Olds, Victoria Sikes. "The relationships between object relations development, God image, spiritual maturity, and religious fundamentalism among Christians." Diss., Texas A&M University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/86014.

Full text
Abstract:
This study attempts to incorporate religious fundamentalism into an existing framework for understanding spiritual variables from an object relations perspective of development. Out of this theory have emerged two constructs-image of God and spiritual maturity-which are both spiritually and developmentally oriented. Based on theoretical considerations, it was hypothesized that religious fundamentalism would be connected to lower levels of object relations development and spiritual maturity, and more negative God images. Eighty-five Christians from 18-68 years old were therefore administered four inventories that measured these four constructs. Although mainly weak correlations for the overall sample were found, for students religious fundamentalism was linked to lower levels of object relations development, as hypothesized. Implications of this and other findings are explored.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess whether spiritual well-being and social support functioned as protective variables (moderators) for body dissatisfaction among college women. A hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine whether spiritual well-being and social support predicted body dissatisfaction, as well as if there was an interaction between the two variables. Approximately 100 female participants between the ages of 18 and 31 were recruited from the psychology department to participate in this study. Expanding the knowledge base on spiritual well-being, social support, and body dissatisfaction can facilitate awareness of preventative measures that may be beneficial to young women experiencing body dissatisfaction.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the consideration of the sources of formation and, consequently, to the understanding of the essence of man not only as a thinking, but also spiritual being. As the main stages of the formation of man as a spiritual being, the aesthetic, ethical and philosophical stage of the formation of spirituality is considered. Formation of the aesthetic form of the spiritual appearance of the individual is the formation of an openness to the world a sense of sanctity and world-worship. It is associated with a special position in man in space, is the result of his creative activity, as the ability to simultaneously realize the power, admire the formidable forces of nature and resist them, to realize the mystery of the world order. form a cathartic feeling of the sublime. As a result of shock, surprise and confusion, an exalted sense of spirituality, openness to the world, the ability to self-transcendence and self-alienation, as an ability to understand one's spiritual vocation, arises. The next stages consider the formation of a noospheric, responsible person, as an ethical form of spirituality, the passionarity of the individual, and, finally, its philosophical form, as the perception of contradictions and the problems of social and individual being.

Nicholson, Helen Jane. "Images of the Military Orders, 1128-1291 : spiritual, secular, romantic." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/4725.

Full text
Abstract:
The intention of this study is to examine attitudes towards the military orders, in particular the international orders of the Temple, the Hospital and the Teutonic order, between papal recognition of the order of the Temple in 1128, and the final destruction of the kingdom of Jerusalem in 1291, both in the light of recent studies of attitudes towards crusading, and seeking to illuminate the circumstances behind the trial and destruction of the order of the Temple in the early fourteenth century. The study examines the opinions held of the military orders in different sections of society, the rulers of Catholic Christendom, the clergy and the laity. It also discusses the fictional image woven around the orders by chroniclers and the writers of epics and romances; the former adapting traditional topoi, the latter drawing on reality. Finally, there is an examination of the measures taken by the orders to form and improve their image in the eyes of Christendom. Much of the criticism of the military orders was directed at them as regular orders, but they received less criticism than other groups within the Church. In the second half of the thirteenth century the orders' relative unpopularity decreased, as the friars' privileges began to attract criticism, and as European interest in the Holy Land waned. They retained a good reputation as knights of Christ, even after the loss of Acre. Although all of the military orders attracted praise and criticism, the main attention of chroniclers and storytellers was on the order of the Temple, which was seen to epitomize the concept of the military order. It claimed to be, and was widely recognized as, above all others responsible for the defence of the Holy Land; hence it was more vulnerable to criticism than the other military orders.

Manda, Charles Bester. "Re-Authroing narratives of trauma survivors in kwazulu-natal spiritual perspective." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/40211.

Full text
Abstract:
In his thesis, Re-authoring life narratives of trauma survivors in KwaZulu-Natal: Spiritual perspective, the researcher investigates a holistic understanding of the effects of trauma on surviving individuals and communities historically affected by political violence in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Traditionally, the exploration of the impact of trauma on survivors in South Africa has been focused mainly on the bio-psycho-social aspects. The Bio-psycho-social approach recognises that trauma affects people on several dimensions- biological, social and psychological. However, Nevid (et al 2006:19) and Kaminer (et al 2012) acknowledge that these bio-psychosocial factors are incomplete for us to understand the effects of trauma on the individual and call for consideration of all possible pathways and account for multiple factors, influences, and interactions. Using qualitative and narrative approach, personal life narratives were listened to with the aim of looking in depth at the effects of traumatic experiences on the research participants, and specifically investigate whether, and how trauma affected their spirituality. The findings show that the research participants sustained psychological, moral and spiritual injuries during and after traumatic experiences. The results concur with Buckenham’s (1999:7-8) argument that trauma wreaks its toll in the life of a person emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, in our relationships with ourselves, others and with God. The study also established that regardless of religious affiliation, research participants turned to spiritual resources for answers, healing and recovery in traumatic situations. Therefore, the study recommends the integration of the spiritual perspective to reach a holistic model of understanding and treating traumatized individuals and communities. Although the study is localised in the South African context, the results have a much wider relevance in understanding the role of ‘posttraumatic spirituality’ in the re-authoring of life narratives shattered by trauma.

Abstract:
How the artist deals with death, loss and the spiritual has been a major theme of art throughout history. New media tools provide renewed opportunity to explore these themes while testing the tools against a familiar subject. This research attempts to deal with these themes by examining and reinterpreting them through myths while evaluating the tools of creative media. In so doing, this has the potential to uncover any revealing insights that are relevant to the times. The project uses myth to explore the potential of the interaction between 2D digital images and 3D virtual environments. Elements of particular significance in the 3D virtual environment - such as Lighting and Point of View - are examined from the perspective of an artist who has practised only in 2D. Twelve final works have been generated for this project and presented as large-scale digital prints, along with a short video piece. In particular, the research explores 3D lighting techniques of 2D images by applying theatrical protocols within a virtual, computer-generated environment, and using myth as context and driving principle. The idea of theatre 'flats' has been applied as a device within the virtual realm to provide a conceptual housing and rationale for virtual lighting techniques, virtual camera techniques, digital rendering and digital printing.

Abstract:
This thesis, started under the direction of Daniel Arasse, looks at Renaissance painting from 1303 to 1608 and examines its essential paradox: how could the natural and spiritual worlds• be brought into contact in a painting that was at once mime tic (following Alberti) and Christian, and hence dedicated to representing the unrepresentable, the invisible, and the incommensurable. In opposition to the unity of medieval symbolic montages, Renaissance painting saw the appearance of a border, an edge, a margin, a crossing. This never-to-be-resolved, paradoxical and unstable border opened onto three centuries of intense creativity, which reflected, in visual thought, the gradual change in cosmological and theological ideas. The question of the border allows us to reinterpret questions of frame and thresholds: the sculpted architecture of the polyptychs at the culminating point of the ecclesial path, the real or painted frames of paintings, the windows, and so on. It also has a bearing on particular figurative objects which, like so many "strange attractors", blur the Aristotelian mimesis in a "disfiguring" pictoriality or dislocate Aristotle's place: witness the angels, the curtains, the drapes, the rising and descending fumes of fire or ice, the clouds, the flames, the checkered patterns, the frames, the doors to paradise or to the virginal chamber, the balustrades. Finally, the question of the border allows us to probe structures of figuration and show again how perspective is, in reality, a theological device. It is embedded in a history of the material and spiritual eye and in a history of the image. In the "era of the image", as defined by Hans Belting, sometimes the image itself is revealed in an unsettling epiphany to be a border of worlds

Abstract:
Hildegard's songs evoke an erotic and embodied devotion to a Divinity imagined as sensuous, relational, immanent and often female. These songs, written for use in her predominantly female community, are part of Hildegard's educational program to guide the spiritual development of the women in her Benedictine monastery. Hildegard's theology of music proposes that the physical act of singing enables humans to experience connection to the Living Light (Hildegard's most common address for the voice of the Holy Presence in her visions, lux vivens), and to embody this Divinity in their midst. Her songs express, in dense poetic texts set to widely-ranging chant-like melodies, her rich imaging of the fecund presence of the Divine. The singers are thus encouraged to imagine themselves in relationship with the Holy One, the Living Light, through the physical act of singing these evocative songs. This dissertation analyses four of Hildegard's songs, representing a small cross section of her musical oeuvre. The analysis elucidates the way in which the music affectively conveys the meaning and significance of the texts. Carefully incising the "flesh" from the structural "bones" of the melodies reveals underlying organising configurations which pervade the songs and deliver the texts in a distinctive manner. Hildegard professed herself to be musically uneducated because she lacked a knowledge of music notation, although she admitted to extensive experience in singing Divine Office. However, she clearly claims to be the oral composer of her songs, arranging late in her life for music scribes to notate her melodies. My analysis unravels the influence of the oral composer as it intersects with the influence of the musically trained scribes who neumed her texts. Hildegard wrote that the "words symbolize the body, and the jubilant music indicates the spirit" (Scivias 3:12:13). She claims that the music conveys the meaning of the texts with affective power, and my analysis shows ways in which the oral composer endeavors to achieve this goal. Her texts, conveyed by her melodies and thus intimately entwined with the words they deliver, are powerfully persuasive forces in the spiritual education of the women in her monastery. This dissertation uncovers significant insights which can inform the communal practice of worship of the Divine, especially where song forms part of that worship, and particularly in regard to the imagining of Divinity in ways which can nourish the diversity of all humans, all creatures, and all creation. The work of feminist theologians is brought into dialogue with Hildegard's imagery and educational purpose, thus making available ways of imagining the Divine which are especially important for contemporary women, who have suffered from being excluded from the imago Dei. Thus the dissertation unearths a rich lode of female, and creatural embodied images, which threads its way though the millennia, but now needs to be mined to uncover images that might work for contemporary Christians seeking multiple imaging of the Divine to touch the deep feminist, ecological and liberative yearnings of many hearts and spirits.

Abstract Art Expression of Spiritual Image and Humane Concern The focus of art expression is: what is art to express, and how to express? The former question is related to the theme and content of art, while the latter is related to its expressive form, style, media, and skills. Nevertheless, whether the theme and content, or the style and form of art expression, they are both associated with the soul image of the creator. The soul consists not only of the entire nerve system, but also of the whole universe. As the soul extends infinitely, it can sense any matter and objects in any space and time. Image is, however, the vision generated from inner experience; it is an vision entity which is a product through instantaneous combination of consciousness and sub consciousness. Soul image is the consciousness, sub consciousness, or value orientation made up of our life, experience, memory, personality…etc. Hence, soul image can be deemed as the inexhaustible fountain of inspiration for art expression. From the appeal of “emancipation of the soul” at the end of eighteenth century to the end of the calamity of two world wars, human beings started to re-contemplate the positioning of technological sense and soul intuition. Through introspection and criticism, the researcher perceives that only by grace of human reflection and concern, and elevating the quality of soul, can we avoid the objectification and alienation resulted from industrialization and digitalization. Human concern refers to the concern on “human”, with emphasis on the liberation of soul or the emancipation of spirit, which is precisely the self-awareness of human nature that humanists attempted to rebuild ever since ancient time. Through theory development and creation introspection, the researcher determines that the content of personal soul image is centralized in nature, environment, society, and culture, as well as in the images of animals, plants, and natural environment; it also encompasses the concern on current social issues, which reveals the researcher’s care for human nature. Therefore, the gist of this research is human nature set on humane concern, with its style focused on expressiveness, and its purpose is to, by employing rich images deep in the soul to exhibit the researcher’s concern on nature, environment, society, and culture. Accordingly, the researcher entitled the ideal of the creation as “the art expression of soul image and human concern”, by which gradual discussion of theory and realization of creation shall be conducted. In order to present the ideal of the creation, in terms of its realization, the creator has accomplished 21 works regarding three layers of aspects: “the respect for life”, “the criticism on society”, and “the concern on ecology”. Through the researching process of this creation, the researcher has gained much precious experience, touching elements, and inspiration; thus acquired further acknowledgement on the content and correlation among art expression, soul image, and human concern. Stated below are with 7 key points of this research: 1.Art derives from earnest concern and touching essence: beauty emerges from touching essence, which arises from the sincerity and care of the soul. 2.Art is the pursuit of inner life: image is equipped with inner nature, and art with inner life. 3.Art is the integration of human spirits: art should express human spirit, which is functional of adjusting the unbalance in reason and sensibility, and of regulating the divergence of self from tradition. 4.Resonance can be inspired by the incorporation of absolute value into epochal value: art plays an essential role in an epoch, and is capable of inspiring general spiritual resonance. 5.Soul image can be disclosed with the fusion of simultaneity and automation: in art works, the fusion of skills like images-overlap, space-time interlacing, and automation…etc, is capable of revealing deep hidden soul images. 6.Significance can be transformed through the interaction between perceptions and concepts: art is the media of expression and communication, through which perceptive images and theme concepts would be mutually affected, while creators and appreciators interact reciprocally to form new significance of the work. 7.Art style can be established by accentuating cultural features: art content initiates from self-awareness in human nature, with its expressive form originating from soul image. To build up unique style, regional and cultural traits must be highlighted.

The researcher tries to make records of the body changes from personal harrowing experiences through creative pictorial forms, including headache, stomachache, period pain, and different emotions. With the utmost spiritual freedom given by artistic creation, the possibilities of various forms can be excluded; the researcher proceeds to decode, recombine and reforge, calling out the existential thinking which conceals in the spiritual images. Through artistic creation and self-expression, the researcher can liberally release from and adjust negative emotions or annoyances caused by body presentation, and bring forth sotamophychic consciousness and realization through the procedure for interpreting, decoding, analyzing and exploring them. With the results from this paper, the researcher makes records of spiritual images, from passive evasion to frank acceptance; finally develops a procedure for active confrontment and release of body imagery; shows personal implicit spiritual characteristics and images; deeply experiences physical pain; and helps herself relieve and expel sotamophychic suffering. By means of the symbolized images of painting, she can also merge her emotional, aesthetic viewpoints, and achieve the ultimate goal of release and self-healing with the integrative development of body imagery creation.

Abstract:
Mankind’s scientific, technological, artistic, and intellectual capacities are complemented by an impressive list of physical achievements; nevertheless, it is the remarkable inner abilities that testify to the human being as God’s crowning creation. The single most distinctive aspect of Adam’s creation is that he was created in the image of God and his nature bears that image. But what exactly is the image of God in man? The image of God consists of the spiritual part of a human that reflects the character of God and is the only firm basis for advocating human dignity and the gracious redemption of sinners. Although modern scholarship, particularly Old Testament scholarship, have argued for man’s function through his physical body as the meaning of or forming an integral part of the image of God, the view that God’s image is found in the spiritual aspect of the human being is more faithful to the biblical text. This dissertation argues for the spiritual interpretation of God’s image by providing a historical-grammatical reading of the relevant texts and a proper theological understanding of the image and likeness of God. The first chapter provides the history of interpretation by describing the important personalities and their methods, and explaining the evolution of the topic that has lead to the modern departures from the traditional view. The second chapter discusses the data that supports the thesis by analyzing selected issues in current scholarship that leads to a physical and functional view of the image of God and why I disagree with their conclusions. The third chapter provides a historical-grammatical reading of selected texts that demonstrate the reasonableness of a spiritual interpretation of the image of God, and why it should be defended. The fourth chapter examines the counter claims to the thesis and presents a defense to the findings of this study. The fifth chapter briefly summarizes the most important findings and provides a conclusion.

This text aims to explore the essence of “Exist.ID” through existing literature on existentialism, egoism, psychoanalysis, sub-consciousness, semiotics and creative genealogy. Mental images of the soul are expressed in ink through the creative process and its examinations. Meanwhile, formalities and methods of expression are examined through creative self-realisation, and interpreted by means of symbolism and metaphor, constructing a personal creative logic and vocabulary with profound spiritual significance. The creative research of this project is divided into five categories, starting out with the “Masked Life” series, which is a string of descriptive investigations of the interactions between individuals, and between individuals and society as a whole. This is followed by “Window to the Mind”, which portrays the original self, the disoriented nature of contemporary existence, the insecurity, mistrust and paradoxical state of mind it breeds, as an investigation of the process of self-identification. The third series is called “Bound Hearts”. It looks at the isolation created by society, the actual and virtual boundaries, and the emotionless, secluded and self-contained auto-dialogue that is projected. The next series “Nihilistic World” explores a multitude of possible forms of existence; it creates a new space by using points, lines and surfaces- the tools of traditional painting. Finally, “The Beginning and End of Life” represents the experiences of the human will, its demands, reflections, and how clashes between the inner and outer worlds push the self to desire release and long for a balanced, harmonic state. Personal creativity is thus replaced with an exploration of life as an ending to the series.

Paulin-Campbell, Annemarie Renée. "The impact of the imaginal and dialogical (relational) processes in the spiritual exercises, on image of self and image of God in women making the nineteenth annotation retreat." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/204.

Abstract:
The thesis is situated in the interface between psychology and Christian spirituality. It explores the experience of women in the South African context making the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius as a Nineteenth Annotation Retreat. The results of the study show that shifts in image of self and image of God are facilitated by the imaginal and dialogical/relational processes in the Spiritual Exercises. A qualitative, hermeneutical approach was taken in which nineteen women were interviewed about their experience of making the Spiritual Exercises. Fifteen of these were interviewed after completing the Spiritual Exercises while four were interviewed during the process. Shifts towards more positive self and God-representations were reported by all but one of the women interviewed. Images of God shifted from distant or ambivalent to positive relational images. Images of self also shifted in concert with shifts in image of self, with the women coming to see themselves as intrinsically valuable and unconditionally loved by God. A marked lessening in defensive processes was also noted. A constructive interpretation of the themes which emerged from an analysis of the data was done from both psychological perspective and spiritual-theological perspectives. From a psychological perspective Object-Relations theory and Dialogical Self theory were used to better understand the mechanisms enabling shifts in God and self-representation. From a spiritual theological perspective, Rahner’s (1960, 1964) relational theology of grace shed light on the spiritual processes in the Spiritual Exercises which facilitate shifts in image of God and self. Imaginal dialogical or relational aspects of the Exercises were found to play an important role in facilitating shifts in both image of self and image of God. The findings of this study provide compelling evidence for the interplay between psychological and spiritual processes in the Spiritual Exercises in particular, and spiritual experience in general, resonating with the work of Meissner (1987, 2003) and Ulanov (2001). It also resonates with Rahner’s (1960, 1964) theology of grace as God’s self-communication which parallels the move in psychology towards the relational which is strongly evident in both object-relations theory and the more recent Dialogical Self psychology.

Art creation involves an artist’s individual emotion and living experience. When art creation combines with esthetics, art creation will be equipped with two characteristics, representing the meaning of life and fascination. The researcher has stayed in different cities for a long period of time. The researcher has both the deep experiencing and transformation of the mood as the initiation of creation. The researcher skillfully applies some picture-based symbols to present the “city image”. This study aims at exploring how to signify modern people’s pursuit of mental freedom through birds’ eyes, known as “The Eyesight of Birds.” Furthermore, the researcher clarified the thread of thought of her own personal creation through the analyses of art theory. The researcher embodied the symbols and metaphors of modern people’s mental world through the parable art. In this study of creation, the researcher applied methodologies of theoretical analysis, theoretical comprehensive analysis and action research. The first chapter of this study is regarding the motives and purposes of the researcher while conducting this study as well as the methodologies and research range. The researcher explored related studies and researches, including the performance of parables on traditional paintings and modern paintings in the second chapter; furthermore, the researcher studied the characteristics of modern cities, the concept of flaneur and the psychological foundation of creation study. In Chapter Three, the researcher illustrated the ideas of creation in terms of the ideas of creation and contents of the “City Image.” Chapter Four is the analyses of the researcher’s artworks. The researcher combined the images of birds and cities to demonstrate the contents of “City Image;” in addition, the researcher merged both psychological theories and paintings of parables to analyze her recognition of life with her personal viewpoint. The researcher also expects her artworks can escape from the frame of life; on the other hand, the researcher has been attempting to discover the hidden and neglected parts in life with the viewpoints of an observer. Chapter Five is the conclusion of this thesis paper; the researcher proposed the retrospection of this study and expectation in the near future. Through the creation of “Freedom of the Spiritual Soar - The City Image with The Eyesight of Birds,” the researcher was capable of forming her artworks by means of continuous exploration, observation and construction of ideas. Those artworks also reflect the real thoughts of the researcher’s comprehension of living. Moreover, the researcher was allowed to be fertilized mentally through the creation of her artworks. The insecurity that existed in the researcher’s mind had been gradually transformed into positive energy. The researcher was allowed to completely represent her spiritual connotation through her artworks and demonstrate her personal unique style of paintings.

Abstract Spiritual Freedom in Chinese painting ----- a Study for Pi-Yin Chang’s painting, The Image and Metaphor of Egret Due to the influence of modern technology, the degree of materialism is way beyond tender loving care. Many people have already forgot how to interact and communicate with each other; how to share the joy of life, let alone placing the value to mother nature. The natural resource nowadays has been overly developed and used. It not only directly and apparently jeopardizes our living right but also breaks the balance of ecosystem. The destruction of natural landscape also greatly affects our next generation’s existence and development. The series of “ egrets” are used as the subject matter here to show concern to the natural living creatures. By expressing the hankering to nature beauty with the illustration of Chinese painting but not by the scientific standpoint. Only by means of the combination of the Chinese originated culture and the natural artistry, in order to wake up that people can re-value natural resource and realize the importance of humanity. The core of the personal creation is based on the essence of Chinese artistic spirit─“ aeriality v.s. reality’’ and “ tangibility v.s. intangibility”, on the notion of time and space, and realizing by means of introspection and works of art. The content of Spiritual Freedom in Chinese Painting covers: 1. Exterior Nature: Means nature appearances, including the nature itself, the probe of life and back to the nature. 2. Time and Space of Life: Includes the cycle of ecosystem, Eastern-Western universe mold, and the time and space concept regarding its circulation and combination. 3. Regional development and historical culture are considered closely related that the historical spirit of culture would form the elements of regional images over time. Tainan is named an “ancient cultural capital” whose diverse architecture and cultural spirit are created by the development of various ethnic groups. Public transportation is primary for the public that bus stops provide the public with shelters from the sun and rain as well as detailed information of the rides. Bus stops locate on several places in the region that they are regarded as a part of the region for introducing the specific cultural spirit of the region and developing the public facilities with regional culture. By extracting the cultural spirit of historical sites, this study tends to combine phased questionnaire surveys to transform cultural spirit into symbols through semiotic theories and figurative design and to further introduce them to bus stops so as to present the regional culture. The public at bus stops therefore could naturally experience the regional culture and know the cultural spirit. From the research outcomes, cultural spiritual image could be interpreted by symbols or images and transformed into actual objects. With the research outcomes, it is expected to become an icon of design for the beautification plans of other counties and cities. The profound history covered in cultural spirit could be easily understood through public facilities so that the public could further learn the spirit and meaning of such culture. Zengele, Patricia Bongi. "The images of God as perceived by abandoned children : an exploratory study into the spiritual development of children." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/1409.

Full text
Abstract:
This research study explores the ways in which children from diverse family backgrounds can construct or reconstruct their God representations. These were probed by using 'object relations theory' and 'matemal deprivation theory' as means of further gaining insight into children's initial formulations of interpersonal and emotional relationships and how these were translated into the way they imagined God to be for themselves, given their age-group. Parallels were drawn between the interface of psychology and theology by using theories on faith development. There is a clear acknowledgment that there are certain steps of development that individuals go through in their growth at both psychological and spiritual levels. This confirms that there is a need for these two disciplines to draw from each other as means of creating conducive climate to allow for an integrated approach towards formulations of spiritual development among children. Through the use of questionnaires the children were given the opportunity to explore images of God and to also express these in the form of a drawing. The content analysis of this study demonstrated that there were no distinct differences on how children perceived God between abandoned children being raised in an institutional setting and those children being raised by biological parents. This finding highlighted the fact that there are other factors that impact children's spiritual development. These include care, nurture and emotional security. This study contributes to future research on developing new theologies by children, thus enabling them to play a central role in formulating contextual and relevant curriculums on religious education.

This essay made attempt to use literary text as teaching material of culture to guide students in multi-cultural contrast of cross-language and –culture by adopting vocabularies and textural images containing cultural implication, through the approach of translation teaching, so as to allow students rebuild schema and enhance prior knowledge of culture required in reading and writing of Mandarin in the process of contrasting during class discussion, by integrating students’ living experience and cognition. This study was divided into two stages. Scope of the first stage lay in The story of the Stone, a story describing traditional Chinese culture from multiple aspects, where “Zen Shiyin in a Dream Sees the Jade of Spiritual Understanding” and “All Good Things Must End” in Chapter One were cited as samples of contrast corpus between Mandarin and English. The result showed that cultural differences between China and the West, as well as personal factors of each individual translator, caused variation in selecting Mandarin and English words and cultural vacancy in translation. The second stage aimed to design experimental teaching materials and methods in order to apply the cultural vacancy caused by cultural differences to cultural teaching and to complement cognition of the vacancy through class discussion about multi-culture, and also guide the students to reorganize the schema and promote their background knowledge for reading and writing. In sourcing experimental teaching materials and methods, mythology which is interesting for most people was selected——the myth“Nu-wa smelted stones to mend the sky” in the first half of Chapter One “Zen Shiyin in a Dream Sees the Jade of Spiritual Understanding” and “All Good Things Must End”, the philosophical thinking distributing throughout the whole novel, were cited as texts of source language, while concept of whole-language educational philosophy was adopted as teaching philosophy and 5C3M (5C: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, communities; 3M: interpersonal mode, presentation mode, interpretive mode) were employed as principles of teaching method design. As these teaching materials and methods have never been exercised practically, questionnaire method was implemented to collect teachers’ and students’ opinions as basis for improving the teaching materials and methods. Finding of statistical results of the questionnaire analyzed by SPSS18.0 showed that students were interested in accepting cultural texts as cultural material, which deserved further thinking by teachers: How to use literary texts as material for designing teaching contents and modes suitable for themselves; if a teaching method of translation teaching is to be used, it would be more suitable that subjects of teaching be limited to a class with students using the same native language. As up to three forth of students agreed with homework in form of translation combining students’ living experience, translating Mandarin into students’ native language, teachers could try this way to boost interest and motivation of students in learning Mandarin. Finally, as the teaching materials and methods designed by this study are experimental ones without having been implemented, teachers may improve them based on results of the questionnaire and then lecture Mandarin literature curriculum with literature works in real teaching field to accomplish a practical research.

Full text
Abstract:
God is at the centre of an, often inarticulate, innate human desire and pursuit to enjoy and reflect the divine image in which every human being was created. The purpose of this research project is to affirm that human elemental pursuit as God‘s intent to fulfill this created, intrinsic human desire in the now or, what is referred to in this doctoral thesis as, proleptic spiritual transformation (PrōST). It seems that the world, and the extent, of spiritual transformation range from an etiolated theology to experiential fullness. Considered herein is God‘s heart, in relationship, and its implication toward an image-bearing human spiritually and how the Edenic fall interrupted this intent. From this is considered God‘s active interest in recovery of his fully-expressed image in humanity especially as experienced in PrōST. To corroborate this purpose, the means and methods of God‘s revelation in unveiling his heart, truth, and intents toward creation and humanity in particular toward spiritual recovery and PrōST, is examined. Moreover, the transformative and soteriological implications of proleptic spiritual transformation (PrōST) are investigated and whether a unified theory regarding PrōST emerges. The primary aim of this work investigates whether individuals must wait for the afterlife to have purification and spiritual transformation fully or largely "worked out", This thesis investigate the provisions of God‘s economy to include a present enjoyment of the imago Dei (image of God) in transformation as inclusive of the existential life of Christ as the imago Christi, reflected and represented by humans in relation to God and creation. That is, this study demonstrates that PrōST, an experience of transformation usually reserved for heaven in eternity, is greatly available today. The central theoretical argument of this study, as set out, is that humans were created in the image of God; however, the enjoyment and expression of this imago Dei, not its essence, has been greatly blemished, marred, and damaged by a God-defying wilfulness of humanity. Despite this rebellion, God desired a full restoration of the enjoyment and expression of his image. God has not forgotten or abandoned this intent. Moreover, the imago Dei now carries something more—the God-man (imago Christi). God‘s image in Jesus now carries the existential realities of his incarnate life toward which PrōST drives. This study re-examines the conventional partitioning of the "now" and "not yet" for a new balance and paradigm in expressed PrōST toward imago Dei.

This paper mainly discussed how the events happening in the surroundings influenced on the society, and expressed how the researcher thought about it. The author connected her female spiritual expression with the course of the events, from the start to the end, and her conscious or subconscious feelings aroused from the growing experiences of herself, with the materials of “Picture” and “Symbol”. The author internalized her growing experiences and associated them with her inner spiritual thoughts, by the methods of static, lines, colors, dynamic as her materials of creation. Self-perception and spirit of a woman of new age were totally exhibited with her artistic creation, by which the author wished to start a new artistic expression. New Feminism, Psychology and Iconology are the theoretical bases of this paper. The Literature methodology, Quality of thinking, Image science methodology and Art methodology are the methods of this paper. For painting media, the author tried multiple attempts, such as "painting", "acrylic paint" and together with other "mixed media" for novel attempts. By the use of autobiographical paintings, it conveyed the dialogue of self and subconscious. The mixture use of cool and warm colors or the presentation with texture stressed the expression of inner images. In this paper, the author explored the "inner mind" through the approach of "metaphor", by which personal inner spiritual awareness and personal subtle life experience were explored. The author reflected on, improved, discussed and analyzed mutual trust between people as well as social care, with the wishes for the reformation of aged thoughts and the enhanced shape of self-feature and inner awareness.

Fresen, Patricia Anne. "Self-knowledge in the writings of Catherine of Siena." Thesis, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/16811.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of self-knowledge in the writings of Catherine of Siena. The introductory chapter clarifies the kind of self-knowledge she is describing, viz. metaphysical self-knowledge which, in the case of mystics such as Catherine, blossoms into mystical self-knowledge. Catherine is then situated within the framework of her own era. A survey of catherinian literature follows. Since her major symbol for self-knowledge is the cell, the concept of the cell in the Church tradition of the West, and its influence on Catherine, is explored. The major aspect of the enquiry is the tracing of the chronological unfolding of Catherine's doctrine of self-knowledge, working with the texts themselves. This is done under the headings of her three main symbols for self-knowledge, la eel/a (the cell), la casa (the house) and la citta dell'anima (the city of the soul). Each of these sections is concluded with an interpretation of the significance of the unfolding of that symbol within Catherine's thought and the chapter itself is rounded off by an interpretation of the three symbols for self-knowledge in their integration and interconnectedness. Catherine communicates her experience of mystical self-knowledge by means of a complex system of images and symbols, all of which fit together to form a whole. This warrants an investigation into the role of the imagination, imagery and symbol in mysticism, and explores Catherine's use of imagery and symbol. The study shows Catherine's own gradual integration of mystical experience and ministry as it takes place within her experience and in the development of her thought. What we are able to see, by studying the texts, is the formation and strengthening of the underlying unity in Catherine between the inner movement of mystical love and outgoing concern for others which is redemptive love. These two are really one.

This paper primarily focuses on paintings created by the author between 2010 and 2012, investigating Juan Net’s influence on the various manifestations of the environment’s and people’s expressions of imagination and meaning. The paper also explores the spirit behind the author’s methods and modes of painting and delves into the reconstruction and stacking under different states of consciousness that arise from visual reflection. When psychological and visual experiences are embodied in one’s creations, the creative spirit is released, and meaning and personality are revealed. During the process of creation, what the author hopes is revealed is the visual experience that cannot be entirely experienced through physical faculties and is instead brought to completion by psychological ones during our journeys in space and time. Personal experiences are combined with the principles of “Juan” and subjectively infused into the content of the work. Through the style of a narrative documentary, various journeys are revealed in an attempt to shed light on the content of the experience. The works focus on emotions of entanglement or confusion that are unrelated to pain or joy. From the standpoint of an observer, simultaneous feelings of distrust and self-righteous emotions might arise, allowing us to probe into “the reality in unreality.” When faced with this predicament, the author asks the question of whether its possible to experience the work’s innermost authenticity, and uses this opportunity to attempt to explore the author’s own flow of experience registration through image recording. The main principles behind the creations are the use of both concrete and formless images in daily life and twisting and crisscrossing lines, filling the resulting blocks with color. The unique characteristics of both are highlighted, creating an interwoven and penetrating image. Generally speaking, these works cannot be regarded as reproductions of natural objects, but instead, they contain narratives, illustrating how the inner world influences people and our surroundings. The entire creative process, then, becomes a documentation of a journey. Some of what occurs can be controlled, while the rest arises unexpectedly, rendering images that appear all the more profoundly uncertain and unique. The methods implemented in creating these pieces can be defined by three philosophies: I. a vanishing image (of the past), II. a visible image (of the present), and the experimental, III. an imagined image (of the present or future). Parts of the creations were also implemented while blindfolded. To further extend the concepts discussed above, the psychological stimuli resulting from physical experience is used to reveal the intangibility of our “Juan-like” world. The author also attempted to take on the perspective of the observer looking at the completed creations, and mindfully reflected upon the important role of experience and impressions with regards to a painting.

Collett, Joan Elizabeth. "Of human bondage : investigating the relationship anorexia nervosa/ bulimia, spirituality and the body-self alliance." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/5089.

Full text
Abstract:
A growing body of research recognizes spirituality as a key element in well-being, but the agency of individual spirituality remains unclear. This study explores the role of embodied knowledge in reality construction and its effect on illness by considering how spirituality as embodied existence shapes reality. Spirituality, as a form of embodied knowing, is shown to reach deeply into the fundamental relatedness of existence. The study argues for a mindbody- spirit unity, making no distinction between self and spirit, emotions and subjective experiences situated in the spirit. As the medium between body and self, spirituality gives form to the felt reality of embodied knowledge and meaning, shaping language, cognition, thought and action towards lived reality. New ways of thinking about eating disorders were stimulated by innovative discoveries through investigating the lived reality of the illness within an epistemology that included subjective experiences as part of reality. While acknowledging the influence of social discourse, the study calls for a recognition of vulnerability in the human condition giving rise to the embodiment of a wounded self or disenabling spirituality, manifested in the development of an eating disorder. It uncovers the anti-spiritual properties involved in the lived reality of people struggling with anorexia/bulimia, evident in social withdrawal and/or self-injury. Behavioural patterns of obsession and repetition underscore similarities to addiction and ritual. The study synthesised pastoral therapy and research. A postmodern approach to illness and a qualitative design with interpretive phenomenology were used. Three young women struggling with anorexia/bulimia participated in semi-structured research interviews. Their narrative accounts provided a chronology of developing, living with and healing from anorexia /bulimia. Emphasis shifted from an approach aimed at fixing the body to focusing on individual experiences of the illness; what she brought to the encounter in her own resources and potential to heal. Healing is envisaged as the ongoing development of a renewed sense of self, an inherently spiritual process orchestrated from within. Previous disassociation of body and self is replaced with reconnection between body, self and other, care of the spirit became care of the body, expressed in harmony and wholeness of being.

Abstract:
During the premodern era, images corresponded to the doctrines of ”The Word”, but in contemporary society this relationship is open and does not correspond to the divine Word. Because of our perceived, postmodern inability to respond to ancient Christian symbols, there is a need to revision these symbols and Christian spirituality. The result of such a revisioning would include an ”opening up” of ”The Word” and of traditional, worn symbols which have lost vitality in this milieu. Art produced with this in mind needs to make ”The Word” more currently accessible and relevant. Further, this revisioning would add significance and enhance the possibility of resurrecting language dealing with ”The Word”. In the process of revitalising old Christian imagery and language, I aim to show that the primary role of contemporary Christian art is to function metaphorically. Finally, I argue that Christian images can take on significance as contemporary images.

Badenberg, Robert 1961. "Sickness and healing : a case study on the dialectic of culture and personality." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18027.

Full text
Abstract:
Sickness and healing expenence is universal, but the context in which both are perceived and dealt with is particular. Culture and the individual constitute the universal context. The social structures, values, beliefs, the symbol system of a culture and the tendency of the individual to act upon his existence within cultural parameters, inform the particular context. The relationship that exists between culture and the individual is best described as dialectic. The concept of dialect is the theoretical tool to analytically show how this relationship works out in real life. At the base of this relationship operates conflict. Sickness, or permanent ill health since early childhood as shown in an in-depth case study, triggers conflict on at least two levels: the personal-psychological and the socio cultural level. To effectively deal with sickness and the inner conflicts caused by it, is to channel the motivation to resolve them by way of employing a symbolic idiom, a cultural symbol that attains personal meaning. G. Chewe P. of Bemba ethnicity, the main actor of this thesis, demonstrates how his life experience of sickness made various symbols become operational, how he filled them with personal meaning, and that there was no hiatus between the public and private domain. Healing requires more than medical aid. Cultural symbols that become personal symbols are often tied into religious experience of some kind. Individuals who successfully employ personal symbols eventually achieve healing because the symbolic idiom helps them to resolve intrapsychic conflict. Missiology cannot escape from two realities: culture and the individual. If anything, missiology must be interested in culture and the individual. Missiology, in the role of aide-de-camps of the Christian Mission, shows the history of how individuals connect to God, and how God transforms them in their cultural environment. To be able to achieve both goals, the issues of context and conflict must be addressed. This thesis seeks to account for the dialectic between culture and the individual, how context and conflict shaped the person and the Christian G. Chewe P. of Bemba ethnicity, and how he acted upon this context to resolve his travail.

Abstract:
Summary and key words in German and English
Every church faces the challenge of procuring capable workers for the multifaceted task of ministry. For several decades now official denominational statements and the discipline of Practical Theology have been calling for a new understanding of giftedness in ecclesial service. As yet little fundamental research has been done in this area. This dissertation seeks to make a contribution both empirically and theologically. It marks the first time in the German–speaking world of Practical Theology that the issue of how one discovers charisms is addressed academically. The specific field of research is located in the Protestant Regional Church of Baden in southwest Germany. Nevertheless the findings can be applied more broadly since the research is based on thorough exegetical and systematic–theological analysis and has been verified empirically. There has been a quest for the charisms of the Spirit since the beginning of the twentieth century and even more so now in the face of the societal challenges of postmodernity. In the discussion of the different theological positionens arise as result that charisms have to be seen with an triune approach. In addtion, besindes the fact that charisms have a habitual meaning, they first of all have a relational dimension. The empirical research involved online–interviewings of pastors, plus interviews of church members. One of the major findings was that the views of pastors on how church members receive gifts is determined by their theological understanding of the charisms. Pastors discover gifts, not according to Pauline criteria, but largely according to emotional aspects, as proved by this research. It became apparent that protestant pastors are of the opinion that New Testament charisms are not first received at baptism, but already at birth. Another interesting finding is that members of both protestant main stream churches and pentacostal-charismatic churches hold the same believes about how to receive charisms. The only difference is their repertoire of gifts. This dissertation focuses on developing guidelines for the discovery of charisms within the congregation as the local body of the Church.

Abstract:
The Bible is widely read but it is difficult to understand the world and culture of the era that it is set in. It is my aim to provide new insight into a few Old Testament verses with their symbolic meaning. When ivory was discovered at Nimrud the discovery elicited huge excitement. The ivory pieces came to tell a story. Through studying the art of the different cultures a picture begins to appear of the palaces and homes of the wealthy in the Levant. The iconography could be “read.” Iconography is the science of interpreting the message the art wants to convey to the viewer. A few images are repeatedly showing up in the Levant during the Iron Age. In this study I am focusing mainly on The Tree of Life, the Winged Disc, the Rosette and Winged Spiritual Beings. I am attempting to discern the meaning behind these images.
