The meaning of Kekuni expresses the mana of a special healing light from the fire of the lama wood, which carries the power to reverse negativity. For those of us who knew Kekuni Blaisdell and remain close in spirit, and for those who are forever affected by his light, we have all felt the impact of his aloha, his spirit, his soul, and that eternal light in our lives. In honor of Kekuni and all that he stood for, worked for, and manifested, we honor him most by carrying that light forward in our collective lives, work, and continuing kuleana of aloha ‘āina, ‘āina aloha...

Abstract:
King’s Hawaiian has been family owned for more than six decades, and the ‘aloha spirit’ runs deep. But, rapid growth in recent years has exposed serious challenges. From production inefficiencies to supply chain disruptions, management recognizes the need to rapidly evolve their family business to a professionally managed one. Their relationship-based supply chain worked for a family firm, but will this approach continue to work as they expand rapidly? A disruption in their egg supply exposed the firm to risks they never anticipated. Now, they are rethinking their entire supply chain, including their most important raw material: flour. How can they strategically manage their raw material needs while sustaining double-digit growth? How do they identify and mitigate risks in their chain? King’s Hawaiian knows its success is in its supply chain, including their unique delivery model. Getting this right is critical to their mission: to deliver their aloha spirit to every household, every day.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article studies the Hawai‘i tourism industry's efforts to market Hawai‘i as a multi-cultural paradise where positive racial experiences could be bought and sold. With jet travel arriving in Hawai‘i the same year as statehood, the tourism industry, aided by the new state government, exploited Hawai‘i's newfound prominence, luring planeloads of American tourists who thronged its beaches, hotels, and cultural spectacles. Tourism helped turn racial tolerance into a saleable, if intangible, commodity. Marketers invited mainlanders to partake in the islands’ celebrated ‘Aloha Spirit’: an elusive vision of social harmony said to be the defining feature of the Hawai‘i vacation. By attending ethnic festivals, eating exotic food, and interacting with locals, visitors might even bring some Aloha Spirit home with them. Hawai‘i's society thus became not only a site of consumption, but an object of consumption itself. What such utopian ideas obscured was that the broader construction of Hawai‘i as a multi-cultural paradise was part of state efforts both to transform Hawai‘i's economy and to promote US influence in the Pacific. While the limited historiography on multi-culturalism situates its emergence in grassroots protest, this article argues for the elite origins of the multi-cultural ideal, which served the interests of both business and US foreign policy.

Abstract:
Abstract. Surfing is a practice that is becoming increasingly important in our society. This practice has socioeconomic implications in many communities that are increasingly important since the increase in practitioners has also led to an increase in companies that try to provide them with services. An example of its growing social relevance is that more and more general media are covering news related to surfing the waves, especially, surely due to its radical aesthetics, the milestones reached by surfers riding giant waves. The growth of surfers is linked to the phenomenological representation that they have of many of the aspirational values of contemporary society such as freedom, life in nature or hedonism. Values associated with the Aloha spirit, to which the origins of surfing are linked. However, the findings made after a bibliographical review of several of the main bibliographical texts on the history and culture of surfing, lead us to the conclusion that the existence of an interest in offering a romantic vision of the origins of surfing seems evident. The birth of surfing, although many historians try to deny it, is a total unknown, however, linking it with Polynesian roots has served to shape the socially constructed paradisiacal image that marketing has managed to perpetuate.

Abstract:
This article addresses three issues of what I suggest here should be regarded as the shifting technological and matter-based apparatus of animation: first, the meanings and affect of objects and materials actually used in animated films; second, the visual dramaturgy made possible by objects and materials for animation screenwriters; and, third, the status of animation process materials as archival objects. The analysis looks at a number of animated films and specifically at their design form, material association, and narrative function to define what I will call the “scripted artefact”, and an “Animated Object Cycle”. This overview will also operate in a spirit of thinking about theories of practice and practices of theory in animation, and refer to both established theoretical perspectives as well as primary practice idioms.

Abstract:
When I conceptualised the Sisters of the Screen project as a book and film, I envisioned an “imagined community” of kindred spirits, a “sisterhood” where the screen was their ultimate point of convergence. The screen is where their images are read; whether it’s a movie screen, television set, video monitor, computer screen, tablet or mobile phone, for a director, producer, film festival organiser, actor, critic or spectator the screen is the ultimate site where the moving image is viewed, interpreted and understood. With the phenomenal development of screen culture as a result of the digital turn, I return to the “screen” as a conceptual framework that integrates screen media, and their associated devices and technologies; hence, the concept “African women of the screen” as the organising principle. This report examines the impact of the digital turn on African women of the screen, how their cinematic gaze has evolved, developed and transformed with the evolution of new technologies such as the Internet and, in particular, the emergence of social media.

The SPIRAL2 project will enable the production at GANIL of very intense radioactive and stable beams. Pushing the present-day limits of knowledge, it represents an opportunity for several fields of nuclear physics. The Super Separator Spectrometer S3 associated to its focal-plane detection system SIRIUS will take the best possible benefit of these intense stable beams especially for researches on the N=Z nuclei close to Tin-100 and on the super heavy elements. This thesis is dedicated to the SIRIUS Tunnel silicon detectors, with GEANT4 simulations and their corresponding experimental study of the SIRIUS Tunnel detectors prototypes. In addition to the detection efficiency characterization and the setting of corresponding limits on mechanical conceptual drawings, the simulations have enabled to shed light on the major forward step brought by zero dead-layer silicon detectors. The section dedicated to the manipulations starts with the presentation of the test bench set up at IPHC in order and test the prototypes and pre-series detectors. The Tunnel detector is also presented in its scientific and technical context. The Tunnel detector prototypes studies and the results obtained are detailed. Finally, the evolution toward series detectors is presented on the basis of the improvements done with the pre-series detector

Abstract:
Cosmic reionization was most likely initiated by star forming dwarf galaxies. Little is known about the physical mechanisms allowing ionizing Lyman continuum (LyC) photons to escape from galaxies, but to learn more we can study local galaxies in detail. Until now, there has however only been one claim of a local LyC leaking galaxy, the disputed case of Haro 11. The lack of local detections could in part be a combined effect of technical problems and search strategies. Re-examining the FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) data of Haro 11 led us to develop a new model for the spectral reduction, by which we could confirm an escape fraction of LyC photons (fesc) of 3.3±0.7%. In addition, eight more galaxies from the FUSE archive were examined leading to a new detection, Tol 1247-232, with fesc = 2.4±0.5%. The low value derived from the stacked spectrum of the whole sample, fesc = 1.4±0.4%, could be an indication of an evolving fesc scenario and/or an effect of probing the wrong targets. Local LyC candidates are normally selected among starburst galaxies with high equivalent widths in Hα. This can however give preference to ionization bounded H II regions with low escape fractions. In an attempt to overcome this selection bias, we developed a novel method to select LyC leaking galaxies. The selection is based on a blue continuum and weak emission lines, properties that in combination can be explained only by models with very high fesc. Using these criteria, we selected a sample of leaking candidates at z≈0.03 to be observed in Hα and Johnson B filters. The sample galaxies have properties that strongly favour leakage. Among these are clear signs of mergers and interaction with neighbouring galaxies, off-centre major star forming regions and spectral properties indicating previous starburst activity. The Lyman-alpha (Lyα) line is often used as a tracer for the distant galaxies believed to have reionized the universe. Here, for the first time local face-on spiral galaxies are studied in Lyα imaging. All three galaxies are emitting Lyα photons in the polar direction far out in the spiral arms, in clear contrast to previously studied irregular galaxies where strong emission is seen from the nuclei. If the small sample studied here is representative, it will have implications for detecting Lyα galaxies at high redshifts as it would depend strongly on the viewing angle.

Abstract:
To the metabolism of sex steroid hormones is essential the participation of esteroidogenic enzymes. The enzyme cytochrome P450c17 is responsible for androgen production; and the enzyme aromatase cytochrome P450 is responsible for estrogen production, however, both enzymes require forming a complex with an enzyme partner called NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase to perform the metabolism of these hormones, which are essential for sexual differentiation. This study aimed to immunolocalization of the three enzymes above mentioned in the vaginal tissue from female rodents Galea spixii. Therefore, the experiment was carried out using vaginal cytology techniques for definition of the estrous cycle phases, techniques for light microscopy, scanning electron and immunohistochemical tests for the detection of enzymes: cytochrome P450c17, cytochrome P450 aromatase, and NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase. It was found that the estrus cycle of Galea spixii female lasts 15.85 ± 1.4 days, with the formation and rupture of vaginal closure membrane during each oestrous cycle. The vagina has a hypertrophied clitoris with the urethral orifice that opens on top of it, and it is observed the absence of a vaginal vestibule. The vaginal mucosal epithelium undergoes proliferative changes, with thickening and thinning according to the respective estrous cycle phase. The enzymes cytochrome P450 aromatase and NADPH reductase are immunolocated throughout the oestrous cycle in the epithelium and connective tissue of the vagina from Galea spixii. On the other hand, the enzyme cytochrome P450c17 is immune located in the vaginal epithelium during all stages of the estrous cycle, except at estrous. With these data may be suggested that there is a local estrogens and androgens metabolism in vaginal tissue which may be associated with cell proliferation, vascularization and innervation variation besides the formation and rupture of the vaginal closure membrane.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the Latino population of Hawaiʻi, one of the oldest yet least explored settler groups to migrate to the islands. I begin by examining what I call the “Tam incident,” in which Local Chinese Hawai‘i councilman Rod Tam referred to Mexican workers in Hawai‘i as “wetbacks.” This incident reveals both the understudied history of Latinos in Hawai‘i as well as current racist stereotypes of Latinos on the islands, which I contend both illustrates the influence of continental U.S. racial thinking, as well as the limits of the “aloha spirit.” Utilizing Leo Chavez’s “Latino Threat” narrative, I demonstrate how Mexicans become racialized in Hawaiʻi and what this signifies within the larger narrative of citizenship and belonging in “the Aloha State.” Their racialization highlights the forms of marginalization, stereotypes, labor oppression, shifting hierarchies and social exclusion faced by Latinos in Hawai‘i. I argue that race, not ethnicity highlights structural and institutional processes that continue to reinforce the idea that Latinos do not exist in the islands, are newcomers, and take people’s jobs, rather than see them as one of the oldest settler communities that has contributed significantly to the economic, social and cultural fabric of Hawaiʻi.

Abstract This section introduces and examines some of Mina Bergson’s ritualistic practices and texts, along with paraphernalia from the Golden Dawn and Alpha et Omega societies: the grimoires, symbols, languages, props, costumes, sets, mathematic equations, colors, choreographies, and stagings that were part of any member’s initiation and ongoing training as they moved from neophyte through the higher grades within the Order. The issue of performance (for instance, of the Rites of Isis) and performativity is also addressed, alongside Mina’s use of multiple names, her model of actively engaged mysticism, as well as her claim that material science was spiritualizing itself and occult science was materializing itself (because matter and spirit are “only opposite poles of the same universal substance”).

Abstract:
In the 1970s, British Protestant churches were changed by a movement that criticized formality and tradition as ‘churchianity’ and claimed access to the supernatural ‘gifts of the spirit’. Large numbers of loosely networked fellowships were formed, and many mainstream congregations adopted the movement’s rock-music worship style. Its embodiment in the Alpha course training programme was widely adopted. But the movement attracted few non-Christians, and it peaked in the 1990s, because the pool from which it recruited—young Christians put off the mainstream by conservative mores and traditional worship—was shrinking. Its emphasis on personal experience rather than shared belief meant that, instead of revitalizing the churches, it served as a bridge from conventional faith to personal idiosyncrasy and indifference.
