rapprochement: it is suggested that an intersectional approach to analysing this socio-spatial process is necessary, due to the strategic role that gender, age, sexuality and race were revealed to play in fostering, or dissipating, the affective relationships that underpinned fragile moments of rapprochement.

Abstract:
A critical evaluation of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) was undertaken to uncover strategies for infusing values across the curricula – values that may facilitate the development of spiritual intelligence (SQ) in adolescents. A literature study was conducted to determine whether SQ may be harnessed to cultivate values within an educational context. In addition, moral and spiritual development in adolescence was explored and a case made for values-education. An empirical investigation was undertaken using both a qualitative research design and semi-structured interviews. A purposive sample was used comprising 14 education specialists, principals and Life Orientation teachers from six secondary schools in Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces. The most important finding was the fact that values-education in the NCS was problematic. The conclusion was thus drawn that teachers should be trained to incorporate values within curriculum activities − values that could engender SQ and, thus, address the moral dilemmas in our schools.

Faris, Solomon Belay. "Restoring Local Spiritual and Cultural Values in Science Education: The Case of Ethiopia." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/33991.

Abstract:
It has been repeatedly observed that home and local context matter in the education of children. A smooth transition between home and classroom prepares children for enjoyable and meaningful life-long learning. Knowledge building in children is influenced by previous experience, values, beliefs and sociocultural factors associated with community. Against this theoretical background, the thesis examined the integration of local spiritual and cultural values to improve science education in Ethiopia. This autoethnographic research used in-depth interviews, supplementary observations and focus group discussion and my biography to identify the perception and practice of common and unique spiritual and cultural values. The study examined whether these values were included and/or excluded in the school curriculum and explored the possibilities for incorporating values in science education and the anticipated tensions resulting from their inclusion. Students, science teachers, parents, employers, curriculum experts, policymakers, elders, and religious leaders participated in the research, conducted in a randomly selected secondary school in Addis Ababa. The sampling followed a kind of snowball method, with a total of twenty key informants participating in interviews, fifteen classroom observations, and one focus group discussion. The data collection aimed at generating stories, which underlie the autoethnography methodology. Findings indicated that belief in and fear of God animated and sustained the Ethiopian way of life. Although spiritual teachings derived from sacred writings were the initial foundation for Ethiopian cultural norms, the two merged together later, creating a mosaic pervading every aspect of life in Ethiopia. Education was sustained on this merger of spiritual and cultural norms and values. It was also shown that the now century-old system of formal education did not incorporate those local spiritual and cultural values. Current science education also has little relationship to Ethiopian spiritual and cultural norms and is, therefore, in need of restoration. Findings showed that efforts to recapture local spiritual and cultural values in the curriculum may encounter obstacles and tensions. Clearly, the future of a more prosperous Ethiopia depends on the extent to which curriculum stakeholders can overcome these obstacles and put in place a relevant, contextual, and holistic education.

"The religious and spiritual values that motivate older African-American women to volunteer in their communities." Tulane University, 2008.

Find full text
Abstract:
This phenomenological study investigates the religious and spiritual values of older African American women with an emphasis on how values motivate volunteering in the Black community. Research questions were posed to older African-American women through focus groups at community centers located in six neighborhoods. The responses to the research questions provide an understanding of the religious and spiritual values; indicate how values were learned, transmitted, and practiced within the context of volunteerism; and clarify what is helpful to motivate and maintain the practice of volunteering The descriptive voices of older African-American women are shown in the data analysis indicating major themes that emerged. Themes are interpreted using womanist theology and the Black helping tradition. These two paradigms provide lenses from which to view the intersection of race, gender, religiousness and spirituality, age, and class. Findings indicate religious and spiritual values motivate older African-American women to volunteer in order to strengthen their neighborhoods. Diverse value based volunteer activities that form a helping tradition are described and reflect practices that connect individuals, families, organizations, and neighborhoods. The limitations of the research and future research are discussed. Implications for the social work profession are presented with an emphasis on education, research, direct service, and policy practices

Ferreira, Cheryl. "Educational strategies for the development of spiritual intelligence (SQ) in South African secondary schools." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/21136.

Full text
Abstract:
The main research question of the study was: How can spiritual intelligence (SQ) be developed in secondary school students? This was motivated out of concern for the moral degeneration that secondary school students experience in South Africa. The literature review focused on the nature of SQ and how it can foster adaptive functioning and transformation in adolescents and the complexity of Religion Education (RE) in South African secondary schools. A case was made for developing educational strategies that can develop SQ in adolescents and create educational environments that not only encourages students to engage in dialogue that involves a broader conversation about religion and spirituality, but also supports transformational learning. The empirical investigation to evaluate the approach and educational strategies that were used, implemented a qualitative case study design. Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence (MI) theory and the social constructivist theory were used as conceptual frameworks. Purposive and convenient sampling was employed to select ten Grade 11 students in a secondary school in Gauteng that reflected the demographics of the country’s population. Qualitative data collection included reflective activities and informal conversation interviews. Field notes were kept and all observations were documented in a self-reflective journal. This was followed by a focus group session and semi-structured interviews. Findings revealed that the educational strategies had the capacity to develop core traits and mental abilities of SQ, provide peak experiences and enhance virtuous behaviour in adolescents. It was concluded that education should include content around the nature of SQ in conjunction with reflective and experiential activities. SQ provided a platform for epistemic relativity. It was thus concluded that SQ can be deliberately developed in South African secondary school contexts. The recommendations focussed on the role of institutions of higher learning in sensitising stakeholders regarding the relevance of SQ in South African educational contexts; training of in-service teachers; the importance of Life Orientation (LO) as conveyer of SQ and the role of the LO teacher in cascading SQ down to school students. Finally, a SQ training workshop was proposed. The study concluded with recommendations for further research. The limitations of the study were also presented.

Pieterse, Cornelius Louwrens. "Vergelykende studie na die kerklike diens van genesing." Thesis, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/15783.

Abstract:
Text in Afrikaans
Throughout history the healing ministry has been one of the outstanding activities of the church of Jesus Christ which remained continuously and for various reasons the focal point of attention. The past decades were characterized by an escalation of believers from different denominations and groups who became involved in the meditation and practicing of the healing ministry in the church. This escalation has resulted in the healing ministry being practiced in multiple ways and various reasons being given as justification for doing so. This was done in the presence of underlying theories of which the practitioners were either consciously or subconsciously aware or unaware of. The present research explores the theories and practices of the healing ministry within a particular academic and ecclesiastical context. A comparative study was undertaken by means of a qualitative investigation covering the work of two divergent institutions namely: The London Healing Mission (which is supervised by the Anglican Church and therefore has a specific tradition) and the Vineyard Christian Fellowship, Boise, USA, which is a 'new' congregation and fits in with the so called Third Wave movement. The theories and practices of both these ministries are identified and compared with one another. Various conclusions are reached through this comparison, referring amongst others to the healing ministry's right of existence and the format in which it should be practiced. Remarks that are being·made with regard to the results of the research should be of value to the Pentecostal, Charismatic and Reformed churches in particular, but to the Church in general as well. These results are also used to design a ministering model for the healing ministry. The study concludes with certain recommendations for possible future research.
